A seemingly ever-present figure in the community, Jason Jedwood was a much-loved DBer taken far too soon. Known for his affable nature and quick wit, Jason died aged 48 on September 9 after a year-long battle with colon cancer. A Cathay Pacific captain by trade, Jason is survived by his wife Inbal, and children Ryan and Chloe. South Africaborn Jason was cracking jokes until the end and passed in Standford, California surrounded by loved ones. t’s been a big first five years for Love.Together@ DB, the dedicated caring and volunteering platform of Hong Kong Resort Company Ltd (HKR), which has spearheaded a host of initiatives aimed at serving the Discovery Bay community, since its inception in 2012.

This year marks Love.Together@ DB’s fifth anniversary. It is a time to celebrate the good work the platform has done within DB through the organisation and support of diversified programmes and initiatives, with a special focus on the family, the environment, the arts, sports and the elderly.

“In the past five years, the platform has been proactively supporting and co-organising diversified caring and worthwhile initiatives with NGOs, local groups, community leaders, volunteers and residents to foster the betterment of DB and to promote a loving and caring culture in this sustainable and multicultural community,” an HKR spokesperson says. The many popular Love. Together@DB initiatives include eco tours and green workshops, dog behaviour training activities,

the DB Heart Family Storytelling Programme and DB Family Farm. Through its corporate social responsibility work, Love. Together@DB has partnered with NGOs such as the Neighbourhood Advice-Action Council (NAAC) and the Outlying Islands Women’s Association (OIWA), along with residents, green groups and social enterprises. NAAC has worked particularly closely with Love.Together@ DB, witnessing its good work first hand. “Congratulations to Love.Together@DB on its fifth anniversary,” Henry Yip, a NAAC spokesperson says. “Its excellent efforts have contributed quality services to the community to help build a supportive and inclusive living environment for residents. All these achievements would not have been possible without the dedicated and tireless effort of the members and staff of Love.Together@DB.” A number of DB residents have felt the positive impact of the combined work of Love.Together@ DB and OIWA, with Pauline Ho, who took part in a potted planting workshop for the elderly, full of praise.

“It felt wonderful to participate in the activities together with my peers and younger members of the DB community,” Pauline says. “The activities taught me how to appreciate the people around me and treasure the wonderful neighbourhood. In my view, Love. Together@DB’s most impressive activities are the recycling projects at DB Plaza and the potted planting workshops in DB North Plaza.” A parent of a participant in the DB Heart Family Storytelling Programme greatly enjoyed the opportunity for family bonding that it offered. “I have enjoyed spending quality time with my daughter through this programme,” Stacy Wong says. “In the past two years, I have seen her growing in various ways and she has had the opportunity to learn English. I have been impressed by the meaningful theme and key message at each session.” Another parent praised the storytelling programme for its role in strengthening the fabric of the DB community: “In this programme, not only can children enjoy the storytelling, but parents can also gather with other families,”

Hiroko Nakao says. “Because of this, even when we are outside of the storytelling session, we are able to recognise other families who we have met during the story club. This helps build bonds between different families within Discovery Bay.” Of course, the good work of Love. Together@DB wouldn’t be possible without its dedicated volunteers, but according to elderly volunteer Michael So, it’s definitely a twoway street. “As a volunteer, I can gain new and special experiences in life,” Michael says. “Thanks to the volunteering opportunities offered by OIWA and Love.Together@DB, my horizons have been broadened. Helping others has made me happier and I feel that in the process of helping others, I have indeed helped myself.”

Sharing the love

Turning in his power suit for an apron, DB's John Agusto Rocha has reinvented himself as a cooking instructor and Macanese cuisine evangelist. Elizabeth Kerr reports

ohn Agusto Rocha is a walking conundrum. “I’m Eurasian but I don’t know how to speak Portuguese,” begins the Hong Kong-born, selftaught cooking instructor of Chinese and Portuguese descent. “I don’t know how to use chopsticks. I don’t cook Chinese very well. I don’t have a wok at home. I do modern Chinese, to which my mother says, ‘This is not Chinese,’” he admits with a self-aware chuckle. But he’s forgiven for those minor lapses. After all, John’s on a mission to spread the good word about that other Mediterranean cuisine, and help Macanese food secure a place in the culinary canon. The blogger and, as of seven months ago, teacher is perched on a stool in Joyce Chow’s The Cooking Alley in Quarry Bay. He looks in his element. A tiny bit of grey graces the temple but the otherwise youthful chef lounges (as easefully as is humanly possible), surrounded by stainless steel workbenches, industrial freezers and chicken breasts. If he’s itching to mince the peeled garlic in a nearby bowl, he doesn’t show it. Beyond home cooking

