A4 – Expressive Portrait
ASSIGNMENT GUIDANCE: •
Read and follow this guidance carefully, if needed print a copy out for quick access.
•
For this assignment you are to research and explore Expressive Portrait Photography.
A traditional portrait is an image of a person, usually showing the face and expression of the sitter. Portraits can represent a person, identity, culture, history or issue. Portraits can include one face, several faces or no faces. Portraits are all around us, from art to photography, magazines and newspapers. Some portraits can have a specific purpose or function (passport photos, mug shots, etc.). Throughout this project you will be thinking creatively to produce a unique expressive outcome.
Task 1: Title Page Portrait: representation, portrayal, likeness, picture, photograph, description, biography, face
Homework Task: Making a Title Page. The ‘goal’ of the title page is to introduce the theme of the assignment. Your title page requires two pieces of written information the assignment (A4) and also the assignment title (Expressive Portrait). •
Before you start your front page, you may wish to research ‘expressive portraiture’ to get a feel for your theme and ideas for your title page. •
You may also wish to include snippets of information on the theme as well as images. •
You have two options when presenting your title page not only can you do it by hand using a variety of materials but you can also do it using ICT software. •
Before you present any of your work, try to make your sketchbook/ pages interesting by using background effects, colours etc. • Give some thought and care to how your information is displayed. •
A4 – Expressive Portrait Task 2: Research / mind map Produce a mind map to illustrate knowledge / understanding / opinion of what ‘portrait photography’ is. • As a starting point conduct a web-search using a popular search engine such as, Google. Presentation – Your mind map should be presented on one A4 page, you may even wish to present it over two A4 pages depending on the information that you sought via research. •
You may wish to present you mind map by hand, OR you may wish to use mind mapping software. To do this you can use a ‘nifty’ online tool called: Bubbl.us.
You may wish to use the following guidelines for creating your mind map: • Start in the centre using an image or titles of the topic, think creatively use colouring pencils? • Select key words and print using upper or lower case letters. • The lines should be connected, starting from the central image. The central lines are thicker, organic and flowing, becoming thinner as they radiate out from the center. • Use multiple colours throughout the Mind Map, for visual stimulation and also to encode or group. • Develop your own personal style of Mind Mapping. • Use emphasis and show associations in your Mind Map. • You may wish to search ‘mind maps’ using Google to get you started?

A4 – Expressive Portrait Task 3a: Image Analysis
During this task you will be responding to a number of photographs through structured analysis. This will help you to further develop critical ways of thinking and responding to visual texts. To start, conduct thorough research (using a search engine) on how to analyse a photograph. Have a look at the links below: •

A4 – Expressive Portrait Task 7: Contact / image sheet •
All images / photographs that you take need to be explained and presented in your Journal. The best way to do this is to make and use ‘contact sheets’.
•
As a guide you should try to aim for at least 28 different shots/ images for each of your ideas.
•
Ensure that you transfer your photographs from the camera, into your own digital folders (Network/ VLE).
•
Create a folder for each subject/ idea, and store associated images into each respective folder.
•
Rename each image appropriately. Follow the steps below to make your contact sheet for this assignment.
Step Guidance •
1
• • •
Transfer your images from the DC into your own digital folder(s). o Make a folder called: GCSE Photography Then, inside make another called: A4 Expressive Portraits • Inside of which, make further folders, one for each of your chosen subject areas.
•
When all of your images are stored safely inside your own folders, RENAME your images/ files, using appropriate file names, for example: EmotionAngry-1, Emotion-Angry-2 etc.
•
Using a program called 'PREVIEW'. Open your images, work with ONE folder/ subject, at a time. Open the Sidebar, and then select 'CONTACT SHEET' to view all of your images for that folder/ subject/ idea. Open GRAB and use the Grab app capture a screen-shot of contact sheet. Save this screen-shot into the same folder, and then print out a copy for your journal/ sketchbook.

Capture/ take up-tp 28 different/ alternative images/ shots that best capture your intended idea. Working in groups, share the DC, ensure that you adjust your shots, so that you have a variety of possible images. Consider, changing 'ANGLE' or 'HEIGHT', try and 'ZOOM' in and out, experiment with 'FOCUS', consider 'LIGHT'.
• • • •
Present each contact sheet with thought and care using a full page for each subject/ idea. o On the opposite page (A4) annotate your images. Refer to them by their file names e.g. Emotion-Angry-1 = , to clearly show, which
images you: *Will use *Won't use *Explain reasons for both *Reflection of your work etc

PRINT - Log in to the school 'frog/ VLE' and navigate: > CLASSROOM > SUBJECTS > ART > PRINTING ORDER FORM
A4 – Expressive Portrait Task 8: Aperture / ISO settings Learn about aperture / ISO settings and present knowledge/ understanding in journal. For your 'final' set of photo's you need to adjust the camera settings to best suit a Portrait shot. Go to the LINKS section of the DP website: •
Frog > Classroom > Subjects > Art > Art Website > BritArt > GCSE Photography > LINKS
• Look for the 'General' link called: Aperture and ISO settings explained. • After the demo, visit the above link/ site and read about the settings, to help reinforce what is shown to you in class. • Using ONE full page; divide it into two sections (Top/ Bottom). • In the top section produce evidence of your knowledge about 'APERTURE' settings: >> How to change the settings >> What the settings will do in terms of affecting the camera's behaviour. >> Why you would adjust the settings to take 'Portrait' images. • In the bottom section produce evidence of your knowledge of 'ISO' settings, using the same format as above.
NOTE: Look inside the Photography YouTube channel for videos also relating to this subject for more help/ assistance.
A4 – Expressive Portrait Task 9: Take ‘Final’ set of Images Before taking your final set of images you need to reflect on the following: • Knowledge and skills that you have acquired throughout this assignment, inject them into your final shots. • Take your time and analyse each shot, makes changes where appropriate. You may find you take 30 shots of the same portrait to get that ‘perfect’ photo. • You need to ensure that your final outcome 'fits in' with your project and journal development(s). Lesser marks are awarded if your final outcome is 'random' with little or no connection to previous tasks/ activity. • Your 'final outcome' should always be done to your best possible standard, and presentation of this work could affect your marks. •
You may wish to develop your photo/image further through manipulation using software such as Adobe Photoshop.
