Bob Dylan once said, “Just because you like my stuff doesn’t mean I owe you anything.” Enjoying Dylan’s music and understanding its historical significance are two very different things. Though I personally never took to his sound, it is undeniable that his songwriting has had a remarkable influence on the world. He blew out of the North at a young age and became the voice of a generation in turbulent times. “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “The Times They Are A-Changin’” became anthems for the rising antiwar and civil-rights movements. He brilliantly tackled significant social issues in a serious yet peaceful way to unify people around music. The unpredictable Dylan made a career out of not wanting to be known. Unafraid of criticism, he continually changed course to reinvent himself musically. Our feature, anchored by Jeff Gage, examines why he left Minnesota — and why he’ll never truly leave it behind. The style, WPAP (short for Wedha’s Pop Art Portrait), was developed by his uncle, the great Wedha Abdul Rasyid, and today is being employed by young creatives across Indonesia. DAN BUETTNER’S LATEST BOOK TACKLES THIS LOFTY TOPIC. B Y K AT E N E L S O N

Minnesota native, National Geographic fellow and New York Times best-selling author Dan Buettner has spent much of his career studying what he has dubbed the Blue Zones, areas where people live the longest and are the healthiest. In his latest tome, he turns his attention to a much more nebulous topic: happiness. That thing that we all so deeply crave but that often seems out of reach. What do the world’s happiest people have in common? “They combine pleasure, purpose and pride into a resilient form of well-being,” Buettner explains in The Blue Zones of Happiness. “They follow the interests of their heart with enthusiasm, but not at the expense of feeling joy and laughter, and they look with pride on what they are doing or what they have already accomplished. And they’re able to do this, in many cases, because the places where they live — their nations, communities, neighborhoods and family households — give them an invisible lift, constantly nudging them into behaviors that favor long-term well-being.” The best part? Happiness is something each of us can create for ourselves, Buettner asserts. His book offers a blueprint, including his Blue Zones Happiness Test, specific lessons from the world’s happiest places (think Costa Rica, Denmark and Singapore), and tangible tips for achieving joy across all aspects, from the workplace to the home to inner life. A swath of scientific research always undergirds Buettner’s work, which is what differentiates this tome from the typical self-help title. His observations are objective, his recommendations specific and straightforward: adopt a dog, create a pride shrine, develop a deep friendship with a coworker. Which, for better or worse, puts each of us in the driver’s seat in our own hot pursuit of happiness. “It won’t give you instant fixes, but it will tell you how to stack the proverbial deck in favor of the most joyful, fulfilling and appropriate life for you,” he writes. “In the end, it will show you how to combine all three strands of happiness — pleasure, pride and purpose — into a strong, durable rope.”

RUSSIAN ROULETTE RAYMOND E. JOHNSON’S GAMBLE ON SOVIET ART PAYS OFF. BY W E N DY L U B OV I C H

You need to be bold to open a museum. And to fill it with Russian art — especially right in the middle of the North — takes vision. But Minnesota entrepreneur Raymond E. Johnson is a collector’s collector, in constant search of the next great work of art. “It’s addictive,” he says. “I remember the very first painting we bought. I received so much pleasure from looking at that piece every day. It also didn’t hurt that it turned out to be a marvelous investment.” That work, a moody landscape, was purchased 45 years ago. He paid roughly $3,000 and over the years has been offered 10 times that amount. It’s not for sale. It has, however, led to several other acquisitions. Today, his burgeoning assortment measures in the thousands; it’s the largest privately owned collection of Russian realist paintings outside the former Soviet Union. And it was the impetus for opening the Museum of Russian Art in Minneapolis some 15 years ago. In business and in art, Johnson does his homework. He had a hunch that Soviet art was underappreciated in the market, so he did extensive research, hiring 12 art historians from various parts of Russia. They identified a handful of notable artists, and that list formed the basis of Johnson’s early buying efforts. He says this initial input allowed the collection to take off. It also led to countless trips to artists’ studios, where he forged deep, meaningful bonds.

“Take, for example, Geli Korzhev,” he notes. “I know what his studio smelled like, how the light filtered through the grimy Moscow windows and how carefully his still-life objects were arranged because I visited more than 60 times. Knowing an artist personally changes my relationship with their work. I love to stand at arm’s length from my paintings and imagine the artist having done the same.” That kind of curiosity has served Johnson well. As a boy in Iowa, he began making archery arrows, and by age 17, he was selling them. He later invested in real estate, oil and a manufacturing company that produced wooden duck decoys. Soon they were being sold as home décor in some 75 stores Johnson owned across the country. But it was when he purchased the Overland Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona, that his passion for collecting really took hold. His devotion to Soviet art hasn’t gone unnoticed. He was named an honorary consul of the Russian Federation and in 2006 received the Order of Friendship medal from President Vladimir Putin, the highest award given to a non-Russian. During a time of tense Russian–American relations, Johnson serves as a sort of art liaison, loaning his works to museums, universities and other cultural institutions around the world. “The arts have been one of the very few channels of communication to remain open between the United States and

Russia throughout a changing political climate,” he says. “We have been very careful to remain apolitical.” A modest man, he doesn’t consider himself an expert but instead a novice with a really good eye and a great deal of luck. Still, a few of his acquisitions stand out, and one work in particular carries special meaning. “‘Sunday in the Village’ by Nikolai Dmitriev-Orenburgsky has hung behind my desk for as long as I can remember,” Johnson notes. “Each of the villagers is so vividly and intricately painted that they seem capable of dancing straight off the canvas.” That work was on view at the 1939 New York World’s Fair. And Johnson’s father, who died when the collector was just an infant, attended that event. “Being a dairy farmer, he probably didn’t spend a lot of time at a Russian exhibition,” he surmises. “But over the years I have convinced myself that he saw it. And if he did, it would be the only painting in the entire collection that both my Dad and I could have seen.” It’s this very kinship with art — and the supreme desire to share it with others — that keeps Johnson moving forward. His Museum of Russian Art is forever evolving, expanding its focus to photography, porcelain, printmaking, textiles and other media. The institution’s lively and varied exhibitions have become a mainstay of the thriving Twin Cities arts scene.

In Avant-Garde Glamour, choreographer and dancer Merce Cunningham’s creations provide a scenic backdrop for exquisite jewelry from JB Hudson Jewelers. Photographed on location at the Walker Art Center, each look combines cutting-edge fashion, beautiful baubles and visual artistry that reflect the tone of the Walker’s crowning autumn event, Avant Garden. The annual celebration of art and style took place earlier this season. “We blended jewelry from original designers with vintage and estate pieces to reflect the heritage of the jewelry in a modern way,” says Kelly Sawyer of JB Hudson. “Even with the classic pieces, not every jewel is worn the way you would see it in the case. Take the classic chain, for example: In these photos, it might be wrapped as a bracelet, topped with brooches or worn as a necklace. You can mix and match, layer and love, and it all works. It’s very personal.” The looks feature creations from designers Marco Bicego, Gurhan, John Hardy, Ippolita and Patrick Mohs as well as pieces from the JB Hudson Collection and the JB Hudson Vintage Collection. Walker Art Center Executive Director Olga Viso adds that partnerships like this fuel the artistic and cultural opportunities in the Twin Cities. “JB Hudson is a venerable Minneapolis corporate citizen with a long history of supporting the nonprofit community,” she notes. “Collaborations with companies like JB Hudson undergird all that we do at the Walker.”

