T
he o he ori origins rigi ri g ns of gi of camping camp ca mpin ingg ca can n be ttra traced race ced d to a ssem seminal emin inal al eevent vent that took place in 1861, in Washington, ConC nCo necticut. Frederick Gunnery and his wife Abigail G took the boys they’d been housing at their home-school on a two-week trip. The Gunnery’s and their charges hiked up to their designated spot and made camp and spent time at the idyllic location fishing, trapping and boating. The trip was a rousing success and thus marked the start of what today is considered the first known example of organized camping. Today, camping has made leaps and bounds in terms of the myriad choices available — from sports, performing-arts and computer camps to science and nature camps, language immersion, as well as camps for those with physical or mental challenges. The options are plentiful and diverse. ANDERSON ADVENTURE CAMP H2O Rose Bowl Aquatics 360 N. Thankfully, T Th han ank kfullly kf ly there’s theerre’ th e’s an a ample array of websites ready to provide information on the best trails — and ones to avoid — for both experienced hikers and those who are so clueless they’re likely to get lost or hurt on their first try. After all, you’ll want to make sure your time spent in the great outdoors is fun, not traumatic, so make sure you follow any rules posted, especially concerning trails that are closed for safety reasons. Bring plenty of sunscreen and water, comfortable shoes, and if at all possible at least one friend in case anything goes wrong. For those who want to find the best that the San Gabriel Mountains have to offer, visit hikespeak.com/los-angeles/san-gabrielmountains. Offering a mix of how to find waterfalls to the best mountain views and amazing vistas of the cities far below, the site is a great one-stop guide to a summer filled with discovery and healthy exercise. Aside from the numerous 30- to 50-foot waterfalls in the area and plenty of lush greenery, the right trails will also enable you to find intriguing ruins. For instance, the Sam Merrill Trail runs nearly six miles near Altadena. Starting at the top of Lake Avenue, the walk features a river and ruins from an old hotel, as well as remnants of the Lowe Railroad, which ran through the mountains at around the turn of the last century. The Merrill Trail is also known for some of the most panoramic views of Los Angeles. National Forest, which was the first official national forest in California. Visitors can enjoy more than 655,000 acres of virtually pristine outdoor space there, just outside of the LA city limits, with roaring rivers, the remnants of resorts from more than a century ago, and pine-filled canyons stretching all the way to the top of Mount Baldy at more than 10,000 feet. The site offers color-coded pins to point out where the trails with different difficulty levels are, and also has a handy chart breaking down the distances of the different trails next to their difficulty ratings. In addition, there are hiking write-ups by people who have actually used the trails recently. And when you realize that the forest’s portion of Highway 2 goes all the way to Palmdale, you’ll be amazed by the wealth of available options for outdoor fun. Best of all, this site provides distance, elevation gain, and difficulty ratings. The site discoversgv.com/hiking-the-san-gabriel-mountains offers a wealth of quick and handy descriptions of what numerous trails have to offer. If you want to experience numerous local plants along with views of Placerita Canyon, then take Ecology Trail. Or if you want to see a double waterfall, you can take the Rubio Canyon Trail. Meanwhile, if you are looking for a great place to camp out without taking a trip far out of town, Hoagees Camp is located along Lower Winter Creek Trail through a picturesque wooded canyon to a backcountry campground with 14 sites that are first come, first serve. Another option is hiking above Sturtevant Falls to a backcountry campground with seven sites that are also first come, first serve, at Spruce Grove Camp. It also turns out there’s more than one “Bridge to Nowhere” in America, as a hike named just that requires those who traverse it to cross several rivers in the San Gabriels to reach an out-of-place bridge with an intriguing history. Read carefully and choose wisely among your many hiking options and you’ll be making plenty of your own historic memories as well.■ 16

