niversity of St. Thomas Applied Business Research recently conducted a comprehensive readership study, and the results declared Artful Living unquestionably the most preferred regional magazine. We are honored by what we have learned as we compete for your attention with a number of other high-quality publications that we respect. When readers were asked to compare Artful Living to other magazines, the focus groups and survey results reported we are most like Architectural Digest and Vanity Fair. Readers used terms like “timeless,” “aesthetically pleasing” and “magazine of choice” to describe Artful Living. On occasion, I still hear that “print is dead.” This is surely true for some types of published content; however, University of St. Thomas research revealed that specific niche magazines are thriving and have a bright future. The study also showed us how we can improve, so expect even more from Artful Living as we tailor our content to your preferences in upcoming issues. Welcome to the fashion issue of Artful Living. Our editors are just back from Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City and have brought you the latest looks from some of the best designer collections. These expressions ultimately trickle down from the runway to the street styles of tomorrow. In this issue, we are launching our first annual A-List Awards. Special thanks to our contributor Chris Plantan for scouring the upper Midwest to discover the finest in food, drink, home, accessories, experiences and places. Visit our website for details about purchasing these remarkable items. As we near the end of the year, I am thankful for the team that brings you Artful Living along with our advertisers, who underwrite your experience. But mostly, I am grateful to you, our reader, for making us No. 1. Cheers,

Making A Difference Physician changes lives inside and outside the clinic. CONGRATULATIONS to Dr. Charles Crutchfield, III, on his selection as a ‘Top Doctor’ every year since 2000! Dr. Crutchfield has also been recognized by “Minnesota Physician” as one of the 100 most influential health care leaders in Minnesota. “I want all my patients to look good and feel great with beautiful skin,” says Charles E. Crutchfield III, M.D. “When you come to Crutchfield Dermatology, the emphasis is on quality, in-depth skincare knowledge and service. That’s what really sets us apart.” A long list of awards and honors is evidence that Dr. Crutchfield is good at what he does. Recently selected by NBC News/The Grio as one of the 100 most influential African-Americans in the U.S., he is humbled by the recognition he receives and shares the credit. “I realize that no one gets where they are without the help of many people. I’m now at a point in my career where I can give back.” Dr. Crutchfield’s professional accomplishments are matched by generous community outreach and support. His commitment to the community runs deep, especially for students – through scholarships, textbook donations, and mentorship. A Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the University of Minnesota Medical School, he is a mentor in the University of Minnesota’s Future Doctors of America program, where undergraduate students of color shadow Dr. Crutchfield during patient appointments. They learn the art of medicine and are introduced to a wide variety of opportunities. Dr. Crutchfield recently received the Minnesota Medical Association Foundation’s Minority Affairs Meritorious Service Award as an outstanding mentor dedicated to students within the program. His medical students at the University of Minnesota Medical School have honored him three times as Teacher of the Year, and Dr. Crutchfield’s preceptorships through Harlem’s Touro College of Medicine so impressed two medical student recipients that they relocated to the Twin Cities to practice. Dr. Crutchfield’s definition of community enthusiastically includes the Minnesota Twins, and his love of baseball occasionally surfaces in his philanthropic work. During his residency, he learned a hospice patient and fellow baseball fan dreamed of meeting Kirby Puckett. He arranged the meeting, and the Mayo Clinic acknowledged his kindness with the Karis Humanitarian Award. When Twins player Bert Blyleven accepted a dare to eat night crawlers in exchange for a hundred dollar donation to Parkinson’s research, Dr. Crutchfield upped the ante to a thousand dollars, challenging other medical clinics to join him. His challenge raised almost $15,000 for the Parkinson’s Association of Minnesota. Dr. Crutchfield also donates to the Twins Community Fund to build ballparks for children in the inner city. “Sports give children focus and a sense of personal achievement,” he explains. “Many sports require a substantial investment, but baseball is financially accessible. You give a kid a glove, a ball,
and a bat, and they are good to go.” Remembering school days when he struggled with dyslexia himself, Crutchfield serves as a Hero Benefactor for the Reading Center, stepping in when available scholarships aren’t sufficient to cover the number of hopeful students. For the High school for Recording Arts, founded in Saint Paul to encourage at-risk youth to finish high school by linking lyric writing to English and marketing to mathematics, Dr. Crutchfield contributes funding and scholarships. Dr. Crutchfield provides substantial support, including financial contributions, and he encourages his staff to participate in breast cancer, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s walks. He has also been given the “Patriotic Employer Award” from the Minnesota National Guard for his support of our troops and the “Gold Triangle Award” from the American Academy of Dermatology for promoting health-care awareness in underserved areas. He offered free skin and scar treatments for the survivors of the tragic Minneapolis 35W bridge collapse and received the first “Physician Health Care Hero” by Medica, Twin Cities Business and KARE11 for “Outstanding contributors to the quality of health care in Minnesota.” His philanthropy also extends to supporting Camp Discovery for children with skin diseases. For over a decade, Dr. Crutchfield has been an active supporter and nominator, dedicating all royalties from the dermatology textbook he coauthored to the program. Once a child is accepted into the camp, the entire experience is covered by donations. “As a child, I loved going to camp. But as a dermatologist working with children with skin diseases, I see so many kids ashamed to go because they are afraid to expose themselves to being teased. Camp Discovery is a place where kids can be kids again.” Dr. Crutchfield’s effort extends to establishing a lectureship at the University of Minnesota honoring his parents, Susan Crutchfield M.D., then the youngest ever and first African-American female graduate of the medical school, and Charles Crutchfield, Sr., M.D., the first practicing African- American Obstetrician-Gynecologist in the Twin Cities who went on to deliver almost 10,000 babies. He has also co-authored a children’s book for “little leaguers” extolling the virtues of being sun-safe and using sun Protection. Little Charles Hits a Home Run is available on Amazon.com, Kindle, Nook and iPad. Proceeds benefit the Twins Community Fund and Camp Discovery. His contributions continue. His latest medical endeavor is an initiative requiring auto manufacturers, cell phone companies, and insurance companies to equip cars with technology disabling a phone’s texting function while driving. Visit crutchfielddermatology.com/safetexting for more information. For Dr. Crutchfield, giving back has become a way of life.

Bite Into Bliss The secret to a perfect burger. | BY TIM ALEVIZOS
A
merica’s love of hamburgers is eternal. But if anything has ever come close to killing our nation’s favorite food, “it was the 1970s,” says Twin Cities super chef Tim McKee, “when lean ground beef became a fixture at supermarket meat counters.” Fat is flavor. Fat is juiciness. Fat chance of getting a good burger without it, contends Parasole’s head of culinary development. And McKee would know, having crafted the award-winning rendition at Burger Jones. “Fat content is just one part of the equation, but it’s essential,” explains the James Beard Award winner. “The perfect ratio of meat to fat is 70:30. Beyond that, you have to use good beef. Chefs favor various blends, but you can’t go wrong with 100-percent chuck.”
McKee's Top Tips for Achieving Burger Perfection USE FRESH, COARSELY GROUND BEEF. “And handle it minimally. The more your patty gets worked, the tougher and drier it becomes. We press once with a spatula, turn just once and that’s it.” KEEP IT FLAT. “Use a flattop grill or an iron skillet and make sure it’s hot. That’s how you get the perfect sear.”
SEASON LIBERALLY. “Salt makes a good burger better.” REMEMBER THE BUN. “It should be soft and white with some integrity so that it won’t fall apart. And this is crucial: Toast it with butter to give the surface a nice crust and to prevent it from absorbing all the juices.”

Dressed to Impress Post-recession spending reinvigorates the luxury menswear industry. | BY MARGUERITE HAPPE
T
he oath of beloved St. Paul shop Heimie’s Haberdashery begins with this: “On my honor, I will dress my best, be clean in my speech and actions, live my life honestly, and take care of my body for good build and fit.” Following the trend set by world luxury icons Prada, Ermenegildo Zegna and, most notably, LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton, Midwestern men are becoming more inclined to dress to impress — and, of course, trust their haberdasher. In early 2014, the Wall Street Journal reported that LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton Chairman and CEO Bernard Arnault was spending $137 million in an attempt to reinvigorate menswear brand Berluti and appeal to the ever-growing masculine market. Since the culmination of the great recession, it’s a general consensus among the retail industry that menswear is where the dollars are to be made. Since 2009, spending on womenswear has transitioned to
less-expensive brands, such as Zara and H&M. The men who saved their pennies during the recession, on the other hand, not only returned to high-end brands when the economy recovered, but their taste actually became more expensive. According to consultancy firm Bain & Company, between 2009 and 2013, men’s luxury spending increased 55 percent, compared with 37 percent among women. The trend makes sense, especially with heritage menswear stores poised to fill a void for men interested in quality and traditional luxury. Truly luxurious menswear is historically intertwined with values that are a breath of fresh air in the modern world. The old-world elegance of a personal connection with your tailor or taking the time for a hot shave at the barber seems synonymous with doing good business or having a strong handshake. Luxury menswear is as much a feeling as it is a look.

