ART DEPARTMENT WEEKLY LUIS VEGA CHIEF CONTENT OFFICER MADELINE STRUM MANAGING EDITOR COVER MADELINE STRUM PHOTOGRAPHY

WE MADE IT ADW hits the century mark. I remember the humble beginnings of this little publication. It started out as a little art department joke and quickly grew into one of the best experiences I’ve ever had in my long career in publishing. It became so much more than just an art project and started to unite the entire publishing team at Niche. As word of mouth grew, we started to receive contributions from literally every part of the company. Art contributed from day one, it was the little magazine which gave us a voice. Us artists like to think we are so much more than just our beautiful creations. We have voices as well, and ADW proved that. Shortly thereafter, we started to receive contributions from the copy and facts departments, the managing editors jumped in, IT wanted in, even our friends in sales contributed. Literally contributions from all over the company. It was exhilarating. Everyone looked forward to the Dubbs on Friday afternoon. The best part is that ADW was launched in the thick of Hamptons season. Anyone at Niche can tell you, Hamptons season is a beast. The fact that we were taking on extra work to create a fun little magazine was a testament to our camaraderie. Still to this day, my time at Niche is some of my

favorite in publishing. It legitimately reignited my passion for publishing. As we all went our separate ways (Olga was the first to leave, closely followed by me) it became harder and harder to produce ADW. The stories of a shared workplace were missing. Things would happen in my office and I would think “Wow, that’s dubbs-worthy” but not have anyone to really share it with. Our schedule became more and more sporadic. As the years passed, ADW seemed to fall by the wayside. Earlier this year, before the nation was in a lockdown, Madeline decided to invest her time in the Dubbs. I like to say we have put out more issues this year than at any other time since the first year, but what I should really say is Madeline has put out more issues. ADW stands as a testament to her hard work and dedication, just like it originally started with the hard work and dedication of an over-worked underpaid group of designers who really liked each others’ company. Long live ADW!

IT’S ALL YOURS The other day I decided to clip back vines coming from who knows where. As I reached out to untangle one string from a sunflower, I realized there was a giant praying mantis perched upside down. The only one I’d ever seen before was dead on our steps, like maybe a cat left it as a gift. For four days I watched the praying mantis. I was also watching my one pumpkin. Then I realized it looked like something had been eating it. I watered the plants. Bug covered the now wet pumpkin. Tinier bugs cover the blossoms. Meanwhile, I did buy the bulbs from Issue 99 but ran out of space in pots, so I planted two bulbs in the ground. An animal dug them up immediately. —MV

last week, luis showed everyone a picture he had pencilled and his wife inked. this week, he shows the reverse. Below is an image his wife pencilled and he in turn inked.

i love sweater vests. my nearly 15-year love affair has provided me with a wealth of quotes from people who do not share the love.

“Aren’t you hot in that” “Dude, sweater vests aren’t cool” “Everytime I see you, you’re wearing a sweater vest” “Do you have one for every day” “I thought only gay men wore those” “We used to have a lesbian who worked here who would wear sweater vests all the time”

UNIFORM The favorite hat did have to be retired, but this is still basically the LV uniform as seen in Issue 4 and Issue 12. I didn’t remember the part where everyone at Niche was so opposed to sweater vests. Now that pandemic has eliminated any need to wear pants during hot weather, this also serves as Exhibits A and B for why LV has no interest in returning to an office building. Will he wear sweater vests around the house? Already happened. “If there was an action figure of me, it would be wearing a sweater vest,” he says. “That’s my jam.” —MV

MAKING SURE VOTES COUNT After sharing a post about how people should and can be more involved in improving conditions during the 2020 general election, I decided I should work the polls. My application was approved, but I didn’t see any updates on training. I figured it was done and whatever. It’s all volunteer anyway? Oh, no, the state pays you. (h Issue I was hoping ice: 100 would be the end off ce aare of a “where they now” series, but it sp Vega a s a c hasn’t been a good year for meeting up. Picture it—like a conventions issue but for the original Dubbs crew. Career changes, parenthood, artistic ventures... Some of the original contributors and readers took a survey to see what they remember and how they’re doing now. Those answers appear throughout the section. A few wrote and sent us pictures. Look for what they shared farther into the issue! Mostly we’re celebrating how we got to be 100. —MV I like rearranging furniture. Take what you have and make the most of it, right? Here are the stages of metamorphosis at the Dinosaur Girly Studio s.

March 2007 Third bedroom houses my old PC and LV’s old Smurf on one skinny desk.

Jan 2008 A new large desk is added to hold three—yes, three—printers (and a cat). A G4 is added to the mix. April 2008 Now that two of us will be using the office, both the G4 and G3 are operatio nal. Plus a laptop. And two cats. June 2008 I decide two chairs in one corner is too ridiculous. I force LV to rearrange the room with me. June 2008 Still not happy, I Hulk out and move the vanity and dresser. Then I set up a card table to expand LV’s space.

may 2nd was Free comic Book day all over the country. stores nationwide were giving away (you guessed it) free comic books. It has become an annual tradition for meg and I to hit the city early and go to multiple comic stores. after getting a late start to the day we went to the first shop and had relatively disappointing results. after running a few errands we decided to hit Jim hanley’s universe where much to our suprise was comic great Joe staton who graciously drew the above picture of supergirl (megan’s fave character) for megan. needeless to say, she was thrilled.

