W

hen you have had the good fortune of spending your entire life in a province like British Columbia it is easy to be spoiled. Sure, other countries have their charms: New Zealand their fjords, Mexico their beaches, but when I return home, circling Vancouver’s inner harbour, I never cease to let out an untethered sigh. I am home.

Pieter Molenaar

Here the mountains leap from an ocean floor, ancient cedars stretch the length of our borders, and towns and cities nestle lakes, rivers, streams and inlets. Simply put, British Columbia is the best place on earth. While the outdoor beauty of BC is second-to-none, it’s the arts and heritage of this province that keeps me packing up my bags and heading out to explore.

It is easy for me to choose British Columbia over luxe cross-continental getaways. While the streets of Paris are brim with l’amour, there’s a price to match. As the second largest country in the world, there are 9,984,670 kilometres to explore in Canada, and with more than 24,000 artists in BC alone, the creative getaways are limitless. When communities preserve their heritage they steward their story. There is not one of us who travel this incredible province that doesn’t make a point of looking for the local museum and historic site to spend time trying to trace the history of the unique communities that make up our province.

2  /   Publisher’s Welcome

Welcome to Super Cultural BC

Monk

Though British Columbia is young, its history is rich. From the hallowed hallways of Emily Carr House in Victoria to the “Big House” at Fort Langley where the Father of British Columbia James Douglas held the ceremony proclaiming the establishment of British Columbia, the characters from BC’s past have touched all corners of this province. Preserving, recognizing and educating about BC’s and Canada’s history and heritage is a vital component of what makes this country and this province a vibrant, democratic and cultural place to live, work and visit. My personal approach to planning a cultural getaway involves finding a prime location with walkable experiences nearby and a few choice destinations off-the-beaten-path. When seeking out farm tours, remote in-house studios, hillside wineries and the unique heritage that moors a community, I am never at a loss. People are hungry to share, and I am open to listen. Visit page 150 to learn more about planning your own creative BC getaway or visit page 152 for a chance to win a two day getaway at Sparkling Hill Resort in Vernon. So, this year, whether you are visiting from overseas or exploring your own backyard, stretch a little, befriend a neighbour, and discover a British Columbia you won’t soon forget. I promise, you won’t be disappointed. Warmest regards,

U’mista Cultural Centre, Alert Bay

A sneak peek at BC’s best & brightest

T

here used to be a little upstairs room on Vancouver’s Granville Street: the hippest, most creative little restaurant called the Sugar Refinery where you’d spot the musical likes of Rufus Wainwright. Though the tiny live music venue closed its doors in 2004, spots like it are legion If you know who to ask. Have you ever wanted to be an undercover tourist? Perhaps your guidebook is thumbed to within an inch of its life? Or maybe you are the type who carefully plans what to do and where to go – so long as it includes all the latest places to see and be seen in. Whatever your type, British Columbia is a veritable mecca for the cultural enthusiast, promising a bucket list of experiences you won’t soon forget. Here’s an insider’s view of the province:

Best of the City BC’s capital city of Victoria is home to the Belfry, a theatre that produces contemporary plays with an emphasis on new Canadian work. The must-see theatre resides in a former Baptist Church built between 1887 and 1892 and is today an award-winning heritage site. Belfry Theatre, Victoria

While visiting our culture-laden capital, be sure to get your local fashion fix on Victoria’s Lower Johnston Street and hunt down Russell’s rare, used and out-of-print books, all between art galleries, ice cream parlours and fair trade coffee houses.

Best of the Country The best of the country lies well off the beaten path. To create memories that last a lifetime, get in the car or borrow a bike, and follow the country roads as far as your feet will take you. One of BC’s best-kept secrets is its circle farm tours. Consider taking a spin on the original Agassiz-Harrison route (near Harrison Hot Springs) where Farm House Natural Cheeses offers you a view of the cheesemaking process and a taste of pure country – artisan cheeses and dairy products made with pure milk from the cows and goats right on their family farm.