Impro Theatre’s considerable agility and its infectious sense of play makes you want to go back again.” – Los Angeles Times Passionate, smoldering secrets lurk beneath the surface of genteel society – and explode in a comical climax of accusation, confession and calamity. Inspired by American master playwright Tennessee Williams’ rollicking storytelling and delicious language, Impro Theatre starts with a single audience suggestion and builds improvised, full-length plays that are hilarious, yet tender as a Southern belle’s broken heart. Music City, USA PASADENA GIVES NASHVILLE A RUN FOR ITS MONEY WITH THIS SUMMER’S MANY DIVERSE SHOWS BY CARL KOZLOWSKI
S
ummer is the perfect time to enjoy a great concert, and Pasadena offers more options than just about any place in America for music fans. With three competing symphonies, the Rose Bowl offering three gigantic concerts, the long-standing local favorite Levitt Pavilion, the daylong Make Music Pasadena festival, and the hot new nightclub the Rose all bringing quality entertainment to town, the Crown City might just give Nashville a run for the title of Music City. First and foremost, music fans can rejoice that this is the first year in ages that the city’s two main competing orchestras — the California Philharmonic, CalPhil, and the Pasadena POPS — are not relying on The Beatles tribute shows to draw crowds. Instead, both ensembles are mixing things up in a big way with an array of other opportunities. First, the POPS are offering a four-show program kicking off with the theme of “First Ladies of Song” on June 18, featuring guest soloists Lynn Roberts, Cady Huffman and Madelyn Baillio singing standards like “The Man That Got Away,” “Fever” and “Over the Rainbow” under the direction of conductor Michael Feinstein. But it’s on the evening of July 9 that the POPS is offering up what could be the most fun show of the summer, when the “Music of Billy Joel” is spotlighted featuring solo pianist/singer Michael Cavanaugh, who was the star of the Broadway Joel tribute show “Movin’ Out.” Feinstein presents the “Sinatra Project Volume 2” on July 30, offering up an evening of classics from Ol’ Blue Eyes. And on Aug. 20, it’s “Cole Porter Night,” featuring soloists Catherine Russell and Nic Ziobro singing songs by the great American standards writer including “I Love Paris” and “De Lovely.” Meanwhile, CalPhil kicks off its season at Santa Anita Race Track and Walt Disney Concert Hall with the “All-American” show on June 25, featuring the orchestra, backed by a narrator and dancers, as they play classics ranging from the “New World Symphony” and “Lincoln Portrait” to “California Dreamin’’ and continued on page 22 SUMMER GUIDE 2016 PASADENA WEEKLY

“Good Vibrations” with ragtime, country, jazz and Motown in between. On July 9, “At the Movies” features music from classic films including “The Mission,” the “Adagio for Strings from ‘Platoon’,” “Titanic,” “The Lion King,” and Beethoven’s 9th Symphony featuring “Ode to Joy.” The July 23 “Classical Rock” show offers an intriguing combination of ABBA, Queen and Janis Joplin mixed with Mozart’s 29th Symphony, Brahms’ “Haydn Variations” and Grieg’s “Peer Gynt Suite,” featuring Tony-nominated singer Mary Bridget Davies and the CalPhil Rock Band. CalPhil’s summer closes out with an Aug. 6 show called “Center Stage,” featuring Broadway classics from “Porgy & Bess,” “Aida,” “Grease” and “La Traviata”, and Aug. 20 with the annual tradition of playing one of classical music’s most epic works, Horst’s “The Planets.” Under the guidance of mega-maestra Rachael Worby, MUSE/ IQUE always has interesting shows up its sleeve. Its “Summer of Sound 2016” program presents “Gershwin/Nation,” featuring three shows inspired by George and Ira Gershwin’s work together as songwriters. The “Perfect/Union” show July 16 kicks things off with a night of tributes to songwriting duos like Lennon/McCartney, Simon & Garfunkel and the Gershwins, while “American/Rhapsody” features thrilling American classical music like “Rhapsody in Blue” on Aug. 20. Finally, “Summer/Time” on Sept. Septt. 20 closes out the season with a tribute to o “Porgyy and Bess” featuring a mix of virtuoso o players, gospel choirs, tap dancers and nd special surprises. Of course, you can count on the Rose Bowl to bring you the literally biggest concerts of the year, with Beyoncé bringing her controversial “Formation World Tour” to town on May 14 and Coldplay taking on the challenge of packing the stadium for two nights Aug. 20 and 21. Good luck finding tickets to either, but startt by Beyoncé trying ticketmaster.com. continued on page 24 22

