Van Dop Arts & Cultural Guide to BC This year, British Columbia is celebrating 150 years of cultural diversity, community strength and widespread achievement since the founding of the Crown Colony of British Columbia in 1858. BC150 is an opportunity to showcase our First Nations heritage, our rich cultural diversity, our shared history and our many accomplishments. Throughout 2008, communities from every corner of British Columbia will showcase their collective histories and highlight their numerous success stories through a variety of mediums. These events and celebrations will be focused on five key pillars that are firmly woven into the fabric of this province: heritage, communities, multiculturalism, Aboriginal peoples, and of course, arts and culture. BC’s thriving and vibrant arts and culture is a product of the people, places, languages and traditions that truly make our province one of the best places on earth to live, work and visit. As you delve into the pages of this guide, I encourage you to think about the impact that our artistic and cultural history has made on British Columbia and the influence it has had on you.
Honourable Gordon Campbell Premier of British Columbia

Happy 150th Anniversary British Columbia! Not only is it BC’s birthday, 2008 also marks an important milestone in the life of this publication. That’s right, the Arts and Cultural Guide to BC is celebrating its 10th anniversary! What an amazing decade it has been promoting the arts, culture and heritage of our beautiful province. Additionally, our partner project: the BC Cultural Crawl, grown from the inspiration and motivation of communities throughout the province, won the Tourism British Columbia ‘Best Tourism Marketing Campaign Award’ earlier this year. It truly is a year of celebration.
message from the publisher
Happy 150th Anniversary British Columbia! Today, approximately 1,000,000 guides have traveled to the four corners of the globe. British Columbian artists continue to inspire, and more travelers than ever are discovering the beauty and cultural depth of our province. I, for one, had the remarkable opportunity to explore the remote islands of Haida Gwaii this past year. But instead of shortening my list, each new exploration leaves me wanting for more. It is the people behind the work, the businesses that showcase it and their joint passion and commitment to their art forms that continue to be an inspiration to me. Here at the Art Guide are privileged to build relationships with artists and organizations throughout the province, together sharing their contributions with our readers. I want to express my thanks to you for ten incredible years! Thank you for your enthusiasm, creativity and dedication to making British Columbia the wonderful and inspiring place that it is. Here’s to another decade of building inspiring relationships! Warmest Regards,
Trudy Van Dop Publisher

WELCOME TO VANCOUVER ISLAND INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED for warm hospitality, gorgeous scenery, and exceptional activities and attractions, the Vancouver Island region is acclaimed by the readers of the prestigious Condé Nast Traveler Magazine and has been named Top North American Island eight years in a row.
Heritage & Culture Discovering the history of the Vancouver Island region is an exciting journey into the past, and full of insight into our modern culture. Ride a steam train through an outdoor forestry museum or explore a fully restored heritage mill where actors demonstrate the tools of their trades. Stroll through flourishing gardens first planted by early settlers or have an English-style tea party in the garden of a heritage home. Visit a community that was established more than a century ago by Finnish idealists with a dream of Utopia. Discover the haunting story behind a significant collection of First Nations ceremonial regalia. See the history of a town depicted in outdoor murals or watch First Nations artisans demonstrate the ancient skills of their ancestors. Museums here bring the past to life: the ancient traditions and proud culture of the First Nations . . . stories of pioneer hardships and lifestyles and the people who built the region’s communities . . . tales of marine exploration, the heroes that charted these waters and the perils they faced . . . the early days of forestry, fishing, mining, agriculture, aviation, and the military. The Vancouver Island region’s museums are the keepers of a tremendous wealth of historic treasure to be preserved and shared. Anywhere you travel in the Vancouver Island region, you’ll find pieces of our history, from the larger collections at places like the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Royal B.C. Museum, Quw’utsun’ Cultural Centre, Nanaimo Art Gallery, McLean Mill National Historic Site in Port Alberni, Museum at Campbell River, and U’Mista Cultural Centre to historic sites and the smaller artifact collections in museums in almost every community on the Island.

