National Beer Day is celebrated in bars across DB but do you know the history behind this special day? (And that you have US President Franklin D. Roosevelt to thank for it?) On March 22, 1933, Roosevelt signed the Cullen-Harrison Act, which repealed prohibition for beer. Effective April 7, 1933, people across the US could once more buy, sell and consume beer. On the first National Beer Day, April 7, 1993, 1.5 million barrels of beer and ale were downed across the US. Let’s drink to that!

Easter in DB:

T
he culturally-diverse DB community brings people from many religions and all walks of life together. While not everyone celebrates Easter for its Christian meaning – the resurrection of Christ – the openminded attitude of DBers ensures Easter is an enjoyable time for all. With an Easter egg hunt and special game zones in DB Plaza, Easter is a special time for Discovery Bay’s youngsters. And it doesn’t stop there – themed restaurant promotions and a convivial atmosphere throughout the resort ensure all residents experience a relaxing and enjoyable holiday.

I can’t think of anywhere else in Hong Kong where kids can enjoy such a large-scale, outdoor
Easter activity, and it’s incredible that so many eggs are provided. The fair is also a real winner with my kids and I have to say, their dad really enjoys it too!” To top it all off this year, phase one upgrade works to the playground, at the northern end of Tai Pak Wan, will be completed before the holiday, giving children the chance

The Easter egg hunt on Tai Pak Wan has become a DB tradition and a favourite way to celebrate Easter for many kids. Taking place this year on April 14 and 15, the event has become famous for the sheer number of eggs hidden – this year’s hunt will see children search for 30,000 eggs – and the fact that all participants are sure to find some eggs. When children complete their hunt, they are asked to get involved in a little recycling, by returning the eggs to be reused the following year.

An age-old tradition, egg hunts are now a popular way to celebrate the holiday amongst children across the globe. In DB, kids aged three to 10 can get involved in what is the perfect family day out. There is also a fun fair at Tai Pak Wan and in DB Plaza, April 2017 www.arounddb.com

Holiday time Not everyone sees Easter as a religious holiday and it is used by many as an opportunity to spend time with family and friends and take a break from the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong life. While families tend to head overseas during the summer and over Christmas, Easter is for many a time to stay put and enjoy what DB has to offer. is often referred to as the Lord’s Day,” Pastor James explains. “For many in DB, Easter brings to a close the 40 days of Lent which may also include Maundy Thursday and Good Friday services.” While churches across DB have a host of services and events planned for the Easter holiday, celebrations at the DBICC include an outdoor service on Good Friday at DB Lookout.
Religious celebrations
Of course Easter is celebrated in myriad different ways by different people and according to Pastor James Buckner of Discovery Bay International Church (DBICC), there are no regulations in the Bible about how Easter should be marked.
“A group of families and I will hike up Golf Course Road and once settled at the overlook, we will sing songs and meditate on Gospel passages that remind us of Christ’s suffering on the cross,” Pastor James says. “Seeing the sunrise helps us remember the Son who is risen.”

Argentine transplant Carolina Kollmann holds an acrylic-and-oil mirror up to Hong Kong’s marginalised. Elizabeth Kerr reports