Britannia Mine Museum

Fort Langley, BC

Best of our Past

When communities preserve their heritage they steward their story. Throughout British Columbia you will find local museums, cultural centres and historic sites that help trace the history of Canada’s far western province. Though British Columbia is young, its history is rich. From the U’mista Cultural Centre in Alert Bay and the ‘Ksan Historical Village and Museum in Hazelton (page 124), to “Big House” at Fort Langley where the Father of British Columbia, James Douglas, proclaimed the establishment of British Columbia and the recently restored Britannia Mine Museum (page 35), the characters from BC’s past have touched all corners of this province. From sea to shining sea, the Canadian Pacific Railway connects east to west by way of tonnes of iron and a century long history. The railway was originally built between eastern Canada and British Columbia between 1881 and 1885, fulfilling West Coast Railway Heritage Park, Squamish a promise extended to BC when it entered Confederation in 1871. Experience the railway for yourself at the Engine 374 Pavilion at the Roundhouse in Vancouver or the West Coast Railway Heritage Park in Squamish (page 35).

n rural towns and urban centres across BC you can spend a whole day admiring vast canvases and 3-D installations by the best of BC’s artists ... and never step foot inside. Our parks have become galleries without borders, our storefronts have become blank canvases for local brushstrokes, and even sidewalks have us treading on art from the ground up. Look around, and you’ll find that BC’s beautiful landscape is merely the backdrop, the gallery walls, containing the most amazing local art. Murals have added renewed colour to community cores, painting a trail of historical images and urban cultural identity in hundreds of snapshots of Canadian cultural life. Visit Chemainus, known as “Muraltown” (pg 76), to take in one of the most established outdoor art galleries in BC. Chemainus is famous for its open-air murals, bringing new vitality to a town threatened by the collapse of its main economic support, the mill. Chemainus now has over Paul Ygartua, Chemainus three dozen murals featuring images of historic figures and life in the early years. Chemainus is host to the 2012 Global Mural Conference, capturing international acclaim. Downtown Vernon (pg 100) also boasts one of the largest outdoor public art galleries in Canada with over 25 murals that portray the culture, history and scenery that are Vernon’s cultural identity. Port Coquitlam’s (pg 53) vibrant cultural heritage is reflected in the nine murals that speckle its downtown core, and Surrey boasts Canada’s largest mural by Vancouver’s own Paul Ygartua (pg 65). Communities such as Penticton (pg 110) and Merritt (pg 96) have a more contemporary feel, depicting current cultural icons and encouraging the use of graffiti-style art. Merritt offers a trail of images through time, celebrating its quintessential western lifestyle alongside images of the biggest names in country music.

62  /   Outdoor Art Galleries

Michelle Loughery, Vernon

Renowned Mural Artist, Michelle Loughery (pg 65) is Merritt’s Official Portrait Artist to the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame and also the major muralist creating Vernon’s many outdoor paintings. In September 2010, Penticton’s first “ReImagine Art” Festival did just that; more than 20 young and emerging artists were invited to create murals in the downtown back alleys – bringing a new form of art to unlikely places. Visit Penticton this year on September 23–25 to take in the creation of more works in this outdoor art gallery. Luke Hunter, Penticton

Outdoor art galleries offer a fresh departure from the typical gallery experience. Sidewalk and pavement art is just another way to remind us that art is always nearby – we just have to look for it. Vancouver’s downtown now contains 22 mosaic tiles, with more added each year. Use the guide to take a tour (pg 13). So, the next time you’re planning your cultural crawl or art walk, keep an eye open for the outdoor art galleries you’re sure to find. Mosaic Tiles, Downtown Vancouver

VANCOUVER ISLAND

WELCOME TO VANCOUVER ISLAND INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED for warm hospitality, gorgeous scenery, and exceptional activities and attractions, the Vancouver Island region is acclaimed by the readers of the prestigious Condé Nast Traveler Magazine and was named Top North American Island nine years in a row and thirteen times over the past sixteen years.