Danny King asks me to button the top button of my sports coat, which I inherited several years ago from my father-in-law, a barrel-chested man approximately two inches shorter than I. I’m standing in the middle of the studio floor at King Brothers Clothiers, surrounded by racks of expensive-looking fabric, leather furniture, and a drink cart stocked with amber whiskey. We could as easily be on London’s Savile Row as on Minneapolis’s Quincy Street. Except that Danny and Kenny King — one in bold woolen plaid, the other in a bright blue blazer paired with yellow pants — don’t resemble dour and disapproving English tailors so much as a pair of bouncy cherubs working cheerfully to save my fashion soul. I look down at my hand-me-down sports coat to discover that I can’t button the top button. Because it has fallen off. “OK,” says Danny. “Well, just to reassure you, all our coats have buttons.” Then he lifts the tailor’s tape from around his neck and starts wrapping it around various parts of my physique, calling out numbers to Kenny as he goes. This is what “bespoke” means. It exists at one end of a spectrum that starts with ready-to-wear, off-the-rack clothing moves through fitted and made-to-measure and arrives at the true customization that occurs only when you make a suit from scratch based on the unique measurements of one individual client. That customer is said to speak for his specific suit, and that suit is in turn spoken for, or bespoke. I have come to the King brothers out of a looming sense that a 52-year-old in his father-in-law’s sports coat is failing one of the

tests of male adulthood in Western society — namely, the ability to wear a suit better than a 12-year-old at his first piano recital. If that realization is a tentative step toward enlightenment, it’s still no sort of preparation for the stack of swatch books waiting for me across the room. For their hundreds of four-inch cloth pages. For their herringbones and tessellations, their paisleys and plaids. For the scores of decisions I need to make in the language of colors, patterns, buttons, stitching, collars, linings, pockets and pleats. I am not fluent in this language. I couldn’t order a ham sandwich in this language. And yet, swatch by swatch, the brothers translate for me, asking a series of this-or-that questions that eliminates one option at a time until, in less than an hour, I’m gazing down at three squares of Italian fabric that represent one coat, one shirt and one pair of pants. Six weeks later, I return to the studio. I disappear briefly behind a curtain and emerge in the comfortable embrace of the first clothes that have truly fit my 250-pound frame since it was a 190-pound frame some 25 years ago. The King brothers help me slip on my coat, brush some lint from my shoulder and gently push me in the direction of the mirror. They say sometimes people laugh. Sometimes they gasp. Sometimes they stare in silence. Sometimes they cry — especially very big men — at being given themselves back in such a way that they can begin to feel proud again. What I did was look at myself straight on for a while. Then I turned sideways and smiled up and down at this guy who I thought I knew pretty well yet who suddenly looked so damned comfortable in a suit — and in his own skin.

LAKESIDE LANDMARK A historic Madison hotel returns to its former glory. BY AMBER GIBSON

Frisbees fly and laughter lilts across the grand plaza at the Edgewater, just blocks from the Wisconsin state capitol. This spot is the heart of the family-owned hotel, a community gathering place hosting free outdoor movie nights and concerts during the summer and transforming into an ice-skating rink come winter. Designed to look like a luxury steam liner, the Edgewater first opened its doors in 1948. Over the decades, it’s hosted a plethora of VIPs (see them all on the wall of fame), from Bob Hope and Elvis Presley to the Dalai Lama. The hotel’s current owners purchased the property in 2012 and reopened it two years later after a $100-million renovation and expansion, including the addition of a new tower. Of the 202 refreshed guest rooms, the Langdon Studio is a treat, complete with a clawfoot bathtub. The Statehouse’s whole-roasted Mediterranean sea bass (dressed with fennel, olives and onions) is matched by the vivid sunset views over Lake Mendota, where the Edgewater’s pier has 40 public boat slips. The eatery takes its inspiration from the Le Marche region of Italy, where its original proprietors, the Paulucci family, have deep roots. Situated amidst Canal Park’s myriad grills and pubs, it’s a fine-dining standout beloved by both locals and visitors for its superb service, authentic Italian cuisine and fine vinos. In fact, the wine program here has been recognized by Wine Spectator since the very beginning, having earned the prestigious Best of Award of Excellence annually for the past 18 years. Bellisio’s has thousands of bottles in its inventory (representing 15 different countries), with some 80 vinos available by the glass and more than 1,200 by the bottle — by far the most impressive offering in town. Gail Ambrosius first discovered the ecstasy of dark chocolate on a high-school trip to Paris. Nearly three decades later, she returned to France to apprentice with renowned chocolatiers at Michel Cluizel and Valrhona before ultimately opening up her own shop back home in 2004. Business has boomed since then, and Ambrosius moved into a larger locale this summer. During the week, chocolatiers tempering and hand dipping truffles are on full display through a glass window. And in warmer months, housemade sorbets in fruit and dark-chocolate flavors are on offer. Caramel sea salt is the most popular flavor here, but adventurous chocolate aficionados will enjoy varieties like lemongrass ginger, shiitake mushroom, and sweet curry with saffron. Ambrosius is quite discerning about her sourcing and has personally visited many of the farmers with whom she works. Her single-origin chocolate bars offer an opportunity to taste the terroir differences between cacao grown in Colombia, El Salvador and Peru. The very company blamed for the demise of bookstores across America has opened a shiny new bookstore of its own in Midtown Manhattan. And Amazon Books aims to change the way we shop. The 4,000-square-foot Columbus Circle space brings the online experience to life, with popular gadgets like Kindle e-readers and Fire tablets taking center stage. Some 3,000 books are presented not with their spines showing but with their covers facing forward — all the better to engage shoppers. Products are shown alongside the popular customer rating system, and shelves cluster together similar titles. Specially designed displays show off so-called page-turners: books that Kindle readers have finished in three days. Amazon Books has already set up shop in Chicago, San Diego and Seattle, and aims to roll out more stores this year. It’s back and more glorious than ever. After a change of management, the Grand Central Station Campbell Apartment is buzzing again with beautiful people and fresh digs. Once the private office of railroad tycoon John Williams Campbell, the haunt still has its trademark Florentine décor and coffered ceiling. The nuance of detail is just more apparent thanks to a subtle tweak in lighting. The bar, meanwhile, has been polished from end to end, with frosted light streaming in through the leaded windows. Now called simply the Campbell, the revamped landmark includes two new spaces. Situated just off the main bar, the Campbell Palm Court is a sultry spot with a view. Outside in a former taxi stand along Vanderbilt Avenue, the Campbell Terrace offers an energetic, street-side vibe. All feature such classic cocktails as mules, negronis and old-fashioneds as well as light bites like mini lobster rolls and tuna tartare tacos. Culver City is proving that it’s a shopping destination worth fighting Los Angeles traffic for. Since Platform opened in spring 2016, its ever-evolving assortment of innovative merchants, chefs and creatives has drawn an enthusiastic crowd. What was once a four-acre car dealership has been transformed into a collection of eight spaces connected by meandering gardens. Its home, creative corridor Hayden Tract, has received myriad accolades for its postmodern, neo-industrial architecture. Just as eclectic are Platform’s 20 boutiques and pop-ups, from Aesop’s first U.S. day spa to Linda Farrow’s North American flagship. Magasin carries menswear from Camoshita, Eral 55 and Thomas Mason, while Rabbit Ladders is dedicated to high-end children’s clothing. Michael McCarty’s eponymous Santa Monica restaurant helped pioneer what we’ve come to know as California cuisine when its doors opened back in April 1979. Regulars came for the stellar service, the gorgeous garden and of course the farm-to-table fare (long before the concept had caught on). The roster of culinary talent who’s come through the kitchen here reads like a who’s who of American cuisine: Ken Frank, Kazuto Matsusaka, Gordon Naccarato, Mark Peel, Billy Pflug, Nancy Silverton, Jonathan Waxman and Brooke Williamson, among others. Last year, McCarthy took a chance on promising young chef Miles Thompson — who, if anyone is counting, is nearly a decade younger than the eatery itself. And like many risks the restaurateur has taken over the decades, that bet is paying off in spades. Critics and customers alike are drooling over Thompson’s forward-thinking, thoroughly delectable fare that simultaneously modernizes the menu and honors the Santa Monica institution’s history. Some things haven’t changed. The walls are still adorned with museum-quality works from its proprietor’s private collection (think artists like Dennis Hopper, Jasper Johns and Frank Stella). McCarty still roams from table to table to introduce himself and thank diners for their patronage. And much like it did back in the seventies, his restaurant is once again experiencing an incredible culinary revolution. Who is Bob Dylan? That’s a question the world has been asking for half a century, ever since a scrawny kid from who knows where started showing up with his guitar in New York City coffee shops calling himself by that name. If anything has become clear in the decades since then, it’s that the mystery only deepens the harder you try to solve it. The 76-year-old troubadour is, as he has always been, many things — most of them contradictory. He’s the voice of a generation, and he’s the creepy grandpa wandering the set of a Victoria’s Secret commercial. He’s the dapper devil with the Vincent Price mustache, and he’s the recluse mistaken for a vagrant. He’s a Minnesotan, and he’s not. We Northerners are particularly prone to wonder just who he is — and, perhaps, how he feels about us. But despite all the profound divinations and obscure riddles that have been perceived in his hundreds of hours of recorded music, ambivalence is one of Dylan’s default settings. Bobby Z. hasn’t entirely severed his ties to the Land of 10,000 Lakes. Since the seventies, he’s owned a farm along the Crow River, not far from the Twin Cities. His younger brother, David, resides there, and the singer sometimes sojourns there, too, often with ex-girlfriends or childhood friends. (Those visits have become less frequent, however, since his mother, Beatty, passed away 17 years ago.) If anything, he’s become more enigmatic in the intervening years, even when he agrees to the rare interview. In 2012, for instance, he told a Rolling Stone writer he was a transfigured Hells Angels biker who died in a fiery crash back in the sixties. Not exactly helpful to the rest of us, but it certainly does add a layer to that always-fluid origin myth. Which leads us to one thing we do know about Bob Dylan. Poet, philosopher, prophet or prankster, above all else, he’s a storyteller. Believe him at your peril, perhaps, but don’t be foolish enough to stop listening. His is a tale that the world will always want to hear. Minnesotans most certainly will, because that story got its start right here.

