Hippophiles and Summer

H

ippophile is a noun of Greek origin that simply means lover of horses. Equine interests run deep in Minnesota, and we enjoy the ninth largest horse population in the United States. History was written on the back of a horse, and it’s no wonder the equestrian lifestyle inspires modern culture from fashion to design. The face of Polo Ralph Lauren — Nacho Figueras — graces our cover thanks to our own Jackie Morgan, who scored an interview with him along with some incredible images. Garrison Keillor and his home are the main characters of our feature story, which offers a look inside his never-before-published New York City “cabin.” Garrison also contributed to the piece, giving us his take on life in New York. It was Tom Gunkelman who suggested that we cover Keillor’s home. Thanks to Tom, we were granted access and the inspiration for the story. In the middle of this effort, Tom unexpectedly passed away. We feel incredibly indebted and hope you will read our tribute to this icon of interior design on page 59. With this issue we are excited to debut Artful Living Destinations. Moving forward, this recurring department aims to cover the best of New York, Chicago and California’s most travelworthy cities. Residential real estate is the foundation of Artful Living. Lakes Sotheby’s International Realty offers the finest properties and differentiates with agent professionals with an unparalleled level of service. Welcome to the summer issue of Artful Living. n April 21, more than 500 guests celebrated the opening of the new Lakes Sotheby’s International Realty office at the Galleria in Edina. Party attendees toured the beautifully appointed space. Nationally and internationally acclaimed artists’ work was on display courtesy of Griffin Gallery. On site was a Maserati GrandTurismo, which one fortunate guest got to drive for the month of May. Chef Ferris Schiffer of Minikahda Club prepared delectable hors d’oeuvres; the libations for the evening were specialty Prairie Organic vodka martinis. How Wheat It Is A Wisconsin spirits company takes a farm-to-table approach. | by DAVID MAHONEY

T

hough Death’s Door Spirits took its name from the treacherous strait separating Wisconsin’s Door County peninsula and Washington Island, it could just as well have been inspired by the state of agriculture on the island after the demise of potato farming there in the 1970s. But today the island is home to a 1,200-acre organic wheat farm, thanks in part to Death’s Door, which uses the island’s wheat to craft its harvest-dated vodka, gin and un-aged white whiskey. “I wanted to be part of something that people could really get into,” says Death’s Door founder and president Brian Ellison, who originally got involved with wheat farming on Washington Island through his work as an economic development consultant. “And because this is something that people are putting into their bodies, I wanted it to be as pure as possible.” The Madison-based company really walks the locavore walk: Not only does it use Washington Island wheat as raw material for its spirits, it also uses organic malted barley from Chilton, just south of Green Bay. Even the wild juniper berries used to flavor its gin are harvested on Washington Island. About the only thing not local about Death’s Door products is their market: They’ve caught on with discerning mixologists from San Francisco to London.

Once More to the Lake Lola’s Lakehouse offers New England fare in a distinctly Minnesotan setting. | by JOE HART

M RAMSEY ENGLER LTD

innesota summers offer a kaleidoscope of pleasures. Clement days lengthen into long evenings that hum with life. Schedules fill with pleasurable outdoor activities. Yet none is more pleasurable than taking in the delightful aspect of a Minnesota waterway. Indeed, with the state’s 10,000 lakes — a serious underestimate — it’s no wonder pond life takes center stage. Our statewide lake obsession isn’t lost on Irish-born restaurateur Dermot Cowley. In fact, Lola’s Lakehouse, his third establishment, studiously activates the dreams of the nautically inclined. Situated on the banks of Lake Waconia, an hour’s drive from downtown Minneapolis, Cowley’s restaurant features New England boathouse décor, garage doors that open onto a screened deck over the lake, and access by both land and water. The effect is as breezy as a Jimmy Buffett riff. “It makes for a pretty comfortable and easygoing atmosphere,” Cowley says. “On a beautiful summer day, it’s the best of what the Midwest can offer.” Cowley opened Lola’s three years ago, thereby cementing his reputation for facilitating the comfort and charm of foodies. His other establishments — O’Donovan’s Irish Pub in downtown Minneapolis and Jake O’Connor’s Public House in Excelsior — showcase the proud Irish-born immigrant’s roots, with traditional drinks and fare of the Emerald Isle. Lola’s, however, takes its inspiration from this side of the pond. The menu, ably piloted by executive chef Jon Boetel (formerly of Interlachen Country Club), matches the setting shrimp for lobster. Featured New England favorites range from raw oysters to lobster and shrimp pie, with traditional steaks, pastas and upscale burgers rounding out the menu. For Cowley, in spite of the oceanic theme, Lola’s represents a turn toward his adopted home. For one thing, it’s named for his wife; Lola is the pet name for the “Minnesota girl” who lured him to the Midwest. And although he hails from Ireland, “Waconia is my hometown,” he professes. “My kids went to school here. It’s where I find comfort.” At Lola’s, his comfort finds expression for the rest of us. Bright Idea Introducing the world’s first designer low-energy light bulb. | by jackie morgan

PHOTOGRAPHY IAN NOLAN

T

he name Plumen comes from “plume” — the bird’s decorative feather, designed to attract attention to its prowess and beauty. These were the inspiring details guiding London-based boutique electronics brand Hulger to design the Plumen 001, a low-energy light bulb that doesn’t need to be hidden behind a boring utility. “It’s strange that the bulb, an object so synonymous with ideas, is almost entirely absent of imagination,” says Nicolas Roope, cofounder and creative director of Hulger. Making its European debut in 2009, the Plumen 001 gave consumers the opportunity to use an ecological product that also encompassed style and presence. The bulb functions just like any low-energy light bulb (using 80 percent less energy and lasting eight times longer than conventional light bulbs), but it also has the elegance and beauty of a timeless lampshade — the kind once used to cover up bland, dated bulbs. Winner of a 2011 Brit Insurance Design of the Year award, Hulger hopes this designer bulb will inspire people to get creative about lighting and to use less energy while doing so. The Plumen 001 is available for $29.95 at plumenshop.com.

Activewear with Flair Maha Inspired Activewear owner Krista Fragola has mastered studio-to-street chic. | by IVY GRACIE

L

et’s say your day consists of a morning yoga class, a coffee date, running errands and a few casual work meetings. What do you wear? Most of us would probably leave the house in our workout gear and schlep a gym bag packed with something to change into for the rest of the day. But according to Krista Fragola, owner of Maha Inspired Activewear in Wayzata, it doesn’t have to be that cumbersome. “You can pair leggings with a little tank top and sundress,” she asserts. “So you go to Pilates or yoga, you whip off the dress and boom: You’ve got your active clothes.” Fragola has made it her business to find clothing that transitions seamlessly “from studio to street” and stocks her Lake Street boutique with apparel and accessories that cater to the fit-yet-fashionforward crowd. Some of Fragola’s must-haves? Skirted leggings. “Even if people have a great behind, they don’t necessarily want it exposed,” she laughs. “You can dress [skirted leggings] up with a light sweater, a cardigan or a blazer. And they look great with ballet flats.” She says they’re great for working out as well: “I do Pilates in mine all the time.” Fragola’s also got a thing for skorts: “We have skorts for tennis, skorts for running, skorts for just running around town,” she notes. And she adores simple, chameleon-like dresses that can morph from day to night or from sporty to dressy with a few well-chosen accessories. No matter the look, Fragola says the most important thing is pulling it all together. “We like to put people into their artistic fashion zone with their workout wear,” she explains. “Some jewelry, a scarf — if you put a little skirt on with leggings and dress it up with accessories, it makes a world of difference.” Maha hosts in-store yoga classes Monday and Wednesday mornings. Head to mahaactivewear. com for more information, including details about Maha Movement Mondays, when 10 percent of sales are donated to charity.

The nonprofit upholds that astutely chosen motto by offering therapeutic horseback riding and carriage driving to children and adults living with disabilities — from physical to cognitive to emotional and behavioral. As riders learn horsemanship, they typically experience physical benefits, increased confidence, enhanced wellbeing and more. Founded in 1982, We Can Ride operates at four locations across the greater metro area. Serving such a large client base is no easy feat; it’s accomplished with the help of 30-some therapy horses, 600-plus dedicated volunteers, generous donors and a team of enthusiastic employees (including certified instructors and licensed therapists). Taking Shape Cube and dot designs command attention. | by LORI STORM

I

t sounds so simple: cubes and dots. But an inspiring collection from Kale is shaping up to be one of the industry’s most innovative design concepts for the bathroom. It’s known as the Cube & Dot Collection and was developed by well-known Turkish industrial designer Tamer Nakisci. The dynamic tiles and sinks are sold globally; in Minnesota, they’re available exclusively at Uson Design Solutions in International Market Square. “I’ve never seen anything like it before. It’s so unique. It is so flexible and can go a lot of ways,” says Uson managing partner Cem Onbasi. The ceramic wall tiles come in sheets of oversized diamond shapes to form the cube effect, while basic circles are grouped together to make the dots. The collection features white, black and gray tiles with matte or glossy finishes. The set also includes an interesting pattern of dots and cubes available in different colors. These eye-catching patterns can have a 3D effect and can create the illusion of hanging ornaments. While the collection is considered futuristic, it can complement both modern and classic design. With countless options for color, shading, placement and layout, it truly begs for personal expression. “People really want to make their spaces their own,” says Uson sales manager Pam Gilbert. “With the cube, you can change the whole feel of the tile through shading and color. You can do something very geometric or you [can] play off a more traditional design.” According to Uson, pricing is very affordable considering the level of design and customization that goes into the tiles. Steele Fitness brings the Ferrari of exercise equipment brands to the Twin Cities. | by ELIZABETH DEHN