Born in the USA These artisans are creating luxury fashion accessories right here in America. | BY STACEY FINNEGAN
S
o often when we think of luxury accessories, we get visions of Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel, Gucci and Louis Vuitton — and why wouldn’t we? As American consumers, we have been conditioned to associate luxury goods with fantasies of European travel and the invariably well-heeled designers that grace the cobblestones of Paris’s Avenue des Champs-Élysées and Milan’s Via Sant'Andrea. On a recent trip to New York, I let my intuition be my guide as I wandered through the famous Garment District. I stumbled upon some remarkable artisans who are making the Big Apple their home and luxury fashion accessories their lives. Here are their stories.
Anthony Luciano

60 hours to craft. His vintage frames are one-of-a-kind; Luciano produces a collection of 20 different day-bag styles, of which only six of each are created. Some of his specialty fabrications include python from Indonesia, fur from Greece, as well as alligator, crocodile and ostrich from South Africa.
Gerard Yosca
Gerard Yosca has been quietly hammering away, designing sculptural and wearable jewelry for more than 30 years in his artisan studio in the heart of New York City’s Garment District. A longtime member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, he is a staunch
believer in producing his collections here in America. He skillfully crafts his pieces by hand beginning with wax molds, often inspired by ancient Egyptian jewelry. Yosca’s winter 2014 collection is called Powerball and focuses on clean, sculptured domes, discs and teardrops. He uses hammered gold, oxidized silver and rose gold to create his sophisticated yet wearable pieces. Yosca’s perspective is that every woman should have at least two to three pieces that test the outer limits of their style as their own “pièce de résistance.” He loves to see women explore and develop their own personal style, fearlessly avoiding the follow-the-pack mentality. Isn’t it time to discover and evolve your look?
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAIMIEE MORSE
Anthony Luciano was born in upstate New York, and his passion to create bespoke handbags was inspired by his Italian heritage. After receiving his degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology, he held many posts before realizing his obsession with vintage handbags and his desire to create one-of-a-kind pieces. It is from this vision that the Anthony Luciano brand was launched in 2000 — and immediately picked up by Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus. To discover Luciano’s workshop on the top floor of an old building in the Garment District was nothing short of a miracle. When I stepped into his production studio, it was like being transported to another place and time. I watched as Luciano and his three fellow artisans worked side by side to hand produce satchels that define luxury. Luciano’s creativity is sparked by not only the leathers, skins and vintage components he finds but also by the architecture of New York and the creativity of the other artisans in this fantastic city. Featuring unique elements like his signature leather flowers, each bag takes an average of

of strange, novel, even conventionally hideous prints with killer construction. Her cut is highly tailored and playfully sexy — think bustier rompers, peg-leg trousers and peplum skirts. For her interview with Artful Living, Stanley chose a silk high-waisted skinny pant with embroidered flamingos on an electric-blue background. Her fall 2014 collection includes a sharply tailored short dress with black-and-white houndstooth and a flared miniskirt of heavy quilted knit fabric with navy squares and forest-green trim. The look is hot but with an edge — somewhat akin to lusting after Courtney Love or Mick Jagger. Hollywood calls this “sexy-ugly.” Harlyn is not an everywoman label; the designs really only zing when worn by women with pixie-ish bodies, like Stanley herself, which might explain why the line hasn’t really found traction in the Midwest, despite the designer’s connection. (The line’s hashtag is #harlynbabes for a reason.) Stanley’s designs have been favorited by the likes of Beyoncé and Lena Dunham, but exactly zero Minnesota boutiques have picked her up aside from the few items
available at Anthropologie. Stanley for her part still has mad Minnesota pride and returns home relatively often to visit family. Dad Randy is a mover and shaker at Parasole Restaurant Holdings and the mastermind behind Manny’s Steakhouse; Maria visited in June to fete the opening of his new high-end Wayzata bistro, 6Smith. She has a particularly special relationship with her mom, Dee, a fellow artistic spirit who taught her how to sew and encouraged her fanciful fashion dreams. For the spring 2014 collection, Maria included a sly tribute to Mom: a dreamy open-tie rayon trouser ($261) and matching ruffle-trimmed crop top ($187). She took the fabric from a summer dress her mom sewed in high school: orange, red and lemon-yellow poppies on a creamy pale background. “When I showed her the photos, she just cried,” Maria says. “That one’s special for sure.” Look for the Harlyn label at Anthropologie at the Shops at West End, on Grand Avenue, and at 50th & France.

n high school, Maria Stanley would go to the Big Dollar Store in Forest Lake and buy armloads of clothes — the gaudier, the better: belted dresses from the eighties in block prints, Big & Tall men’s shirts dotted with Hawaiian pineapples, batiked wrap skirts with moons and stars. Then she would rip them up and make new constructions: strappy dresses and camisoles, maxi skirts, and rompers. Today, the 26-year-old does essentially the same thing, but the pay is much better (up from zero). Seven years after graduating from Forest Lake Area High School, the fashion wunderkind is the sole designer for Harlyn, a Los Angeles–based label sold in more than 125 independent boutiques, including shops in Kuwait, Japan and Australia. During its debut season two years ago, the line was picked up by Neiman Marcus. Several of her designs are featured at Anthropologie, where Harlyn is a top seller. For Stanley, the line’s heart and soul has always been the prints. What makes her look stand out is the juxtaposition

Bob Dylan shapes auction history. | BY WENDY LUBOVICH
B
ob Dylan was just 24 years old when he pulled out sheets of stationery from the Roger Smith Hotel in Washington, D.C., and started writing. Scribbling in pencil, he made doodles of a hat and a bird in the margins while jotting down lyrics for “Like A Rolling Stone,” a song that would change the musical conversation from folk to rock. The tune is about a woman who is shunned from her family’s upper-class social scene: It was confrontational, electric and revolutionary at six minutes long. And while the song signaled a passage for Dylan’s career, the recent sale of this landmark document has marked a watershed of its own, selling at Sotheby’s New York for more than $2 million to an unidentified collector. The handwritten lyrics previously were owned by a California man who says he purchased the document directly from Dylan. “‘Like A Rolling Stone’ had enough age to make it valuable and desirable,” says Richard Austin, head of books and manuscripts at Sotheby’s New York. “The Holy Grail of rock lyrics has taken its rightful place as the most expensive popular-music manuscript sold at auction.” The June 2014 sale, entitled “Rock & Roll History: Presley to Punk,” was the first music-history auction for Sotheby’s in a decade, and presale viewings attracted people in their 20s up to their 80s. “Dylan and the Beatles are always popular,” Austin admits, “and there is still a strong interest in Elvis Presley, who has transcended the status of a music icon to become an American icon.” Taking in more than $4 million, the sale sparked fierce interest for future auctions. What’s hot now? Not just a guitar brought backstage for a musician to sign, “but a guitar the musician actually played in concert,” Austin says. “And if there is a photo of him with the guitar, all the better.”

In Your Wildest Dreams Neiman Marcus compiles more than 50 years of distinctive luxury. | BY MARGUERITE HAPPE
I
n the case of this compilation, “over the top” is a trite understatement. Produced by Neiman Marcus CEO Burt Tansky and printed by luxe publisher Assouline, Over the Top is a decadent guilty pleasure in and of itself. The bound, hardcover tome highlights the most indulgent, excessive gifts featured in the annual Neiman Marcus holiday catalog since 1939, with original imagery and pricing. What to get the person who has everything? Well, in 1970, the faithful paranoid could assuage fears of floods with a recreation of Noah’s Ark that could sleep 21 ($588,247). In 1959, impatient carnivores could order a live Black Angus steer, complete with barbecue set, delivered to the front door ($1,925). In 2003, aquatic fetishists could commission a custom-made mermaid suit creating a “realistic blend of female and fish” ($10,000). Last year’s catalog included “The Ultimate Outdoor Entertainment System,” a commercial cinema with a five-meter-wide screen, 16 speakers and four subwoofers, DVD Blu-ray player, and satellite system installed in your backyard ($1.5 million). The fantasy section is a place to dream, imagine and perhaps become slightly aghast at the excessiveness of the gifts. It’s in a playful spirit, though, and every present includes a $10,000 donation to the Heart of Neiman Marcus Foundation to bring enriching art experiences to youth. Neiman Marcus urges readers to remember that theirs is a world of whimsy, designed to amaze, amuse — and ensure customers have somewhere to shop for his-and-hers mini submarines. Over the Top is available for $60 on assouline.com.

Autumn Tresses Juut Salonspa master stylists reveal fall’s hottest hair looks. | BY MARGUERITE HAPPE
I
n Malcolm Gladwell’s examination of those who’ve achieved high levels of success in his book Outliers, his central thesis revolves around the “10,000-hour rule.” It states that approximately 10,000 hours of practice at a certain task will establish someone as an expert, a master in his or her field. Juut master stylists Anthony Lickteig and Leah Luebbe have put in their time and paid their dues, but the passion in those hours is what establishes them as experts. Luebbe is a second-generation stylist with childhood memories of toddling around her mother’s salon. For Lickteig, hairstyling is truly his passion: After “too many hours spent in corporate America,” he transitioned to a business where his personal values matched the company’s and the enjoyment was inherent in the job, not beyond his grasp. The two masters indulged us with an inside scoop about trends that will be coming

to heads near you. “For autumn, we’ll see plenty of center parts and deep side parts with no fringe,” says Luebbe. “Fall is also an amazing opportunity to experiment with hair accessories, like thick headbands, vintage side barrettes, or even just a sleek and polished ponytail.” For men, Lickteig says haircuts will continue to grow out of the shaved sides and back with pompadour style, something he says has reached “epic proportions” in the past couple years. “It’s a very cool, natural progression, with some of these styles being a nod to the fifties,” he adds. “It’s even possible we’ll start seeing some good flattops.” “There is absolutely nothing better as a confidence booster than a great haircut,” says Luebbe.

A New Beginning Hyundai masters functional luxury with the 2015 Genesis. | BY MAXWELL SHAPIRO
I
n the English lexicon, genesis is synonymous with origin and creation. On the road, Genesis represents quality, performance and all-around luxury. This season, Hyundai introduced its newly remodeled 2015 Genesis, the automaker’s most impressive sedan to date. Designed to compete with the likes of the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes E-Class and Lexus GS, the redesigned Genesis sports world-class technology to provide an unparalleled driving experience. The 2015 model was named Consumer Reports’ top-rated upscale sedan, a remarkable achievement for the South Korean company. Lane-departure warnings, rear-camera technology, blind-spot detection and the world’s first CO2-sensing ventilation system highlight the auto’s many new features. In addition to the advanced technology, the new HTRAC all-wheel drive makes the Genesis an appealing option for those living in the frozen tundra of the Midwest.

It actively optimizes torque flow to achieve maximum traction, regardless of road conditions. A look inside will leave passengers in awe: The interior features natural-grain wood, a soft, suede-like headliner and contrasting colored piping. Most importantly, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the 2015 Genesis a five-star safety rating — its best possible rating — in all impact and strength tests. The auto’s seatbelts and head restraints also received a superb rating for their whiplash protection in rear impacts. With this second-generation Genesis, Hyundai takes its place as the forerunner in functional luxury. Starting at $33,800, the 2015 Hyundai Genesis is available from Luther Bloomington Hyundai (952-377-2000, bloomingtonhyundai.com).

