We are not architects who do healthcare. We are healthcare architects
What does this mean?
It means we chose this profession so we can do more than just design buildings. We chose it to design solutions that can change people’s lives significantly. Because when a transplant patient receives a new heart, or a mental health patient reaches a breakthrough, or a physician develops a medical procedure that improves the lives of thousands, it happens inside a space designed by a healthcare architect. This is why we arrive every morning with our sleeves rolled up and ready to work.

Making Healthcare Simpler
Array Architects is committed to improving healthcare outcomes by providing solutions informed by integrated insights across the organization.
Master Planning
Master planning should not occur in a silo. We integrate strategy, operations, facility, and financial considerations in an iterative process to develop a master plan that can be implemented and provides the flexibility to accommodate future unknowns.
Pre-design Planning & Optimization
Building a new facility is not always the right answer. Before you go down that path, we work with you to understand whether you are experiencing a physical issue, an operational issue, or both. We use lean methodologies and simulation modeling to analyze your workflows and pinpoint the root cause of your problem leading to a more focused investment of your capital dollars.
Design & Architecture
Our firm develops and implements concepts that emerge as transformative built solutions. Array remains focused on the healing that will take place within our clients’ facilities: the lives affected by the building’s shape, performance, and functional adjacencies. As a healthcare-exclusive practice, our singular focus and collaborative approach facilitates operational excellence and drives innovation.
Interior Design
Beyond creating beautiful spaces influenced by hospitality, we have a responsibility to bring the latest evidence, benchmark data, lean thinking, and examples of successful projects into the design process. By doing so, we help our clients realize their full potential to drive a change in culture, improve patient outcomes, increase patient satisfaction, and foster an environment of collaboration.
Project Operations
Array is committed to project management, acting as center of excellence for this practice. Our clients are confident in the consistent high-value delivered through their built initiatives.
Master Planning Methods
Market Analysis & Demand Forecasting
Our team aggregates multiple data sources to provide a comprehensive and dynamic view of the community you serve and your competitors. Using predictive modeling, we project how the market is likely to change, and the impact of that change on your organization and future volumes.
Building Infrastructure Assessment
The building infrastructure assessment is conducted through a combination of direct observation and review of existing documents and facilities maintenance data, as well as interviews with facilities engineering personnel. The assessment will be visual and identify immediate, short term, and long-range capital investments required to meet regulatory requirements.
Optimizing throughput and resource utilization increases efficiency, decreases cost, and may ultimately reduce the square footage required to meet project needs. We evaluate departments using multi-faceted assessment criteria and benchmarks to improve workflow and throughput, ensuring efficient utilization of space and resources.
Simulation Modeling
Building a model with readily available data from the electronic medical record allows healthcare leaders to confidently move forward with high level decisions. The simulation model can help teams see the results of various scenarios in a quick, concise manner so they can make strategic decisions supported by data analysis.
Data Analysis & Visualization
Large amounts of data are collected at every hospital. As we work to help teams determine the best solution within their unique constraints, we use data visualization to show trends in a meaningful, easily interpreted format. This approach allows teams to use their data to confidently make decisions.
Scenario Development & Evaluation
We create a cost and return-based decision matrix to distill the many options that surface through the planning process. This matrix is used for decision support throughout the master planning process and is critical in helping to clarify key strategic goals into one actionable strategy.
Financial Decision Support
Estimating the financial repercussions of individual decisions and strategies enables effective decision making. We believe that estimating processes dependent upon development milestones do not convey the right information at the right time to influence critical decisions. In our approach, we create a cost and return-based decision matrix that is used for continuous decision support.
Pre-design Planning & Optimization Methods
Process Analysis & Design
Our job is to assist with analyzing your workflows and determining where value is added. This helps us see where the waste is and eliminate those nonvalue-adding activities, allowing your work to flow more efficiently. We combine reliable tools (i.e., stakeholder engagement, failure modes and effects analysis, and process mapping) with expertise to develop a solution tailored to your organization.

The simulation model can help teams see the results of various scenarios in a quick, concise manner so they can make strategic decisions supported by data analysis.
Value Stream Mapping
Mapping the value stream from customer request to completion is one of the best ways to determine whether your system is providing value to the customer. Value stream mapping clearly depicts the interactions between departments and technology platforms, and it shows the process times associated with each step, allowing the team to see where to focus their improvement efforts.
