How You Show It
F
ashion usually refers to distinctive trends in look as well as prevailing styles in behavior. I used to think that some individuals simply have a knack for being fashionable. I have since come to the conclusion that fashionistas really work to create their look. They read fashion blogs and magazines, have a penchant for shopping, and are aware of the latest trends. Their style seems effortless and confident. It’s not easy. This issue of Artful Living is dedicated to fashion and is packed with the best in style, from clothing, shoes and accessories to homes, fabrics and interior design. Our feature brings to you freshest fashion from Spring 2013 Mercedez-Benz Fashion Week. Two-piece suits, ladylike skirts and black leather are just some of the looks that will be on trend for Spring. On our cover is designer Jason Wu’s finale gown, shot by amazing fashion photographer, Jamie Beck. This issue also includes gift ideas for the holiday season, the best of travel and home design. The real-estate market is showing major signs of improvement. Be sure to check out the outstanding new properties available from Lakes Sotheby’s International Realty. Remember that fashion starts with you. Trends may fade, but style is eternal. Being fashionable is all about how you show it. Cheers, Frank

Stylish Spirits What’s not to love about a wine endorsed by both fashionisto Karl Lagerfeld and vino virtuoso Robert Parker? | By Maggie Happe
C
hanel’s quiet acquisition of Rauzan-Ségla in 1994 illustrated one of its many tasteful ventures in the world of true luxury. Located in the Margaux region of France, the winery has been producing first-class vino since it was founded by Pierre de Rauzan in 1661. In 2009, the chateau produced its most luxurious collaboration to date: the 2009 Rauzan-Ségla, bottled by the winery with a label designed and autographed by Chanel superstar Karl Lagerfeld in honor of the 350th anniversary of the chateau and the high-quality vintage. The label features a sketch of the chateau drawn by Lagerfeld in a gorgeous palette of magenta, sky blue, forest green and ivory hues with his trademark signature in the lower right corner. And what’s inside is just as breathtaking. In tune with rave tasting notes from international critics, renowned U.S. wine critic Robert Parker describes the vintage as revealing “extraordinary density, power and richness … This large estate appears to have produced their greatest wine since 1986.” The world has come to expect nothing less than exceptional from Chanel, and wine and style connoisseurs alike will not be disappointed by this iconic bottle of wine that combines the best of Old World craft excellence and a symbol of modern design.

n the quietly tongue-in-cheek air the company is known for, Stubbs & Wootton’s Undecided Slippers will be with you every step of the way until Election Day. The navy velvet slippers are embroidered with the classic Democratic donkey and Republican elephant in red, white and blue. These lush slippers continue a line of quirky footwear featuring contrasting symbols, including Yes and No, X and O, and Night and Day. While the shoe style is nothing new (the velvet slipper was popularized by Prince Albert during the 19th century), Stubbs & Wootton founder Percy Steinhart shares his take with the company’s wide range of subtly satirical slippers for style mavens with a sense of humor. And never fear if your mind is made up: Stubbs & Wootton also makes slippers for the more decisive patriot, with dual donkeys or elephants embroidered in gold thread.

Beheading Bubbly A French tradition is the perfect excuse to celebrate. | By Hayley Dulin
L
’art du sabrage, or the art of sabrage, can be traced to the sword-wielding cavalry of Napoleon Bonaparte’s army during the French Revolution. Celebrating victory, they would use their sabers to open bottles of champagne and cry: “Champagne! In victory one deserves it; in defeat one needs it.” Today, why would anyone take a blade to champagne, you ask? Frankly, certain occasions just call for it. Nothing could be more dramatic than the chest-pumping thrill of lopping off the cork of a champagne bottle in front of wide-eyed spectators. So, at your next soiree, why not try this much more exciting technique of freeing bubbly from the bottle — you will undoubtedly be the talk of the party. Word of advice? Disregard all intention to sip directly from the bottle, or your glorious moment in the spotlight may come to a disastrous end.

Run the dull side of the knife blade flat along the neck of the bottle, in a straight line up, striking the neck ring with force. Note: There is no need to be picky about the “saber” — or in most cases knife; it just needs to be heavy. If everything goes according to plan, the ring should pop right off and very little champagne should be lost. Voilà!

Precious Pieces Famed jewelry maven Ippolita hosts an evening at JB Hudson. | By Maggie Happe
J
ewelry designer Ippolita stood on the grand staircase anchoring JB Hudson’s sky-high ceilings and aisles of glass cases filled with gleaming jewels. Below, throngs of people expectantly waited to hear the story behind her creative designs. As questions from the audience began to pour in, one guest called out, “Tell us about your life!” Without missing a beat, an adjacent bystander yelled out, “It’s definitely full of color…” Similar to her designs, Ippolita’s life is colored by her passion for her jewelry and the women who wear it. JB Hudson and Blythe Brenden hosted Ippolita for an evening filled with gorgeous jewels, wonderful conversation, and a rare chance to sit and chat with the Italian-born designer whose creations have been worn by style icons all over the world. The event showcased the unique aspects of Ippolita’s designs. For one, thanks to her background in sculpture (Ippolita received a baccalaureate in sculpture from the Florentine Istituto D’Arte), she insists that each piece of jewelry be created by hand from beginning to end. “We want each piece to show that it is handmade — each gemstone is hand cut, every gold chain is formed and soldered by hand, and everything is crafted to stand the test of time,” she explains. Ippolita’s sincere appreciation for materials and genuine passion for creating jewelry that real women want to wear are apparent in every earring, bracelet and necklace. And whether it’s dangling from your ears or adorning your wrist, a little color — and a little Ippolita — is a welcome accessory in any woman’s life.

Seventh Heaven A downtown Minneapolis destination offers an unmatched experience. |
T
he glamour of an exclusive Miami club, the frenzied kinetic energy of a South Beach dance floor and the aesthetic inspiration from a Twin Cities fine-dining restaurant combine at Seven Sushi Ultralounge and Skybar in Minneapolis. And with so many elements, the Seven experience truly is what you make it. Owners David and Alexus Koch come from an extensive background in the hospitality industry; Seven is the latest in a string of top-notch restaurants and clubs, including Bellanotte, Escape and South Beach, that flow freely from fine dining to nightclub. The inspiration? David’s frequent trips to southern Florida left him with an itching desire to bring the same energy and heat to his hometown. “I saw that energy every weekend and wanted to bring some of that home — so when it was the dead of winter, we wouldn’t be stuck in the freezing cold without some warmth and

zest for life,” he says, smiling at Alexus. The husband-and-wife team light up with an identical gleam of passion in their eyes when asked about the philosophy behind Seven. “We are your event destination of Minneapolis,” Alexus states matter-of-factly. “The whole place is an experience, from the steakhouse atmosphere on the first floor to the sushi ultralounge to the skybar on the roof — we want people to dip their toe into each level, to be able to find whatever it is they are looking for.” “We always want to be the best in the hospitality industry,” adds David. “It’s not a job, to be taking care of other people and creating a unique experience for any individual that walks through the door. What could be more rewarding than that?” Step through the threshold to the sky-high floors of Seven, and you may as well be stepping into the Kochs’ own home for dinner and drinks — so stay awhile, because it’s a pretty fabulous invitation.

Mary Leonard of Chocolat Celeste makes cacao dreams come true. | by Maggie Happe
“
Giving away chocolate is memorable; there is a lasting impression when someone experiences a tremendous flavor,” explains Mary Leonard, founder of Chocolat Celeste. Her bold flavors and gourmet chocolate certainly have left a lasting impression on various nationwide publications. The Twin Cities chocolatier was named one of the 10 best emerging chocolatiers in America by Condé Nast in 2004 and claimed the City Pages title of “Best Chocolate” earlier this year. And Leonard herself was included in USA Today’s list of the top 50 chocolatiers in America in 2010. “What I do here in the Twin Cities is very rare — crafting fresh chocolate with real whipping cream butter and ingredients only from sustainable farms. It absolutely makes a difference in the flavor experience,” explains Leonard. “I use a unique couverture process that results in a chocolate with a glassy, bright finish that glistens like jewelry.” Recognized for its deliciously unique flavors as well as customized finishes for brands, companies and gifts, Chocolat Celeste introduces new flavors and techniques each season. “The balsamic-vinegar dark chocolate has a wonderful tanginess,” Leonard says. “Another autumn favorite is pumpkin chocolate, with a luscious white-chocolate center and the flavor of cinnamon — it literally tastes like pumpkin pie made with dark chocolate.”

While some medical spas seem to focus on a “luxury experience” or daily discount deals, we see “results” as the priority. Carillon is the longest continually-operating skin and body care clinic in the Twin Cities. The clinic is owned and overseen by the board certified plastic surgeons at Minneapolis Plastic Surgery, Ltd. Our registered nurses, licensed aestheticians and dedicated staff are fully trained with an average of 16 years experience. They use state-of-the-art equipment in fully licensed facilities. Surprisingly, those are standards few of our competitors can match. Of course we also provide amenities, surroundings and attention that will add to your comfort. But quality aesthetic care comes first. This is about your appearance and your needs. We’re here to listen. Stop in to discuss how we can help you achieve your goals. When results matter, come to Carillon. We’ll make the visit about your looks, not ours.

agerfeld for H&M, Jason Wu for Target — collaborations with discount retailers have become the norm for designers looking to create affordable lines with mass appeal. Upscale discount retailer Target and luxury merchant Neiman Marcus have teamed up to create perhaps the most extensive and high-profile collaboration yet: the Target + Neiman Marcus Holiday Collection, in association with 24 of America’s most prominent CFDA designers. The designers were enlisted to create a collection of more than 50 eclectic holiday gifts, from apparel to home décor to sporting goods, and were reportedly given free rein to work in either their specialty area or to attempt to master an entirely different field. The combined influence of the behemoth Target and the classic Neiman Marcus brands enabled them to draw from top designers, attracting a group that includes the likes of Marc Jacobs, Alice + Olivia, Oscar de la Renta, Rodarte, Prabal Gurung, and Marchesa. Kathee Tesija, executive vice president of merchandising at Target, explains that “the holidays are a magical time of year, and we know that guests count on Target and Neiman Marcus for standout gifts to make the season memorable.” The collection will be released December 1, just in time for holiday shopping. You can catch a glimpse later this fall when the preview is revealed, but for now, start making your wish list and take comfort knowing the perfect holiday gift this year will be both affordable and luxurious.

