A WINDOW on Tomorrow For years, the small, 13,000-square-foot County branch library on Emerald Avenue served the residents of Fontana adequately. But, when residential development started to take off in the mid-1990s, the little library found it was too small and under-equipped to meet the needs of the growing community. Today, with a patron base of over 200,000, it is apparent that a modern, more technologically advanced library is necessary to enhance personal, professional, recreational and lifelong learning goals. The new regional Fontana Library and Resource/Technology Center will be the first significant new building in the Fontana Civic Center. Set in the new civic center park, the Library represents the new Fontana – proud of its past but looking toward the future. The community is looking to this regional Library to establish a new civic image for the City as well as provide a stimulus for the revitalization of the historic downtown. The Library will fulfill the community’s desire for improved library services as well as establish an icon for a maturing and growing City.

The new Library will be a place for all generations, from the youngest child coming with his mother to a story-telling program, to the young student researching a school paper on the Internet, to an adult coming to explore new career opportunities, to a senior enjoying a newspaper in her native language.
The Library will feature: • New book shelving, reading areas and a children’s library • An expanded collection to exceed 142,000 items, including 7,850 reference, media, and periodical items • Electronic databases, software applications, remote access to online informational resources and Internet access • Homework clubs and a homework center • Spanish language and homework materials • A computer technology support and training center • A literacy center with tutoring programs • A career center • 203 public use computer work stations including 25 Spanish language computers • Community meeting rooms and a 330-seat auditorium for meetings, lectures and special presentations • A bookstore and coffee bar • An increased library staff of friendly, helpful and knowledgeable people
BLUEPRINTS for Success With its landmark clock tower, the Fontana Library will set the standard for design of all future civic center projects and downtown structures. This new Library will be an important architectural milestone, celebrating Fontana’s past, present and future.

The design of the Library is both traditional and contemporary, capturing the warmth and detail of the Spanish Mission architecture of old California with new materials, up-to-date construction methods and innovative detailing expressive of the best of modern California. The traditional is expressed in the simple, solid building masses with gable-ended, pitched Spanish tile roofs, the white

stucco walls punctuated by deeply recessed windows with traditionally detailed surroundings, and the terra-cotta colored paving accented by hand-painted Spanish tile risers. The modern is expressed in the pared-down simplicity of the clean plaster masses, the distinctive large-scale, two-story curtain-walled bay windows, and the unique metal screens that define the clock tower enclosure, the front door facade and the rotunda shading screen. As patrons enter, they will notice a beautiful plaza with a fountain. An attractive rotunda overlooking Sierra Avenue will serve as a quiet reading area.

Part of the Very FOUNDATION The Library is projected to cost approximately $45 million when fully developed and equipped. While both the City of Fontana and the County of San Bernardino have been working hard to procure funds, private contributions are still needed to help offset construction costs and provide service and program enhancements to the new Library. To meet this need, the Fontana Library Foundation has launched a major capital campaign with the goal of raising $20 million.