After a career in corporate marketing and brand management, and as the boss of his own business, John heeded his gastronomic calling two years ago, ditching a brief semi-retirement. “I thought I wanted to enjoy my

life, travel, but I didn’t want to look like one of ‘those’ types. Facebook can be a bit showy,” he notes, referring to obnoxious social media presences who add nothing to the conversation. “Then I thought why not do something different? I wanted to investigate my background, so I decided to do a family tree, but not just with a list of names. Why not use food to connect all my lost relatives?”

“A lot of people say once you go to DB, there’s no going back. I love it, and I didn’t think I would,” John says. “It’s just so different from Hong Kong. I enjoy going to the island for a night of shopping and dining, and everything is so busy, but once you get to the pier it’s like going someplace else.” He likes the fact that regular supermarket staff and bus drivers will drop a quick hello. “DB is different like that.”

Though the relatives turned out to be less enthusiastic than John, the idea did kick off a project on Portuguese and Macanese heritage cooking. His Facebook page and blog share recipes, history and food anecdotes, while pointing out that food, wine and people go together naturally and always have. “You can’t separate them,” he says. “I want to tell people in Hong Kong that we’re overlooking the very basic pleasures of food.”

Hail to the chef

That’s something John hopes to convey in the book he has planned for 2018. “You don’t need to go to a fancy restaurant all the time. A nice fish shared with friends or family is perfect. That’s the message I want to convey in my book,” he says. “Sharing is loving.”

In seven months, John’s taught 80 classes in four locations (like The Cooking Alley), in English and Chinese, for corporate and consumer learners. And he likes to keep it simple. Conjuring up recipes he learnt from his avo (grandmother), John’s philosophy is if you can’t duplicate it at home – in 30 minutes – he’s failed. A story about trying to master a Swiss roll ends with a hearty eye roll and dismissive wave.

Sharing is one of the reasons John’s been living in Discovery Bay for the past 10 years – sharing and two elderly dogs. A long stretch in Central’s rat race got to be too much a decade ago and he decided to “take it down a notch” by selling his business and making the move.

Since John’s blog was such a hit, cooking classes were the logical next step. Now his work takes him around the city spreading Portuguese food love. “I don’t know why it’s been overlooked,” John says. “I’m a bookworm, and the more I look into it, I’m noticing Portuguese cuisine isn’t getting any recognition as a Mediterranean cuisine.”

ingredients and schedules in mind. “Portuguese people love gatherings. They’ll find any excuse to have a party,” he stresses. “I’ve always believed that if you need to spend three or four hours making dinner, you may as well spend your money at a restaurant. Home cooking is all about enjoyment.” Enjoyment begs the question of alternatives for John. When he’s not working, he’s relaxing with his dogs, learning Portuguese, or dining with friends. Portuguesestyle suckling pig is a favourite. “I like the whole idea of it – from the way it’s prepared to the moment it’s served. It’s got that sharing message. It’s made with just salt, parsley, black pepper and lard. That’s it. The skin is paper-thin crispy.”

John travels too, frequently to Bangkok, a favourite for its adventurousness and receptiveness to new ideas. And is it Babette’s Feast or Eat Drink Man Woman at the top of his food movie list? Julia Roberts’ pasta adventure in Eat Pray Love is up there, as is (no surprise) food blogger biopic Julie and Julia. And it was a Japanese television series, The Emperor’s Cook, which originally inspired the Macanese heritage cooking project.