Scenes at Bergdorf Your coffee table just got a bit more stylish. | By Maggie Happe
T
he extraordinary fantasy scenes in the windows of Bergdorf Goodman draw thousands of windowshoppers each year. They mill along the Fifth Avenue block between 57th and 58th streets, striving for a better view of the larger-than-life displays that fill the department store’s windows. For those who can’t make the pilgrimage, Bergdorf teamed up with Assouline and photographer Ricky Zehavi to create Windows at Bergdorf Goodman, a spectacular volume filled with photographs of the past decade’s displays in all their glory. Playful, luxurious and overflowing tend to characterize the scenes, filled with anything from boxing polar bears to a mannequin with a 15-foot arm. As window creator David Hoey explains, “We’re drawn to extremes here. Minimalism is great. Maximalism is too. What we avoid is medium-ism.” Bottom line: Windows at Bergdorf Goodman is window-shopping in its most fabulous form.

The Great Estate Tap into the estate-jewelry market to buy and sell rare and distinctive pieces. | By Ivy Gracie
W
hat’s happening in your jewelry box? Are there pieces you never wear? Pieces you’ve inherited that just don’t match your style? Is it missing that one-of-a-kind statement piece that induces covetous glances from lunching ladies or fellow gala goers? It might be time to delve into the world of estate jewelry. Defined as anything that has been previously owned, estate jewelry has been gaining traction in the bling biz, and with good reason. From an economic perspective, selling previously owned jewelry has moved into the mainstream. And from a style standpoint, estate jewelry offers a wealth of rare and distinctive pieces rarely found at conventional jewelry stores. “Anything vintage — clothing, cars, home furnishings — is very hot right now,” explains Kate Peterson, owner of Performance Concepts and associate with Geolat Companies, a Dallas-based appraisal and jewelry-brokerage firm. “It’s among the largest selling and fastest growing consumer trends in the fashion world.” But for those looking to sell their estate pieces, options have often been less than lucrative. “When people started selling their jewelry a few years ago, in many cases it was being bought for parts, for scrap metal,” Peterson recalls. “If you have a broken earring, that’s understandable. But spectacular pieces of vintage jewelry — Cartier and Tiffany — were being destroyed. And when a piece of fine jewelry is sold for scrap and parts, the owner is only getting a fraction of what it might really be worth. ” So two years ago, Peterson linked up with Patti Geolat, a world-renowned estate-jewelry appraiser and broker/founder/CEO at Geolat Companies, and the pair created a new business model for the estate-jewelry market. “We go into very select jewelry stores for three-day events,” Peterson explains. “We’re looking to buy pieces from people who want to sell. At the same time, we offer a magnificent collection of vintage and estate jewelry to people who are looking for unusual, period or previously owned pieces.” By partnering with Peterson and Geolat, jewelers can offer their clients — both buyers and sellers — a rare brand of expertise and inventory. “We treat clients more than fairly, and we respect their pieces and the stories behind them,” Peterson notes. “Every piece has a life and a story — they’re the stories I get to tell at the counter.” But the stories aren’t limited to the pieces being sold; they’re about the people buying them as well. “Oftentimes, pieces in our showcase will speak to someone and they won’t know why,” Peterson says. “But when we start talking with clients, it becomes very clear — it reminds them of their grandmother or the stone color is something they’ve always loved.” And when it comes to matching piece and person, she’s simultaneously optimistic and matter-of-fact: “There’s the right person out there for everything.”
Join Peterson and Geolat of Geolat Companies on November 12-14 for the premier showing of fine collectible estate jewelry at Scheherazade. Scheherazade, 3525 W. 69th St., Edina, 952-926-2455, sjewelers.com

Minneapolis creative Dan Raphael on the artist’s way |
50 Artful Living
| Autumn 2012
by Maggie Happe
“
There is a societal suggestion, something about us as a culture, that discourages people from becoming artists,” says Minneapolis-based artist Dan Raphael. “The fact is that nothing has a guarantee, and you’ve got to be something. The most valuable thing in existing is to be fueled by things that fulfill you — no matter what that is.” As we sit in vintage armchairs surrounded by paintings, sipping iced tea on a muggy summer afternoon, Raphael is the embodiment of this philosophy — and he’s stepping out onto the national art scene to prove it. The plush oriental rugs and potted plants in Raphael’s upper-level Uptown Minneapolis apartment (which doubles as his studio) do not detract from the abundance of whimsical and complex artwork covering the walls of the bungalow-style space. An entire wall features painted vines with tiny, curious birds surrounding the rainbow palette of paint accompanying a half-finished canvas. After an hours-long talk with Raphael, there remains the indubitable sense that even after a lifetime of conversation you’ll be no closer to understanding and interpreting the maze of thoughts and creativity swirling beneath his fine blond hair. Raphael’s wide variety of art reflects this complexity, not only in terms of subject matter and medium but also in the abstract backgrounds of his paintings, often inspired by memories of his childhood. He incorporates the past and present into the motif background of each painting. In addition to nostalgia and the world around him, impressionist artists such as Renoir heavily influence Raphael.
Raphael grudgingly acknowledges the inherent desire of the public to know more about the artist behind their favorite paintings and pieces. As a child, he enjoyed drawing as well as taking photos, experimenting often with film photography. First showing his work in the late ’90s at local coffee shops, Raphael gradually edged onto the Twin Cities art radar with his swirling landscapes and colorful watercolors. Now he’s landed on the national scene, emblemized by his invitation to be part of a national juried showing in Riverhead, N.Y., this summer. Having no formal training (other than some time spent at a trade school learning how to do hair) and after holding various odd jobs, Raphael is committed to the importance of fueling your creative passions, regardless of your day job. “People can have their creativity quashed if they push it down,” he says. “It’s vital to keep your life creative.” “I strive for timelessness in my art,” Raphael explains. “I avoid cars or modern architecture — anything that will automatically date the piece.” His drive to create beautiful artwork is an inherent part of his lifestyle and his choice to become an artist. And make no mistake — Raphael is aware that it is a difficult decision for many aspiring artists. “When younger people ask me about [becoming] an artist, the first thing I tell them is to decide that you are an artist. Are you an artist? If you are, make that choice. Start doing it, start talking about it and eventually opportunities manifest themselves,” he says.” Available at Griffin Gallery, 5222 West 78th Street, Edina, 952-844-9884, griffingalleryfineart.com

Inside Elizabeth and James The Olsen twins play it cool at New York Fashion Week. | By Wendy Lubovich
I
t’s 15 minutes before the start of their fashion show, and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are hanging out along a leafy street in the West Village, catching a breath of fresh air beside a brick-faced photo studio. Not overly coiffed or primped, they look perfectly at ease: Mary-Kate in a loose, emerald trench coat and lean, leather pants with flats, and Ashley in a black jacket, long-tailed chiffon shirt and slippers. Sporting little makeup and a loose bun or ponytail, they look completely cool, absolutely effortless. It’s a stark contrast to the pack of fashion editors and buyers rushing through the door moments later. Teetering on the cobbled street in their tall heels and short pencil skirts, they are long-lashed and red-lipped — photo-ready in their Fashion Week frenzy. Somehow the Olsen twins float above the chaos, which just might be the secret to their success. For more than six years now, the media moguls have been honing their own unique sense of style and creating an enviable

fashion empire. They recently won the coveted Council of Fashion Designers of America Womenswear Designer of the Year award for their upscale brand, The Row. They also have T-shirt line StyleMint, the Olsenboye line at JCPenney, and the contemporary line Elizabeth and James. With no formal fashion training, the Olsens have gone from style setters to style makers, paying close attention to fine tailoring and exquisite detail, all with a low-key vibe. Mary-Kate plugs in her iPhone, flooding the room with tracks from Emmylou Harris and Willie Nelson. One by one the models march in, infusing the space with an easy elegance that feels like a cooling balm. Whisper-light linen trenches are paired with flat sandals and roomy shorts. Long, shawl-collared smoking jackets float over taffeta slim pants, accented with wooden bangles. There is a refined, worldly discipline to the looks, conjuring up images of a walk in a Japanese garden or a stroll along a Caribbean beach.
Because the tailoring is so quiet, the rich fabrics flourish freely. Tone-on-tone textural brocades carry a vintage vibe in narrow trousers and a sleeveless shift top. Rich black and white silks are softly draped, wrapped with luxurious origami-tied waists. They are the kind of clothes you want to put on in the morning and are happy to stay in all day — cool, comfortable, at ease. And that’s exactly how the fashion show feels on this fresh fall day, a delightfully unconstructed event. Absent are the jammedpacked, celebrity-seated front rows. Gone too is the crush of fashion photographers jockeying for a good shot. Instead, it’s just Mary-Kate and Ashley perched alongside the audience, quietly watching what appears to be an impromptu show. Afterward, the diminutive designers answer questions and shake hands. No grand bow, no grand finale. They are quietly confident and elegantly nonchalant. Because for them, it’s the beauty of the clothes that does the talking.

legant. Refined. Fancy. Ask people to describe French cooking, and you can predict the adjectives that come to mind — and the ones that don’t: humble, simple, unaffected. True, dishes like smoked quail roulade and venison tournedos rossini won’t dispel any preconceptions. But guests at chef extraordinaire Tim McKee’s recent Grande Chasse game dinner at Salut Bar Americain in St. Paul partook in a culinary tradition far earthier, heartier and truer-to-French character than historical blips like Nouvelle cuisine.
“Hunting in France is an institution,” says McKee. “The traditions are ancient, and people of all classes and economic strata share in them. Some regions, like the Sologne, can’t even be discussed without bringing up wild boar. Pheasant hunting abounds in Normandy. Stag are stalked in the Pyrenees, quail in Provence. And France’s tradition of hound-driven hunts is every bit as rich as England’s.” Yet the menu that McKee and Salut chefs Anthony Leonhardi (St. Paul) and CJ Van Proosdy (Edina) created reflected other influences as well, including the bounty of autumn in America and the riches of locally sourced

