stirring youthful memory for me was the last hour of my month at a sleep-away music and arts camp in Idyllwild. By program’s end, I’d met young people from almost every corner of our country and gained an infi nite amount of wisdom and understanding of how fortunate I was to have such an experience — and I didn’t want it to end. One of my bunkmates ran up to me to say goodbye just before she and her family prepared to fly back to Minnesota. She embraced me with a quick but heartfelt “have a good life.” It was understood that we’d likely never cross paths again, but I was so touched by her words and the import of all I had learned and seen over the past four weeks. For me, it was a wonderful way to send off an acquaintance you’ve become fond of but one you are destined to lose touch with, and I never forgot it. Thirty-plus years later, I can recall with such clarity how special those friendships made me feel at the time and what I learned about myself in my interactions with others from other parts of the nation, and the world. The American Camp Association (ACA) website (acacamps. org) explains camping’s connection to our psyche and development thusly; “… children and adults have the opportunity to learn powerful lessons in community, character-building, skill development, and healthy living — lessons that can be learned nowhere else.” The ACA estimates that there are more than 7,000 overnight camps dotting the American landscape, and about 5,000 day camps. They accredit over 2,400 camps and use a strict standard, with the members being forced to meet more than 300 safety, health and program quality requirements. Specialized camps can be loosely grouped into three categories: Art, Sports, Academic. The general camp offers a well-rounded

camp experience with no particular area of focus. Rather, it provides campers with a variety of activities, including sports, crafts, music and the arts. It is often seen as the best bet for the novice camper, or the camper interested in an eclectic mix of activities. This useful guide is but a small offering of the amazing summer camps in Pasadena and its surrounding neighborhoods, but it’s no substitute for thorough research of each program and thoughtful consideration of your child’s likes, dislikes and needs. Parents will be delighted to fi nd that child care and camp options exist to feed the needs of most families, including special-needs facilities and camps that focus on corrective behavior, the underprivileged and the underserved. Cost, of course, is another important factor, but be aware that many quality camps offer programs on a sliding-scale basis, or scholarships, grants or other types of fi nancial assistance. Fees are sometimes based on certain segments of the summer program, which are generally broken up into 6-week or 2-month-long segments, and you may find that the late-summer segment is cheaper or less-crowded than the program at the start of summer. Some camp programs offer special trips or events in some segments, such as mid-summer, but not others, so ask plenty of questions about field-trips and special programs and any extra fees associated. Keep in mind, many of these camp extras are offered at an additional cost that is separate from the regular fees paid. Check with the individual camp for availability as soon as you identify a program for your child. Space fills up quickly for the most popular and for the most affordable summer programs. Often there is a waiting list you can request to be placed on, but be sure to have a Plan B and C in place, just in case. continued on page 8

Starting this June, the Project Scientist Academy kicks off its first five-week summer camp series, which promises something for every STEM-minded girl in Pasadena between the ages of 4 and 14. Each week of camp will feature a new theme, and girls can learn about everything from zoology, oceanography and archeology to locomotion and coding. Started in North Carolina during summer 2011, Project Scientist’s founder, Sandy Marshall, created the program to fulfill a need. “I had a 4-year-old daughter who was crazy about STEM, but we could not find a summer program that was full time for working parents and academic enough to fit my daughter’s needs,” Marshall explained. Then working as the executive director and founder of the NASCAR Foundation, Marshall researched and learned of the disadvantages girls and women face in STEM majors and careers. So, instead of simply complain, she took action and started her own program based on the curriculum of PBS’ popular STEM show, “SciGirls.” Now in its fi fth year, Project Scientist annually partners with Harvard and the University of North Carolina Charlotte to research the program’s impact. And the results are consistently positive. Until now, the program has only been offered in Charlotte. Marshall said the reason to expand to Pasadena was multifaceted, including the Pasadena school system’s size and demographics. “The diversity of the community around race and income is at the heart of Project Scientist,” Marshall said. “We appreciate the smaller size of the PUSD allowing us to gain traction more quickly and make a deeper impact for girls in STEM in Pasadena.” Project Scientist is a fee-based program. However, it offers scholarships to girls who may not be able to afford the program but have a passion and aptitude for STEM. Longfellow Elementary School Principal Erica Ingber said scholarships are limited this year, but that should not deter any student from applying to the program. continued on page 16 SUMMER GUIDE 2015 PASADENA WEEKLY