Cloudy With a Chance of Chaos Think enduring Minnesota weather is tough? Try forecasting it. | BY MIKE AUGUSTYNIAK
T
he conversation always begins the same way. I’m in line behind you at the grocery store (with ice cream in my cart, of course), and you’re talking to your trusty shopping companion. “They say it’s supposed to rain/snow/storm/be sunny later.” “Yeah, right. They always get it wrong.” Look, we meteorologists get it — criticism comes with the job. Whether the weather affects your livelihood or your cookout, a blown forecast is an enormous inconvenience. Go ahead — let us have it! (Please, though, have the courtesy to not blame me for an incorrect forecast someone else made. The moment you say that all forecasters are alike is the moment I tune you out and start thinking about that ice cream melting in my cart.) “Why can’t you guys just get it right?” you’ve probably wondered. Here’s why. Think of the atmosphere as a swimming pool. Whether you cannonball, wade or dip your toe into the water, the ripples eventually travel throughout the entire pool. Weather systems send ripples through the atmosphere, and all systems affect one another. The atmosphere is so complex that, in theory, the small vibrations caused by a butterfly flapping its wings in the Serengeti can cause a
76 Artful Living
| Autumn 2014
hurricane to form somewhere across the world several weeks later. This idea — coined “the butterfly effect” in 1969 by MIT meteorologist Edward Lorenz — is a cartoonish (but nevertheless possible) example of chaos theory, how wild outcomes are born of tiny variations. An accurate forecast begins with knowing what’s happening now, and we get a pretty good view of that using radar, satellites and ground-based reports. Some of the most important information comes from weather balloons, which are launched from some 800 worldwide locations twice a day and transmit temperature, moisture and wind measurements along their routes to the edge of space. Still, all of that data doesn’t give us a 100-percent accurate view of the present; there are gaps in coverage, especially over the oceans. Computers model how the atmosphere and storms behave, but to be accurate, they need to be fed high-quality, up-to-the-minute information — more than science can provide. That means that today’s forecasts are better than they were a decade ago but are far from perfect. We meteorologists interpret the models and use our forecasting experience to figure out what’s going to happen. But when chaos rules, you still might get rained on. At least now you’ll know why.

Motor Madness Eagan’s Auto Vault is a car lover’s haven. | BY MAXWELL SHAPIRO
“
For the love of cars” is the vision that propelled Mischa Redmond to turn his passion into a living. The self-proclaimed car fanatic — he has owned more than 270 vehicles in his adult lifetime — is turning what was once a hobby into a well-developed business. Earlier this year, the hands-on owner opened Auto Vault, an indoor storage facility for the die-hard car enthusiast. The 20,000-square-foot Eagan facility boasts climate-controlled indoor auto storage, a lounge for like-minded enthusiasts, and detailing, refill and valet services. It attracts all types of autos. A tour through the garage highlights the standard BMW and Mercedes models, of course. But guests also will witness more exotic specimen: Tesla, McLaren and Aston Martin creations are common throughout the space. Redmond believes Auto Vault is more than just a garage. “This place is a step above the rest, and there’s an emotional element to it,” he notes. “It’s for the love of cars. Auto Vault is a place for people who love cars to share their passion, talk cars and gather with like-minded people.” And he is right; the unique concept allows it to be more than just a storage space. Auto Vault offers professional washing and waxing services as well as vehicle photography. Complimentary truffles and bottled water are presented to members upon visiting. In addition, Auto Vault plays host to several catered events for its members and insiders, held monthly in the private lounge. Another unique feature is Auto Vault’s specialized pickup and drop-off services for frequent fliers. Guests can store their cars in the climate-controlled garage — conveniently located just 10 minutes from the Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport and equipped with 24-hour video surveillance — for a mere $15 a day. And look for more: Auto Vault plans to add 16,000 square feet to the existing space. A patio and bar for outdoor events is scheduled for later this year, and personalized “man caves” will be available for insiders to house their vehicles in their own private garage within the facility. uality, comfort, timelessness: Award-winning Twin Cities designer Carol Belz has been committed to these tenets for more than 37 years. Her classic style mixed with a modern touch is exactly what the Minneapolis Club desires for delivering an amazing aesthetic experience. In recent years, the club has renovated or remodeled nearly every room in its clubhouse. Tapping a residential interior designer is a risky move, as the club’s décor elements take much more abuse than in a home setting, but providing a “home away from home” feeling is what General Manager Frank DiLapo aims for. “We have purposely avoided using commercial vendors as we want everyone to feel comfortable in the welcoming, luxurious setting,” he notes. “Carol helps create this feeling through colors and pieces that are elegant yet relaxed.” The club’s grill is one of the latest rooms to be completely renovated. Executive Chef Håkan Lundberg’s innovative food style mixes with molecular ingredients to create artful and memorable dishes. Now, the cuisine really pops in the room’s bright light and fresh colors. The space was modeled after the famous five-star Connaught in London. Mixing modern flourishes throughout the traditional classic architecture is

NEW YORK EAT
GREEN SPACE A star is reborn.
| BY WENDY LUBOVICH Tavern on the Green, Central Park West and 67th Street, New York 212-877-8684 // tavernonthegreen.com
The handsomely renovated Tavern on the Green is the inspired place to take in the graceful sweep of Central Park. After a four-year hiatus, the historic restaurant is chicer than ever, with double the outdoor dining space. The mahogany-lined Bar Room evokes a European hunting lodge with its carved ram’s-head fireplace and curved scarlet banquettes. Replacing the former Crystal Room, the window-filled Central Park Room looks out on the foliage from nearly every seat. “We wanted to become one with the park,” says General Manager Celso Moreira. “We did everything we could to take advantage of the views.” Restaurateurs Jim Caiola and David Salama of the Emerald Green Group took the 1871 building down to its studs for the multimillion-dollar renovation, retaining only the half-timbered ceilings from the original sheepfold structure. Chef Katy Sparks lords over the open, massive kitchen, where dishes are offered by cooking method: hearth, grill or la plancha. This fall, live jazz will animate the outdoor cocktail lounge, with its bucolic views of nearby Sheep Meadow. And come winter, a giant, clear tent will keep diners warm and toasty while they watch snow gently falling in the park.

A PLAYFUL STAY The Archer Hotel packs plenty of personality.
| BY WENDY LUBOVICH The Archer Hotel, 45 W. 38th St., New York 212-719-4100 // archerhotel.com
Taking its cue from the famed Garment District surrounding it, the new Archer Hotel aims to be cut from a different cloth. The boutique property's 180 guest rooms are decked out in four distinct design palettes. At check-in, a sort of “room roulette” is played; travelers do not know which of the designs they will get. “It’s both random and fun,” says Carla Caccavale, Archer’s public-relations representative. Created by LodgeWorks, the rooms feature custom platform beds with handy drawers underneath, Frette towels and robes, and Malin+Goetz bath products. Adding a little personality are the Archer’s Playing Cards, which list 50-plus timeless tips of courtesy and etiquette. “It’s meant to be playful,” Caccavale explains. On the first floor, David Burke’s Fabrick feels lively and fun with fire-engine red chairs and its open kitchen; menus are trimmed with pinking-sheared edges, like a vintage fabric swatch. In-room dining includes the famed Burke in the Box selections. And up on the roof, views from the Spyglass cocktail lounge appear positively surreal, the soaring Empire State Building glowing in all its neon charm.

HIDDEN GEM This diamond in the rough may be New York’s best-kept secret.
| BY WENDY LUBOVICH
Gale Grant, 485 Madison Ave., New York 212-752-3142 // galegrant.com
Gale Grant is the kind of place New Yorkers like to keep to themselves. A tiny jewelry box of a shop, it features thousands upon thousands of earrings, bracelets and brooches, laid out end to end like candies in a vitrine. “When people walk in, they just stand and stare,” says co-owner Paula Gould. “We certainly know how to make an impression.” The baubles are organized according to color, metal and type. You won’t find just three pairs of turquoise-colored earrings but 300. Same goes for coral earrings, crystal brooches and resin bangles. Choosing is both the delight and dilemma. “We let people come behind the counter and have a look,” notes Gould. “They can touch and try — it’s all part of the experience.” The shop is named after co-owner Richard Gould’s aunt, who was legendary in the New York jewelry scene. She helped make so-called “travel jewelry” fashionable, even coveted. Costume jewelry blossomed in the forties and fifties, when movie stars sported bold pieces for the camera. The faux jewelry worn by style icons
Elizabeth Taylor and Diana Vreeland became an American staple, and today, those same designs carry a chic vintage vibe. In fact, the same pieces from the 1960s are on offer today from the likes of legendary designer Kenneth Jay Lane. “His turquoise cabochon oval cuff was one of our biggest sellers then and still is today,” says Richard. But what’s genius here is the startling assortment of clip earrings. In-the-know customers understand drop earrings in pierced ears can feel heavy and uncomfortable. “But with clips, you can wear a dramatic earring more easily,” reveals Paula. “Even our customers with pierced ears often prefer the clips, and we carry hundreds of them.” The trick is getting the store's owners to adjust the clip so it fits just right. It’s that kind of personal attention that makes Gale Grant feel like an old-time shop. Loyal customers return with their daughters and granddaughters to bond over the bejeweled treasures. Much of the jewelry is produced in Italy, France and Greece, with newer lines like Julie Vos being made in New York. It’s the kind of chunky, statement jewelry major fashion houses like J.Crew and Dior are featuring today. But Gale Grant has been ground zero for the look for six decades. At the height of the costume-jewelry craze in the 1980s, there were lines around the block. “We had to lock the door to limit the number of people,” remembers Paula. And today, they’re still lining up at the secret little shop New Yorkers like to keep to themselves.

The current assortment includes 30 brands (think La Mer, Tom Ford and Yves Saint Laurent), ranging from cosmetics to skin care. CHEF’S CHOICE In Los Angeles, Sugarfish is synonymous with sushi.

