FROM THE EDITORS Hayley Saunders: We have a confession to make: Here at Artful Living, we’re self-proclaimed wellness junkies. We’re game to try the latest products and services that profess to help us in our endless self-care quest. Whether you consider yourself a fellow fanatic or, on the contrary, are part of the growing anti-wellness movement, you’ll want to read our annual style issue feature, “Inside the Big Business of Wellness” by Marisa Petrarca. It’s a deep dive into the good, the bad and the ugly of the trillion-dollar industry that’s grown massively over the past year. (page 122) Kate Nelson: Another unintended consequence of the pandemic? The dismantling of the old guard of cool. It seems the original arbiters of taste, like leading style magazines and top fashion houses, no longer dictate today’s trends. So in our digital world, who really decides what’s cool? Laura Antonia Jordan asks just that, and the answer might surprise you. (page 70) HS: We also weave our personal style into our homes. That’s on full display in our exclusive coverage of Kyle and Jordan Rudolph’s newly finished forever home here in Minnesota (page 234). Then there’s the resort-style Twin Cities abode by Hendel Homes that fully embodies the grandeur of iconic lodges out west (page 216). Finally, John Kraemer & Sons brings a couple of Artisan Home Tour goers’ dreams full circle with a light-filled Lake Minnetonka rambler (page 190). And if you’re wondering how to incorporate antiques and family heirlooms into your decor, tastemaker Chris Plantan has you covered (page 58). KN: Many of us are itching to get dressed up and go out again, like men’s style expert David Coggins, who offers tips on how to victoriously re-emerge into the real world (page 78). Whether our peacocking happens in public or at home, we’d all do well to take some pointers from the hottest fashionistas to emerge amid the pandemic: doggie influencers like Tika the Iggy and Boobie Billie (page 227). That’s right — these pooches have started outshining us with their sartorial brilliance, proving that real style is staying true to your six-pound self.

Happy reading,

THE MAGAZINE On the Cover The abstract pattern play pop art on our cover was created by German visual artist and designer Thomas Heinz. Although reminiscent of Picasso and Matisse, his style is all his own. He experiments with color, shape, scale and geometry in his playful yet striking artwork. It’s caught the eye of marketing execs at top brands like Tombolo and Warby Parker, which have tapped Heinz to create one-of-a-kind art to grace their wares and spaces. His Instagram profile (@thomasheinz9431) is filled with intriguing designs, many of them works in progress. Some are straightforward with descriptions like “four dysfunctional flowers” while others demand interpretation with more cryptic captions: “A mixture of a grid, a pattern and a labyrinth. Or a secret language.”

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU INHERIT GRANDMA’S CHINA

or her ornate settee? It’s a dreaded burden for some, but today, many consider themselves quite lucky. According to longtime H&B Gallery Manager Jonathan Campbell, this trend is hitting home for a variety of reasons. The pandemic can be partially credited for a newfound appreciation for family heirlooms. As lockdowns put the brakes on going out and we retreated to our homes, we had time to unpack some boxes. And for some, this unboxing brought joy. Campbell has noticed many design-minded individuals and younger families visiting the shop for artwork, tabletop items and statement furnishings. “We are seeing 30-somethings picking up pieces that evoke memories, items that remind them of grandparents or their childhood,” he explains. In a recent Wall Street Journal article, Deputy Fashion Director Rebecca Malinsky wrote that “so-called grandmillennials — young, design-minded people who have found beauty in old-timey furnishings, virtue in recycling, and delight in mixing and matching — are shifting attitudes surrounding such precious china. You only live once, they say. Use those beautiful plates.”

60

Artful Living

Other tastemakers note that the popular minimalist trend is the perfect pairing for more ornate heirlooms. Whether dinnerware, frames or even books, these blank canvases give context to the past. The past, in turn, acts as a beautiful nod to contemporary design. The most interesting interiors play with both. Mixing and matching, while it may seem random, is more often intentional. Consider the rich layering of textures, patterns and colors that the houses of Gucci, Etro, and Dolce & Gabbana achieve in ready-to-wear. Hand-me-downs happen. Pieces that mean something will always feel special, but sometimes they don’t fit with our style preferences. When this happens, put your own spin on things. Stack plates in a cabinet if you’re not fond of the pattern. Pair an old walnut table with a lacquer bookcase, playing with scale and material. And don’t feel intimidated by an item’s intended use. Sentimental pieces should make you feel connected to others and to your own experiences. By changing them or evolving them into something new, like artwork, you’re adding a piece of yourself to the story — making it that much richer when it’s your turn to pass it on.

AT AU C T I O N

WHEN THE STATUESQUE FASHION DESIGNER

L’Wren Scott took her own life in March 2014 at the age of 49, the fashion world was in shock. Her sleek, timeless creations were favorites of the Hollywood set, including Nicole Kidman and Penélope Cruz. The former model seemed to understand glamour from the inside out, creating elegant, deceptively simple gowns that concealed their meticulous construction. Recently, fashionistas got to see some of her creations up close when Christie’s London auctioned off 55 of her most iconic gowns. The sale was dotted with the long, lean silhouettes for which Scott became famous as well as elaborate stage costumes and even designs she wore herself. The auction took in £366,625, shattering estimates and drawing interest from bidders across the globe. Garnering special attention were two highly detailed stage jackets she designed for longtime partner Mick Jagger, who along with Scott’s family brought the entire collection to auction. The Rolling Stones rocker donned the oak leaf “glamouflage” jacket for a 2013 Glastonbury performance and wore the butterfly jacket at a Hyde Park concert that same year. “These jackets had to be comfortable and had to withstand Jagger’s famously athletic performances, so additional seams and strengthening elements were included inside,” explains Christie’s London Private & Iconic Collections Head of Sale Caitlin Yates. Amid fierce bidding, the jackets sold for double their estimates, fetching £62,500 and £60,000 respectively. Perhaps the most eye-catching design on the auction block was a couture kimono tailcoat Scott created for herself. Complete with scarlet lining, the elongated back featured a profusion of embroidered wisteria vines. Scott wore the ensemble to the 2013 British Fashion Awards, where she turned heads on the red carpet. “What might surprise people about her is that she was making clothing by the age of 12, as she was already over six feet tall and couldn’t find pieces to fit her,” Yates notes. The ensemble sold for £32,500, more than 10 times the estimate. As it turned out, one of the most sought-after designs in the sale was

also one of the most understated: a nude sequin sheath dress from Scott’s Under My Skin collection. Nicole Kidman wore the figure-hugging frock for the premiere of Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus at the 2006 Rome International Film Festival. It took in £8,125, eight times the estimate. But the biggest surprise of the auction was a 1940s-style dinner dress with pink sequins worn by Madonna. It sold for £62,500 — more than 78 times the estimate. All proceeds from the sale supported the L’Wren Scott Fashion Scholarship at Central Saint Martins in London, with a mission of inspiring the next generation of fashion designers.

A QUICK LITMUS TEST TO DETERMINE HOW

cool you are: Where do you part your hair? If it’s on the side, bad news. Earlier this year, Gen Z TikTokers declared the side part over and the center part where it’s at. And if you swear by skinny jeans, profess a fondness for coffee or liberally use the laughing crying emoji, it gets worse: They’re also over. As a geriatric millennial (the unfortunate term given to the micro generation born in the early 1980s) not using TikTok myself — and not entirely sure exactly what it is — I had to be informed of this news by younger, more digitally fluent acquaintances. Just take solace in knowing that Generation Alpha will eventually inform the Zers how mortifyingly middleaged they are. Cool as a concept is complicated. While easy to spot, it’s hard to define. It runs the risk of eating itself. For something to be cool, it must be desirable and popular but not everywhere (ubiquity is the enemy of cool). The shelf life of hotness these days is alarmingly quick. It’s nuanced and arbitrarily anointed — it could be new, it could be nostalgic — and what is the height of hipness to some is irrelevant to others. Some things are so desperately uncool that they double down on irony and become very cool (see: Crocs, once a prospect more terrifying than their reptilian counterpart and now, against all odds, a top trend). Like I said, it’s complicated. But who decides what’s cool now? The glaringly obvious place to look is youth culture. Although the sands of style are forever shifting, it’s the younger generation that continually sets the agenda. Just as they catapulted miniskirts and bell bottoms to popularity during the 1960s youthquake and made grunge happen in the 1990s, the baton has now been handed to Gen Z to shape the cultural zeitgeist. What separates this pack from their predecessors, however, is that they’ve grown up online. Social media has created a democracy of cool, with algorithms and swipes granting free access to a world of trends. “Because everybody gets a chance to share what they like, the masses decide what’s cool now,” explains Camille Charrière, the writer, tastemaker and fashion influencer with a whopping 1.1 million Instagram followers. “It used to trickle from the top down, but now it’s the opposite.” Designer Harris Reed, whose duchesse satin ball skirt Harry Styles donned for his 2020 Vogue cover story, agrees. “I think what defines cool now is what everyone in the collective Internet universe is wearing, especially with everyone dressing up at home, posting their outfits of the day and playing with their identity,” he notes. “It’s this Internet generation that I find really interesting and inspiring as a designer myself.” Digital dominance has effectively diminished the power of the old guard. “For generations, fashion magazines were the arbiters of cool,” says New York Times international styles correspondent Elizabeth Paton. “That power has been eroded by the relentless march of influencers and the ubiquity of access brought about by the digital age. Anything can be accessed anytime, anywhere.” Although that’s helped propel the growth of subcultures, it’s also led to “an even greater explosion in trend homogeneity,” she adds.

But what about the big-league fashion houses that were once the unimpeachable dictators of the dernier cri? If they play it right, they still have serious sway. Take Gucci, which topped the Lyst Index, the global fashion search platform’s compilation of the hottest brands and products, for Q1 of 2021. One reason the brand remains cool is that it’s constantly evolving, which bestows it with something priceless: relevancy. To wit: Gucci has launched canny collaborations (Balenciaga, the North Face). It’s tapped into nostalgia by reissuing designs from Tom Ford’s tenure. It’s harnessed the power of the digital sphere, even releasing virtual sneakers with AR platform Wanna. It’s stepped away from the rigid catwalk calendar and aligned itself with inspiring ambassadors, like trailblazing septuagenarian model and activist Bethann Hardison. Gucci is coupling luxury with an indie spirit — and it’s working. So you know where to look, but how can you be cool? We find an unlikely answer in celebrities. A new wave of cultural pioneers is broadening the notions of what influence looks like. Right now, cool is dependent on what you have to say, not what you’re wearing. According to data crunched by Lyst, Amanda Gorman, Harry Styles, Billie Eilish and Lil Nas X are among those currently setting the agenda. Case in point: Demand for red headbands increased 560% after Gorman donned a Prada one for the presidential inauguration. And page views for feather boas shot up 1,500% in the 48 hours after Styles wore three Gucci ones to the Grammys this spring. All of them are champions of self-expression. Their cool is rooted in the fact that they aren’t trying to be anyone but themselves. But this irresistible allure of individuality is timeless. Consider, for instance, how 20-somethings have just “discovered” David Bowie and Princess Diana and now pore over archival images for inspiration. And on Cher’s 75th birthday in May, Instagram was flooded with images of her in all her resplendent, campy, not-for-anyone-butme glory. Some of those looks were mocked when she first wore them. Today, they’re seen as totems of glamorous originality (just one reason why worst dressed lists feel like a relic of a lesser time). Cher’s triumph is having fun with clothes. And that’s something we’re seeking in our fashion idols: levity, be it Marc Jacobs in platforms and nail polish or Tracee Ellis Ross owning every red carpet she sets foot on in pure fantasy couture. We’re increasingly drawn to people who take the things that matter seriously, but don’t take themselves too seriously. It’s why Dolly Parton — always an icon, now also a COVID-era hero thanks to her $1-million donation for vaccine research — is bestowed with a cool crown that will never be toppled by trends. To be cool in 2021 is to be kind. It’s to connect, to go back to IRL life and, ironically, to realize that cool means both nothing and whatever you want it to be. Because as soon as you understand that style means nothing without substance, well, that’s the coolest thing of all. Discover our list of the new fashion icons on our website.

Artful Living

AS FALL ARRIVES, WE’RE LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING LOVED ONES AND

raising a glass. Do we want to abandon our dignity and return to public in slouchy, formless leisurewear? No, we do not! We want to reconnect with our adoring public in style. Formality, which for more than a year has been a stranger, can now be a friend. Even more so if you make it personal. Dressing up can be — and really should be — as expressive as everything else you wear. So how do we do it well and in a way that suits our personality? Well that’s the trick, isn’t it?

