“BEST EYEWEAR” o to www.thegaia.org. You can read updates from the founder of the Global AIDS Interfaith Alliance, William Rankin, who is also a former associate rector at Pasadena’s All Saints Church. The stories he shares from his charitable work in Malawi, one of the 11 poorest countries in the world, will touch your heart and inspire you. Actors Jane Kaczmarek and Bradley Whitford heard some of those stories of tragedy, illness and abject poverty and felt a “huge responsibility to participate.” They starting planning a gala fund-raiser, set for April at their home in San Marino. They really put a spin on Arroyo’s entertainment theme this month by combining it with charity in such a big way. But what’s so amazing is that it doesn’t take a celebrity income to make a difference: $5 pays for an orphan’s school supplies, and $50 pays for a teacher’s monthly salary. The fact that it only takes $15,000 to take care of an entire village for one year is astounding. Pasadena resident Dr. Don Thomas and his wife Mary travel every year to Malawi, where GAIA helps 50 villages. He said, “I have seen villages dried up and hopeless turn around in a year or two into nourishing, nurturing villages on the way to being self-sustainable. … Our dollars go a long way, which is one reason I’m very excited about GAIA.” Closer to home, Stephanie Kinnear educates us about the work the Junior League of Pasadena does to empower young women and lets us know about upcoming events, including a “day at the races” fund-raiser; Carl Kozlowski takes us on a tour of Sierra Madre’s centennial festivities; and Ron Garmon transports us to a baroque concert with Musica Angelica. I also talked with Pasadena filmmakers Ann Hassett and Bob Niemack, the charming couple behind the state-of-the-art films at the newly renovated Griffith Observatory, a fabulous and free source of entertainment — and education. —Julie Riggott

KIDSPACE CHILDREN’S MUSEUM’S VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATION, CIRCLE OF FRIENDS, raised more than $300,000 at its annual fund-raiser on Feb. 10. This year’s benefit theme was Kidspace KaddyShack, A Ball of a Benefit, held at Parkway Grill and Arroyo Chophouse. Many of the 431 guests arrived decked out in argyle sweaters, tennis togs, golf caps and plus-fours. The event began in a tent on the Parkway Grill side of the parking lot, which was transformed into a hub of bidding activity for the silent auction items that raised more than $80,000. The silent auction highlights included pitching lessons with La Cañada resident and Chicago Cubs pitcher Glendon Rusch and four tickets with backstage passes to the teen show, “Hannah Montana.” A wildly successful live auction followed dinner. This year’s KaddyShack event produced a new score of record-breaking numbers. Board member Peter Lynch and wife Marianne helped achieve this goal as the winning bidders on a golden retriever puppy. Kidspace is committed to providing exhibits and programs in the arts, sciences and humanities that promote imagination, exploration and discovery. The Circle of Friends supports Kidspace with volunteer hours and fund-raising. For more information about Kidspace, call (626) 449-9144, or visit www.kidspacemuseum.org.