D

iscovering the history of the Vancouver Island region is an exciting journey into the past, and full of insight into our modern culture. Ride a steam train through an outdoor forestry museum or explore a fully restored heritage mill where actors demonstrate the tools of their trades. Stroll through flourishing gardens first planted by early settlers or have an English-style tea party in the garden of a heritage home. Visit a community that was established more than a century ago by Finnish idealists with a dream of Utopia. Discover the haunting story behind a significant collection of First Nations ceremonial regalia. See the history of a town depicted in outdoor murals or watch First Nations artisans demonstrate the ancient skills of their ancestors. Museums here bring the past to life: the ancient traditions and proud culture of the First Nations; stories of pioneer hardships and lifestyles and the people who built the region’s communities; tales of marine exploration, the heroes that charted these waters, and the perils they faced; the early days of forestry, fishing, mining, agriculture, aviation; and the military. The Vancouver Island region’s museums are the keepers of a tremendous wealth of historic treasure to be preserved and shared. Anywhere you travel in the Vancouver Island region, you’ll find pieces of our history, from the larger collections at places like the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Royal B.C. Museum, Quw’utsun’ Cultural Centre, Nanaimo Art Gallery, McLean Mill National Historic Site in Port Alberni, Museum at Campbell River, and U’mista Cultural Centre to historic sites and the smaller artefact collections in museums in almost every community on the Island.

s editor of SculpturesPacific Magazine, and a working sculptor for the past 35 years, I have had the opportunity to contact, and in some cases befriend, many BC sculptors. A quick Google search on the internet will show you the large and creative sculptor community that lives and works here. Our sculptors are recognized worldwide in astonishing numbers. From award-winning works at the Venice Biennale, to monumental commissioned sculpture pieces here at home, our BC sculptors represent our province in a way we may all be proud. The realm of public art is growing in many of our communities. Public Art Programs are popping up almost like mushrooms in many communities around BC. Many communities showcase their collections, often as walking tours with information at visitor centres and often on the internet.

Jock Hildebrand

Some communities have bought into public art in a big way. The town of Castlegar for example has an annual Sculpture Walk, featuring a sculpture competition which exhibits many sculptures in the downtown area over the summer months. Some of these sculptures are purchased and left

permanently as part of Castlegar’s public art collection. BC’s sculptural scene is dynamic and enriching. Many people involve sculpture as high notes in their travel plans. Okanagan Thompson International Sculpture Symposium (OTISS) created and placed 20 monumental sculptures in 8 communities, inspiring many to make a sculptural pilgrimage from Osoyoos to Kamloops, visiting these unique pieces. I am honoured to be the founder of this project. For more information on these works please go to my website at www.jockhildebrand.com.

As you travel the cultural diversity of our province – take the time to find the sculpture and sculptors who live and work in this province. You will find it well worth your while. Jock Hildebrand (left) Pat Field (right)

Jock Hildebrand’s vision of sculpture has been gathered from his 35+ years as a professional artist. Jock is known internationally primarily for his large public art pieces, mostly in bronze and stone. He also creates smaller works which can be found at the Hildebrand Sculpture Gallery in Kelowna’s Cultural District. Jock maintains his own studio and bronze foundry in West Kelowna, and is Senior Editor of SculpturesPacific Magazine, an on-line magazine covering the Pacific Northwest. Art is to be enjoyed for generations.

I

f you are new to collecting, start by exploring galleries and learning about certain mediums that pique your interest. If you are a seasoned collector you’ll keep following your passion for a particular medium or artist. In either case, we hope these Art of Collecting tips help you along the way.

Look for clues   around you. Barbara Boldt

What items make you laugh, cause you to reflect, or have provided you with life-long pleasure? These are great signposts for selecting your next piece.

Be a lifelong collector. Whether you’ve realized it or not, you have been building your personal collection all your life. Notice patterns; maybe it’s time for a change.

Just have to have it? When you personally connect with a piece of art, take it home. Having it in your own space is an entirely different experience than looking at it in a gallery. (Most galleries have a lending policy.) Once you have it in the perfect place you’ll treasure it forever.

Collect in series. Artists often create series of work but rarely are pieces identical. When you buy a piece of art you love, ask the gallery to contact you when they receive new work from this artist. You’ll be the first to know when new items arrive and can have your pick of the artist’s inspiring new creations.

Mary Fox

Art and fine craft enhance our lives, bringing peace and enjoyment, whether it is in our home or our work environment. Collecting is an investment in your life and the generations to come. Approach your collection with this in mind.