“Right now we are trying to secure funding for 10 full scholarships,” Ingber said. “We are hoping for at least 50 girls in the program this summer, and of those 10 will be scholarships.” Caltech is hosting five weeks of the program on the university’s campus and is calling it Project Scientist Scholars (girls ages 11 to 14). Spiros Michalakis, research scientist and manager of Caltech’s outreach activities at the Institute for Quantum Information and Matter, said this level of support is unprecedented for the university. “We don’t usually commit this level of support for an outreach program unless it is run by Caltech students,” Michalakis said. “This is an exception due to the quality and vision behind Project Scientist. “ Michalakis had a chance to visit the North Carolina program in August and to teach students ages 12 to 14 some quantum physics. He said the girls loved it, and so did he. Since then, he has had regular meetings to establish a partnership with Longfellow Elementary, where the younger students will be hosted during the summer. Michalakis’ hope for more scholarships for students in this program is strong. “The first step is to establish strong corporate partners locally so we can increase the number of full-ride scholarships for girls on the PUSD and the LAUSD free or reduced price lunch program,” he said. He also wants to be involved with Caltech faculty and students as mentors for the five-week summer program and hopes to eventually create year-round Project Scientist clubs in schools like Longfellow Elementary, Jefferson Elementary, the Washington STEAM Academy and others. Ingber, who said her 7-year-old daughter is excited to learn about dinosaurs at camp this year, is hopeful for the partnership and program. “We don’t have things that are just for girls,” Ingber said. “I think it’s an awesome opportunity and I am really excited to have girls participate.” ■ For more information about Project Scientist, this year’s camp schedule, locations, scholarships and more, visit http://projectscientist.org/project-scientist-academy-2015. Summer of Sound PASADENA AND ALTADENA OFFER PLENTY OF MUSICAL AND ECLECTIC EVENTS TO CHOOSE FROM THIS SUMMER BY CARL KOZLOWSKI

Last summer, homeowners near the Rose Bowl had to contend with what they feared would be a wild week of concerts when the famed stadium played host to two Eminem and Rihanna concerts and one from the married superstar team of Jay-Z and Beyonce. Those shows wound up being relatively peaceful affairs, with the Jay-Z show only featuring one major arrest that resulted from one fan biting off the finger tip of another concertgoer, and the 110,000 attendees of the two Eminem/Rihanna concerts resulting in about 25 arrests within the stadium for public intoxication and five ticket scalpers outside. This summer, the vibe in the Arroyo should be decidedly different, as the only major summer concert at the venue is a double-superstar bill of country singers Jason Aldean and Kenny Chesney. The crooning cowboys will team up on Saturday, July 25, along with opening act Brantley Gilbert for a night that should bring more twanging than beat-banging to the night skies. Aside from that musical spectacular, the Pasadena area will play host to all sorts of other fun this summer. As always, there are plenty of opportunities for musical magic in beautiful locations afforded by the three world-class orchestral ensembles in the area. First off, the biggest music event of them all in terms of the number of artists performing is Make Music Pasadena, which will bring together seven stages and 25 venues across the city on June 6. With a staggering 150 musical acts taking the stage over 12 hours from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., all for a suggested donation of $5, it’s impossible for any music fan to go home unhappy. The California Philharmonic, aka CalPhil, brings its annual summer concert season back to Santa Anita Park for another round of Saturday night fun, kicking off with “The Beatles & Beethoven” on June 27. This year, the frequent fan favorite show will feature special guests Beatlemania as the tribute band. They and the orchestra show how Beethoven’s 7th Symphony pairs perfectly with the Beatles’ “Penny Lane,” “Sgt. Pepper,” “Hey Jude” and more.

On July 11, CalPhil will present “Rodgers & Hammerstein & More,” followed by their Broadway-focused “Phantom/Les Miz” concert on July 25, the movie-centric “Lights, Camera, Action!” on Aug. 8, and the season finale of “Postcards from Abroad” on Aug. 22. All shows are held at 7:30 p.m. Saturdays at Santa Anita and then 2 p.m. Sundays at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles. Meanwhile, the Pasadena Symphony and POPS kicks off its POPS Summer Series of concerts with “Big Band Swing” on June 20, as they celebrate the music of the ’30s and ’40s with guest soloists Michael Andrew and Marilyn Maye singing songs like “Moonglow” and “Minnie the Moocher” amid the lush lawns of the LA County Arboretum and Botanical Garden in Arcadia. The rest of the season is rounded out by their own Beatles tribute night “Classical Mystery Tour” on July 11, Musical Director Michael Feinstein singing for a night on “The Sinatra Project” on Aug. 1, and the finale of “To Ella & Nat With Love” on Aug. 22. Leave it to MUSE/IQUE to put a fresh spin on the summer classical season, as founder and Musical Director Rachael Worby leads a three-night tribute to “the creative gravity” of Leonard Bernstein with the series “Planet/Bernstein” held on Caltech’s Beckman Mall Lawn. The first night is July 11 and called “Cosmic/ Collaboration,” honoring the great composer’s influence on Aaron Copland, John Williams, Jerome Robbins and even John Lennon. Meanwhile, MUSE/IQUE’s “Jazz/Genesis” show on Aug. 8 brings in the highly acclaimed jazz vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater for a jam that explores the secrets behind songs like “Big Stuff” by Bernstein and the works of other composers, like Sondheim, Gershwin and Porter. The night is brought to greater heights by the ensemble performing Bernstein’s only film score, from the Oscar-winning classic “On the Waterfront.” The MUSE/IQUE season ends on Aug. 29 with the third part of the Bernstein tribute, “Inside/Story,” as the ensemble reimagines the classic tale of “West Side Story” for the streets of today, with fresh continued on page 22 SUMMER GUIDE 2015 PASADENA WEEKLY