If all goes well with the forthcoming book, volume two will feature more “creative cooking” – like tom yam risotto – and of course vanishing Macanese specialities. “I fear that in 20 years Macanese cuisine will be gone, so at least I’ll have a record. My book will be out there,” John finishes with a shrug while pondering the future beyond the next class. “I don’t know where this will take me but life is short. You can’t be too rational sometimes.”

People with cancer can feel extremely isolated, particularly when those around them don’t know how to cope with seeing them in pain. And if you have a friend or loved one who has been diagnosed with cancer, you may feel helpless. While everyone is individual and deals with cancer in their own way, there are many ways in which you can

Don’t be afraid to talk to them about cancer.” Joy Juliano-Holmes, a DB resident of eight years, who was diagnosed with Stage 2A breast cancer in September 2016, speaks of the disease as a journey. “There are lessons to be learnt, and relationships to be appreciated,” she says. Joy, a flight attendant for Cathay Pacific, underwent a lumpectomy upon diagnosis; her chemotherapy and radiation treatments finished in April this year. “The most important tool that my family had is patience,” says Joy. “Physically, I was OK but very much

challenged by my emotions. I was at my worst, I think. I would snap over little things and I mean little things. My husband showed tremendous support by asking that I spare everyone else and just take it out on him. He also helped me explain what was going on to our kids.” When all is said and done, a loved one with cancer needs to know you are there for them. “They will find great comfort in knowing you are there to listen to them when they need you,” Katrina says. “You can also talk about future plans, giving them something to look forward to and helping them focus on things that bring them joy.” Provide proactive support One of the most frustrating things about cancer is that it wears people down and lessens their ability to do things they once found easy or enjoyable. To ease this burden, simply offer your help – with the housework, grocery shopping or whatever needs doing. Joy is quick to acknowledge the support she gained from her helpers – both practical and spiritual. “My helpers were a great help as they did what was expected of them – like meal preparation and making sure our flat was germand bacteria-free – but there was a lot more to it than that,” she says. “They constantly included me in their prayers and they involved others from our church in Tung Chung too. They became my prayer warriors here in Hong Kong.” Another hands-on way to show loved ones that you’re there for them is to go with them to medical appointments. “It can be hard to pick up everything the doctor is

saying, and medical appointments and treatment can be particularly stressful after cancer diagnosis,” says Katrina. “Having a friend or family member’s support at these times can be a great help.” Joy’s mother, who came over from the US on learning of her daughter’s diagnosis, was able to give Joy exactly this type of support. “My

My oncologist said I could eat anything other than raw food or fruit still in its skin.” Cancer treatment makes eating big meals difficult for many, so Rachael suggests you prepare smaller meals packed with food high in calories. “Soup can be an easy meal, and you can boost energy intake by including meats, such as bacon or chicken; add some plain noodles or croutons and have cheese on toast as a side. Nutrientdense foods, such as avocado and some seeds, grains or nuts, help keep strength up.” Make mealtimes enjoyable Some people undergoing cancer treatment find that foods can taste too strong or metallic, something Joy experienced in the first few weeks of treatment. This is because the spread of chemotherapy drugs during treatment can damage taste receptors and cause taste changes. “Red meats are more prone to tasting metallic, so stick to serving white meat,” Rachael says. “Try cooking the meat in sweet tasting condiments, like sweet-and-sour sauce or even vinegar. Use plastic rather than metallic cutlery, and note that cold or chilled foods tend to taste better than foods which are warm or hot.” Nausea is another common issue for people undergoing cancer treatment, and a practical solution is to use an extractor fan when cooking to help eliminate aromas. Plain tasting foods, like mashed potatoes and noodles, tend to be

easiest to stomach, and you can try adding some vegetables or white meat for a more substantial meal. When preparing mashed potatoes, Rachael suggests you use whole milk boosted with milk powder to increase the calorie intake. “Fizzy drinks can also help with the nausea and are high in sugar content, which can temporarily boost energy levels.