T
he weekend was a pleasant one: a few clouds, a mild sun, and a warm breeze blowing in off the water. Or it was on Buenos Aires native Carolina Kollmann’s back lawn. Carolina is a DB artist gaining some traction for her not at all controversial, controversial paintings of Hong Kong life, and she’s also Argentine to the core. It’s a holiday weekend Friday. No guest is coming into her home without being served fat green olives,
snapping chips and a cool glass of pinot grigio. “My paintings are somewhat controversial in Hong Kong [because] people don’t want to know anything about real life or poverty,” Carolina theorises of her so-called notoriety, David Bowie wafting gently from the studio inside. While that may be the case for some – she was surprised that a local Chinese language daily balked at writing too much about her focus
April 2017 www.arounddb.com
on domestic helpers – it’s the reason a lot of Carolina’s art is getting the attention it is. Portrait of the artist Carolina has an artist’s inquisitive mind and a penchant for (sometimes) brutal honesty, asking as many questions as she answers. She’s effortlessly sophisticated but her words are peppered with hilariously colourful metaphors. Carolina clearly doesn’t suffer
Carolina’s art is influenced by the everyday comings-and-goings in DB
fools, but she’s never arrogant, and she’s quick to put herself in the hot seat. “I got bored of not having much to do quickly,” she says of her early years as a mother (to Max, now 10). “I’m not crazy about exercising, and it’s too late now to make me look 20. It won’t get any better,” she adds with a dismissive chuckle. But it’s easy to see why Carolina, now 48, has no time for nonsense – anyone who came of age during Argentina’s Dirty War years wouldn’t. “I remember when I was very little, my grandmother would tell my dad: ‘She has to study art.’ I was drawing and painting with my markers, watercolours or whatever I could find, but I had no idea what an artist was. I liked the attention and the reaction of my teachers, friends and family to my art pieces. I do remember that. When I decided I wanted to study painting my father initially said no, I think because of the military government disappearing many students from the art school just before that.” With her grandmother’s help, Carolina persuaded her father on art school starting at 14, eventually completing programmes at the National University Institute of Art in Buenos Aires and then London’s Central Saint Martins on a scholarship.
It was in London she met Paul McCartney because Stella was downstairs in design at the same time, and later her husband Matthew. They followed his finance job (art and commerce do mix) to Singapore and finally Hong Kong. All the while Carolina pursued her art, working as a teacher and setting up a mural business. Relocating to Hong Kong in 2009, the couple hoped to find a home with room for a studio so that Carolina could combine her art with raising a family. “We looked around in Central in the beginning but I couldn’t imagine myself in Mid-Levels or anything like that. No sidewalks, cars, the traffic,” she recalls with a roll of the eyes. “You’d wind up just staying there with the little one. When I came to Discovery Bay it was easier to picture it. It was like a country club.” Resort life helps for work too; art is a solitary pursuit. “DB is lovely, Carolina says. “Sometimes when I get to painting, teaching or group work and the day has gone all wrong and I think, ‘My life makes no sense!’ it’s easy to text a friend. ‘I so need a drink!’” she admits with a knowing laugh. Finding inspiration Carolina’s studio is crammed with
easels, canvases, inky cloths, drying brushes, and of course completed work. Chief among them are the centrepiece of a series on the SAR’s domestic helpers and a quasi portrait of DB’s widely discussed – and mysterious – ‘garbage lady’. Having watched her push her trolley from Nim Shue Wan to the plaza and back every day for years, Carolina has painted a vibrant homage that expresses the concern, intrigue and admiration felt by so many residents. “She smiles and you get this impression she’s okay,” Carolina says. Carolina’s focus has varied over time, ranging from dried fish and tropical fruit, to cityscapes and people. Her work is defined by vivid colours and fluid lines, landing somewhere on the spectrum between the robust still life of Cézanne, the observational realism of Hopper’s Nighthawks and the hyper-stylised fluidity of Barnes. Carolina’s art also pops up around town occasionally. She’s worked with Artists Abroad (AA) for the past year, the collective dedicated to community outreach and cultivating new artists, education and artist interaction. This December, she showed her work at AA’s 22nd annual exhibition, Kaleidoscope, at the Rotunda, Exchange Square. Speaking of the show, she is quick to mention fellow DB-

based AA member Eleanor McColl and Pui O’s Martin Lever, who was the guest artist at the recent Rotunda show. As satisfying as AA is – it has donated murals to the Duchess of Kent Children's Hospital, the SPCA and the Chi Heng Foundation – Carolina has started toying with the idea of going bigger for herself. “I don’t want to be unfair, but I want to focus on my own exhibition next,” she says. “Let's see what happens.” Artists often talk about influences, but Carolina prefers to talk inspirations, which right now are the everyday comings-and-goings around her in DB. While admitting
to a lack of blinding ambition (which she supposes is a bad thing for an artist), Carolina is thankful for her healthy sense of expediency. “Life has given me many good opportunities along the way and I took them, and I’m inspired by what I see and experience,” she says of DB in particular. DB’s much-admired garbage lady and the subculture of domestic helpers are two such inspirations. Domestic helpers creep up in most plaza conversations, and their Sunday rituals “fascinate” Carolina.
FIND IT
The enigmatic garbage lady’s determination is what she hoped to capture on canvas. Carolina’s next subject is likely to be a boy looking out of a bus window, after that it’s anyone’s guess. One thing is sure, it will be as honest as Carolina herself. “I’ve always done what needed to be done, and worked when I had to. But I’ve never compromised my art. This is my stuff,” she finishes, looking the most serious she has all afternoon. “You can never compromise your own truth.”