Lean-Led A Approach
At Array, we foster a culture of continuous improvement. Our Lean, process-led design approach helps healthcare organizations better prepare for the future.
Healthcare is a complex and diverse enterprise that is constantly in flux. New legislation, shifting reimbursement structures, evolving technology, and changing consumer preferences are just some of the forces reshaping the industry. In this dynamic context, healthcare organizations struggle to anticipate investments that will have long-term value and yield a desirable return on investment. Our approach is designed precisely to meet those goals.
Our pragmatic process is underpinned by a unique planning toolkit, rigorous analysis, and testing. By including the clinical team as a partner in the planning process, we make more informed decisions to maximize flexibility, efficiency, and return on investment. We approach every project without preconceived notions of what the options are, instead working voraciously with you to understand the problem your organization is facing. We then filter the components of that problem by looking at them from multiple lenses, allowing us to generate options based on your specific needs and our experience with healthcare institutions throughout the country. Equipped with the tools to assess those options, we develop several iterations of potential solutions and then test them and can pinpoint the best option using quantitative information.
Above all else, our expertise lies in the facilitation of the design process. As pioneers of Lean facilitation in the healthcare design industry, our ethos of humility and collaboration is not merely philosophical—our team is trained and adept at Lean facilitation. That facilitation is critical to delivering the greatest possible value in your capital project.
Understanding that different projects merit different levels of scrutiny, Array customizes the toolkit we use based on client desire, user availability, and health system infrastructure.

CLEVELAND CLINIC INDIAN RIVER HOSPITAL
Health & Wellness and Cancer Center
Vero Beach, FL
In conjunction with Anchor Health Properties and Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital, Array designed a new ambulatory care campus built on approximately eight acres adjacent to the medical center. This new interdisciplinary development features an integrated medical home model, multi-specialty health and wellness center, and a cancer center. The project facilitates cross-disciplinary care coordination and a unified patient experience and is a market differentiator within the Vero Beach community. The wellness center is designed to promote preventative care, health education, and healthy living while providing specialty care, chronic disease management, diagnostic imaging, and primary care services. The design eases customer service operations from registration and greeting through the visit with clear wayfinding cues. A universal clinic design allows for flexibility by session across all of the medical and surgical subspecialties.
Along with the new outpatient center, the health system engaged the same design team to bring a new cancer center to the community. The new Scully-Welsh Cancer Center, affiliated with Duke University, brings state-of-the-art, compassionate care to the Indian River community. The cancer center features multi-modality clinics, integrated treatment planning, infusion, radiation therapy, pharmacy, resource and education programs and access to clinical trials and research. At its core, the program and its facility seek to treat the whole patient and their family. Our focus on operational improvement during early design led to a 45-minute reduction in the average length of stay for all infusion patients.
Designed to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and connections, a healing garden with outdoor dining forms the pedestrian link between the cancer center and health & wellness center. The design of both the cancer center’s patient experience and the building establishes the hospital’s brand for the expanded cancer program. Together, the cancer center and the health & wellness center form a new outpatient campus conveying Cleveland Clinic’s strong brand and the comprehensive care available.
BAPTIST HEALTH SOUTH FLORIDA Miami Cancer Institute
Miami, FL
Array was engaged to provide operational improvement, programming and design services for the fit-out of a Cancer Research Building on the new campus of the Miami Cancer Institute for Baptist Health South Florida. The Institute, affiliated with Memorial Sloan Kettering, provides improved patient access to treatment and advanced protocols. The new program consists of clinical trials, a genomics lab, a USP 800 pharmacy, outpatient bone marrow transplantation, integrated palliative care and many sub-specialty clinics.
As the delivery of oncology services drives a tighter connection between research and clinical care, this building represents the unifying program of spaces in that equation.
Our Lean approach determined that several principal investigators and program leads were not yet on board—flexibility was paramount. During future state mapping and rapid testing,
each workflow and space was studied, tested, and crafted to represent the balance between integrated research and exemplary patient care. Array developed unique empathy and journey mapping exercises to help the clinical leads and design team gain insight around the cultural expectations of MCI’s broad patient base within Miami and internationally. This resulted in the creation of expansive and lightfilled gathering zones and more intimate ‘living rooms’ with adjacent nourishment amenities.