Traveled Treasures Design guru Robb Whittlef shares his secrets for how to handpick and display remembrances of our journeys. | by Ivy Gracie
T
ravel offers us the chance to shake the Etch-A-Sketch of our everyday lives, to move from the ordinary to the extraordinary. We explore new landscapes, languages, cultures and customs, and recreate ourselves through recreation. So is it any wonder we treasure the souvenirs of our sojourns? After all, they’re happy reminders of who we were and how we felt at a special time, in a special place. But how do you choose the perfect piece? And how you incorporate it into your home without creating a culture clash? Robb Whittlef offers some advice. As president and co-owner of Historic Studio in Minneapolis, Whittlef is always on the hunt for one-of-a-kind and antique pieces to stock the warehouse and show room he created with his brother Mike to serve the Twin Cities interior-design community. Thanks to his second gig as a product designer for numerous international clients, the world is his oyster. “I’m in Europe about a week and a half
68 Artful Living

every month — Belgium, France, Spain, Italy,” he says. “And I develop product in India, Asia, mainland China and Vietnam. Mexico, South America — I’m kind of all over the world.” For Whittlef, finding rare and distinctive treasures means veering off the beaten path into the country to the old homes and barns where dealers house their wares. And the payoff isn’t guaranteed, he notes: “A third of the time it’s wonderful beyond your imagination, a third of the time you find a couple of things, and a third of the time it’s the dreadful dregs of nothing and you think, ‘What the heck did we just do?’” But, he says, a few things can tip the scales in favor of success: “If you connect with a local who speaks the language fluently and shares your passion, you’re going to have far more access and get a better price than you’re ever going to get as a random American walking around saying, ‘How much is this?’ You may as well have a target on your wallet that says, ‘Empty me.’”
Whittlef says finding a contact can be as easy as speaking with the staff at your hotel. “It may not be the person working there, but it might be their sister or parent,” he says. “Take them out for a day and buy them lunch or dinner, and they’ll probably be a great sport.” Flea markets and antique shops are great resources for travel treasures. “If you see things that you connect with, try to find out who the dealer is,” Whittlef advises. “Then call them and ask, ‘Do you have a barn? Do you have another area that we can come to?’” When choosing a piece to bring home, Whittlef says logistics should play a major role. “Think about where you are in your trip,” he cautions. “If you find some marble bowls on the first or second day, they may not be the best buy, because you’ll be lugging them around the rest of your trip.” And shipping, customs issues and government regulations can be prohibitive, particularly with larger items. “Unless you’re traveling by private plane or going with a group to buy in a container, bringing home small things always works best.” “Look for anything small and usable,” Whittlef continues. “Vintage books are interesting and beautiful, and fabrics are great, because you can make them into throw pillows or frame them to become an amazing wall piece. Silver candlesticks are beautiful, too.” He adds that smaller pieces are easier to incorporate into existing décors. “If you have an all-Italian house and you find a gigantic Japanese paper screen, it probably won’t make sense, because it will look like you lost your mind on a certain day,” Whittlef says. “Bringing something small from Japan — a beautiful bowl — can merge without everyone thinking you haven’t taken all your meds.” Whittlef says collections are a good way to give smaller items depth and meaning. “I’ve collected miniature urns, antique urns,” he says. “They’re different materials, forms and sizes, and they’re from different countries. They make a great collection.” They’re great icebreakers as well: “When people ask where I got them, there’s a story.” And, according to Whittlef, it’s the story that matters most: “Traveling and finding things and bringing them back — it’s a piece of your life. It’s the stuff that you remember.”

Crossing Over A detailing of designers’ fashionable forays into home furnishings | by Interior Designer Billy Beson, ASID, CID

or years, the savviest fashion designers have been cashing in on their brand recognition and branching out into the home-furnishings genre. The crossover is relatively seamless, because both fashion and interiors incorporate the basic principles of design: balance, proportion, rhythm, emphasis and unity. Combining these principles with their design philosophy allows designers to create products for the home that echo their fashion sense. Giorgio Armani, the king of modern-day fashion, is known for his tailored and understated elegance, with proportion and balance as key elements. Armani’s hallmark is the ability to combine the world’s finest textiles to create simple yet elegant pieces that seem to be timeless. Armani Casa was founded in 2000, providing a platform for Armani to set his vision to the living space: intimate, special, comfortable and sophisticated. Inspired by a number of ethnic and cultural influences, the Missoni family founded its eponymous iconic fashion brand in the early 1950s. They were inspired by a number of ethnic and cultural influences. The brand is known for its exquisite range of coloring, bright and exotic patterns, and superior quality. In 1983, the brand made the transition to producing textiles for the interior-design industry. The unique look is very reminiscent of the 1950s yet remains relevant today. Ralph Lauren and his all-American style came into vogue in the early 1970s. He was the innovator of lifestyle marketing that tells a story. Lauren’s brand is one of the most well-known in the United States, featuring American classics with British flair. It was a natural transition for the company to move into the home-furnishings arena, offering that complete Ralph Lauren lifestyle that has come to define the classic American look. Whether it is in fashion, interiors or architecture, exceptional design always consists of a harmonious mixture of the basic principles. Once that is achieved, the final product will always be alluring.

Boutique Boom
The Mall of America is a high-fashion mecca. | By Maggie Happe
T
he days when one had to jet to New York, London or Paris for the latest styles and fabulous designers have been whisked away with the recent designer influx to the Mall of America. This Twin Cities landmark has been acquiring high-level designers with increasing frequency, filling the majority of its South Avenue with the possibility of expanding into the West Avenue as the mall continues to grow its variety of international designers.
England: There’s no need to cross the pond to find iconic British luxury designer Burberry. Simply visit the designer’s boutique conveniently located in the South Avenue. Dapper Done Right A shirt from Eton exudes everyday elegance. | By Maggie Happe
I
n 1928 in the tiny hillside village of Gånghester, Sweden, David and Annie Pettersson sat with callused fingers at their weathered kitchen table sewing a line of shirts that would become some of the finest men’s dress and leisure shirts in the world. Early lines were popular among the locals for their well-crafted textiles, elegant cuts and superior fabrics that endeared them to anyone in search of a shirt truly worth the investment — and Eton Shirts soon filled that void. Eighty-five years later, Eton continues to be a family-run business crafting fine shirt-wear out of company-owned fabrics such as poplin, oxford and satin. Distinguishing factors include an elaborate finishing process, ensuring the shine of each fabric and decreasing the need for ironing. Each buttonhole is sewn with 160 stitches, and each button is crafted from the elegant resin mother-of-pearl for an unmatched sheen. And for those searching for the perfect collar size, Eton uses four different ones to ensure each shirt fits like a glove. The company still stands by Grandmother Annie’s credo during the production process: “Never hand over an item until you are completely satisfied with it.” Each of Eton’s 11 annual collections follows the theme of a unique color palette, matched painstakingly to pattern, season and fabric for a timeless and genuinely honest shirt. The Red Ribbon Collection for the modern businessman and the Green Ribbon Collection for the versatile modern gentleman follow the themes of this palette for a well-dressed and polished look. As senior adviser Jan Borghardt puts it, “Our shirts will be tomorrow’s vintage.”

Tantalizing Tulum This eco-chic Mexican getaway is the perfect prescription for today’s busy lifestyle. | by Maggie Happe
T
he clicking heels of Louboutins and the rolling wheels of Louis Vuitton suitcases are the musical accompaniment as crowds descend onto the tarmac in Cancun, Mexico. Two weeks later, eco-chic hemp sandals and flowing, white linen caftans will be the outfit of choice as spiritually enlightened travelers board the plane back to the busy city life in New York. Tulum, Mexico, sits in the sun about 75 miles south of Cancun on the Yucatan peninsula. The flight from New York is just under four hours, and a 90-minute cab ride will deposit you on an ivory strip of glowing sand on the Riviera Maya, perfectly situated for a remote getaway. In addition to the sapphire-blue waters and the tropical climate, location is one of the key factors that makes this tiny, off-the-grid resort town a hot spot for anyone in the fashion business. One of the most well-preserved ancient Mayan sites in Mexico, Tulum has developed into a retreat for those who spend their days in the world of materialism to live in an eco-friendly, spiritual paradise and begin their mornings with ocean-side yoga. The star-studded list

of visitors includes celebs Kate Bosworth, Ryan Phillippe, Neil Patrick Harris, Sienna Miller and Evan Rachel Wood, as well as some of the most prominent names in the fashion industry. Creative directors, fashion news directors, stylists, editors and photographers gravitate to the retreat for a slice of the simple life. “People come to Tulum to feel lighter,” explains boutique resort owner Sebastian Sas to the New York Times. “Here, everyone’s barefoot and on bikes. We don’t have heavy music or Lamborghinis.” Tulum maintains its status off the power grid, operating through wind turbines and solar generators — just another facet of its eco-chicness. While Tulum’s new title as the go-to getaway for the fashion crowd may detract from the isolation of its relatively untouched beaches, those looking to rub elbows with some of the most notable names in the multibilliondollar industry will find their haven in the ancient city. Tulum’s years of sending visitors home with a peaceful and relaxed state of mind is not to be overlooked. So, pack up your yoga mat and strap on your stilettos for the ride to the airport — you can take them off as soon as you land.

