Martha Pagy presents Controvalori, Lucio Salvatore’s first solo exhibition in the gallery, showing a selection of more than 20 works, collages, drawings, photographs and sculptural objects, produced from 2015, some presented in Salvatore’s exhibition Arte Capital in 2016, Centro Cultural Correios , Rio de Janeiro.

Martha Pagy apresenta Controvalori, a primeira exposição individual de Lucio Salvatore na galeria, exibindo mais de 20 obras, colagens, desenhos, fotografias e objetos escultóricos, produzidos a partir de 2015, em parte mostrados na exposição individual Arte Capital realizada em 2016 no Centro Cultural dos Correios, Rio de Janeiro.

Salvatore questions the value of the work of art in a parodic form and inspires a reflection about the logics and the conventions of the system of creation and accumulation of value in the artistic production and in the art system power structure.

Tendo como principal questão a do valor da obra de arte, o italiano Salvatore sugere, de forma paródica, uma reflexão em torno das convenções e da lógica do sistema de criação e acumulação de valor na produção artística e na estrutura de poder do sistema da arte.

The artist deconstructs the dynamics of capital using instruments of what he defines 'arte poverissima', such as price tags, new forms of commercial contracts, art auction documents, coins, all elements transformed according to the artist's poetics that redefines the rules of the art game and relativize the value of the work of art.

In the words of Fernando Cocchiarale, curator of Salvatore’s solo show Metaelementi at the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro, "Salvatore's poetic explores the metaphysical expectations of the object in relation to the dinamics of industrial production, of technology, and in relation to the dynamics of power that cross art itself".

O artista desestrutura a dinâmica do capital, usando os instrumentos do que ele chama de 'arte poverissima', como etiquetas de preços, novas formas de pensar contratos comerciais, documentos de leilões de arte, centavos e outros elementos que, transformados em matéria de criação pelo artista, redefinem as regras do jogo da arte e relativizam o valor da obra de arte. Nas palavras de Fernando Cocchiarale, curador da individual de Salvatore Metaelementi no MAM-Rio, “a poética de Salvatore explora as expectativas metafísicas do objeto dentro das dinâmicas da produção industrial, da tecnologia, e dentro da disputa de poder que atravessa a própria arte”.

VALORI ATTIVI The Price Fields are monochromes made with colorful price tags, glued to paper. In the Price Fields series, the artwork defines its own value, the sum of the prices. Salvatore has created Price Fields in the context of his research on color as a promotion tool based on the need to differentiate and seduce the viewer in order to broaden the possibilities of consumption. The price tags are not just a simple attribute, but they define the identity of the artwork, they keep the original function of capturing the public's attention on the item being consumed. The Active Values (2018) are the most recent works created with price tags and whose formal compositions pay homage to the work of the artist Willys de Castro, to his Active Objects that, through spatial displacements of geometric forms and color substitutions, stimulate the visual thinking of the public. "The work that defines its own value, price tag that confuses meaning and signifier, the active role of color and its formal composition used for retinal excitation are foundations of the Active Values series, conceptual works that reduce to the minimum terms the political, economic and visual expectations about the value of the work of art today." Os Price Fields, literalmente Campos de Preço, são monocromos feitos com etiquetas de preço coloridas coladas sobre papel. Nos Price Fields a obra de arte define seu próprio valor, a soma dos preços. Salvatore criou esta série num contexto de estudo da cor como instrumento de promoção no comércio, em função da necessidade de diferenciar e seduzir o público para expandir as possibilidades de consumo. Os preços não são apenas um atributo, mas definem a identidade do trabalho, eles mantêm a função original de capturar a atenção do público no objeto de consumo. Os Valores Ativos (2018) são os trabalhos mais recentes realizados com etiquetas de preço e cujas composições formais prestam homenagem à obra do artista Willys de Castro, aos seus Objetos Ativos que, através de deslocamentos espaciais de formas geométricas e substituições de cores, estimulam de maneira sofisticada e incisiva o pensamento visual do público. “A obra que define seu próprio valor, a etiqueta de preço que confunde significante e significado, o papel ativo da cor e de sua composição formal usada para excitação retinal são fundamentos da série Valores Ativos, obras conceituais que reduzem aos mínimos termos as expectativas políticas, econômicas e visuais sobre o valor da obra de arte hoje”. The Controvalori series places at the center of the creative process the denial of the power of appearance, of what is considered beautiful, rich. This denial aims to turn the material spiritual, changing our expectations about matter, re-signifying its form.

A série Controvalori coloca no centro do processo criativo a negação do poder da aparência, do que é considerado belo, rico. Esta negação almeja tornar espiritual o material, mudando nossas expectativas sobre a matéria, re-significando sua forma.

Salvatore performs a meditative painting with monochrome oil paints on precious objects such as gold sheets used as value reserves certified by the financial markets.

Salvatore performa uma pintura meditativa com tintas a óleo monocromáticas sobre objetos preciosos como lâminas de ouro usadas como reservas de valor certificadas pelos mercados financeiros.

For Controvalori exhibition, the artist painted on amethyst druzes to cover the characteristic glow of the Brazilian stones, letting their forms prevail and creating a place where the eye could find new metaphysical possibilities, the cure.

Para exposição Controvalori o artista pintou sobre drusas de ametista para cobrir o característico brilho das pedras da terra brasileira, deixando prevalecer suas formas e criando um lugar onde o olho pudesse encontrar novas possibilidades metafísicas, a cura.

