The REDISCOVERY booths are dedicated to art from 1917 to 1987, by living or deceased artists who are underrecognized, underestimated or forgotten. Tracing a timeline that spans the beginnings of conceptual art to neo-conceptualism, via the twentieth-century avant-garde, this section aims to excavate and highlight surprising, unknown and original practices that have not yet broken into the art historical mainstream.
Galleries
The SOLO exhibitions present work by established and upcoming artists and are spread throughout the fair. Galleries have the opportunity to make a distinctive statement by presenting one specific project by an individual artist. This gives the visitor the opportunity to discover the work of an artist at greater depth. The SOLO presentations are pre-selected by the International Selection Committee.

Curated by Elena Sorokina Exhibition design by Richard Venlet Hôtel de la Poste - Tour & Taxis
Artistic Projects
Mystic Properties is the artistic project for the 2018 edition of Art Brussels developed in collaboration with the Higher Institute for Fine Arts in Ghent, or HISK. It is curated by Elena Sorokina, curator for the HISK, and includes works by alumni and current and future friends of the HISK. The point of departure for the project is the Ghent Altarpiece, also known as The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, which was first exhibited in Ghent’s Saint Bavo Cathedral in 1432. Painted by Jan and Hubertus Van Eyck, the altarpiece is considered one of the most important paintings of the Western canon, a monument of a proto-modernity still rife with such dichotomies as mysticism and realism, art and craft, and myth and science. The exhibition looks beyond the canonized status of the altarpiece to focus on two propositions: the altarpiece’s local belonging and its epic migrations. For centuries, it was an object of desire for kings and heads of state, dictators, governments and regular citizens. Its various panels were sold, looted and ransomed, incorporated into royal collections and migrated between countries as spoils of war. With this vertiginous perspective on the historical shifts in the status of the Ghent Altarpiece in mind, Mystic Properties examines histories of possession and temporalities of 26
belonging, displacement and recovery, as well as the paradoxes of owning and showing art in the present day. Today, ownership of art grows increasingly disconnected from its being exhibited, from making it accessible to the public. In the specific context of this exhibition, the altarpiece is considered a local treasure, intimately connected to the city of Ghent. Nonetheless, the HISK artists question both the relationship to its canonical greatness and the impurity of categories and canons as such. The artists recast the question of the actual belonging of the work, asking if it can indeed be considered a part of ‘the commons’, like air, water, or language, a public cultural property belonging to everyone. In further exploring the motif of belonging and possession, participating artists have invented new ‘regimes of ownership’ for art, developed ‘acquisition scores’, and created their own crypto-currencies, or seed banks, in the form of works of art.

Rinus Van de Velde, I had a flash of insight: that this was in fact my life. This is how it exactly looked like and presumably always will. I received, I was a well, I endured. I was endurance itself. Now these days are over, the party stops. Now I am the night of nights, the negation of the negations. Artistic Projects
To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Art Brussels commissioned a film to explore the Belgian art scene as perceived from different positions and time frames over the past 50 years. The film offers insight into the burgeoning and intricate character of Belgian art, with focus on Brussels as a place of particular development. In a series of conversations between people immersed in diverse practices and places in the contemporary art environment, the film explores the direct experiences of those who have been part of and have helped shape the recent history of Belgian art, investigating their artistic and social paths, how their trajectories have shaped certain practices and what this means today. During this process, we asked all of our interlocutors to suggest new contributors. In this way, each conversation generated new exchanges. With this project, we hope to reveal impressions, cross-sections, portraits and insights into an art world that is rich and raw, sturdy and precarious, local and international – the whole of which we all help create.

Ben Van den Berghe, Alexey Shlyk, Edi Danartono, Private Eden VIP Lounge
Artistic Projects
The VIP Lounge of Art Brussels welcomes collectors, curators and art lovers from all over the world. On invitation of Art Brussels, Ben Van den Berghe (b. 1985), Alexey Shlyk (b. 1986) and Edi Danartono (b. 1986), artists and friends with different artistic backgrounds, will present Private Eden, a multi-media installation as part of their ongoing project: The Plastic Number, an exploration into escapist aesthetics. For their installation at Art Brussels, the artists were inspired by the life and work of Edward James (1917–1984), an eccentric British millionaire, collector and patron of many artists from the surrealist movement and a ‘surrealist by birth’ himself. In 1947, while living in semi-exile, James acquired a coffee plantation in a subtropical rainforest in the mountains of Mexico and transformed it into Las Pozas: a home for exotic animals with thousands of orchids, waterfalls, pools and concrete structures spreading out over more than 40 ha of lush tropical jungle. Intrigued by Edward James’ surrealist Xanadu, the artists collectively explore the desire to escape reality into a constructed paradise. In a total installation with various elements such as sculpture, painting and photographic architecture, they transform the VIP Lounge into a temporary refuge. 34