NEW YORK EAT
Puttin‘ on the Ritz Sophistication and style abound at a hidden haunt.
| by Wendy Lubovich The Campbell Apartment, Grand Central Terminal, 15 Vanderbilt Entrance, New York, 212-953-0409 // hospitalityholdings.com
After an hour sipping cocktails inside the clubby Campbell Apartment — a rarified world with Florentine painted ceilings, lioncrested fireplaces and plush chairs — you’ll convince yourself you are part of New York’s elite. After more than an hour, you’ll think you’re a Vanderbilt. “The idea is to bridge the gap between public space and private club,” says owner Mark Grossich. “We want to transport you in every way.” Tucked quietly inside Grand Central Terminal, the former 1920s office of tycoon John W. Campbell feels every bit like a stage set, but it’s not. It’s a carefully restored private salon that may well be one of the sexiest spots in all of New York. Cool jazz fills the room while pinstripe-suited bankers gather around the bar. They talk deals while sipping vintage cocktails or the trademark Prohibition Punch. The room is dimly lit, the people are beautiful and there is a hint of flirtation in the air — a very 2012 way to unplug. “We spend our entire day tied to technology. Here, people want to grab on to something real,” Grossich observes. Opened 12 years ago, the plush lounge is still an insider’s spot that almost went undiscovered. After Campbell’s death in the 1950s, the room was boarded up, serving as a signal man’s office, a closet for transit police, even a jail. “The windows were covered up, and the walls were whitewashed,” Grossich adds. “We had to carefully repaint the ceiling, with artisans lying on their back Sistine Chapel–style.” In recent years, the space has served as a backdrop for various photo shoots and television shows, including a now infamous scene from Gossip Girl, where a drunken night ends in an intimate encounter on top of the bar. The cocktail lounge is the perfect firstdate destination and is routinely considered one of New York’s top spots to meet powerful men. But in recent months, another kind of visitor has been the talk of the apartment. The staff has reported paranormal activity in the bar, with strange sensations of someone pushing them from behind. One worker even reported seeing an older couple appear on the balcony above. The most vivid story involves a woman seen going into the bathroom and never coming out. “We even called the fire department to unlock the door, but no one was inside,” Grossich says. Was it a ghost? Hard to say. But accounts like these surely add to Campbell Apartment’s charm. It’s just another reason this very civilized meeting place holds such allure, this roaring ’20s holdout where you can hold on to the past while imagining you are a Vanderbilt in the here and now.

NEW YORK
Delightful Digs Style and luxury take up residence near the Hudson River.
| by Wendy Lubovich Conrad New York, 102 North End Ave., New York 212-945-0100 // conradnewyork.com
In these days of diminutive boutique hotels, it is remarkable to enter the Conrad New York and simply take in its sheer size. More like a cavernous art gallery tucked into Lower Manhattan’s Battery Park City, the chicly designed space takes on an Emerald City vibe. “It really functions as a city within a city,” says General Manager Robert Rechtermann. “It is an escape in every sense of the word.” The atrium lobby is dramatically anchored by Sol LeWitt’s extraordinary painting “Loopy Droopy,” a swirling confection rising 13 stories high. Veils of twisted metal and harp-like strings float above, adding airy mystery to the room, where serpentine couches provide restful repose. “People love to sit in hotel lobbies and watch what goes by — especially in this lobby,” Rechtermann says. There are some 2,000 works of art throughout the hotel, where suites have an apartment-like feel with Japanese sliding panels providing separate work and sleep spaces. Pale woods, ambient light and tones of butter cream make for a naturalistic hideaway. The hotel restaurant, Atrio, is a handsome spot for Wall Street workers after hours, with its open kitchen and wood-stone oven. But the highest praise goes to the rooftop cocktail bar, perched 16 stories above. With the air of a playful Manhattan tree house, it serves prosecco on tap and boozy popsicles — the perfect fortification to take in views of the Statue of the Liberty and sunsets over the Hudson.

Shop Girl Monique Lhuillier unveils a flagship store on Madison Avenue.
| by Hayley Dulin
Monique Lhuillier, 19 E. 71st St., New York 212-683-3332 // moniquelhuillier.com
Monique Lhuillier, the designer known for high-end bridal, couture and ready-to-wear collections, is set to expand her empire, opening her first flagship store in New York this fall (she also has shops in Los Angeles and Edina). Lhuillier will join New York City’s iconic Madison Avenue, where the world’s luxury designers and top fashion houses stake their claim. Jim Leniart, owner and creator of Red Maps fold-out city guides, frequently has to update the shop-laden street. “Nowhere else is there this kind of concentration of stores,” Leniart tells the New York Times, noting that between 60th and 78th streets there are 82 designer-clothing boutiques, 34 high-end jewelry stores and 34 stores specializing in categories like shoes, handbags or eyewear. “I have to believe that wealth is a factor.”
Lhuillier will be in good company, with dresses selling for upward of $16,000. Her atelier also produces linens, tableware, fine paper and home fragrances. On top of that, Lhuillier will debut a 15-style footwear collection encompassing day, evening and bridal looks (set to hit stores next spring). The Madison Avenue store opened in October on 71st Street, between Fifth and Madison.

Opening Ceremony, 451 N. La Cienega Blvd., West Hollywoods 310-652-1120 // openingceremony.us International creativity is the name of the game at West Hollywood boutique Opening Ceremony. Located in Charlie Chaplin’s former dance studio, this conceptual and collaborative shop is filled with pieces from emerging and established American and international designers in the spirit of finding and celebrating true talent in fashion. Stepping into the store is designed to be an experience in itself. The shop’s winding hallways and separate rooms are inspired by the experience of driving the Los Angeles highways. Guests can exit to the room of an individual designer, decorated and presented in their own aesthetic for a personalized shopping experience. There’s no fear of an accident here, however; each designer is handpicked for unique pieces and character. Participants in this year’s Opening Ceremony include Acne, Nom de Guerre, Topshop and the store’s private-label collection, among others. Past favorites combine seamlessly with fresh talent in this whirlwind of a concept. So whether you discover your new favorite designer or pick up some classic pieces, you will not regret hopping on the creative highway that is Opening Ceremony.

Sometimes you just need someplace beachy (even if it isn’t on the beach) where you can arrive in shorts and a T-shirt but still eat well and feel like you’ve just joined the hippest party. If you’re near Santa Monica or Venice, head to Venice Beach’s Cerveteca. Amiable owner Oscar Hermosillo will be there, and during weekend brunch, his mom may be at the stove cooking up chilaquiles or huevos rancheros. Plus Dad might be drawing Old Rasputin Imperial Stout, one of 10 or so beers on tap. This open-air restaurant is small and lively; hence reservations are strongly recommended. Mix with models, actresses, artists and movie agents, and chow down on some Baja fish tacos or mama’s ceviche for lunch. For dinner, try the flank steak with chimichurri sauce, or the red snapper with olives, capers, tomatoes, onions and garlic. In the mood for an all-day, all-night fiesta? Right next door is Oscar’s first place, Venice Beach Wines, whose opening years ago turned the neighborhood into a destination. Drop in for wine, beer and ale plus cheese platters, charcuterie, and interesting sandwiches and salads. Insider tip: Try the $9 melty cheese hot pots.

Oceana Beach Club Hotel, 849 Ocean Ave., Santa Monica 310-393-0486 // hoteloceanasantamonica.com
Imagine a cross between your rich friend’s villa and a three-story motel: a courtyard with a nice pool, the curved balconies of guest rooms surrounding it. A handful of tall palm trees (in case the California blue sky doesn’t remind you of your locale). A polished dining room off to the side. All of it tucked in what, from street view, looks like a fairly conventional motel. That’s the Oceana Beach Club Hotel, a relaxed 70-room (52 of which are suites) place to call home on your next visit to the Pacific Ocean. Just across Ocean Avenue from the cliff that looks down on the Pacific Coast Highway and the sea, the Oceana isn’t trying to be the fanciest place in town. Instead, it’s a congenial place with a very cool, low-key vibe, whose simple, mostly white rooms come with Egyptian-cotton bedding and Frette towels. And while rooms in the $400-a-night range don’t count as bargain-basement accommodations, you’ll appreciate being able to walk to shops and restaurants — not to mention you’re in easy range of a stroll along Santa Monica’s famous beach.

Big Fish GT Fish & Oyster reels ’em in with serious seafood.
|
by Michael Nagrant
GT Fish & Oyster, 531 N. Wells, Chicago 312-929-3501 // gtoyster.com
People still think of Chicago as a meat-andpotatoes town, a repository for hunks of charred meat that sop up every last dime of a business-expense account. It’s true; we have plenty of steakhouses. But one stop at GT Fish & Oyster, the seafood-skewing upscale riff on a coastal fish shack, should cure any misconceptions about how far this hog butcher to the world has come. Chef Giuseppe Tentori (the GT), a veteran of the renowned Charlie Trotter’s, declared his independence at sister restaurant Boka a few years ago. But at GT Fish, he’s staking a claim alongside Trotter as one of Chicago’s premier chefs. A terrine featuring beige and white striations of shrimp and foie gras resembles an edible Mark Rothko painting. A soulful mélange of butter and brine resting on a rich square of airy brioche is rarely found outside of a Trotter-esque pre fixe. The same goes for tiny fish tacos wrapped in fresh tortillas and marinated with garlic, swooshed with fiery chipotle aioli, and studded with fried pork skin or chicharrón. Keron Herold’s design, featuring plush, gray banquettes, swordfish skeleton art, and black dining tables trimmed with gold plate, is just as artful. Best yet, most of the labor-intensive small plates are less than $15, meaning you can dip into that expense account twice and still have room to splurge on a meat-and-potatoes era Old Money cocktail, a heady mix of bourbon, Aperol, walnut liqueur, bitters, allspice dram and orange oil.

Yes, this means a trip downtown, but the personal attention from the experts at George Greene is well worth the trip. John Jones and two other Chicago menswear veterans have been skillfully pairing incredibly diverse styles and textures to create unique wardrobes since 2001. The four-room shop is eclectically filled with antique tables, cases and chests to display the exclusive assortment of clothing, shoes and accessories. It’s a lot to take in. But with energetic and experienced staff walking you through every step of the way, the shopping experience at George Greene will have you coming back for more.