ORIGINS WITH AMY The origins of the phrase TK in publishing to Come is a printing and journalism reference abbreviated “tk.â€? it is used to signify additional material will be added at a later date. it is important to note that tk is an intentional misspelling designed to catch the eye (and also to be caught by computer software spell check programs.) occasionally a copyeditor may mistakenly allow an article to be published with a stray tk intact, which is a source for much embarrassment and ridicule in the newsroom. the Chicago Manual of Style publishers describe the practice of using tk as imprecise. “it’s best to be more straightforward and specific. for example, use bullets or boldface zeros (••• or 000) to stand in for page numbers that cannot be determined until a manuscript is paginated as a book. for items like missing figures, describe exactly what’s missing. in electronic environments, you have recourse to comment features—like the syntax of sgml, which allows for descriptive instructions that will not interfere with the final version of a document. make sure that whatever you do stops the project in its tracks at some point before publication.â€? however, the Chicago Manual of Style is geared for book publishers, and tk is much more prevalent in the magazine world than in the book world. tk may be more useful in the magazine world because magazines consist of a greater variety of heterogeneous forms of copy written and edited by a larger number of people under tighter deadlines. Under those conditions, it is more natural and useful for participants to stick tk in “unthinkinglyâ€? to save time. in the magazine world, it is common for even important factual details not to be nailed down until quite late in the process, even as the magazine is being typeset. in the book world, such matters are always decided well before the manuscript reaches the proof stage. so it’s reasonable for the CMOS to look askance at tk—even as magazine employees find it very useful to be able to write a phrase like “...went to university tk years ago...â€? without having to puzzle out what form that tk should take (dots or zeroes?), full in the knowledge that everybody involved in the process knows what is meant—that further work is needed.

ARTISTS WE LOVE: JIM LEE We made our way from Allred to Kirby before dropping the feature. Luis brings it back

I

I was raised on a steady diet of comic book artistic legends. John Byrne, Frank Miller, George Perez, Neal Adams, and Walt Simonson were early favorites of mine. As I became a teenager in the late ’80s and started to develop tastes of my own, I instantly gravitated to a new young dynamic penciller who was taking the Marvel world by storm—Jim Lee. Jim Lee quickly became my favorite penciller. It didn’t matter what title he was on, I scooped it up. Alpha Flight and Punisher War Journal made me first take notice, but he flipped the comics world on its side when he took over the X-Men. He became a superstar in the house of X. Even though Lee grew up a comic book fan, he was studying medicine at Princeton (like his father) before he took an art class in 1986 that reignited his love of art and the trajectory of the young Korean born star was changed. Lee worked the convention circuit in hopes of showing his burgeoning skills to comic publishers. Met with initial negative feedback, he kept working until getting his big break from Archie Goodwin at Marvel Lee worked on perfecting his craft for three years on Alpha Flight (the Canadian super-team created by John Byrne) before taking over the X-Men in 1989. When Lee took over the X-Men, he moved to New York City to be closer to the Marvel offices. He would go in every day to pencil his comics. There he could see all the other work being delivered by other artists. By becoming a bit of a chameleon, he was able to blend his style with that of some of his comic contemporaries (Liefeld, McFarlane, Silvestri, Lim, etc.) to create a style all his own, blending the

best of everything. He became a sort of comic art Voltron. Lee’s career trajectory continued to rise as he left Marvel for the creatorowned pastures of Image comics. There he launched Wild C.A.T.s where its success allowed him to fund his own WildStorm Productions. While the head of Wildstorm, he quickly became an insane judge of talent and a top recruiter. He discovered the likes of Travis Charest, Dustin Nguyen, and J.Scott Campbell to name a few and talked Alan Moore into creating a series of new comics (Promethea and Top 10). Wildstorm went

on to become one of the best selling studios under the Image umbrella. So much so that Lee packaged WildStorm, broke away from Image, and sold his entire company to DC. Selling WildStorm to DC led to the current leg of Lee’s long career in comics as he is the current Chief Creative Officer. While I will always think of him as the cross-hatching genius with brilliant linework and some of the most dynamic poses in comics, it’s hard to not be impressed by his business savvy and his ability to reinvent himself. A true inspiration to me and absolutely an artist I love.

The first Alpha Flight piece made me take notice (I’ve always loved the Guardian’s costume) which led to me follow Lee over to Punisher. The top piece is from Superman Unchained, Lee’s 12-issue collaboration with Scott Snyder.

SUPER SUPPLIES

A detail of Heisenberg to show the increased amount of shading and inked details that didn’t happen when ADW was in its infancy.