Just minutes away in Glendale, the 22nd Annual Glendale Cruise Night will bring hundreds of classic-car owners to a several-block stretch of Brand Boulevard to show off their favorite rides while terrific rock acts perform fun concerts during the festivities from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 18. The free, all-ages event will feature Jumping Jack Flash — Tribute to the Stones, Smooth Sounds of Santana, and The Chantays, plus a fireworks spectacular to close it all out near the main stage at Brand Boulevard and Milford Street. Up in Altadena, the Sheriff’s Support Group of Altadena will sponsor its 19th Annual Free Summer Concerts series in the amphitheater in Farnsworth Park at 7 p.m. Saturdays. On July 11, Altadena’s big band Downbeat Express kicks things off with a night of patriotic music. On July 18 the Brian Hughes Band brings a night of jazz, while the Manning Brothers & Friends bring Irish music and dance to the stage on July 25, and the Mighty Burnt Bacon delivers classic Stax-style soul music on Aug. 1. On Aug. 8, Upstream performs steel drum, soca and calypso music, while the piano rock tribute band The Kings of 88 will rock the house on Aug. 15 and Whiskey Hayride saddles up and plays country music on Aug. 22. The Aug. 29 concert will feature Floyd & The Flyboys performing R&B, soul and funk, while the season concludes with a grand finale tribute to the Beatles on Sept. 12 featuring the tribute act Sgt. Pepper. And let’s not forget the most frequent series of music shows in Pasadena, the annual series of more than 50 free concerts performed Wednesdays through Sundays throughout the summer at Levitt Pavilion in Memorial Park. But concerts aren’t the only way that the Pasadena area comes to life in the summer. ven though he grew up in small-town Alabama, Everette Hoard always felt the magical allure of the Queen Mary and knew that he wanted to spend his life working on it. Hoard’s father had told him stories about the fabled ship since he was a young child, and he grew up to actually fulfill his dream after moving in 1981 to Long Beach, where the classic ship had been permanently docked, ever since the city won an international bidding war by paying more than $4 million for the titanic vessel in 1969. Long Beach leaders knew that the ship would prove to be a perpetual draw for tourists, and their instincts paid off. Over the

