Envision

With the generous donations from the Lewis Group of Companies and Reggie King from Young Homes, and raffles, contests, and help from local businesses such as Wells Fargo and Applebee’s, our message and vision are reaching a growing number of people. To date, we have received nearly $15 million in private funding, which is being spent on additions such as expanded literature stacks, the formation of literacy classes, and state-of-the-art Internet terminals, to name a few.

While we eagerly anticipate the opening of the Lewis Library and Technology Center in the spring of 2008, there is still much to be done. In this Annual Report, we will celebrate how far we have come and get a glimpse of the exciting events and opportunities that await us before the opening of the Library in 2008. On behalf of the Fontana Library Foundation and the City of Fontana, I’d like to sincerely thank all of the committee members, donors, staff and volunteers who have worked tirelessly on the capital campaign to support the Library. Without their commitment, generosity, and vision we would not be where we are today – on the verge of meeting our $20 million goal and opening the much awaited Lewis Library and Technology Center.

We are celebrating a new era in the city of Fontana – an era of revitalization and unprecedented growth. Fiscal year 20062007 shaped up to be quite an exciting year for the City of Fontana and quite a productive one for the Fontana Library Foundation. Thanks to the unending support of individuals, organizations and businesses in our community, we have made leaps and bounds in our journey to fund and build Fontana’s new library, which will be the first building of major significance in Fontana’s new Civic Center.

Milestones

What a difference a year makes! Thanks to the ongoing efforts and support from both the Fontana Library Foundation and donations from the community, the new library is nearing completion in both construction and in fundraising. The strides we have made over the past year are truly a cause for celebration, and we are on target for both the opening of the Lewis Library and Technology Center in the spring of 2008 and our fundraising goal of $20 million. Many exciting developments have taken place over the past 12 months. First and foremost was the naming of Fontana’s new library. In appreciation of the Lewis Group of Companies’ generous contribution of $5 million to the campaign fund, the library has officially been named the Lewis Library and Technology Center. Mayor Mark Nuaimi announced the Lewis donation at Fontana’s 5th Annual Mayor’s Gala on March 31. Randall Lewis, Executive Vice President for the Lewis Operating Corp. explains the reason for his company’s spirit of giving: “Our motivation to support the Fontana Library project is simple– we strive to better the communities in which we live and do business. As active business and community members in the Fontana Region, we feel it is important to give back, and we are particularly interested in supporting outreach programs that enhance education...We are privileged to be able to offer support to this project that will clearly be an invaluable resource for our families, schools, and businesses.” In the wake of the excitement generated by the naming of the Lewis Library and Technology Center, the hard working builders of the Library also had a reason to celebrate– the completion of the construction’s highest point. On May 11, this monumental achievement was commemorated with a Topping Off Ceremony. This symbolic tradition not only celebrated the completion of the Lewis Library’s highest point in construction, but was held to pay homage to the workers and contributors who have supported the Library since the campaign’s onset. The Library’s key stake holders were invited to sign the last steel beam, which symbolized the building’s literal “reaching of the sky.” The month of June was an equally eventful month for the Fontana Library Foundation. The children’s section of the library, an impressive section which boasts, was officially named after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Like its namesake, the Children’s Library will promote diversity and community, all while fostering children’s passions and dreams. As Chairman Paul Biane stated, “The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Children's Library, will be a place where children can learn and let their imaginations soar.” On June 18, the Fontana Community Foundation held a golf classic at the Red Hill Country Club in Rancho Cucamonga, in an effort to raise funds for the Children’s Library. Spearheaded by Fontana City Councilmember Acquanetta Warren and hosted by NFL all pro running back Greg Bell, the event raised nearly $280,000 for its cause. In total, the capital campaign attracted over 280 donors and $13, 642,831.25 for fiscal year 2006-2007.

In the News Women’s Role in Construction

Young Homes Donation

Not only did we break ground in construction this year, but we also broke through a number of gender-based barriers. The Fontana Library Foundation is pleased to announce that three tenacious and hardworking women have done their part in the daunting task of the physical building of the Lewis Library and Technology Center. Although Joanna Heinrich aptly states, “It has taken me fifteen years to get where some men it would take three or four years maximum,” she has felt a great sense of personal satisfaction serving as senior project manager, alongside Architect Kate Diamond and Construction Manager Anet Willingham.