For as long as I can remember, my art materials have consisted of Dixon Ticonderoga No. 2 and No. 3 pencils and Sharpies in multiple sizes. Basically, anything my brother could get for free that I could use not only in school but for my personal art. For years this was fine, I continued to produce art I was (relatively) happy with. As I started to go to various comic conventions, though, I was exposed to the different tools artists use. Sharpies generally seem to be used for signing or a quick sketch, but, when they were stationed at Artist Alley, a whole new tool box appeared. It was Artist Alley where I first discovered Micron markers. I saw Mahmud Asrar using them and quickly struck up a conversation. He raved about them and told me all about the different weights. I quickly ordered some from Amazon when I got home. I believe the first piece I ever used them on was a portrait of Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Negan. My world had changed. I was instantly obsessed with how thin and accurate the lines are. Microns have been a staple of my artwork ever since that day. Even though I had successfully incorporated the Microns, I was still happily using Sharpies to fill in my big fields of black. As anyone who has worked with Sharpies knows, their blacks can be uneven and inconsistent. While watching Mauricet sketch Harley Quinn at the DC booth, I noticed him using Pentel brush pens. The large fields of black were consistent and fluid. I was completely blown away. Mauricet was more than happy to tell me about them. Another Amazon purchase led to Pentel brushes being added into the mix of my art supplies. I also bought a series of gray pentels but have yet to break into them... hopefully soon. All of which leads to my current pieces of art. I think the linework on my new pieces is so much better than those in the past. The better supplies have filled me with a confidence I never had before. I’m happy to say I think the pieces I put together over the past two years are some of my favorites. To come full circle, even though the inks may have changed, I have a slavish devotion to my trusty Dixon Ticonderogas. They are the one constant in my art I don’t ever see myself moving away from. —LV

used to signify additional material will be added at a later date. it is important to note that tk is an intentional misspelling designed to catch the eye (and also to be caught by computer software spell check programs.) occasionally a copyeditor may mistakenly allow an article to be published with a stray tk intact, which is a source for much embarrassment and ridicule in the newsroom. the Chicago Manual of Style publishers describe the practice of using did you know that dolphins are the tk as imprecise. “it’s bestwe to be more straightforward specific.issues for only The good things forgot were in theand original ofother themammals Dubbsthat have sex example, use bullets or boldface zeros (••• or 000) to stand in for page for enjoyment... no wonder that numbers that cannot be determined until a manuscript is paginated as dolphin is smiling! a book. for items like missing figures, describe exactly what’s missing. in VICKY’S TIP OF THE WEEK electronic environments, you have recourse to comment features—like the syntax of sgml, which allows for descriptive instructions that will not interfere with the final version of a document. make sure that whatever you do stops the project in its tracks at some point before publication.” vicky’s summer tips however, the Chicago Manual of Style is geared for book publishers, and tk is much more prevalent in the magazine world than in the book world. tk may be more useful in the magazine world because magazines consist of a greater variety of heterogeneous forms of copy written and edited by a larger number of people under tighter deadlines. Under those conditions, it is more natural and useful for participants to stick tk in “unthinkingly” to save time. in the magazine world, it is common for even important factual details not to be nailed down until quite late in the process, even as the magazine is being typeset. in the book world, such Vicky’s facts matters are always decided well before the manuscript reaches the proof stage. so it’s reasonable for the CMOS to look askance at tk—even as magazine employees find it very useful to be able to write a phrase like “...went to university tk years ago...” without having to puzzle out what form that tk should take (dots or zeroes?), full in the knowledge that everybody involved in the process knows what is meant—that further work is needed.

MAKING WHOOPEE with everyone in the art department not fully aware of the new friday ritual, we decided to publish the rules in this week’s adw. The last person from the Art Department to make it in to work on Fridays mornings must sit on the Whoopie cushion located on Anthony’s desk.

while a relatively new ritual, it is one that brings great joy to those of us in art. past sitters have included meghan, megan, anthony, and gina .

“God forbid you were late. Everybody knew about it,” Luis says when asked about Captain Call Out. Wouldn’t the Whoopee Cushion also announce that? Sure, but it was only once a week. “The best part was it was self-inflating so no one’s lips ever had to touch it.”

RESOLUTIONS The first issue of 2010 found Luis making a resolution to be more active and feeling inspired by Anthony’s resolution to draw every day. In 2010 Luis did walk miles to and from the Flatbush Target and Toys ‘R’ Us. That’s been scaled back to nightly walks with our tiny dog now that we have a car and everything is closed anyway. At the beginning of 2020, Luis announced he would do 20 large pieces and 120 quick sketches. He easily met the 120 goal when creating content for Betty school, but “no way I’m getting to 20.” Though, he would like to caveat that with the fact he becomes a prolific artist around the holidays when family requests pieces as gifts. —MV

2011 HEADLINES Last issue, when I calculated when Issue 100 should have been published (March 27, 2011) and what would have been in the news at that time, it brought me back to vuvuzelas from the World Cup in South Africa (even though that was 2010...). Then I found this picture of Kal’s grandpa blowing a vuvuzela at him.