“Although it’s tough, it’s important to help loved ones maintain a regular eating pattern, even if it’s just eating a handful of crisps or nuts during the day,” Rachael concludes. “Ask them what they feel able to eat and try to make mealtimes as enjoyable as possible. After all, food is meant to be a basic pleasure for all of us.”

icture this. A bright moon is rising between layers of heavy black cloud illuminating trembling trees that loom out of the darkness, their branches reaching into the sky like stripped bones. There’s a penetrating chill in the air and a profound sense of foreboding permeates the gloom as figures lurk in the shadows around the edges of buildings. In the distance, a cat hisses as it skitters nervously away to hide in the safety and darkness of nearby bushes. It is a night when the natural world is forced to confront the powers of the supernatural. No, we are not watching a Stephen King movie. We’re in DB and I’m getting into the swing of things with Halloween fast approaching. Homes and golf buggies are being decorated; Fusion and Wellcome are full of cobwebs, skeletons and carved pumpkins, and there is excitement in the air as children chatter eagerly about their costumes. All Hallows’ Eve When we think of Halloween our minds conjure up images of ghosts, witches, vampires and monsters. On October 31, you can hardly walk through the plaza or along Headland Drive without bumping into a bloodsucking vampire, a zombie or a witch riding a broomstick. Hollywood and literature have crafted versions of these creatures for us but like many fantastic characters of myth and lore, they have a basis in reality.

Halloween has been called many names through the centuries. The original word ‘Hallowe’en’ actually means ‘hallowed evening’ and the last day of October has also been called All Hallows’ Eve, Day of the Dead, All Saints’ Eve and Samhain (Summer’s End). For centuries it’s been considered one of the most magical nights of the year. It’s a night of supernatural power when we are meant to believe the veil that separates our world from the otherworld is at its thinnest and I, for one, have always been more than a little wary about celebrating the Day of the Dead. Even the air feels different on Halloween. Being a superstitious woman of Irish descent who avoids black cats, walking under ladders and putting umbrellas up inside the house, I believe October 31 involves so much more than knocking on strangers’ doors asking for candy and chocolate. Not that I’m saying there’s anything wrong with chocolate. After eating chocolate, I personally feel godlike. Bring forth the chocolates, I say. But there is much more to Halloween than trick or treating.

a night when the dead could cross the veils and physically return to the land of the living to celebrate with their family or clan. As such, burial mounds were lit at midnight, with torches lining crumbling walls, so that the spirits of the dead could find their way in the darkness. Out of this ancient tradition comes one of our most famous icons of the holiday: the Jack-o-lantern. The Jack-o-lantern was used as a light for the lost soul of Jack, a notorious trickster, stuck between worlds. Jack is said to have tricked the devil into the trunk of a tree by carving an image of a cross on it. He successfully trapped the devil but after already having been denied access to Heaven, and then having also angered the devil in Hell, Jack became a lost soul. As a consolation, the devil gave him a sole ember to light his way through the darkness between worlds. 

Day of the Dead Today, we have lost the significance of this most meaningful celebration but the Celts believed that the normal laws of space and time were held in abeyance at Samhain, allowing a window to open where the spirit world could intermingle with the living. uncomfortable and inconvenient of all the seasons. Even in modern Britain, it is the time when the clocks go back and the night rushes early into the afternoon. Halloween was the feast that prefaced months of darkness, cold, hunger and the physical illnesses consequent of all of those.

Summer’s End

What was coming was the season of death – not just of leaves, flowers and light, but of humans, as more would perish in the winter and early spring than at any other time of year. That was why Halloween was widely regarded as the time when the spirits of darkness and fear, the evil and malevolent forces of nature, were let loose upon the earth.

In one sense, Halloween was a celebration of plenty and homecoming. It was harvest time and people would have been well fed after the bountiful summer and autumn seasons and they would have gathered in their homes after long days spent working in the fields. The harvest was stored in the barns and the flocks would have been driven in from the summer pastures in preparation. Traders, sailors and people with skills to offer journeyed home for the celebrations. Halloween was a time for reunions, stories, the settlement of disputes and the learning of lessons to be applied in the next year. More than anything, it was a time for relaxation. In medieval Ireland, local kings were said to hold a feast at their royal halls for a week before and after Samhain, for all these purposes.

