HOPPER&FUCHS and STOCKMANS ART BOOKS The Collection
We are a haven for our artists and we build a home for their books every day. The beauty of the people we collaborate with is what inspires us. First and foremost we care for the human stories behind the façade of our operations, which motivate us to create something together with you. The myriad of art practices challenges us to make each book publication a unique one. From painting to photography, from dance or theater and opera to architecture and sculpture, from drawing to fashion and textiles. We love to take care of the artist and build an extra stage and space for them within the book. What defines us is a sincere love of paper, typography and other serious matters in constructing the anatomy of the book. Our habitat is nested in high tech print technology with the smell of dripping ink in our workshop in Belgium, surrounded by the humming sound of printing machinery, boiling with activity. Innovative technology and artisanal skills fuse into our vision to create sustainable books for the future. Bruno Devos’ signature is ‘curating art books’ and this condenses our culture and philosophy in making books and experiencing the process. Lately we have been focusing on the deepening of our relationship with artists, publishers, architects, bookshops, institutions and galleries. We are proud to present to you our books.

Stig De Block
Stig De Block Back to Back: From Backyard to Boulevard I spent 4 years, 9 months & 1000’s of miles on the dash, documenting an honest & intimate story about the lowrider scene in Los Angeles, California, USA. I can vividly remember the first lowrider event I attended in Los Angeles. I had driven out on a Sunday in October 2018 to attend an event called Sunday Funday. The concept is self-explanatory: Everybody comes together to have fun on Sunday, without any bullshit, with a common love for lowriders. It was located at the intersection of Rosecrans on South Broadway, on the border between Compton and Carson, in an industrial area—a very long boulevard with factory buildings and warehouses. When I first showed up in the early afternoon, there weren’t that many people out. But within one hour, the whole place was packed with barbecue vendors and people selling t-shirts and merchandise. I feel like there were 500 to 800 people there that day. And for me it was like, “Wow, all the
things that I’ve been interested in my whole life—L.A. culture, architecture, cars, and rap music—all come together in one place here.” ... This project is a way to participate in a culture that I grew up with, but never was a part of because of the geographical distance. By documenting it, I feel a form of participation. I pursue Back to Back to celebrate the lowrider as a muse and to accurately represent the people behind it. To those who are involved in the project: Thank you. I’m forever grateful and carry you in my heart. – Peace and Love. Stig De Block

Bruno V. Roels
Bruno V. Roels Trying to make it real, part 1 & part 2 “I think images are worth repeating.” Bringing many years of work together in a single place, here on the page, rather than on the walls of a museum or gallery, we can consider both senses in which Roels thinks images are worth repeating. In the obstinate and dedicated labour of printing and arranging serial, but different, versions of single images together; and then also with regard to the overall effect of bringing these iterations of themselves into the same space. But there is another sense in which we might find Roels’s work echoing not only itself, but that of those that came before him; and that, funnily enough, is in his refusal to take himself, or his work, too seriously. Just seriously enough, it seems, to invest time, effort, and skill into the production of his complex and subtly nuanced work, but never to the point, that, like Ruscha before him, (the artist who made Various Small Fires and Milk),
he finds himself unable to resist, and more importantly, to play with, the constraints of his own logic. A little like Dalí too, perhaps, who, captivated as he was by the potential of photography to document and catalogue the world, was also sure that this very capacity would result in us never being able to see anything in the same way, ever again. From ‘the subtlety of aquaria’ as Dalí himself put it ’to the fastest most fleeting gestures of wild animals, the photograph affords us a thousand fragmentary images culminating in a dramatized cognitive totalization.’ That too, is something worth repeating. – Simon Baker

