Tracing a timeline that spans the beginnings of conceptual art to neo-conceptualism, via the twentieth-century avant-garde, this section aims to excavate and highlight surprising, unknown and original practices that have not yet broken into the art historical mainstream. Curated by Jens Hoffmann and Piper Marshall Ownership is the most intimate relationship one can have to objects. Not that they come alive in us; it is us who comes alive in them. â€“ Walter Benjamin As part of its landmark 35th edition, Art Brussels presents an intimate exhibition bringing together personal objects, relics, souvenirs, and artefacts from the private collections of over seventy artists, all of whom are represented by galleries participating in Art Brussels 2017. Installed in a newly designed display that evokes historical cabinets of curiosities, with their mix of objects relating to such diverse fields as archaeology, geology, natural history, and religious relics, the exhibition is both an archive and a theater of personal memories. 25

The objects on view represent an approach to collecting and the value of things that emphasizes emotional or sentimental significance, and individual histories and memories. They include family heirlooms that have been passed on from generation to generation, much-loved books and records, pieces of furniture from childhood, favorite items of clothing, obscure salt and pepper shakers, even the jaw of a shark. Each object conveys something of the particular history of the artist who collected and preserved it. We most often associate collecting with museums or wealthy individuals, yet anyone can collect anything imaginable, from old toys to cookbooks, vintage cars, cocktail shakers, antique globes, historical maps, autographs, or baseball cards. What makes us hold on to objects that might be totally insignificant to others? They might remind us of someone important to us, or recall a special period of our life. They might connect the past with the present, or fill a void, or offer stability and security in uncertain times. Collections also play a role in the formation of identities, both personal and collective. We can look back at the objects of those who came before us to trace our own histories and induce a sense of cultural belonging. As many passionate 26

collectors have admitted, collecting can become addictive, as treacherous as a dependency on alcohol, drugs, or gambling. For many such collectors, the activity of finding an object can feel more important than actually owning it. Once collecting becomes compulsive, we call it hoarding, a pathological behavior that denies the possibility of letting go of even the most insignificant item. Yet collecting can also be socially affirming, as people frequently bond over their collections, perhaps making them available to the public for education or entertainment, or sharing them with other, equally passionate collectors. We all collect things, even if unintentionally, as with for instance photographic images, or memorized poems or jokes. When it comes to the deliberate collecting of contemporary art, various rational objectives are usually at play. The individual investor-collector is looking for work that will accrue in value. Speculation, the so-called “flipping of art pieces, has become a modus operandi many collectors looking for fast financial returns. For an artwork to enter a museum collection, the criteria are generally that it must affirm the forms and ideas of past artworks, yet at the same time deviate sufficiently from what has come before that it can be considered novel, fresh, and inventive. 27

Whereas a demand for the new drives the contemporary art world, mementos represent instead the precious, the old, the re-found, the recuperation of the cast-off. Mementos form an alternative to how value is gauged, suggesting that the worth of an object rests in its relationship to a certain individual subject. And this relationship becomes quite interesting when the memento in question belongs to an artist. Displaying private items in the often-abstracting context of an art fair proposes a different economy than that of investment in art objects for financial gain, or museum acquisition in the interest of creating an artistic canon. The items exhibited together in Mementos: Artists’ Souvenirs, Artefacts, and Other Curiosities demonstrate how the personal object can push up against the contemporary social construction of the commodity-artwork. The resulting friction reveals an exploration of what is otherwise obfuscated, stressing what the anthropologist Igor Kopytoff described as the strain between the individual and the global culture of goods. While the network of artist, dealer, and institution brings value to artworks, the memento may have little to no monetary value and yet commands emotional attachment. It prompts questions related to privatization: What do we accept to be hidden from view? How is the inaccessibility of a curiosity 28

Some mementos conjure everyday activities. The many holes puncturing the surface of a wooden incense burner invoke the senses, perhaps a wafting of perfumed air that masks sweat from a hard day’s work and suggests rituals of de-stressing. A small copper table bell, its clapper long gone, calls up the sound of a dinner yet to be served and eaten. These collected fragments, accumulated over time and each taken from the atelier of an artist, tell stories of workspaces for creatives. Mementos: Artists’ Souvenirs, Artefacts, and Other Curiosities unlocks the barrier between the private (the personal objects) and the public (the artworks on view at the fair), putting a new frame on the larger context of economic and political structures. It specifically examines society’s enduring fascination with and fixation on the material, which seems so fundamental to how we experience the world. One might say that our economy is based on the transformation of material from one state into another, for instance a piece of wood turned into a chair, or pieces of silver into a ring. Looking at objects and materials this way, the two prevalent ideologies of the twentieth century, capitalism and communism, seem in fact not that different, 29

different from or similar to an artwork in storage? When does curiosity disclose something unexpected?