Musica Angelica's Martin Haselböck plans a passionate ‘St. Matthew.’
w 14 ~ MARCH 2007 ~ ARROYO
BY RON GARMON ~ PHOTOS BY PAUL ANTICO
HEN MARTIN HASELBÖCK CHEERFULLY asserts that recreating Bach begins as an act of historical imagination, it's difficult to argue and impossible not to be charmed. The former Court Organist for Vienna and a world-renowned conductor, composer and soloist, the tall and sprightly director of L.A.'s prestigious Musica Angelica baroque ensemble speaks with deep conviction and disarming enthusiasm. The upcoming performance of J.S. Bach's eternal masterpiece, “St. Matthew Passion,” on March 20 at Pasadena's First United Methodist Church pairs Haselböck's two orchestras, Musica Angelica and Wiener Akademie Baroque of Vienna, in spiritual and mimetic rapture. Though signing many a piece of rock journalism, I'm a closet classicist enough to trip a spring on the conductor's irresistible flow of talk by remarking that Bach was the closest thing to a rocker in the classical tradition. Haselböck shot back with: “Because he has a beat that goes over and under and through everything, yes?” Then he really warmed to the challenges of this mightiest
of baroque masters. “Bach is a very intellectual composer and can be brought to life in many different ways,” he said. “What I think is important is to make him speak to us in a modern language. In earlier times, stress was put on making the sound big. We want to make it very fast, very direct.” This (almost!) rockist punch and verve he alluded to was on display during an otherwise decorous program of Bach cantatas on Feb. 4 at All Saints’ Church in Beverly Hills — one of the ensemble’s many L.A.area venues, which also include the Norton Simon Museum and Pasadena Presbyterian Church. Haselböck led the Musica Angelica musicians through Nos. 82, 202 (“Wedding”) and 49 (“Dialogue”) with dynamic velocity, gliding baton and group into the opener with the sidelong grace of a lead guitarist. In No. 82, an earnest, manly profession of Christian faith, baritone Florian Boesch packed infinities of universal meaning into every orotund German phrase, while his duet with soprano Linda
Perillo in the “Wedding” cantata wafted delight as ethereal as Gonzalo Ruiz's magnificent oboe lines tracing the air in joyful sinuosity. The “Dialogue” cantata closed out the program, invoking a universe of soul and Creator as self-contained and shattering as an old blues 78. What will such bright energy bring to the “Passion” and its epic narration of the first Gospel? Large-scale Bach presents special problems, as the director notes: “The thing about this ‘Passion’ is that it calls for two orchestras. Usually there is a separation of one big orchestra, and the conductor says, ‘You go there; you go there.’ What we do is bring together two different groups of musicians, one European, one American — two groups with very much their own style: one European choir, one American; three soloists from America, three from Europe. It's kind of a cultural connective project, so we're all very excited about the idea of it. There's an emotional aspect too, since the temptation is to let yourself go, let yourself float with one of the grand masterpieces of the world.” Haselböck incorporates period musical instruments, like the viola da gamba and several ancient species of oboe and bassoon, into the mix. “Bach is
telling a historical story in a very complex way, and one must get his historical sound right or it becomes kitsch — the mood isn't right, it's all gestures,” Haselböck says. “These instruments — which, incidentally, Bach used — are very important. With a large symphony orchestra, the effect is very different because everything is heavier, which, in some ways, can make a muddy sound. Thus we incorporate instruments that aren't part of a modern symphony orchestra. The people watching will see some strange-looking instruments!” Directing Musica Angelica for a second season, Haselböck retains an immense regard for his adopted second home. “With my Vienna group, I have more projects than I have over here, and I guest-conduct symphonies over here and in Europe too,” he says. “For me, it is ideal here. I like California very much, and this is a pioneer project for me, to build up something for music in this huge area, where so many people love baroque music. Last year, we started, and this year the audiences have grown bigger.” What is the connection between baroque music and Southern California? “At first, we see the green way of life here, and [Bach’s] baroque music
arrests us with its directness, its freshness,” the conductor replies, waving his hands as if trying to summon it as sound. “Again, on the other side of things, when you have a hard life and work hard, baroque music can be very entertaining, and you are opened up to a totally different world.” After the performance in Pasadena, Haselböck will take the “Passion” on the road: “We're traveling to Mexico City, then to a church in upstate New York, and we go to eight European nations after.” Is there any special meaning in the “Passion” this Easter? “Yes. For me, there's a meaning that is more than just music. In this world, in Europe, we fear you in America are growing apart from our world in some ways, even though we have the same kinds of interest in the same kinds of art. ... In a time with so much war around, it makes us connect with our reason for being here. Why are we here? How can we communicate? How can we connect? “I had this idea two years ago to set up this tour, and the resonance has just been fantastic. I think one of the reasons is it is a very good gesture to connect. the unification of people through music. People can be united this way.” While packing up to go, I asked about the aural suitability of the First United Methodist Church venue, and my tape recorder captured this telling bit of romantic meticulousness in Haselböck 's method: “There must be resonance, but not too much resonance, since you can't hear Bach clearly enough anymore! You cannot measure the audio decay there in seconds. Every composer is different. Bach wrote for a church with wooden floors, wooden ceilings and very little acoustics.” He sighed contentedly and looked distant and happy, explaining, “One cannot just replicate historical conditions Music Director Martin Haselböck and stop there! Thinking your way back into his time is very important, but that is only half of creation. You must say, ‘I am here now. I am a modern person and have my own emotions.’ And that's where the creation begins. “For me, the reconstruction is but the second-best way to make music. New ways and new ideas are the thing,” he adds. “I've done this piece many times and still discover new things. It's one of the things a conductor does.” AM Martin Haselböck conducts “St. Matthew Passion” at 8 p.m. March 20 at First United Methodist Church, 500 E. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena. Call (310) 458-4504, or visit www.musicaangelica.org. RON GARMON, unlike most rock critics, is a closet classicist, and not a secret jazzbo. He has written about music for Los Angeles CityBeat and the Los Angeles Times.