past 34 years, the 54-year-old Hoard has become emblematic of why spending a day — or better yet, a full day and night in a suite of the Queen Mary Hotel, whose prices run from $109 to $495, depending on which weeknight and the size of the room — is one of the most unique getaways the Los Angeles area has to offer. Hoard believes that the Queen Mary’s “magic” dates back to its construction, when it was designed to be the largest passenger ship in the world. “The soul of a ship is the people that built, operated, and continue to serve her,” says Hoard, who has risen through the ranks from working retail on the ship to become the most honored spokesman and tour guide, with the official status of Commodore. “However, the Mary has this compelling allure that is some inexplicable but almost tangible magic. To me she is a living thing even now,” he says. That sense of the ship being alive is a big part of its allure for visitors, who largely come from two categories of people: history buffs and fans of ghosts and other paranormal activity. Having been used as both a troop-transport ship amid the dangerous waters of World War II as well as a luxury transoceanic ship for decades, stories abound of spectral sightings. But rather than denying them for fear of scaring off customers, the Queen Mary happily uses them as a selling point. In fact, the Queen Mary offers four different ways to enjoy some scares, with the Twilight Historical Tour offering an opportunity to explore the ship at night in an evening version of its popular tour, the Glory Days Historical Tour ($16 for adults, $12 for kids under 12). Led by a sardonically funny guide with giant, bugged-out eyes, this tour uses special effects to create the impression of ghosts and also has some other trick surprises that give the feel of the fake natural disasters found on the Universal Studios Tour. It’s defi nitely the way to go with kids, and the overall Passport costs $31 online for adults and $20 online for kids under 11. All tickets cost an additional $3 at the ship’s box office. The three night-time tours offer an array of options, with the Paranormal Ship Walk taking place from 9 p.m. nightly for $39. Along with stops along hallways, a glamorous ballroom and a particularly terrifying bedroom that’s no longer rented to guests, this large-group tour takes visitors through the extremely spooky and long-unused fi rst-class swimming pool, where guests frequently report both hearing a little girl calling out in the darkness and seeing a mix of shadows and orbs. The video that my guest took of the tour was fi lled with frequent disturbing lights, so something is defi nitely happening on the ship. If you want to combine class with the sass of the often-humorous tour guides, enjoy the Dining with the Spirits tour, which is available at 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and offers participants the chance to eat in the ship’s classiest restaurant, Sir Winston’s Restaurant and Lounge, before taking the two-hour Paranormal Ship Walk. Welcome to the Eleventh season of the, SCSF. This year SCSF will present William Shakespeare’s Macbeth directed by guest director David Fox. We hope you will continue to support SCSF as you have done throughout our last ten seasons of producing sold-out Shakespeare for the Pomona community and the Inland Empire. The Southern California Shakespeare Festival, SCSF, is a professional AEA, Actors’ Equity Association company, in residence at Cal Poly Pomona, with guest AEA actors, student actors and designers from Cal Poly Pomona’s Department of Theatre and New Dance. SCSF operates under the Los Angeles Actor’s Equity Association 99 seat plan. Our Eleventh season runs Saturday nights with a 8:00 p.m. curtain and Sundays with a 2:00 p.m. matinee. There’s sunscreen in the side pocket. Plenty of shorts and T’s to last you the whole vacation. Flip-flops and sturdy hikers, plenty of socks and at least one swimsuit for the most important part of your day. But you’re missing one thing, aren’t you? You’ll need a book for this summer’s vacation, so why not try one (or two, or five) of these?

COMING OUT IN MAY Your summer vacation might actually be during the summer — which, technically, May isn’t — but there are some books just too good to miss. Take, for instance, “The Wright Brothers” by historian David McCullough, a great book, if you’re flying to your destination. I’m looking forward to “When to Rob a Bank” by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner; they’re the “Freakonomics” guys, remember? Melissa Rivers has a new book out about her Mom, Joan, and there’s a new biography being released about the life of Ronald Reagan. Bruce Cameron. There are a couple good parenting books out this month, just in time to send the kids back to school. You’ll also fi nd some books on what it means and what it takes to be human. Al Roker has a fascinating book due out, about weather and storms. Look for “Smokejumper” from Jason Ramos and Julius Smith (about an airborne fi refighter), a book about Hurricane Katrina from Gary Rivlin, and a few good cookbooks for planning those last-days-of-summer parties. Now the housekeeping: Titles change. Authors change. Release dates definitely change, so if you’re desperate for the latest from your fave author, feel free to throw yourself at the mercy of those wonderful people at the bookstore or library. Area merchants are pulling out all the stops with exciting new fashions and creative updates on existing designs. Eyepopping colorful sundress patterns in vivid hues are among the new trends in textiles as we slide into summer’s warm, welcoming embrace. It seems designers have fi nally come to understand and appreciate what most American shoppers have known all along: Women come in many shapes and sizes, so it’s simply smart business to provide attractive, trendy designs in many sizes that are reflective of that fact. The recent popularity of the maxi-dress has inspired designers and retailers to offer innovative renditions of several summer favorites. As a result, shoppers will fi nd better availability, more style choices and a wider range of sizes for most of their summer shopping needs. And then there’s the sundress — the maxidress, a textile staple that has been updated and reinvented, yet still retains a certain classic aura of casual loveliness. The beauty of it is that it comes in such a myriad range of styles, sizes, colors and patterns. Pair a subtly toned sundress with a cropped jacket or even a blazer and instantly you are ready for cocktails and dinner. Dressing it up with accessories, such as metallic bracelets or brightly-hued necklaces, offers even more wardrobe options. Black and white and zigzag patterned designs are also trending, with bold vertical stripes emerging as a favorite among shoppers and fashion elite alike. Some appreciate the style for its slimming silhouette, while others simply love it for its stark contrast to brightly colored patterns, and the sophisticated look it gives the wearer. For younger shoppers and those who enjoy a girlish-flair, tulle skirts — in midi and longer-length — have seen brisk sales over the last year, with retailers reporting a 34 percent increase in sales of the item since 2014 — a significant uptick.