1 | Don a Bold Patterned Jacket If you’ve never worn a houndstooth or herringbone jacket, you might find them visually raucous at first sight. I beg you to reconsider. The first sip of Scotch can be a little fiery, too, then it mellows out. There’s a reason Ralph Lauren and Drake’s make coats like these every season: because they look good every season. If you’re feeling shy, stay away from contrasting colors and instead try a cream and tan Prince of Wales jacket or something with warm grays and greens. The pattern is doing the hard work, so the rest of your ensemble can rest easy. A blue oxford, olive cords and a winning knit tie, and you’re playing your A-game.

2 | Think About Counterpoint Dressing up is about pleasure, so let’s communicate pleasure. The right amount of contrast can be very powerful. If you have a tastefully understated cashmere sports coat, let’s add a bold crimson silk scarf. Now people will think you’ve been spending your time in an esteemed arts residency polishing your memoir. Maybe some suede shoes that are a little lighter brown than you usually wear, which play very well with everything from denim to corduroy. What about a roll neck sweater in an autumnal yellow or orange? Remember: If it’s worn under a dark sports coat, then it’s not too loud at all. You just look like you have a very interesting art collection.

3 | Embrace the Chalk Stripe Let’s accept the fact that men look good in well-tailored suits. That shouldn’t be hard to do, because it’s true. Gray flannel is classic and a good place to start. But let’s get a little ambitious and add a soft light gray stripe. In a practical way, this elongates the figure. It shows you’re in the business of embracing the occasion. It doesn’t need too much contrast, which gets you into Al Capone henchman territory. But a midnight blue with an easy light blue chalk stripe is wonderful. I would visit a Sid Mashburn store if you’re near one (or his very good website if you’re not). And if you’re in New York City, try the Armoury or Paul Stuart. You deserve a good suit with a little more distinction than usual.

4 | Follow the Velvet Muse Imagine you’re at the opera or a rarefied dinner party. You see a man wearing an emerald green velvet dinner jacket. At first you think, Is that allowed? When you realize it is, you wonder, Can I be the man who wears a velvet jacket out and about? Answer: Yes, sir! When you dress up, you set the terms of engagement, and other men look to you as the benchmark of what’s possible. You raise the stakes in the best way possible. A velvet jacket can be worn with a white dress shirt and a solid tie, even with black jeans (though I would opt for gray flannels). You can usually find one in an appealing ruby tone or even black on Mr Porter. You know this strategy is working when the hostess comes up to you, rubs your arm and says, “Is that velvet? I thought so.”

5 | Consider a New Color We all get into habits, and they can be perfectly reassuring. But sometimes we need to move a few degrees in a new direction. As in all new ventures, it takes a little getting used to. But after a week of wearing moss green cords or a nutmeg sweater, you won’t believe you ever lived without them. The burgundy family is good, as is its sibling, aubergine. Warmer greens and browns, from almond to chocolate, can expand your palette in a winning way. We feel more alive when we reflect a world full of color. As we reconnect with society, let’s do so with verve and a sense of style. A Minnesotan turned New Yorker, David Coggins is the author of the New York Times bestseller Men and Style and writes a style column for Artful Living.

in the 16th century, they too were enchanted by the particular vibrance of the pleochroic stones, which display different colors when observed from different angles. Ever since, royalty and celebrities alike have gravitated toward the gem, perhaps most famously on display in Dame Elizabeth Taylor’s spectacular collection. When she married Richard Burton in 1964, she paired a yellow chiffon dress with a dazzling 18-carat Colombian emerald, which would later set the world auction record for an emerald when it sold for $6,578,500 in 2011. Today, the price of rare emeralds is starting to soar, making them particularly desirable to collectors. Wixon notes that because emeralds are delicate and require a specialist’s touch to maximize their brilliance, working with an expert gemologist is crucial to ensure you achieve lasting value with your investment. “When it comes to wearing emeralds, strive for as big and luscious of a center stone as possible,” she advises. “Most importantly, ask yourself if the gem speaks to you. Color is linked to emotion. Special colored gemstones like emeralds become instant family heirlooms. Stepping up the quality and size of your gem is a decision you’ll never regret. These glowing green beauties are sure to be loved for generations to come.”

on display at Wixon Jewelers, with each gemstone seemingly more vivid and brilliant than the last. Shamrock green Zambian emerald earrings glow in a halo of glittery diamonds. A striking vintage seven-carat ring, meanwhile, evokes misty Colombian rainforests. When I ask expert gemologist and store owner Hope Wixon why emeralds have such a seemingly emotional appeal, she confirms my experience: “There are no two emeralds that look exactly alike or that feel the same to every eye,” she explains. “When I think of emeralds, I think of spring. Natural emeralds feature tiny inclusions called jardins, reminiscent of little mossy specks of soil from a garden. Everything about the gem symbolizes life, growth and resurgence.” These captivating green stones have a truly timeless appeal. The first known emerald mines in Egypt — dating back to at least 330 BC — inspired Cleopatra’s famous obsession. In fact, both the ancient Egyptians and Romans believed that simply looking at emeralds was restorative, so much so that Rome’s Pliny the Elder wrote that there was “no better method of restoring eyes than looking at the emerald, its soft green color comforting and removing their weariness.” When Spanish conquistadors landed in Colombia

Lisa Loushin Kroskin’s

FAVORITE THINGS THE DESIGNER’S PICKS EMBODY HER TWO WORLDS: EAST MEETS MIDWEST. BY CHRIS LEE

IT’S NOT SURPRISING THAT LISA LOUSHIN KROSKIN, OWNER OF HAUTE KITCHENS

and Interiors, is best known as a kitchen designer. She loves space planning and making the most of every inch, plus she’s an accomplished cook. And now that most kitchens are open to other spaces, her business has naturally evolved to encompass the rest of the house, too. Her affinity for kitchens began early in her life’s journey from Seoul, South Korea, where she spent the first 10 years of her life, to Babbitt, Minnesota, where she spent the next 10. Her Korean childhood ended suddenly and tragically when she lost both parents to cancer. She and three of her five siblings (aged two to 18) were adopted and — speaking no English — began the transformation to landlocked Minnesotans. She recalls the shock of switching from flavorful, colorful Korean cuisine to oft bland Iron Range/Scandinavian fare. “Our diet was white on white, and seasoning was optional,” she says wryly. “As I got older, I figured out I needed to learn to cook.” Loushin Kroskin wasn’t set on a design career. In fact, isolated in northern Minnesota, she had never heard the term “interior designer.” But her mother, observing her penchant for redecorating her room and rearranging furniture, encouraged her to consider the field. It was a perfect fit, and she’s been practicing her craft for more than 30 years (the past 14 as a mostly solo act). Along the way, Loushin Kroskin realized her background helped shape her adaptability. “Which, as a designer, translates into adapting for my clients,” she notes. Her unique East-meets-Midwest experience also informs her favorites.

1 | Space to Design “The kitchen, by far!” she exclaims. “Cooking is how I decompress at the end of a busy day.” She passed this passion on to her children, and when her grown sons visit from Duluth, they make meals together. Designing beautiful kitchens makes the most of her talents. “If you’re a cook — or even if you aren’t — you need the space to function really well,” she adds. She also loves the hard materials that go into the hearth of the home: cabinetry, fixtures, hardware, stone and tile.

One of her favorites is French artist Denis Lebecq, whom she and her husband discovered in a Carmel, California, gallery as they drove the Big Sur coastline.

3 | Style Her personal style is Scandinavian/Asian fusion. “It’s an actual style, not something I just made up,” she laughs. The emphasis is on simplicity of line and lack of pretense. “With my Asian and Scandinavian background, it just works naturally. I love tone-ontone neutrals with a pop of color or texture.” As for her design work, she doesn’t have one style preference she pushes. Instead, she curates a unique style that reflects each client’s story. She recently started creating a Haute Design Box, which includes samples, photos and sketches for clients.

4 | Furnishing

4

“I have a collection of tables: sofa tables, coffee tables, end tables,” she notes. “They come in all different styles, from modern to midcentury to Asian. I love each of them for their individual use and purpose because I’m a very practical person, but at the same time, they all bring me joy.”

5 | Accessory As versatile as they are beautiful, ginger jars can be the traditional blue-and-white or come in countless colors and patterns. They can be used as storage vessels, vases or objets d’art. And they work well solo or grouped together in traditional, modern or farmhouse settings.

5

6 | Destination Anywhere near water. She grew up summering on Lake Vermilion and now spends her free time in Duluth with her family. “I love just floating on the lake — surrounded by tall pines, hearing the loons, soaking up the quietness of it all,” she gushes. “The ocean is constantly calling me as well. I love the East Coast and the never-ending expanses of beach and blue water. I feel at home.”

7 | Textile Buffalo plaid fleece. “Here’s where my two worlds collide,” Loushin Kroskin explains. “It’s an homage to where I grew up. Buffalo plaid mentally and physically gives me warmth and reminds me of northern Minnesota.”

Choosing an architect

is like choosing a mate. It should be about more than looks.

General contractor: L. Cramer Builders

But...oh hi there Gorgeous! Like you, we love houses that are head turners. But the less apparent distinction of a TEA2 home is the way its beauty continues to unfold, season after season, decade after decade. That requires careful consideration of every view, every path of the sun, all year long. It means finding the ideal balance between openness and intimacy. Complementing the landscape perfectly. Attending to details many would overlook. You’ll be surprised how incredibly thoughtful, thorough and collaborative we are. It’s not about a specific style; we design modern and traditional homes, stately and modest, with equal enthusiasm. Our unique approach works—as demonstrated by the clients who’ve asked us to create second and third houses. Want a home that inspires delight, well after it’s no longer the fresh face on the block? WELLNESS

COMPASS

OVER THE PAST YEAR, I’VE ADOPTED WHAT YOU

might call a Zen lifestyle. With pandemic-related anxiety infiltrating all aspects of my life, I found myself seeking out natural ways to care for my body and mind. For me, that means regular exercise, clean eating and the Wim Hof Method (a breathwork and cold exposure practice). So when Wild Rice Retreat, a secluded wellness destination on the shores of Lake Superior in Bayfield, Wisconsin, opened its doors this summer, I knew I had to experience its healing powers. Although I’ve never been on a wellness retreat before, I’m familiar with the concept (thanks, Gwyneth Paltrow). Wild Rice’s laid-back, personalized approach lets guests curate their individual experience, with an emphasis on movement, nourishment and creative expression. The overall goal here is clear: to ground the mind, body and spirit through integrative and holistic practices. When I walked into my RicePod, I immediately felt an overwhelming sense of calm. In addition to seven RicePods set across the 100-acre property, Wild Rice also offers eight private king Nests and four Treehauses, each with four private suites. All boast huge windows, natural wood plank walls, minimalist furnishings and soft textures, making for comfortable accommodations that serve as the center of your stay. The destination pays homage to its predecessor, Mary Rice’s famed James Beard–nominated restaurant, and features stunning structures designed by Duluth architect David Salmela. With no screens of any kind in guest quarters, there was no pressure to be “on” during my stay. After all, I was here to recharge. I plopped down on the bed, took a few deep breaths and thought to myself, Now I can unwind. And boy did I unwind. I was able to hit pause on life for a weekend and slept better than I had in months on the plushy cloud of a bed. I found peace in my afternoons alone, able to read a book for hours and quietly reflect on where life has taken me. I ventured out to the Brownstone Trail that runs behind the property along Lake Superior to downtown Bayfield. I immersed myself in the luxury of slowing down with some yoga sessions. Come evenings, I relaxed at the Sanctuary, hopping back and forth between the heat of the Sauna Haus and the cold of the Rain Room. It felt like a physical cleanse of the stress and toxins that had been built up in my body for a long time. It was a treat to dine at NOVO, where I had the best food I’ve ever tasted. Chef Dustin Thompson (or Food Wizard, as I like to call him) was able to accommodate my dietary preferences, delivering creative and delicious fare. I noshed on dishes like crispy, springdug sunchokes with black garlic aioli; nettle and cashew agnolotti with wood-roasted mushrooms, peas and nasturtium; and rice pudding with blackberries, coconut shavings and maple syrup. My escape to Wild Rice helped me find my center again. The destination’s back-to-basics approach might seem simple, but it’s a far cry from our everyday lives. My wellness retreat allowed me to reconnect with nature and purpose so I could return to my life in Minneapolis with a full cup, ready to be my best, most authentic self, both for my loved ones and for myself.

fancy and friendly, Healdsburg, California, exudes an idyllic laid-back luxury. Like Napa, Sonoma is known for chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon, along with world-class pinot noir and zinfandel. Situated at the nexus of Sonoma’s Alexander Valley, Russian River Valley and Dry Creek Valley AVAs, Healdsburg is flush with wine tasting opportunities, both in downtown tasting rooms and surrounding vineyards, where you can taste ripe grapes straight from the vine during fall harvest. –A M B E R G I B S O N PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY CHRISTIAN HORAN, JORDAN WINERY AND MICHAEL WOOLSEY

MONTAGE HEALDSBURG

The most significant hotel opening in Sonoma in nearly two decades, Montage Healdsburg is the area’s largest luxury resort, comprising 130 bungalow-style guest rooms and suites sprawled across 258 acres. Floor-to-ceiling windows and furnished terraces with outdoor fire pits and daybeds immerse you in nature. Local ingredients, including honey from the resort apiary, are incorporated into dishes at signature restaurant Hazel Hill and extravagant treatments at Spa Montage. Naturally, the resort has its own vineyards, managed by winemaker Jesse Katz of Aperture Cellars, whose wine you’ll find stocked in the minibar. There are separate pools for adults and families, along with Montage’s beloved Paintbox children’s program to occupy little ones with crafts and scavenger hunts while Mom and Dad are wine tasting. Complimentary activities range from beekeeping to yoga in the vineyards to happy hour with a local winemaker. Private residences are for sale, too, hidden among the majestic oaks.