Happy Halloween! People reacted to this forbidding prospect in two different ways. In ancient times, Halloween was the festival of prophecy in which people gathered together and most frequently tried to predict the future. In pre-modern times, the

There was, however, the other face of the festival. It ushered in winter, the most frightening,

prediction most often sought was who would live through the winter. Bonfires were lit for protection and torches carried around homes and fields sun-wise, from east to west. The flames, smoke and even the ashes were deemed to have protective and cleansing powers. Another reaction was to mock darkness and fear by singing songs about spirits and lighting candles on the graves of the dead. In the 16th century, people began going from house to house impersonating the souls of the dead. They recited verses or songs and received offerings on their behalf, usually a small round cake called a soul cake. For me, there is magic in a night when pumpkins glow by moonlight. Instead of a terrifying night spent watching fearfully out of windows for movement while bonfires burned brightly, Halloween has become a joyous holiday for families to get together and have a bit of fun by dressing up as ghosts and goblins and wandering the streets with friends. Halloween heralds hocus pocus, spell making and the telling of creepy stories; it’s a night to eat, drink and be scary. Even anticipating the festival makes me feel as happy as a witch in a broom factory. Happy Halloween everyone!

BAYWATCH From humble beginnings in 2002, Around DB has grown into a vital cog in the Discovery Bay community and a monthly staple among residents. Henry Benjamin reports

s Around DB celebrates its 15th anniversary, there are plenty of highlights, the odd challenge and no shortage of fun and games to look back on. After starting off as Inside DB, a brief change of ownership led to the new title, and Around DB continues to be a reliable and vibrant source of information for all DBers.

The Bay Media Group umbrella grew to include Life on Lantau in 2015 and has undergone a number of exciting developments in recent months as the company moves into the online, design and publishing world. Starting out The brainchild of publisher Corinne Jedwood, Inside DB first hit the shelves in October 2002 after Corinne saw the need for a community-based publication that would highlight local triumphs and concerns and promote local businesses and events. “When I arrived in Discovery Bay, I heard that people were organising events for the community and wanted to advertise them, so I decided to help,” Corinne says. “I started to promote all of these things at Fusion, but I thought there must be a better way. I started with a simple newsletter and it grew from there.”

It was hard graft in the early days, with Corinne undertaking the majority of the work herself but the publication was an immediate success. In fact, Inside DB was a trailblazer of sorts in Hong Kong, the first of its type in the territory. “The whole concept of community magazines in Hong Kong started with Inside DB. I actually got two articles in the SCMP,” Corinne says. It was in 2006 that the portfolio first started to grow, with Corinne identifying a need for an Englishlanguage real-estate magazine and website in Hong Kong. Squarefoot was launched in 2006 and continues to be a leading player in the real-estate market.

“No-one had thought of it; there was nothing for expats in English at the time. If you wanted to find a flat you would go from one realestate agent to another throughout Hong Kong,” Corinne says. “2006 was a big milestone because suddenly the Inside DB office, in one of the flats at DB Plaza, had 30 people working in it,” she adds. “It was really exciting.” The mini-boom was short-lived, however, with Corinne deciding to sell Squarefoot in 2007 at a time when she needed to dedicate more energy to her personal life.

with the launch of Around DB,” she says. “It never ceases to amaze me that even though DB is such a small community, I’m never short of interesting stories to cover. There is always so much to write about, so many inspiring and driven people to feature. Of course, the addition of Life on Lantau in 2015 has only added to that as we can now cast our net island-wide. “Around DB continues to evolve and go from strength to strength, and to that I owe a real debt to my DB-based writers,” Rachel adds. “Through our human interest stories and articles promoting resident-driven events and causes, I believe we help bind the community together and I’m proud of that. If we stir things up a little on occasion, that’s no bad thing either.” There have been many brilliant minds that have contributed to the success of Around DB over the years, with photographer Baljit Gidwani one person in particular who continues to have a huge impact on the magazine. Corinne describes the current team as “very varied,” with experienced heads meshing with exuberant youthful ones. While Rachel is supported editorially by Sam Agars, Andrew Spires joined the company in 2016 as senior graphic designer. Connie Cottam and Monika Carruthers now ably drive the sales and advertising, and as special publications and online editor Claire Severn is supported by digital and sales assistant Patricia Jover, and interns Katrina Mercado and James Allen. Maxine Parry is office manager. “We have a few millennials in our company now and they are helping a lot because they understand social media so well,” Corinne says.