Bob Dylan has never much cared for homecomings. You don’t leave town, drop out of college, change your name and not look back for more than half a century if you do. An eternally restless soul, he has always found his home somewhere down the highway. And on the never-ending tour of life, Minnesota never stood a chance at winning him over. Not that it’s personal — for the most part. Born in the edge-of-civilization port of Duluth then raised in the one-horse mining town of Hibbing, Dylan simply wasn’t destined to stick around. His world wasn’t the world of the snowbound blue-collar laborers who surrounded him. His was the world of mythical heroes bound for epic journeys. He left because he had to; it was the only way he could discover that world. Some places came closer to home than others, and the musician maintains plenty of properties. But houses are not the same as homes. New York City, of course, is where the Dylan we know — the one who left Bobby Zimmerman behind — came to exist. Woodstock, New York, held promise, but that dream eventually evaporated (along with the dream of domestic bliss). Malibu, California, is a home of sorts today, but only when it suits him. And a 100-acre farm in his native land of Minnesota sees him occasionally. Before long, he will have a real home, if only for posterity’s sake. Thanks to a deal struck in recent years, he is delivering his mother lode to the world in the form of the Bob Dylan Archive. It will eventually house 6,000-plus artifacts from his personal collection: lyrics, photos, handwritten notes, clothing and other personal effects. The collection is available now for approved research projects and eventually will be for curated public exhibitions. But that news comes with a typically Dylan-esque caveat, especially as far as his fellow Minnesotans are concerned. Home for the archive will not be Duluth or Hibbing or anywhere near the Land of 10,000 Lakes. It will be hundreds of miles away at the University of Tulsa’s Helmerich Center for American Research. The institution and the George Kaiser Family Foundation made that happen, reputedly for somewhere north of $15 million. One thing Tulsa, Oklahoma, has in its favor is the Woody Guthrie Center. The folksinger (and Dylan’s idol) was born just down the road in Okemah. The archives of Phil Ochs, an old friend of Dylan’s, are also housed there. A would-be folk-music mecca, it’s as close to a holy land as the onetime born-again Christian will ever find. That’s about as fitting as it’s going to get in his book. For a man hell-bent on following the lead of gypsies, wanderers and footloose rail riders, home is a state of mind rather than a place on a map.

Stories of heroes leaving home on epic adventures are as old as storytelling itself. Legends, poems and songs are filled with such tales — true, false and exaggerated. America itself was built on such a myth, a country and a people destined to push west and ever forward into the promised land. The music world, too, is full of would-be heroes trying to make it big in cities like Los Angeles, New York City and Nashville. Minnesota is no exception. Even Prince, the man who put his home state on the map, left for Los Angeles on occasion. The difference, though, is that he always came back; this was his home. His sound was the Minneapolis sound, and First Avenue was the house that Prince built. And even though the Purple One kept his hometown fans at arm’s length, he always kept them within reach. Dylan, on the other hand, is a Minnesotan almost in spite of himself. “It was just an accident of geography,” he told Nat Hentoff in a 1966 Playboy profile of where he was raised. “I didn’t run away from it; I just turned my back on it. It couldn’t give me anything. It was very void-like. So leaving wasn’t hard at all — it would have been much harder to stay.” Decades later, when he wrote his 2004 memoir Chronicles: Volume One, there was no chapter devoted to his life in Minnesota. The story, as he told it, started in New York City. Tellingly, he did recall living through the Red Scare in the fifties. “It seemed peculiar,” he wrote of hiding under his desk during nuclear-war drills in elementary school. “Living under a cloud of fear like this robs a child of his spirit.” Associations clearly have a strong influence on Dylan’s memories of his childhood. The postwar years were an era of conformity, repression and white flight. A new world was coming, but the old world was still holding tight. That wouldn’t change until the sixties, by which time he had escaped to

the East Coast. “All that was over now,” was his brisk summation in Chronicles. “I was in New York City.” His blasé attitude about his home land hasn’t subsided. When Dylan was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature last year — a first for a musician — the only reference to Hibbing in his acceptance speech was about the great distance he journeyed to see Buddy Holly in concert: “I had to travel a hundred miles,” he said. And in an extended interview with Bill Flanagan earlier this year, Dylan spoke callously of his birthplace: “I was born in Duluth — industrial town, ship yards, ore docks, grain elevators, mainline train yards, switching yards. … It was a dark place, even in the light of day — curfews, gloomy, lonely, all that sort of stuff.”