This has been quite a year for generous donations. Reggie King donated $1.5 million on behalf of Young Homes. As Kathleen Fariss, Director of Development stated, “The donation from Young Homes is a generous response to our call to participate, and serves as an important example to other business and community leaders of the incredible impact they can have in supporting the lifelong learning goals of our residents.” King, who serves as the Chief Financial Officer of Young Homes responds, “We are pleased to have this role supporting a better Fontana.”

Golf Tournament “Read a Book At Home” Ball The Fontana Library Foundation conducted a fundraising event and no one showed up. They all stayed at home – which was exactly the plan. The “Read a Book at Home Ball” asked Fontana residents to stay home and curl up with a good book. And, to benefit the Library, the Foundation asked those staying at home to read to donate to the Library what they might have spent on a festive night out. “What we really wanted to do was to allow people an opportunity to participate without having to spend a lot of money,” said Kathleen Fairss, Director of Development.

Fontana Councilmember Acquanetta Warren, along with Captain Rodney Jones of the Fontana Police Department, decided to host a golf tournament at the Red Hill Country Club to benefit the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Children’s Library. The tournament was held on June 18, attracted nearly 150 golfers, and raised over $290,000. “The average child under age 14 doesn’t know how important Dr. King was to our society,” said Warren. She envisions the library as a gathering place where children of all races learn together, play together, and become friends together. A place where they can all get along, as Dr. King once dreamed.

Fontana’s Biggest Losers (Employees) In the spirit of celebrating “healthy competition,” the Fontana Library Foundation and Healthy Fontana Program teamed up this year to help get our into shape. In their competition, titled “Who will be Fontana’s Biggest Loser” (based on NBC’s popular prime time show “The Biggest Loser”) 91 of Fontana, including a number of Lewis Library employees, set out to see who could most increase their stamina while decreasing their waistlines. Each participant donated $20 at the onset, with 50% going to the Lewis Library and Technology Center, and the remaining half serving as prize money to the female and male contestant who lost the largest percentage of weight during the eight week competition.

Mayor’s Gala The 5th Annual Mayor’s Gala was held this spring on March 31, 2007. The black tie event was held at the Paul Biane Pavilion on Filbert Avenue in Fontana, and a great deal of money was raised for the library which was, also that evening, officially named the Lewis Library and Technology Center. This honor was bestowed by Fontana Mayor Mark Nuami, in recognition of the Lewis Company’s generous gift of $5 million to the Fontana Library Foundation.

4th of July Raffle Congratulations go out to Jose Rodriquez, Nancy Flores, and Kathy Jablonsky who participated in the Fontana Library Foundation’s 4th of July Raffle, and won the prizes of a Kenny Bartram Suzuki RM250, a Fontana street named in her honor, and a four hour helicopter ride above our city, respectively.

Applebees On July 26, 2007, Fontana’s local Applebee’s restaurant changed its motto from “Eating Good in the Neighborhood” to “Eating Good FOR Your Neighborhood!” The restaurant, located at 16867 Sierra Lakes Parkway, donated 15% of coupon carrying diners’ bills to the Lewis Library and Technology’ Center’s “Future Leaders of Tomorrow” campaign.

A Look at Tomorrow The 2007-2008 year is obviously a year to which we are all looking forward as it marks the opening of the Lewis Library and Technology Center. Scheduled for April 2008, the Grand Opening is just on the horizon and promises a number of public and private opening celebration events that are sure to be “grand” indeed. Ribbon cuttings, behind-the-scene tours, and live entertainment are just a few of the wonderful things in store for the community during the first week the Library is open. While we have the Grand Opening to look forward to, there is still work to be done to wrap up the capital campaign and meet the $20 million goal. The 6th Annual Mayor’s Gala will be held in the spring and will once again contribute proceeds to the Fontana Library Foundation. As well, the Foundation will be conducting a direct mail campaign geared toward Fontana community residents and another geared toward Fontana businesses. Given the Lewis Library and Technology Center will be an invaluable resource for all of our families and businesses, we want to give everyone the opportunity to contribute to the funding of the Library and to be part of this historic event. After the Library opens, the Foundation’s mission to raise awareness and funds will continue, and other fundraising events like an annual giving campaign, kid’s read-a-thon, and television/radio pledge drive are in the works. We look forward to working with you, before and after the Library opens, to ensure our community has access to the best lifelong learning programs and resources.
