To direct people to the distinct character of a community and its artisans, creators and history makers.

My own memories are peppered with experiences of a road less traveled. Discovering an artist studio or a gallery off-the-beaten-path. I want to encourage people to be curious, to delve deep into the heritage and culture of communities they visit. ancouver is renowned for its exquisite natural surroundings and buzzing diversity. Surrounded by shoreline and the Seawall, downtown Vancouver’s arts & cultural scene is best experienced by foot. Hit galleries filled with work by West Coast artists, and make sure to snap a photo of yourself in front of one of many of Vancouver’s public art works along the way.

Your journey begins at 639 Hornby St., at the Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art. Surrounded by a serene courtyard, the gallery is filled with the largest collection of Contemporary Northwest Coast Indigenous artwork in particular, works by the acclaimed Haida artist, Bill Reid.

Nearby at the corner of Hornby and Georgia, you will find the Pendulum Gallery (885 Georgia St.) in the atrium of the HSBC Building named for the overhead pendulum. The gallery features 12-14 exhibitions annually and curates to the taste of the general public.

Crossing West Georgia St., you will find the Vancouver Art Gallery (VAG 750 Hornby St.), housed in the former provincial courthouse. The VAG presents Canadian and international exhibitions and houses the world’s most significant collection of works by renowned BC artist, Emily Carr. Check out the curated Gallery Store and relax with artisanal food and coffee on the rooftop patio at the Gallery Café. Don’t forget to hit the VAG’s offsite outdoor exhibition space up the street on Georgia (1100 West Georgia St) featuring interactive public artworks.

On Howe Street, visit the Chali-Rosso Art Gallery (549 Howe St.) and see the European Masters including Picasso, Dali and Matisse.

Walking northbound on Howe St. you will find Le Soleil Gallery (100-535 Howe St.) featuring eclectic and vivid contemporary alongside classic old world masterpieces.

Downtown Granville Street is at the heart of the city. This iconic street is a mix of high-end and funky retail, the entertainment district, hotels, restaurants and more. Tour the 12 electrical boxes wrapped with original art by Emily Carr students and alumni. There are 1 to 2 boxes on each block from West Cordova to Drake Street.

Continue north to Canada Place on the beautiful Burrard Inlet. On the Western promenade, the Canadian Trail is a unique walk across Canada from west to east. Head to the North Point for incredible views of the North Shore. Visit the Pan Pacific Hotel where you will find the Sasaki Art Gallery featuring the work of Japanese Canadian artist, Terry Sasaki.

On the water at Burrard Street, marvel at the awardwinning Vancouver Convention Centre, renowned as a green-designed, state-of-the-art facility. Enjoy public artwork surrounding the building, including The Drop, an internationally commissioned work at Bon Voyage Plaza.

Don’t miss Harbour Centre (515 West Hastings) home of The Vancouver Lookout and the Teck Gallery, featuring socially engaging artwork by SFU students.

Discover The FALL – a multifaceted, art focused Vancouver tattoo parlor, studio, and gallery promoting mixed media, and cutting-edge and alternative art. (644 Seymour Street).

Downtown Vancouver Take in the architectural grandeur of the Vancouver Public Library (350 West Georgia Street) and spot the public art piece “The Words Don’t Fit the Picture” by Vancouver artist Ron Terada. Inside visit the Moat Gallery, on the Lower Level of Library Square.

Heading across Richards Street visit the Republic Gallery (732 Richards Street, Second Floor) featuring contemporary art by Canadian and international artists. Down the street, the unique ArtStarts (808 Richards Street) - the first Canadian gallery devoted exclusively to young people’s art.

e are the keepers, keepers of stories, memories and culture – keepers of art. Becoming an art collector is a deeply personal and enriching exercise in keeping and preserving what you believe to be precious in the world. We are all collectors – our collections are treasure troves of objects that belong in our own little universe telling a story about our lives and who we are. What we collect speaks about what we believe in, what we care about and what inspires us. Museums, galleries and even our own kitchen drawers are archives of the hand-made, of design, artistry and creativity – objects embracing us with the vision of another creative spirit. These objects take on character, are imbued with memories, becoming like companions and vessels containing our most ineffable sentiments. We are the curators of our homes and we fill our lives with objects of artistry and fine craft. We live with cherished, slow-made, artisanal goods. Art collecting is not for the wealthy and the elite, it is instinctive to see beauty and to make collections of precious things. Even the birds adorn their nests. As you begin to foray into the world of art collecting, you will fall in love with something familiar or be inspired by something completely new. Whether purchasing a painting from a local artist that captivated your imagination, or selecting a fine, hand thrown mug for your morning coffee, remember: you are a keeper – you are an art collector.

This is the Art of the Getaway. It’s more than a tourist-trip, more than a vacation; it is the lasting impression of the unique cultural footprint of a community – the essence of the experience that we go on to remember.
