exposition à Paris
Le département Art Contemporain Africain d’Artcurial présente du 28 février au 12 mars, en partenariat avec la Gallery OOA, Only When I’m Dreaming , la première exposition exclusive de l’artiste Megan Gabrielle Harris à Paris. Déjà représentée à Miami, Chicago, Londres ou encore New-York, cette artiste afro-surréaliste émergente s’inscrit dans le mouvement « Escapism » qui évoque l’échappée, le voyage. Elle réalise ainsi des paysages fantasmés et des portraits de femmes noires, inspirés par le rêve et les formes de la nature.
Pour sa première présentation à Paris, Megan Gabrielle Harris a créé douze acryliques sur toiles inédites spécialement pour cette exposition chez Artcurial. Inspirée par le titre de l’album Only When I’m Dreaming de la chanteuse de soul Minnie Riperton que Megan écoute lorsqu’elle créé ses œuvres, cette nouvelle série très personnelle puise son inspiration dans les expériences de vie de l’artiste et dans ses états oniriques.
Her first exhibition in Paris
The Contemporary African Art department at Artcurial will present, from February 28th to March 12th, in partnership with OOA Gallery, Only When I’m Dreaming, the first exclusive exhibition of artist Megan Gabrielle Harris in Paris. Already presented in Miami, Chicago, London, and New York, this emerging Afro-surrealist artist is part of the “Escapism” movement, which explores themes of escape and travel. She creates fantastical landscapes and portraits of black women, inspired by dreams and the forms of nature.
For her debut exhibition in Paris, Megan Gabrielle Harris has created twelve exclusive acrylic paintings on canvas, specially conceived for this show at Artcurial. Inspired by the album Only When I’m Dreaming by soul singer Minnie Riperton – her soundtrack while painting – this deeply personal series reflects the artist’s life experiences and dreamlike visions.

Une artiste californienne émergente
Megan Gabrielle Harris est une artiste afro-américaine, issue de la diaspora nigériane, née en 1990 à Sacramento. Peintre, photographe et mannequin, elle crée des paysages oniriques, pastels et enchanteurs, dans lesquels des femmes noires s’abandonnent à un moment contemplatif. Ses toiles sont une invitation à l’évasion, inspirées des œuvres de son père Thomas Harris, ou encore de ses propres voyages. Megan Gabrielle Harris prône à travers son art une vie douce, le soin de soi et le pouvoir des rêves comme échappatoire à des réalités douloureuses.
Déjà exposée à New York par la De Buck Gallery lors d’une exposition solo en 2022, et présentée dans des foires à Miami, Chicago, Londres ou Madrid, Megan Gabrielle Harris est une figure de plus en plus recherchée par les collectionneurs d’art africain contemporain. Sa pluridisciplinarité l’a également amenée à collaborer avec des marques de prestige telles que Nike, Bergdorf Goodman ou Veuve Clicquot.
An emerging californian artist
Megan Gabrielle Harris is an Afro-American artist of Nigerian descent, born in 1990 in Sacramento. Painter, photographer, and model, she creates dreamlike, pastel-hued, and enchanting landscapes where Black women surrender to moments of contemplation. Her paintings are an invitation to escape, inspired by the works of her father, Thomas Harris, and her own travels. Through her art, Megan Gabrielle Harris advocates gentle living, self-care and the power of dreams as a getaway from painful realities.
Previously showcased in a solo exhibition at De Buck Gallery in New York in 2022 and featured at art fairs in Miami, Chicago, London, and Madrid, Megan Gabrielle Harris is increasingly sought after by collectors of contemporary African art. Her multidisciplinary approach has also led to collaborations with prestigious brands such as Nike, Bergdorf Goodman, and Veuve Clicquot.
U ne série d’œuvres inédites
Très personnelles, ces nouvelles pièces puisent leur inspiration dans les expériences de vie de l’artiste et dans ses états contemplatifs, mettant en avant le pouvoir de projection et l’acceptation à la fois de la lumière et de l’obscurité. Des fenêtres et des clairières sombres ouvrent sur des havres de paix illuminés. Un kaléidoscope de teintes pastels douces habille ces paysages de rêve, transportant les spectateurs de ses œuvres dans un royaume enchanté d’éléments surréalistes et méditatifs sans fin. Ses muses, aussi tranquilles que les lieux idylliques où elles se trouvent, sont souvent vêtues de robes et de peignoirs de soie qui coulent aussi librement que les lacs et les vallées lointains qu’elles contemplent paisiblement.
Lors de la création de ces œuvres, l’artiste a connu certaines pertes et la fin de certaines relations. Ces expériences ont éveillé en elle un désir d’utiliser différents points de vue (portes, fenêtres, etc.) comme des cadres ou des portails afin d’ouvrir de nouveaux horizons de guérison. Enfin, Megan Gabrielle Harris replace la figure noire féminine au centre de son travail : elle leur offre un univers apaisé où elles naviguent et échappent aux contraintes sociétales, en créant un espace sûr où elles peuvent s’affirmer sans complexe. À travers son art, elle cherche à dépeindre des femmes indépendantes et puissantes, offrant une manifestation visuelle de ses espoirs pour les femmes de vivre librement.
A series of exclusive works
Deeply personal, these new pieces draw inspiration from the artist’s life experiences and contemplative states, highlighting the power of projection and the acceptance of both light and darkness. Dark clearings and window-like openings reveal illuminated havens of peace. A kaleidoscope of soft pastel tones envelops these dreamlike landscapes, transporting viewers into an enchanting realm of endless surreal and meditative elements. Her muses, as serene as the idyllic settings they inhabit, are often draped in flowing silk robes and dressing gowns, mirroring the gentle movement of distant lakes and valleys they gaze upon in quiet reflection.
While creating these works, the artist experienced certain losses and the end of certain relationships. These experiences awakened in her a desire to use different viewpoints (doors, windows, etc.) as frames or portals to open new horizons of healing.
Finally, Megan Gabrielle Harris puts the black female figure back at the center of her work: she offers them a soothed universe where they can navigate and escape societal constraints, creating a safe space where they can assert themselves without complexes. Through her art, she seeks to depict independent, powerful women, offering a visual manifestation of her hopes for women to live freely.

Art Contemporain Africain
Pionnière dans cette spécialité, Artcurial organise à Paris dès 2010 la première vente dédiée à la création contemporaine africaine avec 65 artistes représentant 24 nationalités.
En 2017, la maison décide de présenter, dans le cadre de ses ventes à Marrakech, la vacation d’art contemporain africain intitulée African Spirit profitant du dynamisme de la ville qui attire les collectionneurs internationaux. Une nouvelle édition en 2018 permet au département d’établir en deux ans pas moins de 12 records du monde pour des artistes tel que Bodys Isek Kingelez, Malick Sidibé ou encore Seydou Keïta. Depuis 2019, Artcurial organise une à deux ventes par an à La Mamounia à Marrakech, avec la volonté de présenter des œuvres de qualité d’artistes confirmés et de jeunes talents.
Le département poursuit en parallèle son développement à Paris, en organisant des ventes biannuelles en live ainsi que des ventes online, qui lui permettent de faire découvrir davantage aux amateurs et collectionneurs cet art pour lequel la visibilité et l’engouement ne font que grandir.

Contemporary African Art Department
