Here are a few ideas.

S

COME PREPARED.

ASK QUESTIONS.

If there’s a specific place in your home that you’re shopping for, try taking a picture of it with your phone before you come to the festival. If you’re looking for wall art, measurements help too!

If you like an artist’s style but don’t see the perfect piece right away, they may have another piece in inventory that’s just what you’re looking for — or you may even be able to commission a custom work.

ART ISN’T JUST FOR WALLS!

CHOOSE ART THAT MAKES YOU HAPPY.

You’ll find all kinds of work at an art fair. A ceramic bowl or vase might be the perfect accent for your end table, or a stained glass hanging might look gorgeous in your kitchen window. Art can even be something you wear!

You don’t have to be an expert or an art critic to know what you like. It’s your home — buy what looks good to you!

Get creative! Check out the pottery tent, try out an instrument, and much more rt-A-Licious believes that art is for everyone, not just professionals! The eighth annual Art-A-Licious festival offers lots of opportunities for kids and adults alike to stretch their creative muscles. Have you ever watched a potter using a throwing wheel and thought it looked like fun? At the always-popular Throwing Tent, you can give it a try for yourself. The tent is staffed by volunteers from the Adrian College Art and Design Department and from the college’s Community Clay program.

The Youth Art Tent, staffed by Adrian College and Siena Heights University art education students, Lenawee Weavers, Barb Baker, and members of Visual Arts Educators of Lenawee, gives the younger set a chance to make their own artwork to take home. Kids can also take part in sidewalk chalk art at designated spots. And what about music? Come to the Adrian Symphony Orchestra tent, where volunteers will be on hand to give visitors an introduction to playing a musical instrument.

Meanwhile, a number of organizations will offer a variety of art activities along Nonprofit Row, including Chiaroscuro men’s chorus, the Clinton Art Center, Goodwill Industries of Southeast Michigan, Habitat for Humanity, Hidden Lake Gardens, the HOPE Community Center, Hospice of Lenawee, Interconnections, the Lenawee County Historical Museum, River Raisin Watershed Council, Salvation Army, Sauder Village, State Line Gem and Mineral Society, William G. Thompson House Museum, and the YMCA of Lenawee County.

D.D. Baker Mosaics • Reading, Michigan My family moved back to Michigan from Colorado about five years ago and bought part of a family farm, where I began to create mosaic art, and then later fused glass pieces. My mixed media mosaics are my favorite art form but I also enjoy creating fused glass dinnerware and other colorful pieces. You can occasionally find me at Gallery 49 in Reading. I can be found online on Facebok at GadflyStudios and Etsy.com at GadflyMosaics. Kristen Barnes Recycled and fiber arts Plymouth, Michigan I love to recycle, whether it’s knitting old T-shirts into scarves, folding orange juice cartons into wallets, or crocheting pop tabs into coasters. If I can make art out of it I will. Luke Barnett Woodworking • Adrian, Michigan I make reproductions of historical Windsor chairs and modern chairs of my own design. I would consider my chairs to be utilitarian sculpture. Comfortable, durable and beautiful — those three attributes are essential to each one of my chairs. I not only want to create something that is beautiful and pleasing to the eye, but it must be useful. I would never make something that couldn’t be used and abused. Rainey Bassemier Ceramics, painting, photography Tecumseh, Michigan Rainey Bassemier was born in Battle Creek, Michigan, circa 1950. Photography and watercolors were his primary media until 1971. In that year he turned to clay as an alternative canvas. He is an avid member of the Adrian College Community Clay program as well as the LCVA. Five cats allow him and his wife Cindy to live in their Tecumseh home. He works for the Chelsea Milling Co., makers of “Jiffy Mix.” C.J. Bauschka Jewelry • Adrian, Michigan As a mom of eight, you can only imagine the need for a creative outlet. (Keeping sane.) My passion for beading has grown over the past eight years, allowing me to achieve my goals with 12 publications in several popular beading magazines, including two covers. I hold weekly bead therapy classes at Hobby Lobby in Adrian.