Things I forgot I made

ADW GOES DIGITAL The Dubbs went through its phases. All the type was justified. Everything was three columns. No pictures were opened up because it was going to print poorly anyway... Then people started to leave Niche and we needed to be available beyond the printed copies handed out on Friday afternoons. A Facebook group was started, a Tumblr blog with a handful of entries, and a website with exclusive online content. The actual original idea for the Dubbs was that it should be a website. That always sounds so easy in theory when you hear that someone made a website in order to show a store they needed to beat a better online price. But good-looking websites don’t come together quickly when you are not already making good-looking websites. So, I told Luis his first issue of Art Department Weekly should just be in print. Forty-five issues later it seemed time to put the Dubbs online. Again, in theory, that’s a nice idea, but we were trying to do it with minimal investment. The original site is basically still sitting there. I updated it a little bit to promote the music issue. I changed it even more recently to embed content from issuu.com so readers don’t have to download the app. But then I needed to get back to meeting the print deadline. Maybe I’ll get back to upating madelinestrum.com/ adw to be responsive and user friendly. Maybe. —MV

TV & MOVIES

Glee, Lost, and everything with vampires appeared to be frequent topics of discussion. Narrowing down all our viewing favorites to Five Things wasn’t possible when so many Marvel movies have been released between issues 68 and 100, we started streaming series to fill the void a lack of sports left, and there’s simply so much good TV. Vampires and zombies aren’t something we’re watching much of anymore, but shows with singing came back into rotation with The Voice and then Zoe’s Extraordinary Playlist. There are a number of shows Luis can’t wait for Madeline to stream because he already watched them on his phone or his second monitor at work, but how can he rewatch Breaking Bad and play video games and watch the current playoff games? Madeline and her phone will probably pick Handmaid’s Tale.

We just heard Walking Dead and Supergirl are coming to a close in 2021 :( From our April 2011 issue, the Niche crew dressed as the cast of Glee (and we waited a few months to use the picture).

FASHION ISSUES Bravo brought Project Runway back and seemed to have cast five different versions of their new host Christian Siriano. The twists! I would never have put money on Geoffrey Mac winning except that he’s obviously a good person to work with if he went home and got a job doing more costumes during the break where he should have been designing his final collection. He was the best bet for a mentorship.

STILL SUPER? LV will tell you Laura Vandervoort was pretty good, but Melissa Benoist (the current) is his favorite Supergirl. He likes her as a reporter. He likes her in a cape. She should lose the bangs and get better writers.

REVISING HIS OPINION Luis’ current hot take on the Black Widow movie Disney Plus should have premiered months ago: I’m looking forward to this. It is long overdue. Every other character has had a solo film—some two if not three. (Hawkeye was always a bit player.) I’m very much looking forward to seeing Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh (Fighting with My Family)’s take on the story. I think they’re angling for Florence to be the new Black Widow. Also, Hopper (Stranger Things’ David Harbour) with a bad Russian accent? Sign me up every day.

HOT MAYORS

AMY INTRODUCED US TO HER PICKS IN ISSUE 44. THIS IS OUR 2020 UPDATE The fittest mayors in America kicked us off at samirbecic.com/top-25-fittest-mayors-in-america-2018/

JACOB FREY MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. Frey was sworn in as mayor in 2018 at the age of 36, but came into our conscience when he took to the podium after George Floyd’s lynching. His city was overwhelmed with protesters at a time when Minnesota banned gatherings of more than 10 people. There are pictures of Frey at protests with “I Can’t Breathe” printed on his mask. The Minneapolis city council voted in June to disband the police and replace it with a Department of Community Safety and Violence Prevention. Now the city is being sued by eight people who argue that change increased crime. Frey is a former professional runner and marathoner. Anti-racism is not a sprint, so ADW is rooting for Frey. One meme compares him to Harvey Dent. He stood with the U.S. Conference of Mayors to fight family separation on the border with Mexico before fighting the pandemic.

Mayor Frey

Mayor Bowser

MURIEL BOWSER DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA The sixth mayor of D.C. graced Amy’s list, but its eighth mayor made the samirbecic.com list with her workouts, walks and runs, nutrition seminars, and health expos. Bowser expanded opportunity across all eight Wards of DC by strengthening job training programs, and by attracting and retaining jobs in the District. She renamed the stretch of 16th Street NW in front of the White House, “Black Lives Matter Plaza,” installing the first BLM mural spanning the entire street. DC-based leaders of Black Lives Matter said the act was a distraction from real policy changes. I wondered if Bowser was really the 2020 mayor to include here when Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms of Atlanta (photo by Joshua Rashaad McFadden) had been sued by her governor over mask mandates after the police chief tried to engage

Mayor Lance Bottoms protesters and then resigned after her officers killed a man who was drunk at a drive thru. The South might not have “the fittest” cities, but Craig Melvin talked to seven black mayors (most in their 30s) from southern cities on TODAY about how they navigate relations with police, Confederate monuments, and responses to the pandemic. Check it out at today.com.

HOt MaYOr alert! After a trip to the other Coast, Amy gives us the scoop on who woud get her vote.

HILLARY SCHIEVE RENO, NEV. To be completely superficial, Shieve does not look nearly 50. Her work to support organ donations (she received a kidney from her sister) and stay healthy put her on the samirbecic.com list, but her work to support entrepreneurs and revitalize business in Reno put her on Politico’s short list of most interesting mayors.

