elcome to the travel issue of Artful Living. From coverage of the art of packing to “glamping,” we intend to inspire you to take a trip or just dream about what it might be like to transport yourself to another place. Don’t miss our feature by Rudy Maxa, “A Colorful Life,” the story of LeRoy Neiman. It’s an interesting read about his rise from a broken St. Paul home to become one of America’s most prosperous artists. Our original content is proudly created by a brilliant group of contributors and editors. Every issue is packed with a unique collection of interesting articles about home, fashion, food, travel and real estate. You can find us online at artfullivingmagazine.com. Sign up for our monthly Artful Spark newsletter, and receive a free copy of the magazine by liking us on Facebook. This magazine is brought to you by a group of top-shelf advertisers. We are grateful for these marketing partners. If you like Artful Living, let them know by patronizing their businesses. In the craziness of our daily routine, the influences of our family, friends and jobs are gradually entrenched into our beliefs and opinions — perhaps to the point of altering the person we think we might want to be. One way to get a clear view is to get away from it all. It’s the separation from our homes, obligations and expectations that allows us to renew, gain perspective and turn back on a happier course. ExpertFlyer.com

makes finding award seats across a range of airlines easy. As frequent fliers know, airline sites can be confusing and usually are terrible at searching alliance partner options. If you have Delta miles, for example, you can search partners Aeroflot, Aerolineas Argentinas, Air Tahiti Nui, China Airlines, China Eastern, China Southern and Saudi Arabian Airlines, among others, all at once.

Credit-Card-Match.com lists the credit cards that will deliver the most frequent-flyer miles as a sign-up bonus as well as those with the lowest interest rates or best cash-back offers.

AutoSlash.com

searches available discounts and tracks car-rental rates. The site will automatically rebook you if prices drop after you make a reservation.

ContextTravel.com is a network of professors, researchers and experts in culture, archeology, art, cuisine and history who lead in-depth walking seminars in two dozen of the world’s great cities, from London to Shanghai, Kyoto to Budapest.

Fortnighter.com

lists travel writers in your destination who can provide an insider’s guide for what to do, where to stay and where to eat (or avoid), based on your criteria.

HotelTonight

is a smartphone app that’s useful for last-minute, discount hotel stays in major cities. By noon in each city’s time zone, it posts fire-sale prices for hotels that night in every category, from budget to luxury.

MyTSA

Interior designer Mary Lauer specializes in design for happy homes. | BY MARGUERITE HAPPE

T

he notion of visiting your happy place is often utilized by yogis in search of introspective meditation. For interior designer Mary Lauer, the idea is more attainable than a remote Costa Rican beach — your happy place can be your home, and she can design it for you. In 2012, Lauer moved que será, her exceptionally curated home-furnishings and interior-design boutique, from Edina’s Galleria (where her lifestyle children’s boutique, Oh Baby!, remains) to a remodeled space in downtown Excelsior. The new locale provides room for Lauer and the other designers on staff to focus on the heart and soul of the business: sustainable, comfortable, creative interior design. The move accomplished some important goals for Lauer. It brought the boutique to downtown Excelsior, a short jog from her home and a block from the family playground: beautiful Lake Minnetonka. It also enabled Lauer to build the store according to her personal vision, without the constraints imposed by operating in a shopping center. The new que será truly reflects the personality of its owner, which is the aim of all of Lauer’s design projects. “Good design,” she explains, “is the end result of understanding your client and marshaling resources to create a space that they will be happy with.” Working with Lauer on anything from a home remodel to a paint consultation is akin to consulting with a best friend — a friend who happens to have acute business acumen and 20 years experience sourcing the most stunning furniture and home décor on the market. You’ll no longer have the need to visit your happy place — you’ll be living there.

Time Flies Private aviation leader NetJets saves you time in the skies. |

I

f you’re the type to take personal-finance lessons from Benjamin Franklin, his legendary “time is money” advice is most likely a core value. That’s where NetJets, a Berkshire Hathaway company, comes in. As the worldwide leader in private aviation, NetJets offers fractional ownership, leasing and rental of private business jets. With as little as four hours notice, the company can have a jet ready and waiting at an airfield near you. Popular destinations for Minnesotans who are part of the

NetJets family include Scottsdale, Arizona; Naples, Florida; Aspen, Colorado; and Palm Springs, California. Not only is time of the essence, safety is paramount: Meticulous standards and inspections ensure that any jet will be ready to depart at a moment’s notice. Wise words from Berkshire Hathaway CEO and frequent NetJets flier Warren Buffett summarize the reason the company remains top of mind in the skies: “Spend whatever it takes to be the safest and most secure. Then, spend whatever it takes to stay that way.”

rom Vanity Fair’s “My Desk” feature to Pinterest boards of dreamy workspaces, peeking into desks and offices has become the latest trend — and for good reason. Learning where inspiration and productivity happen is a natural curiosity, and we love to see where our fellow humans spend 10 hours of their day. It’s an insight into their personality and often their work. For Olympic athlete and St. Paul Athletic Club swim coach Elena Jacobsen, her workspace is a bit more watery than the norm. Up on the eighth floor of the St. Paul Athletic Club, the dreamy swan mosaic tiles and columns surrounding the pool have a quality reminiscent of the famous pool spas of Russia, Ukraine and Finland — perhaps why Jacobsen, a Russian export, feels a connection with the body of water that is her office.