Ren Hang
Ren Hang 我母親 - For my mother Sheer visual poetry; the naked human body represented in fragile compositions Chinese artist Ren Hang’s photographs are painfully provocative, but also inward looking and dreamily surreal. His genderqueer compositions are explicitly erotic but never pornographic. Hang depicts the human body as an abstract form, often in idiosyncratic arrangements and perspectives, referencing and simultaneously overwriting well-known motifs and traditions from Western art. He combines iconic images of William Shakespeare’s dying Ophelia in a river surrounded by flowers; of Leda, daughter of a Greek king, and the Swan; and of female nudes seen from behind using a distinctive visual vocabulary that draws on abstraction, Surrealism, Dada, and both historic and contemporary photography. Ren Hang’s analog photographs use a playful, humorous visual language to
relate the feelings, desires, fears, and loneliness of a young generation in China. His works stand as symbols of the youth’s rebellion against the conventions of a restrictive communist regime in which nudity and sexual freedom are subject to government censure and control even up to the present day. Most of the people portrayed are the artist’s friends, but they remain unnamed and anonymous, and the images bear neither title nor place nor date. Although carefully staged, they are infused with an element of fleetingness and evanescence that is often the result of the artist’s quick way of working.Ren Hang’s photographs are a rare ode to human beings, their bodies, sexuality, beauty, and vulnerability. – C/O Berlin, Exhibition ‘Love, Ren Hang’
Ren Hang (b. 1987 in Changchun, China, d. 2017 in Beijing) was a photographer and poet. His work has gained a growing posthumous following and immense popularity worldwide. Up to his death by suicide at the age of twenty-nine, Hang lived and worked in Beijing.

Marleen Daniëls
Marleen Daniëls From Sarajevo To Paris Thirty years of backstage photography in Paris and Milano Sarajevo to Paris, fashion or reportage, deciding on the title of a book is mindboggling. I call myself a documentary photographer that accidentally ended up doing fashion. The end of the ‘80s was an interesting and intense time in world history, and a particularly creative time in the world of fashion. As a young female photographer I was interested in both worlds. I was travelling for newspapers and magazines to the fashion weeks in Milan and Paris and to the conflict zones of Lebanon and Iraq. It was during the war in the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and the siege of Sarajevo that I matured in documentary photography, fortunately without being injured.
Thirty years later, when looking back, those two worlds – documentary and fashion – still define my work. Both are equally represented in my archives. This book, of my fashion work, is the first to be published. I called it Sarajevo to Paris because sometimes I would travel directly from one to the other. These two cities had a big impact on my life. – Marleen Daniëls Published by Stockmans Art Books

Man Ray
Man Ray Man Ray and Fashion Shedding light on MAN RAY, with his fundimental, shapeshifting oeuvre ‘Man Ray and Fashion’ shows photos he took for leading couturiers such as Paul Poiret, Elsa Schiaparelli and Coco Chanel, and major fashion magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar, Vanity Fair and Vogue. With technical ingenuity and humor, Man Ray innovated the way clothing is depicted. His inventive processes and surrealistic winks have had a lasting influence on fashion photography and brought fashion and art closer together. Contemporary fashion designers also find inspiration in his work, in particular the Belgians with their predilection for surrealism.
The exhibition ‘Man Ray and Fashion’ (MoMu, 2023) unites his iconic photography and artwork with fashion silhouettes from the interwar period and the work of contemporary fashion designers and photographers who are inspired by his work. This book was made for ‘Man Ray and Fashion’ with MoMu (Fashion Museum Antwerp).

Karel Fonteyne
Karel Fonteyne Spell An overview of 50 years of contemporary and fashion photography Introducing Karel Fonteyne, one of Belgium’s foremost contemporary and fashion photographers. Since 1968 the artist has created an extensive oeuvre that has its place in the history of photography. His timeless visual storytelling relates to nature, darkness and loneliness, the inner world, and esotericism, while touching uncovered dimensions and layers. As a flagship figure in Belgian and international fashion photography, Karel Fonteyne’s career in that genre spanned more than 15 years. His rather experimental style gave rise to pioneering images that went beyond classical fashion photography. In 1996, he decided to give up fashion photography to develop once again a more personal work. Karel Fonteyne is a non-conformist. He plays with codes, deconstructs reality and
prefers the complex to the obvious. “I usually don’t photograph what I see but how my mind reflects it”. Spell reads like a journey through the photographer’s mind, jumping from photo to photo, from black and white to colour, from staged to spontaneous, from conceptual to fashion photography. The concept story has a direct influence on the variety of techniques. Concurrently homogeneous and heterogeneous, personal and universal, his work is an invitation to construct one’s own narrative. Karel Fonteyne’s images awaken the senses and transport us into another universe. They tell a story without words. 468 pages of the best possible offset printing techniques mastered at Stockmans Art Books.