Rich Bayes Oil painting • Hudson, Michigan A native of southern Michigan, Rich has studied and painted for over 40 years. He is a member of Oil Painters of America, Portrait Society of America and the Lenawee Council for the Visual Arts. He is represented by Kingsbury House in Howe, Indiana. His paintings, while embracing realism, reflect his own unique style and interpretation. His work has been purchased by both private and commercial collectors. Karen Bolander Soapmaking • Delta, Ohio I am a “humom” to two fur kids, and active in animal charity events and rescue. I have been soaping for five years. It all began in a quest to find cruelty-free, handmade soap. I finally decided to try making it myself after purchasing several bars from my mentor, Barb De Los Santos, at Art-A-Licious! I had so much soap left over I gave it away as gifts. That’s when people started asking me to make more. So I did. I am thrilled to be a part of Adrian’s art culture. Lindsey Borsvold Prints and ceramics Tecumseh, Michigan I have been intrigued by the idea of a shadow. Shadows have permanence within a place that is continued long after they disappear. They are always changing because of time, but in a sense they never really leave. Even when they disappear they are still in the same location. I attended Siena Heights University and currently live in Tecumseh. I teach high school art and spend my summers teaching ceramics at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. Nicholas Breivik Acrylic painting • Blissfield Elizabeth Bronson Jewelry • Tecumseh, Michigan As an undergraduate at Kettering University I studied both Mechanical Engineering and Biochemistry, two fields that have helped me grow as a metal artist. After college I knew I had to follow my passions and began learning the art of metalsmithing — I have never looked back. I am constantly inspired by the bond between the organic and the modern world. Richard Brzezicki Stained glass • Adrian, Michigan

Doris Brzezicki Triangle loom weaving Adrian, Michigan Cindy Burghardt Jewelry with marbles Toledo, Ohio It all began when I was getting ready to send my son off to college. I ran across his bag of marbles and I wanted to do something different with them. That’s how it all began. My creations consist of fried and un-fried, new, vintage, and antique marbles. I am having a ball, or should I say a marble? Breanna Campbell Acrylic painting • Sylvania, Ohio I have taken many classes in multiple mediums; painting and drawing are my preference. I have experience in painting animals from life and detailed fantasy creatures. Jerald Chatfield Woodcarving • Tecumseh, Michigan I have been woodcarving since 1984 and am mostly self-taught. Most of my carvings are in relief, but I like experimenting with all facets of the art, including taking classes. I woodcarve with fellow carvers locally in a club setting, teach carving classes and demonstrate the art. Ann Chrysler Dimensional Needle Felting Adrian, Michigan Dimensional needle felting is done with wool batting and a hand needle, with tiny barbs that tangle the fibers as one works. It is a fascinating art and people find it extremely interesting especially once they realize how it is done. Pat Cooper Watercolor/acrylic and mixed media Adrian, Michigan As a graduate of Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, I work mostly in water-based media. Growing up in Detroit during the Motown years, plus extensive travel to the Hermitage, the Louvre, the Vatican, Israel, China and even Lapland have helped mold these colorful visions. I invite others to share the experience of original, affordable art. [patcooperstudios.com] Kristine Cravens Clay • Brooklyn, Michigan I have been making pottery for about 15 years. My training was in fashion design. The transition to clay was easy for me from fabric.