Beverly Hills turned 100 in January. Celebrating the city’s tradition of elegance and entertainment, The Peninsula Beverly Hills unveiled its nineties-themed “Birth of Modern Luxury” suite, designed to pay homage to the decade the hotel opened. Design house Forchielli Glynn transformed Suite 100 (naturally) to celebrate modern Hollywood, complete with awards-gala glamour. The elegantly appointed room is decorated with a mural suggesting a red-carpet arrival. The color palette in the living and dining room space uses rich, dark woods accented by mirrored walls and a glittering crystal chandelier. Rich, red upholstery combined with black and white outfits the plush sofas and chairs. The bedroom features warm colors with mirrored walls perfectly accented by silver finishes. The delights abound when booking Suite 100, such as a special in-room nineties-themed dining menu, an iPod playlist with tunes from the era and a DVD collection of Oscar-winning films. Head to the spa and be treated like an A-list celebrity with a treatment and an array of products from Oscar de la Renta. Enjoy lunch poolside in your own cabana. Want a night out on the town? Chief Concierge James Little is on hand for a private consultation to curate the most glamorous evening plans. Take advantage of Beverly Hills’ 100-year anniversary; the package is only available through 2014.
While sushi restaurants are a dime a dozen in Los Angeles, everyone has their go-to spot, from strip-mall hole-in-the-walls to swanky high-end outposts. One eatery that continuously tops the favorites list of celebrities and locals alike is the laid-back but upscale Sugarfish. With eight locations spanning the area, including Brentwood, Santa Monica, Marina del Rey and downtown, one of the finest sushi offerings in town is always in close proximity. Acclaimed chef Kazunori Nozawa operates his restaurants on the purity of basic ingredients, serving only traditional sushi of the highest quality. He shuns “American-style” rolls (battered, fried and sauce-laden), instead cutting his fish with an artisan’s attention to detail and serving it with his own soy and ponzu sauces. The menu offers à-la-carte options, but the way to truly experience Sugarfish is to order Nozawa’s “trust me” menu. This seven- to 10-course meal concentrates on quality and simplicity, serving tender cuts like salmon and yellowtail placed on warm, loose rice seasoned with light ponzu or soy sauce — the perfect combination. Each plate is served as soon as it is prepared, and you are encouraged to eat as soon as the dishes arrive. Operating like a well-oiled machine, the courses are timed to perfection. Serving lunch and dinner, Sugarfish does not take reservations, and wait times can be upward of 45 minutes. But trust us: It’s worth the wait.

LIVED-IN LUXURY The Soho House feels just like home.

BY FRANK ROFFERS
Soho House Chicago, 113-125 N. Green St., Chicago 312-521-8000 // sohohousechicago.com
Just when it seemed the Windy City was all set with a collection of new boutique hotels, another one debuts to shake things up. Located in the century-old, six-story Chicago Belting Company building in the West Loop (a stone’s throw from famed eatery Girl & the Goat), the intimate property houses just 40 guest rooms. All feature king-size beds with Egyptian cotton sheets and walk-in rainforest showers. The concept originated in London in 1995 as a private members’ club for those in the film, media and creative industries. Soho House has since extended its empire, with U.S. outposts in New York City, Miami Beach and West Hollywood. The clubhouse rules? No photos, no mobile phones, no suits — and only one guest per member. Members will find comfort in the signature lived-in look; the exposed brick walls contrast with shabby-chic décor (think vintage chandeliers, velvet sofas and Persian rugs). A 30-seat cinema shows new releases, classics and children’s movies. Food and drink are available, and the space can be rented for private screenings and events. A swank rooftop pool with retractable glass-enclosed bar and restaurant shines with panoramic views of the Chicago skyline. Cowshed Spa is the place to relax and indulge. Get your workout on in the 15,000-square-foot gym, centered around a vintage boxing ring with two workout studios and a steam room. On the ground floor are the Allis bar (named for the family that commissioned the building in 1907) and open-to-the-public eateries Chicken Shop and Pizza East. The former features free-range chicken, marinated and grilled over a charcoal rotisserie; the latter serves up charcuterie, pasta and rustic-style pizza. Members and guests can appreciate the care that went into remodeling the space. A bit of history was salvaged when the rooftop water tower was removed plank by plank and repurposed as a mural in the lobby. The marble mosaic at the entrance has been recreated, spelling out "Allis Building" as it did for the first 100 years.

MEDITERRANEAN MARVEL A four-star chef transforms food of the street into food of the gods.

BY MICHAEL NAGRANT

Travelle, 330 N. Wabash Ave., Chicago 312-923-7705 // travellechicago.com
Falafel rarely signals a night of luxury. But that’s because you’ve probably never had it prepared by a four-star chef in a high-end hotel while slurping down a $275 bottle of 2011 Criots-Batard-Montrachet White Burgundy. That’s just what you’ll get at Travelle in the swanky Langham hotel, where chef Tim Graham, a veteran of Tru, has created an incredible food and wine pairing program. Instead of some crusty, frozen, pre-made chickpea balls, you get fluffy, cumin- and coriander-wafting, mahogany-colored fried torpedoes of chickpea nestled in a velvety vadouvan-spiced (French-Indian curry) yogurt sauce. Graham also serves up a luxuriant creamy muhammara, a red-pepper hummus of sorts, with warm, house-baked pita balloons. But it’s not all spiffed-up street food at Travelle. There’s fine seacuterie: cured seafood that includes a purple mosaic of octopus carpaccio, a mousse-like scallop boudin blanc, and a golden anise- and saffron-scented bouillabaisse terrine. There’s the Provencal-inspired sea-bass salad tossed with verdant favas, and then there’s the crispy seared walleye tossed with bursting garden-fresh tomatoes drizzled with pomegranate vinaigrette. Expense-account plush carnivores will delight in the grilled rib eye and caramelized vegetables swimming in a custardy gribiche sauce. Travelle has one of the better wine lists in the city. If you’re feeling particularly flush, there’s a 1970 Château Latour Pauillac to wash it all down. Modern drinker? Try the mineral-rich F.X. Pichler Gruner Veltliner. Old-world connoisseurs will enjoy the $475 Chateau Rayas Chateauneuf-du-Pape. This is all served in an airy perch lavished with Nordic-style walnut chairs, plush leather banquettes and mirrored ceiling tiles. The dining room, which teems with geeky sommeliers and doting tie-and-vest-clad waiters, affords an incredible up-close-and-personal view of Chicago architecture, including maybe the most intimate look at Marina City (the iconic corncob towers). As you finish the last forkful of Nutella-larded baklava garnished with glistening pearls of sweet balsamico, you will heave a sigh of satisfaction that a night at Travelle is very much the essence of the good life.

CHICAGO ROCK CITY Thompson Chicago gives Ziggy Stardust fans the star treatment.

BY FRANK ROFFERS
Thompson Chicago, 21 E. Bellevue Pl., Chicago 312-266-2100 // thompsonchicago.com
David Bowie is is a $2-million, 400-piece multimedia retrospective rocking the Museum of Contemporary Art through Jan. 4, 2015. It is the largest, most expensive exhibit ever staged in the museum’s 47-year history, and Chicago is the only U.S. stop for the traveling blockbuster. The show focuses on the music legend’s creative processes, collaborations with artists and designers, and influence in realms far beyond music. Exhibit elements include a larger-than-life video screen wrapping around three walls, costumes created by Alexander McQueen, an audio tour, and an art show. Thompson Chicago offers an exclusive backstage pass allowing guests to bypass the long lines at MCA. The package includes two VIP tickets to the exhibit plus a private meet-and-greet with a museum concierge. And don’t forget the build-your-own Ziggy Stardust cocktail kit — for creating the perfect red-and-blue-layered concoction. “Working with MCA and being the only U.S. stop for the David Bowie is exhibit is not only an honor but a natural fit for us,” says Steve Shern, the hotel’s general manager. “We are excited to provide all of our David Bowie fans staying with Thompson Chicago a unique and memorable experience.”

The Broadmoor, 1 Lake Ave., Colorado Springs 719-623-5112 // broadmoor.com
Mention the Broadmoor in casual conversation, and chances are someone will have a personal connection to the illustrious luxury resort nestled in the mountains of Colorado Springs. Their grandparents honeymooned there in the fifties? Their fond childhood memories include running around the manicured grounds and steering paddleboats around the lake? The Broadmoor holds a treasured spot in the hearts of many, and for good reason. Touted as the Grand Dame of the Rockies, the historic resort has been a beloved getaway since the early 20th century. Ranked at five stars by the Forbes Travel Guide and AAA, the registered Historic Hotel of America delivers an experience nothing short of spectacular. Following a massive two-year renovation, guests now can stay in the impeccably revamped Broadmoor West. Those with a spirit for adventure can journey up to the brand-new Cloud Camp, a retreat featuring a dozen cabins located 9,200 feet above the breathtaking Cheyenne Mountain. The all-inclusive camp and wilderness experience can be reached one of three ways: a shuttle, guided hike or mule ride. Whether enjoying a journey through the great outdoors or a relaxing vacation in the sumptuous Broadmoor, each guest’s experience becomes part of the history defining this iconic American destination.

Natural Epicurean, 1 Lake Ave., Colorado Springs 719-623-5112 // broadmoor.com
Picture yourself sitting on a sunlit patio surrounded by the Rocky Mountains as you sip an antioxidant-infused, cold-pressed juice. Meet The Broadmoor’s latest restaurant: Natural Epicurean. The concept was founded on four tenants: healthy, wholesome, organic and natural. Everything from the design aesthetic (think white Calcutta countertops, sustainable floors and repurposed-wood tables) to the health-centric menu is light and airy, prepared to fuel the body and mind. The menu changes seasonally and features dishes by local Colorado growers and ranchers. You will find starters and snacks like marinated red beets tossed with chipotle pico de gallo and cilantro served atop quinoa. Entrées include a range of vegan, vegetarian, raw and gluten-free options to suit your lifestyle. Try the grilled Atlantic swordfish with green peas, butter lettuce and red quinoa, or the Indonesian stir-fry with grilled tempeh, spinach, green beans, garden vegetables, steamed brown rice and peanuts. After a healthy refuel, you might even be ready to tackle Manitou Incline — one mile of vertical incline that tests even the fittest of hikers — or white-water raft down the Colorado River. Whatever your day holds, a health-conscious and delicious meal is the best preparation for the adventure that awaits you.