尾黒久美 Kumi Oguro
尾黒久美 KUMI OGURO HESTER A brief physiognomy of images ‘so I assumed there would be, at some point, a door with a glittering knob, but when this would happen and where I had no idea.’ – Louise Glück, Faithful And Virtuous Night, 2014 One could easily establish quite a precise typology by looking at the images collected and placed in HESTER by Kumi Oguro (the word ‘image’ is used on purpose here, instead of photography or photographic work). Here, we can see – and this list is not exhaustive – female figures, parts of bodies, closed-off interiors that are often empty, abandoned or run-down, spaces, floors and wide-open ceilings, plays on natural or artificial light, the presence of mirrors that are concealed to varying degrees, trivial accessories such as fabrics, curtains, clothes, woollen threads, cotton, chairs and armchairs
that have become worn with use, small figurines, marbles or festive confetti, primary colours and other shades that are, frankly, lacklustre. But, proceeding in this manner, would we knowingly enter this world, of which Kumi Oguro shows us carefully designed and selected sections? A world – a story – that is equally about what she wants to reveal, but which she does not describe to us, and what we are encouraged to discover on our own. Pascal van Loenhout
Pascal van Loenhout UN/CUT Uncut, cutting edge portraits in black and white, and sharp haircuts … in style In UN/CUT, the second monography by Pascal van Loenhout, Pascal showcases his ‘unhairdressy’ cuts. No traditional preface in this book, but an uncensored version of his life story. A testimony of his road so far, including the demons that accompany success and the creative crises he had to overcome along the way. This open and honest approach creates an even deeper impact on everyone who reads the book. The work of the unconventional Antwerp hairstylist was photographed by Charlie De Keersmaecker and given a cutting edge design by Paul Boudens. Bright red hues against a backdrop of black and white images with pages that are cut in half at the book’s centre. The result is a timeless book published by Stockmans, that every fashion/hairstyle fan will want on their coffee table.
Pascal van Loenhout is an internationally acclaimed Belgian hair stylist and global creative director. As owner of the seminal boutique salon and academy Pascal van Loenhout Antwerp, he travels the globe to share his signature style of bespoke minimal cutting on iconic stages from the Royal Albert Hall to Milan, Cape Town and Las Vegas. Globally revered hair stylist Kevin Murphy – the inventor of ‘beach wave’ style and founder of the namesake brand – has worked closely with Pascal van Loenhout for years. He appointed Pascal to the position of ‘KEVIN.MURPHY global design director’ in 2014, a position Pascal continues to hold.

DENMARK
Denmark Anarchives “Multum, non multa.” - Denmark While archives may appear neutral, they are rarely innocent. The word ‘archive’ derives from the Greek arkhe, ˉ which means ‘power’ or ‘domination’. As repositories of documents which affirm power constellations or substantiate historical structures or reconstructions, archives provide tools to legitimise a state of affairs. Yet archives also contain, through hidden stories and information, the potential for change and criticism. It is no coincidence that various artists have used archives as physical materials or recast archival work as a form of artistic expression. The Belgian artist Denmark happens to do both. By deconstructing and transforming bearers of information, Denmark questions power and knowledge as represented by information stacked in
archives. As such, he deserves the label of ‘anarchivist’. The ideas of rereading and recycling are both central to Denmark’s work. In looking for the essence (his motto is Multum, non multa — ‘less is more’), Denmark developed a unique artistic approach that would gradually include print media such as books, newspapers and magazines and folding, screwing and sanding them, gluing them together, freezing them, and preserving them in water, gelatine or paraffin. In doing so, he is targeting not only the media industry but also the art world, and in that sense his work echoes the institutional critique prevalent in the 1970s. Denmark witnessed first-hand how contemporary art magazines, which were founded during the revolutionary late 1960s and early 1970s, evolved from
critical media outlets which played a democratising role, into slick advertising platforms, funded by galleries, forming crucial links in the art market. – Extract from a text by Johan Pas

Ronny Delrue
Ronny Delrue Sculptures of Stones - Cahier 1 Sculptures of Stones, a series of drawings sculpting and questioning the perceived position of women in contemporary times Ronny Delrue’s drawings invariably contain a handwritten note of the date and time they were made. The record is always placed next to his signature and forms part of the pictorial composition. But beyond this, the data also makes every drawing seem like a page in a diary, thereby opening up Delrue’s studio practice to the chronology of the world, to the historical present. Consequently, it anchors his oeuvre within a dialogical context as a receptive entity, one that is in constant negotiation with the social reality. Delrue’s recent series of drawings, entitled Sculptures of Stones, can be situated against this backdrop. They speak to the protests in Europe and the US calling for the removal of colonialera public monuments, as well for
non-discriminatory politics that focus on women’s rights and representation. The Sculptures of Stones drawings depict female statues that are either made of bricks or covered with masonry-like patterns. They form a critical riposte to the heroic male statues of former leaders that are scattered around our cities. Furthermore, the forms also broaden our prior knowledge of the depiction and identity of figures in the public sphere. Delrue’s female figures are remarkable for being both idealized and de-idealized, both complete and broken. The iconoclastic energy unleashed in Delrue’s recent work reflects the turbulent times in which we live. It situates his art as a symptom of tectonic changes, in which new idols emerge to replace
those that are toppled. Delrue’s art not only reports on these changes, but it also contributes to them. – Ory Dessau