Pure Gold The Waldorf Astoria ups the ante in the Windy City.
|
by Rudy Maxa
Waldorf Astoria Chicago, 11 E. Walton St., Chicago 312-646-1300 // waldorfastoria3.hilton.com The only difference between arriving at Chicago’s newest luxury hotel and a French chateau is that the doorman speaks English at the Waldorf Astoria Chicago. The courtyard is cobblestone. There’s a stolid, stone façade, an iron and glass porte-cochère above the front door, and in the evening, European-style lanterns light the way. The building in Chicago’s Gold Coast opened three years ago as the Elysian Hotel just as the hotel industry hit the skids. But it received raves for its style and publicity for its no-tipping policy. In November 2011, Chicago investor Sam Zell bought it (with Hilton as a partner), paying the highest price ever paid on a per-room basis for a Chicago hotel: $505,000 a room. But what rooms! Most of the 188 rooms are suites with cool, gray fabrics and huge bathrooms with acres of tile. Zell wisely didn’t change much more than the name on the door. The same blue, modernist oil painting hangs above the reception desk, and the no-tipping policy remains. The indoor lap pool is flooded with natural light, and while the Michelin-starred restaurant was closed, a bistro called Balsan has a most appealing menu. Sunday nights feature a fixed-price “family supper” with some appetizers, a couple main courses and sides, and dessert — which might be the best deal in town at $31 a person. Add $35 for several glasses of wines paired with your order by the hotel’s enthusiastic sommelier, Dan Pilkey.

AN ADVISOR WHO OFFERS FLEXIBLE
LENDING OPTIONS TO FIT YOUR NEEDS AND YOUR FINANCIAL STRATEGY. The PrimeFirst® 25-year adjustable-rate mortgage from Merrill Lynch Home Loans TM features rates as low as 1.500%1, 1.605% APR. A Merrill Lynch Financial Advisor can offer you lending solutions to help you gain additional liquidity to pay down principal more strategically or to use for your other financial goals. Randall Green, CIMA® Senior Vice President – Wealth Management Senior Financial Advisor (952) 404-5940 Merrill Lynch 315 Lake Street, Suite 200 Wayzata, MN 55391
1.500%, 1.605% APR with a 1% origination fee. The initial annual percentage rate (APR) may vary. The interest rate adjusts monthly based on the one-month LIBOR as published in The Wall Street Journal, plus a margin of 1.25%, and may increase. Rate and margin are current as of 3/20/12. Rate and margin are subject to application of standard underwriting criteria and may change without notice. For a $600,000 purchase of a primary residence, with a 20% down payment and a $480,000 mortgage, 120 monthly interest-only payments of $600 are followed by 180 monthly amortizing payments of $2,980, assuming interest rate remains constant throughout the adjustable term of the loan. Payments do not include amounts for taxes and insurance premiums. The actual payment obligation will be greater. When deciding whether an adjustable-rate mortgage is right for your situation, you should consider the potential risk of rising rates and payments and such factors as how long you plan to own your home. This is an interest-only mortgage that allows you to pay only the interest on the money you borrow for a certain number of years. If you pay only the amount of interest that’s due, once the interest-only period ends, you still will owe the original amount you borrowed, and your monthly payment will increase—even if interest rates stay the same—because you must pay back the principal as well as interest. You should ask what the payments on your loan will be after the end of the interest-only period. If you are considering an adjustable-rate mortgage, ask what your payments can be if interest rates increase. Visit our Web site at www.merrillhomeloans.com for more information about the risks of interest-only mortgages. Even though the pattern has all manner of sea life including sea horses and shrimp, I can see this on a bright patio on Lake Minnetonka, making the owner feel really happy inside. Get the Look: 100-percent linen Funny Fish designed by Richard Smith for the No. 9 Collection by Jim Thompson
Why I Love It: The combination of screenprinting and cut velvet makes for a very interesting fabric. Depending on how you look at it, the aquamarine “feathers” on this new pattern seem to sit on a gray or black background, with deep shadows or none at all. The effect is very deco. Get the Look: Rayon-cotton Velvet Feathers in the aquamarine colorway by David Rockwell for the Spotlight Collection by Jim Thompson
Why I Love It: Jim Thompson also comes out with some really fun retro patterns, and this season is no exception. This pattern is very cool, because it has such a fun texture, like handwoven jute or burlap. It looks really great on an upholstered bench. Oversized Damasks Why I Love It: This is a classic damask, but done in a giant scale to create drama and fresh energy. I can see this fabric in a stunning bedroom, with lots of cream-colored bedding accented with grosgrain ribbons. Retro Ogee Patterns Why I Love It: This is such a clever update of the classic ogee motif: little retro blooms embellished with embroidered knots. Get the Look: Embroidered cotton-rayon Sira fabric in orange, from the Folia Collection by Harlequin

Chevrons Why I Love It: The chevron is big right now, and for good reason. The pattern is bold and graphic, and a little prep school. I love the idea of a patio done up in this crisp, white and navy pattern from Schumacher, with generous pops of raspberry or tangerine orange. avid Heide’s interest in architecture and design dates as far back as preschool — at 5 years old, he would sit for hours drawing up house plans with a pad of graph paper and a pencil or building elaborate houses out of Legos. His mother, a teacher who was on the board of the Iowa State Education Association, would bring Heide to meetings at the famous Salisbury House in Des Moines, Iowa, where he was left to his own devices, exploring the 22,000 square feet of the opulent 1928 manor. When Heide was a college student at Macalester College studying classical languages, he loved combing the stacks of the library. “I felt this strong connection to history, this feeling of being a part of a continuum of knowledge,” he says. He also forged an interest in Twin Cities architecture. His first home was a 1927 Tudor in St. Paul’s Mac-Groveland neighborhood, which he purchased from the 97-year-old original owner, for whom it had been a wedding gift. Heide remodeled the place himself, updating the plumbing, kitchen and a bathroom, and sold it for a tidy profit a couple years later. That was his first fixer-upper. In 1997, David Heide Design Studio launched with Heide, a part-time employee and an IBM electric typewriter. Since then, DHDS, which is celebrating its 15th anniversary, has collected a portfolio of more than 300 residences, grown to a staff of 14, and cultivated a reputation for meticulously preserving and renovating older homes while imparting a sense of history to new ones. “One thing I’m proud of is that I don’t believe we have a signature look,” says Heide. “Our goal a lot of the

time, particularly with older homes, is to have a home look as if we haven’t been there at all.” Take for example a rundown 1892 Queen Anne house in the Kenwood neighborhood of Minneapolis, which DHDS transformed into a grand, single-family residence once again — with its original fireplaces, art glass and millwork, along with a richly paneled kitchen that has every modern convenience but still feels of the era. “When working on a house like this, we aim to continue to speak the language in which the house was defined to begin with — and then further it in a respectful way,” says Heide. His design team pored over photos from the Minnesota State Historical Library to match the period detailing. “I love that people can’t tell where the old and new join,” says Barbara Burgum, who tapped the firm to revive her 1905 Prairiestyle house in Deephaven. Burgum also hired DHDS to build a northern Minnesota lake cottage inspired by the Arts and Crafts aesthetic, showcasing beautiful woodwork, custom-designed stencils, and a mix of stone and timber. While the home is entirely new, it blends into the natural surroundings like it’s been there forever. DHDS’s latest project might seem like a departure for the firm: a sleek, minimalist design of interlocking cubes. It’s the first new construction in 20 years in University Grove, a neighborhood well-known for its collection of homes by Minnesota’s distinguished architects — Edwin Lundie, Elizabeth and Winston Close, Ralph Rapson. One might ask preservation-oriented Heide where this uber-modern design fits. “I felt the responsible thing to do was to build a house of today that would take its place in the continuum of architectural styles,” he explains. Not a throwback or a revival, but a David Heide design that is unmistakably 2012.

Kitchen at the Core Partners 4, Design crafts a sleek, centralized kitchen to suit a Michigan couple’s minimalist taste. | by Megan Kaplan

hen Adam and Rhian Yeoman and their dogs, Balthazar and Pickle, moved into a cabin in Dollar Bay, Mich., the views of Portage Lake were a selling point. The house itself, however, left much to be desired. The kitchen was the major sore spot, with its outdated appliances, Formica countertops and Shaker-style cabinets — the antithesis of the couple’s penchant for clutterfree, contemporary design. After living in the house for a year — and researching ideas and materials to incorporate into a rebuild — the Yeomans hired Michigan architect Karin Cooper to head up the project, bringing on Minneapolis-based Partners 4, Design to focus on the kitchen. The kitchen and bath experts had recently renovated Adam’s mother’s kitchen, and the couple loved the stunning ultra-modern result. “Since the kitchen would be a central part of our new home, we knew we wanted something that would make a statement, that would be minimal yet inviting and usable,” Adam says. The couple enjoys cooking for friends and experimenting with different cuisines, like Rhian’s healthy vegan dishes, so they needed room to entertain and plenty of work stations to be inventive. Taking advantage of the views was key to the design, as was a free-flowing layout. The couple, who have lived and traveled extensively in Europe, also had a strong preference for streamlined monolithic surfaces and knew right from the beginning they wanted Poggenpohl cabinetry; they chose a mixture of black and white high-gloss finishes to contrast with the Brazilian cherry wood floors.

TOP The Yeomans loved the view that came with their Michigan home but needed a revitalized kitchen for entertaining. BOTTOM One stimulating element Partners 4, Design added to the kitchen was an LED-lit backsplash that transitions colors at the press of a button.