Girls Rock! The Junior League of Pasadena’s newest programs empower girls just when they need the most help — in middle school.
w 18 ~ MARCH 2007 ~ ARROYO
BY STEPHANIE KINNEAR
HEN JOHN SNIDER’S WIFE URGED HIM TO participate in Be R.E.A.L., a series of seminars for young girls and their guardians that focus on healthy relationships, with their then-11-year-old daughter Sara, he agreed. When he showed up for the first session, he noticed something that he hadn’t expected: He was the only father in attendance. The fact that he was the only man in a room full of mothers, grandmothers, aunts and sisters did nothing to faze him; he settled into the fiveweek program and is convinced that he came out the other side a better father. “When I grew up, my relationships with my friends were very different than my daughter’s. [Be R.E.A.L.] helped me better understand the trials and tribulations a middle school-age girl goes through, and the pressures that they are under and how they communicate,” explains Snider from his office in Pasadena. “I understand my daughter a lot better now: I’m more attuned and more sensitive to her problems. Guys punch each other in the shoulder and we go on with our day; it’s different for girls.”
It is different for girls, and that’s exactly what the Junior League of Pasadena understood when it launched the Be R.E.A.L. seminars as a component of its most recent signature project, Girls Rock! Founded in 1926, the Junior League of Pasadena is a nonprofit organization of women whose mission is, according to President Mara Lague, to promote volunteerism, to train leaders and volunteers, and to improve communities. In recognition of its commitment to that mission, the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Greater Los Angeles Chapter, honored the JLP as Outstanding Volunteer Organization at last November’s National Philanthropy Day event. In 2004, after a decade-long commitment to improving conditions at James Madison Elementary School and the surrounding neighborhood in Northwest Pasadena, the organization polled its members and the community and decided to direct its focus on middle school girls (sixth to eighth grade). “We recognized an underserved group in middle school girls,” explains JLP Marketing Director Julie Mayo,

(Not Pictured): Program Development Director Kerry Dolan, State Public Affairs Council Representative Lainie Rose Miller and Recorder (current) Jennifer Bender. Photo courtesy of JLP while sitting in the group’s headquarters near Old Pasadena. “Middle school is the time when they lose academic focus, and we decided that we wanted to come up with a program that would support and empower girls of that age.” Girls Rock! is currently made up of three components: Be R.E.A.L.; Body Wise, a girls’ nutrition and fitness conference; and Side by Side, a mentoring program for girls and JLP members that is designed to foster the young women’s volunteer spirit as they give back to the community. All three programs are intended to give young girls the skills they need to lead physically and emotionally healthy lives. With more than 200 active members, the JLP is responsible for every aspect of the Girls Rock! program, not to mention countless side projects. Members work on everything from fund-raising to administrative duties to mentoring. “We take on leadership roles in areas where we might not be experts,” explains Mayo, who had very little marketing experience prior to taking the position at the JLP.
And the women aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty. “We’re actually more hands-on than people think we are,” explains Lague. There is no better example of that point than the trip Lague and four other JLP members made to New Orleans last year. In early October, Lague, Deborah Yim, Nancy Reynolds and Phyllis Wilburn, along with close to 1,000 other volunteers from Junior Leagues across the country, traveled to New Orleans and spent one week helping to rebuild homes and communities there. They poured concrete, caulked, scraped and painted. With aching backs and sore muscles, they returned day after day until the work they set out to accomplish was done. Lague worked almost exclusively on the home of a 76-year-old woman named Ms. Lily. “She was so welcoming,” remembers Lague. “She just thought we were angels; that’s what she called us.” While the JLP’s volunteer work does occasionally reach across the country, since 1996 the group
has focused primarily on “nurturing children through family support” in the local community. And right now, its top priority is Girls Rock!, a project that many of the members feel incredibly passionate about. Lague recalls seeing girls become friends through their participation in earlier seminars. She is also heartened by the girls who went through the Side by Side project and then started volunteer groups at their schools. “It’s good for them to see that — even though they’re different — girls, across the board, all face the same problems,” adds Mayo. Although the Girls Rock! program is only a little more than two years old, the JLP is constantly researching and talking with adolescent girls in the community in order to make sure the services it offers meet the young girls’ needs. By doing so, organizers can modify and build upon what they’ve already begun. The group is also constantly strengthening its family component and finding new ways to bring in —Continued on page 20 parents and guardians. “We ARROYO ~ MARCH 2007 ~ 19

Girls Rock! and Winner’s Circle Girls Rock! Are you the parent, guardian, grandparent or friend of a girl in middle school (sixth to eighth grade)? Then think about getting them involved in one of the Junior League of Pasadena’s Girls Rock! events. All programs are designed to supply adolescent girls with the skills they need to live physically and emotionally healthy lives and to give caregivers the information they need to be effective and positive role models. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved in the upcoming months: BodyWise — Girls’ Nutrition and Fitness Conference From 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. March 10, the JLP will hold its third annual BodyWise conference at Caltech’s Baxter Hall. The BodyWise conference is designed to empower girls by providing them with information about nutrition, healthy eating, exercise and fitness, as well as advice about developing and maintaining a positive body image. Be R.E.A.L. Series Starting in April, the JLP will offer a five-week series of workshops focusing on developing strong, healthy communication with family and peers. The series will take place on Wednesday nights (April 18 and 25; May 2, 9, and 16) at the Pasadena Senior Center. The Be R.E.A.L. series, now in its third year, is an informative set of sessions designed to educate and empower both adolescent girls and their caregivers. Guest speakers and session leaders will include Dr. Melissa Johnson and Robin Starkey Harpster, MFT, from the Institute for Girls’ Development. Winner’s Circle For the past 23 years, the JLP’s “Center Stage,” a fashion show/auction/luncheon and dinner, was one of the group’s largest annual fund-raisers. In the last five years alone, “Center Stage” raised more than $1 million to fund projects in the community. This year, however, the JLP has decided to trade in fashion for a little thoroughbred action. Instead of “Center Stage,” the JLP is turning to “Winner’s Circle,” a “day at the races” fund-raiser to be held at the Santa Anita Race Track. The event, set for April 20, promises daytime activities as well as an evening cocktail party at the exclusive Turf Club. There will be a race run in the JLP’s name that day, the last Friday of the season. The fund-raising event will be topped off by dinner and dancing, and an auction in the beautiful art deco Chandelier Room. Tickets are $100 (day) and $125 (evening). Proceeds from the event benefit the JLP's community projects. For more information about any of these events, please contact the Junior League of Pasadena at (626) 796-0244 or jlpi@earthlink.net, or visit www.jrleaguepasadena.org.

