The Vancouver Art Gallery, nestled within a historic Provincial courthouse, spearheads Vancouver's artistic endeavors, boasting over ten dynamic exhibitions annually. Embracing Indigenous culture's profound impact on the city's art scene, the gallery is embarking on a monumental relocation project. This ambitious initiative will see the establishment of a purpose-built, downtown edifice— a beacon of contemporary museum architecture. Adorned with a copper facade intricately woven in homage to Coast Salish tradition, the new structure will shimmer in the sunlight, evoking the fluidity of a protective blanket, emblematic of inclusivity and rootedness in Coast Salish heritage.

Designed to welcome trail users to or from the traditional Squamish Village of Eslh7ah, the sculpture features a pair of hands in an upright position, symbolizing a traditional Salish welcoming gesture.

The Welcome Figure

A landmark in Ambleside Park, visible from Lions Gate Bridge, Stanley Park, and West Vancouver's waterfront, the Welcome Figure is made from an old-growth cedar log from Hollyburn Mountain. It's a gift from the Squamish Nation, marking K'aya'chtn (gathering of ocean canoes).

The Squamish Thunderbird Head

Two upright paddles symbolize mutual respect in the design, with a Squamish Thunderbird head between them representing the Squamish Nation. The great canoe embodies the journey to build a foundation for future generations in West Vancouver and the Squamish Nation communities.

Your official invitation to visit Cowichan

We welcome you to spend time in the slow pace of Cowichan, wandering from studio to studio. Local artists opening their doors and hearts to see their processes, projects and galleries. All things carefully curated with all kinds of mediumspainting, carving, and glass blowing to metalwork, sculpture, pottery and textiles. A showcase of awe-inspiring local goods.

Our artist groups and societies co-create annual tour weekends in the spring and fall, while many artists host year-round open studios (appointments usually booked via their contact information). A handcrafted work is a tangible piece of our region to take home with you. A talking point or visual prompt to resurface the time you spent with us. There’s abundant inspiration to be found in the landscape and our long history of culture and art - the murals in Chemainus paint a picture of some of those stories.

Amongst our artists and studios lies the history of Cowichan. We have found that experiencing the history of the land you are walking on fosters a true grounding in a place; a deeper understanding that provides context to the present. Human history from the Cowichan Tribes who have graced and cared for this land since time immemorial. Learn about Indigenous stories through a self-guided totem tour in downtown Duncan.

Even as locals, we have much to learn and we welcome visitors to learn with us through the living history experienced in vivid storytelling and our spread of intriguing museums. We have traditional museums to tell our story, and even more specialized museums that share specific parts of our heritage like the 100-acre BC Forest Discovery Museum with forestry and locomotive history. Our history is waiting to be felt, our traditions passed down through generations. We welcome you to warm your heart in Cowichan.