S

teele Fitness has definitely found its stride. There’s the glossy, new 10,000-square-foot flagship in Edina, which feels more like a destination spa than a workout facility. Then there’s the personal trainers who make complimentary house calls. Not to mention the staggering selection of trend-forward activewear and accessories. Now the boutique athletic chain is bringing luxury fitness to the masses with a new retail offering: high-end exercise equipment. But these aren’t just any old stationary bikes. Steele is the first company in North America to carry the coveted Italian line TechnoGym. “It’s the Ferrari of fitness equipment,” says founder Steele Smalley. If these machines could talk, they would purr. The sleek, modern styling, wear-resistant materials and biomechanically precise construction are nothing short of sublime. Every piece — from the Synchro elliptical to the whisper-quiet KINETIC treadmill — is customizable. Among the high-tech options is a Visio touch screen, which looks and operates just like a giant iPad, offering instant access to the Internet, television and any app on your iPhone or iPod thanks to a built-in docking station. Prices start at a cool $7,000. (Recession? What recession?) For a considerably smaller investment, customers can also shop from a large selection of the popular Life Fitness equipment collection. Either way, everyone gets the Steele experience: in-home consultations, white-glove delivery and personal-training sessions to familiarize you with your new toy. The Steele staff will even pack up old equipment and whisk it away. Want to sample the goods before buying? Stop in to any location for a workout. While you’re there, check out the new small-group fitness classes. In typical Steele style, they’re complimentary for all personal-training clients. We have a feeling it’s only the beginning of what this gym can do for you. Visit steelefitness.com for locations and hours of operation.

Coming Up Rosés Sommelier Leslee Miller reveals her unabashed love for the versatile vino.

E

ven though it is considered one of the hottest wines by many of the world’s snobbiest wine connoisseurs, rosé — my favorite color of vino — is still the target of skeptics hung up on the idea that the color pink equates to a sugary, soda-like liquid that only your grandmother will drink. In reality, it is widely acknowledged as one of the most food-friendly categories of wine. And with its range from light pink hues to deep purple tints, rosé is a fabulous alternative for white wine and red wine drinkers alike to try. Whether made utilizing the oldest method of production, saignée — which involves a process that extracts the juice after limited contact with its red grape skins — or its shorthand version of blending red and white juice together, today’s international rosés are simply some of the most quaffable wines to enjoy year-round.

A Few Of My Favorite Rosés Cave de Saumur Rosé Loire, France

Made from the Cab Franc grape, this wine is zippy with hints of bell pepper and vivacious yellow cherry. Available at Surdyk’s.

Vin Gris de Cigare Rosé from Bonny Doom Central Coast, California

This rosé is made from traditional Rhone varietals and is full of ripe strawberry and lush citrus. Delightful! Available at Surdyk’s.

Anne Amie Vineyard’s Midnight Saignée Rosé Willamette Valley, Oregon

A bleed of Pinot Noir, the wine is full of gorgeous, velvety raspberry fruit with a lusciously supple palate. Available at Surdyk’s. Leslee Miller Certified through the International Sommelier Guild and the Court of Master Sommeliers, sommelier Leslee Miller is the owner of Amusée, a full-service wine-consulting firm offering public food and wine classes, in-home tasting parties, corporate events, international winery consulting, cellar management and more.

Cowboys:

Now & Then Reading material for a laid-back summer day | By ALECIA STEVENS

Proudly sold at

I didn’t grow up with horses, but there is something about a cowboy. I bought some red Ralph Lauren cowboy boots in about 1980, took up line dancing and listened only to country music — until more recently, when I started listening to NPR or my Pimsleur Italian language CDs. One of my book selections is a stretch in terms of the “cowboy” theme, but work with me here.

When my friend Carrie handed me this book, she laughed. Well, so has the author — all the way to the bank. Drummond grew up on a golf course in Oklahoma, upper middle class, then went to the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, adopting all the casual coolness of California culture, with more than her share of high heels. She had a boyfriend of four years and could have slid seamlessly into post-college life in San Francisco with him. Then, she met a cowboy when she was home visiting her family. She turned to mush in the presence of his smell, his voice, his body, his Wrangler jeans. This was in the mid-1990s. In 2006, she took up blogging and began to write the story of how they met and fell in love, post by post. Soon enough she had a super-sized following of obviously under-romanced readers. At the story’s midpoint, she decided to turn it into a book, and the rest is some kind of crazy blogging history. She became Wonder Woman. Her blog now includes her recipes (Yes, she has a cookbook!), her photography, her musings about homeschooling her four children and always images of her cute husband in his chaps. She’s not going to win a Pulitzer for her writing, but her aim is true and the story is great for the beach or the cabin. thepioneerwoman.com.

always ask the owners of Madden’s what it’s like to be the mayor of a town,” says Mitchell Wherley, owner of Spalon Montage. “Because that’s how it feels — like a mini city. The offerings are so diverse, from three extremely challenging golf courses to amazing restaurants, and now a luxury salon and spa.” After getting to know the different resorts in the Brainerd area, Wherley decided Madden’s on Gull Lake and Spalon Montage would complement each other perfectly. Spalon opened its newest spa at Madden’s this spring, creating a menu of treatments exclusive to the resort, including spa packages named after their golf courses. The salon is contemporary in design but also soft and comfortable, with smooth and tranquil fabrics and fireplaces. You can escape to the adjacent cabin for private couple’s massages or indulge in the serenity of an outdoor massage in the new all-weather cabana. Arouse your senses with the smell of fresh air, the sound of light rain and the soothing relief of a massage. Pamper yourself with massages, facial treatments, manicures, spa pedicures and much more, all with beautiful northern Minnesota as your backdrop. 1. Going Ultra-Luxe

3. Upbeat Florals

5. Edgy Rugs

Why I Love It: Some designers embrace a less-is-more aesthetic. That can be lovely, but I also like to be a little sinful — as in the more yards of gorgeous, decadent fabric, the better. It’s akin to lining your floors with furs or wearing a 25-carat diamond. It’s naughty in that triple-scoop-of-ice-cream kind of way. GET THE LOOK: Viscose and silk Josephine velvet print in pewter by Schumacher

Why I Love It: I enjoy floral patterns that are articulated with a crisp, modern edge. It’s what makes the pattern so lively and the fabrics remarkably easy to work with. GET THE LOOK: Flocked Bed of Roses fabric by Rodolph in oasis green color way

Why I Love It: The longer I work in design, the more possibilities I see. This rug is a great example of an envelope-pushing design that could be truly amazing in the right environment. I see this rug with a dynamic wallpaper, vintage furniture, various carved and painted case pieces. It’s a risky piece, but isn’t that part of the fun? GET THE LOOK: Tibetan wool Clock rug by Sue Timney for The Rug Company

2. Playful, Patterned Leather Why I Love It: Leather vendors have really loosened up in the past five years, and I love the results. This option is particularly marvelous, with its dynamic, circular pattern and interesting indigo color. I would love to see some wall panels upholstered with this! GET THE LOOK: Fossil nubuck cowhide by Townsend Leather in twilight

4. Lighting as Sculpture Why I Love It: I love functional pieces that are works of art in their own right. This table lamp from Porta Romana is a terrific example: The two-arm form makes the lamp seem dimensional and freeform. And there’s an artful blending of materials: the pale gold armature, the satin shade, the dark-stained wood base. Each part of the lamp expresses elegance. 6. Updated Damasks Why I Love It: The damask pattern is so traditional it verges on stuffy. For some of my clients, the damask reminds them of the off-limits formal living room at Grandma’s house. But now manufacturers are imparting a modernist hand with damasks, dipping the classic pattern in saturated color ways. GET THE LOOK: Florentine damask tapestry by Aubry Angelo, Limited

1. Iron Chandeliers with Italiana Why I Love It: I’m attracted to the contrast of raw, masculine wrought iron forged with graceful, neoclassical curves. The impression is refined but still friendly. GET THE LOOK: 20-pound Gramercy chandelier by Currey & Company with blacksmithed iron bands

2. Greenery Accents with Depth Why I Love It: Every home needs a bit of the outdoors expressed indoors. And the color green works in any room because we see shades of it all around us — well, part of the year, anyway! I like this piece because it makes me think of a sculpted haircut gone wild. GET THE LOOK: Orbs and grass accent bowl by Lux-Art Silks

3. Unexpected Graphics Why I Love It: The best interior design has a little something unexpected. This pillow

2

3

5

6

serves that job well because the birds are proportionally too large for the size of the pillow, which is pleasing and surprising to our senses. It’s a graphic trick, but one that works. GET THE LOOK: Organic cotton Two Birds throw pillow by Design Legacy, printed with natural dyes

4. Case Pieces with Personality Why I Love It: I love gorgeous furniture with a sense of intrigue. This piece is so eye-catching with its classic rectangular body, diamondpattern inlay and — wow! — shiny aluminum cabriole legs below. This piece demands to be the center of attention. GET THE LOOK: Nice Legs closed-door wine storage cabinet by Caracole Home

5. Sculpted Demilunes Why I Love It: Demilunes are marvelous because they can be used to display delicate collections, often make a nice focal points

in hallways or foyers, and, when need be, can stand in as stylish serving buffets. I’m particularly enamored with this one because the finish on the wood looks very fresh and would brighten up most any setting. GET THE LOOK: Two-door Outside-In demilune by Schnadig with grey-over-white finish and zinc-finished door wires