Clay was just another way for me to “construct.” I also love to cook! Often it is hard to find just the right serving dish so I started creating dishes that were pieces to display alone as well as use for serving a special dish. I like the idea of blending the arts, a great meal plus creative serving dishes are the perfect combination. Jacklyn Crawford Pottery • Salem, Michigan I have always needed a creative outlet, liked to figure things out, and loved getting my hands dirty. Clay has offered me a unique, perpetual challenge and kinship that I have been hooked on ever since my first class in 2000. My goal as an artist is to make items that are functional, interesting, neat, and a part of everyday life. Barb De Los Santos Soapmaking • Adrian, Michigan Barb’s Homemade Soaps are made using olive oil and Shea butter to create a gentle everyday formula. Using the cold-process soapmaking method, these soaps will have a thick creamy lather with beautiful essential oils. Catalina Diaz Oil painting • Troy, Michigan A Mexican artist born in 1988, Catalina Diaz is inspired by artists like W. Blake, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Waterhouse, Delacroix and others — the romantic themes, the virtuosity of their technique and the power of their strokes. She is determined to study and develop the Venetian technique of the old masters and enforce the old ways in the contemporary art. She feels an obligation to deliver pieces with profundity, presence, romance and life. Mike Dickie Photography • Adrian, Michigan I credit my interest and ability to appreciate nature to a decision I made on July 24, 2003, to bring God into my life as I battled my addiction to alcohol. It is through Him that I have been able to pursue a goal of “Sharing God’s Beauty” with others through my photography. [mikedickiephotography.com] Brent Douge and Lindsay Mylek Pottery • Lambertville, Michigan Collectively we have over 30 years of experience with clay. Through the repetitive and deliberate nature of throwing on the

potter’s wheel, we are able to find structure and peace in a sometimes chaotic world. Our pieces employ traditional, glazed, and innovative smoke fired techniques. Our studio, M.A.D. Pottery Studio, is located in Lambertville. Rosine Downing Stained glass • Morenci, Michigan I have been working with stained glass for 25 years. Using the Tiffany stained glass method, I enjoy creating and designing picture frames and window hangings. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind creation using various textures and colors of glass, incorporating bevels, metal filigree, gems and beads. I hope you enjoy viewing my pieces as much as I enjoy creating them! Renate Favour Jewelry • Williamsburg, Michigan Mary Gautz Photography • Adrian, Michigan My photography concentrates on nature; I am always looking for different and interesting works of art in nature. I use my camera to capture nature in its ever-changing moments. I am currently working on finishing my Bachelor of Arts degree with a photography concentration, looking to graduate in May of 2015. My website is marysloft.com. Brian Goins Polymer clay • Westland, Michigan I’m a steampunk polymer clay artist, Steampunk 101: Victorian Meets Sci-Fi. I use a lot of recycled pieces in my art, that inspires the one-of-a-kind pieces that I make. I make a wide variety of art, including one-of-a-kind necklaces, figures, boxes, and wall hangings, and I’m also an author of a children’s book called “Madison Marie Goes Outside for the First Time” that can be found on Amazon.com. My art can also be found in several galleries in Michigan. I love to see the look on people’s faces when they see my work for the first time. Linda Good Jewelry and accessories Hudson, Michigan Linda Good has been designing and manufacturing Austrian crystal for over 12 years. Through her company, JL Demmi Inc., she has marketed her necklaces, bracelets, anklets, watches, earrings, bootlets and lariats at fine art and craft fairs and several retail outlets, including

the M-Den in Ann Arbor and several gift shops. Her original concept of using the bright-colored crystals to create sports team colors for female college and pro team fans has expanded to include more traditional and contemporary everyday fashion accessories. Linette Griteman Pottery • Ypsilanti, Michigan Linette realized her love of clay while studying at Adrian College. She is drawn to the functionality, versatility, and beauty of handmade pottery. While at Adrian, she experimented with styles and techniques, and found a niche in creating finely detailed miniatures. Linette still enjoys making miniatures, as well as functional pottery. Michelle Guernsey Stained-glass mosaics Garden City, Michigan It is important to find the artist within ... and at times it is vital. The spirit needs to speak, sing, cry, rant, coo, sigh, whisper, rage, discuss, reflect ... be. I do this by taking little pieces and putting them together to create a story in images, to find healing in arting. Carol Harris and Gina Treece Soapmaking • Erie, Michigan “Gina’s Goat Milk Soap” has been in business for five years. GGMS started when Gina began helping an autistic child with his food issues. Over time she began making handmade soaps, etc. We continue to give part of the profits of sales to his mother, to help offset medical costs not covered by insurance. Gina’s farm and goats reside in Petersburg, Michigan. Sarah Henry Acrylic painting • Adrian, Michigan Nothing is more relaxing than taking paint to a surface to transfer the imagery in my mind into a reality. The messier the technique and the louder the music, the more fun it is to see the end result. Dana Hicks Fiber/textile • Columbus, Ohio As a Michigan native, I have fused my love of fall, snow, scarves, and football, with my love and talent for crochet. I believe crochet is a timeless medium that is good for the soul and good for the earth. I make a variety of functional crochet items for all ages that you can use, abuse, wash and wear, and enjoy over and over again.