THE MATHESON

Acclaimed local chef Dustin Valette just opened his second restaurant, the Matheson, on Healdsburg Plaza. The ambitious tri-level project features modern fine dining on the main level and a casual rooftop lounge with shared plates, wood-fired flatbreads and cocktails. A fifth generation Healdsburg native, Valette celebrates Sonoma’s freshest and most flavorful ingredients, drawing on his deep relationships with local farmers, ranchers and producers. The kitchen team is made up of several veterans from his first eatery. Menu highlights include lamb loin with smoked shallot fondue, local line-caught halibut with olive oil snow, and housemade whipped cheese curd with pickled green strawberries. There’s even sushi by acclaimed chef Ken Tominaga of Pabu. The wine wall boasts an impressive selection of 80+ self-service wines on tap from boutique and allocated winemakers, and the wine list specializes in Sonoma’s best bottles, including from the chef’s own Valette Wines.

JORDAN

One of Sonoma’s most iconic wineries, Jordan produces just two wines — Russian River Valley chardonnay and Alexander Valley cabernet sauvignon — stunningly well. Winemaker Maggie Kruse continues the brand’s long-standing tradition of Old World elegance, reflected in her sophisticated but quaffable food-friendly wines. Book the chateau block vineyard tasting to enjoy three vintages of cabernet sauvignon paired with local salumi from Journeyman Meat Co., or opt for a four-mile vineyard hike, exploring the gardens, vineyards and pollinator sanctuaries (planted with milkweed and purple owl’s clover to support endangered butterflies), followed by a picnic lunch with wine pairings. During the pandemic, Jordan remodeled its tasting spaces, accommodations and gardens. In the guest suites, for instance, rare Louis XV and Louis XVI armoires now house wet bars and vinyl record player entertainment systems. The only way to score an overnight stay is to join Jordan’s loyalty program and buy ample vino.

PIPPIN HILL

Upon arrival at Pippin Hill’s bucolic estate, it’s clear why this is among the most in-demand wedding venues in Charlottesville. Even an ordinary day feels like cause for celebration when you’re welcomed like an old friend with a crisp glass of traditional-method sparkling wine. The tasting room experience is elevated by food pairings from chef Ian Rynecki, with many of the fresh herbs and vegetables grown in the meticulously planted kitchen garden just beyond the reserve room. Wine and food are intrinsically connected here through terroir, nourished by Virginia’s Precambrian granite soils. Pippin Hills makes just 10,000 cases of wine each year, encompassing a dozen varieties, but viognier and still rosé are the standouts. With the 2021 production, the team has also begun creating a new line of premium wines that will be released after three years of careful barrel aging.

With pink as its predominant color and a delicate feminine touch throughout, Quirk could easily veer into teenybopper territory. But Virginia art patrons Ted and Katie Ukrop keep it classy and modern with minimalist design accented by thoughtful works of art at this 80-room boutique downtown property. As the name suggests, everything about this hotel is a little quirky, from the surprisingly sweet avocado toast served with tomato jam to the one-of-a-kind Flora Suite located in a 19th century brick farmhouse. A bi-level contemporary gallery just off the lobby features rotating exhibitions from regional and national artists, along with trunk shows and workshops. This culinary cornerstone opened in 1997, recreating an authentic French bistro experience inspired by Oregon’s agricultural bounty. Marché founding chef Stephanie Kimmel lived in France and studied at the Sorbonne before bringing her European approach to seasonal, ingredient-driven fare to the Pacific Northwest. She is Eugene’s doyenne of dining, and many of the city’s best young chefs (including the duo behind Lion & Owl) trained in her kitchen. Request a patio table for alfresco dining that feels effortlessly chic. Inside, booths offer privacy and walls are adorned with vintage French memorabilia and sketches of fruits and vegetables. Parisian classics like steak tartare and crème brûlée are menu mainstays, while seasonal flourishes like nettle crepes with morel mushrooms, peas and asparagus or pan-roasted wild-caught spring run salmon are fleeting treasures. Many of the staff members have been here for decades, growing into a cherished family.

KING ESTATE

King Estate is among the state’s biggest and best wineries, an ambassador for Oregon wine with distribution across all 50 states. It’s famous for pinot gris but also makes excellent pinot noir and Champagne-method sparkling wine. The mossy wildflower aroma of the barrel-aged Paradox defies expectations. And the tasting experience here is magnificent, accompanied by charcuterie, estate honey and vegetable crudités from the greenhouse. Winemaker and COO Brent Stone has a master’s degree in food science and marries a scientific approach — including careful analysis of each wine in a quality-control lab — with responsible land stewardship. With more than 1,000 Demeter-certified acres, King Estate is the largest biodynamic vineyard in North America. Native oak woodlands, marshes, fruit orchards and beds of lavender diversify the estate. You may even spot sheep grazing between the vines; their compost helps maintain healthy soil without synthetic fertilizers.

Artful Living

The wellness industry’s growth didn’t happen overnight; it’s steadily garnered interest year after year. But 2020 sped up demand. The coronavirus pandemic turned the page to a never-before-seen chapter, one that pushed both healthcare and self-care — two sides of the same coin — to the forefront of our minds and our daily conversations. So has the super-saturated market helped us get well? In a word: Maybe. Luxe leggings and LED face masks won’t make it happen on their own, though. Wellness, after all, transcends all the stuff we can buy. It’s about making positive lifestyle choices and not overindulging in not-so-great ones, like energy drinks as a substitute for sleep. Today’s definition of self-care actually isn’t all that different than in decades past. Just look to the father of wellness, Halbert L. Dunn, MD, who laid the foundation for the modern-day movement. Back in the 1950s, he introduced the concept as “a condition of change in which the individual moves forward, climbing toward a higher potential of functioning.” Seems simple enough, right? Wellness went mainstream in the 21st century, having been largely viewed as a fringe woo-woo fad up until that point thanks to its ancient and spiritual origins. Once solely synonymous with centuries-old disciplines (think Ayurveda and homeopathy), it transitioned from niche to normal as we sought out new ways to take control of our health. Fast-forward to today: The big business of wellness is thriving, but it’s riddled with flaws. Although there are devotees aplenty, skeptics say it’s a bubble that’s about to burst. That it’s diet culture in disguise. That it’s not inclusive, nor diverse. That companies are stamping “wellness” onto all kinds of items for profit. In fact, there’s even an entire anti-wellness movement calling for an overhaul of the industry and a reframing of how we approach well-being. So what does wellness look like when you pull apart its thousand-piece puzzle? And is the trillion-dollar market really helping us get well? Or is it actually doing more harm than good?

The Return to Basics Wellness is more enticing when it’s shrouded in glamour: healthy food reminiscent of art, upscale spas fit for royalty, fitness studios featuring state-of-theart equipment — the list goes on and on. But when the pandemic put many of these luxuries on pause, we were jetted back to a less seductive reality. Now, we find ourselves at a turning point thanks to a renewed appreciation for the fundamentals of wellness. Perhaps the most digestible example of this phenomenon is, curiously, avocado toast. In February, Dunkin’ introduced its version of Gwyneth Paltrow’s beloved breakfast staple for a mere $2.99 a slice. Fare once synonymous with bougie wellness, its fast-food successor signified a loss of grandeur. In retrospect, though, avocado toast had very little business cameoing as a wellness spectacle. Rather, it was the epitome of Instagram fodder, a way of telling

social media followers, I’m trendy, and I care about my body! In the wake of a global health crisis, though, performative wellness has been replaced with real regimens. To deal with the temporary loss of Bikram yoga and Swedish massages, people took wellness into their own hands. A daily neighborhood walk, a healthy home-cooked meal and a good night’s sleep took priority over posh treatments and regal rituals. People found solace in a phone call with a loved one and pastimes like bread baking and gardening. But let’s be honest: This newfound perspective certainly didn’t mark the end of expensive self-care luxuries. The #TreatYourself anthem isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. It seems our spending has simply shifted, and these days we’re shelling out cash for personalized goods tailored to meet our unique needs. To wit: Last year, the U.S. demand for personalized supplements increased 35% to $375 million, according to the Nutrition Business Journal. “People are realizing that their body isn’t like their neighbor’s and that they can’t simply grab the same vitamins off the shelf,” says Persona Nutrition Interim CEO Shawn Bushouse. “They’re also becoming smarter about what they put into their body, which is driving interest in personalized nutrition.” This reasoning also explains why services like Everlywell’s at-home health tests have been trending. The brand’s chronic disease management and women’s health offerings saw a whopping 300% boost in 2020, proving that even lab testing has gotten a DIY makeover. In short: Despite our desire to get back to the basics of wellness, we won’t renounce spending entirely — especially if it promises a personalized road map to health.

The Digital Revolution Remember crowded fitness studios? Crammed spin classes? In-your-face instructors? The very thought is unnerving for those of us who have wholeheartedly embraced the digital wellness revolution. When gyms closed, we justified splurging on tech-driven fitness, making room in our homes for Peloton bikes and trying out newer devices like social media darling Mirror, which has seen sales more than double throughout the pandemic (to the tune of $150 million in Q3 2020 alone). Plus plenty of us turned to our screens to get our sweat on. Fitness and wellness booking resource Mindbody saw a 68% increase in users tuning into live-streamed workout sessions compared with pre-pandemic stats. And innovations transcend our fitness routine. Words like “telehealth” and “telecounseling” have started dominating our vernacular. Virtual healthcare models such as Teladoc and PlushCare allow for more convenient, more affordable and just plain easier access to healthcare. Last year, nearly half of U.S. patients opted for telehealth appointments instead of in-person ones, according to consulting firm McKinsey & Company. Even as the world returns to some semblance of normalcy, the digital revolution rages on, offering ample — not to mention free or low-cost — benefits across all facets of wellness. Virtual appointments, online classes and smartphone apps have made educational resources and support services more accessible for all. And people are putting them to good use. Consider Yale’s popular online course, The Science of Well-Being. It’s amassed 3.5 million sign-ups and counting since its inception in 2018 — a million of which emerged during the height of the pandemic. Mental health apps like Calm, Headspace and Meditopia jumped 24%, surging by two million more downloads than expected in April 2020. And Exhale, a firstof-its-kind emotional well-being app designed by and for BIWOC, paves the way for people of color to access specially tailored resources. As the stats show, wellness and technology have become irrevocably intertwined, and only time will tell if we’re willing to go back to our IRL ways. But as industry-altering innovations move beyond the Zoom era, companies will need to be uber strategic to win over our time, attention and dollars. Having spent so much of the past 18 months engrossed in our devices, we need something unlike what we’ve seen before.

The Trend Report Wellness sells — and it’s not cheap. When CBD stormed onto the scene, it became an industry mainstay, valued at $2.8 billion in 2020. Now, it’s everywhere. There are cannabidiol-infused gummies, moisturizers, bath bombs — you name it. Hell, even Martha Stewart has jumped

on the bandwagon with her own line (Canopy, if you’re so inclined). This highlights the fact that we’re desperate for anything that might make our lives more livable. Amid an unprecedented health crisis, the wellness sector’s rumored benefits permeated the public consciousness. Google searches for “self-care” reached an all-time high last May. And the slew of trends that followed will define the times: gallon-sized water bottles, fancy air purifiers, jade facial rollers, stress-relief gummies and mushroombased everything. But not every craze sticks or ages well. Remember, for instance, the teatoxes and appetite suppressant lollipops that dominated social media in 2018? Other trends like plant-based eating and microbiome skincare — sectors rich with research and interest — have earned more permanent places in the market. One of the buzziest products of the moment is Sakara’s Detox Water Drops chlorophyll supplement. In May, sales doubled overnight. The reason? TikTok. People took to the social media platform in droves to rave about the product’s supposed do-it-all benefits: weight loss, clearer skin, improved digestion and the like. At the time of writing, it’s unavailable yet again, with only an option to sign up for the waitlist. Another trend earning global attention? Wellness tourism — think yoga retreats, boot camps, staycations and other trips promoting healthy lifestyles. In fact, this sector is growing faster than standard tourism, according to the Global Wellness Institute. Devil’s advocates argue that habits adopted while on vacation aren’t sustainable. But Forbes wellness writer Noma Nazish disagrees: “A brief stay at a wellness retreat may not be a miracle cure, but it’s a great way to break away from the daily grind and focus on your physical, mental and emotional needs that often get put on the back burner,” she explains. “This can leave you feeling motivated to cultivate those healthy habits even when you return home.” Whether forever or flash in the pan, there’s no denying the immense power of wellness trends — and the big bucks they bring in. That profit is only increasing, no matter the length of a fad’s lifespan.