38 Artful Living

| Winter 2014

“When I walk into the pool, I feel like I’m home: warm and cozy, almost like I’m in pajamas,” Jacobsen says with a smile. “That’s probably why I’ve been working for so many years with this pool. All the energy and clean beauty of it make you feel so great.” Jacobsen knows the strenuous nature of competitive swimming firsthand from her five years on the Soviet Union Olympic swim team while simultaneously working her way to a PhD on pedagogy in swim practice at the Soviet Union Research Institute. Since transitioning to teaching both children and adults after her athletic career, Jacobsen has spent the past 12 years giving lessons at the St. Paul Athletic Club. “Knowing how to swim changes lives and saves lives,” says Jacobsen. “I want to do this for the rest of my life, because this is what I love to do.”

Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not, said Ralph Waldo Emerson. The reminders of a luxurious hospitality experience or travel adventure of a lifetime often come in small packages, apt to turn up in a coat pocket or suitcase corner years later, accompanied by a rush of nostalgia. Though matchbooks are less ubiquitous these days, these 10 iconic hotels, resorts and castles offer beautiful ways to carry your travel memories home with you. Next time you find yourself at the reception desk of a luxury hotel, ask, and oftentimes you will still find some, lovely as ever.

Red Hot Design pals partner up for one incredible auction. | BY WENDY LUBOVICH

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY SOTHEBY’S AUCTION HOUSE

hat do you do with a customdesigned red leather Hermès saddle, or a one-off white Steinway piano with a secret red interior? If you are musician and philanthropist Bono, you call Sotheby’s in New York and put it all up for sale. That was the idea behind last fall’s (RED) Auction, celebrating all things cool in design and innovation. The sale was collected and curated by Apple’s Jonathan (Jony) Ive, designer of the iPod and the iPhone, and his pal Marc Newson, known for his sleek airplane interiors and other industrial products. The auction raised a total of $26 million: $13 million from the sale itself with a matching $13 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Together the duo went on a global shopping spree, collecting, commissioning and creating one-of-a-kind objects that encompass lighting, rare automobiles and even space travel. “Each piece represents the value of thoughtful design,” says Ive. “What we create for each other is not only a comment on our culture but of course in many ways defines it.” Careful thought went into a one-off Leica digital camera that was designed for the sale by both gentlemen, as well as a Jetson-sleek aluminum desk. The rest of the 40-some lots were specially commissioned or hand-selected by the pair. On offer were a solid rose-gold pair of Apple EarPods, a pair of Damien Hirst Spin Chairs and even a Russian cosmonaut suit. Fast friends, the design-obsessed duo took the project seriously. They were fanatical about every detail, down to the contrasting stitching on the iconic Hermès Cavale saddle and the smooth finish on the Henning Koppel silver pitcher, with its customized lacquered red interior. Many of the objects are editions 01/01, meant to stir feelings of both covet and charity. The sale followed the original Sotheby’s (RED) auction in 2008 by Bono and Hirst, which raised more than $40 million to fight AIDS in Africa. Proceeds from this sale went to the expanded Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. “When you think of Jony and Marc, you think of design which is both iconic and sublime,” says Bono. “Each bang of that hammer [raised] critical dollars to fight AIDS.”

gainst the backdrop of the Sawtooth Mountains, Bluefin Bay Resort offers the perfect vantage point to experience the exhilarating natural phenomenon that is Lake Superior — the granddaddy of all lakes — as its dramatic waters lap against the rocky shores. These days, time seems to pass more quickly. With increasingly demanding schedules, it can be hard to make time for the truly important things in life. Sometimes we need to disconnect, relax and enjoy time spent with the ones we love. With a host of year-round activities to fill your days and nights, Bluefin Bay is the ideal destination for family fun, outdoor adventure, a romantic rendezvous, girlfriend getaways and, most importantly, unplugging from everyday strife. There are miles of winding paths to get your blood flowing on a vigorous hike while taking in the stunning beauty of the Temperance River. Or grab a bicycle and rise to the challenge of more than 10 miles of paved trails. Or, if you’re in a mellow mood, get your Zen on at yoga class or bliss out in the serenity of the Waves of Superior Spa. At the end of the day, draw close to a roaring campfire to roast s’mores, unwind with a glass of wine by your very own fireplace or cozy up to the bar to enjoy live music. Whatever your objective, Bluefin Bay is a great place to get away from it all.