Annie Howard Paper/recycled • Adrian, Michigan Annie Howard is an artist and art teacher (Adrian Public Schools, Adrian College, Siena Heights University). She is a mixed media artist who produces most of her work revolving around a theme of repetition and monochromatic values. Annie’s assemblages are intricate layers of media including paper, recycled books, clay and fiber. Linda Jacobs Fused and mosaic glass Adrian, Michigan Fused and mosaic glass and other mediums, combined with recycled items and materials, is what drives my art right now. I love to make discarded items beautiful and loved again. Robb N. Johnston Ann Arbor, Michigan Children’s picture books, watercolor The highest aspiration I have for my art is to show people something new. Within my books, art, or illustration, I would like for people to see something they can appreciate as being beautiful and imaginative, but that also challenges and knocks them off balance. Hopefully, that experience is enriching, and a small piece of it can persist in some strange, beautiful corner of their memory. [robbnjohnston.com] Jackie Jones Fashion illustration Adrian, Michigan I have a degree in fashion merchandising and operated my own fashion design business for many years, drawing and designing oneof-a-kind formals, evening wear and accessories. I also work in fibers, glass and repurposed materials, concentrating on color, contrast and texture. Khayman Jones Drawing and mixed media Adrian, Michigan I am a recent Adrian High School graduate, planning on entering the art education program at Wayne State University, where I have signed a letter of intent to dive. I work in Sharpie, colored pencil, and watercolor and have sold my art at Art-A-Licious for four years with my mother and grandmother. Gabriele Keck Photography Adrian, Michigan Art-A-Licious is something I look forward to every year, almost as if it

were a holiday. Art-A-Licious gets better every year along with my work. My style of photography has really changed over the past year and I hope everyone enjoys it! Mary Kelly Fiber art • Adrian, Michigan Mary Kelly, fiber artist, lives in Adrian. She enjoys creating women’s accessories using a variety of techniques such as knitting with wool yarn and then felting the item. She felts wool fibers onto a silk surface through a process called nunofelting. Other fiber applications are weaving, wet felting or sewing. Many items are embellished with beadwork. The finished accessories are uniquely created purses, jewelry, scarves and clothing. Dena Koehn Ceramics • Adrian, Michigan Dena Koehn was born in Tifton, Georgia, in 1982. Koehn works predominately in the medium of ceramics, specializing in functional ware. Koehn completed a BFA in Studio Art at Adrian College in 2005. She actively participates in the Adrian College Community Clay program and is a member of the LCVA Gallery. She lives in Adrian and works at Whitcher Plumbing & Heating. Michael Kozumplik Jewelry • Sherwood, Ohio I am a 1975 graduate of Defiance College in northwest Ohio. The two semesters of jewelry making that I took as a part of my art major has led to a career of more than 35 years as a studio metalsmith. I am currently producing meticulously crafted nature-inspired designs that are lost wax cast in sterling, silver, and bronze. Ryan Lack Pottery • Howell, Michigan Ryan is a full-time, self-taught potter in Howell, Michigan. His pottery is inspired by nature, fossils, and biological specimens. Ryan’s work is constantly evolving, from experimenting with new forms, new techniques, and new surfaces. He enjoys making functional, decorative, and miniature pieces. Lindsey Lake Crotchet accessories Palmyra, Michigan Using crochet and knitting as a therapeutic outlet after a cancer diagnosis at the age of 29, Lindsey L. Lake, a.k.a. Triple L Crochet, has