6. Old-Fashioned Accents Why I Love It: The best pieces of furniture are multi-functional and made well with sturdy, stunning materials. This little table rises admirably to the occasion with its marble top and curvy, metal base. It reminds me of my grandmother’s sewing machine; it’s old-fashioned in the best sense of the word. I can see it as a nightstand, an end table in a sun room or an accent in a coastal-inspired living room. GET THE LOOK: Outside-In potting table by Schnadig with alabaster marble top and galvanized metal base

Heirlooms by Design Experts in antique American furniture and art, the Keno brothers have created a line of modern-day collectibles for the home. | by IVY GRACIE

W

hat do you do after you’ve risen to the top of your field, authored a book, become the darlings of one hit TV show and launched another? If you’re Leigh and Leslie Keno, you start your own furniture line. Unlike other well-known siblings whose last names begin with “k,” the Keno brothers have the credentials to back up their business ventures. Leslie’s resumé boasts more than 30 years at Sotheby’s, where he is senior vice president and director of American furniture and decorative arts. Leigh served as vice president of appraisals at Christie’s, in 1986 opened his own gallery featuring American furniture and decorative arts from the 18th to 20th centuries, and founded Keno Auctions in 2009. Together the pair authored the book Hidden Treasures: Searching for Masterpieces of American Furniture; currently they serve as editors-at-large for Traditional Home magazine. And this fall they will launch a TV show on FOX called Buried Treasure. But the identical twins are probably best known for their regular appearances as appraisers on the long-running PBS hit Antiques Roadshow, where they have endeared themselves to millions of

viewers. With a modern-day mix of Noel Coward-esque eloquence and Cole Porter-like wit, they exude an unabashedly genuine passion for high-quality furnishings and art that is simultaneously infectious and inspirational. The brothers brought their inimitable breed of enthusiasm to the Twin Cities in May as part of a nationwide tour to introduce their aptly named Keno Bros. furniture collection. And, not surprisingly, each venue was filled with followers — first at Gabbert’s in Edina for a presentation to the public and then at an event for interior designers hosted by Duxbury, Ltd. at International Market Square. At both affairs, the pair deftly wove history and humor into soft sales pitches while they showcased their wares. “We loved stoneware jugs,” Leigh noted, recalling one of the pair’s youthful forays into collecting. “The curves were just amazing. Then we found out there were curves in girls — they were much nicer to hold.” As the crowd tittered, he delivered the real punch line: “Our line is based on the curves in the human body. You can see them throughout our furniture.” Like many identical twins, the Keno brothers mirror each other in appearance, gestures and speech patterns. And they finish each other’s sentences almost unconsciously, one gently touching the other’s shoulder or elbow as he elaborated on a thought the other had begun. “We’ve always had a dream of making our own furniture,” Leslie began as he told of the pair’s venture into furniture design. “All throughout our careers we’d see a chair or a table and say, ‘I wish the leg was a little more curved,’ or, ‘I wish that the back was taller.’ ” Leigh tapped Leslie’s shoulder and continued: “We were down at

High Point [in North Carolina], and we walked into the Theodore Alexander display and saw this incredibly crafted Goddard Townsend piece carved just like the 18th-century original.” “I had just sold the original for $8.5 million at auction,” Leslie explained, his words almost overlapped his brother’s. “We decided right there that the craftsmanship was such that we could do anything with this company,” Leigh finished the narrative. Since that day, the Keno brothers have been collaborating with Theodore Alexander to cultivate a collection that reflects their love of natural forms and materials. They’ve based their designs on the s-curve, a serpentine line used to depict the human form in art (and in their beloved stoneware jugs). They’ve chosen unique woods like striated ofram; delicate, blond sycamore; rich, black anegre; and kaleidoscopic olive ash burl. And they’ve capitalized on the craftsmanship at Theodore Alexander to create chairs, tables and storage pieces that are as sculptural as they are functional. Thanks to a lifetime of experience in art, furnishings and history, the Keno brothers’ exposure to, knowledge of and eye for enduring style is unsurpassed. And it translates into their furniture. “It comes down to beautiful forms and proportions,” Leslie explained. “We’ve made pieces that we want to live with in our own homes. They’re simple so they don’t clash with other pieces, yet they are works of art themselves.” “Our goal is to have these pieces be the heirlooms of the future,” Leigh completed the thought. “And to be appraised on Antiques Roadshow 300 years from now.”

The Not So Wild West Home on the range takes on new meaning. |

L

et’s face it — times have changed. Not so long ago, one would have saddled up the horses, packed the blanket roll, canteen and some grub, and trekked up the mountain to a “little cabin in the woods.” Giddyup! Nowadays the trailblazers hop off their private jets, load up the Land Rover and muscle up the mountain to a home on the range with a whole new twist. At first glance, this home seems over the top. But, in fact, it is a retreat for a large family to come together and share

The Great Room

Whether you are reclined on the birch bark–framed day bed or are entertaining a large group, the combination of natural materials — the moss-stone fireplace, nubuckcovered wing chairs and the 7-footround alder-branch coffee table — surrounds you with organic bliss.

the important things in life: loved ones, fine food and an opportunity to take in nature’s abundant beauty. Considering the closest I got to this experience while growing up was having cowboy-and-Indian wallpaper in my bedroom, I’m a lucky guy. I seem to attract kind, intelligent, fun-loving people who are in a position to reap the benefits of years of hard work and great vision in business and life. Ultimately this allows them to create the ideal oasis to celebrate life.

In the mood for a fabulous Burgundy? Walk across the stepping stone as the waterfall stops and enter the rustic wine cellar.

The Hearth Room

The spirit of the old West is captured by the antique wagon-wheel chandeliers with sheepskin shades and the reclaimed barn-wood walls and ceilings. The stack-stone fireplace creates a cozy nook to rock the night away.

The Lounge

Texture rules this room to create an intimate hideaway. The russet suede-upholstered furniture reflects one of the dominant colors of the Rockies. A crude stone fireplace wall is the background for the custom needlepoint aspentree tapestries. The one-of-a-kind pie-shaped coffee table bridges the conversation grouping.

The Theater

Even movie night reflects the Wild West. Upholstered walls in red wool flannel are backed with acoustical panels. Vintage Western posters were enlarged and printed on speaker cloth to conceal the sound system. The comfort of the cowhide-patterned, ultra-suede theater seats makes you want to stay for a double feature.

The Kitchen

The kitchen, complete with a personal chef and every amenity imaginable, is the heartbeat of this retreat. The blending of materials and finishes — cowboy boot leather–upholstered barstools, an aged copper hood, a stone pizza oven and highlights of stainless steel — creates a warm richness.

arrison Keillor’s real life happens in St. Paul. The Saintly City is where he built his livelihood, his persona, his celebrity and his celebrated radio show. St. Paul is where his daughter, Maia, goes to school. It’s where he founded his quaint bookstore, Common Good Books, and where, in 2006, he led a denizen of Hollywood celebrities down Wabasha Street — Woody Harrelson, Meryl Streep and Lindsay Lohan among them — in support of the Robert Altman-directed film A Prairie Home Companion. St. Paul is home, but it’s also work. “St. Paul is where I have a schedule, it’s where I’m jumping in a car tearing off someplace and I’m 15 minutes late,” says Keillor. “St. Paul is getting up by 6:30 in the morning and being out the door no later than a quarter after 7.” St. Paul is also the place where he is universally recognized, with his tall frame, wispy mane and rumbling baritone that seems to be on the cusp always of saying “It’s been a quiet week in Lake Wobegon…” And so when Garrison Keillor and his wife, Jenny Lind Nilsson, want to sneak off into blessed anonymity, they go to their co-op condo in New York City, in the historic Eldorado building on Central Park West. Keillor calls it his “Minnesota lake place,” though the closest thing it has to a lake view is a slice of green trees peeking out from Central Park. “Some Minnesotans drive two hours to their cabin. We just happen to take an airplane,” says Keillor.

He first bought the Eldorado condo back in 1988, when he was married to his second wife, a Danish woman named Ulla Skaerved, who was giddy about the idea of a New York apartment with a decadent terrace. “The real-estate person was a little surprised because that’s not an easy thing necessarily to find,” recalls Keillor. But they found exactly what they were looking for: an art-deco building with tall, pre-war ceilings, original tile, a stately lobby and, yes, a truly outstanding terrace overlooking Central Park West. It was a fine apartment, but the marriage did not last. And for a variety of reasons, not the least of which was the fact that Keillor was soon to be married to his new love, the pre-war apartment with the big terrace was sold in 1994. For more than a decade, Garrison Keillor lived away from the Eldorado, taking up residence with Nilsson at 90th Street and West End Avenue, and then later, at 90th Street and Riverside. But he thought of the old place, with the muraled lobby, the architecture, that terrace. “We were spending more time in New York, we wanted more space and we thought, ‘Why not?’ ” When he went back to visit after more than 10 years, the doorman said, without batting an eye, “Good to see you again, Mr. Keillor.” The apartment was virtually untouched, as if it had been padded with mothballs the entire decade. But that was itself a kind of design challenge. This was, after all, the place where Keillor had lived with his previous wife. Keillor and Nilsson, a professional violinist, put the delicate task to interior designers Tom Gunkelman and Karen McKay, whom they had previously entrusted with not one but two St. Paul homes, as well as the Riverside apartment in New York. Gunkelman, who passed away in May, took to the project with gusto, first having the blonde wood floors stained mocha brown. “That was an amazing psychological change,” says Keillor. “The

The Mural at the Eldorado

“In the lobby of our building is a mural of the Golden City of El Dorado, like what Edgar Allen Poe wrote about in his poem. The mural shows people crossing a great arched bridge into a gold-dusted city of fabulous wealth, and was completed in 1931, when it must have seemed a great irony to the building’s investors. The apartments in the building are nice, but they are hardly opulent. I suppose the mural was painted to give the tenants a sense of opulence, and it does work for me.”