Remote Luxury From bush to beach, this tome checks in at Australia and New Zealand’s most exotic destinations. | BY MARGUERITE HAPPE

Rush hour is nonexistent — unless you count a wombat or two crossing the path,” writes Mandy Herbet in her description of the Bay of Fires Lodge in Tasmania, Australia. This is more often the case than not in Herbet’s revised collection of Australia and New Zealand’s staggeringly extraordinary hotels and resorts, Remote Luxury: Top Resorts Down Under. From New Zealand’s pristine coasts to Australia’s humid rainforests, destinations are categorized by geography. Getaways in the outback, islands, wilderness, beach, rainforest and country are labeled accordingly, incorporating details about what to pack (including, at times, “a keen sense of adventure” or “lots of energy”), when to visit, the landscape and the architectural style of each locale. Prepare for a serious case of wanderlust while flipping through the pages of gorgeous photography. Descriptions of resorts range from internationally acclaimed Condé Nast favorites to undiscovered working cattle stations in the outback. This is one of the very few areas of the world where resort guests can take their morning dip in a crocodile-proof infinity pool or hike through a rainforest for three days to arrive at their final destination. For adventure seekers, barramundi or trout fishing, bathing in natural springs, and nighttime crocodile spotting are on the docket. On the other end of the spectrum, travelers can literally unplug at the electrical-socket-free Sal Salis resort in Cape Range National Park, Australia, and exchange their cell phones for a swim with whale sharks or a five-star meal at tables surrounded by kangaroos. Whether you hop the next seaplane to Tasmania or simply dream of rainforests and koala bears, this collection is a lovely reminder that neither adventure nor relaxation are beyond your reach — they’re simply a little farther down under.

The Art of Packing Embrace the list. | BY CHRIS PLANTAN

58 Artful Living

| Winter 2014

PHOTOGRAPHY BY WING TA

W

here would we be without our lists? From our daily to-dos to our rankings, roundups and recaps, our lists are our lives. Lists help us navigate, manage, set goals and make plans. We can barely make it to the corner store without one — so why would we dare travel to new or foreign lands sans list? When it comes to packing for travel, our lists are not just for our planning; they are part of the journey itself. Our packing list signals that our trip is real. Whether you are heading to a far-off destination or on a weekend roadtrip, a well-crafted list is no different than any other planning the adventure might require. It begins with understanding your destination and the type of journey you wish to have. Focus on what you will need and try not to stray as you’re packing. There is nothing worse than heaving around an oversize, overstuffed piece of luggage. Pack what you need and pick up what you want on the go — it will mean more that way. Like all handwritten artifacts, our packing lists say more about us than simply what we plan to wear. They are a snapshot of the person before the trip, a hypothesis, an expectation. They are mementos to save and include with the photographs, tickets and other keepsakes one holds onto after a memorable getaway. So, consider the art of it all. Embrace your doodles as noteworthy. Use color to prioritize and categorize, if you wish. And understand that your list is not my list — it is uniquely you. However you choose to document this important part of your trip, do so with care. For a packing list says as much about the traveler as it does about the trip.

Swim Pros

Big Island Swim & Surf Company makes buying beachwear a breeze. | BY HAYLEY DULIN

I

n December 2012, Big Island Swim & Surf Company opened its doors in Excelsior with the mission to make the swimwear shopping experience easier and more enjoyable for the whole family. We sat down with the team to get the inside scoop on all things swim.

In what way are you changing the swimwear shopping experience? Most women dread the thought of shopping for swimwear, but we believe that by focusing on the right suit for your body type, you can leave feeling excited to wear your next suit. Our staff members are fit specialists who are trained to identify body type and choose suits that are complementary to a client’s needs as well as their wants. In addition to our one-on-one service, we offer a wide selection of swimwear, clothing and accessories for women, men and children. There’s something for everyone! What are some common misconceptions consumers have about swimwear shopping? People have a hard time believing they can look and feel good in a suit. If you come with an open mind and a willingness to try different styles and sizes, we promise that you will leave happy. Vendor sizing varies, making it important to focus not on size, but rather on fit. Clients often believe that by going up a size, they will achieve the coverage they

are looking for, but in all honesty, it’s more likely that the style is not right for them. It is also important to remember that all trends are not created equal. High-waisted bottoms and cropped tops are not right for every body type. There are plenty of trends out there, so make sure you are picking the ones that are right for you. Can you share some tips for finding the perfect suit? As we said earlier, keep an open mind. It’s funny how often clients leave with a style they thought they could never wear. If you’re not comfortable relying on one of our fit specialists, bring along someone that you trust and know will be honest. Try your suit on at home. We believe we’ve mastered fitting-room lighting, but it is always important to make sure you are comfortable in your own environment as well. What can we expect from Big Island Swim & Surf Company in the future? We are excited to bring our in-store experience online. Finding the right suit online can be even more difficult than it is in the store, but it is possible. We believe the online experience can be just as personal, and we are developing ways to make at-home shopping more successful. Stay tuned! eware, aviatophobics. Those with a fear of flying will not enjoy the adrenaline-filled, roller coaster–esque journey from Caribbean hub St. Martin to the exclusive St. Barthélemy. The world-renowned exclusivity of this tiny French island is partially due to its accessibility; no amount of money can purchase a private jet able to land on St. Barts. All visitors hop on the same puddle-jumper, zoom through rocky landscapes and sharp nosedives, and feel the pilot slam on the brakes just before the landing strip abruptly ends on St. Jean Beach. The short flight is not for the faint of heart. St. Barts features manicured beaches, low crime rates and a noticeable lack of fast food. The main attraction is the scenery, and the world-class restaurants, shops and clubs host scores of select tourists each year. But beauty has its cost; the island lives up to its reputation of being ridiculously expensive.