Excuse me
How to deal with those darn interruptions BY HANK SCHLINGER, Ph.D. IN HIS BOOK “THE TALKING APE: HOW LANGUAGE EVOLVED,” Robbins Burling wrote: “Nothing so decisively sets us apart from our primate cousins as our constant chatter. It is no exaggeration to credit language for the very humanity that distinguishes us from the beasts from which we sprang.” As we are all too aware, sometimes it’s hard to shut us up. In fact, some people seem to have such a need to talk that they constantly interrupt. Sometimes someone interrupts when you’re talking to that person alone. And sometimes someone interrupts when you are talking to another person. People who interrupt are rude, right? Well, actually, no. We are the ones responsible for their interruptions. That’s right, we unknowingly reward others by allowing them to interrupt us. So what can we do to deal with those darn interruptions? We can start by teaching young children not to interrupt. When young children first learn to talk, they go around saying everything out loud. Once parents are confident that their children have learned to talk correctly, they encourage them to say those things to themselves until they become like us, with constant silent monologues. Almost as soon as they learn to talk fluently, young children begin interrupting adult conversations; they don’t know any better. After all, we have always listened to them up to this point. A common time for young children to interrupt is when we’re on the telephone. Sometimes we try to ignore their interruptions, but they immediately become louder and go on longer, so we give in and either end our call or tell the person on the other end of the line to hold on. You can teach your youngsters not to interrupt and to wait until you’re finished with your conversation by first modeling such behavior for them. After all, it’s not fair for you to interrupt and then not allow them to interrupt. The first time they try to interrupt, you should tell them to wait until you’re finished, but — and this is important — make sure you finish after only a few seconds. Then you should thank (praise) them for waiting and listen to what they wanted to tell you. Over time, gradually lengthen the period they must wait until it equals the length of your conversations. But always go to them, praise them for waiting, and ask them what they wanted to say. If they try to interrupt during this process, you must ignore the interruption and its inevitable rise in volume when your child realizes that you will not pay attention to her. Remember, just because your children say, “Excuse me,” doesn’t automatically mean they get to interrupt. As parents know, young children will say “excuse me” over and over again because it has worked in the past to get you to stop what you’re doing and listen to them. entertaining Award-winning producers Ann Hassett and Bob Niemack talk about the challenges and joys they experienced creating new films for the renovated Griffith Observatory.