Maybe it’s the inspiring scenery or the relaxed island lifestyle, but this region is blessed with an impressive population of creative people: painters, sculptors, jewellers, potters, weavers, glass blowers, wood workers, writers, photographers, designers. When it comes to local products, you have so many lovely choices. Handmade soaps and body care products made from Island-grown ingredients, hand-knit sweaters made from the wool of island sheep, alpacas, and llamas, and handmade furniture crafted from Island wood, to an amazing selection of unique folk art: gillnet rugs, hand-painted gumboots, hand-blown glass, driftwood sculpture, hand-woven textiles, garden art, and much, much more. The potters create outstanding decorative and functional ceramic pieces, and jewellers work their intricate magic using everything from local wood and B.C. agates to gold, silver, and the finest quality Canadian

NORTH CENTRAL Creativity fills the air of the North Central Island region. The Comox Valley is host to an annual artisan festival at the Filberg Lodge, and Courtenay is the site of the international MusicFest, held annually in July. This region is also built on a foundation of marine and colliery history. Museums in small communities such as Cumberland offer visitors a glimpse into the area’s storied past. Quadra Island, a short ferry ride from Campbell River, is an intensely artistic community. Home to over 120 artists, it’s the perfect place to view musicians, writers, and painters in their element. During the first weekend of June every year, the community celebrates the Quadra Island Studio Tour, an ideal way to watch artists hone their craft and exhibit their wares.
NORTH ISLAND The North Island region’s prosperous history and First Nation’s culture touches your soul like the pounding of a handmade drum. The tradition and folklore of the district is evident, not only in the way of life of its inhabitants, but in the art they produce as well. Wood carvings are showcased throughout Port Hardy, and many of the buildings feature expansive murals. Market Street has many popular artisan shops and galleries, exhibiting native masks, jewellery and paintings. Alert Bay, a quaint seaside village, is home to the U’mista Cultural Centre, which features the famed Potlatch Collection of ceremonial regalia. This community prides itself on traditional dance performances, held at the Alert Bay Big House, and also for being home to the world’s largest totem pole.

The Art of Wine Country
Imagine : Winding back country roads,
perfect rows of vines, clear blue lakes, patio restaurants, luxurious resorts and quaint tasting rooms where proud winery owners pour the fruits of their labour. Welcome to Wine Country in the Okanagan! The Okanagan is the home of over 160 wineries producing 95% of British Columbia’s wines. What better way of understanding the art of crafted BC wine than walking the very soil from which it came, quizzing the vintner, and savouring the wine in its very home? After an enjoyable day of tasting and discovery, what is fine wine without fine food, and what is fine food without hospitality and a beautiful setting? Many BC wineries have mastered the art of hospitality by pairing their award-winning wines and bucolic settings with fine restaurants, art galleries and luxurious resorts and spas, while others appeal to the more basic of our needs. It is all here in the Wine Country. Cheers! OKANAGAN VALLEY & THE SIMILKAMEEN VALLEY The Okanagan Valley can be broken down into 7 sub-regions: Kelowna/ North Okanagan, Kelowna/Mt Boucherie, Summerland/Peachland, Penticton/Naramata, Okanagan Falls, Oliver/Golden Mile, and Osoyoos/ Blacksage Beach. Similkameen
The Similkameen is its own distinct region within the Okanagan, with its own terrior. The high-elevation Similkameen Valley is an ideal setting for vineyards. Due to the high mountains on both sides of the valley, and the storage and reflective qualities of their rocks, the day’s heat is held in the valley long after sun set. Keremeos Vineyards, now called St. Laszlo, was the first winery to open in the valley in 1984. Oliver / Golden Mile
Here you will find Tinhorn Creek Vineyards amongst more than twenty outstanding wineries. From Osoyoos to Oliver, the valley is alive with fine red and white varieties which have taken hold of the beautiful and agriculturally protected South Okanagan. This region is located at the northernmost end of the Sonora Desert, that runs all the way up from Mexico. Naramata / Penticton
In this sub region you will find Poplar Grove Winery amongst twenty-two boutique wineries having staked claims to Naramata’s prime agricultural land. The Naramata bench area (near Penticton) is marked by sloping vineyards in close proximity to the lake, with excellent exposure to the afternoon sun. Long established as Canada’s premier grape growing region, Naramata/Penticton is a must-visit destination for wine connoisseurs seeking stunning vistas and wines of unparalleled pedigree.