Extraordinary views, soft sand and the pride of being one of the few willing to traverse the landscape await you in the crescent-shaped bay.

collage || 48 hours Rock On

Inside a world-famous luxury hotel.

On The Rocks

Eden Rock began as the home of Rémy de Haenen, adventurer, aviator and the former mayor of St. Barts. He first landed his two-seater plane on the grassy meadow that is now the airport in 1945. Eight years later, he purchased the acreage that would become his home for $200 and enlisted the locals to begin construction. Roguishly handsome and charismatic, he attracted the attention of Hollywood’s most adventuresome stars, which is how Eden Rock was born. He counted among his guests and friends Jacques Cousteau, Greta Garbo and Howard Hughes. The Rockefeller and Rothschild families first came to visit and then purchased land and built homes nearby. The new owners, David and Jane Matthews, stumbled upon the property in 1995 while island-hopping on a friend’s yacht. They subsequently bought the home and undertook the job of restoring the original buildings. In the process, new structures were built that complemented the style and spirit of de Haenen. With 34 unique rooms, suites and villas, the resort will amaze even the most seasoned traveler. Revel in the magic of the Howard Hughes or Greta Garbo suites, where both icons once stayed, or opt for the newer garden cottages. A relaxed barefoot ambiance sets the tone. The aptly named Sand Bar with Jean-Georges Vongerichten is open for breakfast and lunch, and a DJ spins sounds to pair with cool cocktails in the evening. On The Rocks with Jean-Georges, open for dinner, celebrates the best of Vongerichten’s personal favorite dishes, a world-class wine selection and a relaxed, island-chic atmosphere. For the absolute pinnacle of opulence, chose the Villa Rockstar, starting at $19,950 a night. This over-the-top, 16,000-square-foot mansion features four master suites, a private pool, 24-hour butler service, a gym, office, garages and cars. Of particular interest, the villa is home to a fully equipped recording studio, including the 1973 Neve recording console used by John Lennon to lay down “Imagine.” The Eden Rock Gallery acts not only as a commercial art gallery with visiting artists on the rise but also as a studio where inspired guests can put paint to canvas. Every need you have will be met by an attractive, expert French staff. The concierge can accommodate your every desire, such as massages on the beach and the use of various water toys, including kayaks, paddleboards and seabobs. Exclusive, exceptional and elite, the magical alcove of Eden Rock is addictive. It’s no wonder guests return over and over again.

West Side Story A New York City pied-à-terre gets the glam treatment. | BY BILLY BESON, ASID

T

he Upper West Side is known as one of Manhattan’s most prosperous neighborhoods. The eclectic mix of its residents is reflected in the design of this pied-à-terre. The sparkle and energy of the city is echoed by the vibrancy of the finishes and furnishings. Keeping the lack of space in mind, I designed the stacked storage unit with its silver metallic lacquer and drawers that open on opposite sides. It acts as a catchall for hats, gloves, scarves and other accessories as well as a display pedestal for the metal sphere sculpture. Before architect Andrea Swan put pencil to paper, she helped the client conduct a punch list, identifying areas that could be improved upon, and helped locate an appropriate contractor. Once Swan began the design, they focused on the most minimal changes possible with the most drastic impact. The foyer became a focal point, rather than a boring entry hall. The main living area transformed to a multifunctional salon, providing eating, reading, drinking and lounging space for every day and hosting guests. Boring drywall ceilings became focal points with wraparound molding and aligning box beams. The overall shape of the space resembles that of a townhouse — much longer than it is wide. We overcame this challenge by creating a sense of pause at the entry by mirroring the main wall and framing it in rich walnut. Directly across from the mirror we replaced the traditional double-entry closet doors with a singular panel of

anodized ground aluminum framed in the same rich walnut. Hanging on a stainless-steel track, the door slides with the touch of a finger. In and of itself, it becomes its own piece of art. The stainless-steel horizontal bands, crystal-bead wall covering and curved tech lighting guide you to the salon, kitchen and master bedroom. Red being one of the client’s favorite colors, we saw a great opportunity to use a vibrant wall covering as a backdrop for a main salon based in a neutral platinum color scheme. The pearlescence of the capiz-shell wall covering adds texture, glam and a beautiful reflective quality. Swan added dimension and substance to the space when she designed the box-beam ceiling, with its square medallion that houses the art deco–style dining area chandelier. Her detailing of the architecture adds a great sense of refinement and sophistication. The master suite has been designed as a getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city. Its creamy backgrounds create a soft, soothing environment that contrasts the drama and boldness of the main salon. The silver leaf four-poster bed recalls the silver and platinum tones throughout the apartment.

NEW YORK SLEEP

HOTEL NOIR The Viceroy channels old New York.