MCI committed to patient and family engagement as it sought to redefine the characteristics and environment for palliative care, connecting clinical trial patients to a support system affording patient understanding, choice and dignity. The new building stands as a hallmark for holistic, integrated cancer care.
BAPTIST HEALTH SOUTH FLORIDA
Baptist Hospital of Miami East Campus Hope Tower & Central
Miami, FL
Energy Plant
Array collaborated with planning and design firm Wilmot Sanz on a five-story, 233-bed inpatient tower to increase capacity on Baptist Health’s flagship campus in Miami. The new tower effort also included a renovation of approximately 8,000 SF to accommodate new intensive care support services. The initial program included a 48-bed ICU on the ground floor and a 48-bed medical oncology unit inclusive of a USP 797 / 800 Pharmacy.
The design program included the demolition of a medical office building and relocation of related roadways. The new structure connects with the facility on the ground level to provide visitor entry and direct access to surgery and emergency services. A bridge connection is provided on the 4th floor to allow direct access from the upper levels of the adjacent building. One of the design challenges was to identify family / visitor flow to the new bed tower from existing points of entry.
The exterior design solution extended the Spanish Mediterranean vernacular that is prevalent on campus. The Bed Tower includes three internal courtyards, one of which is programmed for family waiting to support the ICU. Exterior components include sloped metal barrel tile roofing, precast concrete mass, and insulated impact-resistant glazing.
A central energy plant expansion was also completed by Array concurrent to the bed tower. It provides both immediate generation needs and accommodates increase demand of A/C chillers and back-up generators for master planning growth initiatives. The design incorporates state-of-the-art controls to allow connectivity to existing infrastructure and support the Campus’ emergency preparedness plans.
LASER SPINE INSTITUTE
Corporate Headquarters & Ambulatory Surgery Center
Tampa, FL
LSI has experienced exponential growth, requiring premature renovation and cost. As the demand for laser spine surgery increases, LSI intends to build several more ambulatory surgery centers across the country. They recognized that refinement to their approach was necessary to build an environment that supports their needs. The new driving goal was to conceive a flexible care model, define the ideal process to deliver the best care to their patients in an efficient manner, and to develop the most appropriate environment to support these operations. In addition, LSI decided to take their patient-centered approach one step further and resolved to be the first Planetree designated for-profit healthcare organization in the country. The Laser Spine Institute has entrusted Array to lead them through the design process in support of these goals.
The new headquarters features perks intended to better improve work-life balance by making employee needs more accessible throughout the work day. In partnership with local vendors and retailers, Laser Spine Institute will conveniently offer discounted concierge services and amenities on-site for employees. Space is allocated for such services as an online ordering and pick-up option for grocery shopping, a “dinner on-the-go” service from local restaurants, a drop-off and pick-up area for laundry and dry cleaning, an ATM and local banker accessible several hours a week, as well as a hair and nail spa, barber shop, postal service and on-site masseuse.
NICKLAUS CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
Pinecrest Physical Therapy & Urgent Care Center
Miami, FL
Array was engaged to provide planning and design services to convert a shopping center store and restaurant into an inviting pediatric specialty medical complex. The complex offers urgent care and sports medicine / rehabilitative services.
This two-story space provided design challenges related to proper building egress, heavy equipment reinforcement and floor-toceiling heights. Creating an ideal child-friendly space for both scheduled patients (sports medicine / rehab) and urgent care drop-in patients provided opportunities to design intuitive wayfinding, an inviting elevator lobby, and an engaging waiting area.
The well-developed Nicklaus Children’s Hospital brand allowed the design team to celebrate wellness and encourage patients to return to the playing fields and sports courts in optimal shape. By incorporating basic radiology services, the rehabilitation center provides one-stop convenience for patients and families alike.
VERO ORTHOPEDICS & NEUROLOGY
Medical Office Building
Vero Beach, FL
Developer Optimal Outcomes and their client, Vero Orthopedics & Neurology, engaged Array to provide exterior and interior design services for a new, twostory, 55,000 SF Medical Office Building (MOB) in Vero Beach. Vero Orthopedics & Neurology’s goal was to expand services in a prime location to serve the needs of their growing practice and community.