BY JULIE RIGGOTT ~ PHOTOS BY MICHAEL GERMANA
NN HASSETT AND BOB NIEMACK HAVE SPENT THE past two-and-a-half years in another universe. The awardwinning producers from Pasadena, best-known for their work on documentaries addressing social issues and crises, produced much of the theatrical entertainment at the newly renovated Griffith Observatory — from the state-of-the-art planetarium show to the history and renovation film at the Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon Theater and even the videos shown on the shuttle buses traversing the winding road to the peak of Griffith Park. When executive director of the Friends of the Observatory Camille Lombardo approached her about becoming the executive producer for these projects, Hassett had just about given up that work to focus on fund-raising and event planning. Raising money for their four kids’ soccer and water polo teams introduced her to the nonprofit world in Pasadena, and she went on to work for local groups such as the Levitt Pavilion, Pasadena Arts Council, Pasadena Playhouse and The Pasadena Symphony. But FOTO and the Director of the Observatory Dr. E. C. Krupp wanted someone with Hassett’s experience, who could oversee budgets, hire and manage personnel, assist with the creative side and, above all else, make the films entertaining. “We were in the middle of Hollywood, and they didn’t
want it to be seen as just another dusty, old educational film,” Hassett says. She was up for the challenge of executive producing all of the film and video projects, though she knew very little about the subject. “I was fearful in the beginning that the scientists were not going to have anything to do with me and were going to feel like, ‘Oh no, this is somebody coming from trashy Hollywood,’ but that was not the case at all. The animators and Don Dixon [Griffith Observatory’s astronomical artist] were always so welcoming and so great; they wanted it to be good,” Hassett recalls. “And when they found out how little I knew about astronomy, instead of really being harsh on me, they were fabulous because now, they thought, we can test these things. It became a joke: If Ann understands it, the public will understand it,” she adds, laughing. Niemack tried to teach his wife a little about the night sky. He woke her up early one morning to look at a bright planet visible to the naked eye. Lombardo got a little worried when Hassett called it a “star” the next day. Lombardo also requested Niemack’s expertise. He signed on with his employer, LMNO Productions in Encino, to co-produce, direct and write “The Once and Future
Griffith Observatory” for the Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon Theater and the shuttle videos, which introduce the Observatory on the way up and provide a history of NASA on the way down. Hassett faced some unique challenges with “Centered in the Universe,” the show at the Samuel Oschin Planetarium. She recruited some of the finest animators in the industry to create a 3-D digital film like no other. Utilizing the crisp, lively technology seen in “Toy Story” and other popular films, the animators had to work with mathematical formulas on a flat screen and imagine what it would look like projected on a 70-foot curved dome. With no way to test their work along the way, the animators — with help from director/writer Dixon and writers Krupp and Andre Bormanis, story editor for “Star Trek Enterprise” — succeeded in making a dazzling film. After the star show, the seamless, uncut digital film takes the audience from Alexandria, Egypt, circa 140 A.D., through the advances in scientific understanding from Ptolemy to Galileo to Hubble, to the present-day Observatory. Along the way, we
witness the Big Bang, as a tiny molecule explodes into a milky galaxy. Dixon insisted on authenticity; from the location of planets in the sky to the kind of feather in Galileo’s quill pen, everything was meticulously researched. And the score, featuring completely original music, sets an inspiring mood. The film ends with a shot that will take your breath away: As if on a simulated helicopter ride, viewers swoop in on the Observatory in its renovated beauty. Another risky, expensive and seemingly impossible task involved hiring actors to provide live narration for each showing — nine each day four days of the week, and 11 a day on weekends, quite possibly the biggest weekly audience of any theater in Los Angeles. Directed by Chris Shelton, the actors memorize the entire half-hour script and walk amongst the audience with a glowing orb at the beginning and end of the show. As the writer and director of “The Once and Future Griffith Observatory,” Niemack spent five months putting together the film, doing archival and historical research and documenting the renovation of the Observatory. The show is worlds
apart from typical stodgy educational fare. With production qualities worthy of a feature film, a stimulating combination of photos, vintage film footage, interviews and coverage of the renovation, it is a fascinating introduction to the Observatory. Scattered throughout the script are tidbits such as the fact that more people have looked through the Observatory’s telescope than any other in the world, and since it opened in 1935, more than 70 million people have visited. For Niemack, the project was an opportunity to break out of his usual executive-producing responsibilities at LMNO and the subject matter he’s so familiar with. Between them, Hassett and Niemack have earned 11 Emmy Awards, two CableACE Awards and a Peabody, among many other honors, as producers of television programs for major networks and cable venues such as HBO, Discovery Channel and The Learning Channel since 1980. “Before there was Oprah and Dr. Phil, we were making documentaries about people whose families were falling apart and who were at that very moment in some kind of crisis. So our films were very psychological, very —Continued on page 46 ARROYO ~ MARCH 2007 ~ 45

emotional, very socially oriented, dealing with how the world works and how it doesn’t work,” Niemack says. “This is a vacation from all of that — making films about great scientific achievements or the scope of the universe we live in — so it was wonderful fun.” Niemack interviewed Apollo 9 astronaut Rusty Schweickart for an intriguing segment about how the astronauts studied the night sky at the Observatory in training for navigating the spacecraft in 1969. In a particularly entertaining scene, he directed Nimoy, the narrator of the program and namesake of the theater, and his wife Susan in a bit where she talks about the necking that teens will undoubtedly do in the theater now that the planetarium isn’t the only game in town. In a telling example of what inspired and excited him, Niemack recounted an adventure in filmmaking. “One night on a full moon, I was over on one of those hilltops where it gets pretty dark with a cameraman. We carried two HD cameras all the way out on this point, and we’re waiting for the money shot as the moon rises over the observatory. … So we’re waiting for the moon to come up, and it came up in another place. I totally misjudged,” he says, laughing. “So in order to get another shot of this moonrise, we had to hike down the hill so that we were lower than the ridge. … It ended up being one of the closing shots.” With all the people, including FOTO, the City of Los Angeles and the creative teams, behind these films, Hassett feels guilty being singled out for attention and wants to be sure that collaborative effort is recognized. Of course, partnering again professionally with her husband of 20 years was a pleasure that made the experience even more amazing. “It’s really an honor, and then that we got to do it together. … The Observatory really became our playground,” she says. Niemack adds, “As a maker of documentary films and reality television that focuses on problems or people in crisis, this really was like sitting for five months in Zen meditation in its exhilarating, refreshing look at the world. It’s like a vacation. It just put my head in a totally different place — and it was great to do with Ann.” AM