The Spa at the Broadmoor, 1 Lake Ave., Colorado Springs 719-623-5112 // broadmoor.com
The Broadmoor’s legacy is that of ultimate sophistication and luxury. Combining the best of the manmade and natural worlds, it is a refreshing reminder of elegance at its very highest level. As the spa confidently proclaims, “If you’ve been here, you know.” And the legions of customers serviced during the past several centuries do indeed know the marvel of the Spa at the Broadmoor. Beginning with the aromatherapy room (regularly infused with mists of eucalyptus for a cleansing experience), dry sauna room and steam room, the Broadmoor gently reminds customers why they are there: to enjoy the experience of indulgence, relaxation and restoration. Guests then transition to the aptly named, world-famous Grand Mountain View Relaxation Room. Comfortable chaise lounges, floor-to-ceiling windows and crisp mountain air reinvigorate the senses. Hydrotherapy, facials and more round out the extensive services list. Those in need of total relaxation will enjoy the signature massage, a combination of Swedish technique and massage to calm and soothe the body from scalp to toe. An experience at the Spa at the Broadmoor is not just about relaxing but about understanding the stress and strain our bodies endure day after day as well as appreciating the power of nature in restoration and healing. The mind, body and soul are refreshed after a stop at this magnificent spa — and if you’ve been there, you know.

Minneapolis’s first micro-distillery uses the best local ingredients to create small, hand-crafted batches of exceptionally fine spirits with the hopes of inspiring legendary cheer in those who drink them. Norseman owner and head distiller Scott Ervin oversees the production of each and every batch of gin, rum, vodka and whiskey from start to finish. Through countless tests and trials, he and his two trusty boozehounds, Max and Rocket, have perfected the recipes and process. We’ll toast to that.
Born in 1999, Anodyne Coffee Roasting Company has stayed true to small-batch production in its devotion to serving an exceptional cup of joe. Shop the roasts from across the world — made possible through partnerships with cooperatives in such places as Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Guatemala and Honduras — or visit one of Anodyne’s distinct local cafes, hubs of neighborhood activity.

Herb and Kathy Eckhouse started La Quercia in 2005 to create premium American prosciutto. Employing that method using the bounty of the Midwest, La Quercia offers a collection of award-wining salumi (artisan-cured Italian meats), including prosciutto, pancetta, coppa, speck, lonza, guanciale and lardo. Natural Selection Top Twin Cities restaurants look to Amsum & Ash for stunning stone. | BY LORI STORM

| Autumn 2014
PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDREA RUGG
ining out is never just about the eating, especially in the foodie city of Minneapolis. Restaurateurs have to set the table for an experience. Design is critical, as are the materials. Architects for Twin Cities hot spots Burch and Travail found plenty of inspiration working with Amsum & Ash, a Minneapolis-based international importer and wholesale distributor of natural stone products. At the acclaimed Burch Steak and Pizza Bar in uptown Minneapolis, the company’s mark is subtle yet striking. The bar tops are large installations of elegant soapstone, hand selected from one of Amsum & Ash’s nine quarries in India and Brazil. Each counter has its own distinct character, dark gray in color with varying emerald and green tones throughout. “We were very interested in finding a stone for Burch that had richness in terms of the depth of color and the feel — the soapstone from Amsum & Ash really fit the bill,” says Matthew Kreilich, principal of Snow Kreilich Architects. “There are so many faux surfaces out there, so to have a material that’s actually real is refreshing.” Amsum & Ash specializes in the real thing, sourcing soapstone, granite, marble, slate, onyx and sandstone through its parent company, Tab India, one of the world’s largest stone-product manufacturers. The Minneapolis staff also makes regular trips to Italy to scout and select the finest stone, adding to the company’s deep inventory. “When designers, architects and homeowners come to us, they are looking for something unique, something nobody else has,” says Amsum & Ash sales executive Chelsea Geenen. “We have the best selection, and it’s boutique — exactly the way our owner, Amit Gupta, wants it.” There are more than 2,000 slabs in Amsum & Ash’s stone gallery, with rows and rows of giant 5-by-8-foot blocks on display in grand fashion. The company also has an impressive showroom at International Market Square. “What really struck me was the ability to walk through their gallery and see slabs that I hadn’t seen before — truly unique colors and stone types,” notes Michael Anschel,

principal of Otogawa-Anschel Design+Build, who looked to Amsum & Ash to help create the newest incarnation of Travail Kitchen and Amusements in Robbinsdale. “We had a similar desire to innovate with the material in ways that aren’t commonplace. We wanted to push the envelope.” Travail features 15 types of stone in unusual and avant-garde ways. It stretches vertically and even curves around walls, dominating workspaces, countertops and bathrooms. There isn’t a single motif and nothing is uniform — a visual cue that the restaurant and its menu are always in flux and constantly evolving. No one paged through endless catalogs to find the right stone, Anschel insists. Instead, architects for both restaurants say Amsum & Ash provided ideas, possibilities and real solutions. “We were able to convey our vision verbally and through images and drawings, and they would produce options,” Kreilich affirms. “They are incredibly collaborative.” Geenen calls it concierge-style service: “It’s like having your own personal shopper. For autumn, Melanson and employee Jennifer Kokal expect to see plenty of fireplace installations before the brutal Minnesota winter as well as a transition to polished brass and polished nickel for home hardware. “This is different brass than your grandma’s house,” says Melanson. “Polished brass really warms up the home and looks gorgeous with dark wood.” Other trends for fall include organic and rustic-looking appliances for a more natural feel. “We are experts in this and have been since the store opened in 1977,” he adds. “It’s a different type of shopping experience, and we make it easy for you to find beautiful, functional pieces for your home.”

inneapolis residents driving down Hennepin Avenue will pass Lawrence Weiner’s conceptual artwork on the side of the Walker Art Center: large white block letters spelling out “Bits & Pieces Put Together to Present a Semblance of a Whole.” His figurative art performed in a typographical format is applicable to culture, art, life and the home. The bits and pieces that tie together doors, kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms and cabinets are what Galleria boutique Brass Handle specializes in: luxury hardware. “It’s like jewelry for the home,” says Galleria stylist Rhonda Ruhland of Brass Handle’s collections for the home. The family-owned business carries everything from door handles to mailboxes to fireplaces to bathtubs, with one shared characteristic. “Our products are of a quality that you can’t find at Lowe’s or Home Depot,” says shop owner David Riedel Melanson. He took over the company from another family member in July and is passionate about the difference customers experience working with a small business. “The Brass Handle carries lines that just cannot be found anywhere else in the Twin Cities.”

sound-insulating properties create a quieter environment with less echo. Want to outfit your home with hardwood floors but not sure what to look for? “The fastest growing product segment in hard surfaces today is luxury vinyl,” says Floors of Distinction’s Annette Schwartz. Manufacturers have developed a state-of-the-art replication process that imitates the look and graining of real wood, natural stone or tile. Comfort and aesthetics are combined in luxury vinyl, which brings the texture and warmth of hardwood floors to any space with the bonus of being slip-resistant, water-resistant, dent-resistant and easy to clean. “Whether you decide to go with hardwood, luxury vinyl, carpet or another flooring type, patterns can provide some interest or make a bold statement,” says Sandberg.

alls: We put them up. We tear them down. We climb them. They close in on us. And even though they’re everywhere — most rooms have more wall space than floor space — we relegate them to a supporting role, their unrealized potential lying dormant while they hold up a cluster of outdated family photos or a print that matches the sofa. But what if, instead of being a backdrop for art, the walls were the art? That’s the premise behind AREA Environments, a Minneapolis-based company that’s giving fine art a new perspective. “We curate original work from artists all over the world and use it to create wall coverings,” explains Diane Perry, operations manager for the company. And when one of those creations is blown up to fill an entire wall, it generates a visual impact that’s typically only found in art galleries or sizable public spaces. Imagine an expanse of delicately detailed peonies magnified to such great proportions they spark a sense of kinship with the bees pollinating real flowers outside. Or a gritty splash of abstract graffiti — on an abandoned building, it’s passé; on a living-room wall, it’s au courant. “When you blow it up that large, it makes a huge statement,” says Kathryn Korb, AREA Environments cofounder and creative director. “There’s a wow factor — something you wouldn’t necessarily have in a 4-by-5-foot painting.” She curates the company’s collection, working closely with 12 local and international artists whose styles range from traditional to avant-garde. “Our collection is really diverse,” Korb says. “We have something for everybody’s taste.” Each work can be scaled up or down according to the desired aesthetic and the size of the wall. Color schemes can be changed as well. “We do a lot of color and scale changes,” notes Korb. “If someone is working with a different color palette than the original art, we can change it.” Along with murals, AREA Environments offers a collection of artist-designed patterns. Clients can use their own art as well. And if the almost limitless possibilities aren’t enough, the wall coverings are portable. “They’re repositionable,” Korb explains. “You can literally pull them off, and it looks like there was nothing on the wall,” Perry adds. “So you have a huge piece of art that you can take with you.” Ingenuity is in AREA Environments’ DNA. Its parent company, Apropos, has been creating custom wall coverings for specialty retailers for nearly 25 years. Korb says that when she and Apropos owner Jamie Reich met, there was an instantaneous creative spark. “Within 10 minutes, we were talking about doing something with wallpaper and using the printing aspect of Apropos,” she recalls. “We decided to commission artists, use original artwork and translate it into murals. We had no clue how to do it; it was a total experiment.” But after almost three years, it’s safe to say that gamble has been a success. Dramatic, sophisticated, unique and portable, wall coverings by AREA Environments are works of art that impact and influence the spaces they surround. “This is edgy, new, progressive and contemporary,” Korb declares. “Our environments are where we make the statement about ourselves.”