ong Kongers can expect a full week of entertainment in the lead-up to the Hong Kong Sevens, as the event continues to grow and evolve. Of course there is also the rugby, with the sport of sevens becoming ever more popular on the back of its successful debut at last year’s Rio Olympics. Hong Kong is credited for playing a big role in sevens becoming an Olympic sport and for good reason, with by far the biggest tournament on the HSBC World Rugby
Sevens Series showing no signs of slowing down.
HK Sevens Central set to light up Chater Garden for the entire week.
Again Hong Kong will roll out both men’s and women’s teams during the weekend of April 7 to 9, while local favourites Fiji will be sure to put on a show.
Kicking off on April 3, there will be coaching sessions for the kids run by a host of famous ex-players. On top of this, the teams competing in the sevens will visit Chater Garden during the week, giving fans the chance to meet and interact with their heroes. There is plenty on offer for the big kids too, with HK Sevens Central transforming into an entertainment hub as the sun goes down. There will be a range of bands and dance performances, as well as a melting pot of food and beverage options.
Get amongst it The Hong Kong Sevens has long been known for its ability to attract people from far and wide, many more interested in the party than the actual rugby. This year more than ever, the event caters to all, with

Dressing-up is part of the fun
Come the weekend, Sevens in the City kicks off in Chater Garden for those without a ticket to the stadium, with a big screen showing the live action from whistle to whistle. If that isn’t enough, music fans are in for a treat at the kick-off concert on April 6, with renowned UK bands Madness and From the Jam the headline acts. DB kids in on the act As they have done for years, kids from the Discovery Bay Pirates will get the chance to run out on the hallowed turf of Hong Kong Stadium at various stages of the weekend. There will be a number of DB and Lantau kids playing in the youth teams, as well as in the national agegrade showcase games. One long-time DB resident who knows all about the thrill of playing at the stadium on Hong Kong Sevens weekend is 18-year-old Mark Coebergh. Now playing for Bloomberg HK Scottish in the senior Hong Kong Premiership, Mark played for the Pirates for six years and says he learnt plenty from the opportunity to play at the international event.
“It’s pretty cool to run out on the same pitch as all the best professionals,” Mark says. “It was good, a little bit of a taste of the skill needed to play in that huge stadium. It was extremely tiring; it’s a lot bigger than playing on a normal pitch in Hong Kong.” Born and raised in Hong Kong, Mark moved to DB at the age of 10
Spectators in the South Stand
and while he is currently boarding at his university in Kowloon Tong, his family are all still in DB. He studied at YMCA of Hong Kong Christian College in Tung Chung and, as part of Hong Kong’s under-20 elite rugby programme, he has high hopes for his future in rugby. “I’d love to play in the Hong Kong Sevens and if in the future I could qualify for the Olympics that would be pretty amazing,” he says. “I want to play rugby for as long as I can, until I’m an old man.”
Young Hong Kong Sevens veteran 18-year-old DBer Mark Coebergh
A member of the Hong Kong team that won the Asia Rugby U-19 Championship in December, Mark is also engaged with Hong Kong’s senior men’s team and feels he is edging closer to cracking a senior debut in the 15-a-side format. “I’m working hard to get there and I’m hoping it’s not too far off,” he says.

IN FOCUS
The big stage At the end of the day, there is still nothing like being at Hong Kong Stadium on Sunday evening when the rugby reaches the business end and the big boys start to get serious. Rio Olympics gold medallist Fiji loves nothing more than a trip to Hong Kong, with the Pacific Islanders taking out four of the last five tournaments at the spiritual home of sevens. However, so far this year they haven’t been quite at their brilliant best, with South Africa the team to watch. England has been the surprise packet over the opening six rounds of the series, riding high on the silver-medal success of Great Britain in Rio. At the other end of the scale, Australia has been a bit off pace due to a number of injuries to key players, while Scotland and Japan will be looking for improved showings in Hong Kong. Hong Kong will again be looking to earn a spot on the World Series in the qualifying tournament after falling short at the final hurdle last year, going down to Japan in the decider. They’ll come up against a number of tricky opponents, with Spain, Germany and Sri Lanka all sure to provide headaches for the local side.
Hong Kong winger Aggie Poon Pak-yan
Players to watch There is no doubting Fiji are the masters of the condensed format, with players like captain Osea Kolinisau and the dynamic Jerry Tuwai capable of jaw-dropping things on a rugby field. South Africa’s Roscko Speckman and Cecil Afrika are worth the price of admission alone, as are former sprinters Perry Baker and Carlin Isles in the US team. On top of that, you can bet Australian young gun Henry Hutchison, England try-machine Dan Norton, Kiwi Dylan Collier and Kenyan Collins Injera will have the crowd on their feet at some point over the weekend. Hong Kong’s men are constantly on the improve and have a number of line-breakers in their squad, with veteran Salom Yiu Kam-shing still at the top of his game and Ryan Meacheam and captain Max Woodward also sure to excite. In the Hong Kong women’s team, speedster Chong Ka-yan and winger Aggie Poon Pak-yan are constant scoring threats, who are always looking to keep the opposition on its toes.
The women’s competition will again feature a number of quality teams, with the likes of Japan and South Africa heading our way. The Hong Kong ladies team lost in the semi-finals at home last year, but will be hoping to go one better and feature in the final in the main stadium on April 7.