MONiQUE THOMAES
Monique Thomaes A VENIR Thirty years of Monique Thomaes’ practice in installation, photography and video art Since the early 1990s, Monique Thomaes has been investigating how the perception and experience of architectural spaces can be intensified, slowed down or questioned. For this she uses video, photography, light projection and reflective materials such as glass or mirrors. By uniting the parameters of building, visitors and artistic intervention, she heightens the sensations of and interactions between time and space. Her aesthetic strategy can be called purified and minimalist. The technological, sculptural or architectural interventions do not essentially transform the given space, but offer an alternative perspective. In the process, the functional dimension of the space is temporarily removed, making way for an aesthetic experience. In her questioning and fertilisation of space, Thomaes regularly uses linguistic
concepts. These provide her with the conceptual tools she needs to interact carefully with the environment and the scenography of the space. Because her working method is essentially sitespecific, it is also limited in time and space. The visual documentation of her interventions guarantees their continued existence. Therefore, the publication of this documentation, next to a walk through Thomaes‘ world of ideas, in a book form guarantees that her interventions come to life in another physical space—that of the book and the page.

Denitsa Todorova
Denitsa Todorova Phosphenes (Seeing Stars) Seeing without eyes Denitsa Todorova takes her inspiration from everyday phenomena. Textures, shapes and patterns such as water surfaces, reflections, marble structures and firework explosions attract her attention as an artist. (...) Todorova, in turn, aims to give visual shape to this, and does so with an almost obsessive dedication. As if she wants, in a way, to return sensory impressions – the intensity of imprints – to reproduce them anew, express them once more, make them visible again. Her work can therefore hardly be called abstract: rather, it is especially concrete, hyper-sensory. That radical dedication also finds expression in her quasi-ritual workprocess. Todorova prepares the delicate paper medium with dimly shimmering graphite powder, a time- and labour-
intensive process that produces various shades of visual density. She then goes to work with them in a negative fashion, by again erasing or blotting out the surface, tearing it up, damaging it or – only rarely – destroying it. In her homeland, Todorova enjoyed an academic training in painting, where she came into contact with the sgraffito technique, in which a line drawing is scratched into fresh mortar. (...) – Pieter Vermeulen The book was conceptually designed and printed to resemble the works of art of Denitsa. Her drawings are made mostly on thin paper that becomes more yellow over time. This concept was executed through the ink and papers used inside of the book. The black ink was custom mixed with silver to create a graphite-like effect.
There are five different papers inside going from dark grey, to light grey, to white, to natural, to yellow. The minimalistic grey softcover is wrapped in a folded poster of her work, printed on wafer-thin paper.

