Students studying GCSE (sc) Creative Textiles will work on the examination paper:
The Theme....
'Response to Culture' ...Make a personal response to the theme of 'Culture'. Culture comes under the umbrella of our current theme ‘The Environment’ and your response could be traditional, contemporary or abstract.

Introduction: ● The 'Theme' for this mock examination is: ‘Response to Culture’ During this exam you will be expected to make a clear link/ connection to the set theme and demonstrate a ‘range’ of ideas, experiments, explorations and ‘possible’ outcomes. You will be introduced to the set theme in class by your teacher via a slide-show. ● It is important that you make/ take notes during this introduction and ask questions if you are unsure about anything. ● The Slide-Show will help you understand the ‘structure’ and ‘process’ involved for your Mock exam project, and will also inform you of ‘key’ dates/times that you should write clearly into your planner.
The 'Mock' examination has two components that you need to prepare and plan for: 1. 'Prep' & ‘Development’ work - Sketchbooks/Journals 2. Final Outcome - Main outcome(s)
You will have 5 weeks to complete the 1st component, which should include evidence for assessment objectives 1,2 and 3. Your final ‘Mock’ exam will take place over 3 lessons, and will be conducted in strict examination conditions.

Below is a suggested guide as to how you should spend your time throughout the exam project. ● NOTE: This is only a ‘guide’, you should aim to do more....... a lot more!!!

Identify techniques used by your artist/ photographer / designer, and re-produce these techniques using your own ideas/ work. Use 'reasons', and ‘critique’: What, How, Why, Where? For all/any image and info make sure that you list/tag full sources such as URL’s/ book titles.

Textile Students: Prepare ‘base layers’ of your work. E.g: Dyeing of fabric, base structure of your final outcome etc.

Include comments/ annotations to all of these. 2. Using full sketchbook/ journal pages make some initial 'prep' outcomes. Explore method, technique and media. Textile students be sure that you create samples for each of your ideas. 3. Working outside of your sketchbook/ journal, aim to make a large version ( Textile students: A4/3 size item of work that demonstrates your methods of your intended final outcome.) 4. In your sketchbook/ journal, illustrate a plan for you to follow during all 3 exam lessons. Explain: What you will do, When you will do it, How you will do it.
Exam 3

Final stretch.
1. Textile Students: Work into your
final outcome with detail and aim to develop your work using hand/ machine stitch/printing or Batik etc. 2. All students produce an 'Evaluation' page. Explain how you felt your exam project went. What didn't work as intended, What you would change, if anything and why.
Assessment Objectives: You should approach your Mock Examination like a 'Project'. As such your work will be assessed using the four Assessment Objectives:
AO1: DEVELOP your ideas through investigations and links to Artists/ Photographers. Demonstrate analysis and cultural understanding.
AO2: REFINE your ideas/ work by experimenting and exploring media, materials and processes.
AO3: RECORD your ideas, observations and insights in ways that are relevant to your intentions.
AO4: PRESENT and create a personal, and meaningful response to the given theme. Demonstrating analytical and critical understanding in ways that are relevant to your development studies/ work, and with clear links/ connections to the work of others. For each of the assessment objectives your work will me marked out of 20.
A total of 80 marks can be gained. Use the scale/ indicator on the next page for help in understanding how marks will be awarded:
'Prep' & ‘Development’ Work/time: ●
You will be given 5 weeks of 'Prep' time. During this time you should ensure that fully prepared for lessons (do not forget/loose your sketchbook/ journal or other resources).

Try to dedicate some 'personal' time each week to discuss and plan your project/ work.
●
Consider the first 3 assessment objectives as a 'task-list'. Creating work for each of these assessment objectives will help your project develop, and give your final outcome (Exam Piece) a much better chance of success.
●
Make full use of the 'Textile Clinic' every Wednesday 3pm onwards. Re-arrange your other commitments during this time so that you are able to attend.
●
Begin your 'Prep' work with a title-page. Then produce a mind-map to illustrate your initial thoughts/ ideas. Consider: Artists/Photographers/Textile Artists/Designers > Medium > Ideas > Outcome(s).
●
After a completing a series (2-3) of ‘possible’ outcomes (experimenting with colour, composition, scale, layout and media), produce one large version of what you intend to create during the exam.
Exam Piece/Outcome: ●
You will have 300 mins/ 5 hours to complete your final outcome for the mock examination project.
●
This will take place in normal lessons, so ensure that attend every lesson, and that you are prepared, organised and punctual. If you have a ‘known’ absence, inform your teacher prior to the lesson.
●
Examination conditions will be enforced during these lessons: No talking/ communication. No Mobile phones or other handheld devices such as MP3 players. An exam invigilator will be present to enforce conditions.
●
Ensure that you have a clear plan to follow for each lesson of the exam. Write this plan into your sketchbook/ journal during your 'prep' work/ time.
●
Ensure that you have all resources/ materials needed during the exam lessons. For example you may need to purchase particular fabric, stuffing, yarns or threads prior to the exam. Be prepared.
●
Allow time at the end of each lesson to clear-up. If you finish your work before the end of the lesson. You must sit in silence until you are dismissed. When dismissed, you are to leave the room immediately.
