First comes love, then the marriage proposal, followed by the often intense preparations needed to create a memorable and magical wedding. One of the most pressing details is the choice of vendors who will take photographs, cater the food, provide wedding apparel for the bride and groom and supply other services on wedding day. While some couples let wedding planners select vendors, others prefer to do this themselves. This is a tale of five weddings — and the vendors who contributed to the events’ success.

ic R. Roman and Monica Flores Roman met at a professionals’ networking event, eyeing each other from opposite sides of the room. Several months later the two had their second meeting at an office birthday party at Lola’s martini bar. They started discretely dating, keeping their office romance secret for more than a year as they built a successful financial practice. One night last year, Ric told Monica they were meeting clients for dinner. But the dinner was at Lola’s and the clients were nowhere in sight. Ric read Monica a poem he wrote to express his love, then got down on one knee, pulled out a ring and asked her to marry him. The two were married at St. Philip the Apostle Church, the site of Monica’s elementary and middle school, and held their wedding reception at Alverno High School, which Monica also attended and where she now serves on the board of directors and chairs the marketing and development committee. Monica’s father, who owns a tequila company, gave each wedding guest a bottle of extra anejo tequila decorated with the bride and groom’s logo.

atrice Cardamone Veyna and Brandon Veyna have been inseparable since they met seven years ago. Back then, Patrice, a student at Pepperdine University, and her friends stopped at Duke’s Restaurant in Malibu before heading for spring break in Palm Springs. “I had just sworn off guys,” Patrice recalls. “However, right when we walked into Duke’s there was a very handsome surfer guy at the bar laughing with his buddies and my heart and head at the same time went ‘oh no, we are in trouble.’” The two discovered they had many things in common, such as growing up in Catholic households and attending Catholic schools. Five years later, Brandon proposed while the two attended Patrice’s family reunion at the Outer Banks, North Carolina. As they walked along the beach, Patrice saw a heart drawn in the sand. Then Brandon got down on one knee, told Patrice how much he loved her and said he wanted her to be his wife. The two got married in August 2014 at the Holy Family Catholic Church in South Pasadena.

enise Robb and Michael Vanier’s relationship proves that dating websites can work. Denise, a political science professor at Pierce College, and Michael, who teaches computer science at Caltech, met on e-Harmony and discovered they had a lot in common. In addition to being professors, they both love cats and write comedy. When Michael first told Denise he was a comedy writer, she recalls she was skeptical because “most people who said ‘I have some great jokes for you’ simply weren’t funny. Mike turned out to be hysterical.” He eventually wrote material that was well received when Denise, a professional standup comic, performed it. Mike also took Denise to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion to see what she describes as “the worst opera we had ever seen based on David Cronenberg’s horror movie ‘The Fly.’” While they were discussing the opera’s awfulness, Mike pulled out a ring, got on his knees and proposed. The couple was married by the Rev. Tera Little at the Neighborhood Unitarian Universalist Church in Pasadena, where they also held their wedding reception. any people start training in martial arts and fi nd a lifestyle. Nina and Kristopher Burranasombati started training in Brazilian JiuJitsu and found each other. They were both white belts the day they met and over a few years they “choked” their way to a loving relationship. In that time they both received blue belts, ran marathons, traveled together, and took part in many adventures. After three years of dating, Kristopher pulled off the ultimate submission — he proposed to Nina during a fictitious belt promotion ceremony with the help of Professor Alberto Crane at Gracie Barra in Burbank. Kristopher got down on one knee and presented Nina with a beautiful pearshaped ring and asked her to marry him…she excitedly responded, “Yes!” After the proposal they continued class and it was business as usual on the mats. When people ask Nina how Kristopher proposed, she usually sums it up by saying, “Proposed, slapped, bumped and rolled… True story!” The two were married outdoors on a beautiful fall evening with lots of romantic candles. “Married life is great,” Nina says. “A family that trains together stays together.”

As Darlene describes it, the two met for dinner at a local restaurant, and from the moment they saw one another, they were in love. “We danced the night away,” she recalls. “We were engrossed in nonstop conversation. … It was like we had known each other for a lifetime.” David and Darlene were actually talking about their ideas about marriage when David popped the question. “That’s when David reached in his pocket and pulled out this small black velvet box. He dropped to one knee and va va voom — he looked in my eyes and asked me to share the rest of his life with him while placing this big, beautiful diamond ring on my fi nger.”