Retro Redux An unused attic transforms into a midcentury modern gem. | BY CAROLYN CROOKE
T
he eclectic look may be the current trend for interiors, but this attic space shows the stunning effect achieved by working entirely within one architectural period. The style here: midcentury modern. The owners of this Lake Harriet area home worked with the builders and remodelers of Vujovich Design Build and Taunya Nelson of White Space Architecture to transform a raw,
dusty attic — formerly nothing but storage and subflooring — into this engaging, versatile space. “Architecturally, this home is what I’d call transitional,” explains one of the homeowners. “It’s a fluid mix of styles on the cusp between Victorian and Arts and Crafts. Because of this, we saw no reason not to go in different design directions.” He and his wife followed diverse inspirations on different floors. The basement, another collaboration

with Vujovich, is an award-winning art deco–style billiards and entertainment room. The attic space, on the other hand, is designed to serve as an office and workout area. “When we thought about this space, we saw the advantages of a clean, simple design using midcentury modern furnishings,” the homeowner says. “We have always appreciated the design of that era.” The couple was especially taken by the architecture of modernist Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, who shared many influences with the modernists, such as cubism and the principles of showcasing fine materials and natural beauty. The style embraces a “less is more” aesthetic. At the start of the project, the homeowners didn’t own any modern furnishings; they began researching and collecting. “When the homeowners decided to focus on this particular era, they became quite knowledgeable about it,” notes Beth Malmberg of Vujovich. “Finding the furnishings was half the fun,” the homeowner adds.
“We had no timetable, no pressure.” Several of the standout vintage pieces were Craigslist finds, such as the black leather Eames chair with ottoman and the pair of white Barcelona chairs, created by Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich for the 1929 world’s fair. Other pieces, like the couch and satellite-style light fixture, are reproductions from Design Within Reach. “My wife is a huge fan of the egg chair, which I think of as the Dr. Evil chair,” the homeowner notes. “I love the Eames chair. This space is great as an office, but it has turned out to be a fun place to spend time with guests, like a surprise lounge.” The Vujovich team also added a bathroom: a gorgeous floating sink anchored to the wall that echoes the low-slung lines of the main room, allowing this versatile space to be used as a guest room as desired. The layout works beautifully around the dormers and rooflines, turning some of the space’s restrictions into advantages. Notes the homeowner: “We have a great rapport with Vujovich, and they understood the space.”

Practically Romantic For this Edina family, the dream home is in the details. |
BY ELIZABETH FOY LARSEN

W
hen you take five years to plan your dream home, you want to make sure you’ll be in it long after your children have lives of their own. In a stunning new house in the exclusive Rolling Green neighborhood of Edina, one forward-thinking couple did just that, combining the best of family living — an open floor plan, loads of indoor and outdoor play spaces, a mudroom with racks for mittens and hats — with an aging-in-place pragmatism that includes a meticulously organized kitchen and a main-level master suite. Such practical considerations often can drain the romance out of a home. But in this case, they serve to showcase the homeowners’ and their design team’s creativity. The bulk of the main floor — an open layout that combines the living room, dining room and kitchen — is an artful combination of modern lines and organic accents, with beams from an 1820s farmhouse supporting the living room’s gabled ceiling. “They feel like art pieces,” says the owner. “They bring soul and character to the house.”
208 Artful Living
| Autumn 2014
The living room’s dramatic ceiling is echoed on a smaller scale by the dining room’s gabled sunlight, which casts daylight on a dining table that easily transitions from a homework station to a formal dinner for 12. The couple originally didn’t want an eating space beyond the kitchen, but lead designer Damien Lindquist of Sharratt Design & Company rightly convinced them it would enhance the way their family lives. The relaxed-yet-glamorous interior design, a collaboration between the owners and Linda Engler of Engler Studios, is equally family-friendly, with carpeting that’s soft enough for a wrestling match and neutral fabrics that can withstand sleepovers and late-night movie watching. Larger-scale furnishings ensure that the spaces don’t feel overwhelming. While the entire home is designed to bring the trees and hills of Rolling Green inside, the showstopper is the outside porch, which is more like a family room with its fireplace, TV and retractable phantom screens. It’s also the perfect place to admire the luscious landscaping courtesy of Scott Ritter of Topo. The golf-loving family watched the Masters Tournament here, fending off the April chill with blankets and Restoration Hardware slippers, which are stored in a built-in cabinet. The construction process, including the teardown of the original house, took award-winning builders John Kraemer & Sons 13 months to complete. The mountain-rustic-meets-Minneapolis-Craftsman exterior is made of stucco and other low-maintenance materials, including Minnesota limestone. “I love how the home is very traditional on the exterior but has a more modern and clean interior,” says John Kraemer. “The project was a true collaboration, which is evident in the stunning final product.” At 9,100 square feet, with such extras as a state-of-the-art wine cellar and a lower-level lair for the family’s two sons (their daughter’s bedroom is on the second floor), the house is not what anyone would call cozy. Yet it never feels imposing. Two stalls of the L-shaped, four-car garage blend into the side of the house and can’t be seen from the street. The front door is tucked away so that the home’s façade can incorporate more windows. “We wanted a house that was beautiful,” says the homeowner, “but also a place where people would feel like they could put their feet on the couch.”
comfort for the ages This newly built home allows for family function and an eventual empty nest.

Design Dynamos M|A Peterson interior designers bring versatility to a new level. |
BY MARGUERITE HAPPE
T
o call Shannon Allen and Lynn Woodruff interior designers seems a massive understatement. Yes, they can pick out pretty paint colors and create inspiring interiors, but shouldn’t there be some title that sums up their expertise as space planner, architect, construction project manager and interior designer wrapped into one? The dictionary doesn’t include a word for that quite yet, but any client who works with either of these designers immediately understands the value of this well-rounded knowledge.
Both have logged decades with M|A Peterson Designbuild, taking the title of interior designer to a whole new level. They work with other creative experts on staff to create some of the most remarkable homes in the Twin Cities, both new builds and remodels. The designers praise founder and owner of M|A Peterson, Mark Peterson, for being one of the first to hire on-staff interior designers decades before it was the norm. “For many builders, inviting an interior designer on board is intimidating and hard — and not everybody wants hard,” notes Allen. “Mark wasn’t afraid to collaborate and bring that

213
expertise in-house, because he knew it was ultimately better for the client.” “That’s how we became so cohesive,” adds Woodruff. “We’re a one-stop shop, so we have a start-to-finish presence with all of our clients.” When asked what a typical M|A Peterson home looks like, the designers are emphatic that there is no standard style. “We find out the personality of the client and create an environment that’s better than they could ever imagine,” says Woodruff. From historic to contemporary to farmhouse to guesthouse, any project is welcome — and M|A Peterson will ensure that the walls to the carpet to the fireplace to the landscaping are all perfectly, comfortably wrapped into one happy place.
“This home was a historic 1920s property in Edina’s Country Club neighborhood. It’s an absolutely stunning home with very traditional details, but it needed an update to bring back some of the truth that had been a bit lost in remodels over the years. We did everything from completely moving the staircase to bringing back color schemes to give it a happy, warm feel with bright corals, purples and yellows. The homeowners were in love with the final result, and we loved adding new touches that ironically enhanced the traditional feel of the home.”
Modern Digs
“The homeowner was a single guy who had never worked with a designer before, and once he understood that I truly was looking out for his best interests, we were able to add some exquisite detail. The idea was to add as many textures and layers as possible while keeping it very sleek and modern. We have our own cabinet shop, so the cabinets were very detailed with beautiful graining. Like with the cabinets, we love highlighting a beautiful detail and adding in different layers of texture.” – SHANNON ALLEN

Maybe you’ll go kayaking, paddleboarding, surfing, snorkeling or scuba diving. How about chartering a boat for some world-class deep-sea fishing? Located on Isla Bastimentos of the Bocas del Toro archipelago on the Caribbean coast, Red Frog Beach is a vacation community featuring a variety of homes and an astounding array of activities. Currently in Phase One, initial offerings include upscale villas with private pools; eco-friendly, Balinese-style, thatched-roof jungle lodges; deeded fractional villa ownership and a soon-to-be-built 30-unit condominium hovering on a hillside above the sea. The property also has two restaurants and a spa. “We can meet just about anybody’s needs,” says Joe Haley, president of Oceans Group International, a Panamanian development company that’s led by a group of Twin Cities–based partners and responsible for the project. That’s true for the seafaring crowd, too. Taking advantage of its hurricane-free location, Red Frog Beach boasts a world-class, deep-water marina with 115 slips ranging in size from 40 to more
than 110 feet. “We’re becoming known as an epicenter for mega-yachts where people can enjoy themselves in a calm bay outside the hurricane belt,” says Haley. “Elin Nordegren [Tiger Woods’ ex-wife] was just there with her new boyfriend. We also had the Walton family there with a 240-foot boat.” The resort has attracted a number of celebrities and professional athletes, plus it’s been featured on such television shows as HGTV’s House Hunters International, CBS’s Survivor and MTV’s Naked Dating. But that’s no surprise: Thanks to its namesake white-sand beach, calm waters and rainforest setting, Red Frog Beach’s unspoiled beauty is an irresistible draw. And according to Haley, that’s never going to change. “We are arguably the most responsible large-scale resort in Latin America,” he states, noting that the current development phase occupies just 100 of the property’s 1,500 acres. “We’ll preserve more than 80 percent of the land forever.” Even so, exciting plans are in the works: “We’ll be doing larger estates and cool projects like zip-in/zip-out treehouses 100 feet off the ground accessed by the zip-line canopy tour,” says Haley. “We have a letter of intent for a high-end, 20-unit, tree-house-type hotel. And we’d like to do a fishing outpost; the fishing here is unbelievable.”