POSH POULET Comfort food gets the Upper East Side treatment.

| BY WENDY LUBOVICH Rotisserie Georgette, 14 E. 60th St., New York 212-390-8060 // rotisserieg.com

The new Rotisserie Georgette is an artful blend of simplicity and luxury. Reminiscent of French outdoor markets with bronzed chickens turning on the spit, the star of this restaurant is the luscious meats and poultry slowly cooking on an open flame. “You’ll smell the rotisserie right when you walk in the door, and you’ll know exactly why you are here — you’ll taste it in your mind,” says the ever-stylish Georgette Farkas, former marketing director for celebuchef Daniel Boulud, now striking out on her own. Sumptuous potato dishes, seasonal vegetables and house-made desserts round out the pared-down French feast. Executive Chef David Malbequi helms the semi-open kitchen in the 90-seat restaurant, situated in an elegant 1903 landmarked Beaux Arts building with soaring ceilings and rich moldings, right across the street from Barneys. “Doing simple well, it turns out, is not so simple,” Farkas says. The native New Yorker and lifelong Francophile has infused the space with antique European tiles, lush fabrics and vintage monogrammed flatware. A savvy mixture of comfort food and sophistication, Rotisserie Georgette is both refined and relaxed. “The look and feel is Louis XV meets the kitchen,” Farkas muses. Indeed, chicken has never been so chic.

The shiny black Viceroy hotel on Manhattan’s East 57th Street feels both timeless and modern. The double-height lobby is cinematic, with smoky lighting, swirling marble and a custom fragrance lightly scenting the air. It’s perfectly tailored and richly crafted, like a men’s vintage suit. Designed by Roman and Williams, the team behind The Standard, High Line and the lobby of the Ace Hotel, the idea behind the Viceroy was to capture the vintage glamour of New York. “We were inspired by film noir: notoriously stylish, a collision of the old world and the new world,” says Robin Standefer of the design firm. With the look of an art deco ocean liner, guest rooms feature exotic woods, rich leathers and vintage wallpaper. And best of all, the elegant floor-to-ceiling windows actually open to let in fresh air. “There is a sound that is distinctively New York,” says Viceroy CEO Bill Walshe. “We want guests to hear the faint hum of the city.” Yet for all its polish, the Viceroy New York wants to be the un-boutique hotel. “I don’t believe our guests want us to be cool; they want us to be relevant,” quips Walshe. “We are hosts first and always. We’re here to serve, and we’re proud to serve.”

STORIED RETAIL It’s all about the experience at this Chelsea concept shop. | BY WENDY LUBOVICH Story, 144 10th Ave., New York 212-242-4853 // thisisstory.com

Right alongside the stylish art galleries in Chelsea, a new kind of retail venture is on exhibition. Story sells products, changes over like a gallery and has the know-how of a magazine. The brainchild of Rachel Shechtman, who has served as a brand consultant for companies like Kraft and TOMS shoes, the shop keeps evolving right before shoppers’ very eyes. Every eight weeks, Story starts anew — the layout, the premise and the products. The latest theme, Home for the Holidays, feels like a modern, cozy cabin and features gifts, accessories and edibles from little-known small businesses. The Hidden Message Necklace uses forged letters made from industrial metal techniques, while a miniature felted taxidermy sculpture looks artfully tongue-in-cheek. Products like these are discovered at Story’s regular Pitch Night, where entrepreneurs get a chance to plug their products to trend experts. “We’ve literally had a pitch product in the store the very next day,” says Assistant Manager Zach Green. “It’s inspiring for the maker and for us.” Pop-up events pop up as well, like the free hot shave offered in a vintage barber’s chair, all to promote a new razor. “The idea is to keep coming back to see what’s happening next,” Green says. “It’s about experience per square foot.”

LOS ANGELES EAT

SEAFOOD BY THE SEA Downtown’s favorite fish place branches out.

BY RUDY MAXA

Water Grill, 1401 Ocean Ave., Santa Monica 310-394-5669 // watergrill.com

Downtown Los Angeles’s power-lunch folks for 24 years have flocked to the soothing interior of the Water Grill for seafood, but now the restaurant has opened a place on the beach. Well, above the beach, on Santa Monica’s Ocean Avenue. And while it has a somewhat incongruous dark interior (blame it on its nautical theme), the eatery’s multiple, big windows open to the sea breeze on mild days, making a most agreeable setting for lunch or dinner. And the menu is as bright as a lunch on the fantail of a millionaire’s yacht in the Mediterranean on a July afternoon. With a wide range of grilled fish, from Dover sole to swordfish and crab cakes that come close to the ones I’ve been eating for decades on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, this is the place along Los Angeles’s coastline for a fish feast. English chef Dan King, who counts Alain Ducasse among his mentors, treats the bounty of the sea with respect and without a lot of froufrou. There’s a raw bar to the left as you enter, a nicely tiled bar that serves complete meals to the right and a cheery wait staff. Go fish!