The Lake Painting

“In reality, this is an 1893 painting of a sea inlet at the Danish island Fyn, done by Peder Monsted, one of the painters of the Danish Golden Age. But in my mind, it’s really a painting of a Minnesota lake, surrounded by balsam and spruce. And it hangs in our lake place up in the air.”

mementos The main living room includes many private mementos including a violet glass art vessel Nilsson gifted to her husband and a painting by Peder Mork Monsted that reminds Garrison of Minnesota. The calligraphy brush set on the coffee table was a gift from Tom Gunkelman, the late, great interior designer. 64 Artful Living

Our Navajo Blanket

Soon after we met, Jenny and I took a car trip and bought together this Navajo blanket that was made in about 1900, when the tribe was first starting to make things for the tourist trade. The colors are very fine — golds, oranges, reds and yellows.

Industrial Cupboards

“The cupboards were original to the apartment, but they were painted. And so we had all the paint chipped off and the stainless steel surface cleaned. It’s a small kitchen, a little, smart galley, and cupboards make it feel like the dining car on a train.”

memories of having lived here before were suddenly not so vivid.” To that slate, McKay and Gunkelman added a program of formal, sophisticated furniture, including a linen-upholstered Saladino day bed with a cowboy roll of ivory boucle and an Andre Arbus armchair covered in plush, heathered boucle from Knoll. Textures, rather than color, create the interest here, with cotton, silk, wool, limousine cloth, marble, glass, linen, raw wood, lacquer and bronze all playing together in the same room. “Garrison and Jenny like a casual, collected look in St. Paul,” says McKay. “For the New York place, we went for something a little more refined.” The most St. Paul-ish space is the adjacent family room, where a 100-year-old Navajo blanket the couple picked up on a road trip holds center stage. This, says Keillor, is where the wallflowers congregate during parties and where 13-year-old Maia likes to play around on her mom’s laptop. Life in New York has a markedly different rhythm. Keillor spends a lot of time writing and reading, taking strolls through Central Park and hanging out in the main reading room of the public library, where he is almost never recognized. Mother and daughter go to MOMA and the Met, and then order takeout from Citarella and Zabar’s. “When I cook, we sort of become circumstantial vegetarians,” says Nilsson sheepishly. “I have a destructive way with meat.” Nilsson and Keillor can easily entertain themselves for hours with New York people-watching. “There’s a guy who likes to cook in his underwear,” Nilsson says. “I’ve taken to calling him Russ.” It’s not exactly rustic, with more than 30 Starbucks coffee shops within walking distance of the building. But for this Minnesota family, it’s exactly the cabin they need.

When I came to New York in the summer of 1966, I had no money at all and no great prospects for a job, but I sat in the reading room of the public library and for some reason, felt hope. Now I sit among the long, oak tables and the green, glass-shaded library lamps, with all the people on their laptops or with their legal pads, and I’m just one more writer in a big room full of people doing pretty much the same thing.

I’m trying to cut down on pastries, but you may find that if you trek all the way up the hill from Central Park West to Broadway, and over to Zabar’s cafe, you will have earned a pastry. It is, after all, a very long way.

Central Park Bridle Path

Only about three years ago, they closed the last horse stable, so there are no more horses around Central Park, and we do miss the sound of horse hooves. But the Bridle Path is still here — the little dirt path the horses once used, still covered by a canopy of trees. The ground is rough and ambling, and it’s this amazing, hidden, mysterious piece of rustic right in the heart of the busiest city in America.

PHOTOGRAPHY GEORGE BARBERIS

I

first saw New York as an 11-year-old, accompanying my father, who was driving a brand-new 1953 Pontiac to Brooklyn to put aboard a ship to Germany, and he and I went around to Coney Island and Ebbets Field and the Empire State and the Statue of Liberty. But what was most thrilling and memorable to me, a country kid, was the street life: the tumult of talk, all the different languages, the gesturing, the interesting faces everywhere you looked. I came back when I was 24, hoping to get a job at The New Yorker, and spent four weeks living in a boarding house on West 19th that was run by Marion Tanner, the aunt of Patrick Dennis, who wrote Auntie Mame, and finally gave up on the idea of living in the city — Minnesota seemed like a better place in which to be poor — and that was that. I started writing for The New Yorker when I was 27 and made regular trips to the city to see my editor, Roger Angell, a native Manhattanite, and watched him closely to pick up his New York style. I bought this apartment when I wound up A Prairie Home Companion in 1987 and renovated it, sold it in 1994 and bought it back in 2006. I’m a different person in New York — a bystander, an observer, rather removed and remote. In St. Paul I feel like a citizen with definite responsibilities, and in New York I’m a visitor. Not many people know me here. I don’t belong to anything. Nobody expects anything of me. It’s very quiet on the 12th floor. I love to sit up here and write. When I’m here alone, I can go for days without seeing people except the ones I pass on the street. It’s very monastic. But it’s also a fine place to entertain friends from the Midwest who want to see the big city. I’ve sat in that living room for hours and hours reminiscing about Anoka and the Sanctified Brethren and the University of Minnesota in the ’60s and the battles in the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party and so forth. Those are subjects that matter to me. I don’t care two cents worth about the Knicks or Yankees, Donald Trump, Giuliani, bike lanes in Manhattan, the future of Broadway, or the merits of private schools and the great lengths to which people go to gain admission for their kids. Not of interest. But I’ve sat here and talked for hours about life along the Mississippi River when I was a boy. The décor may be New York, but the talk is all Minnesota.

elcome to horse country, otherwise known as the Olmanson home. The interiors of the sprawling Medina property are chock-full of equestrian-themed décor. Just about every room has something horse-related, from commanding artwork to authentic riding gear to antique racing trophies. The family of seven shares a deep love of animals and wanted its home to reflect that passion. “My husband grew up around horses, and I’ve always loved them. They’re just so majestic,” says Cindy Olmanson. “We have paintings and prints of English riding horses, hitching posts and polo gear. We have done a lot of collecting on our travels, and we wanted to create that comfortable equestrian feel at home.” To showcase both the eclectic and the elegant, they turned the reins over to Bruce Kading, owner and principal of Bruce Kading Interior Design. The English manor–style home with Tudor elements and a country setting provided plenty of inspiration. “It’s always appeared to me that it should be in Lexington, Kentucky, because of the rolling lawn out in front and the wonderful bricks and dark trim,” Kading recalls. Building on the horse theme, Kading presented a palette, fabrics, furniture and art that embraced the Ralph Lauren style. He started with rich reds and greens, but chose muted tones to make the colors appear more earthy. To add depth, he layered pattern on pattern for wall coverings and furniture. “I wanted it to have a timeless quality about it,” he explains. “The look is worn, but not worn out. It has a real town-and-country feel. It’s very elegant, but it’s also casual and warm. It invites you in.” The talented designer also played with texture. He mixed everything from animal hides and chenille to damask and pieces of cut velvet. “It’s like putting jeans together with a silk blouse: It’s dressed

up and dressed down at the same time. That’s the best way I can describe casual elegance,” Kading says. Instead of limiting the number of equine pieces, Kading actually encouraged Olmanson to hunt for more. The designer then corralled the collectibles, such as polo mallets and crops, into different areas where they would have the greatest impact. One of Kading’s crowning achievements: a dynamic display in the family room. The fireplace mantel is covered with clusters of antique trophies “We have done a lot of in different sizes with varying levels of patina. collecting on our travels, and “Bruce was my we wanted to create that inspiration. I had a huge oil painting of a horse above comfortable equestrian feel the fireplace, but I wasn’t at home.”—CINDY OLMANSON sure how to complete the mantel. He started grouping my trophies and said it would be fun to go out and get more,” Olmanson says. “The result is just stunning.” Kading says part of the trick to designing the home was to balance the horse décor with other themes. “It wasn’t just all horses. We were able to mix it around. Cindy also loves dogs and has a collection of porcelain blue and white vases,” Kading explains. “You certainly could overdue the whole horse thing, but I don’t think we ever got to that point.” Olmanson says it’s only a matter of time before her family owns a real horse. Until then, she’ll just keep adding to her collection. “I never get tired of seeing the pictures and collections in my house. It’s hard to say I’ve got enough. Either I’m upgrading or switching out things. At some point I’ll be done, but not yet.”