Still, at times he spoke charitably, even poetically, about northern Minnesota. “Your blood gets thick,” he told Flanagan. “Birch trees, open pit mines, bears and wolves — the air is raw.” His descriptions were evocative, but if there was a certain dignity in the “hardscrabble” environment he described, it was still an anonymous way of life. “People lead simple lives, but they lead simple lives in other parts of the country, too,” he added. “People are pretty much the same wherever you go.” After leaving Hibbing, he spent all of six months in Minneapolis, a blip on the radar in the life of a septuagenarian. Plenty has been made of his time there, with countless anecdotes from fellow musicians like Tony Glover and Spider John Koerner

to reinforce just how big of an influence the city allegedly had on Dylan’s artistic development. There’s even the mural on Fourth Street in Dinkytown to suggest that it was the inspiration behind “Positively 4th St.,” one of his greatest putdown songs — a rather dubious honor to wear with such pride. Dylan knew the Twin Cities music scene was no place for him. “I was traveling down a different path and already my consciousness had been recast,” he told Flanagan. “I had been bailed out of the past and had broke free. I wasn’t going to go back to that other place with button-down shirts and crew cuts for anyone or anything.” He was more interested in storytelling, and he found that in the music of blues and folk legends Lead Belly, Memphis Minnie and Charley Patton — traditional music, as he dubbed it. “It comes about from legends, Bibles, plagues, and it revolves around vegetables and death,” he told Hentoff. “There’s nobody that’s going to kill traditional music. All these songs about roses growing out of people’s brains and lovers who are really geese and swans that turn into angels — they’re not going to die.” In his Nobel Prize acceptance speech, given exactly 50 years after that interview, Dylan drew a line directly from the storytelling of that traditional music to the literature that inspired him, like Homer’s Odyssey and Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. He identified in particular with Melville’s Ishmael, paraphrasing his famous line about another character’s home: “It’s not down on any map. True places never are.”

Much like the through line Dylan saw from classic literature to blues and folk music, he saw a direct route from northern Minnesota to the Deep South, where much of that sound originated. That route was Highway 61, which at one time ran from New Orleans all the way through Duluth and up to the Canadian border at Grand Portage State Park. Son House and Muddy Waters lived along it, Mississippi Fred McDowell and countless others sang about it, and Robert Johnson even allegedly sold his soul to the devil alongside it. “I always felt like I’d started on it, always had been on it and could go anywhere from it, even down into the deep Delta country,” Dylan wrote of the roadway in Chronicles. “It was the same road, full of the same contradictions, the same one-horse towns, the same spiritual ancestors. The Mississippi River, the bloodstream of the blues, also starts up from my neck of the woods. I was never too far away from any of it. It was my place in the universe, always felt like it was in my blood.” Dylan may not be a homebody, but every storyteller needs his story. And there’s no better metaphor for his musical odyssey than Highway 61. That’s why when he went electric in 1965 and cut an album that wed his love of folk storytelling with electric blues he called it Highway 61 Revisited. The rowdy title track encapsulated all the unruliness he saw in traditional music with the conformity and paranoia he associated with home. God, kings and gamblers — they could all be found along that 1,600-mile stretch. Nearly a decade later, Dylan would return to his home state to write and record his most personal album, Blood on the Tracks. Several of its songs, including its most famous, “Tangled Up in Blue,” were recorded at the now-shuttered Sound 80 studio in Minneapolis. That album, more so than any of Dylan’s other 37, just feels like the North. Although his worldly possessions are destined for Oklahoma, a permanent return to Minnesota may not be out of the question for Dylan. “I didn’t want to die there,” he told Hentoff in that Playboy interview. “As I think about it now, though, it wouldn’t be such a bad place to go back to and die in. There’s no place I feel closer to now or get the feeling that I’m part of — except maybe New York, but I’m not a New Yorker. I’m North Dakota–Minnesota Midwestern. I’m that color. I speak that way. I’m from someplace called Iron Range. My brains and feeling have come from there.” So, too, has his music.

When he does reappear, the musician has grown a beard and is all but unrecognizable.

“Why do you wear those outlandish clothes?” That was the provocative question asked of Bob Dylan during his 1966 Australian tour. “I look very normal where I live,” was his deadpan reply. Even in that era, when fashion was really starting to get wild, there was no place on earth where the musician’s appearance — typically a tapered, striped suit topped with a halo of untamed brown ringlets — would be considered normal. Whenever we discuss Dylan, we must bear in mind that we’re talking about a dozen or so different characters. The superlative shape shifter has changed his look as often as he has his sound. And each and every one of his personas has had a singular sense of style and projected an image as carefully crafted as any of the icon’s song lyrics.

The musician has the look and sound of a living legend reinventing himself once again with the release of his album Time Out of Mind.

As far back as Bill Pagel can remember, he’s had a keen interest in collecting. When he was growing up, it was coins and baseball cards. Today, the 75-year-old pharmacist is the custodian of an incredible assemblage of Bob Dylan memorabilia amassed over several decades, from concert posters to high-school yearbooks (complete with inscriptions) to the musician’s boyhood home. The house was a white whale of sorts, a 2001 eBay purchase that set Pagel back some $82,000. He’s slowly restoring the wood-sided Duluth duplex (located at 519 North Third Avenue East, for those not in the know) to the way it was when Dylan and his family lived there in the forties — a labor of love, to be sure. But the collection had much humbler beginnings.

“I first became aware of Bob Dylan in the fall of 1961 while in college at the University of Wisconsin in Madison,” explains Pagel. “Some of my friends were from New York City and had seen him perform — this was before his first album came out. One of them showed me a New York Times article written by Robert Shelton giving Bob a very favorable review after seeing him perform at Gerdes Folk City in Greenwich Village. Several months later, I purchased his first album when it was released in early 1962.” Pagel, unsurprisingly, still has that record and that newspaper article. They hold special meaning for the archivist amidst the tens of thousands of items in his possession. And what has largely been a private collection has only in recent years been made available for public viewing. “I have always wanted to share my collection with the public,” he notes. “An opportunity arose in 2016, when the Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum in Duluth offered to host an exhibit. The success of that exhibit prompted us to showcase it again this summer with the addition of many new items.” One person who hasn’t seen the collection? The subject himself. “I’m not sure what Bob would think of it or that he would even care,” Pagel muses. “However, Bob is somewhat of a collector himself as evidenced by the vast amount of material he and his office have accumulated and are in

the process of transferring to the Bob Dylan Archive at the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma.” The archivist is also passionate about sharing the surreal stories behind the pieces. One signed manuscript, for example, contains the obscure last verse to Woody Guthrie’s “This Land is Your Land.” As Pagel explains, “Bob sang this song at a Thanksgiving party at the apartment of Eve and Mac McKenzie in New York City on November 25, 1961, with this additional verse included. The McKenzies and the other folksingers were unfamiliar with that verse, and Eve asked Bob to write out the words. This is the paper on which he wrote that verse, along with several doodles.” The consummate collector, Pagel is constantly on the hunt for Dylan memorabilia. But these days, the search criteria are fairly specific. “I am always looking for early photos of Bob, especially from the period when he lived in Duluth and Hibbing, and when he lived in Minneapolis while attending the University of Minnesota before leaving for New York City in 1961,” he explains. “I would love to find photos of him when he played at the Ten O’Clock Scholar and other Dinkytown clubs. A REMODEL INFUSES SIMPLE SPACES WITH STUNNING SOUTHERN CHARM. B Y C A R O LY N C R O O K E

This Georgian-style red brick home was built for the homeowners in 1998 at a point when their children and their careers were still growing. Basic, functional spaces worked then, but nearly two decades later, the couple was ready for a stylish reset. They tapped Vujovich Design Build and Eminent Interior Design to create defined, sophisticated rooms full of Southern charm. “The layout was quite traditional already,” notes Brandi Hagen, owner and principal designer of Eminent, who had previously worked with the owners on smaller projects. “We went to work adding architectural detail along with fine finishes and furnishings to evoke a period feel.” In the living room, the team added beams and medallions to the ceiling. A quietly elegant chandelier, linen window treatments and grass-cloth wallpaper bring a sense of Old World allure, while tufted blue-gray sofas flank a silver-leafed coffee table. The dining room, meanwhile, features hand-screened wallpaper in a dainty damask pattern. The space’s two-toned

paint treatment brings out the moldings on the ceiling. The millwork throughout the home was hand built onsite by the Vujovich team, just as it would have been a century ago. The refresh is especially dramatic in the kitchen, with its enlarged, arched window and white inset cabinetry that stretches to the ceiling and even conceals the refrigerator. The new island features double-thick quartz that resembles marble, creating a timeless sense of heft. “Nothing’s trendy here,” explains Hagen. “We went with classic features, like oil-rubbed bronze hardware and a limestone fireplace surround, while still keeping the overall sense of lightness that the owner craved.” Eminent and Vujovich have partnered on high-style remodels in the past and were happy to collaborate on this project, notes Beth Malmberg, design manager at Vujovich. “When people make a decision to invest in their home like this, it’s important to find a team that can work together and make the process enjoyable,” she says.

