There is a fabulous array of adventures available to children of all ages in local camps this summer, offering something for everyone; the adventurous, tech-savvy, intellectual, artistic, and special needs kids, with camps and facilities providing ability-appropriate services for those with physical or emotional challenges.

Woodbury Road, #F, Altadena (626) 794-1156 info@tomsawyercamps.com tomsawyercamps.com Tucked into Hahamongna Watershed Park above Devil’s Gate Dam in the Arroyo Seco in 1944, Tom Sawyer camp has been family favorite for outdoor summer fun for generations and offers five summer programs. “The quality of our staff and training is what sets us apart from other camps,” said Registrar, Operations and Program Director Kevin Austin. “Campers have the opportunity to hang out and be middle-schoolers in a safe environment. I’ve been here 16 years. I started as a youngster and came back as a director and I wouldn’t have it any other way.” Their newest, Camp Lacy was formed with residents of San Marino in mind. Camp Lacy offers flexible enrollment and campers will enjoy swimming, weekly field trips and other outdoor activities. Pre Camp (3- to 5-year-olds) offers the consistent scheduling so crucial for younger children. Activities include swimming lessons and free-play, horseback riding, nature and craft programs. Co-ed campers are peer-grouped, with three counselors for every 12 campers. TSC Too offers camp adventures for slightly older children that include swimming lessons, horseback riding, archery and nature activities. The Day Camp program for students first through sixth grade is similar to the TSC Too program. Outpost (sixth through ninth grade) programs include natural rock-climbing, wind-surfing, kayaking and beach trips. For Special Needs children, Tom Sawyer’s sister camp BLAST (Building Lasting Success Together) specializes in assisting special-needs campers with socialization. Young fans of technology will enjoy the JPL Outer Space Camp, (June 16 -20 for ages 6-11.) With instruction from JPL specialists, participants will learn about the intricacies of space exploration and even compete in the “Outer Space Olympics.” Hands-on activities include creating a “universe in a jar” and crafting olive oil constellations. June 23-27, Kidspace hosts the Inventors Camp (7-11 years old) in which children will learn about the great inventors in history and how their contributions

changed the course of it, as well as have an opportunity to craft inventions of their own. June 30-July 3 is Culture Camp. Visitors will explore myriad cultural traditions, among them foods, garments, art, games, music and dance through a hands-on learning experience. Homeowners around the Rose Bowl have may be opposed to having the NFL use the stadium as a temporary site for a pro football team, fearing that the noise and traffic flow will disrupt their pristine environs. But they’ll still be have to deal with one crazy week at the beginning of August, as four of the biggest stars in rap and pop music will take Pasadena by storm over the course of three shows. First, husband-wife superstars Jay-Z and Beyonce team up for an Aug. 2 stop on their “On the Run” tour, offering a double dose of pop royalty to what should be a sold-out audience of more than 90,000 fans. Whether Jay is rapping through “99 Problems” and “New York State of Mind,” or Beyonce is pumping the crowd up with “Crazy in Love” or turning them on with the sultry tracks from her latest CD, it should be a memorable night. Yet they’ll be challenged for best show of the summer twice during the week after their performance, with Eminem and Rihanna bringing their “Monster” tour to Jay-Z and Beyonce the Rose Bowl for two shows on Aug. 7 and 8. The fi rst show is already sold out, proving that the dynamic duo who share the mike on hits like “Monster” and “Love the Way You Lie” in addition to having dozens of hit songs individually also know how to pack a stadium. Those whose tastes run a bit more toward standards and classical sounds should have no fear. The usual battle for the high-end music fan is being waged once again by the triumvirate of orchestras that Pasadena is blessed to have year-round. The California Philharmonic (CalPhil) brings another season of musical magic to Santa Anita Park, where their five-show Festival on the Green series kicks off on June 28 with “John Williams & Friends,” featuring music from “Star Wars,” “E.T,” “Schindler’s List,” “Jurassic Park” and more in addition to the “1812 Overture,” “Carmina Burana” and Brahms’ Double Concerto. That blockbuster evening will be followed by “Cowboys & Copland” on July 12, “Magic, Fantasy & Adventure” (featuring the CalPhil Chorale) on July 26, “Movie Masterpieces” on Aug. 9 and closing out with “Broadway & Bolero” on Aug. 23. Eminem and Rihanna Meanwhile, the Pasadena Symphony and POPS revs up its own summer fun at the LA County Arboretum and Botanic Gardens under the leadership of Michael Feinstein, beginning with the June 7 performance of “Feinstein’s Favorites.” Featuring music by Harry Warren, Richard Rodgers, Nelson Riddle, Henry Mancini, Alfred Newman and a world premiere by Andre and George Previn, with Broadway sensations Laura Osnes and Norm Lewis as guest vocalists singing classics from Peggy Lee and Judy Garland, the night will mark a groovy good start to the season. Following that, Tena Clark’s Leading Ladies of Song will team up on June 28, with a trio of singers led by the legendary Dionne Warwick performing tunes by composer Clark under the guidance of conductor Larry Blank. On July 19, the orchestra will shake things up a bit as Feinstein puts down the baton and picks up a microphone for the tribute show “Michael Feinstein SINGS Gershwin!” featuring some of the best standards in the Great American Songbook, including “Someone to Watch Over Me” and “Nice Work if You Can Get It.” The fun continues on Aug. 16, when the POPS will present continued on page 19