O

soyoos is a delightful, unexpected place. After all, nowhere else in Canada will you find parched hills of windswept sage, vineyards lush with promise, and a desert ecology that’s so anomalous in a province known for its rainforests. This small community (pop 5,000) sits at the northern tip of the Great Basin Desert, which stretches all the way down to Mexico, and edges along Canada’s warmest fresh water lake. As a result, summer transforms the sandy shores into ‘holiday central’ for vacationers looking for affordable accommodations, RV sites, glorious temperatures and sun-drenched, safe swimming beaches. In recent years, however, Osoyoos has charmed its way into the hearts of the getaway crowd. With its First Nations art and culture, unique environment, wineries, spas, and more sophisticated accommodation, the lakeside town is finessing the Art of the Getaway on a multi-experiential level.

Fine Wine

The Osoyoos band has grown grapes in the region for more than 40 years so when Nk’Mip Cellars (pg 102) opened 10 years ago – the first aboriginally-owned winery in North America, it was a natural evolution into the tourism industry. Set on the sage-brush hills overlooking Osoyoos Lake, the winery is the anchor destination for the entire resort, and is an award-winning producer of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and a Riesling Icewine, among others. Nk’Mip Cellars

Spirit Ridge Vineyard Resort

A Luxury Stay

Next came Spirit Ridge Vineyard Resort, an elegant pueblo-style inn with 226 sumptuously appointed suites and villas, all with breathtaking views, and stunning, al fresco features that inspire you to relax amidst the vineyard beauty. Much of landscaping is a framework for various art pieces like an oversized metal gecko clinging to the horizontal side of a boulder, and the imposing sculpture of horse and rider that flashes dramatically beneath the Osoyoos sun. Resort amenities include a quality restaurant, a nine-hole golf course, and rentals, as in scooters, mountain bikes, paddle craft and boats. And there’s a first class spa with pampering treatments such as Desert Glow facial and a Sun Dance massage.

Cultural Heritage

Celebrating the textured history of the Osoyoo band, the Nk’Mip Desert & Heritage Centre is the cultural heart of these First Nations lands. The extraordinary, eco-designed building houses a terrific collection of hand-crafted items, a multi-sensory Pithouse, a film theatre, and a ‘Critter Corner’ where you’ll see some of the desert’s smaller creatures. Nk’Mip Desert & Heritage Centre Outside, you can dig for artifacts in the Living Lands garden, stroll through the outdoor art gallery, take part in storytelling in a traditional tule mat teepee, or simply follow one of the self-guided trails through the desert brush. But tread carefully and wear good shoes. This land is a biological treasure, and home to more at-risk species than any other ecosystem in British Columbia. Paths meander past scented sage, weave around twisted branches of antelope brush, travel beneath lofty Ponderosa pines with their fire-protective skins of thick bark, and beside clumps of prickly pear cactus. You might even come across a spadefoot toad or a burrowing owl, or even an endangered Western rattlesnake resting atop a rock, coiled in sun-bathing repose – perfecting its own art of a getaway.

W

hen Billy Barker struck gold on Williams Creek in 1862 he probably couldn’t have predicted how many thousands of prospectors would travel great distances for a shot at becoming rich. Barkerville boomed between 1862 and 1870, with more than 100,000 people traveling on the Cariboo Wagon Road to work on the gold fields. Barkerville was once a bustling city filled with traffic, people, excitement and optimism — it didn’t take long to become the largest city west of Chicago and north of San Francisco. The historic town of Barkerville is now BC’s largest living museum and t Curling Pa by o ot Ph hosts more than 65,000 guests throughout the summer. Walk down the streets where miners once walked, take a stagecoach ride, and interact with the costumed interpretive staff. The Chinese community was an integral part of Barkerville life for nearly 100 years. They established a number of businesses, including the Kwong Lee Company, a general store that sold groceries, clothing, hardware, and mining tools. The Chinese community also built cabins for Chinese miners and Tai Ping (the “Peace Room”) a nursing facility for the elderly. Visiting Barkerville is truly like going back in time, with more than 125 heritage buildings, live theatre and demonstrations. History will truly come to life as you explore what Barkerville has to offer. Today Barkerville’s history of being founded on gold is turning full circle. Barkerville Gold Mines, the modern day “Billy Barker”, is discovering gold in the area and has recently begun producing gold bringing a new vitality to Historic Barkerville! This section is sponsored by Barkerville Gold Mines, a company committed to profiling the heritage and cultural content of Barkerville.