“The trickiest challenge with this kitchen was its location: right at the core of the house,” says designer Leslie Meyers. “We essentially ended up with two parallel galley kitchens rather than pass-throughs, and a center island as the hub.” The first floor radiates from the kitchen, which is supported by anchor walls and is open to every room, including the dining and living rooms. There are distinct spaces for prep work, clean up, entertaining and cooking, and a standout LED-lit backsplash can change color on a whim. Black granite countertops with a waterfall edge create a smooth, sleek surface for chopping and serving food. A 60-inch Wolf range occupies one side of the center island, and a custom wood cutting board slides into position over the sink when needed. To keep the backsplash and work areas free from mess, pop-up outlets were installed in the counters and double appliance garages were built to hide the coffee machine, blender and other small appliances. A long, white Corian bar set over tuck-under beverage refrigerators is the ideal place for guests to pull up a stool while the couple puts the finishing touches on a meal. There is also a clear view out to the water. “Everyone gravitates to the kitchen,” Adam says. “And Leslie did a great job of making it both beautiful and functional for us — it was exactly what we wanted.” “Some of our best projects have been collaborations like this one,” says Meyers, who has worked with this architect on two previous projects. Andy Ostreim, general manager at Partners 4, Design, adds: “We like to say we have a ‘client for life’ program. This probably won’t be the Yeomans’ last home, and we hope that when they have a new property to renovate, they’ll come back to us.”

esigning a home can be overwhelming. But imagine needing to select every item floor to ceiling in just a few months. Then imagine downsizing from a five-bedroom house to a twobedroom condo. That’s the real-life challenge empty nesters Brad and Diane England faced a couple years ago. “We were moving so fast,” Diane recalls. “In fact, we had to live in the model until our unit was finished.” As the months flew by, the Englands began to lose focus — especially when the couple faced several major decisions a day. Fortunately they tapped Minneapolis-based design firm LiLu Interiors. Owner Lisa Peck and Assistant Designer Christina Winter put their minds at ease. “Lisa had a clear vision from the start,” Diane says. “Whenever I wavered, she would reassure me and keep me on track.” The Englands’ Edina condo was a blank canvas. The main walls couldn’t be moved, but that didn’t stop LiLu and architect Scott Newland from re-imagining the space to better suit an on-the-go lifestyle. “We bought this condo as a shell, knowing that we could design it from scratch,” Diane says. “I had worked with Lisa before, and I was looking forward to working with her again.” Even though the condo was new construction, it would be filled with various antiques, vintage finds and artwork accumulated over the years by these world travelers. LiLu served as curator, accentuating the extensive collections with a

Lakeside Luxury A seamless 4,000-square-foot addition transforms a modest lake residence into a stunning dream home. | by Carolyn Crooke
A
fabulous shoreline and a neighborhood complete with friends and relatives drew the owners of this home — a young, active couple — to purchase this Lake Minnetonka property. The only problem? Space. The original home was just a fraction of the size it is today. Then fire destroyed the home next door, and the adjoining lot became available. It was at that point that the duo realized they could create the home of their dreams. To bring it all to life, they tapped John Kraemer & Sons, longtime custom builder and remodeler of luxury homes and fine residences. The firm went to work with Rick Storlien of RDS Architects on plans for the 4,000-square-foot addition — one that wouldn’t look like an addition at all. Rather, the vision was to creatively build on the small home’s mood and materials, transforming it into a majestic residence fit for entertaining and luxury lakeside living.

One of the most stunning aspects of the space is the woodwork, all alder wood along traditional lines, adding a classic heft to the spaces. John Kraemer & Sons employed its own highly accomplished woodworking experts instead of farming out the work. “It’s a way of ensuring our clients get the A-level woodworking team every time,” explains John Kraemer, Director of Sales & Marketing of John Kraemer & Sons. The wood adds immense warmth, balancing out the large swaths of glass that create a vibrant connection between the posh interior and the stunning lake views. Outside, there’s a hot tub and a basketball court — also part of the addition. Interior designer Brandi Hagen of Eminent Interior Design worked with the homeowners to choose finishings and furnishings. One of the most exciting choices here: an extensive use of Cambria, a rich, versatile quartz product. Cambria is most often seen on countertops; here, it’s used on floors, walls and vanities to striking effect. The checkerboard floor in the entryway foyer is fashioned from alternating pale tiles of Cambria, creating a breathtaking first impression at the foot of the spiral staircase. The dark, handsome walls and custom tile floors of the large showers

in the master bath, as well as the floors of the lower-level living room, are also gleaming expanses of Cambria. The addition also includes a movie theater, an office, a living room, bathrooms and a bar area. In the original portion of the home, the John Kraemer & Sons team transformed the former master bath into a guest room. “This is more of a traditional style,” explains Kraemer, “but there are very few formal spaces. It’s the perfect home for a young couple that loves to have friends over, loves to enjoy the lake, loves to entertain. There’s even a pool table in the living room. This is a home for people who live life to the fullest.”

Personal Space Interior designer Katie Bassett creates a pitch-perfect place after spending a mere three hours getting to know its owner. | By Ivy Gracie
“
I don’t want to be involved. I want the reveal. I want to walk in and have this be a surprise.” Not your typical design directive, but according to Katie Bassett, owner and principal designer of KBI Design Studios in Edina, there was nothing typical about the remodel she did in a recently purchased condo at the Carlyle in downtown Minneapolis. “[The client] had gone through a divorce, she was an empty nester, she wanted out of the ’burbs and she wanted to change her life,” Bassett recalls. “And she wasn’t bringing anything from her Edina house except her clothing, a few family items and a couple pieces of art. We were starting from scratch.” On top of that, the client was in a hurry. During the first of just two brief meetings, she informed Bassett she would be leaving for a month of business travel and asked her to accelerate the project. “I had five days to get a design concept and budget together — complete with linens, kitchenware and all the rest — for a place I saw one time, for a person I met one time.” Bassett had fleshed out the design directive at the first meeting: modern, color and a pink bedroom. No structural changes were called for in the 1,500-square-foot unit, so she concentrated on finding just the right colors, textures, furnishings and finishes. Her concept was well-received, and when the two met the second and final time, Bassett learned everything she could about her client before she left town. “I was trying to listen as hard as I could to everything she was saying, because I knew I wasn’t going to get many opportunities to talk to her after that. I wanted to understand her as much as I could.” During that meeting, Bassett gleaned insights about the woman herself, such as the reason for a seemingly childish color choice for the bedroom: “As a child, she wanted a pink bedroom but never had one. So now, at this point in her life, she’s going to have it.” Well-stocked with stories and anecdotes about her client, Bassett incorporated uniquely personal touches throughout the home. A cherished album cover became a focal point in the powder room: “She had an album cover of Blondie. She said, ‘I’ve been carrying this around since college. I just can’t get rid of it.’” Work and play came together in the office. “She has a piece of property at the base of

Mt. Hood and plans to retire there, so I blew up a photo of Mt. Hood to cover an entire wall,” says Bassett. “That way, when she was sitting at her desk she’d be looking at the place where she would retire.” And a cherished antique silver set once owned by the client’s grandmother found a place of prominence in the dining room. Bassett introduced color into the living and dining areas with fabrics and artwork. To keep the space clean, she kept the walls white, neutral

and minimally adorned. In the kitchen, she played with yellow (“We got her a yellow coffeemaker, yellow toaster, yellow pot for the stove, and we put some lemons out on the counter”). And in the private spaces, Bassett drenched the walls with deep, soothing hues: blue in the second bedroom, which was transformed into a retreat for watching television and reading, and varying shades of pink and violet in the master bedroom, where a child’s long-lost dream became an adult’s reality. Throughout the project, Bassett and her client communicated via email, but they never spoke about the design itself. “She would say, ‘Make your executive decisions. Do what you’ve got to do,’” Bassett says. “But she would always ask when it would be done. She wanted to start her new life, and she was in a hurry.” When the project was completed less than three months later, the reveal was staged as a cocktail party for the client and eight of her friends. “My client was throwing a cocktail party the day she moved in,” Bassett laughs. “When she arrived, the oven was full of appetizers, there was champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries, and there was music playing.” Not a single detail had been spared. “We had cotton balls and Q-tips, toothpaste and toothbrushes. I bought her an Aveda basket. We washed all her sheets and towels. And I knew she was going to sleep there that night, so I had coffee, bagels and fruit for the morning. When I handed her the keys, it really hit home. She started jumping up and down. It was the greatest to see how excited she was.” Bassett says one of the most moving moments came when her client recognized Mt. Hood on the office wall. “She broke into tears, because

And while she admits that this project was unique, Bassett says that no matter the assignment, her goal is always the same: “My whole job is to give people what they need and want. What Really Matters Design mogul Nate Berkus talks about his new line at Target, his new book and how he styles his home. | AS TOLD TO Ivy Gracie
A
merica fell in love with Nate Berkus when he made his first appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2002. An affable guy with no semblance of pretense, he infused the world of interior design with a sense of humor and a sense of hope, making it more accessible to the masses. Since then, he’s added author, radio host, television host and homefurnishings designer to his resumé and firmly established himself as a go-to guru for all things design and lifestyle. This fall finds Berkus launching an exclusive line of home furnishings at Target and releasing his second book, The Things That Matter. And while both ventures mark the next stage of the Berkus brand’s evolution, the underlying message remains the same: reframe the rules, picture the possibilities and reclaim the right to love the way you live. Artful Living: You’ve got a new product launch at Target and a new book. How are you holding up? Nate Berkus: I’m doing fine; thank you for asking. For me, everything is always a question of quality, so whether I’m working on a makeover on TV or a project for clients, or looking at samples from factories, or editing each page of the new book, I bring the same amount of attention to all of it. So it’s a balancing act. AL: How do you balance so many significant projects at the same time? NB: For one, I surround myself with really smart and talented people. And two, the message of everything is all the same: that your home should tell the story of who you are. It applies to everything I do. AL: What if you don’t think you have a story? NB: Everyone has a story. AL: So where do we find our story? NB: Your ethnicity, where your family comes from. A vacation that you took that reminds you of a beautiful time in your life, a vacation that you aspire to take, a place where you felt happiest. The way your grandmother used to dress, or the way you dressed your children when they were little. All of those things can be recreated in your family room or in your living room. AL: You are a big name. You could have developed a line with any company in the world. Why Target? NB: I chose to work with Target because they’re very fast-moving, they’re very energetic, and they’re very interested in what’s new, what’s next and what hasn’t been done before. Their whole philosophy is very
162 Artful Living
| Autumn 2012
similar to my own; it’s about providing opportunities for people to create something that they’re proud of and makes them feel good, whether it’s a new lipstick or a new outfit, or being right on the cusp of every trend. And I like to see tangible things quickly, so I wanted to work with a company that’s fast-paced and forward-thinking. AL: Is there a look that defines your line? NB: I’ve never had a signature look, but there are some common threads between everything I do. I’ve always believed that the things that I design should give people the freedom to create their own signature look. So, whereas a lot of people in design feel very strongly that a space should only feel a certain way or be inspired by a certain feeling, this collection actually touches on lots of different periods, different feelings and different ideas. The point is for people to bring some things home and combine them with the things they already have, and really express their personalities within their spaces. AL: Are there any colors, fabrics or materials that figure predominantly in the line? NB: Definitely lots of natural materials — lots of washed oak, snakeskin, cotton and linen — and details like metal studs. And I’m using a lot of lacquer in very deep colors like hunter green, dark yellow and bright white. AL: What were your influences for the line? NB: I collect vintage furniture and decorative arts, and one of the periods I’m really interested in is the French 1940s and 1950s. A lot of the materials — the snakeskin, metal studs, washed oaks and heavy linens — were used a lot in Paris in the ’40s and ’50s. But there are more than 150 different products in the launch collection, so the inspiration came from everywhere. AL: Were there any Minnesota influences? NB: Growing up in Minnesota, my mom had a tortoise shell that she brought back from a trip to Mexico and had preserved. It always hung over our family-room fireplace, and I’m on record that I want it someday. It’s such a great, iconic form. We see so many animal influences in design, and I thought, why don’t we recreate that tortoise shell to give people solutions for what to hang over their fireplace or for what to hang over a sofa or over each nightstand? So the first attempt was to recreate the tortoise shell that sits in my mother’s house in Minnetonka, but it didn’t work because it looked fake and I didn’t like the idea that it was faux. But then I thought, why
don’t I embrace the fact that it’s not a real tortoise shell and do it in high lacquer colors that match some of the other accessories in the line? So we did it in bright white, dark forest green and yellow lacquers, and they’re amazing. AL: One design tip we all know is to mix timeless pieces with what’s on trend. Where does your line fit with that philosophy? NB: This line gives people the opportunity to be very current. Nothing is over $129, because I want people to be able to embrace the trends and new ideas that they’re seeing but do it in a way that doesn’t feel like an enormous commitment.