The Accountability Factor We’ve seen the claims: Detox your body. Reduce your anxiety. Boost your immune system. Countless goods promise quick fixes. But investing in unproven products is a gamble. The road to getting well is woefully riddled with deception, yet the wellness industry is profiting all the same. The demand for accountability is alarmingly dire, and — without getting overly political here — the problem starts at the top. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration and the Federal Trade Commission are tasked with ensuring products are safe and live up to their claims. Unfortunately, these agencies’ regulatory power is stymied by red tape. The result? All too often, products with questionable claims and ingredients still end up on the marketplace — and, in turn, in thousands of virtual shopping carts.

Autumn 2021

FEATURE

Take, for example, Gwyneth Paltrow’s multimilliondollar empire, Goop. Perhaps the most notable — and controversial — wellness brand of our time, it’s no stranger to false advertising lawsuits. In 2018, the company paid out $145,000 for unfounded claims that its vaginal jade eggs could restore hormonal balance and regulate menstrual cycles. Despite this, Goop has sold thousands of them and they’re still available for purchase today (minus the jargon that got the brand in hot water). Mystery piques curiosity, even in the case of vaginal jade eggs. It’s one reason wellness wares sell without strict regulations, which is part of the problem. “The more simple human needs are being complicated by the health and wellness sector, the more people are getting confused and looking for answers in the wrong places,” says Global Wellness Day founder Belgin Aksoy. This is tragically true for those living with chronic diseases or mental or physical disabilities. Not only are their actual needs regularly ignored by the industry, but they’re also often victims of marketing ploys. Brands sell them false promises under the guise of sound advice — “Have you tried a gluten-free diet? Pilates? Celery juice?” — which is not only deceitful but verges on dangerous. Accountability goes far beyond the need for safe ingredients and regulated claims. Not only do we deserve transparency, we also deserve to feel fully represented. As we’ve seen over the past 18 months, the wellness industry has a diversity and inclusion problem. And these days, action is essential to earn our trust; black squares on Instagram and empty promises to do better won’t cut it. To that end, UOMA Beauty’s Sharon Chuter last summer launched the #PullUpOrShutUp campaign to pressure beauty and wellness companies to release data about the number of people of color on staff. Today, the Instagram account @PullUpForChange remains active, sharing updates about brands’ progress. Alas, there remains a lot of work to be done. But we, the consumers, have the power to hold companies accountable. It’s time to educate ourselves and move forward, looking out for one another along the way.

The Influencer Effect Influencer! Educator! Ambassador! What even constitutes a wellness expert these days? As we sit at the cusp of a social media–induced advertising revolution, it seems anyone with a smartphone has a soapbox and a built-in following. So who can we really trust? Finding a reliable authority isn’t as cut-and-dried as it may seem on TikTok. Mindbody Senior Vice President Regina Wallace-Jones defines a wellness expert as someone who has achieved the requisite training or certifications to engage on the topics they’re educating on, combined with an audience that can attest to their impact. Seems like a no-brainer. Unfortunately, the impetus to separate fact from fiction lies on us. For example: Is the individual promoting intermittent fasting a licensed nutritionist? Is the influencer touting two-a-day workouts a certified

128

Artful Living

trainer? Or are they masquerading as authorities? Few of us have the time or the desire to study credentials, plus engaging content and sky-high follower counts can be entrancing. But then there are experts like Deepika Chopra (no relation to Deepak), a rare breed coupling extensive expertise with a strong social presence. Nicknamed the “optimism doctor,” the professional psychologist is a proponent of fusing holistic wellness with evidence-based science. “I appreciate the value that so many social media– based wellness ‘experts’ give their community,” she explains. “There are instances where this is helpful, but there are also instances where this can go in the opposite direction. For my own practice, I firmly believe that my formal training and supervised clinical and practical work created a really necessary foundation in order for me to offer my services and expertise in the way I do now.” Some skeptics are turned off by the term “wellness expert” entirely because of its ambiguity. Others point out that all social media content should be taken with a grain of salt. What’s certain is that alluring influencers and actual experts are unfortunately intermixed — and that it’s up to us to tell the difference.

The Anti-Wellness Movement “Your bad habits can kill you, but your good habits won’t save you,” cultural critic Fran Lebowitz opines in her Netflix docuseries Pretend It’s a City. Touché, Fran. This is essentially the elevator pitch for the anti-wellness movement (of which she’s a part): You don’t have to buy into the market to be the best version of yourself. Anti-wellness supporters ask, When you remove the money, products and healthism hoopla from the equation, what are you left with? They propose that living well doesn’t necessitate buying items stamped with the word “wellness.” That said, being anti-wellness isn’t as dramatic as it sounds. Nor is it as extreme as never purchasing essential oils or weighted blankets again. Rather, advocates remain unseduced by clever marketing schemes and are pushing for a wellness revolution. The movement may be quiet, but it’s gaining momentum. Podcasts, documentaries and social media accounts have cropped up to alert the public of the industry’s shortcomings — and its potential dangers. Among them is Chronic By HuffPost, a podcast focused on what wellness means for the chronically unwell. It’s hosted by HuffPost UK editor Lucy Pasha-Robinson, who herself battled endometriosis and asserts that “wellness culture is ableism in sheep’s clothing.” She’s one of the many challenging the industry to move away from its ableist messaging: Cure your depression! Get rid of inflammation! Cleanse your way to better health! This kind of language implies that living well and living with chronic illness, which affects some 133 million Americans, are mutually exclusive. And who’s to say what makes you feel good? Consider the recent rage room phenomenon. At places like the Break Bar and Just Smash It, you can bust old televisions and ceramic dishes to your heart’s desire. Although

it may seem like the antithesis of a meditative yoga session, it’s therapeutic to some. All things considered, these anti-wellness supporters just might be onto something in their quest for a wellness revolution. After all, it sure is ironic that we as a nation are so obsessed with wellness, yet we’re famously unwell.

The Final Verdict So you want to get well. Now what? Let’s pretend for a moment that the trillion-dollar wellness market doesn’t exist. Gone are the fancy elixirs, the cure-all creams and the state-of-the-art devices that are raking in unbelievable profits. Yes, the industry is ripe with innovative goods that claim to support our well-being. But its overwhelmingly commercial nature can be blinding. In the face of global suffering, the importance of self-care is more pronounced than ever before. And it’s ultimately up to us to determine what caring for ourselves looks like. As you begin (or reorient) your wellness journey, consider Global Wellness Day founder Belgin Aksoy’s advice: “It’s time we remember what we already know.” As a refresher, wellness spans physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, social and environmental realms. Do your best to nurture these facets — with or without stuff — and you’re well on your way to becoming definitively well. Of course, that’s easier said than done. Products, services and misinformation cloud the industry with a thick haze. And gosh, is it all tempting. Enhancing your smoothie with energy-boosting herbs or luxuriating in a gold-infused face mask may seem like quicker fixes than making time for daily meditation, optimizing your sleep hygiene or taking that much-needed PTO day. But it’s important to recognize that you have the tools you need within you (and not your wallet). Take Michelle Obama, for example. For her, nurturing her well-being means learning to navigate life’s highs and the lows. “Over the course of your adulthood, you develop your own tools,” she said on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert earlier this year. “I’m trying to get [my daughters] and other young people to start thinking about, What are your tools? The things that bring you joy, the things that bring you calm and peace. I know those things for myself now, but it’s taken decades to develop those tools.” And that looks different for each of us. From free selfguided practices like journaling and breathwork to vetted expert-provided services like therapy and bodywork, you get to curate the wellness toolbox that meets your individual needs. And if that self-care regimen includes a favorite indulgence, so be it. As certified holistic health coach Jeannine Morris Lombardi aptly puts it, “You can purchase all the pricey memberships, but in the end, the most important thing you can invest in is yourself.” So to buy in or not to buy in? Sorry, but that answer is entirely up to you. What’s certain, though, is that there’s undeniable value in putting yourself first. It’s perhaps the greatest (and simplest) takeaway to come out of these trying times. And it’s a sentiment that will ring true until the end of time — well beyond the lifespan of that hot new wellness trend.

Baldamar marks the turning point where we usher in the new standard for style, service and steak. It means the menu’s made with old-world craft at its core and modern day meat eaters in mind — with flavors forged in fire and folded into pure primal perfection. It’s where every steak is aged 40 days and 40 nights for a taste of biblical proportion, and where crazy-fresh seafood means it was caught during your morning commute. At the bar sits every spirit imaginable, and someone who isn’t afraid to use them. This is more than a new steakhouse. It’s a line in the sand. It’s not just where you celebrate special occasions. It’s where you create them.

In

our increasingly casual society — one in which most interactions seem to occur through a computer screen — the idea of shopping for a custom-made suit may sound obsolete. But our casual, mass-produced society is exactly what makes the craftsmanship of an experienced tailor so very attractive. Like any artisanal product, a truly custom suit is not as easy to find as it once was, but gentlemen need not travel to London’s legendary Savile Row to be properly fitted. In the tailoring world, “custom-made” could mean “madeto-measure,” implying a degree of customization, but a process involving a fair amount of standardization, and made-to-measure garments, are often manufactured far from the supervision of the clothier selling them. “Bespoke,” the ultimate degree of customization, suggests a protocol of individualized fittings, construction of a unique pattern and in-house, hand-tailoring. “In a world that is increasingly geared to fast and low-quality fashion, nothing stands out more than a well-tailored

IN A WORLD OF EVERYDAY-CASUAL AND ZOOM MEETINGS, SOME MIGHT BELIEVE THE CUSTOM-MADE SUIT IS OUT OF STYLE, BUT THE LUXURY TRADITION CONTINUES.

bespoke suit,” states Arthur van de Laak, editor of MenStyleFashion. In Chicago, Nicholas Joseph has been accommodating gentlemen seeking bespoke suits for 15 years. In the Windy City, this typically includes high-priced attorneys, C-suite executives, plastic surgeons, and renowned restaurateurs. “Nothing in your closet will fit you better, in terms of both fit and lifestyle,” says founder Nicholas Hansen of a genuine bespoke suit. Upon arrival at Nicholas Joseph, a customer is counseled on what will look best for his body shape and can select from thousands of fabrics from Zegna, Loro Piana, Vitale Barberis Canonico, even vicuña (an exotic South American wool). Several fittings later, a finished product can be received by the client well within a month, an exceptionally quick turnaround in an industry that requires patience. Hansen explains that even before the pandemic, the company was adapting to societal trends. “Since Goldman Sachs’ casual announcement two years ago, we started positioning ourselves more toward the wedding market,” says Hansen, who notes a single client may request three custom pieces — something for the rehearsal dinner, a suit or tux for the big day, and a jacket for brunch.

Made-to-measure suits at Nicholas Joseph begin at an approachable $795, competitive with high-end department stores, while bespoke suits begin at $2,795. Hansen reports that his shop’s bespoke suit, crafted from Zegna fabric, runs $3,745, less than one would spend for a made-to-measure suit at the Zegna boutique on Michigan Avenue in Chicago. Furthermore, a Nicholas Joseph client will have many more fabric choices, as well as options regarding the lining, buttons, extra pockets, or inscriptions. Gentlemen looking for a bespoke suit in New York gravitate to Michael Andrews Bespoke. The Greenwich Village showroom is elegantly masculine, with dramatic 20-foot ceilings, modern chandeliers and a well-stocked 12-foot bar with antique cash register. The firm presents trunk shows at luxury hotels in Abu Dhabi, Washington, D.C. and founder/CEO Michael Andrews’ hometown of Atlanta. Andrews, a former attorney, recounts, “I joined a conservative law firm requiring full business dress five days a week, and since I came from a tech startup where I worked in cutoffs and flip-flops, I was initially a critic of the policy.” Andrews quickly developed a passion for fine clothing, but lamented that the only custom-made suits a young attorney could afford were tailored overseas.