Expanding horizons A major new development for Bay Media Group is the sleek Around DB and Life on Lantau website, which provides a treasure trove of useful information for the community. Relaunched in July this year, under Claire’s watchful eye, the all-new www.arounddb.com offers a unique and streamlined user experience. "I'm extremely proud of the new Around DB and Life on Lantau website, which re-launched this summer after months of careful planning,” Claire says. “Our aim was to provide the community with a one-stop shop for everything they need to know about Lantau life, in an easy-to-use format. “An extension of the monthly magazines, the site is updated every day with all the latest news, events and exclusive giveaways, and it’s the go-to place for finding local business contacts and the latest hot property picks,” Claire adds. “Whatever you need to know about DB, www.arounddb.com is the place to find it!" While Bay Media Group now also offers a social-media management service for companies looking to increase their online profile, Claire’s online role has expanded to include special publications editing. Publications currently in the works include Journey to Profitability by Igor Pistelak and Elizabeth Sale, and Bay Media Group’s own in-house listings guide, The Best of Lantau (out now for 2017/ 2018). “We were always being asked to expand our services to the community by providing companies

with additional support, and helping authors publish their books, so we decided to open the Bay Media Publishing and Design Studio in May this year,” Corinne explains. Headed up by Andrew Spires, the Bay Media Publishing and Design Studio ensures the company stays ahead of the pack in an everchanging media landscape, and it handles anything from books, brochures, flyers and websites to logos and branding. “I've worked in different design roles over the years, but none as varied and exciting as this,” Andrew says. “It's great to be able to work with local small companies to really drive their business forward through professional design. Our clients range from fashion and retail through to the banking and pharmaceutical industries. Navigating the

Exploring the prevalence of both pre- and postnatal mental health issues, Kate Farr finds out what can be done to help

ccording to the Family Health Department, up to 80% of new mothers in Hong Kong are affected by the ‘baby blues’. Characterised by mood swings, tearfulness and irritability, this temporary state is caused by hormonal fluctuations on the third or fourth day following birth, and is usually nothing more than a passing blip. But for up to 20% of new mums, this low mood persists, becoming the longer-term, and potentially far more serious, postnatal (postpartum) depression. Prenatal (antenatal) depression, is thought to affect up to 25% of women during pregnancy, with some studies showing even higher numbers. But despite the widespread acknowledgement of both pre- and postnatal depression within the medical community, the baby blues still carry a stigma. Expectant and new mothers are shocked to find themselves unhappy around their long-anticipated ‘bundles of joy,’ and many don’t seek treatment. Pregnancy woes Sofie Jacobs, founder and head midwife of Hong Kong-wide

midwifery service Urban Hatch regularly sees expectant mothers suffering from prenatal depression – a condition that is rarely discussed, but that she believes is vital to highlight. “While pregnancy is automatically associated with joy, for many women and their partners, it can also mean financial worries, changes to the relationship, and physical discomfort, not to mention issues arising from a previous traumatic birth, miscarriage, or infertility,” Sofie says. “All of these can be triggers to antenatal depression.” Sofie believes that, in order to shed some of this stigma, the more negative aspects of pregnancy and birth must be openly discussed. “We need to get the word out there that pregnancy doesn’t always mean happiness, and that it is ok for women (and men) to talk openly about it and seek support.” Sofie is also quick to point out that as with any form of clinical depression, antenatal depression can be treated – usually via psychological treatment, sometimes combined with medication.

Birth traumas DB-based doula and birth educator Cathee Jackson works with mothers to assist with a positive delivery, and believes that experiencing a traumatic birth can have a significant impact on a new mother’s mental health. “There is a cultural pressure to think that a healthy baby is all that matters, and how a baby arrives is not important and that isn’t true,” she says. “Both parents’ feelings are valid. So getting support, and being able to come to terms with each unique birthing experience is important.” When it comes to obtaining that support, Cathee stresses the importance of starting close to home and expanding your network outwards. “First and foremost, being supported by friends and family is key,” she says. “Family is so important in offering physical support, for example, helping to care for the baby while the mother rests, and providing emotional support. Friends in a similar situation can also be a great support, but on the other hand, this can sometimes lead to comparisons and one-upmanship – even without meaning to.” 