A FAMILY AFFAIR Luxury Italian jeweler Bucellati exemplifies tradition.

|

BY KATE NELSON

Buccellati, 62 E. Oak St., Chicago 312-600-9224 // buccellati.com

Step into Buccellati’s new two-story, 1,752-square-foot flagship shop on tony Oak Street and enter a world where tradition reigns supreme. Known the world over for its expert craftsmanship and timeless elegance, the luxury Italian brand has been the purveyor of impeccably handcrafted jewelry and tabletop masterpieces in silver and gold since 1750. “These pieces will never be obsolete — they will never be out of style. They’re timeless,” says Marketing Manager Marit Bohbot, speaking of Buccellati’s signature engraving, which has featured the same Renaissance-era workmanship and attention to detail since the brand’s inception. She adds that many aficionados’ infatuations are born as collections are passed down from generation to generation. Indeed, even the Smithsonian has recognized the brand’s significance, exhibiting more than 75 Buccellati hallmark creations in 2000. The locale in the storied Esquire Theater was handpicked as the jeweler’s fourth U.S. outpost; neighboring retailers helping revitalize the historic theater include Christian Louboutin, Tom Ford, and Dolce & Gabbana. The Chicago store offers a departure into a more modern décor where new meets old: a stunning Murano chandelier, smoky mirrors, signature Italian silk walls, a fully restored 19th century neoclassical pharmacy piece and a private shopping area complete with champagne. Known as the “prince of goldsmiths,” Mario Buccellati revived the family tradition in 1903. The brand is now overseen by the legendary family’s fifth generation lead by Andrea Buccellati, who carries on the heritage of high-quality craftsmanship, enduring elegance and understated sophistication — a family tradition well worth upholding.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY BUCCELLATI

There are more than 12,000 restaurants in Chicago, but somehow the city has never had a place quite like Tanta, the new Peruvian cebicheria from South American culinary star Gaston Acurio, who also operates the Michelin three-star-rated Astrid & Gastón in Lima, Peru. Tanta is an elegant undertaking, a culinary mash-up of Japanese and Peruvian influences and impeccable technique. You may think you know ceviche, but you haven’t tried Acurio’s cebiches (the Peruvian spelling). Made fresh to order, the cebiche chifa features lime-cured hunks of bass tossed with roasted peanuts, crispy wontons and spicy ginger threads. The mixture of smoke, fresh acidity and Asian spice is more similar to a great piece of sashimi than the mushy Mexican-style ceviche most people are familiar with. Chicago does have a few rustic home-style Peruvian spots, but Tanta blows them out of the water with its causita clasica, whipped potatoes dabbed with huancaína (a sauce of condensed milk, queso fresco and fiery aji chilies) heaped with crab, avocado, tomato and egg. The velvety potatoes compete with the richness and luxury of the pommes purée from French legend Joel Robuchon. Every good potato deserves a nice hunk of meat, and Acurio’s adobo de ternera, melting veal cheeks bathed in a garlic, paprika and vinegar–seasoned gravy, is just the thing. While the cuisine is elegant, unique and refined, Tanta is casual and relaxing. The eatery features mahogany wood slatting, a healthy bit of bar seating and a huge, bright-colored mural depicting the culture of Peru. It’s a great spot to throw down some Pisco sour cocktails and while away a night to the ambient electronica that always seems to be playing over the house sound system.

CHICAGO SLEEP

MODERN MEETS MAD MEN Chicago’s newest hotel is also its hautest.

|

BY FRANK ROFFERS

The Langham, Chicago, 330 N. Wabash Ave., Chicago 312-923-9988 // chicago.langhamhotels.com

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY THE LANGHAM, CHICAGO

At 52 stories high, the one-time IBM Building was the third tallest in Chicago when it was built in 1971. Designed in dark-tinted glass on the Chicago River by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, it was considered cutting edge for its day. Today, it houses The Langham’s 316 guest rooms and its Chinese-inspired spa. “Mies,” as he liked to be called, never saw the building completed as he died at the age of 83 in 1969 — the same year construction started. It was among his final completed works. The Langham commissioned his grandson, architect Dirk Lohan (who apprenticed with his grandfather during the building’s planning phases), to design the ground-floor lobby: a sleek, window-walled foyer furnished with a pair of sofas designed by Mies but never commercially reproduced. Founded in 1865 in London, The Langham hotel chain is known for its unique sites, such as a former Federal Reserve Bank in Boston. The Chicago hotel marks the fourth U.S. outpost, with sister properties in New York and Pasadena, California. Regulars can expect Langham’s signature style, including greeters in pink suits; a London taxi in the same trademark hue, which serves as the house car; and Tiffin at The Langham, the hotel’s afternoon tea service. The Pavilion, the second-floor lounge and gathering place, is inspired by one of Mies’s most famous designs, the Barcelona Pavilion, created for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition. Guest rooms include touches of Mies’s midcentury modern style, featuring granite, marble and travertine stone. And the furniture looks right off the set of Mad Men. Among the midcentury design, modern amenities abound. Case in point: the 55-inch flat-screen TVs, high-end stereo systems and luxury baths with rainfall showers. State-of-the-art glass panels separating the bedroom from the bath turn opaque at the press of a button. Chinese for “flowering water,” the Chuan Spa offers treatments emphasizing traditional Chinese medicine, including acupuncture and moxibustion. Tim Stewart, formerly of Tru, leads the kitchen at the hotel’s main restaurant, Travelle. Stop in for moderately priced Mediterranean fare. Opt for one of the 48 appointed suites and be amazed at the level of service and comfort. The club level, with its richly textured interiors, offers luxurious privileges. Complimentary amenities range from private registration for arrivals and departures, butler service, daily breakfast buffet, afternoon tea, and evening cocktails and canapés. It does not get any better than this.