“Here, our suits are the quality of the finest garments in the world, but half the price of Zegna or Tom Ford,” states Andrews, who reports his bespoke suits begin at about $2,000, but can run much higher. “If you want it dipped in gold, we’ll do it for you,” quips Andrews, who adheres to guidelines established on London’s Savile Row. At Michael Andrews Bespoke, a unique pattern is created for each customer and the garment is constructed in-house by a single tailor. For fabrics, Andrews prefers blends, rather than 100 percent wool or silk, comparing the resulting nuances to a fine Bordeaux. The former attorney views his personal role as a consultant, stating, “Our job is to understand what the client wants and needs, translating that into what looks best on him.” After an initial consultation and three subsequent fittings, a client’s suit is ready in eight to ten weeks. Through relationships with Broadway productions, opera companies and television studios, Michael Andrews Bespoke has fitted a long list of celebrities, from Leonardo DiCaprio to Bono. Most clients, however, are attorneys and bankers, corporate executives, professional athletes, or anybody serious about investing in their appearance. Compensating for loosening dress codes on Wall Street, Michael Andrews now creates garments for women, as well as jeans and shoes made through the same bespoke process — even face masks. In laid-back Los Angeles, Johnathan Behr Bespoke Clothiers accommodates attorneys, Fortune 500 CEOs, and even occasional technology entrepreneurs that usually prefer black T-shirts. “What drove suit sales back in the ’80s was a demand for designer labels, but today the most coveted thing in suits is bespoke craftsmanship,” reports Behr. The L.A. clothier has created suits for musicians Mick Fleetwood and Bob Dylan, and Hollywood turned to Behr to dress actors in Mad Men and Fifty Shades of Grey. Prior to the pandemic, demand for bespoke suits was strong, maintains Behr, who notes, “In the blogosphere, having a bespoke suit made became a bucket-list item for men.” There are many expensive boutiques in L.A. delighted to measure gentlemen for custom suits (typically manufactured thousands of miles away), but Behr reports he is the city’s only truly bespoke suit maker. Behr advises first-time customers should expect to budget about $3,500 and that patience is required. “Bespoke is not for the impatient man who wants something fast, but for the man who wants something done perfectly,” he says, adding, “I’ll do as many fittings as necessary to get it right.” Unlike some bespoke clothiers, Behr has been unwilling to compromise his standards with virtual fittings, even during the pandemic. Some clients tend to be too conservative, suggests Behr. “You can order a solid color, but because bespoke offers you infinite options, you should have a little more fun with your choices,”

“What drove suit sales back in the ’80s was a demand for designer labels, but today the most coveted thing in suits is bespoke craftsmanship,” reports Behr. says the Southern California native. Noting the level of collaboration varies, he reports some customers have a precise idea of what they want, while others rely on his expertise. Behr explains that by assessing a gentleman’s weight, height, skin tone, and hair color, he can

R E A LT Y

determine what will work best, and derives additional information about a client’s lifestyle through a brief interview. “Recommending the right fabric is something you’ve got to get right, because if you choose the wrong fabric, it doesn’t matter how beautiful the tailoring is.”

ith the mass migration of home buyers seeking exceptional luxury properties in Florida, historically low inventory and continued low interest rates, the state has become one of the most desirable sellers’ markets in the country. As a haven for those seeking an elegant lifestyle in a resort-style atmosphere, sellers of Florida luxury homes now find themselves in an extremely enviable position with the ability to command the highest price on their investment. Coldwell Banker Global Luxury® property specialists have the expertise to help their clients make the most of this hot market. In addition to providing luxury sellers with distinctive marketing materials that showcase their extraordinary properties to an affluent clientele, Luxury Property Specialists have access to the RealVitalize ® program, which can benefit even the most exceptional homes.

This innovative program offers a convenient way to make sure your home is ready to impress buyers by assisting with home improvement costs, which are paid back when your home sells. Sophisticated buyers expect a wellappointed home that speaks to luxury living and highend refinements – upgraded finishes, modern aesthetic enhancements, advanced technology systems and impeccable landscaping. Using the RealVitalize program to meet those expectations is a smart way to attain top dollar for your home and get it sold quickly. With no hidden fees, markups or interest charges, and up to $50,000 available for project costs on $1 million+ properties, the program offers a remarkable opportunity to prepare your home for sale, with access to top-rated service providers from Angi, which harnesses both HomeAdvisor and Angie’s List networks. Luxury home sellers use the RealVitalize program to enhance their property and pique the interest of a discriminating audience. Whether simply adding a few finer amenities or thoroughly appointing the home to exquisite perfection with lavish additions such as a wine cellar, a relaxing spa retreat or an opulent home theater, the benefits of the program serve the seller well with impressive results. Most homes using the RealVitalize program sell at or above list price*. Yet stories from agents tell of even greater return. “My sellers were thrilled with the program. Using the RealVitalize program, we were able to quickly update and rebrand their home, go back on the market and sell quickly and for the highest dollar,” said Tampa Bay Luxury Property Specialist Jennifer Zales, whose affluent client’s home was competing against pristine new construction homes.

Sellers of luxury properties have busy schedules that often don’t allow time to find vendors, let alone supervise their work. The RealVitalize program relieves this burden and provides added peace of mind by vetting the vendors in advance. In today’s highly competitive real estate market, sellers want and expect even more than market value. “In order to deliver the highest sales price, we must present the home to stand out even more among the competition. A program such as RealVitalize allows us to create the best possible listing,” said Sherri Pfefer, a Coldwell Banker Realty affiliated agent in Fort Lauderdale.

After

Pfefer utilized the RealVitalize program to help her out-ofstate clients sell their home after the property had been listed with another agent and sat on the market for over a year. Even with her clients not in residence, they were able to use the RealVitalize program for a much-needed master bedroom renovation by removing an elevated Jacuzzi that was in the bedroom, not the bathroom, hindering the sale of the home. After the makeover and within weeks of the project’s completion, the property was under contract. Another one of Pfefer’s clients used $25,000 from the RealVitalize program to remove dated wallpaper and faux finishes, refresh the interiors with new wall paint and successfully stage the home for an impressive showing. This modest expenditure helped ensure that the penthouse condo sold before a listing extension was needed for an impressive $3.6 million. Staging is key to sparking buyers’ imaginations and giving them a glimpse into the lifestyle each home affords. “My luxury seller used the program to stage their new construction home with a luxury home stager. The end result was nothing less than spectacular. We created a lifestyle for the luxury buyer. The house sold in record time,” noted Weston Luxury Property Specialist Rose Sklar. The RealVitalize program offers the finishing touch and impressive results for luxury homes. If you would like to learn more about the program, visit RealVitalize.com.

Artful Living

DURING A TIME WHEN “WORK FROM HOME” IS CONSTANTLY

being redefined, one Minnesota family blended their household and horse business into a dynamic property with the help of Nor-Son Custom Builders, David Charlez Designs and Studio M Interiors. Previously, their residence and training center were 20 miles apart, creating excessive travel time, especially during foaling season when the animals require extra care. In finding a unique site with 40 acres of woods, prairie and wetland, they were able to build a real live/work ranch, allowing them to be in two places at once. Now, the stables are just a short stroll from their 5,000-square-foot home, complete with soaring ceilings, panoramic views and a classic covered front porch. It’s truly a breath of fresh air, but the key was not to make it feel too country. “I like to tease that she’s a little more country and he’s a little more rock-and-roll,” says Studio M Senior Interior Designer Lori Handberg. Indeed, the wife wanted more farmhouse feel with painted finishes while the husband wanted lots of woods and modern accents. To marry the two styles, Handberg created an aesthetic that was rustic yet elevated. Inspired by mountain homes in Lake Tahoe and the Midwest, the team aimed for what she calls “modern lodge,” with clean lines and open spaces. But before they could nail the style, getting started was half the battle. “Of the 40 acres, 80% is wetland; there was just too much muck,” recalls Nor-Son Project Manager Brody Schmid. When they began work on the foundation, they quickly realized it wasn’t all native soil underfoot, and the crew had to adjust the house’s placement on the site then screw anchors deep into the ground to secure it. But the challenge resulted in a win, as the elevated abode allows for stunning ranch vistas from the porch. “The home sits higher on the hill with views of the barns,” Schmid notes. “You can watch the horses grazing.” After battling the wetlands came the consideration of harsh winds. Schmid called for triple-pane glass to cut out the cold as the residence was designed to be wrapped in glass. To maximize the 14-foot ceilings in the great room, the windows are split into three sections, capturing the incredible vistas while keeping the scale comfortable and unimposing. More warmth comes through all the timber posts and beams inside and out, adding to the dark, woodsy exterior tones. The rich palette, intended to blend in with the surrounding environs, also helps ground the sizable home into the lot. “The scale feels grand, but not overwhelming,” Schmid points out. “The fascia element is double the size of a typical house, lending a strong, oversize presence that’s very lodge-like,” adds David Charlez Designs Principal Dave Zweber. “But even though it’s oversize, it’s simplified.” To achieve the modern lodge aesthetic while keeping in mind the family’s realistic day-to-day needs, the team opted to skip shades of white altogether inside. “There’s no way they could maintain the cleanliness of white trim,” says Handberg. “This had to work with their ranch lifestyle.” True to her word, there’s no white paint, no white trim — not even a white toilet in the powder room! The result is a dramatic, unexpected look that’s also easy to clean. Instead, a woodsy palette of rough woods and clean box beams is featured throughout from floor to ceiling. In the great room, a stone fireplace bears a sturdy mantle with substantial metal brackets, whereas the hearth room’s fireplace boasts acid-washed metal panels with a sleeker mantle crafted from trees that were cleared for the stables. The kitchen’s brown woods are contrasted with a charred black island. Hints of metal add an edge in the overhead lights and on the custom hood (finished in the same manner as the fireplace by Bilt Fab). And a slab of azure quartzite has streaks of a rust hue running through it, which also repeats in the hand-crackled backsplash tile — a far cry from bright white subway. In going country (for her!), Handberg wove in soft denim hues in the office, laundry room and baths with painted blue cabinetry. To dial in a little rock-and-roll (for him!), the lower level features a Western saloonstyle whiskey bar primed for good times with family and friends after a long day. “Like everything, it’s about balancing raw and rustic with more refined,” Handberg explains. Certainly fitting for a home that was created to achieve better balance.

DESIGN

WITH HIS TRADEMARK ROUND GLASSES AND EASYGOING

charm, Bruce Kading has a knack for infusing his work with a spirit of place. Be it an airy loft in Minneapolis or a historic brownstone in New York City, he fills these homes with countless design details, resulting in an environment that’s at once layered and livable. “I try to create an ambiance that is elemental to the client and enhances their life,” he explains. To be sure, an encyclopedic knowledge of decorative arts is at the core of it all. Kading has a lifelong passion for touring historic estates — from the Hearst Castle in California to the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina — whose key design principles and architectural elements have seeped into his aesthetic rigor. “A sense of history is always what grounds a project,” he says. “It’s what gives the home a soul.” With a mighty four-person team, Minneapolis-based Bruce Kading Interior Design is equally at ease with historic renovations or new construction. The firm has received numerous accolades during its 11-year tenure, including both Best in Show and first place in the 2020 ASID MN Awards for a South Dakota residence that has all the romance of a French chateau. Most recently, Kading’s team set its design sights on a 12-year-old Medina home originally built in the style of the American West. The idea was to lighten up the interiors and infuse them with a sense of classicism and timelessness, evoking the feel of a European estate. That concept came alive in the sunroom, where Kading replaced the former terra cotta tile on the fireplace with a rich marble and clad the walls

in linen damask with muted whispers of gold and gray. For a nuanced shift, he had the stark white woodwork glazed with a softer, creamier white — as if it had gently faded over time. “The room feels different throughout the day as the sunlight changes,” he observes. Artful attention was lavished on the kitchen, which was transformed into a modern space with European touches. Antique-mirrored backsplashes bounce light into the room, while a pewter-topped island invites casual dining. But the focal point, no doubt, is the custom wooden door and frame concealing the refrigerator. Exquisitely hand chiseled by woodcarver Erik Wyckoff, the striking cartouche sets a regal tone. Decorative painter Jennifer Raskob Kranz added layers of aged, muted color, reflecting the essence of an Old World interior. “I wanted it to feel as though an old door or perhaps the front of an armoire was brought in,” Kading notes. All this design magic has created a loyal following. Past clients are always calling Kading to refresh their interiors or to reimagine a vacation retreat in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho or California. But of all the requests, he’s especially honored when children of longtime clients ask him to help with a new construction or renovation project. “I’ve known them for years and watched them grow up, so it’s a real compliment to be invited to design a legacy home for a new generation,” he concludes. TREND REPORT

FIVE KITCHEN DESIGN TRENDS TO WATCH IN 2022. P R E S E N T E D B Y F E R G U S O N B AT H , K I TC H E N & L I G H T I N G G A L L E RY

STYLES ARE, IF NOTHING ELSE, CYCLICAL. WHAT WAS ONCE

out is now in, and what is now in will inevitably be forced out in the future. Thanks to this circular fashion, there’s always something new (or newish) to look out for year in and year out. As we plan our exit of 2021 and head into 2022, the experts at Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery are here with an early look at the styles you can expect to see even more of in the new year.

Modern Organic

Bring the outside in and ground your space with a look inspired by the world around us — a look that incorporates natural textures, clean lines, and the fusion of woods, stones and metals. Implementing this style in the kitchen produces harmony by creating a space that honors the very ingredients we use in everyday living.