LITTLE GREEN SHOOTS In a world where children are often confined to small flats, familiarity with nature can fall by the way side. Fortunately local schools are making it their mission to give students a hands-on outdoor upbringing. Sam Agars reports

lift; they are having to roll. It’s not flat terrain, so they have to consider where they place their feet.” While the Forest School programme is aimed at reception-aged kids (fourand five-year-olds), the three- and four-year-olds in the DBIS nursery follow a similar programme called Eco Explorers. They all get a chance to explore the purpose-built garden, which is run by Denzel the Dragon and can only be entered by those who have found the dragon’s breath.

or city kids the opportunities to play in creeks, climb trees and generally just get dirty often aren’t there. Some parts of Lantau, even DB to an extent, are the exception, but still many children are more inclined to sit glued to their iPads than get out amongst nature. It is for this reason that schools play a crucial role in getting the youngsters of today in touch with the environment, especially when they first start their learning from the ages of three to five. Discovery Bay International School (DBIS), Discovery College (DC) and Lantau International School (LIS) are three such schools that make a point of getting kids comfortable with nature, with all three running dedicated outdoor programmes. Into the forest DBIS is leading the way in Discovery Bay when it comes to getting really young children outdoors, with the school adopting the Forest School
programme at its Early Years campus last September. Heavily used in the UK, the programme offers children the opportunity to develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a woodland environment. To provide this, DBIS has created its very own garden based around typhoonsalvaged wood and a range of other recycled natural materials. “We want the children’s learning to be evident, rather than the teaching resources,” says Eleanor Loran, the head of Early Years at DBIS. “So rather than having a plastic car which only allows you to play cars, we’ve got sticks, we’ve got logs, we’ve got pebbles, so that children can make all sorts of things. “Our curriculum is based on communication and language, the children are part of a group situation. They speak to one another, they learn how to cooperate, how to be more flexible and adaptable and there is also the physical development side,” Eleanor adds. “They are having to
“It’s all about this story about the dragon who guards the forest and he leaves dragon’s breath,” explains Helen McLean, reception year group leader at DBIS. “To kick it off with a story is great because they really buy into it. They all hang up their little totem sticks and you have to have that to be welcome in the forest. The wool wrapped around the totem stick, that’s dragon’s breath.” Children learn to tie knots, make tents, create mud masks and build bridges as their skills progress, while developing confidence in the outdoors along the way. Helen is soon to receive accreditation as a level-three Forest School leader and will eventually expand the programme to include the use of fire and other tools. “I want the children to learn to risk themselves sensibly and be able to manage tools themselves,” she says. “You never learn those rules until you try. It is building independence because in a world where there are a lot of helpers, everyone gets help to do everything.” Down the track DBIS hopes to take students to the beach, into actual parks and woodlands and eventually up to the DB rock pools near the pagoda. “It is really about exploring, getting involved and getting mucky and messy, which is proven with young children in particular to support their learning,” Eleanor says.

FAMILY MATTERS Lambert, one of the school’s missions is to get children outside as much as possible, with music and art lessons often held outside. Explaining that the Cheung Sha campus is literally surrounded by trees, he says: “The space and the location is beautiful and it just brings another dimension to the whole learning experience. It might not always be linked to the environment, just to get them out as much as we can. “The big debate in the school is how much screen time is too much,” James adds. “We have got the laptops and everything which are very valuable resources, but there is always discussion within the staff about how much is too much.” At the LIS Cheung Sha campus, kids in reception often take class outdoors
A natural connection Over at DC, there is an equal emphasis on outdoor activities for kids at reception level. Four- and five-year-olds are exposed to outdoor learning experiences based around sustainability, such as gardening and composting. “Getting students involved in such learning activities not only nurtures core skills such as collaboration and communication, but can also foster a sense of responsibility to our community and our natural environment,” says Peter Muir, DC’s community engagement coordinator.