Mayor Schieve

Sam Adams, “Silver Fox,” 47, Portland The first openly gay mayor of a Top 30 U.S. city. He’s been rocked with scandal from an in-office sexual relationship with a teenager. Still, a silver fox.

we

Carmen Gronquist, “Mayoral Pinup,” 44, Arlington, Oregon The mayor of a town with a population of 524, she had to step down in 2008 due to racy pics of herself that she posted on MySpace. But, LOOK AT THOSE ABS! I’d post pics of myself too if I were her.

Mayor Suarez

Gavin Newsom, “Mayor Hottie,” 43, San Francisco I saw the man in person, from two feet away. He’s young, handsome, has quite a head of hair, and wears Converse. (They’re just like us!) Briefly dated Sofia Milos from CSI Miami. Now married to another actress (but that’s never stopped him— his first marriage broke up after an affair with a staffer).

Adrian Fenty, “Bald and Beautiful,” 40, D.C. This tall drink of multi-cultural water (he’s Afro-Panamian and Italian-American) likes to wears black fedoras and runs triathalons. Also smart and passionate.

Honorable Mention: Sarah Palin. Lest we forget, she was once mayor of Wasilla. And those who want to have sex with their teachers often find her hot.* *independent study, 2009 Not Hot: Jersey City mayor Jeremiah Healey was found passed out naked on his front porch after one too many drinks... while he was mayor. And he was re-elected this year.

UPDATES

FRANCIS SUAREZ MIAMI, FLA.

Suarez made samirbecic. com’s list for things like playing pick up basketball in the public parks with kids, but he makes our list for being one of the first U.S. elected officials to enter isolation after contracting COVID-19 from possibly a local event with Brazilian government official who later tested positive.

Mayor Garcetti

San Francisco Mayor Newsom is now GOVERNOR NEWSOM. Surrounded by wildfires, he signed a bill to reform California’s inmate firefighter program. “Inmates who have stood on the frontlines, battling historic fires should not be denied the right to later become a professional firefighter,” he said.

BALD AND BEAUTIFUL Adrian

ERIC GARCETTI LOS ANGELES, CALIF. As the mayor of the second largest city in America, Garcetti’s decisions about public gatherings and opening schools are heavy enough, but he’s also fighting with Trump over forest management and calling protesters outside the hospital where ambushed police officers were taken ‘abhorrent.’ Garcetti served as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve, studied as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, and is a foster parent. He takes morning hikes in the park with his family and when he has guest, such as Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. (There’s video online.) ADW hopes there’s a happy ending to Garcetti’s huge to-do list.

September 22, 2020 • Art

Fenty served one term and dated Steve Jobs’ widow, Laurene Powell Jobs. He’s a venture capitalist now.

SILVER FOX Sam Adams did not seek a second term, but announced his candidacy for Portland City Commission.

MAYORAL PINUP Carmen Gronquist seems to have fallen off the face of the earth.

A NOTE FROM THE DOCTOR Hi, everyone! I’m John Vilanova (“JV”) and I got hired at Niche Media in Fall 2009 as a fact-checker, my first job after college. I worked there from 2009 until 2010, returning to freelance in the summer of 2011 before returning full-time in the summer of 2012. I stayed until summer 2014, eventually becoming senior research editor and then managing editor of Philly Style. In a lot of ways, I’ve been chasing the community that Niche gave me ever since—it was the best workplace I’ve ever been a part of. I have a deep, deep love and appreciation for the people I got to work with. Couldn’t have asked for a better job. I left Niche to pursue a Ph.D in Communication at UPenn in Philly, completing it in 2019 (so, yes, you can call me Dr. if you want). I took a job last year as Professor of Practice in Journalism & Communication and Africana Studies at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. My job is to teach the next generation of journalists and writers how to go about doing their jobs in ways that are more racially responsible, making sure equity becomes a practice, and that, as the kids say, we “stay woke.” My big area of focus (about which I’ve written in the LA Times and The Atlantic in recent years and am slowly working on a book about) is the GRAMMY Awards and how they contain a kind of racialized hierarchy about what “good” music looks and sounds like. I love my work and am just trying to make things a little better out there in the world any way I can. I met the love of my life, Sara, in Kansas while I was there visiting friends in 2013. After our first meeting, we communicated exclusively by writing for the next six months—I wrote most of my messages to her from the cafeteria at 100 Church Street, eventually convincing her to move to the East Coast and to a city 100 times bigger than anywhere she’d ever lived before. We got married June 9, 2018, in Lawrence, Kansas, and are living in deeply suburban Bethlehem, tending our garden and trying to stay sane during quarantine. We’re expecting our first child in March and are unbelievably thrilled at the thought of it. Hope everyone’s doing okay.

JV instantly became one of my favorite people. —Luis AN EXTRA NOTE I know that the past is always through a vaseline-coated lens, but Niche really was the best workplace culture I’ve ever been a part of. The Dubbs is the quintessence of that—of the idea that there was nothing wrong with a bunch of creative people who did their jobs, took seriousness and pride in them, but also found time to be humans as well. As the Dubbs’s fearless leader, you taught me so much about what I wanted out of a workplace, and I find myself still chasing that feeling to this day. So it’s my pleasure!