Apricot Tsaqwem Festival July 24th to 27th 2008 The Apricot Tsaqwem Festival is a community celebration bringing together ST’AT’IMC TRADITION with GOLD RUSH HISTORY throughout the District of Lillooet and surrounding area. The Festival is about celebrating the uniqueness of cultures and educating people both locally and throughout the province. The Cariboo Gold Rush in 1856 brought miners and settlers to the Lillooet area, along with non-traditional crops including apricots. THE APRICOT TREES now grow wild in the area and produce an abundance of small, intensely flavoured fruit that is unique to Lillooet. The TSAQWEM, also known as the SASKATOON, has been an important part of the St’at’imc traditional and culture for years and is valued for it’s many uses today.

the art of collecting
Building Your Collection
By Trudy Van Dop
Publisher and Gallery Owner, Trudy Van Dop provides some tips on selecting your next perfiect piece. ART IS TO BE ENJOYED FOR GENERATIONS: ART AND FINE CRAFT ENHANCE OUR LIVES, BRINGING PEACE AND ENJOYMENT, WHETHER IT IS IN OUR HOME OR OUR WORK ENVIRONMENT.
• Look for clues around your home and office: What items make you laugh, cause you to reflect, or have provided you with life-long pleasure? These are great signposts for selecting your next piece of art. • Lifelong collecting: Whether you’ve realized
it or not, you have been building your personal collection all your life. Notice the patterns, maybe it’s time for a change. • Just have to have it: When you personally connect with a piece of art, take it home. Having it in your home is an entirely different experience than looking at it in a gallery. Once you have it in the perfect place you’ll want to treasure it forever.
134 / The Art of Collecting: Building Your Collection
• Collect in series: Artists often create series of work, but rarely are pieces identical. When you buy a piece of art you love, ask the gallery to contact you when they receive new work from this artist. You’ll be the first to know when new items arrive and you’ll have the opportunity to view the artist’s inspiring new creations. • Art is an investment: Generally, the value of original art increases with time.
About Your Medium of Choice GLASS A remarkable substance made from the simplest of materials—silica. Coloured glass is pure colour. Glass, in its molten state can be formed into vessels and sculptures. Glass is a magical art form to observe. There is a balance between technical knowledge in the gather of glass to the artist dance of creation. WOOD A strong, graphic and textured material that has been used throughout the millennia to create functional and decorative work, enhancing humankind’s environment for centuries. The strong colour distinctions, visual and tactile textures add to this material’s appeal. CERAMIC The simplest of elements has provided man with a lasting history of our cultural evolution. The four basic elements identified by the Greeks are represented in the process of working with clay: earth, fire, air and water. Without these four elements, ceramics would not exist. METAL In the hands of the artist, metal is transformed into functional, whimsical or utilitarian objects of grace and beauty. Metal has a surprising fluidity. OIL AND ACRYLIC Paint is a versatile medium to work in. No two artists paint in exactly the same way! Paint can be applied thick or thin, with knives, brushes or fingers, on cotton, canvas, linen or board. WATERCOLOUR A delicate soft form applied on paper. It is very intimate, yet strong; colours are layered to give a soft, abstract visual sense. FIBRE An exciting tactile art form that is still being practiced today, but in a very contemporary form. Its roots are in textile history and traditions. Painting by Jeanette Jarville, Red Sky Estate; Glass lamps by Laura Murdoch; Carved wooden mask from Turtle Island Gallery; Ceramic vessel by Robert Shiozaki, Ring by Roberto Fioravanti, Crafts Association of BC; Watercolour by Kathy Nay; Silk shirt by Joanna Staniszkis.

7th Annual BC Cultural Crawl August 1– 31, 2008
What is the Cultural Crawl? Every year, thousands of people use the Arts & Cultural Guide to BC to explore communities throughout the province. You too can plan an “art-full” adventure by discovering the art within your neighbouring community. It’s the perfect way to celebrate BC Day and the rest of August – a month of arts and cultural experiences throughout BC.
Where is the Cultural Crawl? Just as every piece of art is unique, every community across BC presents a different set of experiences.