West Isles Story A formal beauty meets everyday family spaces. |

T

here are two stories behind every home remodel or building project. There’s the nuts-and-bolts project story, and there’s the human story — the story of how dreams meshed with budgets and schedules. Days of excitement followed by days of weariness. Of construction crews framing up walls while Mom buzzes past, trying to find snow boots for the kids. It’s a story of trust, collaboration and trying to make a home-cooked meal while the kitchen is torn apart. Ultimately, it’s the story of the relationship between homeowner and builder, a relationship that can stretch over months. Or, in the case of this gorgeous West Isles home, the builder is invited back for additional projects and the relationship continues for years. We love stories like this one, where the human side and the project side work out beautifully.

a romantic remodeling

by CAROLYN CROOKE

At the beginning, this red brick Georgian home was composed mostly of gorgeous formal spaces: a lavish dining room, a stunning foyer with a wrapping staircase, a formal living room, a study and more. What it didn’t have were everyday living spaces. Enter Joe Metzler of Sala Architects. Hired by the homeowners, Metzler designed an entire back wing for casual family living. The plans called for a three-story addition featuring a new kitchen, family area, mudroom, kid’s bath, laundry room, child’s bedroom and lower-level gym. The homeowners chose Vujovich Design Build to bring those plans to life. As a design-build firm, Vujovich handles everything from the design to the building, or, in cases like this, partners with an outside architect. “We love working with Joe. He does amazing period work,” says Vujovich sales and design manager Beth Malmberg. “And I like the trust factor: He knows how far he needs

This three-story addition that juts out from the main house created generous family spaces: a mud room, bathroom, family area, laundry room, child’s bedroom and lower-level gym. The Vujovich team worked with the architect and specialized suppliers to match the original construction in everything from the brick patterns to the stone lintels under windows and the gutters.

to take the drawings, and he knows that we can make his plans work. We both have a certain expectation of integrity.” The Vujovich team sat down with the homeowners to discuss executing Metzler’s plans while staying on budget. Their approach to a project of this size involves spreadsheets that track fixtures and finishes as well as a scope-of-work document minutely detailing out plans for each room, right down to paint and trim profiles. And there are prices. “We keep the homeowner in the driver’s seat by being realistic with numbers from the beginning,” Malmberg says. “A round of numbers comes with each new round of plans. During the first round, those might be ranges, but as things get more defined, the bids get exact, so that the homeowner can make choices. Our most successful projects are where we truly collaborate and understand how the client is framing their priorities, and we provide our expertise and information.” For Vujovich, “being realistic” extends even to the emotional peaks and valleys homeowners typically feel during building projects. To prepare people, the firm shows homeowners a graph of typical homeowner emotions during a project — the

functional, family space

“enthusiasm curve.” Enthusiasm generally soars when a homeowner chooses a builder, when design starts and again when construction begins. “But the first few days can be loud,” Malmberg notes. “That’s when no one can find their hats and mittens, and the dog is upset. We like to talk about that sort of thing.” She describes how emotions typically bounce around until the end, when they soar anew. That’s when it’s all worth it. “We had a very comfortable working relationship with this client,” Malmberg says. “We were in tune with what they needed, and they knew what to expect.” This was important because of the many complex aspects of the project. For example, when the lavish, formal gardens had to be dug up to get excavators in and later recreated. Or when the 3,500-pound indoor resistance pool had to be craned up past mature oak trees and down into its conditioned basement space. But today, these homeowners are getting tremendous use out of the addition. “This is the hub,” Malmberg notes. “They come into this beautiful, high-functioning space, and this is home. It was all worth it.”

Generous window wells flood the new lower-level gym with natural light. This active family has embraced their new spaces, especially the chlorine-free resistance pool. RIGHT The kitchen was enlarged to include more workspace and a dining area. Don’t be deceived by the period beauty; this space is sophisticated and functional. LEFT

Urban Retreat Minutes from the city, this former resort on the St. Croix offers a private parkland. | by JOE HART

I

t’s the tail end of a mild, early summer afternoon. Sunshine filters through oak and aspen as Bob Rolle walks a well-trodden trail through Illwaco Springs — the storied acres of what was once an exclusive, sylvan resort on the Wisconsin side of the St. Croix River. “It’s a unique property with an unusual history,” says Rolle. “There’s really nothing else like it on the lower river.” For starters, there’s its size: The wedge-shaped 30 acres provide one of the largest private shorelines on the river. The land itself is a park-like retreat, forested with mature woods. Its soil is thin; here and there the trees are interrupted by limestone bedrock that juts upward to form remarkable miniature bluffs. Wildlife is legion; Rolle spent one winter observing a coyote that had taken over an ice cave

as a cold-weather shelter for herself and her cub. Across the river lies Minnesota’s Afton State Park, leaving night skies dark and heightening the sense of privacy. It was perhaps these characteristics that inspired the establishment of the Illwaco Springs resort at the turn of the last century. According to Rolle’s research, the Gilded Age pleasure park was founded by the daughter of a pair of illustrious, local landowners and offered cultured guests an Elysian escape from the cares of the city. The guest cabins were fed by one of several springs on the property; for a time, water was bottled and sold. Today, a pair of cabins from the “It’s something special to Illwaco Springs resort remains live in a place with such an standing, as does interesting history.”—BOB ROLLE a boathouse — one of only a handful on the river — which is protected from current regulations against boathouses by a grandfather clause. Above the cabins and set back from the bluff is the house Rolle and his wife, Susan, designed and built for the site. It’s a well-proportioned home styled as an English country house, Susan explains. The west-facing façade overlooks the river with a series of stepped windows that shows off the stunning views; French doors open onto three decks. The southern end of the home features a cozy, glassed-in library with stately built-ins and recessed window seats designed and constructed by a local craftsman. “It’s something special to live in a place with such an interesting history,” says Bob of the park-like setting less than 40 minutes from the heart of the Twin Cities. “For a natural, river environment, the only thing [that would] compare would be going to a state park.”

Upstairs, a mezzanine overlooks the living room and leads to a bedroom, bath and bonus room. And a dedicated office space with a Juliet balcony overlooking the lake could entice even those with the strongest work ethic to steal away for an hour on the water. The home’s lower level offers the escape route. There, a sprawling living space with 12-foot-high ceilings belies its semi-subterranean location thanks to warm, white-oak flooring and ample light. Outside, a veranda with electronically controlled retractable screens abuts the nearly one-acre yard that was professionally landscaped by Gray Gardens. Shorewood, MN Asking price: $2,250,000 Two-Story Home 4 bedroom | 5 bath | 4-Car garage Built in 2002 .93 Acre Lot This property is for sale. Contact Smith + Roffers with Lakes Sotheby’s International Realty for more information 612-867-5667.

“This is a premier waterskiing area,” the owners proclaim. “There’s a ridge over 100 feet high on one side that creates a barrier against crosswinds, so there can be whitecaps on Lake Minnetonka while the surface of Christmas Lake is like glass.” True water-sports enthusiasts, the owners designed their home to accommodate lake life efficiently as well as aesthetically. “If you’re on a lake, you need storage,” they explain. To that end, they flanked the lower level with two expansive storage spaces, accessible from inside and out, to shelter water toys, boat accessories, patio furniture and miscellany.

ample accommodations

The home also features two additional bedrooms, three additional bathrooms, a gym, main-floor and lower-level laundry rooms, and a well-equipped butler’s pantry. With more than 6,000 square feet of interior living space, four garage stalls and almost 1,200 square feet of dedicated storage, the home captures the best of life in the islands while adopting the laid-back lifestyle that characterizes Christmas Lake. “It’s a friendly lake where people dock at their neighbor’s for a lemonade or an impromptu barbecue,” say the owners. “There’s a sense of community here.”

The lower level boasts a kitchen-sized wet bar and light hardwood floors. BOTTOM LEFT The lower level’s high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows give it a light, open feeling. TOP RIGHT Ample space, dual pedestal sinks, an oversized soaking tub and a separate dual-head shower in the master bath make for a stylish retreat. Sweet Sunshine Days Winter seemed especially long this year, didn’t it? As winter draws to a close, our vitamin D levels typically reach their lowest levels leading to seasonal depression, difficulty sleeping, recurring sore throats, muscle aches, headaches and general malaise. Sound familiar? | Chef Rebecca Irey Now finally spring is full swing! Every day begins earlier, brighter and more lovely. Did you know each sweet sunshine day can contribute to radiant health all year round? More sun equals higher levels of a spectacular little thing called vitamin D. The benefits of this miracle mineral abound! Vitamin D is fat soluble which means that a mere 20 minutes out in the beautiful sunshine will be stored in your cells until those chilly winter days return and you truly need it. Yay!

West Edina | Mirror Lake

Recent studies show that vitamin D will improve your mood, metabolism and better yet it is the crucial element needed for proper absorption of calcium! There is also evidence that Vitamin D plays a role in strong immunity - a healthy, strong body which can result in a happier, clearer mind. Ever wondered why spring makes us smile? Now you know! Another sweet side effect of vitamin D is a glowing complexion – a healthy radiance enhanced by soft, smooth skin and reduced wrinkles. Who can argue with that?

12 to 24 Month Lease Term Premier Lakeside Home Overlooking Lake & Interlachen Golf Course Available Immediately.

Stuck inside working? No worries - get your sunshine in a glass. One cup of fresh orange juice can contain over 100 IU of vitamin D; over half of the recommended daily allowance. Check out Pure Market Express Drop of Sunshine juice – a sweet combination of orange, grapefruit and pineapple to enhance your summer glow and keep it all year through.