been carefully handcrafting each item in her home studio in Palmyra. Being in her fourth year of remission, she continues to create one-of-a-kind pieces, selling online and blogging about her journey. Pamela Lemons Chainmaille jewelry Williston, Ohio Pamela began her career in chainmaille jewelry after she came upon and made a simple chainmaille bracelet from a beading magazine. She was captivated by the technique of linking small jump rings into pendants, bracelets, and earrings. Pamela is a self-taught artist, learning primarily from online internet tutorials and magazines. She has since designed her own weaves and patterns. Meredith Maniscalco Clay • Grosse Pointe, Michigan Meredith Maniscalco graduated this past May with a BFA in ceramics from Adrian College. Maniscalco’s functional and sculptural artwork is eclectic and diverse, reaching a wide variety in audience. Maniscalco’s functional forms are created to have a purpose, use and place. Her sculptural work is a personal representation of the human spirit using the imagery of birds and flight. Elizabeth Martin Ceramics Beverly Hills, Michigan Renee Mathies Metal and glass jewelry Clinton, Tennessee Out of the Fire Designs features one-of-a-kind handmade glass beads and wire and metal jewelry for the person who enjoys being one of a kind! Susan Matych-Hager Lampwork glass beads and jewelry Adrian, Michigan Although beadmaking is a relatively recent passion for me, I have been very fortunate to have my work represented in the last eight annual juried exhibits by the International Society of Glass Beadmakers. My beads have been published in Bead & Button, The Flow, Ornament, and Profitable Glass Quarterly magazines and most recently in 1000 Beads. My jewelry has appeared in Showcase 500: Bead Jewelry and Showcase 500: Necklaces.

Gwen Maxam Ceramic pottery Britton, Michigan I’m retired and have been a potter for eight years now. I love watching an item grow and take form under my hands to become something functional or pretty or fun or all of the preceding. Richard McCoy Woodworking Petersburg, Michigan A former woodshop teacher turned retired mechanical engineer, Richard is a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War. The VA enabled him to pursue woodworking. His craft is an expression of his love of detail and appreciation of nature’s beauty. With originality of form, finish, and composition, he turns domestic and exotic woods and other media into treasures. Louis Mehay Photography • Belleville, Michigan Louis Mehay was born and raised in Michigan and all works are photos of Michigan and the natural beauty that it provides. All works are originals and signed and numbered. Jane Merrills Metalwork jewelry Mason, Michigan Kimberly Myers-Pinkel Painting • Lake Orion, Michigan Kimberly Myers-Pinkel earned a BFA from Eastern Michigan University and has studied figurative drawing with Sari Khoury at Central Michigan University. She primarily works in oil pastels but does not limit her use of media. Abstract landscapes are at the center of her work, but are never limited to that theme. Sharon K. Miller Jewelry • Tecumseh I’ve enjoyed creating things since I was young. I started making jewelry from plastic and have transitioned to using all sorts of stone, metal, and glass beads. I love all the fascinating patterns in the stones and all the great colors in different beads. I like making jewelry people can enjoy, items that are accessible but unique — Something Different. David Montie Pencil • Adrian, Michigan When I first started, it was just a hobby I enjoyed. As time passed and I grew as an artist I realized

that it was not only my passion but also my career. My goal is to bring my art to life as you gaze into one of my pieces you feel you are a part of the sketch. Nadia Packard Pottery • Sylvania, Ohio My pottery is mainly functional; I like beautiful simple and elegant shapes with gorgeous glazes, always looking for inspiration all around me! I have a signature look, I have been inspired by pears since I was in junior high, and the image of a pear is now a very important part of my work. I love the process of working with clay, from the lump of clay to the finished piece in your hands! Scott Pakulski Photography • Ypsilanti, Michigan Hello, I am a Lego minifigure and vintage Fisher Price Little People photographer-artist from Michigan. My work has been called fun and engaging. People often comment on my work for its cleverness and because it is something different. Janelle Pasternak Jewelry • Blissfield, Michigan I first was introduced to jewelry by my grandmother. She is very artistic and always encouraged us grandkids to try new projects. Jewelry design is a relaxing fun way to spend time. I like to make unique one-of-a-kind designs, there are no doubles in my work! Every one is unique; I want my jewelry to fit everyone in a special way! I also want to keep my prices at an affordable rate so that everyone can enjoy a handcrafted piece of jewelry! Jo Ellen Peck Painting • Adrian, Michigan I’ve been drawing ever since I can remember and started painting about 20 years ago. I chose acrylics because the colors are so vibrant and the medium is “forgiving.” Flowers are my passion and to be able to put that beauty on canvas is an astonishing process. I’m constantly learning and trying new techniques to bring that beauty to life. Teresa Petersen Mixed media • Detroit, Michigan Teresa Petersen is an artist living and working in the city of Detroit. She works in several media, specializing in collages made from vintage prints, catalogs, and magazines, found-object assemblage sculptures, and mixed-media pieces containing

