1.LANDMARKS - INVESTIGATE APPROPRIATE SOURCES, USE SUITABLE TECHNIQUES AND CREATE YOUR OWN TEXTILE INSPIRED BY LANDMARKS Meaning: An object or feature of a landscape or town that is easily seen and recognized from a distance, especially one that enables someone to establish their location. Can you think of any landmarks around you? Write them down now in your books. Your ideas are all important.

A great starting point for inspiration. You could relate this to the modern military. How about the military bases and landmarks around here? War memorials might inspire you? You might explore mixed media, painting or drawing? Lots of potential!
Denise Labadie Quilts and mixed media pieces based on ancient landmarks Ideas: You could visit old churches or monuments near you and take photographs. You could focus in on the texture and create a mixed media piece like this on the left. You might like to create more of a scene like the image on the right. Perhaps you could visit Stonehenge and take photos that could inspire a collage?
John Piper printmaker and designer of stained-glass windows and theatre sets Find a cool church, town hall, old building or monument near you. Take some photos!! Mixed media, prints, image transfer...lots of ideas that you could explore. You could make a series of prints or lovely textured mixed media creations?

Where is your favourite place from your childhood? Why not photograph the area where you grew up/are growing up now or Welsh Artist that uses the special places that mean something to you? The lines that childhood landscapes to Eleri uses might inspire you to do some lino-printing or monomake textile panels and printing. There's a lovely contrast of soft and bold in her work. Bright, flat colours and simple shapes. Bold and simple lines make these striking images. How could you recreate something like this? What could you use to inspire you?
Maltius Hoch Perhaps you have an eye for photography? Hock likes interesting lines and viewpoints. Take some photos and see where it takes you.
Franco Grigani Lots of precise and repetitive lines. Optical illusions and limited colours. How could you something like this inspire your own work? Backgrounds?

4. DIARY - CREATE A PIECE INSPIRED BY EITHER: A DAILY DIARY, A DIARY OF A JOURNAL OR TEXT RECORDED IN A DIARY • This could be taken in many different ways. Here are a few ideas to get you started... • The diary could be the final outcome...you could re-create a personal diary or imagine the diary of someone else? • Thoughts that you've written in a diary or journal could then be used to inspire your work.
• You might take inspiration from other artists who've explored working with diaries and choose to re-create. • You could make links to the military...perhaps look at world wars and the diaries/letters home. This might then be linked to the modern day wars.

Frida Kahlo Frida Kahlo kept visual diaries religiously. You could do something similar. Perhaps you could use these to inspire your work? Maybe your final piece could be a fabric book or diary? What kind of things would you write? Lots of scope for a wide range of techniques and media.
Sandra makes notes in her diary and uses photos from her travels for composition ideas. You could take a photo every day on your phone and then use it to create a wonderful composition like these. Perhaps an instagram snap or yourself everyday? collage and print could work really nicely to make an interesting and personal mixed media piece.

Tilleke Schwarz Tilleke uses snippets of overheard conversations and stitches it into her work. You could go on bus-rides, walk around supermarkets or listen around school and make note of converstaions. They might inspire a story or you might notice a pattern. Get some first hand images involved too and this could be a really interesting embroidery piece!

Perhaps you might like the idea of sculpture or re-cycling old magazines and newspapers? You could create objects with a focus on text like this artist?

Perhaps you like the idea of pouring all of your thoughts and feelings onto paper. Your final piece might be a mixed media painting like this one? A mixture of text and dreamlike images. This might inspire a really personal piece.

5. 'WISH YOU WERE HERE' • A popular phrase on postcards. It has a personal connection to particular places. • Some artists have used postcards as their inspiration and some create work on postcards. • There is the opportunity here for digital, photographic, collaged, stitched or mixed media responses here. This could be a great choice.

If you feel that you have a strength or interest in photography, this might be a really useful artist to start with. Postcard sized images could be created about all kinds of subjects. A great starting point for some excellent AO3 evidence.

These artists create mixed media collages that might be an interesting starting point for some of you? Perhaps you collect lots of letters or pictures or decorative pieces? Maybe you save tickets from holidays or train journeys. You could have a go at creating some really meaningful and creative collages using things that are personal to you.