Cathee recommends that mums, who experience persistent mood swings after their confinement look to professionals for support. “External bodies, like local or online support groups can be helpful and there are options of medication for things like sleep support,” she says. “It’s important for mums to discuss things with their GP. Doctors can prescribe antidepressants or anxiety medication if necessary, and they can also refer patients on for therapy treatments.” Transitioning to parenthood Psychologist Dr Quratulain Zaidi of Central’s Mind N Life practice has many years’ experience working with mothers suffering from postnatal depression, and she believes that it’s high time we were more open about both the positive and the negative sides of parenthood. “We’re conditioned to believe that, right from the moment of birth, a new mum is supposed to feel nothing but joy when she looks at her baby. This makes it so much harder to speak out about feeling afraid, overwhelmed or isolated, despite these feelings actually being incredibly common.” So why is there such a code of silence around these issues? Dr Zaidi explains: “Sadly, there is still such a stigma that surrounds both depression and also the struggle that many new mothers face – we’re all meant to be experts from day one! But the reality is that new parents are bombarded with so many lifechanging situations as soon as they have a baby; from the loss of their old identity and the acceptance of their new role, to the seismic overnight

shift in the relationship with a partner – the changes are numerous and significant.”

1. Get lost in Habana Vieja UNESCO World Heritage Site Habana Vieja, the atmospheric old town, is the most visited spot in the city. Walk through its streets and you’ll feel like you’ve entered a time warp – the country was largely cut off from the outside world from 1959 (after the Cuban Revolution) to 2014, when former US President Barack Obama reopened international relations. In any given alley, you’ll find old ladies people-watching from crumbing Spanish-colonial balconies, kids playing soccer, dogs barking and bands playing.

2. Drink Hemingway-approved Mojitos Cubans take their rum seriously, and you’ll be offered a Mojito or Cuba Libre (Rum and Coke) just about everywhere you go. Why not follow in Ernest Hemingway’s footsteps, and check out two of his favourite bars – La Floridita and La Bodeguita del Medio.

3. Visit Habana Catedral Dominated by two asymmetrical towers and framed by an ornate coral facade, Habana Catedral is a fine example of Baroque architecture. In the grandiose, light-filled interior, you’ll spot many paintings and frescoes you recognise – copies of original works found in cathedrals and museums worldwide.

4. Dance salsa on the street You won’t have to look far for free entertainment during your stay in Havana – simply follow the music until you reach a crowd of locals showing off their dancing skills. Find a partner and dance to the lively reggaeton (LatinCaribbean music). Afraid you have two left feet? Just let the rhythm lead you.

5. Stay at the Hotel Nacional de Cuba No trip to Havana is complete without a nostalgic stay at Hotel Nacional de Cuba. Opened in 1930, when the country was a prime travel destination for the world’s elite, Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner, Marlon Brando and even the Duke and Duchess of Windsor were among its early clientele. While the hotel no longer carries the clout it once did, its Art Deco interior still oozes old-world glamour.

6. Flag down a vintage taxi Havana is awash with colourful, classic cars, which the locals use to ferry tourists from point to point. This makes for a fabulous taxi ride but be sure to buckle up – these vehicles are 1950s-vintage and Cubans drive fast. 

Stroll along the Malecón Stretching 8 kilometres along the coast from the mouth of Havana Harbour, the Malecón is the city’s most soulful boulevard, where the locals come to meet, greet, date and debate. Visit in the early evening, when the sunset casts an orange glow over the bay, before spilling over the sea wall and illuminating all the action.

As you stroll through Habana Vieja, vendors try to sell you pre-1960s books, musicians serenade you, kids play and Latino music blares. On every street corner, you’ll find groups of men playing chess or dominos – get chatting and they’re more than likely to invite you to a game.

Visit the Museo de la Revolución for exhibits devoted to the Cuban Revolution that saw the advent of communist rule. Formerly the Presidential Palace, the museum provides a good introduction to Cuban history, past and present. The Granma Memorial, close by, houses the yacht that transported 82 revolutionaries (including the Castro brothers and Che Guevara) from Mexico to Cuba in November 1956.