I think that’s what we all want to do. It’s the same philosophy as buying a big, chunky costume-jewelry necklace to wear with a white cotton shirt you’ve had forever. So you should keep searching for the perfect chest of drawers or the beautiful antique mirror, and then flank that mirror with a pair of lacquered tortoise shells. Hopefully, I’m giving you an opportunity to create something new and fresh that really sings when you look around your own space. AL: Tell us about your new book, The Things That Matter. NB: When I think about it, there really are two types of books on design. There are the beautifully photographed coffee-table books of one person’s work, which I could have done and maybe will do eventually. And then there are the how-to books (similar to Home Rules: Transform the Place You Live Into a Place You’ll Love, which I wrote in 2005) that have design ideas that everyone can follow as they’re trying to create their own space. The Things That Matter is a new way of looking at design. It’s meant to inspire people to really get creative, to make their own decisions and re-establish a connection to the things that they allow through their doorway and the choices they make about what they’re going to live with, touch, feel and see every day. I wanted to share with everyone that it’s not about keeping up with what everybody else is doing and it’s not about following every single rule that we’ve heard in design. AL: How does the book inspire readers? NB: The book profiles several interiors, all vastly different from one another. And the people and the interiors in the book are rule breakers, and I think that’s one of the best places to start. The common thread between all of the interiors is that the personality behind each room is pure, which is really at the heart of what good design and living well are all about — to have a space that not only rises up to greet us every time we walk through the door but that is individual enough to be able to walk someone through the story of your life by the choices you make for your home. That’s the philosophy behind the book. AL: So, what are the things that matter? NB: For me, the things that matter are the things that we have a connection to. They remind us of a person or a place or a time that made us happy, that brought us together in some way. When I look around the rooms in my home, I can tell you exactly where I bought each thing, what I was doing and who I was with. I think it’s possible to tell our story through our things. AL: You’ve always made interior design look accessible, even somewhat easy. Is there a trick to that? NB: The trick is it’s not easy, but it is accessible. It takes practice, just like anything else. You’re not going to walk into a gym and have perfect form lifting weights or keep up with the rest of the spinning class the first time. Design is a bit of a mental exercise. You have to keep trying at getting a room to feel correct and look good; it’s a constantly evolving process. AL: So what’s the one design tip that everyone overlooks but shouldn’t? NB: Oftentimes we get an inspirational image stuck in our head, and we work really hard to try and achieve something that looks like it. We start decorating kind of mindlessly, buying things we think fit that image. Don’t get tied too closely to one idea. I think the most important
164 Artful Living
| Autumn 2012

factor in any interior is experimentation. You may come across something that you really love at a flea market or an estate sale, and if you love something, you’ll figure out a way to make it work in your home. Explore and experiment. Bring things home, keep the receipts, keep the tags on them and see what you can create on your own. There’s a lot of fun in that, and when you get it right, you know it. AL: In Minnesota, we have a tendency to “beige up” our homes. Any tips for bringing in color? NB: I think the easiest thing to do when you’re trying to incorporate color is to take a look at what you wear. If you have a favorite dress, blouse or sweater that’s a certain color, chances are that’s a really good place to start. And if you haven’t worked with color before, start with deeper, saturated tones as opposed to bold primaries. It’s a little bit softer on the eye to add a dark green, a black or a deep yellow — even a soft pink or gray. It’s easier to start embracing color by working with colors that aren’t quite as bold. AL: You once said, “I wasn’t going on Oprah to pick sofa colors and paint chips; I was there to lift people up through the way they live.” Tell us about that. NB: If you really stop and think about it, our environments really affect the way we feel. They affect our self-esteem; they affect the way we view ourselves. When you leave your home in the morning, if it’s in complete disarray, you act differently. But when you walk through your door and the dishes are done, there’s a new pair of pillows on the sofa, and you’ve taken the time to choose a paint color and paint the walls, you feel a sense of accomplishment and a sense of belonging. It happens to me every single time I come home. Home, for me, is defined as an explanation of how I really want to live every single day. AL: So where is home for you now? NB: Home is New York City. I’m back and forth to Chicago; my design firm is based there and the operations of my companies are based there. AL: And how often do you get to the Twin Cities? NB: I’m back and forth there as well. It’s very funny — I come in as a grownup with big Target meetings about marketing and samples and editing the line, and I stay in my childhood bedroom and borrow a car from my parents. I feel like I’m 17 again. But the benefit is I get to stop at Dairy Queen on the way home from the meeting. AL: You have accomplished so much and touched so many lives. What do you still need to do? NB: I’m sure there are lots of things. There’s lots of travel. I haven’t spent a lot of time in South America, and I’m fascinated by that. There are a lot of museums I’d like to see, books I have left to read and people to meet. Career-wise, I’m always interested in doing and learning different things. That’s why I was one of the executive producers of the film The Help this year. I’m definitely interested in producing more films that are based on stories that I believe in. I’m very grateful to have had the opportunities that I’ve had, and I’m very grateful as I think about what’s happening this fall — to have the new Target collection and the book coming out. But really, my life is all about the relationships I have with my family and friends and co-workers. I’ve learned from Oprah to come from a place of abundance as opposed to a place of always wanting more. And I’m happy with where I am right now.
You. refined.

Queen of the Clutch Designer Clare Vivier shares what’s in her bag. | As told to Hayley Dulin Artful Living: What was your inspiration for starting your line? Clare Vivier: I started the business out of my house by myself in 2006 with a laptop bag. At the time, I was working in French television and traveling often with my laptop — that’s when I noticed a hole in the market. AL: Tell us about your design process. Has it changed since your recent expansion of the brand? CV: One question I always keep in mind is: Would I wear it? If the answer is no, then I don’t make it. I think the brand speaks to many different women because of its chic simplicity with a touch of playfulness. Women of all ages, from young ladies in high school to young mothers and successful working women, all wear Clare Vivier, so I always endeavor to create chic, easy staples that will serve a woman at any stage in her life. AL: What colors are you drawn to right now? CV: Because we produce in California and sell through our own site as well as our own store, we are able to constantly bring in new items as something catches our desire. During the summer, I was drawn to pops of neon pink, orange and green, which feel cheerful and seasonally appropriate. Moving into fall, you’ll see more animal prints, including jaguar, leopard and snake, in the collection. AL: How does your personal style influence your brand? CV: As a young mother in Los Angeles married to a French man, my inspiration comes from the city we reside in and France, where we spend a significant amount of time every year. My collection reflects both of these cities, melding the simplicity of Los Angeles design and the tastefulness of France in a modern way. AL: Where do you shop for inspiration? CV: Flea markets in Los Angeles — the Rose Bowl, the Santa Monica Airport and Pasadena City College — I love them all. I also get some invaluable things from my friend Joanna Williams and her vintage textile company, Kneeland Co.

1 3 AL: And finally, what can we expect from you next? CV: I would like to broaden
my line into other accessories categories as it makes sense. Men’s accessories are already in the works, with a collaboration with Steven Alan in the fall.
AL: What are your five must-haves in your bag? CV: 1. In my bag, there is always a CV bag inside a CV bag inside a CV bag — sort of like a set of Russian matryoshka dolls.

Sensational Stems Top treatments for achieving luscious legs |
by DOUG GERVAIS, MD, FAC
I
n the 1920s, a hemline theory originated: Shorter skirts point toward economic booms, and longer ones indicate slumps. Fall highlights asymmetrical hemlines, so it’s time to get your legs looking their best. Sun damage, hormones and a sedentary lifestyle can quickly age legs. Most women know that massage, avoiding excess salt and staying hydrated as well as building muscle and burning fat will improve the look of their legs. So will the following cosmetic treatments:
Sclerotherapy: It’s estimated that at least half of all women are bothered by spider veins. Those small clusters of red, blue or purple veins that appear on thighs, calves and ankles are easily treated with sclerotherapy. In this treatment, sclerosing solution is injected into each affected vein, causing it to collapse and fade from view. Multiple treatments may be needed.
Laser Hair Removal: Many women choose laser treatments to remove excess hair permanently. The light from the laser penetrates the hair shaft and destroys the hair at its root, effectively reducing or stopping growth in that area. New technology has made this procedure even safer and more effective for people with more varied skin tones and hair colors.