Reception kids are taken on hikes and to the beach to foster their appreciation of nature, teaching them about the many different dynamics that make up their surrounds. “With the little ones, it is more about learning about nature and about the seasons and that sort of thing,” James says. “We have lots of weird and wonderful animals around the school and we show the kids and teach the kids how to respect animals. Of course, the kids on South Lantau are very knowledgeable already.”
“It can also take steps to address what some have labelled the nature-deficit disorder, where a lack of connection with our natural environment can lead to its unsustainable use,” Paul adds. Hong Kong’s greenest Being considered the greenest school in Hong Kong is something that LIS

FUTURISTIC FARM
K
evin Chu, founder and director of DBbased COC Design, opens the discussion about his newly renovated home in Caperidge Village by saying: “In my opinion, us architects, designers and builders are some of the worst pollutants of the environment. Whatever projects we undertake, we always have to drain or destroy huge amounts of natural resources. In our industry, this physical act is regrettably unchangeable but we can lessen the damage by being more intelligent about the way we design and more responsible in our choice of ecological materials.”
Photos by Steffan Leyshon-Jones - www.urbandecoy.co
Environmental damage control was the number one priority for Kevin when it came to designing his 2,300-square-foot DB home. The project took over one-anda-half years to complete as he spent time carefully selecting each design component and insisted on working mainly with ECO-certified suppliers. More than that, Kevin focused on introducing recycled furnishings many of which were created on site. He also prioritised the use of ecologically sound man-made materials that expertly replicate the look and feel of unsustainable natural resources. “Most people still live in the Stone Age, striving to attain natural solid materials to make themselves feel like kings and queens within their own ‘palaces,’” Kevin says. “They want chunks of solid wood, lumps of marble or chrome plate, everything to give a certain showoff sheen to their homes. With this project, I hope to show that luxury living is not about degrading natural resources but rather it’s about preserving the beauty of our environment.” Through his interior design experiment, which he calls the Environmentally Conscious hOme (ECO 1) project, Kevin has been

Through his designer eco pad in DB’s Caperidge Village, Kevin Chu experiments with a new way of living that takes the luxe out of luxury and makes green living look good. Samantha Wong reports able to prove that putting the environment first can result in a highstyle, hugely comfortable home. The ultra-minimal 1,150-squarefoot interior looks both inviting and state-of-the-art, and champions art for nature’s sake rather than simply its own. In a home that’s dedicated to ringing in an era of better, greener living, it’s no surprise that Kevin also has the permaculture aspect covered. His 1,150-square-foot rooftop is divided into two parts,
with a swanky lounge area backed by a non-commercial organic farm that helps feed the family – the Chus are vegetarians five days a week. “We hope ECO 1 will lead to a small movement and that people will adopt some of our ideas into making a greener environment,” Kevin concludes. “We all live on this planet on borrowed time and it is our duty to keep our globe sustainable and rotating for generations to come.”

Reap what you sow. Urban farming encourages intelligent food consumption, eliminates concerns about food safety and reduces your carbon footprint. The growth plot, which provides a family of three with 60-70% of its vegetable supply, is supplemented by a space-saving vertical farming area just for herbs. The lighting across the rooftop is solar powered, and the walls are finished in bare concrete to save on building costs.
2
Avoid natural materials. Well-chosen artificial materials are nearly indistinguishable from natural ones, and they can be successfully used to minimise our impact on the world around us. Used extensively within the open-plan living area, they create an upscale look at no cost to the environment. The kitchen’s quartz counter tops look just like natural stone, while being longer lasting and far more eco friendly. A man-made mix of mineral and resin, quartz is one of the hardest materials in the world, making it a perfect choice for busy kitchens.
3
Reuse and repurpose. Recycling materials that are otherwise headed to landfill creates a sustainable architectural cycle where wastage is put to good use. In the living room, the recycled particle-porcelain tiles, on the floor and walls, are made from a mixture of discarded construction materials and traditional dust-pressed tiles. The bookshelf is made with recycled expanded polypropylene (reworked Styrofoam packaging) and the artwork at the entrance is made from surplus MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard).
4
Focus on sustainability. Materials that are sustainably managed and renewable are an environmentalist’s best friend. Cork is one of the most sustainable natural materials to work with as only the bark is harvested. The tree itself continues to flourish, and the new bark re-grows within a few months. The cork tiles in the main bedroom are complemented by an upcycled shelving unit, a second-hand Italian design re-sprayed in matte white paint.
5
Work with nature. Unlike most book- and file-cluttered studies, this space is calm and pristine, dominated by a wall-mounted plantation system. The raindrop planters are filled with easy-to-grow pothos plants, which oxygenate the interior and help filter airborne toxins. Over time the space will be engulfed by plants rather than stationery and other office materials, illustrating the designer’s bid to eliminate paper dependence and reduce tree harvesting.