There’s just something about Minnesota that brings people home. After spending several whirlwind years working in Switzerland with frequent travels throughout Europe, a pair of adventurous Northerners moved to Dana Point, a surf town in Southern California. But as their three children reached high-school age, the couple heeded the siren call of Minnesota and moved back to be closer to family and friends. The husband grew up in Edina, so when the duo discovered this 1930s English cottage–style home with expansive gardens, a swimming pool and a cabana, they knew it would be perfect for their relaxed California lifestyle. After settling the kids in school, they decided to gently update the house to reflect their sense of fun, appreciation of modern design and love of entertaining friends. Having renovated several other houses, the owners knew the importance of working with professionals who understand the unique challenges of a historic home. They also wanted to work closely with their architect, builder, interior designer and landscape designer at every stage of the project. On the recommendation of friends, the couple put together a team known for its ability to infuse traditional homes with a modern aesthetic, including Lars Peterssen and Bob Le Moine of Peterssen/Keller Architecture, architectural builders Steven Streeter and Bob Near of Streeter & Associates, Andrew Flesher of Andrew Flesher Interiors, and landscape designer Scott Ritter of Topo. “The design challenge was two-fold,” says Flesher. “The house is iconic, so it was important to the clients that we preserve the exterior beauty that the neighbors knew and loved. At the same time, they wanted the interiors to reflect their love of the California lifestyle.” After studying the blueprints, the team recommended several strategic design moves to honor the architecture while easing the formality and making the house more inviting. “The home is beautifully constructed with great bones and quality craftsmanship, so we knew we could create an easy, effortless flow between the main-floor spaces, a stronger connection between inside and out, and beautiful views from every room,” says Near. The team opened up a wall between the family room and the kitchen, creating a spectacular view from the front entry right through to the swimming pool. The pros also expanded the kitchen and created an open, light-filled dining room. Rustic European ceiling beams create warmth and intimacy, while luminous white Italian plaster walls by Darril Otto of Otto Painting Design provide a quiet backdrop for the owners’ collection of original art and photographs from their travels.

Deftly balancing SoCal casual with European sophistication, Flesher and the clients designed custom furnishings, including a luxurious yet practical 18-foot sofa for the living room and a curvaceous banquette for the kitchen. When the designer found a pair of glamorous antique chairs on 1stdibs and placed them in the front window, the family’s wheaten terrier instantly claimed them as his favorite spot for sitting and watching the world go by. The owners love entertaining alfresco, so the team renovated the cabana and added an expansive bluestone patio with an outdoor living room and fireplace. Inspired by the rusticated Platteville limestone exterior, Ritter planted the gardens with alpine currant, hydrangeas, and other traditional flowers and shrubs in a quiet palette of white and ivory. Now that the renovation is complete, the clients couldn’t be happier. And for everyone involved, there’s a special pride in knowing how much the family enjoys its new home. “Being invited to renovate a historic home with a great team is always a privilege,” says Peterssen. “And when wonderful clients entrust us to make it the most important place in the world for their family, it’s the highest honor.”

Quiet the mind, think of a dreamy getaway, picture your favorite color, recall the scents of an exquisite dinner and replay the laughter of a fun-filled evening. Now take a moment to jot down your thoughts or sketch some images. Our inspiration is often deep within us, and we just don’t allow the time to find it. Trend you love: I love the trend of the non-trend. I’m tantalized by the undecorated style of decorating — that is to say, decorating so it looks as though we have not been there. Decorate for you (not the designer), your style and your family. Set aside all those nonsensical trends that come and go. When I was a budding designer, my mentor guided me to mindfully create, always keeping at the forefront the classic elements of good architecture, art and design. All those foundational building blocks of form and function prevail when we set aside trends and let our own design wishes come to fruition. A classic that will never go out of style: Just like that little black dress or handsome pair of loafers, a clean-lined, tuxedo-style sofa will be loved for generations. It can be styled in velvet or upholstered in linen, but no matter the draping, the bones remain classic. Most memorable project: That special project where the stars align between all design partners and the client, whereby meetings are thought-provoking, exciting and rich with discussion.

Your company’s trademark: Lucy loves color. That is to say, we love the power of color (or lack of color) to evoke emotion.

Most memorable project: For a historical Victorian remodel, I visited the city of Carrara, Italy — where the marble for Michelangelo’s statuary was quarried — to select the materials for the mosaic floors I was designing for the kitchen and dining rooms. The quarry owner gave my clients and me an exclusive tour of this fabulous resource. Standing alone in the cutout portion of the stone mountaintop, I realized it was the most exceptional organic cathedral known to man.

I realize while packing for my jaunt to the Home Ranch, a Relais & Châteaux retreat tucked into Colorado’s Elk River Valley near Steamboat Springs, that I might be a pathetic excuse for a Minnesotan. Specifically, I don’t have any of the recommended gear (snow pants, headband, non-driving gloves) for such activities as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing (endeavors I have never attempted). So it is with some trepidation (and a suitcase full of freshly acquired apparel) that I settle into our cabin, one of just eight

across the 4,000-acre property. General Manager Brooks Bradbury and his staff quickly assuage my fears, however, assuring me that I am in good hands. When we take our seats at the communal table for the multi-course, chef-driven dinner, we’re welcomed like long-lost family. Most of the other guests have been coming here for years and are giddy for our introduction to the Home Ranch, an outdoor enthusiast’s playground. We’ll love it, they tell us, and with each passing moment, I believe it more and more.

The next morning, following a hearty breakfast, we head over to the Ski Hut to get fitted for snowshoes and cross-country skis. My stomach starts to dance as I realize that no amount of North Face garb will improve my skills. Before I have the opportunity to make a fool of myself, I blurt out that I will probably make a fool of myself. Our guide, Gage, reassures me that I’ll feel confident out on the property’s wealth of well-groomed trails in no time. He’s having the two of us rehearse rudimentary movements when I, while practicing a simple, stationary turn, lose my balance and slam down hard onto the snow-covered ground. I’m instantly embarrassed, but Gage tells me it’s important to be OK with falling — most people hurt themselves trying to avoid it. We set out on Aspen Arches, one of the novice-friendly trails, and my confidence starts shifting from feigned to real. That is, until we reach a gradual slope that careens through the woods, around a corner and past a ravine that, as far as I can tell, drops down to the earth’s mantle. After he’s deftly made his descent, Gage tells me to trust the skis — a concept I can’t even begin to comprehend. I stand at the top of the hill, deliberating and rationalizing. And then, to my surprise, I just do it. I let go and try my damnedest to trust the skis. And as luck would have it, I don’t crash and burn. I’m now bursting with so much excitement that the property’s miles upon miles of trails are no longer intimidating. And so for the rest of our stay, I snowshoe and I cross-country ski and I stand atop what feels like it might be the highest point on earth. It’s there that I realize that my Home Ranch experience has taught me so much beyond pizza-pie stops. It’s taught me how to live — and how to be a better Minnesotan.