But area music aficionados know that there’s one other great option available for inventive summer entertainment: MUSE/IQUE. Headed by former POPS conductor Rachael Worby, the ensemble blends a classical base with other musical genres to create unique experiences, and that should be no different this year. Their season kicks off July 5 with “Glass/Shattered,” an Ella Fitzgerald-themed concert featuring guest singer Nnenna Freelon. Although Renee Bodie is pleased when people say they enjoy the concerts at Levitt Pavilion in Memorial Park, she often tells them the music is “just the tip of the iceberg.” “Our basic pursuit is community through music,” says Bodie, executive director of Levitt Pavilion — Greater Los Angeles & Pasadena. “We also want to celebrate diversity and bring cultures together on our lawn, and engage and activate youth through our intern and volunteer programs. We really want to reach into the community.” The nonprofit group schedules 100 free concerts each summer — 50 in Pasadena’s Memorial Park and 50 at the Levitt Pavilion at MacArthur Park in Los Angeles. The organization’s parent company, the Mortimer Levitt Foundation, provides funding to build concert venues in underused urban areas throughout the country with the goal of revitalizing these places and making them continued on page 30 SUMMER GUIDE 2014 PASADENA WEEKLY

centers of community activity. Memorial Park, says Bodie, was “very underused” before 2002, when the foundation provided funding to restore its historic gold band shell. The venue had not been used since the 1970s and “families were staying away from there.” The fi rst concerts at the renovated facility were staged in 2003. The annual summer concert series has since expanded its attendance, attracting patrons from the San Gabriel Valley, Los Angeles and surrounding areas. Bodie says the events also spurred economic development, because many concertgoers eat dinner or shop in Pasadena before the shows. Last year, a record number of 70,000 people attended the series. The 2014 series kicks off on Father’s Day, June 15, with a return performance by blues singer Barbara Morrison and her big band. Between then and the fi nal performance on Saturday, Aug. 23, Levitt Pavilion will feature Children’s Nights every Wednesday, jazz on Sundays and a variety of musical styles — from Americana to Latin, along with rock, popular ’50’s oldies, klezmer and world music — on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. songwriter Karla Bonoff; Richard Thompson, a highly regarded British guitarist and songwriter; musicians Playing for Change; and 1950s recording stars Johnny Tillotson, whose hits include “Poetry in Motion” and “Heartaches by the Number,” and the Four Preps. From its office in South Pasadena, Bodie’s organization also puts together summer concerts at MacArthur Park, which opened its own Levitt Pavilion in 2007. Shows at both pavilions, she explains, are pretty much the same, except the MacArthur Park venue presents fewer jazz shows and more Latino and world music than the Pasadena stage. MacArthur Park is also the site of a series of summer concerts sponsored by the Grammy Museum in downtown Los Angeles. The pavilions in both Memorial and MacArthur parks initially were operated by their own nonprofit companies, but the two merged in 2013. That year, Bodie was hired as executive director. Before taking the job she was president of Bodie House Music Inc. for almost 15 years, producing concerts, festivals and music conferences throughout the United States. She also served on the board of Folk Alliance International for 10 years and was board president for two of those years. The alliance seeks to increase public awareness and appreciation of international folk music. The Memorial Park concert series has introduced some new policies since Bodie took over. The side stage of the Levitt Pavilion is now open before each show and is used for performances by community-based musicians, dancers and other artists. Bodie also added Tillotson and the Four Preps to this year’s series after a local resident told her the concerts did not include programming for seniors. She cites this decision as an example of her organization’s ability to “tap into” community needs. “The biggest thing is listening to the community and what the community wants,” she says. To that end, her organization