e’ve all been there. You reach the supermarket checkout, only to discover that you’ve left your reusable bag at home. Do you (a) resign yourself to paying the 50-cent fine and packing up the plastic, or (b) fork out for yet another reusable bag that will inevitably be forgotten next time (along with the others that you’ve panic-bought in this situation).
Before you reach for your wallet, take a moment to check just how much space you really need to pack those groceries. Alongside son Jack, DB resident Gary Stokes recently launched the #trashthecheckout initiative, encouraging shoppers to send a clear message to our retailers by unwrapping and leaving unnecessary plastic packaging at the supermarket. The initiative forces
supermarket chains to confront the issue of unwanted packaging, and is a tangible way for kids to get involved in environmental direct action. And don’t forget to sign Plastic Free HK’s on-going petition to reduce plastic packaging in Hong Kong supermarkets (accessible via bit.ly/2la1Bpi). Plastic Free Seas (PFS), meanwhile, requires little introduction. Founded by DB resident Tracey Read in 2012, this charity works tirelessly to change the way we all view and use plastics, delivering action campaigns, workshops, school talks and events throughout the year. Reduce and reuse Reducing the amount of waste we create starts in the home, and nowhere more so than in the toy box, so a toy swap is a good way to curb waste and expense. The concept is simple – each

child picks out five items that they no longer play with and brings them along to swap. The toys are placed in the centre of the group and everyone takes it in turns to pick out a ‘brand-new’ item to take home. The result? Happy children, happy wallets and a far happier planet. If your kids are growing like weeds, you’ll be familiar with the mountain of barely-worn outfits, often in as-new condition. Aside from being a money pit, children’s wardrobes also contribute to the increasing issue of textile waste in landfill; a pressing concern here in Hong Kong where space is at a premium. Founded by a mum of two, local company Retykle is taking positive action on wardrobe waste, creating an online platform for parents to shop and sell their children’s gentlyused clothes. The result is a stylish boutique stocked with designer clothing at a fraction of the original price. Once your tykes have grown out of their togs, Retykle will collect, photograph and sell the items for you, closing the clothing loop in an eco-savvy way that’s great for time-pushed parents. Repurpose and recycle It’s surprisingly easy to repurpose everyday household items when you see things through the eyes of a child. Plastic bottles can be cut in half to create mini greenhouses; painted egg boxes become storage for small stationery items; and cardboard boxes plus imagination equal robots, houses and even space rockets.
A beach clean-up organised by PFS and DB Green
would otherwise end up in landfill. The group collects, sorts and melts down broken crayons, remoulding them into fun shapes that are then sold in aid of Hong Kong children’s charities. Young volunteers can get involved in this fun and worthwhile rainy-day activity. If you have already pruned your waste back to the bare minimum, it’s time to cast a creative eye over that bulging bin. Consider sorting your trash by type in individual bins, bags or storage boxes that kids can be encouraged to manage. All of DB’s villages have designated recycling facilities, and sorting the household waste into the correct bins is a weekly chore that can be made fun with the addition of a pocket-money incentive. It’s important to note, however, that some things need a little more effort to recycle. Unwanted electrical items, such as old computers, batteries and defunct appliances can be disposed of via the government’s E-Waste programme, which runs a regular scheduled collection and disposal service.
One DB mum who is repurposing for a purpose is Crystal Lee Passarello, whose Crayon Society initiative gives new life to items that
Restore A startling fact: Every piece of plastic ever made is still in existence, the result of which is brought into sharp focus when visiting DB’s beaches, so often blanketed in waste left behind by visitors or washed in from the sea. This final piece of the ecopuzzle gives kids the opportunity to get hands-on resolving the crisis on our own doorstep. Alongside PFS, local non-profit DB Green organises regular beach clean-ups that are suitable for the whole family. (You can join them on April 23 at Nim Shue Wan from 9am to 11am.) Bring your own reusable water bottle and you’ll be supplied with reusable cotton gloves and rubbish sacks. The difference is immediate and profound, and underscores the importance of environmental awareness to kids that participate. So, with a little awareness and creativity, the future is looking increasingly green for the next generation of DB families.