The new MOB has a modern, clean aesthetic with a medical office suite on the ground floor, including clinical spaces and
diagnostic imaging services powered by state-of-the-art technology. The second floor houses an outpatient rehabilitation suite with physical therapy services available in individual treatment rooms, and a gymnasium/exercise area. The MOB is designed to accommodate future expansion, including a planned addition of an ambulatory surgery center on the second floor.
NICKLAUS CHILDREN’S HEALTH SYSTEM
Orthopredics & Spine Institute
Miami, FL
In order to better serve the needs of patients at their main campus, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital sought to address functional issues with the existing space dedicated to outpatient orthopedics and spine services. Array was selected to program and design an expanded Orthopedics and Spine Institute, to be located on the third of floor of Nicklaus’ Research Building.
A program validation phase provided a solid planning focus as the team was challenged to accommodate the expanded program within the floor’s given shape. Multiple test fits were generated to achieve the desired spatial balance between orthopedics, sports medicine, and spine
specialties, as well as an imaging suite that serves all three practices. Registration and support areas have been designed to meet new functional and brand requirements, providing welcoming patient waiting and efficient flow across the floor.
A direct connection from the third level of an adjacent parking garage will provide a main entrance to the Orthopedic & Spine Institute’s waiting and reception areas. In addition, a new three-stop elevator will enable access from the Research Building lobby to an open and inviting atrium within the institute. The ground and second floor functions will remain operational throughout construction of the project.
INSPIRA HEALTH Greenfield Hospital
Mullica Hill, NJ
Array was selected as part of an integrated team to provide planning and design services for the replacement of Inspira Health’s Woodbury hospital. After selection, Inspira asked Array to lead a rapid assessment phase integrating their strategic plan, financial projections, and operational goals along with site and cost analysis to determine if the replacement hospital should remain on the existing site or move to a new site in the service area.
After determining a new site would best serve the health system’s goals, Array began our process-led Lean design approach to program and plan the new facility. Cross functional work sessions were held with each team to map the current state flows of every department. Armed with a detailed assessment, we worked with the teams to develop the ideal future state and work flows for the new facility.
The 460,000 SF facility sits on a 100-acre site and includes 210 private patient rooms, smart room technology, and a chassis built to grow. The facility features a split flow emergency
department that includes an integrated pediatrics sub-unit including observation and inpatient beds. The surgical and procedural areas have been combined into a universal interventional platform to promote flexibility and efficiency.
All patient care units are designed with staff effectiveness and safety in mind. Family and patient comfort is incorporated through large windows, distributed pockets of waiting and respite, a single point of checkin an registration for all visits and visitors, outdoor dining and garden areas, as well as a technology hub in the lobby to assist patients and families with personal health technology devices and integration.
By embarking on a highly-collaborative structure from the outset, the integrated team identified methodologies that have resulted in a significant square footage reduction from the original benchmarked program, as well as defining a schedule that resulted in an operational facility within 33 months from the start of design.
KAISER PERMANENTE
Regional Clinical Lab & Office Space
MidAtlantic, US
Array was engaged by this national healthcare leader to address significant growth in the Mid-Atlantic region and align lab operations with Kaiser’s national strategy. The regional expansion/lab alignment project involves the development of a long-term replacement facility on the same site as the aging facility - maintaining operations on site throughout construction. The new facility was planned and designed to support long-term membership and growth within the region.
The Array team worked closely with client stakeholders to develop a state-of-the-art laboratory utilizing robotics and advanced functional planning techniques, which have been developed as part of Kaiser’s corporatewide improvement strategy nationwide. The proposed solution includes expansion
capabilities for laboratory functions while also accommodating related administrative functions. In addition, conference and training spaces were included in the design to address future needs of the region.
The building design and materials palette were selected to reflect a duality of functions. The materials are both “high tech” (metal and glass) as an expression of the advanced technologies being utilized in the space as well as “high touch” (wood and stone) to provide a human-scaled and familiar environment to the staff occupying the facility. The public will experience the facility as a part of the urbanizing fabric of Rockville, Maryland. The project is designed to achieve LEED Gold certification.
COOPER UNIVERSITY HEALTH CARE