The fire of youth Chef Micah Fields keeps the menu ‘lively’ at Pasadena’s Vive. BY STEVE COULTER ~ PHOTO BY MICHAEL GERMANA
YOU MIGHT THINK THAT MICAH FIELDS IS either very talented or very, very lucky. At only 23, he is executive chef for Vive, an ultra-hip restaurant and lounge that occupies a prominent street corner in the heart of Old Pasadena. It’s the kind of high-profile assignment that chefs twice his age, and with three times the experience, would kill for. But Chef Fields has at least a couple of very strong advantages — youthful optimism and energy. Born and raised in Pasadena, Fields is a graduate of the city’s famed California School of Culinary Arts. He enrolled straight out of high school to become a pastry chef, but soon found himself immersed in the world of fine cuisine. “I wanted to learn how to do the desserts,” he says, “but it just so happened that C.S.C.A. has a classical French [approach]. From there, I started to learn about Chinese food, about Latin fla48 ~ MARCH 2007 ~ ARROYO
vors – it got a lot broader.” That breadth is reflected in the bold but approachable Latin-Asian fusion menu offered nightly at Vive (Spanish for “lively”). Combining elements of Chinese, Caribbean and South American cuisines, Fields jumps effortlessly from ropa vieja with crispy plantains to char sui pork loin with ginger apples, and on to Alaskan halibut and garlic long beans with coconut broth. Of particular note are Dungeness crab wontons with tomatillo salsa and crème fraîche, and the Vive by 4 — a well-balanced entrée sampler of sesame tofu, wok hay shrimp, chicken stir-fry and Cuban steak with beans. A strong menu, coupled with live salsa music, free dance lessons and a lounge atmosphere, is causing quite a stir on the local nightlife scene. Fridays are Prive/Latin Night with hip-hop, disco, ’80s and Latin hits; Saturdays are VLounge Euro
Night with hip-hop, house and club hits; and Sundays feature live salsa music with free dance lessons from Rodrigo Guzman, starting at 4 p.m. As Vive’s reputation continues to grow, so too does Fields’ star continue to rise. How does it feel to have such a prominent position at your age? I don’t take this lightly at all, and I try to be humble about it. I’m still shocked to this day that I have this job. It usually takes a long time to get to where I am, many more years of training, so I guess I’m very blessed to be where I am right now. Being from Pasadena, I have a lot of support. I have all of my friends here and all of my family here. They come out to the restaurant to eat, so I get a lot of moral support. —Continued on page 50

You seem to have some impressive experience. Who have you worked with? After culinary school I spent a month in London with Gordon Ramsay at his restaurant in Chelsea. I went from there to Spago in Beverly Hills for about six months, and I was a private chef at a sorority house for a few months. Then I went to Kendall’s Brasserie, which is a Patina restaurant downtown. I was there for a couple of years before I did a 15-course tasting for the owners of Vive. We took it from there. How did you develop the Vive menu? I developed about 80 percent of the menu by reading books and experimenting in my home kitchen. We didn’t put any of the items from the original tasting on the menu, so I had to develop the menu from scratch. I played around with some ideas from books and the Internet and came up with 30 or 40 options, and Vive’s owners said, “Here are the ones we want.” Then my sous-chef, who worked at the previous restaurant [at this location], also came up with a couple of dishes based on items from that menu. What are some of the challenges in creating a fusion menu? When I first got introduced to the idea of Latin-Asian fusion, I thought it was pretty crazy. I thought it was almost impossible to do, but then I realized they both use rice, and they’re both very much into herbs and spices. Do you think your age has anything to do with the success of Vive? I don’t like to think of myself as some great young chef that made it. I like to think that any chef could do this by experimenting and having fun with it. COMMUNITY
Peaceful, easy feeling Sierra Madre takes pride in 100 years as the town that time forgot. BY CARL KOZLOWSKI THROUGHOUT ITS CENTURY OF EXISTENCE, Sierra Madre has cultivated an air of mystery. Even though it was once the end of the Red-Car Line, since that transit line’s demise in 1961 it has willingly faded into the foothills of the San Gabriel Valley. Yet it possesses a magical allure that holds its residents for a lifetime and engages visitors who stumble upon its myriad charms. It’s not often that one can still find a town where the jail has become a one-room bed-andbreakfast run by a lawyer, where there are as many churches as there are liquor stores, and where a metal sculpture of Huck Finn stands as the centerpiece of the entry to the town hall. Even more amazing is the fact that this town isn’t in the middle of nowhere like “The Andy Griffith Show’s” iconic Mayberry, but rather can be found within a halfhour’s drive of the second-biggest city in America. That’s why it’s big news that Sierra Madre is throwing out its welcome mat to the world this year to celebrate its centennial, and March is perhaps the greatest month of all to schedule a short road trip for a visit. After all, the townspeople should be just regaining their footing after their gala Centennial Opening Night party on Feb. 23, and will be hosting a plethora of events ranging from the Woman’s Club Centennial Celebration to the Huck Finn Camp-Out and Fishing Derby. “The idea of the centennial was to provide a few key events for each of the nine months [through October] and provide a framework for other community groups to look at what they have accomplished,” said Toni Buckner, the city’s director of library services and head of the Centennial Committee. Buckner was asked by former town mayor Rob Stockley, who had begun planning for the centennial celebration in 2005, to oversee the Committee. Buckner thought it was a great honor to accept. “It’s a nice match for the library because we co-own archival materials on the town with the Historical Society and keep them here at the library,” Buckner explains. “And this month, of course, brings us the biggest event of any year.” Buckner is referring to the town’s annual Wistaria Festival, which celebrates the fact that Sierra Madre is home to what the Guinness Book 56 ~ MARCH 2007 ~ ARROYO