A Colorful Life LeRoy Neiman rose from a broken St. Paul home to become one of America’s most prosperous artists. | BY RUDY MAXA

W

the artist’s way

LeRoy Neiman’s creative talent helped him carve out a special niche.

hoever thought the 10-year-old kid carving crude tattoos of comic-book characters with a steel-tipped ink pen on the arms of his classmates at St. Vincent de Paul school would become one of America’s most successful artists? That his wasted hours in the pool halls of St. Paul would cultivate his taste for characters? That his fascination with the huge, onyx sculpture in St. Paul’s City Hall, “Indian God of Peace,” would foster his appreciation for form and oversize art? Certainly not LeRoy Neiman’s mother, who threw away his early comic-book art because she thought “any kid could draw if he wanted to.” Not the nuns who discovered the blistered skin of his tattooed schoolmates and promised to find the culprit to give him a “thwacking he won’t forget.” Neiman, he with the outsized mustache and the dark looks of a South American bandito, was on the road to nowhere as a kid growing up in St. Paul’s Frogtown neighborhood. But his art saved him, and it saved him spectacularly, leading him to a long career as the chronicler of prizefights, movie stars, Olympic Games, Formula 1 races, and the international watering holes and resorts peopled by what came to be known as the world’s jet set. “He was a very stylish guy,” remembers Twin Cities sculptor and Neiman collector Bill Mack, who often visited the artist in New York City. “He’d walk into a building, and you knew he was LeRoy Neiman. You wouldn’t know Jasper Johns if he walked in. But you knew LeRoy.” It wasn’t just the mustache that sometimes curved all the way around his cheeks, ending within half an inch of his earlobes. There was the trademark cigar, maybe an open-collar silk shirt worn untucked. And there was that swept-back mane of hair, silver as he aged and still luxurious at his death in the summer of 2012 at age 91. Neiman graduated from the school of hard knocks and moved into a world as vivid and splashy as the paintings that made him famous, kaleidoscopes of color and life that excited his fans even as critics dismissed him. At the end of his days, Neiman triumphed. His fortune and fame grew, and his artwork fetched higher and higher prices. And the kid from Van Buren Avenue did it his way.

factory foreman, lent the artist his last name. As a youngster, Neiman hung around with poor kids and toughs, sometimes jumping on trains to ride the rails with hobos before hitchhiking back home. During summers he worked on his grandmother’s farm in Braham. In St. Paul, Neiman studied the portraits of former governors at the state capitol, noting the portraitists’ techniques. He walked among the mansions on Summit Avenue, though he would later write in his autobiography, All Told, “I was never envious, just curious. I had heard enough about the loveless lives of folks on the hill, but how could [their lives] be worse than ours down in gasoline alley? A lifetime later, when I saw that world up close enough to paint its brash, brassy life of conspicuous consumption, I never lost sight of what it looked like from the bottom up.” He began climbing the ladder to the top of the art world when his sixth-grade teacher, Sister Marie de Lourdes, submitted his crayon drawing of a northern trout from Milles Lacs

hile doing illustrations for a major Chicago department store, Carson Pirie Scott & Co., Neiman met a copywriter who wanted to start a magazine targeted squarely at men. And so began Playboy. By the fifth issue in 1954, Neiman was illustrating pieces in Hugh Hefner’s fledgling magazine. He also met another copywriter at Carson’s: Janet Byrne, who would become his wife until his death.

LeRoy Neiman grew up with his brother and their single mother in this unremarkable St. Paul home.

LeRoy Neiman quite intentionally invented himself as a flamboyant artist in much the same way that I became Mr. Playboy,” Hugh Hefner once remarked. Neiman agreed. “I guess I created LeRoy Neiman,” he said. “Nobody else told me how to do it.” Neiman was formed in the crucible of a broken home and the streets of St. Paul. Born in Braham, he, his brother and his mother, Lydia Serline, were abandoned by his dad, a drifter named Charles Julius Runquist, a few years after Neiman’s birth. But his spirited and attractive mother, a teetotaler who won dance competitions doing the Charleston, shrugged off Runquist and moved with her two young sons to the big city of St. Paul. There, she went through two more marriages, and one of Neiman’s stepfathers, a Polish-German-American leather