ADULTING WITH DAN The Dubbs hits the century mark! Writing those silly columns was a weekly highlight of my Niche years. What has transpired since I left Niche Media you ask? *Inhales Deeply* Here we go! Immediately after leaving Niche, my then girlfriend (now wife) and I went to Paris before I started at Esquire as an Account Manger. Those seven days of being between jobs with no email and just enjoying what Paris had to offer was a blast! Not long after that, Aysha and I moved in together in the UWS and got engaged on an August weekend in Montauk. As life goes, once that ring went on her finger, we went into hyper drive! Wedding planning, house hunting, and thinking about starting a family. That timeline went down like this... 2015: June/Wedding, Sept/Close on house in Huntington, November/ Move to Burbs. 2016: July/Start a new job at Fast Company, 2017: May/Get pregnant, 2018: Feb/It’s a boy - Baby Ryan is born! That 3.5 year span was the most rewarding, stressful, productive, exhilarating, meaningful, terrifying, and beautiful time in my life. Pepper in winning a couple of fantasy football championships, trips to Norway, Fiji (honeymoon), Bodrum, Breckinridge, Oaji, Newport (babymoon), other cities

around the USA, and a short year and a half stint at Elite Traveler selling ads, I think that is the Dan Maxwell experience...abridged. We now have settled into a life with a 2.5 year old that just started preschool and have been in our home just under 5 years. Excitement these days includes going to Home Depot to buy some mums for my planter box—yes mums—and that’s the way I like it!

To my past, present, and future ADW compatriots—viva la dubz! —DRM

INDELIBLE FUNK What up! Hope everyone is doing well. The world before covid seems like another life lived these days, but let’s go even further back—back to when ADW was born. I can’t believe we’re at 100 issues. It’s a real testament to Luis and Madeline’s hard work and undying commitment to ADW. A BIG THANK YOU to you both! Thinking back on our times at Niche brings a smile to my face. We forged so many great friendships united by the struggles of an underpaid and overworked art department constantly on deadline with little or no budget per issue. :) I’ll never forget organizing and funding the first Ludachristmas by slipping in a fake $300 spot illustration to Gotham Magazine and making it an annual event! So, a little about me post Niche. I left Niche in 2011 with a raise in pay and an enthusiastic attitude as the new Art Director at weekly TVGuide. After a year at TVG, I realized that the money wasn’t making me any happier. I enjoyed the greater responsibility, but I didn’t have enough time to do work that I really loved. We cranked out an issue per week. I did get to re-design their Comic Con issues, but that was a pleasure I only got to experience annually. The weekly Friday deadlines had created such a stressful work environment that I was blasting off whenever we closed the issue on a Friday into an orgy of alcohol, drugs, and partying. As some of you know, I’m a graffiti artist who would use the weekends to paint murals and get my hands dirty.

32

Art Department Weekly • September 22, 2020

The stress and partying was affecting my work in the office and on the weekends as well when I was doing what I truly loved. I had thought about leaving the 9-5 office environment, but the prospect of freelance work was uncertain and intimidating. After a year at TVG, I promised myself to take my mural work seriously and stay in or go home early on Friday night so I could wake up focused to paint and create. Over time, my work was showing improvement, and I was being invited to paint at mural festivals around the US. In December 2012, while travelling home from Miami Art Basel, I was notified that I was an artist selected to paint the newly renovated LinkedIn offices in the Empire State building. I was beyond excited. This was going to be the moment where I ventured out on my own. On a lunch break the following week, I scheduled a walkthrough of the new offices and got to touch the wall at the mural site. We signed the mural contract and I gave my two weeks notice when I got back to the office.

Starting my own mural business was definitely something I was totally unprepared for. I had the artistic and organizational skills to get the mural done, but understanding the business side of things had a steep learning curve. Setting a competitive price on your time and energy when you’re low on cash and the rent is due was a rough lesson to learn. I had to endure lots of resentful jobs getting underpaid and clients from hell with horrible taste. I remember the phone not ringing for three months after the LinkedIn job. I even started cold calling tech startups offering my services. They must have thought I was nuts. I would hustle small jobs and build my portfolio. One of the benefits was that I had an open schedule where I had more time to produce

my own artwork. I wasn’t limited to just the weekends. During my first year of freelancing, I heard word of an international graffiti competition in Tahiti. I signed up and was selected to compete. Traveling to Tahiti for a week of writing graffiti and painting murals was a dream come true. On top of it all, I somehow managed to take First Place in the competition. It was surreal, and on Mother’s Day no less. Mom was proud! They invited me back the following two years to compete again where I took first place in the lettering portion of the competition in ’15 and then to produce my first large scale mural in ’16. My reputation as a skilled muralist both personally and professionally was spreading. Since then I’ve been

travelling and painting all over the world whenever I have the time. I’ve had the opportunity to illustrate murals for Netflix show OITNB, Superfly the movie, and TIKTOK. I’ve also painted murals for Nike, Doritos, and STARZ. When I’m not outside painting or working, I have an art studio near my apt where I get to work on my own fine art. I’ve been very fortunate to be busy with work after the first few months of quarantine. I hope everyone reading this is healthy and happy enough to join me in the back room of Planet Rose, for some drinks and Karaoke when all of this is over! Much Love! Anthony

