Arriola & Fiol

was founded in Barcelona in 1987 by the two leading architects Carmen Fiol and Andreu Arriola. Both partners bring more than 25 years of experience to their roles in architectural, urban design and landscape architectural projects. Managing multi-disciplinary project teams and servicing sophisticated clients have been the key to the success of these projects, which have included collaboration with artists Joan Mir贸, Richard Serra and Beverly Pepper.

Company profile

Arriola & Fiol projects have been awarded in several international and national competitions, such as the Prince of Wales Prize and the IULA International Urban Landscape Award. Their projects are currently being built in Europe and in North America.

The company design team has participated in the transformation of urban sites in Barcelona, as well as a spectacular regeneration of the city itself. In this capacity, they designed and created some of the most memorable contemporary public spaces in Barcelona, varying in scale from sensitive restorations and excavations in the areas of unique historic significance, to projects of a vast scale at the edge of the city, requiring a substantial infrastructural redevelopment as well as architectural and landscape intervention.

A&F company profile

Outlined Services and Expertise A&F Urban Civic Projects is a new theoretical and practical approach that intrinsically combines architecture with urban design and landscape design, foreseeing the transformation of urban sites into civic outdoor rooms. It will establish a new project for urban regeneration, founded on the principles of design excellence, social well-being and environmental responsibility within a viable economic and legislative framework. We believe that public space is the leading issue of urban form. Public space as a combined structure of different streets and squares is the essence, the substance of coexistence, interaction and the redundancy that shared life brings. We design the structure of spaces for the mobility, leisure and representation that link spaces of activity. When we speak of public spaces we have in mind the scale of the urban whole.

Key Staff Carmen Fiol is an architect, urban designer and landscape architect, co-founder of the practice Arriola & Fiol. A prominent academic and architectural theorist, she directed the research for her influential book Barcelona Perifèria Cubista and she earned Doctor Europaeus from UPC in 2007 with the book Grids and Diagonals. Carmen studied at ETSAB and at Columbia University, and received a William Kinne Fellowship. Always involved in education in parallel to running her own practice, she has taught at Harvard, Leuven, IUAV and UNICA, as well as at ETSAB.

Andreu Arriola is an architect, urban designer, and landscape architect, and co-founder of the practice Arriola & Fiol. Andreu studied at ETSAB, he received a Fulbright Grant and a Master of Architecture from Columbia University. He was visiting professor at the Academie van Bouwkunst van de HR&O in Rotterdam, at La Sapienza in Rome and at UCLA in Los Angeles. He is professor at ETS d’Arquitectura de Barcelona since 1994.

Structure and capacity A&F multidisciplinary team is composed by 20 people that mainly include architects, urban designers, landscape architects, engineers and industrial designers. Currently the team is composed by two Director Architects, three Project Coordinators, nine Project Assistants and six Internees. Collaborators include technical specialised experts, administrative and financial consultants. Furthermore, the firm counts on a consolidated network of international partners all around the world. With regard to technical and practical supplies, our design practice applies a methodology that uses as main tool software Bentley Microstation. This CAD application allows georeferencing architectural objects to the territory and incorporating comprehensive information about them. Furthermore, we are used to work with 3D physical and digital models which serve both as study materials as well as a document presentation view customer and end users.

Environmental approach Consciousness. Our approach to environment sustainability is based on the simple principles of vernacular architecture. The topography, the pre-existing conditions and climate of the site are key parameters that guide the design of both internal and external spaces of our projects. These principles are reinterpreted according to energy demands and comfort of today’s society and obviously reinforced by the accurate application of the most modern technical facilities and devices. Experience. Arriola & Fiol prides itself on several projects which demonstrate the practical and successful application of ecodesign principles. The housing tower for 100 young people Torre Urrutia stands out as one of the most significant examples of an environmental responsible design practice. Furthermore, it was selected to represent Spain at the WSB08 (World Sustainable Building Conference 2008) in Melbourne, Australia.

We have found that the more proactive the scheduling of milestone deliverables is at the outset of the project, the more predictable the project schedule process becomes. It is also a communication plan. Arriola & Fiol quality management system complies with the requirements set out by the ISO 9001and ISO 14006. Using ISO 9001 and ISO 14006 helps ensure to get consistent, good quality products and services, under a sustainable approach, which in turn brings many business and civic benefits.

Capability Statement Arriola & Fiol is providing certificate of professional indemnity insurence and public liability insurance presently held by our company in Europe. Furthermore, we will adapt to the specific conditions of the present tender.

The matrix simplifies the control of the overall project schedule.

Company profile

Our Project Team’s approach is to bring very unique and coordinated skills that will bring unparalleled value to the projects, an Integrated Design Process. A matrix of roles and responsibilities will be an important management supplement used to give each team member a list of critical items that need to be addressed on a week-by-week basis.

For us, the beginning of a design always consists in getting to know a place. The project evolves from the place itself, which is not merely a backdrop that limits and hinders the design. In our analysis of a place, meaning the site and the people, we uncover guidelines that determine the design. Our first visit to a place is very significant. We experience its atmosphere with all our senses. Not only the architecture of the place but also its other distinguishing features become clear to us: how it is used, the points, lines and levels that evolve from its uses, traffic, pedestrian routes, open-air events and meeting places. We especially notice the things that address the senses: background noise, sunlight, wind and vegetation. We also observe the surroundings of the place: its topography, the layout of streets, the height of the buildings, the density, history and lifestyles of the neighbourhoods. After making these observations, we decide which features we would like to emphasise in the design and which to tone down to give the place character. We also collect historical information. With the help of city maps, photographs, and anecdotal, newspaper and literary descriptions, we seek out how and why the city of today developed as the result of many different interventions in the course of time. We merely add one more, further turning the wheel of history. We design with intuition and feeling, and with as little material and expenditure as possible. This minimalism rationalizes and simplifies the design, making it sensitive and convincing. Our construction materials are almost always traditional: brick, stone, wood and metal. Yet we use them in unusual ways, eschewing their classical applications.

The teachings of the Barcelona School, a reading of the territory and of the city, and a mastery of the scale of housing come together in our projects and form part of the international architecture debate. We concentrate on opening up the classical language of symmetry, experimenting with a fractal approach. We seek to combine a reading of the imprint of history with formal and programmatic innovation. With their impressive architectural and technical expertise, Andreu Arriola and Carmen Fiol are surely among the most accomplished designers that we have when it comes to knowing how exactly one should go about transforming the existing urban fabric. In a country and a culture where the specialization of landscape architecture has yet to come into being, Arriola & Fiol may be said to have defined through the actuality of their practice the full scope of what the emerging field of landscape urbanism might one day come to be.

When, in a perhaps not too distant future, historians set out to explain the architecture of Barcelona in the last years of the 20th and the early part of the 21st century, they could hardly find a body of work that offers a more faithful representation of this period than the work of the practice formed by Andreu Arriola and Carme Fiol, who qualified as architects at the ETSAB in 1981.