“Part of my passion for this project comes from spending every summer of my life at a family lake home that my grandparents built in 1926,” says Skogmo. With Moose Camp, the challenge wasn’t simply to create an extraordinary space for the couple and their three children but to retain the property’s historic value and essence. “My job was to help them interpret what they were trying to do and make it look like I hadn’t been there,” she adds. The most substantial interior overhaul was to the kitchen, which Skogmo explains was “designed for a woman to sit there and cook eggs and never come out of.” They transformed the space by doubling its size and adding a granite island. “We went from a tiny, dank kitchen to a modernized, well-lit kitchen,” says John. “It’s the perfect space for people to gather and eat meals or play games.” Throughout the process, Skogmo worked to ensure that every update remained authentic. “We relied upon a Minneapolis cabinet shop that literally replicated the cabinets from when the cabin was built, but they added new glass knobs and bin pulls to make them more functional,” she says. “We also put in a door. Marcia commented that for the first time, you can actually see the lake from the kitchen!” In the grand salon, Skogmo complemented the original walls and stone fireplace with era-appropriate décor. “We added custom-made moose light fixtures to illuminate the room rather than installing recessed lights, which wouldn’t have existed back then,” she says. Bolero chairs from Hickory Chair designer Mariette Himes Gomez strike the perfect balance of simplicity and comfort, and the furniture throughout the home is thoughtfully upholstered in indoor/outdoor fabric (in other words, wet bathing suits are always welcome). The final product is a retreat with truly historic charm, a rarity in an age of overdone lake homes and stark, untimely décor. “What’s so wonderful is that people like John and Marcia have purchased Moose Camp and want to keep it intact and take care of it,” says Skogmo. “I know that those who are long gone are cheering that it’s all still as it once was.”

A passion for the great outdoors courses through Laura Schara’s veins. Quite truly, it’s in her blood. She got it from her dad, consummate outdoorsman and Minnesota Bound host Ron Schara. “I always tell people I was pretty much born with a fishing pole in my hand,” she says. “But it wasn’t just about hunting or fishing in our family; my dad was always teaching us about the circle of life. My sister and I were fortunate to have such a great teacher who instilled in us the importance of spending time in the outdoors and how that reconnects you to something greater than yourself.” After college, Laura strayed from the family business and forayed into fashion, producing shows for Marshall Field’s then Macy’s. But the call of the wild always rang out to her. “When I worked in the high-paced fashion world, going back to nature would ground me,” she explains. “I have always appreciated returning to something that brings me back down to earth in a really good way.” She started appearing on Minnesota Bound, which ultimately led to more television gigs. Today, she’s a regular on the Outdoor Channel, Fox Sports North and the like. Laura’s passion for fashion certainly hasn’t faded, and she still produces shows (like the Mall of America’s Curated Style show earlier this fall). And most of her efforts — including her blog, Wildly Living — bring together those two worlds. When she gets the opportunity to go hunting or fishing these days, it’s about much more than just the sport. “This past spring, I was turkey hunting with my dad,” she recalls. “And one morning, I missed a very easy shot. It was such a moment of defeat, and I realized I was in for a very long day. But I was lucky enough to get a second shot, a second chance, and I got that bird. There’s something really primal that comes over you when you are about to take an animal’s life for your own, to feed your soul and to feed your family.”

Among her favorite fall traditions? Pheasant hunting. “I love it for two reasons: One, pheasant is really good to eat, and two, there’s a lot of camaraderie in the field,” Laura explains. “A lot of hunting — deer hunting, for example — means you’re sitting there in solitude. You’re dead silent. But when you’re pheasant hunting, there could be five, 10, 15 of you. You’re walking through the fields, you’re out in the fresh air, the dogs are working, the sun is shining, you’re laughing because you’re missing birds (I’m a champion at missing pheasants). That’s why it’s such a fun sport.” When it comes to cooking pheasant, Laura is totally game. “My mom is an amazing wild game cook, and we ate so much of it growing up,” she notes. “She was always experimenting, and I love to experiment when I’m in the kitchen. What it really comes down to is how you prep the bird before you cook it. Brining is key: It helps the meat retain moisture and also softens some of the muscle tissue. When you brine a bird, it can take out a lot of the game flavor because you can add in your favorite herbs and spices. I personally like a little smoked sea salt.” Another tip: “Never fully cook your game on the stovetop,” she says. “Where people often go wrong is overcooking it. Instead, just sear in the juices on the stovetop — high heat, really quickly — then slow cook it in the oven to retain the moisture. But above all, with wild game, you have to be willing to give yourself a hall pass to experiment.” Similarly, she encourages anyone who wants to try their hand at hunting but who might be intimidated — women especially — to pull the trigger. She suggests starting with gun safety (“hands down, the No. 1 thing you need to do”), finding a good coach (not necessarily your husband) and, once you’re in the field, not taking yourself too seriously. “If you miss, who cares?” Laura says with a smile. “I call that ‘hunt and release.’ I have no problem watching a bird fly away; I’m still having as much fun. Don’t put that much pressure on yourself. As long as you’re safe and having a good time, that’s all that matters.”

ROLE MODEL CHERYL TIEGS ON FASHION, PHILANTHROPY AND THAT CONTROVERSIAL ASHLEY GRAHAM COMMENT. B Y K AT E N E L S O N

Dubbed America’s first supermodel, Minnesota native Cheryl Tiegs got her big break at the tender age of 17. She went on to grace the covers of such high-profile publications as Glamour, Harper’s Bazaar and, perhaps most memorably, Sports Illustrated. Today, the 70-year-old focuses her time on activism, health and happiness. We sat down with her to discuss her fashion career, how the industry has changed and that controversial sound bite about plus-size model Ashley Graham. ARTFUL LIVING: YOU WERE BORN IN BRECKENRIDGE, MINNESOTA, AND YOU SPENT A FEW YEARS HERE BEFORE YOUR FAMILY MOVED TO CALIFORNIA. DO YOU HAVE MANY MEMORIES OF THE NORTH? CHERYL TIEGS: Yes, I do. I think we moved to California when I was about 5. I spent my time on my grandparents’ farm. That influenced me for the rest of my life. There were fields of corn and wheat; there was a barn with cows, pigs and hay — just about everything you can imagine on the farm. I ran around barefoot in the summer; I stole eggs from the chickens. Today, whenever I travel too much or I’m too much in the public eye, all I want to do is put on my hiking boots and get my feet on the ground, on the dirt — not on concrete. I think that’s stayed with me, and I think that’s important. AL: HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START IN FASHION? CT: At the time, I lived in Alhambra, right next to Pasadena. My girlfriend next door kept coming over with Seventeen magazine saying, “Cheryl, you could be a model.” I thought she was crazy. I thought models were from another planet, and it was just out of the realm of possibility. I started very slowly. I worked part-time in high school and college. I would do anything and everything. I would do fashion shows in the back parking lot of a department store for free. I would work for $5 an hour, which was great money for me at the time. I was thrilled. I just worked hard, and I did anything and everything I could. Then Glamour magazine saw me in a several-page spread for a bathing suit. They were in New York and said, “We want to book this girl sight unseen to go down to St. Thomas.” That was almost the first time I’d been on an airplane. I did several covers down there and began working for Glamour regularly.