THE BIGGEST ISSUE Assembling pdfs to complete the library on issuu.com, Madeline was amused 16 pages set a record The issue sounds like it started as normal, according to Luis’ editor’s letter, and then just grew out of control as he couldn’t stop coming up with more things to say about upcoming Marvel movies and his favorite toys and moments from Empire Strikes Back, which was turning 30 that weekend. Looking at it now, it totally begs the question, “What were they thinking?” Apparently, I was not only assembling Issue 55, but also designing and customizing T-shirts for our little family to wear in Disney World, planning that trip, raising an infant, and babysitting Meg four days a week. And I was turning 30. I’m no longer surprised I ordered a giant ice cream cake for myself from Baskin Robbins.

We also traveled to Chicago for Mother’s Day. Issues came out every week.

“So, this has become the largest issue to date. Something Madeline was not prepared for. It kind of makes her want to cry because she’s sure this is also the shittiest issue to date.”

Issue 52 recapped the first year in only 12 pages—and it wasn’t about to be produced on time. A 4-page teaser came out the week it should have been distributed.

Why stop at designing an iron-on decal? Not only was there a design on the back, I bought a pack of mens shirts and tailored three of them to fit Meg, Kal, and me so that we didn’t look like we were wearing a man’s shirt.

STAYING OFF PROPERTY I booked a hotel in Cocoa Beach so we could get up early and go look at manatees (a couple dolphins, a lot of birds, and a chameleon) before heading to Star Wars weekend back in Orlando. Meg was wearing the Empire Strikes Back T-shirt but it was still “a surprise” to her when we drove up to the park. The parade included the voice actress for Ahsoka Tano and pictures with Queen Amidala. Characters wouldn’t sign the shirt unless you took it off, so Papa had to change.

SO WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST? If you’ve been paying attention to the Dubbs on Issuu, then you would know we go far beyond 16 pages when covering conventions. Again, it’s funny to flip through the originals and see only two pages of coverage for New York Comic Con. Only one cosplayer? Where are the sketches?

2016 Conventions - 120 pages 2017 Conventions - 84 NYCC15 - 74 NYCC18 - 68 NYCC19 - 64 NYCC14 - 52 adW Goes to toY FaIr

ith copies of ADW in tow (to prove that i had bylines and that we feature toy coverage), i was given a media badge and map to walk the floor and cover an event i had always dreamed of attending. After a misstep to the dolls and learning toys, i found myself in toy geek nirvana—the action figure alley. my first stop was the dC direct booth. i am a

Superman freak (i mean my son’s name is kal) so the “Superman: world of New krypton” toys (below left) were the biggest hit of the day. That’s Superman (2nd from left) as Commander el. i also loved the Green lantern multi-part statue (right) as well the great Catwoman statue (below right) based on the artwork of Adam Hughes.

Here is a small selection of other things i loved while at Toy Fair 2010: (clockwise) Funko’s Justice league plushies (Superman was amazing); Tonner’s disney princess Collection; the minimates delorean with a mini marty mcFly; a huge selection of uglydolls; lego Harry potter’s Hogwarts Castle with moving stairs; Neca’s megan Fox from Jonah Hex and Terminator 2 figures; kotubukaya’s Captain America, Thor and iron man statues; diamond’s iron man and war machine action figures.

What’s extra weird about the single spread for NYCC is that there don’t seem to be any original pictures. Our coverage of Free Comic Book Day included these pictures Luis took of Meg getting a sketch and talking to Joe Stanton at Jim Hanley’s Universe.

“Wooowwwwwww... I can’t imagine only two and not 40.” -Luis upon hearing how ADW used to cover NYCC

Under an assignment for Maxim, Madeline secured a press pass and found two cosplayers to follow around on separate days for NYCC 2013. Talking with so many photographers, sculptors, and artists was exhilarating. The NYCC 2014 themed issue broke the mold for ADW, changing the way we designed the cover and feature stories.

“I think we do post con coverage better than anyone else.” -Luis “I love our comic con issues. Each one gets better than the last,” Luis says. “You’ve unlocked a formula that works.” I think our coverage from year to year has changed a lot, though, depending who is there. I’m alone? I’m with an infant? I’m following around a 9-year-old? I’m not there at all? The 2014 issue was a mega recap. I went section by section of the Javits Center when planning the issue. By the time I was cranking out the 2019 issue—when I hadn’t been to NYCC at all that year—I planned the issue around what was actually important. Our 2014 NYCC coverage has the most traffic of everything we have online. I think it’s because we talked to so many people have such a range of real conversations. Luis sat down with Todd McFarlane to talk about his new toy line. I talked to vendors about wood work, make up, recycled comics... Plus we had plenty of costume pictures.

I would have been happy to photograph the making of any these things.