The Life Equestrian Four accomplished riders share stories of their times in the saddle. |

By KATE NELSON

Dave Allen, 30 Polo:

a game played by two teams of players on horseback who are equipped with long-handled mallets for driving a small, wooden ball through the opponents’ goal Dave Allen has been playing polo for 16 years, 6 of those with Twin City Polo Club. With a +2 handicap, the Iowa transport is one of the club’s power players and has been on the winning Twin City Polo Classic team three times. For Allen, the sport has been a family affair from the very start. Artful Living: What drew you to polo? Dave Allen: I grew up [near] Des Moines, and my Dad bought our first horse when I was 9. Some friends of his played [polo], and it didn’t take long for him to follow suit, which left my brother and me grooming for him. Sometimes after practices — if we were good — the kids would get to ride on the field and take our shot at hitting the ball around. [Soon] we were included as additional or substitute players for practices, which turned into games, which turned into full tournaments. By 14, I was a full member of the United States Polo Association. AL: Tell us about the polo ponies. DA: A polo pony is like the Ferrari of horses: They stop and turn like a barrel horse, they run as fast as a racehorse and they push other horses out of their way like a cattle horse pushes cows. These horses are athletes just like the players, and they enjoy doing what they do. AL: Describe the feeling when you’re on horseback. DA: It is easily one of the longest and most intense adrenaline rushes I’ve ever experienced — running flat out, wide open, as fast as the horse can move, chasing down an opponent going equally as fast and having to lean forward to where the only thing between you and the ground is your horse’s neck while reaching a 52-inch mallet out to attempt to spoil [the other player’s] shot. If one little thing goes awry, you’re done. You have to have a lot of guts and an incredible amount of faith in your horses.

since 2005.

Tim McQuay, 59 Reining:

A Western riding competition in which a rider guides his horse through a precise pattern of circles, spins and stops. You can’t talk reining without talking about legend Tim McQuay. He has been a trailblazer in the industry for decades. After 37 years in the Twin Cities, he headed south to Tioga, Texas, where he and wife Colleen now run McQuay Stables, a training and breeding facility that combines their passions: reining and hunter/jumper. AL: Describe reining in 50 words or less. TM: It’s kind of like figure skating on a horse. We do sliding stops; spins; fast, large circles; small, slow circles; figure eights; flying lead changes. AL: Tell us about your philosophy to put the horse first. TM: At our place, we ride and train about 70 horses a day. We work together on everything. Colleen and I feel that a sound horse is a happy horse. I personally have trouble training a horse that I feel is sore. If a horse feels sore, the first thing I do is ask my vet to look at him. If he thinks [the horse is OK], I keep training.

Barrel racing:

a rodeo event in which a horse and rider attempt to complete a cloverleaf pattern around preset barrels in the fastest time

Minnesota native Heidi Meuwissen got her start in barrel racing at the tender age of 12. She has numerous victories on the high-school rodeo circuit to her name as well as pro accolades, including a highly coveted round win at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. She splits her time between her home state and Texas as a sales rep for Cokato-based clothing company Cowgirl Tuff Co. AL: How did you get started in barrel racing? HM: I started riding on my grandparents’ farm. When they passed away when I was 9, the horses came to our house in Excelsior. My dad’s rule was that if it didn’t take gas, it wasn’t going to be at our house. My mom convinced him to let us have them as long as my brother and I took care of the chores. My parents started taking me to Minnetonka Horsemen when I was 10. That’s where I realized I wanted to focus on barrel racing. I started taking lessons and eventually got into the high-school rodeo circuit. AL: Tell us about George, the horse you learned to run barrels on. HM: George was a once-in-a-lifetime horse. He was extremely automatic and a great teacher. AL: What’s your proudest accomplishment? HM: My horse Bull, a former racehorse who ran at Canterbury, was my green light into pro rodeos. Winning go-rounds on him at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo in 2007 was a huge accomplishment. Two years later, I ended up winning enough money to get into Houston, but Bull was hurt. A great mentor of mine, Maren Luedemann — the person who helped me go pro in 2002 — lent me her horse, and I ended up winning a round on him.

AL: You have some amazing accolades under your belt: first-ever $2-million rider in National Reining Horse Association history; five-time All American Quarter Horse Congress Futurity Champion; four-time Southwest Reining Horse Association Futurity Champion; and two-time NRHA Futurity Champion — with the second win at age 56. What’s your most memorable accomplishment? TM: The best thing has been my family — Colleen, [daughter] Mandy, [son-in-law] Tom and my grandchildren, Cade and Carlee. All of the things we have been able to do are sometimes unbelievable to me, from my show record to what our breeding stallions have done and are doing. The accomplishments my family has been able to [achieve] have been great, from Colleen’s championships to what Mandy has done to be the first nonpro to win more than $1 million to [my career].

Nick Novak, 53 Hunter/jumper:

An event in which horse and rider jump a course and are judged on a number of factors such as speed, accuracy, grace and elegance. Age six marked the start of Nick Novak’s hunter/jumper career. After years of competition, he now spends long days at Gypsy Farms in Maple Plain training horses and instructing riders from age 6 to 50. Novak has helped many a rider achieve accolades and admits he can be a bit of an emotional “goop” when a student accomplishes a major goal in the show ring. AL: What drew you to jumping? NN: It was just a fluke. I started Western lessons about two miles down a dirt road from my family’s summer home in Annandale. [One] fall, after closing up the summer home, on our drive back we passed a sign in Rockford [that] read “Happy Horse Stables: Hunters, Jumpers and Dressage.” I jumped my first jump there, and I was hooked. To me, that was the greatest high!

Photo provided by NICK NOVAK

AL: What makes the discipline unique? NN: It is hard enough to teach someone to ride, let alone teach them to be connected with their mounts, jump elements in a certain order and hold it all together. That is what makes the industry so challenging. When you have man and animal trying to work together, it is always a challenge. AL: You have numerous Grand Prix to your name. What’s your most rewarding accomplishment? NN: To me the most rewarding is having the 14-year partnership with my horse, Malone. He is 21 and still competing in the Grand Prix — which is pretty unheard of. In the past five years, he has competed in 80 Grand Prix, winning 21 and placing in 67. In 2010, at age 20, Malone won five Grand Prix. He has already won one this year. I am blessed to have had such a magnificent animal, and because of our long-term partnership, we have so many fans around the country.

a lifelong passion After years of competing, Nick Novak now teaches riders age 6 to 50.

Made in the Shade Hoigaard’s has deep roots in the custom-awning business. |

by IVY GRACIE

W

hen you hear the name Hoigaard’s, what comes to mind? Skis? Outdoor gear? The smokestack on Highway 100? None of those answers are surprising given Hoigaard’s lengthy history as one of the area’s most highly regarded sporting-goods retailers. But it might come as a surprise to learn that peddling sporting goods was an afterthought, one that arose long after C.J. Hoigaard opened his original business — a custom awning and canvas manufacturing company — in 1895. And it might be even more surprising to learn that Hoigaard’s Custom Canvas is still in business today, outfitting homes and businesses with an array of custom awnings and canvas creations. “This is the core business,” proclaims Todd Brewer, president of Hoigaard’s, as he nods toward the stacks of multicolored, rolled canvas, a slew of sewing machines and an oversized cutting table in the production room of the company’s Eden Prairie manufacturing facility. “This is how it started.” That’s right — when C.J. Hoigaard Company opened its doors at 250 Hennepin Avenue, it catered to the needs of the day: horse covers, stable tents, tents for railroad construction crews, and shelter for the miners and prospectors of the Alaskan Gold Rush of 1898. Closer to home, the company manufactured awnings for local residences and businesses. Before the advent of air conditioning, awnings helped

shade windows from the sun and keep interior temperatures tolerable. And their eye-catching appeal made them the perfect backdrop for business logos. But the eventual arrival of air conditioning in the 1940s slowed residential sales, leaving the C.J. Hoigaard Company to turn its attention to commercial clients who still saw the awning as a source of cost-effective business signage. Business grew, and in 1960 the company changed its name to Hoigaard’s, moved to a larger facility just to the west of Highway 100 in St. Louis Park and opened a retail division offering casual furniture and camping equipment. Over the years, Hoigaard’s expanded and modified its selection to include ski and snowboarding gear, bicycles, in-line skates, and sports apparel and accessories. And in 2006 the sporting-goods retailer moved to its current location at St. Louis Park’s Miracle Mile Shopping Center. Hoigaard’s Custom Canvas pressed on out of the public eye, eventually moving to Eden Prairie in the early ’90s. Along the way, the company quietly amassed a client list that reads like a who’s who of notable businesses: Lord Fletcher’s, the Freight House, Masu and Crave locally, and national and international retail juggernauts like American Girl Place and Polo Ralph Lauren. And now, residential business is experiencing a renaissance thanks to the current social and economic climates. “We’re seeing a resurgence of interest because of environmental concerns and the cost of energy,” Brewer reports, adding, “With awnings, there’s a significant savings on air-conditioning costs.” Aesthetics are another draw. “A lot of people have homes

in Naples, so when they’re here, that’s the mindset they want to have in their backyard,” says Mike O’Toole, executive vice president of Hoigaard’s Custom Canvas. And as for other projects, O’Toole says the possibilities are only as limited as the imagination. “We do privacy curtains for people who have common balconies that are divided by a low wall,” he notes. “We do curtains for screen porches. We’ve done projects for little girls where we’ll put an awning over her bed with her name on it and a matching canopy over her makeup table. And we’ve installed an awning over a bar area in an indoor pool to give it a cabana feel.” O’Toole lists custom covers for barbecues, patio furniture, boats and docks as other options, to name just a few. “Once we get out to someone’s home, they’re amazed at what we can do for them.” “It’s all about customization, craftsmanship and attention to detail,” Brewer chimes in. “We’ve always changed to address the market, but we’re still sewing canvas after 115 years. We’ve been doing this forever.”