AL: HAS FASHION ALWAYS BEEN A PASSION OF YOURS? CT: No, not really. As a model, you have to make everything you

put on look like a million bucks. But you’re not always wearing Ralph Lauren or Calvin Klein. I did a lot of catalog, and you have to make it look really beautiful and attractive. I was never a fashion icon. In my own personal life, I dressed very simply. Yes, I would wear the designers, but the next day I would give it back. I had the luxury of being able to wear that clothing, but in my own life, it was very simple. Give me a sweater, a pair of jeans and tennis shoes, and I was fine. AL: WHAT PHOTO SHOOTS AND CAMPAIGNS STAND OUT MOST IN YOUR MEMORY? CT: Oh, always Sports Illustrated and where we were around the

world. You never knew if you got the cover shot until the day of practically. It was exhilarating. It was tiring. It was really a lot of work. Sometimes you’d get up at 3:30 in the morning and get home at 11 at night. It was long, arduous hours, but of course I loved it. Another one that stands out in my mind is the Time magazine cover. I remember the red bathing suit. Hiro was the photographer. I remember everything about that day, because I knew that it was a huge part of my career. I remember all the Glamour magazine trips and of course Harper’s Bazaar. We went on a lot of trips. AL: YOU’RE OFTEN DESCRIBED AS THE FIRST AMERICAN SUPERMODEL. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THAT TITLE?

The money is different. It’s much more now. When I was doing it, it was more or less a family affair. I went to the CoverGirl barbeques; I went to the homes of people who worked with Harper’s Bazaar; I became best friends with the editor of Glamour. I don’t know exactly what it’s like today, but I think that it’s much more catered to the models. They’re in the limelight much more; it just wasn’t like that. People magazine wasn’t even around when I first started modeling. There was no Entertainment Tonight; there was no CNN. There were no cell phones; there was no Twitter or Facebook. So it was just the immediate. It was more in the moment, and I liked that. AL: LAST YEAR, YOU WERE AT THE CENTER OF A CONTROVERSY FOR YOUR COMMENTS ABOUT PLUS-SIZE SPORTS ILLUSTRATED MODEL ASHLEY GRAHAM. DO YOU REGRET SAYING THAT FULL-FIGURED WOMEN AREN’T HEALTHY? CT: I didn’t say it like that, and my problem is that most people

haven’t seen the interview. I just want everyone to be healthy. That’s the bottom line. I’ve worked hard all my life to be healthy. I didn’t even know her name, I hadn’t seen the cover — nothing. I wasn’t zeroing in on her, because I don’t know her. Anyway, the media sensationalized it. It’s a shame, because really all I was doing was trying to look out for the health of someone who’s too thin or going on the other side of the scale. It’s just about finding your own healthy path. That’s all. I don’t know her; I don’t know if she’s healthy or not. That’s up to her. AL: WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR WOMEN WHO ARE HOPING TO AGE GRACEFULLY, LIKE YOU HAVE? CT: You can’t just hope that it happens; you really have to

CT: Someone of course gave me that title. I think it’s a way of

saying that I didn’t just drop out of sight after a very successful career in modeling; I went on to start other businesses. I worked for Good Morning America, and I started the line of clothes for Sears. When I was modeling, most of the girls became actresses, because that was the next logical step. I just decided I didn’t want to be an actress, and I started up these companies. AL: HOW HAS THE FASHION INDUSTRY CHANGED OVER THE YEARS? CT: Well, it’s certainly different. When I was modeling, I did

my own hair and makeup. I put my bag over my shoulder and went to the studio. It was as simple as that. Nobody talked about their private lives. I didn’t know that half the girls were married. Then I was surprised to learn later on that one girl had three children. Nobody talked about that; it was just the other side of their lives. Today, people are very proud — and should be very proud — of their family life. I see their little babies and all of that. That was never done before.

make the effort. It’s a daily effort of eating the right foods and exercising. As you age, maybe you cut back on your exercise; maybe you’re not doing the fun Zumba classes you always did. But always incorporate some kind of exercise into your life. Do something that makes you happy. I love reading, and I gave that up for a while. Now I’m back to that. Find friends who make you laugh. I just want friends in my life who are positive influences — that’s where I’m at now. It’s a nice, healthy, happy state. AL: YOU’RE A WELL-KNOWN ENVIRONMENTALIST. WHAT CAUSES ARE YOU MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT? CT: Well, the world, the planet. The world is getting smaller. I

think we have to reach out and be allies with all of our friends around the world, because you can’t just be an isolated entity and expect to make a difference. There is climate change. There’s no question about it. I went up to the Arctic and lived there for about 10 days. I was able to see the Barnes Ice Cap melting. I was able to talk to the Inuits and find out how they feel and how they’re surviving.

On the opposite end, I went down to the Copper Canyon in Mexico. The only way to see the Tarahumara natives was to hike in with everything on my back. We did that for 10 days, which was really wonderful — hard but wonderful. Again, I love having my feet on the ground. I don’t just fly in an airplane from Los Angeles to New York City; I really do get out there. I’m on the board of Earth Conservation Corps based in Washington, D.C. It’s a wonderful organization that takes inner-city kids and gets them to clean up, for example, the Potomac River. It’s full of tires and refrigerators and all kinds of things. We each do our best to help the planet. AL: ARE THERE ANY EXCITING PROJECTS YOU’RE WORKING ON NOW? CT: Oddly enough, no. It’s the first time in my life when I haven’t

had to set the alarm in the morning and get up and go to work. I’m kind of on sabbatical. I think about writing a book every once in a while, but sometimes I get sick of talking about myself. Today I’m trying to just live in the moment. It’s good to take some time off. I’ve been working since I was 17. AL: WAS GOING ON SABBATICAL PURPOSEFUL? CT: Very little in my life happens without some thought

and desire. I always knew that at a certain point I would just not set the alarm and instead wake up when I wanted to and do what I wanted to that day. A lot of it is reaching out to friends who never knew where I was because I traveled so much. So I’m just establishing a new kind of lifestyle. I’m lucky that I traveled a lot during my modeling days; I saw most of the world. Today, I’m very careful where I choose to go. I just got back from Iceland, which is a beautiful, wonderful country. AL: WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE DESTINATIONS, HAVING TRAVELED THE WORLD? CT: I would say Africa is probably at the top on my list. I lived in Kenya for four years off and on. I was married to [artist and photographer] Peter Beard at the time, and he had a ranch there. It was the most amazing experience. It brought me up to another level in life and taught me so much about the animal kingdom and nature. It was really one of my most important adventures. AL: SPEAKING OF TRAVEL, DO YOU GET BACK TO MINNESOTA MUCH THESE DAYS? CT: Well, I don’t. When [author and explorer] Dan Buettner and I were seeing one another, I would go to Minnesota at least once a month and he would come down here. I grew to know the Twin Cities — I love it there! My mother is thinking about moving back there. So I’ll be back again.

AL: LASTLY, WHAT DOES STYLE MEAN TO YOU? CT: Well, I think it’s your own input on the things that come your

way. It’s enveloping yourself in a world that is attractive to you. When you do that, you’re a maverick in a sense. You’re stepping out on your own, saying, “This is what I like to wear; this is the way I like to decorate my home.” Believe in it and do it.

