Welcome! Thoughts from the Publisher Photo: Gabor Gasztonyi

or over 15 years my life has revolved around endeavouring to curate the innumerable cultural offerings of my beautiful home: British Columbia. This is our 15th Anniversary Edition and as I reflect upon my experience, I realize that I have spent nearly a lifetime exploring this province and the wealth of artistry and culture that breathes within it. Every year I discover something new and unique. Whether I am remembering a recent trip to the Sunshine Coast, or noticing a new artist in my community, each experience spurs me on to draw the world's attention to the spectacular cultural diversity of our province. I hope to share this life long love affair with each and every person that picks up the guide or clicks on a community map on Art-BC.com. Maybe that’s you – allow me to share my experiences as you plan, experience and discover SuperCultural BC.

What makes BC an exceptional cultural experience? Artists from all over the world take up residence in BC. There is nothing like it in the world: the rugged coast, the wild, untouched wilderness, and the life-giving abundance of the temperate climate. Our multi-cultural heritage coupled with a lifestyle that values wellness and adventure offer limitless inspiration for every creative endeavour.

What kind of traveller can use the guide? With each edition that goes to press, I imagine the Guide in the hands of a curious traveller looking for an authentic, cultural experience. From cover to cover, the Arts & Cultural Guide to BC showcases the very best of BC’s Aboriginal culture, galleries, heritage sites, creative communities, cultural getaways, theatres, festivals and more. It is a labour of love.

Why this guide? Right now, BC’s Guide to Arts & Culture is the only cross-regional, province-wide publication offering visitors region-by-region curated cultural experiences. All of the unique experiences I have had are represented in this guide and on-line for creative travellers to plan their own BC Cultural Crawl.

Warmest regards,

Trudy Van Dop Publisher & CEO

Paintings Art collector, gallery owner, consultant and cultural activist Trudy Van Dop shares her insight into the art of collecting paintings.

What is a Collection?

We all collect things throughout our lives. Some collections are sentimental, some are made up of heirlooms. Some are expensive, some are eccentric and only have value to the collector. Whatever the objects that make up our collections, we make a home for them and preserve them, adding to them and admiring them. They are an expression of ourselves – a reflection of something deeply important to us. Collecting art is about reflecting our taste, our passion, our desire, and our essence through the vision of another creative spirit.

What to Collect?

Collect something you cannot forget. When we fall in love with a painting, we are responding to and relating to the expressive action of another. We find meaning in the stroke of the brush – we are moved by the use of colour. Whether the image is an abstract expressionist fury of colour and marks, or a detailed and life-like rendering of a familiar landscape, something in us desires to hold on to that feeling forever.

Why buy a painting?

Buying a painting is about more than just owning something that beautifies your space. While art can certainly serve that function, the desire to collect art is more than material: it is a desire to support creativity, to participate in history – to see a story and become a part of it. A painting is something that is meaningful the first time you see it and goes on to acquire meaning throughout its lifetime – passing from one generation to another, one home to another, always being interpreted in a new way.

Jewelry is treasured Rings by Joanna Lovett Sterling

Ring and pendant by Dariusz Bebel

Whether it is a wedding ring we wear every day or the pendant we don for special occasions, we all know what it is like to have a treasured piece of jewelry. Collecting handmade jewelry gives us an opportunity to adorn ourselves with locally made, one-of-a-kind works of art.

One-of-a-Kind

Every item created by a jewelry artist is a truly unique wearable work of art.

Timeless

A piece of jewelry created by an artist is not at the whim of trends but crafted by experience and honed by expertise.

The Story

Artisan jewelry carries a voice of its own: it can become an inspiration for conversation. Share the story about the artist, the way you acquired it, their inspiration for the piece and, over time, this story becomes your story. to another, one home to another, always being interpreted in a new way.

Forever

Jewelry is something we enjoy, care for and pass down from one generation to another. Handcrafted jewelry encompasses all that is precious about this medium: elevated by the creativity of its creator and invested with meaning by each wearer.

rtists of all kinds take to the Haida Gwaii where ancient groves and rugged terrain give the misty isles the allure of an undefiled and undiscovered sacred place, steeped in the dynamic Aboriginal Culture of the Haida Nation. The seafaring Haida people possess a long history spanning over 12,000 years. The rich history of the culture, ancestry and heritage of the people is showcased through artifacts and artistry displayed at the Haida Gwaii Museum (see page 114). Qwaii Haanas National Park is an authentic heritage site containing the vestiges of old Haida villages nestled in the unique ecosystem that partially escaped the last ice age. Further inland, the heritage of the Nisga’a people creates a strong contemporary cultural presence. Housed in a modern day longhouse, the Nisga’a Museum is located in the Nass Valley, showcasing the rich cultural, social, and political history of the Nisga’a (see page 115). On the outskirts of Old Hazelton stands the ‘Ksan Historical Village. Comprised of seven longhouses, the village has been recreated to commemorate the heritage of the Gitxsan people. (see page 118). Further at Kitwanga, just west of Hazelton on Highway 37 stand the largest grouping of totem poles in the Pacific Northwest! Spend time in the lively and creative community of Terrace (see page 116) whose unique cultural footprint has its roots deep in the history of the immigrant settlers that populated the area over a century ago. The curious visitor discovers a time past in places like the Heritage Park as well as the George Little House – a renovated heritage home with gallery space and a monthly afternoon tea event. Riverboat Days Festival is held each summer to commemorate the steam-boats that plied the Skeena River linking Terrace with the coast. Terrace is also home to the Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art where tours can be booked to watch Aboriginal artists hone and pass on their skills in creating both traditional and contemporary pieces and keeping alive the inherited skills of their ancestors.