Newstalgia

What’s in? Wallpaper. But don’t panic just yet. This style is all about celebrating the comfort of older (see “vintage” or “antique”) items and updating them for modern living. Using fanciful, decorative wallpaper in your kitchen can provide a tasteful tribute to the warm nostalgia we all love.

Talking Tech

Smart technology is here to stay. It’s been on our minds for the past few years, but the advancements just keep coming. Preheat the oven on your way home, get a live look inside your fridge while you grocery shop or ask your virtual assistant to pour you a cup of coffee. The opportunities are endless when we’re talking kitchen technology.

Minimalist

Simplicity is stunning. Built-in appliances, no-handle cabinets, matte paints and more — all of these contribute to the style we just can’t get enough of. Rid your space of unnecessary or clunky accessories and embrace the clean countertop. Not only will it mean less cleaning, it’ll be easier on the eyes as well.

Multi-Functionality

Make the most of your space with multi-functional appliances and accessories. From sinks that serve as cutting boards and rinsing mats to drawers that double as refrigerated prep stations, your kitchen can be more than simply a place to cook meals — it can become an all-in-one entertainment area. Planning a home makeover? Visit build.com/ferguson to shop online, schedule a personalized consultation or explore the latest interior design trends.

S U S TA I N A B I L I T Y CENTERED WEALTH FINANCIAL ADVISOR JINA

Penn-Tracy has been an environmental advocate ever since she had cancer as a teen, caused by a medication her mother took while pregnant. Her husband, Scott, is an environmental engineer and the COO of a renewable energy technology business. So it makes sense that when it came time for the Twin Cities couple to move, they wanted not just an environmentally friendly home, but a net-zero one — that is, no carbon emissions. It involved a lot of research and careful thought at every step, but in the end, they never had to trade design for efficacy. “There’s this false dichotomy that your own welfare and that of the planet are in conflict,” Jina says. “But that’s not true at all. What’s fundamentally good for the planet is good for us. It’s reframing the question and asking, How do I do well for myself, others and the planet all at the same time?” One shining example: their new net-zero home in the Linden Hills neighborhood of Minneapolis. As with any new build, the structural components were important: foundation, framing, wiring, plumbing and the like. But in this case, every decision became paramount. Not only did each specific material choice raise or lower the 3,176-square-foot abode’s carbon footprint score, so too did its placement. They worked with Amaris Homes to develop the “deep green” energy efficiency they craved, including a doubleframing technique to stop energy transfer, a super insulated basement, and Kolbe triple-pane windows in casement. In one very notable design instance, their net-zero ambitions even dictated the house’s shape: long and narrow rather than square or wide, to allow for the maximum number of solar panels in the most efficient arrangement. During the planning phase, Scott became COO of Renew Power Systems Inc., which engineers power controls circuitry that enables energy systems capabilities found in nature. “The more complex the system gets, the more stable it gets — just like nature,” Jina explains. The company’s state-of-the-art technology allows the couple to store energy from their solar and switch back and forth from the grid to off the grid, plus neighbors can join in the system, too. After doing her homework on energy-efficient appliances, Jina realized she’d have to swap her beloved gas range for induction. “I love cooking with gas because you can see the flame and hear the sizzle,” she admits. “But now, I’m an induction convert. It’s super responsive; you can go down to a very low heat and have roaring high heat faster than gas.” That’s perfect for the entertaining spaces she envisioned, ones that would accommodate their friends, adult children and growing families. A house that was beautiful but also a house where you can walk in with your shoes on. “I like to have a fun, eclectic environment where I’m not worried about dog fur or a child I’m chasing, trying to make sure nothing gets ruined,” she notes. As for the interior design, that came with a measure of sustainability, too. Environmentally friendly ceramic tile, zero-VOC paint (Sherwin Williams’ apropos Unfussy Beige, to be exact) and spare use of common materials like marble were no-brainers. Adding a personal touch are rescued silver pieces Jina has collected from thrift shops. “They’re $3 at Goodwill because no one wants to polish them,” she exclaims with the giddiness that comes with a bargain. “They’re all over my house.” And outside, a covered walkway to the garage allows for more solar panels to compensate for the window seat bumpout (a must-have compromise) that drove their score up to six. In the backyard, a rain garden, vegetables and fruit trees provide not only sustenance but a beautiful backdrop for garden parties. “When you focus on what really makes you happy, you need fewer material things and more people,” Jina muses, reflecting on their new net-zero home. “I want to inspire people, not impress people — there’s a difference.”

LAKE EFFECT JOHN KRAEMER & SONS CREATES A MODERN, LIGHT-FILLED RAMBLER THAT BRINGS AVID ARTISAN HOME TOUR GOERS’ DREAMS FULL CIRCLE. BY MERRITT BAMRICK

WHEN YOU EXPERIENCE THE ARTISAN HOME TOUR, YOU CAN

expect the best of the best in terms of artistic vision paired with master craftsmanship. For one Minnesota couple, a certain level of quality stood out from the rest during the 2019 tour. They connected with award-winning builder John Kraemer & Sons to fulfill their dreams of lakeshore living. And just two years later, their modern rambler would secure its own spot on that very tour. After a lengthy search, the owners found their dream lot in Tonka Bay, a highly coveted area thanks to its expansive vistas. “The lot is made for taking in Lake Minnetonka’s incredible west-facing views,” says John Kraemer, vice president and director of sales and marketing. “The sunsets are so strong regardless of the time of year.” With architectural design created in partnership with Charlie & Co.,

interiors by Ellington & Co. Design, and landscaping by Southview Design, this 5,536-square-foot abode captures those magnificent water views while maximizing outdoor space. It’s perched atop a bluff with a gradual slope that greets more than 100 feet of shoreline. The kitchen connects directly to an outdoor dining patio with a fireplace and gathering area, while the lower level takes you straight to the lakeshore. “Connecting to the site from all levels was incredibly important to the clients,” note Colby Mattson and Jonathan Mason, Charlie & Co. Design principal and project manager, respectively. “The house was carefully positioned to take advantage of views and paths to the lake.” Also on the wish list was a space comfortable enough to exist in two realms: day-to-day living for a couple of empty nesters as well as hosting a large influx of guests, family and future grandchildren. With careful

consideration and collaborative flexibility, the team designed a fivebedroom, five-bathroom residence with a completely livable main floor plus an inviting, easily accessible lower level. The exterior is decidedly modern, with natural materials and traditional details that give it warm, approachable appeal. A flat roof in the center is flanked by pitched roofing on either side, while a mix of stucco, cedar soffits, Fond du Lac stone and painted lap siding creates a sleek aesthetic that’s easy to maintain. A wall of glass across the back of the home lets the owners enjoy the full lake effect. On the front of the house, an art wall greets guests in the entryway. “This was an intentional move by the clients, who wanted privacy from the front,” says Kraemer, noting that the architectural element shields the lake view until further inside the home. A few steps around the wall reveals the

great room, which is entirely open to the kitchen, formal dining room and panoramic vistas of the westward waters framed by black Marvin Modern windows. Although a standard window can be a beautiful solution (“like a picture frame,” notes Mattson), the team chose to wrap the glass around the corners of the house to widen the views and capitalize on height. The wrapped glass creates uninterrupted sightlines that encourage the owners and guests to take in all the architectural details. It also makes for a seamless visual transition between indoors and out. From the living room, for example, you can look across the house and see the outdoor patio. And from the kitchen, you can see the Fond du Lac stone both on the exterior and its integration in the living room. “We wanted to make sure the clients could appreciate all aspects of the architecture they invested in while also bringing the idea of outdoor living inside,” shares Kraemer.

To accommodate the clients’ love for baking, the abode boasts an expansive gourmet kitchen with stainless-steel Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances, plus a graciously sized butler’s pantry, perfect for catering and keeping the kitchen clear of clutter. The home reinvents the man cave, taking it out of the typical basement and into the outdoors, with a side staircase leading right down to the lake. Complete with a wood-burning fireplace, grill, television, and dining and lounge area, this outdoor space can be enjoyed well past summer thanks to built-in ceiling heaters. “Extending the seasonality was a key component of this project,” Kraemer notes. To wit: The asphalt roof, driveway snowmelt system and high-density fiberglass Marvin Modern windows are all wrapped in a signature John Kraemer & Sons build that winterizes the residence. The owners’ suite on the main level is a bona fide retreat, complete with a large walk-in closet and a freestanding soaking tub perfect for relaxing. This private oasis and the in-home elevator were incorporated with aging in place in mind. Downstairs, the team set out to create “the most non-basement basement” possible. That meant high ceilings and creative solutions to bring more natural light into the family room, bar area and three guest suites. “The entire design is laid out to maximize available daylight throughout the day,” says Mattson, who explains that the backside of a rambler is typically underground, so natural light is not evenly dispersed. The team positioned the staircase on the abode’s eastern perimeter, adjacent to a large bank of windows to create a vast opening that lets sunlight filter in. They also opted for a main-level patio instead of a wraparound deck to alleviate any long shadows that might be cast into the lower level. A separate lake entrance downstairs makes summers out on the water a dream, letting guests come and go with ease. A significant benefit of the team working together for the duration of the project was the ability to problem solve and creatively collaborate on the go. “The design isn’t done when construction begins; we continually look for opportunities throughout the process,” shares Mattson, recalling an onsite meeting with the clients where the team reconfigured the owners’ suite to allow for more privacy. They also played around to find just the right mix of exterior materials. The end result could’ve easily felt like a competition between the stucco, cedar and stone, but the team continued to iterate to find the most cohesive, impactful solution. “There’s just no replacement for being able to design and respond to existing conditions in the moment,” adds Kraemer. The clients experienced this level of care and craftsmanship the first time they toured a John Kraemer & Sons home. The cabinetry, the millwork, the painting — that finished level of quality is where the artistry shines — are now elements they appreciate every day in their own abode and as they host generations to come. “The home is distinctive in that it’s modern in such a way that’s still warm and approachable,” says Kraemer of the overwhelmingly positive commentary received during the Artisan Home Tour. Clearly, it’s the small, masterful touches that make the difference for homeowners and tour goers alike — and this full-circle project proves you never know when those admirers will be one and the same.

The story of a

pasta sauce so good it took 3 years to make.

When we set out to create our Signature pasta sauce, we thought, “How hard can it be?” But from the moment we sipped the first taste from the wooden spoon, we knew it needed something. It needed to be as bright as the Mediterranean sun. It needed to bubble with the delicate depth of a Puccini opera – composed of only a few notes, yet performed with overwhelming beauty and power. It needed to sweep you off your feet, only to break your heart like a wave against the cliffs of Polignano a Mare. It needed to fill the air like the songs from the gondolas

THERE’S A NEW FASHION ICON WE DIDN’T KNOW WE NEEDED.

Since the days of Carrie Bradshaw and Sex and the City, we’ve been waiting for another trendsetter to arrive on the scene. A little Western television show called Yellowstone debuted in 2018 on a relatively unknown cable channel, and within a few episodes, the character Beth Dutton was making a statement. She has stormed into the fashion world like the strong force she is on the show. If there’s one word to describe her, it’s fierce, both in her spirit and her style. The West is often characterized as wild, bold and free, and that’s what makes not only the lifestyle but the fashion so appealing. Expertly played by actress Kelly Reilly, Beth Dutton is the epitome of a strong, outspoken, hard-working female. From classic ranch looks to prairie dresses with cowboy boots, she wears it all well. It’s a complete 180-degree shift from Carrie Bradshaw’s obsession with Oscar de la Renta dresses and Manolo Blahnik heels, and women are loving it. Many of us are familiar with heritage workwear brands like Carhartt, traditionally worn by ranchers during long days on the farm. Today, Beth Dutton dons the trademark jacket, and it’s become as fashionable as it is functional.

206

Artful Living

Similarly, Pendleton blankets have a rich American history dating back 150 years. These Western-inspired wool blankets normally found in cabins and log homes have been turned into stylish cloaks by designer Lindsey Thornburg. Her creations have graced the shoulders of Beth Dutton many times on Yellowstone, and they have since been seen on celebrities like Kate Hudson and Blake Lively. To pull off this wild West meets East Coast look, it’s best to pair your ranch wear with something fashion-forward. If you want to try the Beth Dutton cloak, wear it with a skinny jean and a tall high-heeled boot this fall. I’m anxiously awaiting season four of Yellowstone to see what fashion statement comes next. Growing up riding horses and barrel racing, I have long loved the essence that Western style embodies. Fringe and feathers, leather and lace, wool and plaid — it’s all bold yet soft, just like strong, fearless women. So remember when it comes to being fashionable and fierce, all you need is confidence and some cowboy boots. I’m sure Ms. Dutton would agree. PLANTS ARE HAVING A MOMENT. IT’S A TREND PLAYING OUT IN OUR

homes, on social media — and now, in forward-thinking hotels across the globe. This hospitality design movement immerses travelers in the healing world of nature, with living walls, rooftop gardens and streaming water features. But it’s about more than just Instagram snaps. All that greenery has been shown to work wonders, from improving air quality to boosting our well-being. Here are the world’s top five biophilic design hotels that let you bask in nature’s restorative glory.

