Metallic pencils work best on dark paper, but can also be used for highlights over layers of dark coloured pencils. They

are excellent for colourful script. They are also useful for adding bright areas to greetings cards, especially for metal or iridescent elements such as gold rings or Christmas baubles. Being water-soluble, Metallic pencils can be used with a brush, either using the palette method or by drawing the colour onto your design and then wetting it with a brush. Tip: to make a palette using Metallic pencils, scribble some colour onto a scrap of paper and load a damp brush with the colour (image 1).

In ‘The Firework Party’ (image 2), several different colours of Metallic pencils were used in free, squiggly lines to suggest fireworks. The outlines of the people were done using Coloursoft Black, highlighted with a Metallic Silver pencil. The transparency of glass can be suggested with a few simple lines using Metallic Silver (image 3). Iridescence can be suggested by incorporating more

colours (image 4). Metallic Pencils are available in a range of 12 sparkling colours.

New Products

Get into Derwent’s Black Books! Derwent is delighted to announce the introduction of a small range of black paper sketch books. Available in 3 popular sizes A3 landscape, A4 portrait and Square (12”or 30.5cms), each one contains 40 sheets of 200gsm black paper. The paper in the black books is classified as heavy weight which means it is more resilient and will take a minimum of 10 layers of pencil before the surface will begin to deteriorate. It can also be used with water soluble pencils for light washes. Using coloured pencils on black paper can really bring your art work to life making subjects appear more colourful and vibrant. The Derwent Metallic, Coloursoft and Inktense pencil ranges work brilliantly on black paper, enhancing the colour so it really ‘pops’ out of the paper. Metallic pencils are highly reflective and can be used on their own or with other media to bring a little sparkle and brilliant definition to your work. Coloursoft is a velvety soft pencil which releases dense vibrant colour quickly and easily onto the paper, while Inktense offers strong intense colour which when washed-out leaves a translucent ink-like effect. Not only are the Derwent Black Books perfect for colourful pencil drawings, the heavy weight paper means they are ideal as photo albums or for scrapbooking with the black paper acting as the perfect background for your treasured images. Bound with stylish hard matt black covers using extra strong rings, the black paper sketch books can be opened flat to allow you to work easily across a double page and they will also fold back on themselves in order to occupy a smaller work space if required. Derwent Black Books are available from all good art stores starting at just £8.50.

Derwent Academy Oil Pastels are ideal for bold colourful drawings and are fast and easy to use.