Artistic Projects

both being focused on the production of goods, albeit one for individual advantage the other for communal benefit. Yet there is another kind of economy of objects, namely that of immateriality and memory. All the objects in this exhibition carry highly personal stories, anecdotes, narratives, and fascinations. The Politics of Things is a series of talks, conversations and readings that will accompany the exhibition Mementos: Artists’ Souvenirs, Artefacts, and Other Curiosities organized by Jens Hoffmann and Piper Marshall. The talks will bring together artists’ reflections on the relationship between art and non-art objects as well as anthropological and psychoanalytical readings of the items on display. About Jens Hoffmann Jens Hoffmann is an exhibition maker and writer. He is currently Director of Exhibitions and Public Programs at the Jewish Museum in New York, Senior Curator at Large at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit and Co-Artistic Director of Front International: Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art. Venice Biennale The Belgian Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale Dirk Braeckman & Eva Wittocx Stibbe Lounge

Artistic Projects

In anticipation of his commission at the Belgian Pavilion in Venice this year, curated by Eva Wittocx, Dirk Braeckman presents a large range of prints from the Sisyphus series from 2005 in the lounge of fair partner Stibbe. Dirk Braeckman’s work brings stillness to today’s steady tide of images. Working with analogue photography, he explores the boundaries of his medium and challenges photographic conventions. Experiment is crucial to both their registration by the camera and their subsequent processing. The exposure, manipulation and development of negative and photographic paper consistently results in new and unique images. His subjects are recognizable, yet flirt with representation, abstraction and the reality of what is shown. Dirk Braeckman looks for open images with a special charge, which withhold as well as divulge information, giving them the power to hold the viewer’s gaze. Intimacy and distance combine in his photographic images to make a private, secluded world whose meaning remains undefined. The Belgian Pavilion is presenting a series of monumental prints on baryta paper. The unique, analogue prints are made in Braeckman’s darkroom, with the artist sometimes creating multiple images from the same source.

38

Conferences will further develop ideas around both the Belgian Pavilion and the 57th Venice Biennale in the Stibbe Lounge at the fair. Art Brussels is a proud friend of the Belgian Pavilion. With the indispensable support of Stibbe.

fédération waLLonie BruxeLLes Artistic Projects

Michel Mazzoni, Amorces, curated by Frédéric Collier Stand D.31 Michel Mazzoni is a visual artist who uses the photographic medium to explore its material essence. Ever seeking the limits of the image, his work is positioned at the boundary of photography and painting, figurative art and abstraction. It’s a fragmentary aesthetic that blurs the figurative referent and reveals the materiality of a document that becomes an object. Conscious of the precariousness of both printing methods and short-term broadcasting, Michel Mazzoni questions the fragility of images. Believing that photography is not a medium intended to account for what is real or even to propose a faithful representation of reality, Mazzoni’s work does not adhere to a concrete view. His work proceeds by subtraction, removing or revealing details by using techniques such as overexposure, underexposure, alteration of the surface, inversion, saturation. Amorces refers to the beginning and end of film reels, unsuitable for recording. It also refers to the initial phase of an action, a first draft that is yet to be completed. The selection and order of the photographs has been done according to the artist’s specific criteria, which are not communicated to viewers so that they can create their own paths, connections and distances. There is here a desire to give a more poetic dimension to the reading of images than a merely factual or narrative one. 40

The BeLFius lounge Artistic Projects

One line. Infinite connections. The many stories of the Belfius Art Collection. The Belfius Lounge In the course of over 50 years of promoting and collecting Belgian art, the Belfius Art Collection has gathered works spanning many art movements: from various established artists who were considered the rebels of their eras to today’s avant-garde and tomorrow’s promising talent. But although these artists lived in different times and ages, there are many lines that bind them together: their lifelines, the lifelines of their oeuvres and, of course, the lifeline represented by the Belfius Art Collection. Curated especially for Art Brussels, Belfius Wealth Management exhibits an exclusive selection of this collection in a stunning fair lounge, where this multitude of lines – representing times, tastes and generations – come together. You, as a true art fan and collector, are cordially invited to follow their many courses. Embark on your journey with the arresting works of the 16th and 17th century masters Jacob Jordaens and Jan Metsys. Then, contemplate the groundbreaking paintings of James Ensor, Theo Van Rysselberghe, Fernand Khnopff and George Minne – a coterie known as ‘Les XX’, who revolutionary changed the ways of promoting art. Eager to transcend reality? Surrealists René Magritte, Paul Delvaux and Marcel Marien will help you unlock the boundaries of your imagination. Afterwards, you can dive into New Vision 42

Of course, each of these masters has ignited the imaginations of subsequent generations. Their legacies are a source of inspiration for contemporary artists like Wim Delvoye, Jan Fabre and Rinus Van de Velde, who are at the beating heart of Belfius’ exhibition. Immerse yourself into their world, where artist and work are even bound more profoundly. As you are about to witness, to be a human is to be a creator, in our ability to blur the lines between reality and the beyond. Belfius Wealth Management will contribute to the Art Brussels Talks programme by hosting several conferences in the Belfius Lounge, inviting in-house specialists and independent speakers to address topics about the constitution, the management and the transmission of an art collection.

The PoLitics of things

Talks

The Politics of Things is a series of talks, conversations and readings that will accompany the exhibition Mementos: Artists’ Souvenirs, Artefacts, and other Curiosities organized by Jens Hoffmann and Piper Marshall. The curators asked over 70 artists participating in Art Brussels 2017 to display a personal, intimate and perhaps even secret object that they have an emotional relationship with and to describe what that object means to them. Personal objects such as an old toy, a rare book, a vintage photograph, a collection of coins, porcelain figurines and others do not necessarily carry a commercial value but often hold a strong emotional or sentimental value for those who own them. Within the often-abstract environment of an art fair this exhibition is both, a look into a number of individual stories connected to the artists' personal and private life and an exploration of the commodification of art that is at the heart of any art fair. The exhibition unlocks the barrier between the private (the personal objects) and the public (the artworks on view at the fair) and our own individual relationship to both within the context of larger economic and political structure that examines society’s enduring fascination and fixation on the material world. The talks will bring together artists' reflections on the relationship between art and non-art objects as well as anthropological and psychoanalytical readings of the items on display. 48

The talks are foreseen within the Mementos exhibition space, located in Hôtel de la Poste.