Benny Van den Meulengracht-Vrancx & Bent Vande Sompele Graphic Design of Scheld’Apen Currated collection of experimental and punchy graphic design From 1998 till 2013, a former railwaycanteen on d’Herbouvillekaai in Antwerp that was transformed into a cultural hub by youthful idealists, hoodlums and enthousiasts who called themselves Scheld’apen, was home to an eclectic stream of artists, with over 1300 events occurring in those 15 years, before inevitably being demolished by city expansion plans. All those events produced a flux of visual communication, an enormous flow of printed media that fascinated artists and Scheld’apen aficionados Benny Van den MeulengrachtVrancx and Bent Vande Sompele. Collecting items and building upon an already existing physical archive, they decided to pour a selection of works into a book: Graphic Design of Scheld’apen.
‘Graphic Design of Scheld’apen’ is the result of two years of collecting, three archival residencies at Het Bos (the new home of the still existing Scheld’apen organisation) and a short scanning residency at Frans Masereel Centrum. The book contains over 200 graphical works from a variety of different artists, a preface by Pieter Willems and texts by Roel Griffioen and Pia Jacques. All work was done voluntarily and ordering your book in presale helps solidifying its existence even more. The book launch will take place Thursday, May 18th at The Royal Academy of Antwerp, accompanied by an exhibition displaying key works taken from the archive. You will be given the option to have your book sent to you, or pick it up at the book launch.
The project is a collaboration between artist Benny Van den MeulengrachtVrancx, musician Bent Vande Sompele, Het Bos and The Royal Academy of Antwerp, under the guidance of Nico Dockx. ‘Graphic Design of Scheld’apen’ is published by Stockmans Art Books. Maarten Inghels Maarten Inghels Gelieve in de kelder te kijken - Veuillez regarder dans la cave - Please look in the basement A quirky collection of posters of lost cats, dogs, birds and other pets It was my lover back then who taught it to me fifteen years ago. She collected posters of missing pets. She had them with cats, dogs and even a ferret if I’m not mistaking. Since then, I started doing it too and I came to love it. More specifically, I love the awkward typography, the heartbreaking pleas and the photos that tell us something about a person’s private life. After years of collecting, I decided to call the owners and ask them what happened to their critters. I wanted to know the story of pets that one day decide to go their own way. When I installed a temporary ‘monument to lost pets’ on the façade of Unik community centre in Antwerp, with a selection of stories and posters, I met Jan Lemaire who was so generous in sharing his collection of posters. He brought in designer Jean-Michel Meyers,
who happened to have a brother Denis with, if possible, an even bigger collection, mostly from the streets of Brussels. Via these connections, I came across Nicolas Marichal, who had been removing posters from trees and electricity cabinets in Ghent for 10 years. The people behind these posters also told me unlikely stories of friendship and loneliness in the big city. I now suspect that there are more people out there collecting posters of missing animals all over the world. Rarely do we get a negative response with regards to taking them with us. There are plenty of duplicates in the area and from my conversations I now know that most animals are eventually found. Only once did I feel remorse, when I pulled a unique poster of a lost cat off a façade in Venice between two canals. The shaky handwriting was patently

Christophe De Pelsemaker & Paul Ibou Letters as Symbols International collection of lettermarks, an international selection from A to Z The logos featured in Letters As Symbols are a combination of work made by the greatest of all time and of work by contemporary known and unknown designers or agencies. Looking purely at the aesthetics of these logos, they are all equal and have the qualities a good logo must have. Because Paul and I did not want to make a distinction between famous and non-famous designers, the logos are arranged in a non-specific way. The only order that is used is the alphabetical order per letter. This gives you the possibility of being surprised to see the same level of quality between some of the respected leaders and the less known designers. – Christophe De Pelsemaker
The idea for the book first came about in 1991 thanks to Belgian designer Paul Ibou, a bit of a design legend of his time – yet one who’s perhaps not been given the recognition he deserves – whose work can be found in numerous design books and magazines including 1977’s Trademarks & Symbols of the World by Yasaburo Kuwayama and Yusaku Kamekura, Logo Modernism by Jens Muller and R. Roger Remington, published in 2015, and many editions of Idea magazine, Back in ’91, Ibou had already created the concept, cover and layout for the book; which draws together numerous logos from various submissions by the leading brand and identity designers of the time. However, the book was never released until now, since a collaboration between Ibou and fellow Belgian designer (though of a rather younger generation) Christophe De Pelsemaker was established
in 2017. Letters As Symbols takes a simple premise, showing logos each based on a single letter of the alphabet from A to Z.— 306 trademarks, logos and symbols, each of which is “a celebration of breaking and pushing the boundaries of typography,” according to De Pelsemaker. Casimir
Casimir Works Design with a capital A I learnt about Casimir in the 1980s. He was a product design student, and I was his philosophy lecturer. He struck me as an intriguing personality. He was not concerned with the formal rules of our institution and didn’t take them too seriously. His wilful attitude may have given the impression of nonchalance or a lack of seriousness. However, he always worked with great passion. An (apparent) lack of seriousness and fanatic seriousness or nonchalance on the one hand and perfectionism on the other – how do you tie that together? This hybrid combination seemed to offer opportunities in my opinion. When things don’t fit together, it is often the result of our own prejudice. Contradictory combinations can be the source of a different and unexpected
vision of the world. Casimir’s idiosyncratic contribution to the world of design can be understood in the light of this ‘non-fitting’. All his objects express a combination of non-seriousness and seriousness. Let me try to explain. I would like to add right away that I consider non-seriousness to be a very serious matter. – Francis Smets