1 HOTEL WEST HOLLYWOOD CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES

While we might expect to find these garden-esque getaways nestled in wild settings, 1 Hotels proves that biophilic design is equally at home in urban environments. The hotelier’s 285-room West Hollywood outpost feels transportive, taking you from concrete to jungle as soon as you enter the lobby. Many of the spaces are ensconced in eye-catching greenery that stands out against a neutral palette of earthen stone walls, natural textiles and furnishings hewn from Aleppo pines. A strange phenomenon happens while staying here: As your eyes become accustomed to the plant-filled interiors, the cityscape’s abundant palm fronds and grassy lawns, when viewed from your guest suite, also begin to pop. This flora frenzy speaks to 1 Hotel’s deeply rooted (pun intended) sustainability ethos.

PAPAGAYO, COSTA RICA

Barely visible from sea or sky, Kasiiya Papagayo takes full advantage of its jungled landscape, blending into the coastal rainforests of Costa Rica’s far-flung Papagayo Peninsula. The eco-resort’s seven tented guest suites achieve cocoon-like luxury amid the rugged terrain, with plant life and tropical birdsong aplenty. In keeping with “leave no trace” design principles, the structures rest on platforms raised a few feet above the ground. The result? A property that lives in harmony with nature, letting flora and fauna roam the forest floor. You can opt to enjoy the expansive vistas of the Costa Rica coastline from your private terrace or let a naturalist take you on an immersive ocean or jungle adventure.

BENGUERRA ISLAND, MOZAMBIQUE One beautiful aspect of biophilic design? How it blends modern technology with indigenous building techniques. This is on full display at Kisawa, a first-of-its-kind resort that incorporates 3D-printed elements made from a locally derived, sand-based mortar. The resulting textured finish lets the property blend into its surrounding dunes, beaches and forest. “Kisawa” means unbreakable and signals the team’s commitment to building bonds between people and place, wilderness and well-being. Guests flow easily throughout the 12-bungalow resort thanks to an indoor/outdoor design that encourages constant connection with nature. It’s a connection worth exploring, as the area is home to some of the richest subtropical ecosystems in the Indian Ocean.

Perched on Sweden’s Lule River is a giant nest-like structure made from crisscrossing beams of local timber. Were it not for the size, Arctic Bath might be mistaken for the work of a bird or beaver. The intentionally randomly placed logs along its façade — indeed inspired by a bird’s nest — make this wellness destination a prime example of nature-centric design. Whether floating or frozen in place (depending on the season), Arctic Bath’s position along the reflective waterway enhances the region’s ethereal light displays, from winter’s aurora borealis to summer’s midnight sun. The property’s 12 land and water cabins are also constructed from local materials, with a more classic Scandinavian aesthetic. Wellness activities connect you with the natural world, be it an icy plunge in the Lule or a full-body massage infused with wild juniper.

Dubbed a “hotel in a garden,” Parkroyal Collection Pickering epitomizes Singapore’s reputation for forward-thinking design. Architects created an elevated area of green space approximately twice the size of adjacent Hong Lim Park. Large platforms bridge the hotel towers and feature a flowering understory, a waterfall, tall palm trees, hanging vines and more. The cascading clusters of eclectic foliage are visible from the property’s 367 guest rooms and communal spaces, resulting in pure sensorial pleasure at every turn. It’s truly a fantasy world made real. Ambling along the moss-like carpets amid such prolific plant life, you start to forget you’re in a city at all. The term “urban oasis” comes to mind, yet it begs the question: If all structures were designed this way, would we need an oasis at all?

IT’S EASY TO FEEL SO AT HOME WHILE ON VACATION THAT YOU LONG TO CREATE THAT

same feeling in your actual home. For one Minnesota family who frequents Montana several times a year, they took that sentiment to heart, pulling everything they love about lodge life into the ultimate souvenir: a new house. Inspired by the West’s most famous lodges — including Big Sky’s Yellowstone Club and Jackson Hole’s Four Seasons — an expert team reimagined a full-time private resort, complete with a fly-fishing pond and outdoor fire pit, right here in the Twin Cities. “When you vacation, you want that sense of place,” says Rick Hendel of Hendel Homes, who oversaw the project with his team and wife, Amy, as well as architect James McNeal and principal designer Angela Liesmaki-Decoux. “For this home, it was all about creating that in Minnesota.” The first step was zeroing in on the key elements the owners love about those classic lodges, namely stones and woods mixed with glass and metal. The team utilized unique reclaimed wood sourced from out west with heavy muddling of brown and gray, echoing the coloration of the stone (native to both Minnesota and Montana) that they applied to the chimneys, siding and landscaping. To balance the rugged and rustic with contemporary and clean, Corten steel and galvanized metals grace the roofing and stairways, while glass runs generously throughout the 5,700-square-foot home’s connecting hallways and spaces. “It feels like you’re walking through glass blocks,” Amy notes, adding that they endeavored to make the interiors feel more modern with elements like the floating staircase and the windows’ contrasting black metal casing. Whereas the exterior rafters beneath the rooflines are sturdy and timeless, the interior beams become more linear and modern immediately upon entry. Straight lines throughout the abode ensure nothing errs too traditional, and the vibe becomes decidedly relaxed in the great room, where family and friends sink into that iconic resort ambiance.

“The great room feels like you’re in the lodge of the home,” Amy exclaims. Wood beams add warmth and depth to the soaring 15-foot ceilings, while stones surrounding the wood-burning fireplace bring the rockiness from outside in. The owners’ collection of Native American art, sculptures and collectibles along with tribal-inspired upholstery and textiles nod to the West as well. When not relaxing inside, it’s easy to gravitate out the French doors to the floating terrace, which can be seen directly through the front door. “The sightline brings you into the home and immediately out, connecting the front to the back,” Amy explains. Understandably, it’s a favorite spot for daytime sunning or evening cocktails. “There’s a sense of roof even though it’s all open to the night sky,” says architect McNeal, who kept the area as open as possible with steel beams and minimalistic cable wire so that residents and guests feel as though they’re floating above the open outdoor spaces dawn to dusk, especially as the abode glows at night with uplighting and downlighting tucked in the rafters. “It was all about the outdoor spaces and how they connect to the inside,” he notes. “The floating terrace allows you to enter right to outside, through the foyer to the terrace to the pond and into the wilderness.” Outside, the pool and gathering fire pit have obvious appeal, but the real showstopper is the one-ofa-kind pond feature. It begins out front and descends into a waterfall beneath the home and the floating terrace before spilling into the trout pond, where the owner, an avid fly-fisherman, practices casting. At six feet deep with a commercial-grade pump and a heating/cooling unit, it makes for happy fish all year long thanks to the manmade motion emulating a running river. “The integrated waterfall runs right underneath the bridge, and as long as it’s moving, the pond won’t freeze up,” McNeal explains. “Plus, it creates an environment right by the house with views.” From the undeniably unique trout pond to the iconic materials to the aspen trees surrounding the property, it’s easy for the owners to feel that sense of vacation right in their own backyard. “This home is transporting,” Amy concludes. “And it perfectly captures that lifestyle the clients just love.”

VOGUE HAS OFFICIALLY CROWNED HER THE NEW

fashion It girl. Her fans — including the likes of Lizzo, who called her “an actual bad bitch” — can’t wait to see the latest Instagram posts of her dripping in Chanel, Fendi and Hermès. And she’s being paid the big bucks to promote luxury wares. The twist? She’s a seven-pound Italian greyhound named Tika — and she’s the poster girl for the dog fashion craze. Our obsession with our pets is nothing new, but it’s definitely reached new heights amid the pandemic. To wit: The global dog clothing and accessories market hit $9.74 billion last year and is expected to balloon to $16.61 billion by 2028, according to market research firm Million Insights. Our four-legged friends are leading the fashion industry and setting trends. They’re strutting down runways. They’re penning books. They’re headlining in shows like Netflix’s Pet Stars, a series that follows an animal talent management agency. Public relations — for pups! Dressing up our dogs is a form of self-expression and drives our emotional connection with our pets. You could go as far as saying it’s science. Anthropomorphism, to be exact: the tendency to map human traits and emotions onto animals and inanimate objects. And it has an evolutionary purpose. For centuries, we’ve assigned human characteristics to non-human things to make sense of the world around us. Plus seeing our pets as human-like fulfills a social need — hence the rise in popularity during the past 18 months. Although adorning our pets dates back millennia, modern dog fashion took off in the early 2000s, with celebrities like Paris Hilton toting around her decked-out Chihuahuas. Donatella Versace made furry fashion even more fabulous when she dressed up her Jack Russell terrier, Audrey, in bedazzled collars in the early 2010s. “Pets are people’s children,” explains Loni Edwards, founder and CEO of the Dog Agency. The talent management firm was born out of her own dog’s Instagram fame in 2015 and today has offices in New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago. “People are waiting longer to have children, and they’re raising their pets

instead. We buy them clothes. We feed them the best food. We bring them with us when we travel.” It makes sense then that we can’t get enough of these celebrity canines — and that top brands have found a winning marketing strategy with them. Take Tika the Italian greyhound, with her 1.1 million Instagram followers. In a post of her wearing a Fendi jacket, she (or, more accurately, her human, Thomas Shapiro) nonchalantly writes, “You can take the girl out of Italy, but you can’t keep her away from exquisite Italian craftsmanship.” And for her 10th birthday, she posted a video of her donning a custom Shantell Design gown (one of her favorites) and cruising around her hometown of Montreal in the new Rolls-Royce Ghost. There’s no question Tika has fabulous fashion sense. In an interview, she tells me (play along here), “My most expensive item is a coat made by Ashi Studio. It was handmade for me for Paris couture week, and I wore it virtually at their show. It’s Victorianinspired and made out of crepe fabric and pleated organza with buttons down the front. Canine haute couture at its finest!” And she’s in good company in the doggie influencer club. Boobie Billie, a petite Italian greyhound/Chihuahua mix who sports silky babushkas, exploded on Instagram then launched her own fashion line, Boobie World, so humans can dress like her. Miniature purses dubbed Boobie Bags sell for $270, with matching babushkas going for $80. Boobie Billie emails me like it’s really her — and I, a sucker for animals with fierce personalities, lap it right up. “I’m a firm believer in timeless accessories,” she (or more likely, her cheeky PR rep) says. “I have a pretty fabulous collection, but my Louis bag is probably my favorite. It’s like, colors and cuts come in and out, but a statement bag is forever.” The business opportunities for these posh pooches go far beyond fashion. Case in point: A petite smooth-coated Brussels griffon named Sprout (get it?) just landed his first book deal. And Edwards of the Dog Agency released a primer for aspiring pet momagers earlier this fall, How to Make Your Dog #Famous: A Guide to Social Media and Beyond.

The cost for proper pooch fashion isn’t cheap because it’s a lifestyle.

She’s certainly the authority on the subject. “At the Dog Agency, we exclusively represent around 150 animals,” Edwards explains. “We come in as their business partner, and most of what we do is digital. The rates vary per dog, but influencers with millions of followers are in the $10,000 to $15,000 per post range.” Pups are, after all, safe brand ambassadors. They’re not going to get drunk at a party or get canceled when a questionable Tweet from 2016 resurfaces. “They’re extremely powerful marketing tools because they resonate with consumers on a deeper level,” she adds. “Pets are happy, and people associate those positive feelings toward the brand.” High-end fashion houses like Dior, Fendi, Prada and Versace are getting in on the action, too, with specially designed collections. “The industry is finally realizing that people don’t want basic, boring pet products,” notes Christopher Cargnoni, founder of top-selling dog streetwear line Fresh Pawz. “They want high-quality products that match their own personal aesthetics so they can feel more connected with their dog.” The cost for proper pooch fashion these days isn’t cheap because it’s a lifestyle. If you shop with ultra luxury dog fashion

label Pagerie, for example, a leather harness costs a cool $720 and the matching leash $525. Maxbone, which aims to “reimagine the pet industry,” features astrology T-shirts, knit jumpers and Aspen coats for upward of $140. And a Ruby Rufus cashmere sweater will set you back $135. Ruby Rufus Isaacs launched her eponymous line in 2013 with the help of Oprah Winfrey. “Somehow my luxury sweater prototypes ended up in the hands of Gayle King,” she says. “She flipped for them and showed them to Oprah. The next thing I know, O magazine wants to include a Ruby Rufus sweater in their Christmas gift guide. Our website crashed, and we sold out almost immediately.” If Oprah’s involvement is any indication, the sky’s the limit for these barking brand ambassadors. Tika hopes to one day sit front row at New York Fashion Week. Boobie Billie dreams of landing a Calvin Klein ad campaign. And why not? Brands are seeing a surge in engagement thanks to these canine celebrities, proving that fashion is more delightful on four legs. It’s good for business, and it’s good for our psyches. As Boobie Billie explains, it’s “a little moment of over-the-top extravagance to get us through it all.”