The third time David Reiling had a gun held to his head in a South-Central Los Angeles bank in the early nineties, he decided that, as much as he loved his job, maybe he shouldn’t continue to press his luck. Reiling, pictured here with wife Kerry, got his start as a teller then worked his way up to banker at the aforementioned institution before getting trained in securities at Citibank. After closing a significant deal, he was poised for a promotion in New York City — then his dad called to see if he wanted to buy a bank in St. Paul’s Frogtown neighborhood. “The bank was built around this model of ‘If the community succeeds, we’ll succeed,’” he says. That appealed to David’s entrepreneurial spirit and his social-justice heart, so he packed his bags and returned to the Twin Cities. Sunrise became a social-enterprise bank, meaning if it did well, it could do good: empowering nonprofits, stimulating job creation and improving access to affordable housing. The institution is also a certified B Corp, focusing intentionally on being not only the best in the world but the best for the world — a title the bank has claimed four years in a row out of 1,600 companies nationally. “We also had to create an environment for our staff to thrive, one that has rigor, fear, excitement, motivation and the ability to try things that may or may not work,” David explains. “We have to give of ourselves — time, talent and treasure. We need to be bigger than just making a dollar.” “We started to grow getting capital into the hands of the Hmong community to fix their homes and buy and grow their businesses — and we kept going from there,” he says. Now he is seeing the progress along the University Avenue Green Line. “We’re reclaiming the urban core one storefront, one building at a time,” he notes. “We try to get that momentum going and be a good partner in making it a good place to invest.” David and his team have been instrumental in helping people with little to no credit get access to prepaid cards and stable loans to keep them afloat. They’ve also leveraged skills in financial technology to help money-transfer apps actually transfer money place to place. “When I started, I thought it would be amazing if we got to $100 million in assets,” he notes. “We’re now at $800 million, going to $1 billion — and there’s no stopping us.” But it’s not just the financial payoff that keeps him and his 200-plus employees going. “At the core, whether you’re rich, poor, big, small, black or white, we are all humans — and human dignity should be more prized,” he says. “I have seen blight everywhere, and the solution is often to just put people ‘over there.’ That never works. You need a richer, fuller place where everyone can do well and be part of the fabric of the community.”

And yet, with all the fanfare for his professional life — from the Museum of Modern Art exhibit to the Prairie Style Passport — little of the spotlight has shone on his fascinating personal life. At the intersection of those two spheres sits Taliesin, Wright’s terrifically tragic pièce de résistance.

By the time he met Martha “Mamah” Borthwick Cheney, the woman who would become his mistress, Wright had more than made a name for himself. She and her husband, Edwin, commissioned him to design and construct their new home in Oak Park, Illinois. (The 1903 brick structure is on the National Register of Historic Places and for a time served as a bed and breakfast.) Though married with six children, Wright fell hard for Mamah (who herself had two children), and their clandestine affair began. It was in 1909 that the two ran off to Europe together in what he called a “voluntary exile into the uncharted and unknown,” leaving behind their families and causing quite a stir amongst high society. When they returned stateside two years later, Wright realized they wouldn’t be welcomed back to Chicago. And so he set out to build them a retreat on his favorite hill in his hometown of Spring Green, Wisconsin. Edwin divorced Mamah in 1911, but Wright’s wife (the first of three) didn’t grant him freedom until 1922 — long after tragedy had struck at Taliesin. The twosome attempted to quietly enjoy the Wisconsin countryside, but the press was tipped off and made its way to the Jones Valley to report on the “love bungalow.” Wright, ever the eccentric, offered up unapologetic explanations: “Two women were necessary for a man of artistic mind,” he said. “One to be mother of his children and the other to be his mental companion, his inspiration and soulmate.” After a career slump due in large part to the scandal, the architect was tapped to design Midway Gardens, a beer hall and entertainment center situated in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood. He was working on the project on August 15, 1914 — the day his lover and six others were brutally murdered at his Wisconsin home. Mamah was enjoying lunch on the porch with her two children, who were visiting for the summer; some of the estate workers, meanwhile, were eating in the main dining room. Serving them was Julian Carlton, a Barbados native who, along with his wife, had been working at Taliesin for a few months. He reportedly had been acting strangely and recently had been asked to leave. After serving the soup, Carlton snuck back to the porch and buried a hatchet in Mamah’s skull, following suit with her children. He then barricaded the home’s doors and set fire to the structure, waiting outside with his axe to attack anyone who attempted to escape. Only two people survived; they ran for help. Carlton was eventually found on the grounds, having swallowed muriatic acid. He was taken to jail and died of starvation several weeks later due to a burned esophagus. His motive for the rampage was never revealed. Wright and his lover’s ex-husband arrived late that night to find a “devastating scene of horror,” as the architect put it. Edwin took his children’s remains back to Chicago to be laid to rest. A broken Wright filled Mamah’s casket with flowers from her garden and buried her himself on the grounds of the nearby chapel. Wright immediately set out to rebuild his Taliesin in honor of his Mamah. And when the home sustained another fire in 1925 (this time due to faulty electrical wiring), he rebuilt again. Indeed, until his dying days, he remained true to his one enduring love: Taliesin.

Now that former Viking Chad Greenway has retired from the NFL, he has turned his attention to a passion project he and his wife, Jenni, envisioned long ago. When they had their first child, it dawned on them: Children’s Minnesota hospitals were a place where they could make a big impact. “We started with how we could reach the greatest number of people,” Chad says. And that was with the innovative digital locker, filled with tech from iPads to PlayStations, digital cameras to Nintendo DS consoles. “We all live with technology, and it can be a good distraction when you might need it most.” “You get addicted to the feeling you get from helping someone without them asking for it,” he muses. Which is why their Lead the Way Foundation has branched out to projects like building a playground at Children’s: “Knowing that it will stand for 10 to 15 years and that

kids will get joy out of it is a great feeling,” he adds. The Greenways have learned that once you start talking about kids, you inevitably come around to the parents. Thus the annual TendHER Heart luncheon was born, which honors mothers who are currently caring for, have cared for or have lost sick children. “We give them some gifts, but more importantly, we give them the microphone, and they just open up,” Chad explains. “It’s wonderful to be able to give them the voice to create this sorority together.” And the Lead the Way Foundation isn’t done yet. “Football gave me an awesome opportunity to make some money as a young person, and now we can really enjoy our children, watch them grow and be a part of their lives,” says Chad. “This isn’t about careers or fame or Twitter. We’ll continue to build these bridges and help people.”

Puustelli project managers and designers can support DIYers looking for guidance, work with architects and builders, or handle the full demo, design and installation. “The flexibility of how we work is really important,” Juola says. “We’re a leader in Finland, and our hope is that we’ll become one here as well.”

The duo behind Luxury Garage Sale is bringing the designer consignment-shopping experience to a whole new level. We’re talking Chanel, Dior and Valentino, from vintage pieces to new overstock all at 10 to 90 percent off. And it’s now in Edina. Dissatisfied with antiquated systems and variable product quality, Lindsay Segal, a former Condé Nast photo stylist and Bloomingdale’s visual stylist, and Brielle Buchberg, a former event planner, decided to redefine consignment, streamlining the process and providing a boutique experience. After throwing a series of well-attended pop-ups, the pair set up shop in Chicago. Based on their rampant success there, they’ve begun expanding across the

country with both pop-up and brick-and-mortar concepts. They also host private events and partner with charities. “We really focus on curating,” Buchberg explains. “There’s no mediocre inventory here, so you don’t have to search for that diamond in the rough.” This process includes rigorous authentication of label, materials and workmanship to ensure all wares are legitimate. “When you come to Luxury Garage Sale, you’re walking into a high-end luxury boutique curated for you,” adds Segal. “Everything is special, and you have a stylist helping you with wardrobing. Plus, if you don’t see something you want, chances are we can get it.”

“I started my own business because I thought we could offer a higher level of quality by doing things our own way,” says Jeff Sanderson, MD, of Sanderson Eye Clinic in Edina. His philosophy is to not sandwich in “a million patients” but instead offer a much more comprehensive experience and service. That tech includes the excimer laser for Lasik, the femtosecond laser for significant astigmatism and cataracts, and extended depth-of-focus lenses for those requiring assistance with both near and far vision. “The technology keeps changing, which makes what we do interesting and fun,” he adds. But there’s an even bigger reward for Sanderson. “It’s liberating for people to be able to see better,” he notes. “It enhances their entire life: seeing nature, seeing the clock when they wake up in the morning. Many people don’t realize how poorly they see. The post-op appointments are always really incredible, when clients see 20/20 or better.”