A GIFT TO THE

BRIDE AND

GROOM LET PROFESSIONAL PLANNERS AND COORDINATORS NAVIGATE THE MAZE OF DETAILS INVOLVED WITH PRODUCING YOUR WEDDING BY REBECCA KUZINS

C

ouples who want their wedding ceremony to be a memorable, specially designed occasion will eventually have to answer these two questions: Should they have a do-it-yourself wedding, planned by the bride and groom with help from friends and family? Or should they hire a professional wedding planner to handle the many tasks associated with these events? Not surprisingly, Pasadena-area wedding planners maintain their services can alleviate a couple’s stress by allowing a more experienced and knowledgeable person to sweat the small — and large — details. “I truly believe a professional wedding planner is a gift to the bride and groom,” says Candace Lam of Pasadena-based Love Is Sweet Events. “It gives them peace of mind and lets them enjoy their wedding. Some people think they can do it themselves. But it can get very stressful on their wedding day. They shouldn’t have to be calling the vendors, asking where the cake is. The photographer will be constantly taking their pictures on wedding day, and this stress shows in the pictures.” “We know all the vendors,” says Chabeli Sanchez, a wedding planner and the owner of P.S. & Associates Event Planning. “That takes all the legwork out of planning. I don’t have to hunt on the Internet for 10 hours to fi nd a vendor. “A lot of brides these days want a more do-it-yourself, smaller, intimate wedding,” she adds. “But they still need someone to run the show the day of the wedding.” That “someone” can be a wedding coordinator.

“There are differences between a planner and a coordinator,” says Cindy Pham of Mad Love Events. “A wedding planner plans the whole wedding. A coordinator takes over the month before or the day of the wedding and executes the couple’s plans, so the pair has time to plan the wedding themselves. You don’t spend all the money to have a planner, but you have someone who can help the couple enjoy their wedding day.” Mad Love Events offers four options ranging from extensive, longterm wedding production to wedding-day-only coordination. Love Is Sweet Events provides four packages, with the coordination-only option starting at $1,900 and the more comprehensive “Love with All of Your Heart Planning Package” starting at $6,500. Pham estimates it will cost at least $8,000 to hire a planner, and between $2,500 and $3,000 for a coordinator, while Sanchez says it can cost anywhere from $1,000 to $10,000 or more for wedding planning services. However, some wedding planners argue they can actually save their clients’ money. “We get discounts from vendors,” says Sanchez. Couples who hire professionals must also be comfortable relinquishing control of the details to someone else — a problem for those who prefer to be in charge. “It’s always good to have someone for support and guidance, to give their professional opinions and suggestions and cohesive designs, who will help you along the way,” says Pham. ■ ARROYO WEDDINGS | 23

DESTINATION: HAPPINESS A LITTLE RESEARCH, RESOURCEFULNESS AND PATIENCE WILL MAKE A DESTINATION WEDDING AN ENCHANTING EVENT BY SHEILA MENDES COLEMAN

S

ince time immemorial, it has been a fantasy for many a bride that’s often thought to be out of reach or impractical, but the destination wedding can also be a viable option for most brides who want to create an unforgettable, unique day fi lled with magic and love. A survey shows that approximately 24 percent of weddings performed in 2013 were destination weddings, according to TheKnot.com. “Couples are more focused than ever on creating a unique, personalized and once-in-a-lifetime experience for their guests — plus they’re doing so in a modern way by planning from their smartphones, publicizing details on social media and more,” said TheKnot.com cofounder Carley Roney. With traditional wedding ceremonies costing on average $29,000, destination weddings, which are usually smaller, are often a far cheaper and less-stressful way to marry. Anxious couples often encounter such unwelcomed pressure from things like guest lists, place-settings and décor that it becomes simpler to keep attendance, and the involvement of family and friends, to a minimum. Older brides and those planning second or third marriages often choose a destination wedding because they’ve already experienced the pomp and circumstance of more traditional ceremonies. And many families see these events as a wonderful way to reunite several generations for a much-needed vacation. California native Francine Cohen’s Las Vegas wedding was held at the home of extended family members who lived close to all the

amenities of the Las Vegas Strip, allowing her to provide virtually free entertainment to invited guests. “The best part was not having to fi nd a place since my Aunt Sandy lived out there already,” she said. In the last several years, there has been a decided shift in popularity with regard to exciting places to wed. Many adventurous couples-to-be are apt to see the exchanging of vows as an important part of a larger experience, and opt for locales that challenge and thrill, as well as delight. Las Vegas is a perennial favorite for quick and elaborate nuptials alike and continues to top the list of most popular places to wed. Of course, exotic locales such as Fiji, the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Jamaica, South America, Paris and Italy remain popular and will continue to beckon lovers. Thrill-seeking couples are also opting for more imaginative locations, such as New Zealand, South Africa, Eastern Europe and Tibet. Despite the benefits, the out-of-town wedding isn’t for the faint of heart. Cohen experienced her share of frustrations when planning her Vegas wedding. “The worst part of it was not knowing anyone out there who was providing the services, having to use a minister we didn’t know and finding places to get all of our wedding stuff, like flowers, haircuts and deejays.” With a bit of research, resourcefulness, proper support and a lot of patience, a destination wedding can be an enchanting way for lovers to create a memorable merge. ■ ARROYO WEDDINGS | 25