of World Records has classified as the world’s largest blooming plant — in addition to its status as one of the Seven Horticultural Wonders of the World. The plant took decades to grow to its present size occupying a whole acre, and thousands of visitors make the trek each year just to stare at the sheer scope of the florid beast. Other prime events this month include the March 2 opening of the Creative Arts Group’s “Impressions of Sierra Madre,” featuring paintings and drawings representing various aspects of life in the hillside community. Artwork will be displayed throughout the downtown area and will be judged by Segil Gallery’s Laura Segil, as well as by local artists Walter McNall and Daryl Bryant, who will determine the lucky winners of ribbons and cash prizes. Art will also be the draw as the Creative Arts Group adds to the Wistaria Festival hysteria with a student art sale, featuring ceramics, acrylics, watercolor, enamel and more, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 25 at 108 N. Baldwin Ave. And history buffs can get their fill by attending the “History of Early Sierra Madre and Ascension Church” talk by Father Roger Wood at 7 p.m. March 12 at the Church of the Ascension. But no matter how much fun you have in March, be sure to make return trips later in the year for such events as the St. Rita School’s per-
formance of the Thornton Wilder standard “Our Town” in May. In fact, judging by the loving way that Buckner speaks of her home city, there can be few more appropriate places to witness that American classic. “I feel it’s so accessible, a community that you can walk, and I see many people walk from one end of town to the other just to get their exercise. You get to know people — there’s always someone to chat with and say hello,” says Buckner. “It’s a great place to have a family. We were fortunate to raise our daughters here and be able to go to the library and have children’s story hour and a town pool to learn how to swim. People put their roots down here, so you get a sense of place. I’ve been at the library for 30 years now, and its director since 1985, but it’s always been a rich experience.” AM For more information about centennial events, contact the Sierra Madre Public Library at (626) 355-7186, or the Community and Personnel Services Department at (626) 355-5278. CARL KOZLOWSKI writes regularly for Pasadena Weekly, the national business magazine Motto and the Web magazine www.arrivistepress.com. He also has had articles published in the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune and The Progressive.

Reality check Understanding the way to wealth in real estate BY TIM AND BARBARA CONROY EVER CATCH THE LATE-NIGHT GET-RICH-QUICK TV GURUS spinning tales of “nothing down” real estate deals? Ever wonder if there is any truth to their claims that unimagined wealth is as simple as rolling the dice and coming up with a 7/11? Well, there is a grain of truth to their claims. However, anyone with common sense knows that any success requires hard work. Real money comes from the work of learning about and investing time and money in a business that can produce substantial wealth. There are four pillars of real estate investing that provide the foundation for successful wealth-building. Cash Flow. As in any business, after all the bills, taxes and loans are paid, there should be some money left in our pockets. Astute acquisition and earnest management of quality properties have the potential to produce a profit, the goal of any good business. Cash flow is largely determined at the time of acquisition of the property by buying with a sound financial structure that makes it possible to produce net income. Clearly understanding the dynamics of property management builds future value. A well-maintained property commands higher rents and, with tight management of maintenance costs and good fiscal control, the business will thrive. Income Tax Savings. One of the benefits of owning investment property is the opportunity to secure a tax savings by reducing the amount of tax paid on income from rent, as well as from other sources of income such as wages from employment, through allowance for the depreciation of the property. This is a paper write-off because generally real properties grow in value, even though for tax purposes they can be treated as a physical asset declining in value. Loan Paydown. Burning the mortgage implies a paid-off loan. On the way to the bonfire, every payment of principal on an outstanding loan builds more equity for the future. In a fully amortizing loan, principal as well as interest is paid with each installment. As the amount owed declines, equity grows.

