Beginning this discovery of Vancouver’s rich creativity and cultural scene is as simple as starting your own self-guided tour: simply start walking.

There are many public artworks to be explored at any time of day; begin by finding the 18 Mosaic Art Tiles placed throughout the Downtown area. You will find the first one located just outside the entrance to Cathedral Place. Use page 15 as a reference to discover the rest.

You may wish to start at 639 Hornby near the corner of the Georgia and Hornby with the Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art in Cathedral Place. Its calming courtyard and exquisite architecture make this downtown location a must-visit and excellent starting point.

Going south, on the north-east corner of Hornby and Georgia you will find the Pendulum Gallery in the atrium of the HSBC Bank. Look up and you will see where the name came from. South across Georgia Street you will find the Vancouver Art Gallery, housed in the former provincial courthouse. The VAG presents national and international exhibitions and houses the world’s most significant collection of works by renowned BC artist, Emily Carr.

Back on Georgia, turn north on to Howe Street and visit The Howe Street Gallery (555) followed by the Dorian Rae Collection located at 410 Howe. Turning back south on Howe Street, turn east on Dunsmuir and drop into the Art Institute (SW corner of Dunsmuir and Granville) for a culinary experience before heading for the Michel Blais Gallery of Contemporary French-Canadian art (415 Dunsmuir). Heading South from Dunsmuir head to the Art Works Gallery (225 Smithe Street, 604.688.3301) as well as the Contemporary Art Gallery located at 555 Nelson. Both well worth taking in.

South Island The South Island is the perfect blend of historical opulence and rustic charm. The capital city of Victoria is one of Canada’s most beautiful, rich with fully-restored heritage buildings and bustling Inner Harbour. And there are enough festivals and events in this region to keep you coming back for more! Highlight events include Victoria Highland Games, JazzFest International, Symphony Splash, Victoria Dragon Boat Festival and the Vancouver Island Blues Bash. Thirty-five minutes southwest of Victoria puts you on the doorstep of the ruggedly wild Sooke to Port Renfrew region, where wildlife is plentiful and creativity flourishes. Close by are The Butchart Gardens, a National Historic Site with 55 acres of wonderful floral displays and sculptured gardens, Victoria Butterfly Gardens, and the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre.

Central Island The Central Island is quickly becoming known as the arts and festival district. If you love seeing artists at work or enjoy the variety of festivals, this region is the place for you. Nanaimo, Parksville and the Qualicum Beach region play host to several festivals throughout the year including the Maple Sugar Festival in February highlighting francophone heritage, the Canadian Open Sand-Sculpting Competition in July and the Bard to Broadway Theatre from late June through August featuring live summer theatre, Island style. With the beautiful scenery found within this region, it’s difficult to ignore the creativity that flourishes. Artists either have studios that are open to visitors or they work at collaborative gallery spaces such as the Oceanside Arts Council and the Station Gallery in Parksville and the Old School House Arts Centre in Qualicum Beach, which are open to the public.

Pacific Rim The Pacific Rim beckons with a plethora of exciting activities that awaken the artist in everyone. Start your journey in the heart of the Alberni Valley where history and antiquities coalesce. Take a ride on a steam powered locomotive and explore the region’s remarkable past at historic lighthouses and lookout points. There are several ways to enjoy the arts in the region and the many festivals are a testament to the creativity and diversity that flourish here. Annual festivals include the Pacific Rim Whale Festival in March, Shorebird Festival in May, Lantern Festival in August, and Alberni Fall Fair in September, and feature gifted artisans from within the community.

north Central Experience the adventures of true wilderness in the North Central Island region while maintaining all the comforts of home. The Comox Valley is host to an annual artisan festival at the Filberg Lodge in Comox, Courtenay is the site of the international Vancouver Island MusicFest held annually in July and Cumberland hosts the Big Time Out in August. This region is also built on a foundation of marine and colliery history. Museums in small communities such as Cumberland offer visitors a glimpse into the area’s storied past. Celebrate rivers, fly-fishing and the legacy of writer Roderick Haig-Brown during Campbell River’s HaigBrown Festival held every year in late September. Quadra Island, a short ferry ride from Campbell River, is an intensely artistic community home to over 120 artists and is the perfect place to view musicians, writers, and painters in their element. During the first weekend of June every year, the community celebrates the Quadra Island Studio Tour, an ideal way to watch artists hone their craft and exhibit their wares.

The tradition and folklore of the district is evident, not only in the way of life of its inhabitants, but in the art they produce as well. Wood carvings are showcased throughout Port Hardy and many of the buildings feature expansive murals. hen Billy Barker struck gold on Williams Creek in 1862 he probably couldn’t have predicted how many thousands of prospectors would travel great distances for a shot at becoming rich. Barkerville boomed between 1862 and 1870, with more than 100,000 people traveling on the Cariboo Wagon Road to work on the gold fields. Barkerville was once a bustling city filled with traffic, people, excitement and optimism — it didn’t take long to become the largest city west of Chicago and north of San Francisco. The historic town of Barkerville is now BC’s largest living museum and hosts more that 65,000 guests throughout the summer. Walk down the streets where miners once walked, take a stagecoach ride, and interact with the costumed interpretive staff. The Chinese community was an integral part of Barkerville life for nearly 100 years. They established a number of businesses, including the Kwong Lee Company, a general store that sold groceries, clothing, hardware, and mining tools. The Chinese community also built cabins for Chinese miners and Tai Ping (the “Peace Room”) a nursing facility for the elderly. Visiting Barkerville is truly like going back in time, with more than 125 heritage buildings, live theatre and demonstrations. History will truly come to life as you explore what Barkerville has to offer.

Building your Collection Art is to be enjoyed for generations. Art and craft enhance our lives, bringing peace and enjoyment, whether it is in our home or our work environment. Collecting is an investment in your life and the generations to come. Approach your collection with this in mind.

Look for clues around you. What items make you laugh, cause you to reflect, or have provided you with life-long pleasure? These are great signposts for selecting your next piece.

Be a lifelong collector. Whether you’ve realized it or not, you have been building your personal collection all your life. Notice patterns; maybe it’s time for a change.

Just have to have it? When you personally connect with a piece of art, take it home. Having it in your own space is an entirely different experience than looking at it in a gallery. (Most galleries have a lending policy.) Once you have it in the perfect place you’ll want to treasure it forever.

Collect in series. Artists often create series of work but rarely are pieces identical. When you buy a piece of art you love, ask the gallery to contact you when they receive new work from this artist. You’ll be the first to know when new items arrive and can have your pick of the artist’s inspiring new creations.

If you are new to collecting, start by exploring galleries and learning about certain mediums that pique your interest. If you are a seasoned collector you’ll keep following your passion for a particular medium or artist. In either case, we hope these Art of Collecting tips help you along the way.