elements of both. The individual objects making up each piece form a cohesive final structure as well as individually relate to the theme of the piece as a whole. Her work explores the relationships between women’s stereotypes and ideals: in culture, in nature, and in our throwaway society. Tim Pewe Wood, stone, metal and concrete sculpture • Horton, Michigan Originally from New Mexico, Tim has lived in Oregon, Florida and Michigan. Tim is a self-taught sculptor and works in a variety of materials, such as wood, metal, stone, marble and concrete, mainly using reclaimed materials. His work is shown regionally and has appeared in the books “Strange Michigan” and “Shed Working: The Alternative Workspace Revolution.” Aneliya Peytcheva Charcoal • Farmington, Michigan When I was young I gathered rocks, broken glass, leaves ... To this day I continue to find beauty in everything around me. The choice to become an artist comes with lots of frustrations, fears and insecurities, but there is no better use of my days than to strive to capture the overlooked splendor of the world and its people. Carl Quinn Painting • Blissfield, Michigan A self-taught artist who has been painting for about two years, Carl loves to paint at shows to start conversations. Anne Raczkowski Photography • Brooklyn, Michigan Life can be so fast-paced and sometimes it can feel like everything is moving too fast. Photography has made me learn to slow down and capture the beauty around me. It is a way to express myself by using digital enhancements to create pieces of art from the images I have captured. A day with my camera is a good day for me! Laura Ramirez Aluminum • Brooklyn, Michigan My work is about finding the elegant in that what is considered mundane or expendable. I believe that beauty is not rare, but is all around us. I strive to give life to that quality in whatever it is I happen to pick up. My most recent endeavor is upcycling aluminum pull tabs into beautiful and functional fashion.

Angie Raymond Printmaking • Palmyra, Michigan I make art that incorporates expressive color, gestural bold lines and imagery that is often humorous. The handmade look to my artwork comes from a passion for craftsmanship and hand created detail of objects before mass consumption. I currently work as a graphic designer at Siena Heights University and am pursuing graduate school at Goddard College in Vermont. Jill Santa Rossa Ceramics • Munith, Michigan All pieces are wheel-thrown, hand painted or glazed porcelain. The combination of underglaze pencils and paints is comparable to the happy amalgam of pastels and water colors. Dependent on desired outcome, artwork is applied on green or bisque ware. Most works depict subjects drawn from nature, and profiles are adjusted on the wheel to coincide with specific organisms or themes. David Schamberger Photography • Adrian, Michigan David Schamberger is a fine art/freelance and commercial photographer from Adrian, Michigan. He graduated from Siena Heights University and received his BFA in photography. He also attended Washtenaw Community College and received an AAS in graphic design and visual arts technologies. He is also a photographer for The Daily Telegram. Matthew Schellenberg Silkscreening Farmington Hills, Michigan From the age of 2, I have been creating artwork. I started with drawing and painting. When I became a teenager, I began creating music. Soon, I added dance and novel writing to the list. Later, I began working in wood and silkscreening. At present, I am designing and hand-screening T-shirts and am writing novels. The shirts are obviously inspired by the extremely creative works (animals and insects) of the Creator. The writing is also inspired by love of creation. Vicki Schmucker Photography • Blissfield, Michigan Award-winning photographers Lad Strayer and Vicki Schmucker combine their professions into the local commercial photography business wePhoto. Vicki has lived in Blissfield for nearly 20 years, and