offers two summer internships — one for the Pasadena area and another for McArthur Park. “The interns come for the entire summer and they set up our sites, help with stage management … collect lawn donations — all the parts of music and event production. By the time they come out, they know how to put on an event,” she says. Many of these tasks are also performed by a group of community-based volunteers. In addition, the Friends of Levitt Pavilion, the organization’s board of directors, has established community partnerships with local agencies, including the city of Pasadena, the Pasadena Department of Water and Power, the Pasadena Arts Council, the Pasadena Association Memorial Hospital, the Pasadena Public Library and the Pasadena Humane Society. “Music is just the tip of the iceberg,” says Bodie. “We are an arts organization, not just someone who comes in and just presents 50 concerts. We are a promoter of the arts and a promoter of the community through the arts. “It’s not just presenting concerts. It’s so much more than that,” Bodie says. ■ 34

Pathways to Employment SUMMER WORK PROGRAMS PROVIDE MEANINGFUL JOBS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE BY REBECCA KUZINS

It used to be easy for a high school student to find a summer job at McDonald’s or someplace offering entry-level positions and low wages. But the employment outlook became a lot bleaker after the Great Recession of 2008, when students suddenly found themselves competing with many experienced workers who had lost their jobs. “The jobs that were typically available for the young people were being taken by seasoned workers,” said Kardia Pinckney, co-founder of the Ideal Youth, a Pasadena-based youth workforce development program. “So now there’s not as many opportunities for students who may truly want to work, who may need to work. … They now have to compete with people who are their parents’ age, their grandparents’ age.” Instead of job-hunting on their own, local youth generally have an easier time fi nding summer work through the area’s job

placement programs. The programs operated by the Foothill Workforce Investment Board (FWIB), the city of Pasadena, the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) and Ideal Youth not only try to fi nd summer jobs that match students’ interests and career aspirations; they also teach students the “soft skills” needed to survive in an increasingly competitive workforce. This work-based learning usually includes advice on preparing a resume, conducting a job interview, getting to work on time, dressing for success, interacting with co-workers and supervisors, providing good customer service, and retaining a job. FWIB’s Foothill Youth Self-Sufficiency Program helps young people between the ages of 14 and 21 fi nd work during the summer and school year. Youth Program Coordinator Sarah Toni Mendoza-Jaime said the program received a grant from Los Angeles County that will create 200 jobs this summer for lowcontinued on page 38 SUMMER GUIDE 2014 PASADENA WEEKLY

income and foster youth who are 18 or older. “We really encourage the youth to stay in school,” explained Dianne Russell, an FWIB operations manager who works with Mendoza-Jaime. “When they work during the summer, they begin to understand what work is all about.” However, she added, “When they go to work, the work takes over and school suffers. Foothill’s stance is [for young people] to use work-based learning to use the work opportunities and to learn that the more advanced education you can get, the more opportunities you will have in the world of work.” Over the years, FWIB has placed students in public-sector positions for the cities of Pasadena, Monrovia and Duarte; Los Angeles County agencies; and the California Highway Patrol, among others. Some private employers — including Party City, the Altadena Country Club and Fresh & Easy grocery stores — have also offered positions. FWIB is trying to persuade privatesector employers to create more jobs for young people. The city of Pasadena’s Human Services and Recreation Department is also seeking more private-sector summer jobs for its long-standing Summer ROSE (Rewarding Opportunities in Summer Employment) Program. ROSE is fi nanced by the city and has traditionally offered jobs in city agencies and other government positions. Department Director Mercy Santoro said