Investing in Red Frog Beach isn’t limited to purchasing a vacation home; Oceans Group International has 50 partners in the project (a 60-percent share is held by Minnesotans) and continues to welcome new investors. “There’s a whole portfolio of real-estate and equity investments here,” Haley says, citing some persuasive perks to investing in Panama. “There’s a 20-year exemption on property taxes, and if you invest with us, there are no income taxes.” The timing couldn’t be better: With competitive pricing, generous tax breaks and gorgeous geography, Panama is quickly surpassing Costa Rica as the top retirement and vacation destination for expats. And Red Frog Beach is rolling out the welcome mat. “You’ve got this hurricane-free archipelago, the best ocean and beaches in all of Panama, and so many activities,” Haley declares. “When you compare us to the nicest resorts around, we have a better product at about half or one-third of the price. It’s a great deal.”

he magic duo Penn & Teller once ran a clever experiment at Villa Piacere, a chic Los Angeles bistro. They hired a silver-tongued “water steward” to peddle several high-end still waters, including Mt. Fuji Zen Water (“known throughout the Far East for its clean and bracing flavor”) and Amazōn, with an exotic Amazonian spider in the bottle “to add to the medicinal qualities of the water.” Restaurant goers responded enthusiastically, even though the rarified waters — each florally described in a leather-bound menu — cost as much as $7 per glass. “It does taste very glacial,” said one diner. “Yeah, this one I can really tell the difference,” said another. “The Amazōn is an excellent diuretic and antitoxin,” added the connoisseur. The diners relished every sip. That is, until the water steward revealed it was all just a ploy and that he had actually filled the bottles using a garden hose. Penn & Teller’s experiment demonstrated the hypnotic power of marketing. The magicians didn’t know it, but they weren’t the only ones conducting a behavioral experiment back in 2003. That fall, a mysterious wine snob named Rudy Kurniawan made his social debut. He hosted a $4,800-per-person vertical wine tasting at Melisse in Santa Monica, California,
featuring a pair of 1921 Pétrus magnums, two of the rarest and most coveted bottles of wine in existence. Only, they weren’t. Kurniawan filled old bottles with mixes of his own invention — a little oxidized Bordeaux for an aged flavor, some Napa Cab for brightness, some Château Pichon for economy. His long con ended with his arrest in 2012; this August, Kurniawan finally was sentenced to 10 years in prison for scamming more than $30 million from wine collectors. And there have been others. This spring, a ring of seven wine forgers was arrested in Russia; investigators discovered 20 warehouses associated with the operation and more than 400 bottles of fake Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, worth at least $2.75 million if they were real. In January, reporters broke the story about The White Club, a private wine and champagne club using mostly counterfeit bottles. Julian LeCraw Jr. still has not settled his case with the Antique Wine Company; the Atlanta high roller alleges that the distributor knowingly sold him a fake bottle of 1787 Château d’Yquem for $91,400. And then there’s the original wine scammer, Hardy Rodenstock, who, in 1985 sold a bottle of Château Lafite Rothschild to Christopher Forbes for $157,000. The schemer’s cronies etched the bottle with the initials “Th.J.” to

make it appear as though it was meant for the colonial cellar of Thomas Jefferson. The cascading and accelerating scandals have put pressure on the industry. The Liv-ex Fine Wine 100 index, an industry benchmark that tracks the price of 100 fine wines, is down 64 percent (at press time) from its high in June 2011. Jancis Robinson, an influential wine critic who traditionally spent all her energy on tasting notes, now devotes a significant portion of her coverage to wine fraud. Some of the most respected voices in the industry got snake-oiled by Kurniawan: critic Neal Martin, Burghound publisher Allen Meadows and the late restaurateur Charlie Trotter. Even Robert Parker, the “emperor of wine” himself, was hoodwinked. In Minnesota, top-tier wine consultants and collectors are more vigilant than ever. Former UnitedHealth executive Bill McGuire hired New York wine consultant Kevin Swersey to manage his extensive collection in Orono — and to help ferret out fake bottles. Jadin Bragg, a wine collector and accounting executive who lives in Prior Lake, says he’s now extremely wary of buying collectible bottles. “Lately, I’ve been buying newer vintages directly from the vineyards and just laying them down to age,” he notes. “I would be extremely wary of buying an old bottle right now.” Mike Wigley, owner of Bacchus Partners in Wayzata, keeps his bottle of “1982” Pétrus on top of a cabinet, right where he can see it. “Every time I come in here, I see it up there and it reminds me how important it is to stay vigilant,” he says. Wigley paid about $2,500 for the bottle. It would have been a great deal — had it been the real thing. “Look there,” Wigley says, pointing to the cork in the bottle, through the green glass. Inked clearly on the cork is the year 1983, signifying that a counterfeiter placed a fresh label on an inferior vintage to reap the price difference. (On the current market, a bottle of 1983 Pétrus sells for $1,800, while a 1982 Pétrus sells for $6,000.) Charles Curtis, a West St. Paul native and former Christie’s head of wine for Asia, says he has several private clients who keep him on retainer. Evaluating bottles for fraud is now an important

A Recipe for Wine Fraud Wine Fraud Here’s how those who fake it make it.
Baron Philippe de Rothschild Château Mouton (1945) 2 parts 1988 Château Cos d'Estournel 1 part 1990 Château Palmer Margaux 1 part 2000 California Cabernet
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (1940s) 1 bottle 2006 Marcassin Blue Slide Ridge Pinot Noir
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (1950s) 1 bottle 1990 Labouré-Roi Gevrey-Chambertin
Château Belles-Graves, Lalande de Pomerol (1940s to 1960s) 1 bottle 2007 Duckhorn Vineyards Merlot
Obtain empty wine bottles for your desired vintage through unscrupulous sommeliers at fancy restaurants or by scouring wine auctions for important vintages with severe ullage (evaporation). Carefully uncork bottle with a two-prong cork puller. Mix selected vintages and pour into bottle. Use a wine recorking machine to seal bottle and melt wax for a new capsule. Sell for mega profit. Recipes provided — to the FBI — by wine fraudster Rudy Kurniawan.

Foiling the Fraudsters To combat criminals, winemakers are using these high-tech techniques.
Bubble Tags
A plastic gel sticker applied partly on the neck of the bottle and partly on the capsule. The sticker has a translucent square with a documented pattern of tiny bubbles. If the sticker is pulled, the bubbles are disrupted from their highly specific sequence. Wineries Onboard: Château Lafite Rothschild (2012 to present), Château Latour (2011 to present), Château Margaux (2011 to present), Chateau Montelena (2009 to present), Château Palmer (2009 to present), Domaine Ponsot (2010 to present), Hartwell Estate (2005 to present)
Embossed Bottles
An old-school technology that’s making a bit of a comeback, partly because comparatively few Châteauneuf-du-Pape or Château Haut-Brion bottles have been seen on the fake-wine market. Embossing is a fused glass technique that creates a 3-D design on the bottle’s smooth glass surface. Wineries Onboard: Château Haut-Brion (1957 to present), Chateau St Jean (1998 to present), Châteauneuf-du-Pape (1939 to present)
Laser-Etched Bottles
Design or serial number engravings on the bottle made using a laser. Wineries Onboard: Château Lafite Rothschild (1996 to present), Château Margaux (2011 to present), Château Mouton Rothschild, Penfolds (1994 to present), Pétrus (1996 to present)
RFID Chips
Scannable radio frequency identification chips embedded in the glass. The latest versions use a tiny antenna inserted in the neck of the bottle that deactivates when the wax or foil capsule is removed. Scan the RFID chip with your smartphone to find out whether the antenna is still on. Wineries Onboard: Château Le Pin (2012 to present), Harlan Estate (2004 to present), Opus One (2008 to present) aspect of his business. “I would say it’s not unreasonable to think that upward of 80 percent of certain highly collectible wines are fake,” says Curtis. “I wouldn’t be surprised if the vast majority of wine that purports to be, say, a 1921 Pétrus is fake. I would go even as far to say that likely 100 percent of all 1973 Mouton is fake.” The wine world is built on the expertise of critics and super tasters such as Parker. But if even they can be swindled by an artfully torn and tea-stained label, what then? “In any case,” says Curtis, “I would remind people that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If someone tells you they found a hidden cache of 1945 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, I would advise you to hold on to your wallet and run away very quickly.”
Security Paper
Not paper at all, but woven fabric. Wine labels now feature some of the technologies used to make paper currency, such as ultraviolet signatures, watermarks and bits of micro-text that can be seen only under magnification. Wineries Onboard: Chateau d’Yquem (1984 to present), Harlan Estate (1990 to present), Pétrus (1988 to present)

Private Eye
Give your wine a home diagnostic.
What You’ll Need: a computer, a jeweler’s loupe
(or portable microscope or high-powered magnifying glass), a critical eye
Step One: Fire up your computer. Do a Google image search for your vintage for reference.
Step Two: Using your jeweler’s loupe, examine each detail of the bottle from top to bottom. Pay attention to spelling and placement on the label. Look closely at its design. See any pixelation? If so, a home printer may have been used to manufacture the label. Step Three: If you bought the wine for drinking (and not as an investment), remove the foil or wax capsule. Using your jeweler’s loupe, look at the very top of the cork. Are there small depressions on either side? That could be a sign that the cork previously was removed with a two-pronged cork puller, a favorite device of wine fraudsters.
Step Four: Scrutinize the cork through the glass of the bottle. Ensure the vineyard and date information is correct; a 1982 vintage, for example, should have “1982” stamped on the cork. Examine the date for any signs of tampering or manipulation, such as the number 3 made to look like an 8.
Step Five: Suspect your bottle is a fake? Tell your source and try to get your money back.

The view off the sweeping porch is palm trees perfectly placed on a manicured lawn supported by a backdrop of the sparkling blue Caribbean Sea. Head concierge Kingsley Blake has been welcoming guests to Round Hill for 42 years. When he greeted me, he was sporting a bright turquoise jacket, and his warm Jamaican manner was infectious. He handed me a glass of fine rum punch and put me on notice that I was here to relax. Blake explained that Round Hill began as the dream of John Pringle, a well-connected, Jamaican-born entrepreneur. The 110-acre peninsula was home to a plantation estate and pineapple groves. In 1953, Round Hill Hotel & Villas opened as a luxury boutique cottage compound to appeal to the rich and famous who wanted a West Indies vacation home without the trouble of absentee

kitchen garden and orchard account for nearly a third of the produce served on the resort. Each Monday, the whole resort heads to the beach for lively barbecue with flowing rum punch, grilled lobsters and a steel-drum band — a night worth planning your trip around. The bar at Round Hill is as elegant as when the jet-set crowd came here in the 1950s; the old photographs that adorn the walls feature famous faces enjoying the beach and nightlife. Live entertainment from local magicians fills the atmosphere each night. There is more than enough to do on the property besides lounging at your private villa pool. Round Hill offers such activities as snorkeling, kayaking, paddleboarding, windsurfing and glass-bottom boat tours. If you want more action off-property, shopping, golf, scuba diving, white-water rafting and zip-line adventures are all within minutes of the front gate. Longtime Managing Director Josef Forstmayr has done a brilliant job preserving the special appeal of Round Hill by maintaining the best of the past without compromising what today’s world-class travelers expect. It’s no wonder guests return over and over again. Exclusive, exceptional and elite, this is a true five-star experience, but not in the way of Viceroy, Ritz-Carlton or Four Seasons. At Round Hill, the authenticity and soul shine.