Inspiring / inspired: women in the Belfius Art Collection Belfius Lounge Belfius Wealth Management presents Inspiring / inspired: women in the Belfius Art Collection, a series of works selected for Art Brussels, and an invitation to discover our art collection from a new angle. We invite you to follow the woman on the canvas and behind the canvas: as a model, a muse or an artist, as the endless source of inspiration or as a pioneer in her art. When bringing together significant works by a.o. Lili Dujourie, Marthe Wéry, Berlinde De Bruyckere, Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven and artists such as Michaël Borremans, Paul Delvaux, Rik Wouters and Luc Tuymans, new conversations emerge, between men and women, between model and artist, between yesteryear’s and tomorrow’s society, and between modern and contemporary art.

In Pursuit of Bling, Otobong Nkanga Hôtel de la Poste - Tour & Taxis La Jeune Peinture Belge / De Jonge Belgische Schilderkunst, organizer of the BelgianArtPrize, is proud to give prominence to Otobong Nkanga, winner of the BelgianArtPrize in 2017. Otobong Nkanga (NG/BE) was born in 1974 in Kano, Nigeria, and lives and works in Antwerp. Nkanga’s multidisciplinary practice spans drawing, photography, installation, video and performance, and focuses on the interrelation between environment, architecture and history. Her work weaves together concerns about land, natural resources, architecture, the value connected to them and the dynamic status of remembrance. These predominantly political topics are incorporated into poetic combinations of autobiographic and collective narratives, memories and concepts. 38
The BelgianArtPrize is an historic, biennial Award for Contemporary Art in Belgium, organised and coproduced since 1950 by La Jeune Peinture Belge / De Jonge Belgische Schilderkunst and BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts, and benefits from a structural partnership with ING. It aims to stimulate talented leading artists living and working in Belgium, contributing to the development of their careers and international visibility. In 2017, the finalists of the BelgianArtPrize were Edith Dekyndt, Denicolai & Provoost, Otobong Nkanga and Maarten Vanden Eynde, who won the ING Public Prize. The next edition of the BelgianArtPrize will take place in 2019. The four finalists will be announced in April 2018 and invited to conceive new works that will be exhibited at BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts from March 15 to May 26, 2019. At Hôtel de la Poste, Otobong Nkanga presents a video that is part of her installation, In Pursuit of Bling, first shown in 2014 at the eighth Berlin Biennale. In Pursuit of Bling is the confluence of several research avenues into the numerous metamorphoses that natural resources undergo during their transition from raw material to finished product. The video, showing Nkanga presenting shiny objects, refers to the historical connection that exists between past and present, and to our insatiable appetite for raw materials – as well as to our desire to turn these raw materials into commodities, to make nature into a commodity. In addition to the mineral story and references to history in general, the video embodies the constant quest and strive to embellish ourselves through the use of minerals.

Pierre Jean Giloux, Invisible Cities, 2015-2017 Project curated by Gregory Lang Stand D.11 Invisible Cities is a tetralogy inspired by in the 1960-70s Metabolist utopist movement. This cycle of films questions the notion of landscape and brings together several portraits of Japanese towns: Tokyo, Yokohama, Kyoto, Osaka. It is close to what is called “augmented reality” as it combines 3D or 2D images with images of social and urban reality, filmed or photographed. The choice of showing Japan through hybrid plastic shapes results from the use of the technological tools that constitute it, with the goal of recreating it. These eclectic cities, sorts of laboratories where architecture and urbanism are in perpetual evolution, entail a dialogue between reality and fiction. The digital techniques used to create this project are based on the hybridization of photographic, filmed and computer-generated images. The cycle terminates with the film Stations, a real and fictional travel in urban and natural landscapes of the Kansai region. The film explores the utopia of the Metabolist movement in a virtual reconstruction of the “Osaka 70” World Exhibition. It invites us to a memorial journey into the historical sites of Nara and Kyoto, towards the doors of a virtual town on the Biwa Lake, elaborated following the guidelines of the Kyoto Protocol. 40

Now that a broader aknowledgment that we are living in an age shaped by digital technologies has taken place, that “digital aware art” has found its way in the global art world and market in stable, material, post-digital forms, what’s emerging in terms of aesthetics, poetics, formal choices, politics and economics?

