EXHIBITOR SYNOPSIS Art Dubai is an international art fair with its roots in the Middle East and South Asia. Known as a particularly global and innovative event, Art Dubai now features three gallery programmes—Contemporary, Modern and Marker—offering audiences the opportunity to discover the work of more than 500 artists through histories and across geographies. In 2014, Art Dubai hosts 85 galleries from 34 countries, across three gallery programmes, making it one of the most diverse, globalised of fairs. Featuring key established galleries from Europe, the United States and India showing in the Middle East for the first time, alongside the most dynamic emerging galleries from the region. Over a third of participants are from the Middle East and South Asia, a third from Europe, and the remaining from across East and South East Asia and the Americas.

CONTEMPORARY
In 2014, Art Dubai Contemporary is extraordinarily diverse; the halls feature 70 galleries from 34 countries, from the world’s most influential galleries to dynamic young artspaces. Likewise, the artists range from emerging and upcoming practitioners from lesser-known art capitals to household names. The works they present cover all artistic media—including painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, video, photography and performance. Always aiming to foreground quality and a curatorial approach, Art Dubai has a close relationship with its galleries: the artists they represent, and the works they select, reconfirm year-onyear the fair’s role as a site of discovery and diversity.

CENTRAL ASIA AND THE CAUCASUS AT ART DUBAI 2014 Art Dubai 2014 includes a special focus on the arts scenes of Central Asia and Caucasus; this series of booth exhibitions, commissions and talks represents the largest showcase to date of artists from the region in UAE. Each year, MARKER, a curated selection of booths located within the gallery halls at Madinat Jumeirah, focuses on a particular theme or geography. In 2014, this programme highlights the dynamism of a group of organisations from Central Asia and Caucasus, curated by the collective Slavs and Tatars. Developing this focus throughout the fair, Art Dubai has also invited artists and practitioners from the continent to further participate in Projects, Moving Images, the Global Art Forum and Terrace Talks. MARKER is Art Dubai’s curated programme of galleries and artspaces, which exemplifies the fair’s role as a site of discovery and cross-cultural exchange, and is a feature of Art Dubai’s extensive not-for-profit programming. It focuses each year on a particular theme or geography. In 2014 this themed exhibition looks at ‘notions of identity and faith’. The five artspaces and organisations selected for MARKER 2014 are: ·· ArtEast (Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan); ·· Asia Art + (Almaty, Kazakhstan); ·· North Caucasus Branch of the National Centre for Contemporary Art, NCCA (Vladikavkaz, Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, Russia); ·· Popiashvili Gvaberidze Window Project (Tbilisi, Georgia); ·· YARAT Contemporary Art Space (Baku, Azerbaijian). Slavs and Tatars are working with each space and their artists to present existing and new work of more than 40 artists, that together form a collective exhibition through a ‘regime of portraiture’, including faces, places and traces from mid-twentieth-century painting to contemporary drawings and sculptures.
At the fair, MARKER takes the form of a chaikhaneh or Eurasian (tea) salon, inviting viewers to engage with the portraits both as artifacts, scenography, and as works unto themselves. Each tells a different story of identity, faith, nationhood or language - and how these are interiorized, masqueraded, ritualized and ultimately stretched to supercede today’s brittle identity politics. MARKER also features additional contributions by IADA International Art Development Association and Mardjani Foundation. MARKER 2014 CURATORS Slavs and Tatars is a collective with solo exhibitions at major museums—MoMA, Secession (2012), REDCAT (2013), Kunsthalle Zurich, Dallas Museum of Art (2014) — as well as group exhibitions across the Middle East, North America and Europe. They have published six books, including a translation of the legendary Azeri political satire Molla Nasreddin (2011, JRP-Ringier). Slavs and Tatars are represented by The Third Line, Dubai; Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler, Berlin; and Raster, Warsaw.