errace is named for the benches that descend toward the Skeena River, the traditional centre of the region. Tsimshian people at Gitaus and at Kitsumkalum used—and use—the Skeena for food, transportation, and stories. Riverboats brought European settlers to the area, and today, art is carved and displayed at Kitselas Canyon, a Tsimshian historic site along the river. he journey North follows the trail of the pioneers that forged their way through the most rugged terrain. Interact with unique and untouched wilderness and experience a land richly steeped in Aboriginal history. Settlers brought their own brand of culture to the region throughout the century – experience chainsaw carvings, pioneer and military heritage sites, a massive dam, prairie farmland, geocaches, and preserved dinosaur fossils - all cultural experiences that can be found in the Peace Region in North Eastern British Columbia. Here lie the communities of Chetwynd, Dawson Creek, Pouce Coupe, and Tumbler Ridge. Your exploration may begin in Chetwynd, home to 140 chainsaw sculptures and home of the International Chainsaw Carving Competition. Pick up a brochure from the local visitors centre for a self-guided tour of these larger than life works. Midway between Chetwynd and Fort St John is Hudson Hope. Visiting the local museum, travellers discover North America’s finest fossilized dinosaur footprints as well as artifacts from the Aboriginal and the pioneer cultures in the area. If your journey takes you on to Dawson Creek, you cannot miss the renovated 1930’s grain elevator that has been turned into a cherished art gallery and is arguably the cultural hub of the North East. Dawson Creek is at the junction of 4 highways and the start of the infamous Alaska Highway. The history of the highway is as interesting as the journey North and it can be discovered at the Alaska Highway House – home of numerous exhibits and interactive displays detailing the Alaska Highway story. The “Mile Zero Marker” is a pit stop along the highway where many a selfie has been snapped!

The Peace Region is also known for its “pioneer capital” of Pouce Coupe – take a self guided tour and visit the pioneer heritage village where artifacts from the early settlers in 1889 are exhibited at the Heritage House, Trapper’s Cabin, and the NAR Train Station reflecting the early days in North American history. If you are in the area, July 1st a must experience is the Canada Day Parade and festivities where the North East gathers to celebrate Canada Day! South of Dawson Creek and Pouce Coupe on Highway 52 is Tumbler Ridge home of the Dinosaurs and the newly designated Geopark. The Dinosaur Discovery Gallery is where to go to learn about these creatures from a bygone era. In 2014 Tumbler Ridge designated the site of Global Geopark of which there are less than 100 Geoparks scattered across 27 countries! Before heading home enjoy the scenic three hundred mile drive to Fort Nelson “Mile 300” on the famed Alaska Highway. Step back in time at the Fort Nelson Heritage Museum. Collections include running antique vehicles and artifacts from the construction of the Alaska Highway taking you back to days long past.

Impressions of Community – the by Kahla Yzerman

S

ome of the best travel memories are early morning coffees at the local shop where we felt like a local or the first and last bite of a perfect meal prepared with local ingredients unlike anything we’ve had before; or the painting we bought from the local gallery. This is the Art of the Getaway. It’s more than a tourist-trip, more than a vacation; it is the lasting impression of the unique cultural footprint of a community – the essence of the experience that we go on to remember. The Art of the Getaway showcases the unique, lasting and exceptional qualities of the community, giving Culturally Curious Travellers the opportunity to imagine not only visiting, but immersing themselves in the culture of the place.

British Columbia is internationally recognized as one of the most beautiful places in the world – a global destination for authentic travel and adventure. The diversity and majesty of the natural landscape has long inspired flourishing culture in the province. Not only is BC Supernatural, it is SuperCultural. Every community in the province has a unique cultural footprint; steeped in history and Aboriginal heritage, and brimming with art and adventure. It would take a lifetime to explore it all. From luxury, secluded resorts built into the rugged and wild coastline of Vancouver Island to quiet B&B’s nestled in the calm of lazy wine-country in the Okanagan – be inspired by the scenery and stay for the culture. Visitors can also go online to discover even more of what the community has to offer at Art-BC.com and fill-up your itinerary with BC’s Best cultural experiences.