CIRCUITOS FEIRAS On October 15, 2015, during the opening of Frieze Art Fair in London, Salvatore posted on his Instagram profile the phrase Art Will Be Taken Away, a message written on a white background, inviting people to repost the image with the Frieze official hashtags #Friezeartfair #Frieze and #Friezemasters. The collective performance aimed to inscribe Salvatore’s artwork in the art fair digital circuit. The message, written on a white background and reposted by the participants/co-authors, left a sense of absence in the art fair Instagram feed, otherwise filled with images of the artworks shown and published by the fair’s visitors. During the eight hours of the message insertion in the art fair feed, Art Will Be Taken Away was the most published artwork with the Frieze’s hashtags, followed by images of Nelly Nahmad Gallery's booth and of the Brazilian artist Tunga’s performance. In the same year Salvatore re-created the performance for the opening of art fairs such as Artissima in Turin and Art Basel in Miami Beach.

Em 15 de outubro de 2015, durante a abertura da Frieze Art Fair em Londres, Salvatore postou em seu perfil do Instagram a frase Art Will Be Taken Away, uma mensagem escrita sobre fundo branco, convidando as pessoas a republicarem a imagem com os hashtags oficiais da feira Frieze #Friezeartfair #Frieze e #Friezemasters. A performance coletiva teve como objetivo inscrever a obra de arte de Salvatore no circuito digital da feira de arte. A mensagem, escrita em fundo branco e repostada pelos participantes/co-autores deixou uma sensação de ausência no painel Instagram da feira de arte, normalmente preenchida com imagens das obras de arte apresentadas e publicadas pelos visitantes da feira. Durante as oito horas de inserção da mensagem no painel da feira de arte, Art Will Be Taken Away foi a obra de arte mais publicada com os hashtags da Frieze, seguida pelas imagens do estande de Nelly Nahmad Gallery e da performance do artista brasileiro Tunga. No mesmo ano, Salvatore recriou a performance para as aberturas das feiras Artissima em Turim e Art Basel em Miami Beach.

BABEL Babel is a work that consists in the act of stacking coins, up to the limit of accumulation, which means avoiding that the 'tower' built by the participants falls down. The game can be played individually or in group, in a competition.

Babel é um trabalho que consiste no ato de empilhar moedas, até o limite de acumulação, evitando que a 'torre' construída pelos participantes caia. O jogo pode ser jogado individualmente ou em grupo, num formato de competição.

The game goal is to build the tallest tower.

O objetivo do jogo é construir a torre mais alta. O jogo apresenta aos participantes o dilema de arriscar adicionar mais moedas e tentar ganhar o jogo ou ser conservador e evitar o colapso da torre que significaria derrota.

Os registros fotográficos apresentados durante a exposição Controvalori são de jogos realizados pelo artista em seu estúdio em 2013.

The game presents the participants with the dilemma of whether take the risk of adding more coins and try to win the game or be conservative and avoid the collapse of the tower that would mean defeat. The photographic records presented during Controvalori exhibition are of games played by the artist in his studio in 2013.

1 M2 DI TERRA This artwork conceptualized in 2012 consists in the artist’s appropriation of one square meter of land that is delimited with 12 travertine tiles, 50x50x3 cm each. In its first version Salvatore sets up a real estate sale of this batch of land, selling portions of 1/100 of the square meter of land. With this work of land art, the artist questions the nature and the boundary between art and land, art market and real estate, private property and art.

Com este trabalho de land art, o artista questiona a natureza e a fronteira entre arte e terra, mercado de arte e comercialização de fundos imobiliários, propriedade privada e arte.

In 2015 this work was put on the market in the real estate agency Só Atlântica Imóveis, in Av. Atlântica, 1998 ljB, in Copacabana during the period of the exhibition Fragmento, in the Centro Cultural Correios, Rio de Janeiro.

Lucio Salvatore (1975) is an Italian born Brazilian multidisciplinary artist who works in photography, text, painting, sculpture, performance and appropriation of processes. Salvatore lives and works in Rio de Janeiro and in Sant’Elia Fiumerapido (Italy). Educated in classical studies, Salvatore graduated in economics from the Bocconi University of Milan; he also studied philosophy in Milan, photography in New York and art at the EAV Parque Lage visual arts school in Rio de Janeiro. For more than 20 years Martha Pagy has been dedicated to the promotion of art in the institutional and private fields. She was responsible for formulating the profile of the Banco do Brasil Cultural Center in Rio de Janeiro, as director of programming and estate, from its inauguration in 1989 to 2003. At the head of her company Múltiplos Cultural Project since 2006, she has been curating, consulting and producing art projects. From 2007 to 2012 she directed the Largo das Artes gallery in the historic center of Rio, where she held contemporary art exhibitions of artists from Brazil and abroad, and promoted the launch of young talents in the Brazilian art scene.

Há mais de 20 anos Martha Pagy se dedica à promoção da arte, no campo institucional e privado. Foi uma das responsáveis pela formulação do perfil de atuação do Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil no Rio de Janeiro, na função de diretora de programação e patrimônio, desde sua inauguração, em 1989, até 2003. À frente de sua empresa Múltiplos Projetos Culturais desde 2006, vem desenvolvendo projetos de curadoria, consultoria e produção. De 2007 a 2012 dirigiu a galeria Largo das Artes, no centro histórico do Rio, onde realizou exposições de arte contemporânea com artistas do Brasil e do exterior, e promoveu o lançamento de jovens talentos na cena artística brasileira.