has turned her hobby into a career. While both work in the field of photography on a daily basis, they both find a great sense of satisfaction in creating art. Susan Semenick Watercolor • Riga, Michigan My life’s work has kept me busy as a biology teacher, but I always had a yearning to break away and fulfill my dream of expanding my true love of painting. After 33 years of teaching, I am living my dream. I find contentment in watercolor and try to reflect life’s connectivity and continuity in my artwork. I have a love affair with portraiture and figure. I explore the play of light and shadow on facial expressions. I prefer to paint confident, poised people at ease in their surroundings. I see a variety of colors in faces that suggest the nuances of reflection. In non-portrait works, I strive to give a fleeting glimpse of the subject allowing the flow of paint to dictate the direction of the composition. This allows the observer to complete these images with lost edges. Francis Shaffer Handcrafted bows Adrian, Michigan I stopped working for Hitt Archery in Archbold, Ohio, in 1968 and then 15 years ago started building bows again. At this time I have been trying new ways of making them and Bud Hitt has been coaching me. Christy Shaw Mixed media and jewelry Adrian, Michigan Mixed media artist and Adrian native Christy Shaw uses layers of texture and collaged papers to create meaningful canvas wall displays, art journals, and various other paper baubles. Christy believes her creative process to be therapeutic while leaving behind an emotional visual illustration that everyone can relate to. She has been published in two magazines and participated in trading art in an online community. Dawn Slusser Pen-and-ink stippling Adrian, Michigan Dawn Renee Slusser, a native of southeast Michigan, is primarily a self-taught artists who specializes in realistic portraits, working in mainly the stippling medium, where she focuses on high-contrast imagery.

Her pieces have been said to be living and intense. Dawn attributes her inspirations to the penetrating emotions shown by her subjects and the powerful expressiveness they display.

about capturing a photograph that keeps my soul alive and motivated. The name of my photo business is STIL (Spread The Inner Love) Photography, which is what I intend to do with my photographic work.

Robert Smith Photography • Adrian, Michigan As a boy, fueled by time spent in the woods of West Virginia, I discovered how intricate nature can be. Extreme closeups of flora and fauna offer details of their unique beauty. Having done art fairs including Tawas, Ann Arbor and Toledo, my images now illustrate the Lady Bird Johnson National Wildflower Center and the Michigan Flora websites.

Sara Sych Acrylic painting Allen Park, Michigan I am a female person who does in fact exist. Many things don’t, so I suppose that I’m lucky. Another thing that exists is my Tiberius. Who is a ball python and perhaps my inspiration to the strange worlds that consume several species of plant life that show up in my art. Or is it? Maybe he’s not my inspiration. Maybe I just wanted you to know that I own a pet snake.

Lynn Southward Woodturning • Blissfield, Michigan I am a cabinet maker who has evolved into an artist — someone who loves woodworking and creating beautiful art out of wood. Even though my “day job” is owner of Southward Custom Wood Products in Blissfield, my preference is woodturning using both Michigan woods and exotics from all over the world. Mary Jim Stahl Wood, jewelry and mixed media Toledo, Ohio A retired mathematics teacher, inspired by nature’s art, Mary Jim studied at the Toledo Museum of Art in metal fabrication, enameling, casting, and glass. A certified instructor in precious metal clay and art clay, woodworking is her newest focus. Her work has been displayed and sold at the Toledo Museum of Art, Abbot Kinney Festival, and several art/craft shows. Lad Strayer Photography • Adrian, Michigan Award-winning photographers Lad Strayer and Vicki Schmucker combine their professions into the local commercial photography business wePhoto. Lad has lived and worked in Adrian most of his life, making a record of his hometown through his photography. While both work in the field of photography on a daily basis, they both find a great sense of satisfaction in creating art. Thomas Thiery Painting • Adrian, Michigan Thomas Thiery is a native of Indiana and the Chicago area. He attended the Art Institute of Chicago and worked for a number of years in the illustration studio of Stephen, Biondi and DeCicco. He also graduated from Western Michigan University and received a master’s degree in art from Eastern Michigan University. Alex Thompson Stone carving • Sylvania, Ohio Ann Tubbs Ceramics • Ottawa Lake, Michigan Ann Tubbs, printmaker, potter, sculpture, and teacher for the past 39 years, works in a studio located behind her old farmhouse in Ottawa Lake, where she lives with her husband and a number of cats. She currently makes sculptural as well as functional clay ware, and exhibits in nationally recognized juried fairs and shows. Her travels have been as far away as Russia and as close as the family garden. Bryan Van Benschoten Pottery • Tecumseh, Michigan My pottery is based on form, function and proportion while maintaining aesthetic appeal. The challenge is to synthesize these concepts and find creative solutions for each. Functionality is the singular driving force in my work. While functionality is my primary concern, my wares must capture the interest of today’s viewer through innovative form. Herein lays the premise: I am a functional potter that produces wares rooted in functionality with aspirations to