Appreciation. Our good fortune comes from living in Southern California. With each passing day, the laws of supply and demand drive the value of real estate up. Over the last four decades, the average increase in the value of homes in Los Angeles County was 10 percent per year. For example, a $1-million home purchased with a $100,000 down payment that increases by the average of 10 percent essentially grows by the equivalent of $100,000 or 100 percent of your initial capital investment in one year! Home is where the heart is Actors Jane Kaczmarek and Bradley Whitford host fund-raisers at their San Marino home as an entertaining way to give back. BY JULIE RIGGOTT ~ PHOTOS BY CHRISTOPHER RAINONE

HEN JANE KACZMAREK AND BRADLEY WHITFORD ATTENDED AN INTIMATE dinner party hosted by Don and Mary Thomas, fellow congregants at All Saints Church in Pasadena, they heard about the couple’s annual travels to Malawi as part of their volunteer work with Global AIDS Interfaith Alliance. The charity’s founder, William Rankin, also shared his experiences helping people in one of the poorest nations in the world. “They told a story that just haunted me about people starving in Malawi,” Kaczmarek recalled. “These women would dive into this water, where water lilies were blooming. These ponds would be filled with crocodiles, and these women were so hungry that they would dive down and swim in these dangerous waters to get these water lily bulbs, which were highly nutritious but very poisonous. They would eat these things — although it would make them very sick — to get any nutrition at all.” Moved by that image, in such contrast with our own lives, and impressed with Rankin and the Thomases’ devotion to improving the lives of people halfway across the world, Kaczmarek and Whitford felt a “huge responsibility to participate.” So the successful television actors joined forces with GAIA to host a special fund-raiser, “Village by Village: A Garden Party for GAIA,” on April 21 at their San Marino home. Founded in 2000 by Rankin, a former associate rector of All Saints Church, GAIA works with religious groups to provide HIV education, testing and care in —Continued on page 60 Malawi, where about 14 percent of the adult population is

infected with HIV/AIDS, and about 550,000 children have been orphaned by the disease (according to UNAIDS). Thanks to GAIA, thousands have been tested and educated about prevention; thousands of orphaned children have received food, clothing and schooling; and hundreds of women have been trained as caretakers and nurses. The charity works “village by village” by supporting five women in each locale who oversee education, testing and healthcare as well as the creation of income-generating projects, like beekeeping, to put people on the road to self-sustainability. When $15,000 assists an entire village for one year, and $21 feeds and clothes an orphan for a whole year, the funds from April’s benefit will work miracles: Sponsorship starts at $500 for two tickets and goes as high as $30,000 for 10 tickets and a reception with the celebrity hosts. Kaczmarek and Whitford’s beautiful 1920s Mediterranean-style house and gardens will be the ideal location for entertaining the anticipated 250 guests. Its suitability for fund-raising affairs was one reason they bought it two years ago when they moved to the San Gabriel Valley from Los Feliz. French doors in the living room, perfect for the flow of guests indoors and out, open to a patio, an immense lawn and boxwood gardens. “The house was designed with entertaining in mind,” Kaczmarek said. “The two fellows who lived here — Tom Schumacher and Matthew White were their names — were very, very generous hosts in this area, and they entertained a lot.” Kaczmarek and Whitford hosted an event for the Union of Concerned Scientists before they had even moved in. This past November, their home became an intimate stage for the Pasadena Conservatory of Music’s Mansions & Music series. Since Kaczmarek is a big fan of classical music, they are also planning to host a Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra event this fall. Whitford, who won an Emmy for his role on “The West Wing,” is now putting in long days on the set of “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.” Kaczmarek, who earned seven Emmy nominations, one for each year she worked on “Malcolm in the Middle,” recently found out that her latest show, “Help Me Help You,” was canceled. But she doesn’t mind the time off. “I really enjoy being a mom and taking part in this community,” she said, expressing excitement about the families, lifestyle, arts and science that attracted them to the area. While spending more time with their three kids and taking music theory and art classes in Pasadena, Kaczmarek has more time for philanthropic interests too. She stays busy with the nonprofit organization she and Whitford started about five years ago, Clothes Off Our Backs, which supports children’s charities by auctioning off celebrity gowns worn on the red carpet (see Shopping, page 53). Kaczmarek is also active with the Children’s Defense Fund, calling Marian Wright Edelman, the charity’s founder and president, her mentor. “She has a wonderful book called ‘The Measure of Our Success,’ where she says that service is the rent we pay for living, that the higher your intellectual and financial gifts, the higher your rent. And this has had a really profound impact on me,” Kaczmarek said. “You know, Brad and I got very lucky in show business, and we have healthy children, and I’ve always felt that we had a very high rent to pay back.” AM “Village by Village: A Garden Party for GAIA” was sold out at press time. For more information about GAIA or to learn how you can help, contact its Southern California Development Director Karen Hayes at (626) 398-4128 or karen@thegaia.org, or visit www.thegaia.org.