The Thrill of the Game The sport of kings reigns supreme at the Twin City Polo Club. |

W

ith sprawling pastures, miles of fencing and neatly trimmed tree lines, the equestrian communities west of the Twin Cities are home to not only horse sports, such as polo, but also to the equestrian lifestyle that spans generations. And for nearly 50 years, the sport of kings has been played at the Twin City Polo Club in Maple Plain. Polo got its start in Minnesota in the 1920s at Fort Snelling, where it was played by the U.S. Army. Its popularity solidified with the establishment of the Meadow Lake Polo Club in Wayzata and the Eagle Ridge Polo Club near Shakopee. Then, in 1964, Jim Binger founded West End Farm, forming what is still known today as the Twin City Polo Club. The club’s season runs from May through September, with practices three times a week and game days on Sundays. This summer’s major events include the Polo Classic, which takes place July 31 and will benefit the University of Minnesota’s Leatherdale Equine Center; The Binger Cup on August 13-14 honoring the club’s founder; and the United States Polo Association Central Circuit Amateur Cup on August 17-21. Polo is often described as hockey on horseback, with players swinging 49- to 52-inch mallets while riding their opponents off the line of the ball. Teams consist of four players; the player with the highest handicap rating (ranging from -2 to +10) acts as the quarterback and sets the strategy. Over the course of six chukkers — the game’s seven-minute periods — teams attempt to score by hitting a plastic ball (roughly the size of a baseball) through the goalposts. It’s not uncommon for polo ponies to reach speeds of more than 35 mph while still being able to turn on a dime. The sheer

by LINDA LANE SOPER

magnificence of the thoroughbreds racing up and down the 300-yard-long field is as exhilarating for spectators as it is for the players on horseback. From their field-side seats, fans can hear the thunder of hooves as horses fly by. As Winston Churchill famously said, “A polo handicap is your passport to the world.” This quote rings true for polo families and spectators, with major tournaments hosted throughout the world in such cities as Indio and Santa Barbara, California; Greenwich, Connecticut; Saratoga Springs, New York; Aspen, Colorado; Wellington, Florida; Buenos Aires, Argentina; London, England; and Soto Grande, Spain. Although the sport has endured through the centuries and crisscrossed the continents, the world of polo is actually quite small, especially in the United States, where the best players in the world participate in a 16-week winter polo season at the International Polo Club Palm Beach in Wellington, Florida. Every year, the International Polo Club features a series of six high-goal polo tournaments that attracts the world’s finest players and culminates with the highly coveted U.S. Open Polo Championship. It is here where polo enthusiasts from around the world meet each April, and where many Minnesotans often can be seen field-side. Linda Lane Soper grew up in Minnesota, where her grandfather, father and sisters all played polo. An avid equestrian, she now resides in Palm Beach, Florida, where she has a public relations and marketing business. She met her husband on a polo field and can be found in both Minnesota and Florida chasing her 5-year-old twins, who frequently wield mini-mallets of their own.

Small Wonder

A micro-sized vintage takes center stage at BMW of Minnetonka this summer.

A

piece of nostalgia has rolled into BMW of Minnetonka. Remember the Isetta? Cute and curiously compact, it’s one of the most beloved cars to have ever hit the road. Some 50 years after the so-called “bubble cars” went into production, people are still marveling at these quirky vehicles. “Everyone stops and just stares at it,” says Jon Reyerson, internet sales manager at BMW of Minnetonka. “It’s pretty fun. I don’t know if a lot of other brands could say that about a 50-year-old version of their car.” On display: a beautifully restored, 1960 convertible BMW Isetta 300. The egg-shaped, white micro car weighs only 700 pounds and barely seats two. It features a large refrigerator-like front door, a fabric sunroof and a rear window section that folds down. This small

wonder, with its single-cylinder engine, can reach a top speed of 48 mph. Of course, that’s going downhill with the pedal to the metal. Micro-car collector Duane Saunders of Eden Prairie restored the convertible to its classic condition using authentic parts, including the original BMW emblem. The charming vintage Isetta will be on display at BMW of Minnetonka for the summer; the dealership plans to showcase more classic cars in the coming months. “We have a huge, beautiful dealership, but we like to think of ourselves as hosts, not owners. That’s why we host events and vehicles,” says Reyerson. “[We] wanted to create a destination and give people an experience. That’s why the Isetta really struck a chord with us.”

The Zen of Zero Peterson Winery takes a less-is-more approach to winemaking. |

A

glance at the front label of Peterson Winery’s Zero Manipulation red blend will quickly clue you in to two fundamental facts about the winery. The first, clearly expressed in the name of the wine, is Peterson’s non-interventionist winemaking philosophy, which is all about letting the grapes speak for themselves with as little human interference as possible. The second, conveyed by the image of a jackalope on the label, is that this is not a stuffy, pretentious enterprise. “We make serious wines, but we try not to be too serious about making wine,” says Fred Peterson, the winery’s easygoing founder. Unlike many well-heeled winery owners who bought their way into the business after making a fortune elsewhere, Peterson literally grew into his job. Peterson, who refers to himself as a winegrower, has deep roots

in the soil of Sonoma County’s Dry Creek Valley, having planted and tended s in the northern California wine region for the past 28 years. “When I moved up here in 1983, I doubt that there were 10 wineries in the valley,” he says. “Now there are 65.” Born and raised in San Francisco, Peterson had his first close encounter with wine grapes when a college classmate at UC Santa Cruz got him a job at his family’s vineyard in Mendocino County, just north of Sonoma. “That’s when I realized that I loved being outside, I loved growing things, I loved drinking wine and if I could make a living doing this, that’s not a bad thing,” he says. Eventually, after other vineyard and cellar work in New Zealand and California, Peterson went back to school at UC Davis, where he earned a degree in viticulture. He then managed vineyards in Monterey County and the

family affair LEFT Jamie and Fred Peterson ply their craft at a winery on the site of a former dried-

Santa Cruz Mountains before being hired by high-tech financier Bill Hambrecht to find and develop vineyard properties in Sonoma and Mendocino. Two of those properties proved to be cornerstones in Peterson’s personal and professional future. One was the Norton Ranch, at the south end of Dry Creek Valley; it was there that Peterson Winery got its start. The other parcel, perched high above the western edge of the valley on Bradford Mountain, was where Peterson built his house. A few years after he arrived in Sonoma, Peterson started making some wine in an old red barn on the Norton Ranch property. “It was kind of a sidelight to managing 650 acres of vineyard that I was responsible for,” he says. “But to me, the whole point of growing great wine grapes is to see it turned into great wine.” In 1995, Peterson took title to his house and 40 acres of vineyard property on Bradford Mountain, having earned sufficient sweat equity through his work for Hambrecht. That same year, he also acquired a majority interest in the winery when Hambrecht decided he wanted to go in a different direction and sold the Norton Ranch property to Ridge Vineyards. “I went from the frying pan into the fire,” he laughs. He can’t say he wasn’t warned. On his first day of viticulture class at UC Davis, he recalls, his professor gave him this piece of advice: “Any idiot can grow grapes and make wine in California. The secret is, can you do it and not

go broke?” In 2002, when his assistant winemaker moved on to another position, Peterson turned to his son Jamie — who had just reached legal drinking age — to fill the vacancy. Jamie likes to joke that, for the first few years, “I was doing all the work, and he was getting all the credit.” But Jamie soon got his chance to put his own stamp on the business. When Ridge decided in 2005 they wanted to use the old red barn for events, Peterson Winery pulled up stakes and moved to its current location on the site of a former dried-fruit processor, just a few miles up the valley. Fred told Jamie he could design the new winery as he saw fit. “He said, ‘You’re the winemaker now,’ ” Jamie recalls. The passing of the winemaker’s torch from father to son hasn’t significantly altered the winery’s course. If anything, Jamie has pushed his dad’s zero-manipulation regimen even farther: He uses native yeasts for fermentation whenever possible and steam-cleans old barrels for re-use to avoid the obvious oak influence that comes with new barrels. Though Zinfandel is the Petersons’ flagship varietal, they make a wide array of wines, each intended to bring out the distinctive characteristics of the grapes and the places where they were grown. “Style, to me, is dictated by the vineyard and the vintage,” says Fred. “The winemaker should be extolling the differences, not trying to manipulate or herd the wine into a direction.”