Spray Tan: It takes 10 minutes to camouflage leg imperfections and make you look and feel thinner — without exposure to the sun’s damaging UV rays.
Endermologie: This is the first FDA-approved treatment for reducing the appearance of cellulite. It combines gentle suction with a rolling technique to break up and smooth out dimpled skin. EXILIS: The newest innovation in skin care, this non-invasive system delivers thermal energy in a controlled manner to your skin, stimulating new collagen formation and improving body contouring to the face, arms, décolletage, abdomen, love handles, thighs and knees.
Liposuction: If saddlebag thighs and bulges plague you, the best treatment option may be surgery. Liposuction slims and reshapes legs by removing excess fat deposits and improving body contours. It can be used to treat stubborn fat pockets resistant to diet and exercise in the buttocks, thighs, calves and ankles. Ensure your treatment provider is properly licensed and that your surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

Glamorous Giving Macy’s throws its fabulous annual event, this time with a British twist. | By Maggie Happe
T
housands of glittery, shining confetti rained down in a soft whirlwind at the close of Macy’s Glamorama, sprinkling the ground and the shoulders of audience members at the Orpheum Theatre on August 3. This memorable finale, although spectacular, was by no means the most impressive part of the breathtaking fashion show and fundraiser benefiting Children’s Cancer Research Fund. Themed “British Invasion,” the show featured nine signature designers showcasing their fall lines to the sounds of Beatles and Rolling Stones remixes. With the event’s swiftly changing sets and fast-paced music, the audience was treated to a truly beautiful display of trendsetting fashion. Standouts included the whimsical and enormous Marc Jacobs fur hat wear, the ever-classic preppy Tommy Hilfiger leather boots and mustard sweaters, polished and professional Donna Karan A-line dresses, and Diesel’s line of British-inspired men’s undergarments that left little to the imagination. Musical interludes featured YouTube sensation sisters Megan & Liz, husband-and-wife hip-hop duo Karmin, and soul crooner Robin Thicke. The performance that stole the show, however, was the story of cancer survivor and charity ambassador Laura Goering, who opened the show with a moving presentation of her story and battle with osteosarcoma at age 17. “No one fights cancer alone,” the University of Minnesota freshman reminded the jam-packed theater. Tea, crumpets, Guinness and eclectic London culinary options followed at the after party on the upper level of Macy’s, where the British Invasion was in full swing. Dressed in their finest attire from across the pond, partygoers nibbled on desserts from the Queen’s High Tea and refreshed with Lagunitas beers and Patron specialty cocktails. Ultimately raising more than $300,000 for Children’s Cancer Research Fund, Glamorama set the stage for compassion to be in fashion in Minneapolis this year. Combining awe-inspiring fashion and support for groundbreaking cancer research? There is simply nothing more glamorous.

A Stable Direction A Minnetonka firm provides balance for family finances and business success. | by Micki Sievwright
Y
ou’ve got an accountant, the office bookkeeper, possibly a small-business consultant and likely a source to monitor your finances. What if the journey for success could start and continue harmoniously with one firm? That’s Linda Gasch’s bread and butter. “I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit,” says Gasch, president and CEO of Minnetonka’s Accounting Resource Group since 1985. “Being one of 11 children, I learned to work as part of a team, but we also had a competitive drive instilled in us by our parents.” The boutique firm offers a variety of services to individuals and businesses, including accounting, payroll, business consultation, tax preparation, personal financial tracking and family budget management. Gasch’s team works diligently to form relationships internally and externally — a philosophy that clients can appreciate. “We’re real meet-you-at-eye-level, like-minded individuals,” she says. “We work as a team, honoring and respecting each other and supporting each other at all times. How we work with each other is how we work with our clients.” Flexibility and variety make Gasch’s work more enjoyable, she says, as does assisting clients across a range of industries. What ARG has is what any business craves: a 95-percent referral rate from existing clients plus strategic alliances with financial planners, investment-management professionals, lawyers and bankers. Word of mouth has allowed ARG to launch its Financial Care Concierge service. The goal? To help clients understand the totality of their net worth and the impact their spending decisions have on it. “We pay clients’ bills, monitor where their resources are going, and discuss how that impacts their goals and wishes for the future,” says Gasch, who notes that a-ha moment is like striking gold.

An Exceptional Evolution The Galleria ups the ante on service, style and selection. | By Ivy Gracie
T
hink of the Galleria and what comes to mind? Effortless elegance. The peaceful coexistence of timeless and cutting-edge style. High-quality fashion and furnishings. The good stuff. It’s been that way for 40 years, and today it’s no different. But recently some of the names have changed. Some of the major players have relocated within the center. And according to Jill Noack, vice president and general manager of Galleria Shopping Center, the shopping mecca’s property-management firm, the result is an even better mix of options at the Twin Cities’ most prestigious retail destination.
What’s New Shoe lovers will welcome Marmi, a St. Louis–based shop offering European-influenced styles. The newcomer offers alternate price points from locally owned, trendsetting Pumpz & Company down the hall, and according to Noack, “It’s another great offering and a complement to the footwear business here.”

Lili Salon and Spa has repurposed the former Smith & Hawken space as a full-service spa and hair salon. Fronted by a dazzling retail space, the facility offers a diverse menu of treatments and an outdoor area where guests can receive services or simply lounge in the sun post-pedi. Allure, a locally owned and highly touted intimate apparel, foundation wear and sleepwear boutique, is another welcome arrival. “As much as it can be self-service, Allure is really driven by appointments where they really do a true fitting,” Noack says. “You’re going to get pieces that really fit and last forever.” A few doors down, Polarn O. Pyret, a children’s apparel store based in Sweden, has opened its fourth U.S. store. “The look is very Scandinavian,” Noack explains. “It’s what Gymboree was back in the day, times 10: matchy, genderneutral and high-quality cotton at a price point that’s very accessible.”
Arhaus, a high-end furniture retailer offering environmentally conscious, handcrafted products from around the world, has taken the anchor position at the east end of the Galleria. “Their product is somewhere between 202 Artful Living

Gabberts, Pottery Barn, and Crate & Barrel,” says Noack. And thanks to an aggressive face-lift that added a head-tilting, mouth gape–inducing skylight, windows on three sides and an oversized stone fireplace, the 13,000-squarefoot space provides a warm welcome that had been lacking on that side of the building. “With what Pittsburgh Blue has done to the façade and what Arhaus is doing, it’s like there’s no back or front side to the center,” Noack says. “It’s a grand entrance.”
What’s New Again Some Galleria favorites have gotten new looks, thanks to remodels or relocations. Anchoring the west end of the center for 17 years, Pottery Barn’s recent face-lift brings new exuberance and interest into its 18,000 square feet and will serve as the prototype for the next incarnation of the brand. Cole Haan has gone west, taking over the former Que Sera location. “They really work well with dugo, Chico’s, Lucy and the other tenants there,” Noack says. “It’s a nice mix.” A remodel, scheduled to debut fall 2013, will unveil the new prototype for Cole Haan stores nationwide.
Papyrus moved next door to its former location, where the additional space allows the shop to broaden its selection of greeting cards, stationery, gifts and custom printing. Both California Closets and Bang & Olufsen have taken new digs in the lower level and former Rocco Altobelli space. And Hammer-Made has let out its seams, expanding to offer even more limitedrun shirts in premium fabrics plus custom grooms wear.

changing tables and a nice environment,” she adds.
But perhaps the center’s best-kept secret is style specialist Rhonda
Ruhland. A trend guru focusing on fashion and home, Ruhland plies her craft by merchandising windows, training staff, producing fashion events, and keeping the Galleria’s website ahead of the trends with regular updates and recommendations. “She is the eyes and the ears of the center all the time,” notes Noack. She’s also available as a personal shopper for the time-starved.
The Bottom Line Simultaneously sophisticated and charming, Galleria is the Minnesotan expression of refinement. “We are a street environment that happens to be climate-controlled,” Noack asserts. “Everybody loves to shop the street because there are some great little stores in Minneapolis. You have that feeling strolling through the Galleria. Forty percent of our stores are local — one-of-a-kind local — and you can shop here all year in a really comfortable environment. That’s truly what sets us apart.”
Insider’s Tips Who better than Noack to share a few things the general public might not know about the Galleria? “We have a tailor on-site, 24/7,” she says. “She’s here as a service for all the merchants, so by default, every store has a tailor.” “And we’ve got phenomenal family restrooms with rocking chairs,

t likely comes as no surprise that Minnesotans top many national lists for civic engagement and charitable giving. One way to give is through a community foundation, which provides the tools and counsel to make smart decisions about charitable gifts and community engagement. “Generous Minnesotans turn to partners like Minnesota Community Foundation because of our community expertise,” says Jeremy Wells, vice president of philanthropic services at the foundation, which works with individuals and families to transform generosity into action. “We help Minnesota philanthropists make an immediate impact by providing them with tools that maximize their giving and connecting them with nonprofits doing great work in the communities important to them.” Case in point: Earlier this year, the Minnesota Community Foundation designed a unique grant-making project to award $500,000 to fund long-term, sustainable organizational change for a Hennepin County nonprofit. Working with the grant’s funders, the Tom Grossman family, the foundation set up the grant criteria as well as the application and selection processes. Of the more than 100 applicants, the grant was awarded to AchieveMpls, a nonprofit partner of Minneapolis Public Schools dedicated to preparing youth for college. Many philanthropists find donor-advised funds an ideal way to manage their giving as well, says Wells. This type of fund offers many of the advantages of private foundations but with greater tax benefits, fewer restrictions and minimal administrative headaches. The Minnesota Community Foundation administers donor-advised funds, which allow individuals, families and corporations to efficiently support their favorite nonprofits while benefiting from the community and investment expertise of the foundation. Smart philanthropists also incorporate charitable giving into their estate planning to build an enduring philanthropic legacy. In addition to bequests, life-income gifts can be used to provide for the financial needs of loved ones while still achieving philanthropic goals. “Minnesotans already have a reputation as among the most civically engaged and most generous in the nation,” says Wells. “Building upon this great tradition, we help Minnesotans turn their generosity into real-world impact.”
