Welcome! Thoughts from the Publisher
Photo: Gabor Gasztonyi
Waking up to the warm scent of Okanagan air. Feeling the mist of the ocean as it crashes upon rugged shores. Watching a ceramicist curling her hands around a lump of clay, forming it fluidly. Witnessing a glass blower pull molten glass from the fire and shape it. Sipping a Gewürztraminer that tastes like the rolling hills and aromas of Naramata. A sea of people moving together to the rhythm at a music festival. That painting that keeps filling your vision long after leaving the gallery… These moments, these memories are the reason for my own passion to preserve, showcase and promote arts and culture in BC. To direct people to the distinct character of a community and its artisans, creators and history makers.

My own memories are peppered with experiences of a road less traveled. Discovering an artist studio or a gallery off-the-beaten-path. I want to encourage people to be curious, to delve deep into the heritage and culture of communities they visit. Through the guide and online companion Art-BC.com we create curated experiences that offer guide users a taste of the essence of the community and its unique cultural footprint. The Curated Community is a journalism initiative that began with the idea of giving guide readers and online subscribers a taste of the diversity, depth and charm of featured communities throughout the province. Check out our website Art-BC.com to sign up for this celebrated monthly Newsletter publication. Whether you’re road tripping on the Island with the Guide in your glove-box or using your mobile to discover local destinations online at Art-BC.com, you are the creator of your own cultural crawl through the province and BC’s Guide to Arts & Culture is your directory to real, authentic cultural experience. Warmest regards,
Trudy Van Dop, Publisher & CEO

e are the keepers, keepers of stories, memories and culture – keepers of art. Becoming an art collector is a deeply personal and enriching exercise in keeping and preserving what you believe to be precious in the world. We are all collectors – our collections are treasure troves of objects that belong in our own little universe telling a story about our lives and who we are. What we collect speaks about what we believe in, what we care about and what inspires us. Museums, galleries and even our own kitchen drawers are archives of the hand-made, of design, artistry and creativity – objects embracing us with the vision of another creative spirit. These objects take on character, are imbued with memories, becoming like companions and vessels containing our most ineffable sentiments. We are the curators of our homes and we fill our lives with objects of artistry and fine craft. We live with cherished, slow-made, artisanal goods. Art collecting is not for the wealthy and the elite, it is instinctive to see beauty and to make collections of precious things. Even the birds adorn their nests. As you begin to foray into the world of art collecting, you will fall in love with something familiar or be inspired by something completely new. Whether purchasing a painting from a local artist that captivated your imagination, or selecting a fine, hand thrown mug for your morning coffee, remember: you are a keeper – you are an art collector.

Prince Rupert is a place where nature, history and vibrant cultures collide. Surrounded by lush rain forest, this port town is home to charming historic buildings, independent galleries, funky shops and restaurants. Spend a few days here and celebrate the unique arts and culture of the region. Explore the North Pacific Cannery at the mouth of the salmon-rich Skeena River. As a National Historic Site, it is the most complete cannery remaining of the thousand that once lined the coast, from California north to Alaska. Visit the Museum of Northern BC, an impressive longhousestyle building perched on the bluffs above the harbour. Collections celebrate the history of the area, from First Nations art and Tsimshian performances, to the railway and the development of the port city. he Kootenay Rockies is a vast wilderness of rivers, lakes, waterfalls, beaches, mineral hot springs, alpine meadows and snow-capped mountains. Wildlife flourishes here from eagles, elk, deer, bighorn sheep, coyotes, moose, cougars to black and grizzly bears. The region is one of Canada‘s pre-eminent destinations for golfing and mountain biking, while the many natural, year round hot springs are an international draw. Here you’ll get your chance to visit wonderfully restored heritage towns, thriving arts communities and gold rush boomtowns. Along the shores of the pristine waters of Kootenay Lake and nestled on the mountain sides of the Selkirk Mountains lies the culturally rich communities of Nelson, Kaslo and Balfour.

Performance Art refers to the Live Expression of Art and Creativity. It is immersive, astonishing, riveting and moving. Performance artists engross themselves in living their art live in front of an audience. Perhaps the boldest of all artistic expression, performance art can range from the live reading of a poem, to a musical performance to a demonstration of live visual art. Whatever your taste, performance art enables us to engage in the radical world of the live artistic experience.
Theatre - The stage: the blank canvas of performance arts. The timeless performance of an actor presenting a dramatic monologue; the quiet grace and elegance of the ballet; the extravagant costumes and boldness of the opera; the actualization of an imagined world created by set designers – every experience of the theatre is unique and memorable.

Stay in touch with Van Dop + Associates and keep up with what’s happening in BC’s cultural sector. Each month, we produce a celebrated newsletter The Curated Community. Filled with professionally authored editorial and rich imagery, the newsletter highlights one BC community every month.
The Guide is part of our multi-leveled marketing initiatives that gather artists and cultural producers together to generate ideas for original arts and cultural events, and provide leadership for the artists and individuals that realize them. We believe in the arts and the ability of creative individuals to shape the flow of culture, but we can only do this together.
