Strategic Partnership Programme Erasmus+ 2017-2020
Open Science Schooling

Primary School with Bilingual Classes No. 2 in Ĺ ukĂłw has been running another innovative Erasmus + international project since September 2017 called Open Science Schooling. The goal of the project is, (among others) to engage students in activities related to broadly understood science or seeking science in the local environment. The project is coordinated by the University of Eastern Finland, and a total of 9 partners participate in the project. On May 3-4, 2018, all partners together with the youth met in Catalonia to summarize the first stage of the project, strengthen ties between youth and teachers and to plan activities for another year. Agnieszka Czerska-Pawlak and school coordinator Artur Baranowski went with the youth. Another meeting will take place in October in Portugal.
Day one - Thursday, May 3rd The meeting took place in the charming city of Gironella in Catalonia.
On the first morning in the conference room of the local library there were presentations presenting the results of completed tasks. Talking in English to such a large international group was a bit stressful for us, especially since we were the first student team (in a few cases of other teams, it was the teachers who made the presentation). The speech attracted interest.
Our additional advantage was the handing over to all partners of the records with film recordings brought from Poland, in which Mr. Dariusz Nikiel helped us a lot.
Then we started (with the help of our supervisors) work in international groups.
We learned the definitions of science and looked for situations in which learning is present in everyday life, work and other activities.
We also talked about our passions and interests. Despite the slight difficulties in communicating, we spent nice and busy hours together.
In the late afternoon we went down the picturesque serpentine hill to the Queralt chain to the de Queralt sanctuary.
In a strong wind, we climbed the summit, where the Cova de la Troballa chapel made a special impression on us, where the building was connected to the cave. From viewing terraces at an altitude of 1,100 m a.s.l. we admired the fantastic landscape of the valleys. This day gave us many impressions.

Day two - Friday May 4th After a tasty breakfast on May 4th at Catalan families we went to classes at the Polytechnic of Catalonia in Manresa. In the audiovisual studio we learned the secrets of obtaining the best quality recordings during interviews. One of the lecturers told us - demonstrating the appropriate devices and equipment - about the ways of multi-point lighting, sound quality parameters, types of microphones and cameras, the principles of image composition, how to conduct a conversation.
Then in national groups - on the basis of questions prepared in English (there were over 20) - we assumed the roles of interviewers and answering the questions asked. The conversation was recorded using professional audiovisual equipment. The task was not
particularly difficult for us, because in Poland we had the opportunity to interview. After a break, we went to the chemical laboratory, where we performed various types of experiments using the available equipment and chemicals. Later in the IT lab we gained knowledge about programming and creating bots, i.e. automatic assistants. The last stage of this part of the classes was an international discussion about the exercises performed.
During the dinner we met new, unknown to us flavors of Spanish cuisine. After returning to the university, we carried out further tasks related to the project's slogan - Open Science Schooling, including communicating using WhatsApp. The next item on the program was a visit to the local geological museum. We were particularly interested
in showcases illustrating the use of various metals in everyday objects. An award was also given to the student from Spain, whose artistic work won the international art competition for participants for the project logo.
The last element of this busy and interesting day were chemical shows. They were fascinating, we saw many intriguing experiments, e.g. one of the spectators (the object of the experiment) kept a flame on the hair, which, however, did not violate the hairstyle in any way.
Tired and satisfied, we went for a long dinner consisting of, among others from numerous snacks - tapas - and then overnight to your families.
Although the meeting was short, it was very intense and very useful for us. We are looking forward to the next meeting with our partners in Portugal.
