his year’s Art-A-Licious T-shirt features a rendering of the West Maumee Trading Company building by Tecumseh artist Pat Ducat Bogusz, who is one of the artists selected for this year’s ArtPrize competition in Grand Rapids. Pat’s art encompasses a wide array of media including graphite, pen and ink, linocuts, sculpture, and mixed media. Her entry in this year’s ArtPrize is a work titled “Encautum Motus,” or “Ink Movement.” It started as a creative experiment in form and motion of hand-drawn open or solid circles of varying sizes. It began as one board and morphed into 12 unified boards of movement across space. (You can see the piece at www.artprize.org/ pat-ducat-bogusz, or at Cathedral Square, 360 Division Ave. S. in Grand Rapids, through the end of ArtPrize on October 6.) Pat has painted numerous landmarks in downtown Adrian and other parts of Lenawee County, and the Art-A-Licious committee is pleased to have her image of the historic West Maumee Trading Company building representing Art-A-Licious as this year’s T-shirt image. Past Art-A-Licious T-shirt designs have featured Chaloner & Co., the Croswell Opera House, Copeland Furniture, the old fire station, and the “Strings” sculpture on the north side of City Hall.

Shopping tips for art-fair buyers o you’re heading to Art-A-Licious in search of that special something. Maybe there’s a spot on your living room wall that’s just begging to be filled, or maybe you need that perfect gift for an upcoming birthday or anniversary. How do you make the most of your trip? Here are a few ideas.

S

COME PREPARED.

ASK QUESTIONS.

If there’s a specific place in your home that you’re shopping for, try taking a picture of it with your phone before you come to the festival. If you’re looking for wall art, measurements help too!

If you like an artist’s style but don’t see the perfect piece right away, they may have another piece in inventory that’s just what you’re looking for — or you may even be able to commission a custom work.

ART ISN’T JUST FOR WALLS!

CHOOSE ART THAT MAKES YOU HAPPY.

You’ll find all kinds of work at an art fair. A ceramic bowl or vase might be the perfect accent for your end table, or a stained glass hanging might look gorgeous in your kitchen window. Art can even be something you wear!

You don’t have to be an expert or an art critic to know what you like. It’s your home — buy what looks good to you!

Get creative! Check out the Art-A-Licious pottery tent and other hands-on activities A rt-A-Licious believes that art is for everyone, not just professionals! The seventh annual Art-A-Licious festival offers lots of opportunities for kids and adults alike to stretch their creative muscles. Have you ever watched a potter using a throwing wheel and thought it looked like fun? At the always-popular Throwing Tent (pictured at left), you can give it a try for yourself. The tent is staffed by volunteers from the Adrian College Art and Design

Department and from the college’s Community Clay program. The Youth Art Tent, staffed by Adrian College art education students and art teachers from Lenawee County schools, gives the younger set a chance to make their own artwork to take home. Kids can also take part in sidewalk chalk art at designated spots. And what about music? Come to the Adrian Symphony Orchestra tent, where

volunteers will be on hand to give visitors an introduction to playing a musical instrument. Meanwhile, other organizations will offer a variety of art activities along Nonprofit Row. The Adrian Public Library will provide another chance to get creative by building things at its Lego station, and the Music Moves Me program, a partnership between the library and the symphony taking place at 11 a.m. Saturday, will provide an interactive music experience for younger kids.

Cynthia Burghardt Jewelry with marbles • Toledo, Ohio It all began when I was getting ready to send my son off to college.
