WELCOME BANNERS
It’s funny to see which are still relevant now
Kal was ready to take it all in see the differences between a comic convention and a book convention. There were still security, comic fans, Disney characters, and reminders to not inappropriately touch cosplayers, but there were also giant empty spaces in the basement and gray carpeting on the Show Flow.
Girls on Vinyl
Jojo’s Guide seemed as unlikely to be read in my house as Lumberjanes, but, about the time I was fi nally pulling stills for this issue, Betty became a huge Jojo Siwa fan. Meanwhile, I wanted to be sure to get a picture that day of She Persisted but don’t know if Betty will ever read that. (She has heard I Dissent.)
Like any convention we’ve been to before, Waldo was everywhere—this time as cut outs.
Hidden Fires
I didn’t notice Little Fires Everywhere until I was scanning video clips to use for still frames. I actually haven’t seen the show or read the book, but everyone seems to recommend the second novel by Celeste Ng that was released in September 2017. I think it’s a good display of how removed Kal and I are from what’s making news in book publishing that we walked past all her signs without much consideration for how one day in the near future everyone we know would be talking about Shaker Heights, Ohio, and the Hulu adaptation. —MV