TALE OF TWO CITIES

ituated on the banks of the Yarra River in south-eastern Australia, Melbourne has truly cemented itself as a world-class city, being named ‘most liveable’ in 2016 by the Economist Intelligence Unit for the sixth consecutive year. While the Central Business District (CBD) grid and landmarks such as Federation Square and Flinders Street Station are an Instagram lovers’ paradise, the inner suburbs and city fringe are what truly give Victoria’s capital its heart and soul. Speak to a Melbournian, and they will tell you about the uber-cool inner north, where the smell of fresh coffee lingers in the air, or the sophisticated south, home to
high-end shopping, the botanical gardens and picturesque Port Phillip Bay. Each side offers a distinctively different experience, so let’s take a look at both. Northern buzz Just 10 minutes by tram from the CBD, in Fitzroy, you find yourself in the middle of Brunswick Street, home to hip cafés, vibrant street art and some great vintage shopping. You can liken the area to downtown Berlin or Seattle. After spending the afternoon visiting the many boutiques and consuming multiple lattes, a visit to Bimbo’s (a local institution) should be at the top of your list. In the north, they like to keep things casual, so it’s AU$4

There are hidden pubs, laneway cafés and some great clearance outlets along Bridge Road, with Gorman, Country Road and Kathmandu all boasting flagship stores. Richmond is also renowned for its live music scene. The Corner is a first-rate venue, famous for hosting big-name bands, such as Pink Floyd, The White Stripes and Midnight Oil, as well as an ever-growing list of local Melbournian legends. Northern Melbourne also homes Australia’s biggest sporting complex – the Melbourne Cricket Ground, or

the outskirts of St Kilda, where the land meets the sea. Lined with designer boutiques and not a few Ferraris, South Yarra’s Chapel Street also houses some of Melbourne’s best bars and clubs. Whether it’s swanky cocktails in The Emerson, a pint of beer and posh pub grub at Temperance Hotel, or house-music until late at Pawn & Co, there’s plenty of fun to be had.
Southern sophistication
One thing South Yarra does particularly well is brunch, though not the free-flow kind Hong Kong specialises in. Two Birds One Stone comes highly recommended – its seasonal menu of organic produce paired with a steamy hot macchiato fuels you up for the day ahead. Smashed ‘avo’ has become the local standard, so bring your appetite!

Sunday stroll. The sprawling streets are dotted with shops of all kinds, plus interesting cafés and bars. Luna Park is the most iconic landmark, with its magnificent entranceway and scenic rollercoaster providing a panorama of Port Phillip Bay and beyond.
Multiple bands, DJs, comedians and dancers invade the foreshore to entertain tens of thousands of visitors. Coupled with the new trend of food trucks, offering everything from candy floss to jambalaya, St Kilda Fest is one of Melbourne’s great events.
In February, the annual St Kilda Fest transforms the southern shoreline.
If shopping, eating and rockin’ the suburbs isn’t your cup of tea (or
rather coffee – this is Melbourne), you can take a stroll through the Royal Botanic Gardens, also in South Yarra. Its 38 hectares house exotic plants and animals, a beautiful lake and even gondolas – a taste of Italy down under! Visit the gardens on any day of the week and you find people hidden in every nook and cranny; the peace and quiet soothes the soul.

Dippy Eggs Makes 6
6 small bowls 6 tsp vinegar 6 tsp food colouring 6 hard-boiled eggs 1 white crayon 12 rubber bands 1 egg carton
Fill small bowls halfway with hot water, adding one teaspoon of vinegar and one teaspoon of food colouring, one for each colour you want to use. To dye an egg a solid colour, place in a bowl for five minutes. You can also write a message or draw a pattern on an egg in white crayon, before dipping it. When it comes out of the dye, the wax will remain white, highlighting the pattern against the coloured background. For a striped design, place rubber bands around an egg before dipping it. Remove the bands, and you’ll see stripes where the bands were. Once done, place the eggs in an empty egg carton to dry. Then you can hide them for a hunt, place them in a decorative basket, or if you’re really hungry, eat them!