KYLE RUDOLPH KNOWS THE VALUE OF TEAMWORK. THE NFL PRO

— a tight end with the Minnesota Vikings for 10 seasons (now playing for the New York Giants) — understands that the tighter the team, the better the outcome. He followed that same playbook when he and wife Jordan decided to build their forever home in Minnesota. He grew up in Ohio, she in Michigan, but they formed deep connections to the Twin Cities community during his time as a Viking. The couple’s commitment to Masonic Children’s Hospital — they visited weekly pre-pandemic — culminated in Kyle Rudolph’s End Zone, a respite space for young patients and their families. “That place is very special to us,” Jordan notes. “We’ve been in Minnesota for 10 years,” she emphasizes. “After being here for so long, there’s no other place we could consider home. This is where our kids were born, we’re ingrained in the community, and our friends are here. This is home for us.” With a commitment to raising their young family in Minnesota — no matter where Kyle’s career takes him — the Rudolphs found a lot on Lake Minnetonka’s Maxwell Bay in 2018. Though they love California architecture (they once spent the off-season there and toured many houses), the couple looked to local talent to design and build their Minnesota residence. Serendipity played a role in selecting what Jordan calls “the dream team” of L. Cramer Builders + Remodelers, Swan Architecture, and interior designer Henri Interiors. For instance, the Rudolphs were neighbors with L. Cramer Vice President of Sales and Marketing Jennifer CramerMiller. As for interior design, friends recommended Amanda Lorenz at Henri. And when Kyle and architect Andrea Swan discovered they were both Notre Dame alums, the connection was immediate. “We really had this team metaphor going, which was perfect for how we put a

project together,” says Cramer-Miller. The Rudolphs had a vision. Jordan craved a modern farmhouse, white with black windows. Kyle wanted a sport court, with a fitness center, spa and golf simulator. They also needed room for their growing family: twins Andersyn and Finley, who turn 5 this fall; 2-year-old Henry; and a baby boy due to arrive soon. Plus the residence needed to be fit for the entertaining they love to do, indoors and out, with plenty of room for hosting out-of-town family and friends. Above all, they wanted a house that would exude comfort — an informal, put-your-feet-up sort of house. Through ingenious design, the Rudolph home maintains that comfortable family farmhouse demeanor despite its seven bedrooms, bunkroom, multitude of bathrooms, golf simulator, theater, fitness center, and impressive sport court. Retaining that feeling was the biggest challenge, Swan explains. On approach, the property presents a welcoming face to visitors, beckoning one and all to the charming front porch, complete with a swing. It doesn’t appear mansion-like, and no one would suspect that a massive sport court (half the size of a regulation NBA court with 23-foot ceilings) and fitness center lie 30 feet beneath the driveway. “A lot of structural gymnastics were required to make that happen,” Swan adds. L. Cramer built the fitness center/gym first, then jumped into an ambitious 18-month schedule to complete the rest of the house. This is where the dream team shone. “You couldn’t ask for a better team or a better process,” notes L. Cramer owner Greg Jurvakainen. “The Rudolphs were 100% invested in the process — always responsive and available.” And it shows in the results. The light-filled main level, with its 12-foot ceilings, transom windows over each doorway, and views to the lake, is

airy and welcoming. The great room and kitchen lend themselves to large gatherings, while the cozy dining nook, with its artisan-made table, is just right for family meals. Thoughtful details abound. The whitewashed brick arch that frames the kitchen — a detail Jordan had seen and loved in a California house — was built and color-matched to her specifications. She also wanted a custom look for the Cambria countertops on the double islands and the perimeter cabinetry by GK Millwork. “Jordan knew what she wanted and worked with Cambria to get it exactly right,” says Henri principal designer Lorenz. Cambria’s designers liked the results so much — a misty gray with dark veining and plenty of movement — that the company launched the pattern as Gladstone. The black-and-white palette, softened with neutrals, carries throughout the abode. Kyle’s office, situated in a turret-like space surrounded by windows in the front of the house, features sharp blacks. The kitchen islands of ebonized ash contrast with the countertops and wire-brushed white oak floors. Black cabinetry in the adjoining pantry continues the theme, as does the butler’s pantry with its black speckled Cambria countertops. The silvery gray stone used on the fireplace and on the home’s exterior (one of Swan’s finds, Fond du Lac Silver Webwall from Halquist in Wisconsin) subtly complements the color scheme. And then there’s that showstopping staircase — in fact, there are two staircases, both equally stunning. The one in front boasts black shiplap and multiple white lights. When the designers pitched that color scheme, they knew it was unconventional, but the couple loved it. “That really set the tone for the project,” notes Lorenz. “We knew they would take some risks here and there.” They ordered the textural white farmhouse lights from Circa Lighting in multiple sizes with extra cord and chain, “and crossed our fingers,” laughs Lorenz. “The installation took a full day and very patient electricians.”

The lights in the front hang down two-plus floors. In the rear stairwell, which reaches the fourth level fitness center, the designers took a similar approach with multiple custom pendants from Hennepin Made. Those beauties hang down more than three floors. “The light is so pretty when the lights are on at night,” Jordan gushes. For Jordan and Henri Interiors, this abode was just the beginning. She and Lorenz became fast friends during the project, working so well together that they decided to partner on a retail venture. Henri Home, a boutique home goods shop set to open this fall in Wayzata, will stock artisan-made furniture, pottery, lamps and other decor with a mod California-coastalmeets-desert vibe. Similar goods accessorize the owners’ suite — the Rudolphs’ sanctuary — on the main floor. On the upper level, twins Andersyn and Finley share connecting bedrooms, also a carefully considered decision. They may want to share a bedroom now, says Swan, but as adolescents, who knows? Her solution: a sliding barn door between the two spaces that allows for togetherness or privacy. With the bunkroom and play area above the garage as well as two guest rooms, one on the upper level and one on the lower, accommodating guests is easy — by design. Kyle and Jordan are close to their families, and they visit regularly. The couple loves hosting, and their new home offers the best of Minnesota lake hospitality: boating, swimming and fishing. The poolparty-friendly landscape, designed by Yardscapes, entices everyone outside. And if the weather should be uncooperative, guests can enjoy the theater, gym, exercise room, golf simulator and sauna. Then again, they can head for the porch swing and wile away the afternoon. A home, it’s often said, tells a story about its owners. This one has heart. It embraces family, friends, community and comfort. As Lorenz puts it, “It’s really true to the people who own it.”

Gesica Horn and Chad Loween Serene Oaks Dental

Gesica Horn, DDS, and Chad Loween, DDS, each have more than 20 years of experience in dentistry. But far from putting it on autopilot, the owners of Serene Oaks Dental push the boundaries of how dental care is practiced. After dental school, both pursued considerable additional education. Horn is now one of 86 accredited American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry fellows in the world. She’s recognized for providing the highest level of long-term functionality as well as beautiful aesthetics. As for Loween, he’s driven by a desire to help the industry evolve from one-tooth-at-a-time reactive fixes to a more holistic approach employing the latest technology. “Our population is aging and people are living longer,” he notes, adding that his focus is on protecting and preserving what we have. The balance of state-of-the-art technology — 3D digital wellness scans, digital impressions and same-day crown services, among others — with superb people skills makes Serene Oaks Dental a premier clinic. “What we have learned over the years is that you have to listen to the patient,” Loween explains. “When a patient feels heard, they’re much more comfortable making the best decisions for themselves.” Then there’s the softer side: Patients are assigned a care concierge, who walks them through appointment coordination, medical history and other communications. Plus a variety of spalevel accoutrements helps soothe any anxiety: aromatherapy, paraffin wax dips, warmed slippers, headphones for music or movies, and the like. All of that, in the end, leads to the kind of health, happiness and confidence patients are looking for. “The most rewarding thing you can do in dentistry is give someone the smile they have always wanted,” says Horn. “That can possibly impact the trajectory of a person’s life — and that’s pretty amazing.”

Jonny Reese Pros of the Rope

Coach Jonny Reese can teach you how to double dutch in less than a minute. No matter if you’re crossing the Mall of America rotunda, fresh off a Starbucks run with shopping bags in hand, or stopping by his Edina gym to ask about membership. “We hang our hat on it,” he says. The former collegiate and NBA development league basketball player discovered that jumping rope not only provides a body-firming, confidence-boosting workout — he says 10 minutes of rope work packs more punch than a 5K run — it also brings people together in a way that he never quite experienced with basketball. Although Pros of the Rope is a youth fitness program, as soon as those ropes come out, people of all generations light up. “It’s a nostalgic art that comes from subsidized housing projects,” Reese explains. “I take this seriously as a Black entrepreneur. Being able to bring a culturally responsive program to the community is really something.” While his cross-training classes and outreach work — he and his team of coaches turn ropes with libraries, parks and rec groups, you name it — strike a chord with lots of communities, Pros of the Rope struck a different kind of chord when they were invited to perform on the First Avenue stage with Minnesota musician Dessa in early 2020. The space on the hallowed stage was tight, but Reese knew he trained the team right, cheering them along. There was a swell of raves across social media almost instantaneously. Then came the pandemic, and with it, an important lesson: “I realized we are essential to this community because a lot of kids have struggled with physical and mental health,” he explains. “The seriousness of what we do is the joy of these kids. It means everything to them and to their parents, too.”

Sasha Zoghi and Saeid Homayouni Revolution Salon

Sasha Zoghi and Saeid Homayouni have been styling hair for decades, including the artistic creations of illustrious models gracing runways at New York and Paris fashion weeks for top designers such as Christian Siriano and Anna Sui. They’re also both educators for today’s hottest luxury haircare line, R+Co. But to hear Zoghi tell it, the real magic happens when they bring that experience home to their St. Louis Park salon, a spot she calls a hidden gem. Quietly but surely, the husband-and-wife team has built a devoted following at Revolution, owing to their balance of warm hospitality and style savvy. “I love fashion and travel, but there’s nothing like the relationships you build one-on-one,” she says. “I’ve seen clients’ children from birth all the way through college. There aren’t many professions where you have those kinds of relationships.” There’s also an emphasis on education. Revolution stylists go through an artist studio–style apprenticeship that offers extensive training when they’re hired. “Because we’re so immersed in the culture of education, we feel it’s our duty to bring up the next generation of hairdressers — to continue the craft of hairdressing, not just Instagram hair,” she explains. That includes knockout consults, where clients are assured that their new hairstyle will work for their face and lifestyle, and staying on top of — and interpreting — trends. “We take the experience and inspiration from our travels and bring that back to our salon for our team and clients,” Zoghi notes. And it truly is all about the clients, all the way down to their logo, which puts an emphasis on the letters l-o-v-e. “If one word describes us, it’s love,” she says. “That’s how we feel about our guests: pure love.”

TO BE FRANK SEASONS OF CHANGE I FOUNDED ARTFUL LIVING IN 2008 AND HAVE

served as its publisher ever since. Over the years, I’ve been proud to help create this award-winning independent boutique lifestyle magazine. In today’s fast-paced world, most of us get our news and entertainment from digital media sources. Much of it is bite-sized and curated by our preferences, algorithms, and influences from companies and special interest groups. In contrast, Artful Living is an oversize quarterly magazine intended to delight and inspire. Every issue begins with a remarkable cover, features best-in-class design and paper quality, and is packed with original content for discovery. Print magazines like ours remain a physical and permanent medium where style and substance meet. Like the seasons we experience throughout the year, everything in our lives has its cycles — our relationships, our careers, our interests — and all of that sustains us. However, most things in life have a way of showing us when it’s time to maintain the status quo and when it’s time to move on. Saying goodbye to what we know brings new beginnings, uncertainty, joy and excitement. So, with this transition, I am stepping into a new role as founder and editor-at-large here at Artful Living. The initial idea for this magazine was mine, but today it is delivered to you by a remarkable group of 10 individuals who have created a world-class publication that never before existed in our region. Artful Living turned out beyond my wildest dreams. It has personally offered me the chance to travel the world and connect with countless notable and exceptional personalities. Moreover, it has satisfied my curious mind for seeking out and producing incredible stories that we have been honored to publish. Thank you to our loyal readers who eagerly await each issue and to our dedicated advertisers who underwrite this one-of-a-kind experience. I will continue to champion the brand into its bright future ahead. Cheers to the change of seasons, to closing chapters and to new beginnings. A significant shift in life can bring us a heightened state of awareness in which we are undimmed by familiarity and are set to be transformed into whatever might be next.

Sincerely,

Frank Roffers