Knott’s also recently opened the remodeled Mrs. Knott’s Chicken Dinner Restaurant. One-day tickets can be purchased at the gate for $72. Six Flags Magic Mountain (sixflags.com/magicmountain) recently added the New Revolution Virtual Reality Coaster to its attractions. Riders wearing wireless headsets will be able to view a virtual world with images synchronized to the roller coaster’s movement. Gate prices for tickets range from $51.99 to $76.99, while tickets purchased online three days in advance cost $51.99. . Pasadenans sweltering in the summer heat have long sought relief at the beach. This summer local residents can travel to the ocean without encountering massive traffic jams and costly parking prices, thanks to Metro Rail. On May 20, the extended Expo Line will begin service, with the final stop at the Santa Monica Pier. It won’t be the easiest train ride; Pasadenans who begin their trip on the Gold Line to Union Station will need to transfer to the red or purple line, stopping at the 7th Street/Metro Center station to board the Expo Line. But many residents may find the lengthy train ride preferable to the bumper-tobumper traffic along Pacific Coast Highway. MUSEUMS: The Pasadena area has so many great museums that local residents often forget there are many other museums throughout Los Angeles County. Three of the county’s family-friendly museums are located in Exposition Park. The Museum of Natural History (nhm.org) is dinosaur central for the county, with more than 300 fossils and 20 complete dinosaur and sea creature skeletons displayed at Dinosaur Hall. A related exhibited about pterosaurs — prehistoric creatures that flew with their fingers when dinosaurs dominated the land — will be displayed from July 3 through October 2. Summer is also the best time to see some of the museum’s outdoor exhibits, including the Butterfly Pavilion, home to 30 native North American butterfly species and a variety of plants. General admission is $12 for adults; $9 for students and adults 62 or older; $5 for children 3 to 12; and free for children 2 or younger. Visitors to the nearby California Science Center (californiasciencecenter.org) can see Space Shuttle Endeavour and learn about the spacecraft’s scientific accomplishments and connections to Southern California. Timed reservations to see Endeavour are required on weekends, holidays and special events; visitors can buy tickets to see both Endeavour and the museum’s other exhibits or to only see the Endeavor exhibit. Some of those exhibits include Journey to Space, which recreates the challenges of living and working in space, and information about humans in space, space missions to the planets, and stars and telescopes. Exposition Park is also home to the California African American Museum (caamuseum.org). Two new exhibits are scheduled to be on display from May 11 through Sept 18: “Oh Snap! West Coast Hip Hop Photography” is a collection of photos focusing on hip hop artists who were prominent in the 1990s. “Reflections on the Self: Selections from the Permanent Collection” presents the wide range of techniques and media that artists have used to depict the human form. Admission to the museum is free. Dinosaurs are not the only prehistoric creatures showcased at a local museum; La Brea Tar Pits & Museum (tarpits.org) focuses on the mammals that lived at Rancho La Brea between 11,000 and 50,000 years ago. Since 1906 scientists have excavated more than 1 million bones from more than 230 species at the tar pits site, which can be viewed by visitors. The nearby museum provides additional information, including screenings of “Titans of the Ice Age,” a 3-D movie, and presentations of “Ice Age Encounters,” a multimedia performance. ■ 32