NEXT 953 W. Fulton, Chicago, 312-226-0858, nextrestaurant.com | by MICHAEL NAGRANT It’s April 14, 1912, and millionaire tycoon John Jacob Astor sips champagne and slurps oysters in the walnut wood–paneled corner of the À La Carte Restaurant on the first-class deck of the RMS Titanic. Across the room beneath gilded plaster, British fashion designer Lady Duff Gordon digs into a bowl of cream of barley soup. A few hours before the ill-fated ship hits its fatal iceberg, they will have stuffed themselves with poached salmon in mousseline sauce and peaches in chartreuse jelly. Numbering 10 courses with matching wine pairings, the meal was considered by some equivalent to an Escoffier blowout at the Ritz in Paris. Most foodies would sacrifice a crucial body part to have experienced the repast. But, until someone invents a time machine, few will get such a chance. Until now. Chef Grant Achatz and business partner Nick Kokonas, the folks behind North America’s best restaurant, Alinea, in Chicago, have launched Next, a culinary time machine of sorts. At Next, Achatz, and his chef de cuisine Dave Beran, identify a specific time and place and then undertake painstaking research and kitchen trials to recreate a meal from that time period. Every three months, the restaurant will shift gears to a new concept, like say Chicago 1950. Because this is the Alinea team, even the future is up for grabs (Hong Kong cuisine from 2036 has been rumored). The reservation system for Next is definitely ahead of its time: Diners must purchase all-inclusive, non-refundable tickets online to reserve their space. Some of Chicago’s best shopping can be found far from the crowds of Michigan Avenue. A short jaunt on the northbound Brown Line will drop you smack dab in the middle of one of the locals’ best-loved fashion destinations: the Southport Corridor. Located in the Lakeview neighborhood just west of Wrigley Field, Southport Avenue is lined with one-of-a-kind boutiques, shops, restaurants, salons, spas and theaters. Its meanderability factor is high, and its fashion options are wide. And its distinctly indie vibe offers a unique Chicago experience — and a fitting address for Cerato Boutique. The brainchild of Tracey Glibowski, Cerato Boutique is a showcase of the city’s best clothing and jewelry designers. “My goal is to keep the focus on Chicago designers,” Glibowski explains. “I really want to expose and celebrate the fashion and design talent we have here.” As such, 75 percent of her inventory comes from local talent, while the remainder is made up of more nationally known names. And the local designers — Lara Miller, C/FAN, Kate Boggiano and Anna Fong, to name a few — are well on their way to wide acclaim. Cerato Boutique’s inventory covers the fashion spectrum from casual to cocktail, from MBA to mom. Inventory changes frequently, and, thanks to Glibowski’s personal relationships with local designers, it’s not unusual to see exclusive, limited runs of special pieces created solely for her show room. An original itself, Cerato Boutique offers a welcome reward for venturing off the beaten path: world-class fashion created by local designers. “When people shop here, they’re able to learn about Chicago designers,” Glibowski says. “It’s like they’re discovering them before anybody else, which is exciting. And that’s the special part about this store.”

It’s a visual and audio landscape of fun and exciting elements.” The “Artlandish After Party” at Macy’s is designed to keep energy and entertainment levels high. “It’ll be a great mix of food, dancing — an over-the-top party,” Gansmoe declares. “We’ve got the eighthfloor auditorium at Macy’s, then you go outside onto the rooftop and you’ve got the beautiful skyline view.” Price points are accessible to all, with tickets ranging from $60 to $1,000. “That’s an all-inclusive price,” Leighton notes. “All your food and beverages are included. So it’s an affordable event for a lot of people.” And, contrary to popular belief, tickets are usually available almost right up to the day of the event. “Because it sold out for so many years at the State [Theatre], people still believe that it’s sold out and they can’t get tickets, so they don’t even try,” Leighton says. “But there are more seats available at the Orpheum and you can get tickets.” And at any price level they’re sure to be worth it — it’s not often you get to see the latest fashions, hear two incredible musical acts (Bruno Mars and Far East Movement), hit a party on a downtown rooftop and support a great cause all in one evening. But that’s why Glamorama is the summer’s hottest ticket. “We just want to give the audience a very special evening,” says Gansmoe, “from the moment they arrive to the moment they go home.”

Glamorama, with this year’s art-driven theme, is sure to excite and entertain attendees.

lamorama is arguably the swankest soiree of the season, delivering the haute-est couture, the hottest cuisine, the coolest in cutting-edge creativity and a swingin‘ shindig on a downtown rooftop. But the favored fête isn’t just about posing and partying; this bash is for a good cause. Over the past 20 years, Glamorama has raised more than $4 million for the Children’s Cancer Research Fund, a Twin Cities– based organization dedicated to finding a cure for childhood cancer by funding research and training at the University of Minnesota in the areas of prevention, treatment and finding a cure for pediatric cancer. “This is one of our biggest fundraising events of the year,” says Jim Leighton, director of events and corporate partnerships for CCRF. “Macy’s has been absolutely fundamental in our fundraising for [more than] 20 years.” “Equally important, Glamorama has exposed our mission to tens of thousands of people,” adds John Hallberg, CEO of CCRF, who says the exposure has helped keep a steady stream of funding coming in to support the fight against childhood cancer. And important advances are bringing increasingly positive results. ”We’re one of the first facilities that has perfected the double cord blood transplant,” he asserts. “And that has proven to be more effective than a regular bone marrow transplant from a matched donor, so it has dramatically improved outcomes for both children and adults battling leukemia.” “We have an amazing cause in the Children’s Cancer Research Fund,” declares Mike Gansmoe, vice president of special productions with Macy’s. “There are a lot of kids who are still with us today because of all the work CCRF has done, and Glamorama is a celebration of that.”

Role Model World-renowned polo player and Ralph Lauren model Nacho Figueras talks polo, family and his romance with Delfina Blaquier. | by JACKIE MORGAN

Artful Living: What makes polo one of the world’s most unique sports? Nacho Figueras: I think polo is very unique for different reasons. I think that the combination of man and the horse is one of the main factors. I love horses, and I spend a lot of time with them, as all polo players do. Also, polo is a very old sport. It has a lot of tradition. It involves a great relationship not only with a horse but also with your teammates. It has speed, it has danger, it has all of the ingredients to be exciting for both spectators and for players. AL: You grew up in beautiful Buenos Aires. How did your love for polo begin? NF: Argentina is a country where horses are not a rare commodity. Horses have been part of our lives, and I think that’s one of the reasons why polo became so popular here. People always say that polo is such a rare thing, and I always [respond] that it all depends on where you were born. If you were born in Hawaii, most likely you will surf. If you were born in Austria, you will ski. If you were born in Argentina, you may play polo. I was very lucky to be born here and learn to love the horse when I was very young. AL: Many are unaware of the world of polo and the equestrian lifestyle, but you are known for helping to change this. What is the driving force behind these efforts? NF: I think that polo is a sport that has a lot to offer. It’s a sport that people are not really familiar with. They feel like polo is a little bit elitist and unreachable. I think differently. I think that polo is very inclusive. It’s something that you do with your kids, with men, [with] women and in different countries. In my case, polo has been the thing that has opened the world for me. Polo is what allows a regular guy like me from Argentina to be able to play polo with the Prince of England while helping orphan kids in Africa. I see polo as a fun thing to do with your friends. I play polo with my son, I play polo with my father. I would love for everyone in the

world to see polo that way and not as a sport where you have to belong to some club and dress a certain way. I don’t want them to feel like they are not invited. AL: Which tournament, if you had to pick just one, has been your favorite to participate in and why? NF: I had this dream and vision of bringing polo to New York the way it used to be in the beginning of the century, when [it] was a much more popular sport and thousands of people would go to games. It started with the Veuve Clicquot Manhattan Polo Classic in 2008, bringing polo back to Governors Island after 70 years. Last year, the third year, really proved to me that what I am trying to achieve — to put polo into people’s minds — is not such a crazy idea. That was a very important day in my polo life, being able to prove that while helping Prince Harry’s charity, [Sentebale]. AL: You have played with and against Prince Harry many times. Are the two of you close friends? NF: No, I wouldn’t call myself a close friend. I have played with him several times in the past, and I always say that it is an honor for me to be able to be an ambassador for his charity, to be able to help him raise money for kids in need. That’s how I see the relationship: as two guys who are there for a much more important reason. He really cares about these things, so it’s an honor for me to help him. AL: This year you cohosted the Veuve Clicquot Manhattan Polo Classic. Can you tell us a bit about it? NF: This year [Prince Harry] is not able to attend. It’s a different cause this year: The charity that we are raising money for is Hope Help & Rebuild Haiti. Same purpose — trying to bring people together in New York who enjoy polo — but for a different cause. AL: You have been a face of Ralph Lauren for many years. How has your personal style evolved? NF: I grew up admiring the brand. Especially playing polo as a little kid

I grew up loving to wear that shirt with the little polo player. So it’s an honor for me, 20 years later, to be able to become the face of the brand. I have learned a lot from spending time with Ralph and with his team. I always enjoy dressing up and wearing suits for the right reasons. It’s something that I feel very comfortable with, and I think that’s the reason why this relationship has lasted for so long. AL:Ralph Lauren Romance, one of Ralph’s most adored fragrances for women, has celebrated real-life romantic couples since its launch in 1998. You and your wife, Delfina, were chosen as the face of the fragrance this year. What has this experience been like for you and your family? NF: I have been the face of the world of polo fragrances for a few years now. Romance is what I was missing. I always identified with the brand, but my family — which is the most important thing in my life — was something that was missing, to be able to show who I really am. When Ralph told us that Delfina and I would be the couple that he felt represented the Romance brand, the way he saw romance, [it was] an honor because I admire him a lot. Coming from someone like him who really understands what family means and having such great kids and a great married life, it’s an honor that he saw in us a real expression of what he believes is a true romance. AL: You and Delfina have three beautiful children. Do you think they will fall in love with the game as you have? NF: They are very exposed to it. My son who is 11 years old has been playing polo for a few years now, and he is getting more and more excited about [it]. Obviously I would love for him to become a polo player if he wants to. I always say that what I really want for my children is to have happiness and to grow up being who they feel and who they really want to be. If it has something to do with polo, wonderful, because it’s something that I love and I think it’s something that we enjoy and that

we share, so most likely they will be very associated with it. But it is not a must. They can do whatever they feel, whatever their heart tells them. AL: What is the most important thing the game of polo has taught you? NF: I think that polo is a sport that teaches you a lot of responsibility. In polo, it’s the horse. A horse really teaches you responsibility; you cannot just not take care of your horse. When you are a polo player and have so much connection with your horses, you learn not only to take care of yourself, but of someone else. By it being a team sport, you learn about friendship, partnership, sportsmanship and team connection. Also polo is a very traditional sport that says a lot about camaraderie. And that winning is not everything. It really focuses on a lot of things that are important. I think that polo is a great sport, and I would love for my children, especially my boys, to be connected.