push the boundaries of form in the name of aesthetic innovation. As time progresses I push the limits more toward aesthetics and the nonfunctional. Laura Van Camp Fiber arts Reading, Michigan Elizabeth vanHully-Bronson Fine beaded jewelry Leander, Texas All jewelry is designed and made by Ellen vanHully-Bronson, a retired architect who fell in love with the beauty and craft of the visual arts in college. Her jewelry designs enjoy a very romantic and elegant appearance drawing inspiration from nature’s beauty, pattern, and color. As in nature, designs may be repeated, but no two pieces are ever exactly alike. Dawn Wallen Sculpture • Monroe, Michigan Dawn Wallen was born and grew up in small-town Monroe, Michigan. A 2012 graduate of Siena Heights University she holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in sculpture. Spirituality and nature inspire much of her work along with the challenge of using those elements to reflect the cultural conditions she observes. She enjoys working with a variety of materials including wood, stone and paper. Craig Weatherby Blown glass • Adrian, Michigan Craig blows hollow forms and solid glass sculptures in vibrant colors. Using Venetian style techniques and inspiration from nature, he creates art glass pieces in a variety of styles. Scott Weaver Ceramics • Horton, Michigan Scott Weaver grew up working, from age 10 until 40, as a stone mason, then studied tile making for four years at Pewabic Pottery in Detroit. He began working as a fulltime tile maker in 2001. Our studio is located in an 1870s post-and-beam barn, which we disassembled, moved two miles, then restored using period lumber and hardware. EVENTS & ACTIVITIES The arts in Adrian: A newcomer’s view By Rob Young Publisher, The Daily Telegram Sept. 19 marks four months since my arrival in Lenawee County. I have learned a great deal about the community in the past four months. I’ve met some amazing people along the way as well. My decision to move to Adrian and serve the community as publisher of The Daily Telegram was quite possibly the best personal and professional decision I’ve ever made. Professionally, I see tremendous opportunity to connect with community leaders to help shape and mold the revitalization in Adrian. Specifically, that includes continued support of downtown development and economic growth vital to the community’s longevity and prosperity. I am excited to continue to engage with our print and online readers to build the best product, full of rich content, covering what’s important to Lenawee County residents. For 122 years, The Daily Telegram has evolved into the product it is today. It’s my professional responsibility to ensure that evolution continues to support the equity and engagement that The Daily Telegram has developed in Lenawee County. Personally, I love music. It’s a passion of mine. I also love the arts. The Croswell Opera House and the Adrian Symphony Orchestra are two entities that caught my eye before taking residency in downtown Adrian. Both organizations are rich in history and culture, and bring a world of art and entertainment to a deserving stage. It wasn’t until I settled that I also realized the importance of the festivals that grace this community, and how events like Art-A-Licious work in harmony with everything that brought me to Adrian. On behalf of The Daily Telegram, I am proud to support Art-ALicious. Our partnership represents two brands, young and old, combining forces to support artists and community growth. Personally, I can’t wait to check out the bands and peruse the exhibits. It’s the best of all worlds.