But this summer Pasadena booksellers and publishers plan to introduce some titles that defy the easy-reading category. One of the more serious new books is “Becoming Earth,” scheduled to be released in May by Red Hen Press, a Pasadena-based independent publisher. Essayist, poet and marine biologist Eva Saulitis recounts how two years of living with metastatic cancer led her to mediate on the nature of wildness. Saulitis says she eventually recognized that “living is not separate from dying. It is not yet time to dig a grave, but time to wander the woods, seeking a good site.” Red Hen plans to release four other books this summer: “LA Fiction Anthology” is a collection of short stories written by Southern California authors, including T.C. Boyle, Ron Carlson, Judith Freeman and Percival Everett. Lori Tobias’ novel “Wander,” set in a fictional rural community in Alaska in the 1980s, tells the story of Patrice “Pete” Nash, a young journalist who becomes friendly with another man when she spends the winter without her husband. “Six” is Julie Marie Wade’s collection of six interconnected poems that, according to the publisher’s catalog, plumb “six essential aspects of human experience that have shaped us all: art, language, desire, vocation, faith, and life-changing love.” Wade has written several other books, including “Wishbone: A Memoir in Fractures,” which won the Lambda Literary Award in Lesbian Memoir. Another poetry collection, Kathleen Driskell’s “Blue Etiquette,” was inspired by Emily Post’s 1922 edition of book “Etiquette” and focuses on the interactions between wealthy members of society and their servants. Prospect Park Books, another Pasadena-based publisher, this summer will release three new books by local authors. “This Side of Providence” is the second novel by Rachel M. Harper, an Altadena writer. Publisher Colleen Dunn Bates describes the book as a “heartbreaking yet ultimately hopeful story of a Puerto Rican immigrant family in Providence, R.I.” Restauranteur and baker Christine Moore, who owns the Little Flower Candy Co. and Lincoln eateries in Pasadena, and her pastry chef Cecilia Leung share their recipes for cookies, cakes, breads and other baked goods

in “Little Flower Baking.” In addition, Prospect Park will launch “Sayonara Slam” at Vroman’s Bookstore on May 2 at 7 p.m. The novel is the sixth in a planned series of seven mysteries written by Pasadena writer Naomi Hirahara, who grew up in Altadena. That city is the home of her fictional sleuth Mas Arai, an elderly semi-retired gardener, who in the new book solves the mysterious death of a sportswriter who drops dead during a baseball game at Dodger Stadium. Jennifer Ramos, Vroman’s promotional director, says the store’s book buyer is especially excited about two summer releases: “The Last Painting of Sara de Vos” by Dominic Smith and “The Sport of Kings” by C.E. Morgan. Smith’s novel combines the story of Sara de Vos, a 17th- century Dutch artist, with the tale of a 1950s art historian who painted a forgery of one of de Vos’ paintings. “The Sport of Kings,” Morgan’s debut novel, tells the story of thoroughbred horse owners Henry Forge and his daughter Henrietta, who team with Allmon Shaughnessy, an ambitious young black man, to breed a Triple Crown-winning filly. Numerous authors will be discussing and signing their new books at Vroman’s this summer. Journalist Sebastian Junger, best known for his book “The Perfect Storm” and his documentary films about the war in Afghanistan, will preview “Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging” at noon on June 5. Best-selling science writer Mary Roach will talk about “Grunt: The Curious Science of Humans at War” at a ticketed event to be held at All Saints Church on June 17 at 7 p.m. Among the other authors set to appear at Vroman’s are Justin Cronin, “City of Mirrors” (June 5 at 4 p.m.); Emma Straub, “Modern Lovers” (June 6 at 7p.m.); Susan Branch, “Martha’s Vineyard, Isle of Dreams,” the second book in a three-part memoir (June 8 at 6:30 p.m.); actor and chef Freddie Prinze Jr., “Back to the Kitchen” (June 11 at 3 p.m.); Janet Evanovich, “The Pursuit” (signing only, June 22 at 7 p.m.) and Don Miguel Ruiz Jr., “Mastery of Self” (July 20 at 7 p.m.). ■ 38

This summer, as in spring, expect designer collections in a variety of vibrant hues and patterns. Rompers, boy’s shorts and cropped-tops are in demand for casual wear, as are pencil skirts that can be layered or worn with structured or loose-fitting wraps and transition well into a sophisticated evening look. Bold geometric designs in blocky prints continue to trend, along with dresses and tops in asymmetrical cuts. Cultivating a relationship with sales staff at favorite shops to stay abreast of new arrivals and upcoming clearances is always a smart idea, since many in-demand items can be found for a fraction of the price when purchased on specific sale days. These items go quickly, however, so be prepared to act promptly and decisively. continued on page 43 SUMMER GUIDE 2016 PASADENA WEEKLY