Talks room (Hôtel de la Poste - Tour & Taxis) An integral part of the exhibition Mystic Properties, these conversations will elaborate on what it might mean to “own” an artwork, focusing on immaterial and instruction-based projects, reflecting on “regimes of ownership” in different cultures, introducing “acquisition scores”, and exploring the motif of “belonging” and “possession”. These conversations feature projects for which the display in the exhibition space is but one component, and which need an additional discursive or performative situation to be fully understood. Predominantly, but not exclusively, the conversations will be moderated by exhibition curator Elena Sorokina (see biography p. 29).

Vermeir & Heiremans The videos and installations of the artist duo Vermeir & Heiremans investigate the complex relationship between economy, spatiality, and social reality in today’s highly globalised world. Focusing on the mechanisms of financial structures and the ways in which they produce and generate cultural processes, the duo raises questions about the ever-growing entanglement between urban development, social status, and fetishism. The artists employ financial tools, historical references, technology, and cinematic language to reflect on social codes as well as on the production of value in today’s artistic and non-artistic realms.

Shifting values towards an updated role of art In 1994, artist Michelangelo Pistoletto wrote his “Progetto Arte” manifesto stating “Art is the most sensitive and complete expression of thought and it is time for artists to take upon themselves the responsibility of ensuring communication between all other human activities (...). In other words, all aspects of the social fabric.” Settled in Arles, the LUMA foundation is exemplifying this injunction through the building of a unique and ambitious project binding art, environmental issues, human rights, education and culture. Through the presentation of Atelier Luma - think tank, production workshop and learning network of the LUMA Foundation - the panel will discuss the increasing engagement of the artistic scene in social and ecological projects and practices, and its given responsibility to think about, act forward and generate a sustainable future.

WIELS Contemporary Art Centre Finissage on Sunday 22 April from 1 pm to 9 pm Unexchangeable The value of an artwork can not be reduced to its price Drawing on a selection of art-historical, museum quality works from the 1980s and 1990s in Belgian private collections, this exhibition narrates this pivotal moment in the history of art when artists, making use of concepts such as simulacrum, simulation and value, tinkered with the paradigm of the artwork’s unique character. The show features 75 artworks from 35 collections. S.M.A.K. Hiwa K Hiwa K transforms experiences and testimonials into new situations that provide a highly individual view of globalisation and its impact on our world. S.M.A.K. takes Hiwa K’s presentation at Documenta 14 in Kassel and Athens, where he highlighted the absurd and fragmented experience of a refugee existence, as the basis for a more extensive exhibition on his recent video works, performances and installations. Artist: Hiwa K Curated by Martin Germann

Conceptual works from the 1970s The show is intended to provide an insight into the Peruvian artist’s conceptual work on the basis of the installations 4 Mensajes (1974) and Borges (1974), plus a series of drawings and objects from the 1970s. The area around Rue Dansaert (Brussels 1000) is the most interesting place to shop for Belgian (and other) designers. Most shops are open between 11 am and 6:30 pm from Monday to Saturday. They are all located in the city centre. On Sundays, the places to be are Sablon and the flea market at Place du Jeu de Balle. With Dansaert Brut, the Dansaert shopping district organizes in its shops a course of art brut. In total, nearly 40 businesses temporarily exhibit works outside cultural norms, produced by artists with mental disabilities. The exhibition, which began in mid-April, will end on May 17 with a charity auction at MAD Brussels (Fashion and Design Center). * Businesses marked with an asterisk participate in Dansaert Brut.

Dansaert Brut
The Dansaert shopping organizes in its shops a course of art brut. In total, nearly 40 businesses temporarily exhibit works outside cultural norms, produced by artists with mental disabilities. The exhibition, which began in mid-April, will end on May 17 with a charity auction at MAD Brussels (Fashion and Design Center). Businesses marked with an asterisk in the Shopping List participate in Dansaert Brut.