10. Party the night away Cubans love to party, and Havana’s bars, tango houses and nightclubs stay open into the early hours. Vedado, in the Central Business District, has every kind of dance venue you could dream of, and you’re guaranteed a good time, whether you are into salsa and Latino, R&B, hip-hop or rock.

• ½ small onion, finely chopped • 1 egg • 2 tsp parsley, finely chopped

Defrost the cod at room temperature, and then marinate with 2 tablespoons of sea salt for at least 3 hours. Steam for 9 minutes. Drain well and flake into tiny shreds. Bake the potato until cooked through, remove the skin and mash until very smooth. Combine the cod, potato, onion, egg and parsley, working the mixture by hand until it is soft and smooth. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. Form the mixture into small oval-shaped cakes between two teaspoons, and then coat with breadcrumbs. Deep-fry in olive oil over a high heat. Serve warm or hot with chopped tomato and parsley.

Chicken Rice Soup Serves 4 • 2 cups chicken stock • 1 medium onion, finely chopped • 2 chicken thighs ⁄3 cup Thai rice or pasta

• ¼ cup mint leaves, chopped • 3 tbsp lemon juice ⁄3 cup red bell pepper

• 1

Pour the stock into a large saucepan, add the onion and chicken. Simmer for 10 minutes before adding the uncooked rice or pasta. Add the mint and some ground pepper to the stock. Add the lemon juice and red bell pepper. Continue to simmer until the rice or pasta is cooked to your liking. Serve garnished with thin lemon slices and additional mint leaves. 

Tuna Paté Makes 2 cups

• 1 medium onion, minced • 2 garlic cloves, minced • 8 tbsp unsalted butter • 2 cans tuna in olive oil • 3 tbsp tawny port • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a small skillet over a medium heat until it simmers. Drop in the onion and cook, stirring often, until slick and golden brown. Add the garlic and cook for 2 minutes more. Remove from the heat and leave to cool at room temperature. Combine the onion mixture, butter, tuna, port wine and lemon juice in a food processor and buzz to form a smooth paste. Season to taste. Smear the paté on bread, toast points or plain crackers – it will last for 1 week, tightly covered, in the fridge.

B: Dogs and Babies, a weary adage – and babies get the kudos. It’s time someone featured the hounds. That would be me. The question is as old as time. Well, as ancient as the moment wolves said, this is no good – we keep getting shot at – and decided to become dogs because life as a lupis could hardly get colder or shorter on something decent to eat. Wolves as dogs is a better deal despite a loss of independence. That said, the price is crushing, involving humiliating begging and showing faux excitement when ‘master’ (they hate the word) returns home from his stupid job. The question is, do dogs talk? Speaking as a dog owner (neither do they appreciate being ‘owned,’ but for regular meals and a roof they suck it up), yes, of course, they can talk. We talk to them all the time. We’d feel silly if it was some dumb monologue. In the doghouse

Dogs are in a state of constant bemusement at our strangeness. Our two hounds, Tina and Holly, confirm our peculiarity with their eyes, tilts of the head and a flutter of the tail, or not. They are quite chatty, starting in the morning as I put on my shoes to take them out. Holly looks at Tina with a deep sigh, her eyes rolling heavenward. Out of courtesy she looks back at me and then says to Tina: “Look at the predictable idiot. There he goes again putting on those silly cow skins. Here we are ready to

kangaroo. Now, won’t that be special? More eye rolling. “Who does this cretin think he is, Monty Python or Pavlov?” asks Tina. “Whatever… try to salivate, as if you’re expecting haute cuisine. He’ll think that’s cute.” I know they’re playing me for a sucker. Regardless, I press on with the Vaudeville through to bedtime. Pre-bed is a last chance for a toilet break. I begin the cow skins ritual. They are not amused. Besides, it’s raining. Four exasperated eyes cruise skyward. “Right, Tina, wag your tail to tell the old phoney how ecstatic we are about another walk through the wet bushes,” says Tina. “Don’t forget to pee even if you don’t feel like it, or we’ll be out there all night.”