Leadership Pasadena Youth Employment Support, a group of professionals that works to improve the community, has developed and initiated a marketing campaign to “to locate 15 placement opportunities for young people with the business sector.” These opportunities, she added, will hopefully lead to a “scaleup” in private-sector positions “that would not only positively impact the business community but really enrich the lives of our young people by delivering a real career pathway to them.” ROSE, which for many years accepted students between the ages of 16 and 21, has now returned to its original policy of serving youth between the ages of 14 and 24. The program also increased student workers’ salaries from $8 to $9 an hour. In addition to the age requirements, program participants must reside in Pasadena and meet the US Department of Housing and Labor Development (HUD) low-income guidelines. The deadline to apply for ROSE was April 10. ROSE will employ about 160 young people from July 1 through Aug. 15. Participants must complete up to 140 hours in their paid work assignments and receive weekly soft-skills training. Both the city and PUSD this summer will take part in a government-funded program that was introduced last year. The Careers to Conservation Program will enable 30 students in the Engineering and Environmental Science Pathway at John Muir continued on page 40

High School to work in environment-related occupations. Ten students will work as camp directors or naturalists; 10 others will be employed in various aspects of outdoor work, such as harvesting native plants and trial design; and 10 more will work at US forests and national parks. Careers to Conservation is funded by the city of Pasadena, Los Angeles County and the US Forest Service. According to Marisa Sarian, PUSD’s director of college and career pathways, the school district is also attempting to place 11thgraders in summer internships related to the pathways in which they are enrolled. Eligible students must be available for summer work and have a grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher. Some district students, she added, will fi nd work or internships through Summer ROSE or Ideal Youth. In addition, PUSD this summer is seeking to place about 50 students who have already received work-readiness training in positions at Caltech, JPL, the Levitt Pavilion concert series and other Pasadena-area workplaces. Ideal Youth’s summer internship was created in 2009 to help prepare young people for the world of work. “There were youth programs in existence before then,” said co-founder Ishmael Trone. “They taught students how to build a resume, how to dress for success. And at the end of the training they received a pizza party and a certificate and that was the end of the experience.” Trone, a tax accountant and a former City Council candidate, and Pinckney, a fi nancial adviser, sought to establish what Trone described as “an advanced internship program where the students receive technical training and upon completion a guaranteed internship position in a career field that they are interested in.” Ideal Youth provides paid and unpaid internships to students between the ages of 16 to 20 who are high school juniors and seniors and college freshmen with GPAs of 2.0 or higher. Students are placed in positions that match their interests, which 40

in the past included working for attorneys, veterinarians, sports medicine providers, public relations directors, and local arts organizations, among others. In its fi rst year, only nine students were placed in internships; this summer, 100 students will participate in the program. Like the other summer job programs, Ideal Youth is seeking to make more opportunities available in private-sector positions. To attain this goal, in 2012 Ideal Youth entered into a partnership with the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce, in which the chamber agreed to actively encourage the business community to create summer jobs for young people. Some students who have completed Ideal Youth’s summer program are now working for Rose City Java, a company cofounded by Ideal Youth and Pete Galanis, owner of Cameron’s Seafood Restaurant & Bar in Pasadena. The company has a subcontract with the Rose Bowl to sell Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf products during UCLA football games and other arena events. Because of Ideal Youth’s programs, Trone said, students “know they’re going to get trained, they know they’re going to get the internships experience, and they know they are going to have a permanent paid job. This will increase graduation rates, this will increase attendance in high school.