When I brought the Dubbs back in January, I intended to make every issue like NYCC 2014—talking to people about what they were creating. I love hearing all the different ways people find themselves in the business of making resin jewelry or suddenly needing to finish a comic series. Even more than talking about the art, like how Space Wolf really does destroy the plates for his laser cut designs so that the number are sincerely limited, I love taking behind the scenes pictures. Before the pandemic, I really wanted to start a portfolio of work portraits. People love day in the life shoots for their babies, but jobs are just as intense and good pictures to promote your work seems maybe more valuable. But here we are in pandemic, so I’ll be running tech support and checking schoolwork. —MV

I called the Megabots team to interview them for this article. Their site is still active, but it doesn’t look like they’ve become the new sport they planned to be.

A Feature We Didn’t Get To... The idea of redesigning things had come up as a potential ongoing series, so I took pictures with an iPad like 10 years ago of old year books at my parents’ house. At the time I had them out, Luis was all, “It was the ’90s. More was more.” Looking again now, it’s funny to see the difference when I had control of photos.

What happened to my template?! The horror.

I jumped up to take this photo in French, and then got mad at the way it was cropped. C’est la vie.

When I was the sports editor, I had hundreds of photos that I needed to boil down to maybe seven photos to sum up how the season went for multiple teams in a single sport. I always wanted to paint a complete picture. The first time I was ever really positioned to tell the whole story was when I went on a two-week camping trip for Field Biology. Seven pictures to show what it was like to travel to multiple national parks with only two teachers... Multiple photogs contributed to this spread.

As an editor, my job was to set the templates. Robert Newman and John Korpics’ work directing Entertainment Weekly heavily influenced my choices. This last picture with “Time of Change” was completely lifted from EW. I don’t know how that style worked for dozens of stories. Seeing all the faces in the gutter reminds me of how the staff thought I was being stupid when I would get mad at the way they cropped photos. Back in the day, we drew the crop marks and sent it off to the publisher. No wysiwyg!

Revisiting Old Work It’s funny to find multiple options in an old shoot and wonder why I hated it all in 2008. I’m glad I backed these up. —Madeline

LV TRAVELED A LOT (and I retouched a lot) Traveling is legitimately one of Luis’ least favorite things ever. “I have to interact with new people in different places,” he says in disgust. “I love routine. I love a schedule.” How much does he love flying? “Zero percent.” His first job after Niche included so much travel. Three Super Bowls, three Hometown Hotties, Heavenly Resorts, plus Mardi Gras for Devil’s Cut. “They sponsored a float. The parade never lets anyone have a sponsored float, but they had one. I designed a float.” His current job has only required him to fly one time—on the company jet to Des Moines for a Walmart shoot. The puddle jumper had to be the worst experience, right? “I would rather have the minivan with wings any day. It was super lux. There were no people to deal with. My bag never left my sight. I knew most of the other people on the flight. I could see the pilot. It put me more at ease to see him doing his thing. It was so baller. He just turned around and told us to buckle in when we were getting ready to land. I’ve flown once in the last five years, and that’s ideal.” Really good production companies have helped him escape more travel. “I didn’t travel for Maximum Warrior because I had a good production team.” And there was no photo shoot he needed to direct there. He didn’t have to travel for Prevention’s R3 either. If he doesn’t need to be there hanging signs or making sure he’s getting poses he can work with later, Luis is not leaving town. —MV

Maxim created an award winning special section for Jim Beam Devil’s Cut that was shot in New Orleans during Mardi Gras. (Photographs by Udo Spreitzenbarth)

Two more shoots by Udo Spreitzenbarth that Madeline retouched—one of Hometown Hotties in Las Vegas for a Walmart poster and one for signage for an event at Heavenly Ski Resort in Lake Tahoe.

MADELINE ON THE HOT 100 When I shot this Jim Beam advertorial in March 2013 for Maxim, the plan was to tell a story that ends with April Rose as a ghost. I wasn’t happy with how my version of her as a ghost ended up at the time—and then it had to be simplified even more so phones could properly recognize the image and send readers to the link. Making a better version of the final image has been on my to-do list for seven years. Unfortunately, my copy of the shoot was lost so I don’t have the same shot the story is supposed to end on. I have the image that might have become standees in liquor stores and an outtake that couldn’t be used at the time because we lacked the space and I lacked the ability to really rescue the ring light not firing properly. I’m excited to keep playing with Photoshop while I monitor remote school.

FIVE THINGS ON LUIS’ MIND THESE PAST FEW WEEKS

SHOOTING IN 2K

My most looked-forward-to game of the year was released with completely broken shooting mechanics. It’s taken 4 patches to try and fix what should never have been touched in the first place. This is the lowest rated 2K ever (1.6 metacritic score).

DUBBS TURNS 100

I am so insanely proud of ADW turning 100. The little mag that could. There is no way in the world that it gets here without Madeline playing the role of Atlas and keeping it on her shoulders.

PS5

I want one! I missed the pre-orders and need to secure one soon. THE BUBBLE

I love the NBA playoffs in the bubble. Games every two days have made the playoffs storm by. I love the pace, the drama, and the game play. A+ for the NBA Playoffs. MIKE MCCARTHY

I’ve never been a fan of McCarthy. I feel like he wasted so many good Aaron Rodgers years. Highly overrated, I was not excited when he became the Cowboys coach. The first two weeks haven’t done anything to make me like him more. Basically Garrett 2.0