eciphering the number of artists in British Columbia requires a lot of fancy guesswork, and it’s likely we’re getting the number far too small. Still, by all provincial accounting, BC stands as the most cultured part of the country with over 24,000 artists in residence, more than any other province in Canada. Some artists prefer the life of the recluse, living in handmade huts among the Arbutus trees. Others swim in the culture pond, engaging audiences and colleagues with their creative repertoire. Whatever the locale and whichever the medium, British Columbia’s borders are brimming with talent. From Inges Idee’s slender abstracted rain droplet: The Drop, a laconic landmark representing Vancouver’s wetscape, to Vernon’s charming wall-side murals, the variety in this province is breathtaking. Making is in. Craft collectives like Bowen Island’s Hive are becoming commonplace. Horsefly Manor, a tiny cabin in the woods above the south shore of Quesnel Lake in the Cariboo Mountains, is a shared writer’s retreat. Vancouverites feeling the urge to make, head to the likes of Blim, a shared art space in the heart of Chinatown where you can take bookbindery, life drawing or screen printing workshops. Each city has a hometown Arts Council and other, more organic, arts collectives formed around shared mediums, interests, or age. Some of the best places to discover new artists’ work is at farmer’s markets, local galleries, art walks, and at events like Vancouver’s annual Cheaper Show. Driving through BC you’ll also spot white and blue signs advertising ‘Artisan.’ Follow your nose and you’ll soon be dropping in on the home studio of a local maker. Local pottery studios are an excellent place to buy gorgeous handmade bowls, sculptures, plates or teapots. Whether you’re seeking Haida Gwaii carvings, contemporary canvases, or classic ceramics, British Columbia is yours for the making.

hether it’s the rush of winding through the Rocky Mountains by rail or the quiet pleasure of sipping your way through Okanagan’s best pinot gris, when it comes to planning your British Columbia cultural getaway, let your desires set the course.

Location. Location. Location. It all begins with a superior destination, one that encapsulates the experience you’re seeking. For the rustic-hunter, head to the hills: way, way up by mountainclimbing jeep. For the cool-hunter, settle in for a one-of-a-kind weekend on Victoria’s Lower Johnston Street. For the ocean-seeker, choose from waterside B&Bs or remote resorts. Once you’ve found your destination the creative planning truly begins.

Contact the local tourism association and ask them to send you maps, information about the town, city or region you are visiting, and ask them to highlight any unique arts, culture or heritage locations in the surrounding area.

Keep your ear to the rail. If you are a web-savvy planning type, visit the town’s community boards to seek out online conversations and insider tips by sneaking a peek on the locals. Penticton

Strike up a conversation. Once you arrive at your accommodation you have experts at your side. Strike up a conversation with artists, locals on the street, your host or concierge. Ask them about their favourite haunt and watch their face light up as they begin to chatter on about their favourite place in the city. Seek out a slice of history. When you step

Brentwood Bay

into the heart of a BC community, you step into the centre of its story. Except for a handful of provincial heritage properties, most of BC’s heritage is comprised of non-profit and privately owned heritage locations. These form the heartbeat of BC’s downtowns and neighbourhoods in urban centres and small villages alike, reflecting BC’s amazing cultural diversity, giving life and identity to its communities.

Visit www.bcheritage.com or www.timetravelbc.com.

Stay open. If you’re an early-to-bed type, consider throwing caution to the wind and staying up to watch the stars. Or, if you happen to be visiting the charming town of Armstrong, climb aboard a horse-drawn hayride and watch a Caravan Farm production by moonlight. If you’ve driven 20 kilometres to a remote artist studio and they offer you lunch, or you spot a sign saying: artisan chocolate, this way...follow your wanderlust. The best advice is to throw your suitcase in your room, grab your Arts & Cultural Guide to BC, and head straight out into the heart and soul of the community. It’s the unplanned moments you’ll carry long after you’ve unpacked your bags and archived the photos.