“I always say you have to feel comfortable, confident and beautiful in whatever you wear.”
WHO: Monique
Lhuillier, designer
Personal style: I see my personal style as refined elegance with a twist. It matches up to my design aesthetic, which embodies modern style and relaxed femininity.
Style influences: Growing up, I was inspired by my mother, who was my true fashion icon — she had impeccable style. I have fused that elegance with Californian ease for my sense of style.
Where you shop: Paris is unquestionably my favorite city to shop. Avenue Montaigne has some of the most beautiful stores in the world. Céline and Alaia are two of my favorite stores to visit.
Trend you love: I love a layered look for fall. I mix up my knits and wools with textures; it makes any outfit more interesting.
Trend you’re over: Uggs — especially worn with more formal outfits.
Favorite item in your closet: I am looking forward to wearing pieces from my fall 2014 collection. It was inspired by a romantic dark side, Parisian opulence mixed with modern architectural moments. I reinterpreted lace for fall in a more modern and geometric way. My favorite piece is my noir/nude graphic lace long-sleeve midi dress.
Item you wear most: For fall, I am loving my midnight wool sleeveless long vest. I can pair it back to a black, cropped pant for an effortlessly elegant work look.
Favorite vintage piece: My classic Hermès Birkin forest-green bag — it goes with everything.
Go-to accessory: At the moment, I constantly wear a statement ring from Turkish jewelry designer Sevan Biçakçi. He encompasses an old-world tradition of creating art into jewelry.
Surviving a Minnesota winter in style: I always say you have to feel comfortable, confident and beautiful in whatever you wear. In harsh winter weather, it’s important to be warm, and you can do this in a fashionable and functional way without compromising style. Invest in a statement coat and keep everything underneath sleek and chic.
Best style advice you’ve received: After you get dressed before walking out the door, look in the mirror one last time and take one thing off. You should never over-accessorize!
Clients with significant income and assets often have complex financial needs. We specialize in complex. We’ll take care of the financial details. You can concentrate on your new home.

Eric Dayton has been racking up style points ever since he and his brother founded three of the Twin Cities’ most lauded destinations for food, drink and dress. The Bachelor Farmer and Marvel Bar both have been James Beard semifinalists in years past, and Askov Finlayson was named one of the best men’s stores in America by Esquire and Men’s Journal. Despite the accolades, Dayton’s style remains down-to-earth meets elegant. Mall of America Trend Specialist Sara Rogers has logged more than 25 years in the fashion industry — as a model, television host and personality, fashion consultant, and wardrobe therapist.

She’s got a thing for menswear, her Balenciaga biker jacket and an Ungaro skirt that’s been in her closet for 25-plus years. For Rogers, it’s about keeping it classic with a dash of current. As Target’s executive vice president and chief marketing officer, Jeff Jones is used to dressing the part — but he’s hardly a stuffed shirt. For work, he blends high-end suits with Target shirts; for play, he incorporates a sense of whimsy with accents like orange galoshes. Certain things, however, always will be off-limits (see: pleated pants). Greg Walsh cultivated his style first as an interior designer and then as a modern-day haberdasher. The owner of Martin Patrick 3 in Minneapolis, he has an eye for style that informs every offering at the menswear mecca. Walsh leans toward classic with a contemporary twist but can’t resist a vintage varsity jacket.
“You feel good when you look a little nicer than you have to, and it sends a strong message.”
WHO: Eric
Dayton, co-owner of Askov Finlayson
Personal style: I try to avoid describing my style, because I’m not very good at it! I just buy individual pieces that I respond to and then put them together in a way that feels right to me.
Favorite item in your closet: My 18-month-old son, Hugo, likes to go into my closet and make a mess by pulling whatever he can off hangers and shelves. It’s very hard to be angry with him because it’s so cute. So, Hugo is by far my favorite thing in my closet — even though he’s not supposed to be in there.
Favorite vintage piece: I have a beautiful, classic wool overcoat that was my dad’s, and it will never go out of style. It’s timeless.
Item you wear most: We’ve started to design and create clothing under the Askov Finlayson brand, and our very first product was the Explorer Pant. I have them in a range of colors, and they’re really the only pant I wear, whether casually or with a blazer. They’re like a favorite pair of jeans but even more versatile.
Style influences: I spent a year living in Paris during college, and that was eye-opening in terms of style — as well as food and wine.
Surviving a Minnesota winter in style: I think the key is to invest in high-quality outerwear, because you know you’re going to need it every year in Minnesota. And a good pair of leather boots.
Trend you love: I’m not sure that it’s a trend, but I’m glad to see guys dressing up again. I haven’t needed to wear a suit and tie [for years], but I often still choose to wear at least a blazer. You feel good when you look a little nicer than you have to, and it sends a strong message.
Trend you’re over: There are some things that I really value about the heritage movement — the focus on quality and American manufacturing — but I never understood dressing for the 1800s when it’s 2014. I’m glad to see that things are becoming more forward-looking now.
Best style advice you’ve received: It’s more business than fashion advice, but my grandfather’s saying from his days in retail was, “You get what you inspect, not what you expect.” I remember that every day.

“I take the European approach to shopping — quality over quantity in the core pieces.”
WHO: Sara
Rogers, Mall of America trend specialist
Personal style: I would say classic with a modern twist. I like to look trendy but in a classic way.
Item you wear most: Right now, it’s all about my Paige skinny jeans. I cuff them and wear them with my oxfords; I wear them with my motorcycle biker boots. If I had to pick a second one, it would be my Brooks Brothers white shirt, because it lights up my face. And it’s non-iron!
Favorite item in your closet: My black Balenciaga biker jacket. It’s more than 5 years old, but it’s timeless. Good leather just gets better with time.
Favorite vintage piece: My Ungaro Parallele Paris floral print skirt. I've had it for more than 25 years, and I wear it every year. As long as I fit into this skirt, I'm going to continue to wear it. It has an amazing cut and drapes beautifully — it’s truly one of my treasures.
Surviving a Minnesota winter in style: Invest in a good coat, because that gets seen more than what you’re wearing underneath. Then get really good accessories: infinity scarves, hats. And bring in color — put colors next to your face to light you up and lift your mood.
Style influences: I’ve loved the menswear look forever. One of my fashion icons is [Coco] Chanel, because she was so good about using the menswear trouser. And back in the day, I thought Katharine Hepburn was the sharpest thing when she would pair trousers with something feminine.
Trend you love: Pinstripes. You see them in the menswear look, and I’m loving that. And I love the biker jacket. You can wear it with a dress or a skirt or slip it on with jeans and a graphic tee, and it always looks chic.
Trend you’re over: I’m a little bored with color blocking and neon. And I wish they would offer more fitted tops. Right now everything is so oversize, like extreme turtlenecks. I’d just like a regular turtleneck, but that’s the classic in me.
Best style advice you’ve received: It’s what I say to people now: 80 percent of your wardrobe should be classic. Fashion is fleeting. I take the European approach to shopping — quality over quantity in the core pieces. It’s about building a wardrobe.

“Just because it’s on trend doesn’t mean it’s right for you!”
WHO: Jeff
Jones, Target executive vice president and chief marketing officer
Personal style: I’d say classic, leaning preppy for casualwear and modern for formalwear. Perhaps it’s my role at Target or having been the chief marketing officer at Gap, but I regularly blend brands high and low. In this photo, I’m wearing a Target Merona woven shirt and pocket square, a Tom Ford tie, and a blazer made by my friend David Watkins at Abbeydale.
Where you shop: Beyond Target, Gap and J.Crew, I love Martin Patrick 3 and have recently rediscovered Hubert White.
Favorite item in your closet: Shoes of all kinds: double monk straps, boots, wingtip lace-ups, horse-bit loafers, Nike trainers and Superga classic sneakers.
Item you wear most: Right now, it is a navy-blue hopsack Tom Ford blazer with brass buttons.
Go-to accessory: I’d have to say the pocket square. Finding the right size, fabric and color to accent — not match — is key.
Style influences: I can’t single out one person or event. But when I was younger, I aspired to be a fashion photographer, and no doubt the iconic images by Avedon, Weber and Lindbergh had an influence on me.
Surviving a Minnesota winter in style: Staying warm and dry has to be the No. 1 priority — I learned that the hard way my first winter in Minnesota. I now think accessories are key; scarves and gloves don’t have to be boring. Even my galoshes are orange!
Trend you love: I love pinstripe suits and look forward to wearing my camel sweaters and overcoat this fall. I like camo and neon in small amounts.
Trend you’re over: I’m not a fan of the casual trend that is extending to men’s track pants. There’s a time and a place for this item, but for me, it’s not when cotton track pants are paired with a blazer or parka! I don’t think I’m ready for floral prints again either.
Best style advice you’ve received: Just because it’s on trend doesn’t mean it’s right for you! Have a great tailor, and, oh, no pleated pants.

“I have always been drawn to either true vintage or items derived and rooted in history.”
WHO: Greg
Walsh, owner of Martin Patrick 3
Personal style: Chameleon-esque. My work drops me into a variety of situations, from Fifth Avenue in Manhattan to a construction site in Minnetonka. That forces me to adapt my style accordingly. It’s always got an underlying sense of classicism but with an updated edge — clean and simple, casual yet thoughtful in the details.
Style influences: The most consistent and influential style direction for me has always stemmed from the Brits. There’s something about both the classic and inventive natures they evoke. I have always been drawn to either true vintage or items derived and rooted in history — it permeates both the home and apparel fashions in my world.
Trend you love: Buttoned up and bespoken. The men’s apparel scene is becoming more tailored and suited. I find myself grabbing a jacket more often these days to complete a look.
Trend you’re over: It’s on its way out, but the bearded look just went too far. Certain guys can pull it off, but it wasn’t for everyone — even though many tried!
Favorite vintage piece: Watches and jackets are my two vices, so I like sporting either my father’s or grandfather’s watch, a great vintage wool Pendleton coat, or a vintage varsity jacket.
Favorite item in your closet: My new assortment of Belstaff outerwear jackets — I have four.
Item you wear most: My Jean Shop denim jeans. Once you get them broken in, they're the first go-to item.
Surviving a Minnesota winter in style: Back to the jacket vice, having a variety of stylish yet functional winter jackets helps bring a look together. Pair with a scarf to shift a look and gain some warmth.
Best style advice you’ve received: Buy it once and buy the best — you will never regret it!