Witness Taoist ceremonies, parades with ‘floating children’ and the famous bun-scrambling competition, where competitors climb bamboo towers to collect as many ‘lucky’ buns as they can. WHAT IS EFFECTIVE ESTATE PLANNING? The answer to this question is to speed up the overall distribution of your estate; and to mitigate unwarranted taxes whilst providing the right people with the right money at the right time!
How does one do this? Writing your Will - This will allow everyone you leave behind to understand what happens to everything you own. If you die with a Will in Hong Kong, the Grant of Probate (a legal document releasing your assets) can take months. Without one, it can take years! Setting up a Family Trust — Your Will instructs who gets what BUT it does not speed up time nor does it distinguish how assets are to be given. Trusts can be more specific to certain property (assets you own.) Trusts can be used for Tax Mitigation, Asset Protection and/or Succession Planning and are not just suitable for the rich and wealthy. Nominate Beneficiaries — If you have any life insurance plans, savings plans linked to life insurance or are member of a company pension or death in service benefit then you can have beneficiaries nominated to speed the process of distribution. When your death certificate is received, your Executor or loved ones can submit this to claim the proceeds. Very often, this method of nomination does not require probate (therefore your beneficiaries receive funds within weeks rather than months or years.) Write assets down — People die without letting other people know what they own! This can leave millions in the various financial institutions such as the bank, insurance company, stock broker etc. If no one claims the money, the institution keeps it after a certain period, depending upon the jurisdiction. You should also let people know that you have a valid Will and where it is kept, or no one would know to look for it. Advisably, you should allow your Executor/s a copy of the document and your Guardians, if applicable. Updating and Reviewing — As you acquire assets globally, you should review your estate planning instructions. If your Will only covers certain jurisdictions and you have secured assets in others, you have to update your Will. The same applies to changes in personal circumstances, for example, a Marriage revokes all other Wills but a Divorce does not! Rules and Regulations are changing fast so it is important to keep abreast of what you own and the effect of them on your estate whilst you are alive AND when you pass away … the rules are different!
We at Carey, Suen Will Services have the knowledge and expertise to assist you in establishing your own Will and ensuring efficient Estate Planning.

OUT THERE
Who’s pranking who? DB’s favourite serial griper, Peter Sherwood , makes an unexpected case for the resort’s further development
I
sneaked another look at development plans for DB, a sort of clandestine wikipeek, and discovered a strategy of extraordinary vision, clarity, creativity and common sense. A 13-kilometre cable car from Disneyland to Sunset Peak is proposed, with a shopping stop-off in Discovery Bay, as the spacious plaza makes way for a new ‘outlets’ mall.
planning permission for a major architectural first – a 33-floor hotel built on a massive podium high above DB Marina. The world’s leading designers are competing to construct this exciting new structure, which will guarantee Hong Kong’s image as a world leader in… something or other. Anyway, it should get plenty of free media play and keep the Hong Kong Tourism Board happy.
This futuristic concept will also cater to 120 busloads of tourists a day, direct from the new Hong KongZhuhai-Macau Bridge. Which in fact makes perfect sense – you don’t have to be a town planning guru to see that DB Plaza is a criminal waste of space. I can hear the local objectors now, bleating residents crying ‘foul’ in their unwillingness to sacrifice a little peace and tranquillity for the greater economic good. Such is progress.
There’ll be no more direct sunlight for the marina residents below, of course, so we can expect the usual whining letters to the press. I questioned the cutting-edge hotel proposal myself and was told that what the boat people lose in sunshine they will gain in overhead protection – tropical drenchings being a thing of the past. That seems fair.

For the greater good

That tired cliché, ‘In Hong Kong space is at a premium’, must be on a loop in the brain of whoever gave
I mentioned the enlightened new proposition to the owner of a 65 foot, three-deck yacht. Disbelieving at first, he selfishly debated the impact of such a wonderful icon on the value of his vessel. I explained (to no avail) that it was strictly for his benefit. Most luxury tub-owners
never leave their enclosure, so having a concrete roof over their heads will encourage them to get out of the dark on weekends. They will hightail it for some fresh air, though they may not find much once the super-incinerator off Shek Kwu Chau is up and running. There will always be those for whom every forward step is viewed as blight on the landscape, contributing to the demise of their prized, pristine environment. Naturally, any wails of concern will be taken into account – before being summarily dismissed as the histrionic outpourings of a bunch of sentimental tree-huggers. But then if things in DB were cavalierly democratic, nothing would ever get done. As for the thrilling prospect of a multi-level golf driving range above DB Reservoir, that will accommodate 8,888 mainland punters in a single session, reactionary residents are suggesting (rather absurdly) that it could be the mother of all white elephants. Meanwhile... Happy April Fools’ Day!
Peter Sherwood has lived in DB for 18 years. The former head of an international public relations firm, Peter is the author of 15 books and he has written around 400 satirical columns for the South China Morning Post.