Lake to an art contest. It won an award, though Neiman later noted that “nobody noticed.” But he was on his way. As a teenager, Neiman frequented St. Paul fight clubs and began sketching boxers, a passion that would stay with him the rest of his life. When traveling carnivals came to town, he drew sword swallowers, fire-eaters and “hootchie cootchie girls.” He idolized gangsters and sought them out in the clubs carved from the sandstone cliffs along the Mississippi River. Neiman wasn’t much for pastoral scenes — he was attracted to the outliers, to life’s grand spectacles. He joined the Army at age 22 and worked as a cook during World War II. On D-day plus six, he stormed Omaha Beach in Normandy, France, and eventually entered Paris after the fall of the Germans. For fun, he illustrated the walls of mess halls with drawings of pretty women and romanced as many of them as he could. In 1946, Neiman returned to St. Paul and, courtesy of the GI Bill, studied briefly at the St. Paul School of Art before moving south to study at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Chicago was Neiman’s lucky city. In 1952, he spied an apartment building janitor carting half-empty cans of high-gloss enamel paints to the trash. Neiman asked if he could have them, and thus was born his technique of, as he put it, “dribbling, splattering, puddling and meandering [paint] like multicolored snakes” on canvas that he then spread using an artist’s palette knife and basic plastering tools. It was the technique he used the rest of his career. He began winning awards, including a second prize for “Men, Boats and the Sea” at the Minnesota State Show in 1954; the piece was later hung at the Walker Art Center for a collectors exhibition. He’d send paintings to his mother, who would enter them in local contests and proudly collect the awards.

feature || leroy neiman “Painting is making invisible things visible.” – LEROY NEIMAN Neiman’s works, New York Times art critic Hilton Kramer remarked, “That might be difficult — I never think of him.” Upon Neiman’s death, the Times labeled him an “archetypal hack” whose popularity stemmed from “his ambitiously opportunistic personality and his position as Hugh Hefner’s court artist. ... With his ever-present cigar and enormous mustache, he was a cliché of the bon vivant and a bad artist in every way.” Neiman professed not to care about his toughest critics, though he hardly ignored the art establishment. He founded (and reportedly endowed with $6 million) the LeRoy Neiman Center for Print Studies at Columbia University in 1996. A year before his death, he and his wife donated $5 million to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago to build a new student center. He’d not only studied there, but he’d also taught there for a decade before and during his Playboy years. “I started collecting his art in the ’80s when I met him,” recalls Mack, who works from his

Neiman and Hefner were a natural match, and the success of Playboy opened the doors of a new life. His first illustration, for a story about a jazz singer who committed suicide, won a prestigious award for art direction, and other magazine editors began assigning him work. But Hefner wanted Neiman on his team exclusively, and so began a relationship that served both men well. Hefner decided to play to one of Neiman’s main talents: the ability to paint so quickly that he could take in a tableau — a fancy restaurant, a boxing match, a beach at St. Tropez — and render it into a painting in record time. His work managed to capture not only the setting and its occupants but also the energy and Zeitgeist of the moment: thoroughbreds straining to cross the finish line at the Kentucky Derby, the crowd at Maxim’s in Paris, the clash of pro football players, a tennis player reaching for a serve in a stadium with an audience as colorful as a patchwork quilt in the background — nothing seemed too large for Neiman to embrace in a painting. He sketched sports and Olympic games live for ABC, NBC and CBS. For 15 years, with a seemingly unlimited expense account, Neiman contributed illustrations from around

the world for Playboy’s feature “Man at His Leisure.” He created a simple sketch that became almost as iconic as the magazine’s trademarked bunny: a sexy, pixie of a woman in thigh-high stockings nicknamed a “femlin” who posed in seemingly endless forms to punctuate the magazine’s party-joke page. Neiman’s association with Playboy was a double-edged sword. It granted him entrée to big events and brought him fame and fortune — by one estimate, more than 150,000 of his prints have been purchased with an estimated market value exceeding $400 million. He donated art frequently to charities, and his works hung in the Art Institute of Chicago, the Whitney Museum, St. Petersburg’s Hermitage Museum, the Corcoran Gallery of Art and dozens of other prestigious venues around the world. He collected honorary degrees. But none of that endeared him to art critics. Even as the marketplace spoke — originals often fetched hundreds of thousands of dollars — critics didn’t relent. Edina studio, Erin Taylor Editions, along with his wife, who runs an adjoining gallery, the Griffin Gallery of Fine Art. “I’ve seen him draw at fights. I’ve seen videos of him drawing. When he paints, it’s spontaneous. To capture a moment in a public place — just think of the pressure.” “In my opinion, LeRoy is underrated,” he adds. “It’s like Picasso. They said his work will never be worth anything because there’s so much of it. You could buy a Picasso in the ’70s for a few thousand dollars. I have a LeRoy Neiman piece that was worth several thousand dollars in the ’80s and is worth half a million now. It’s a big oil painting done in the ’60s of a jazz player with a saxophone. It’s hanging in my house, and I’ll never sell it.”

W PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY LEROY NEIMAN FOUNDATION

hen Neiman married Byrne in 1957, they returned to visit his mother in St. Paul. Then the newlyweds drove north to Duluth to find his father; they found

him in a ramshackle Two Harbors boarding house living with a mangy dog. It was the last time the two would meet. Neiman’s relations with his titular hometown weren’t much warmer, though he sometimes returned to visit. In 1985, for example, he did a painting of St. Paul’s Winter Carnival. Twelve years later, as Neiman was negotiating with St. Paul to contribute $4.5 million to fund a downtown museum that would display much of his artwork, Pioneer Press columnist Katherine Lanpher decreed that his art “stinks” and compared it to “Precious Moments figurines and ceramic villages of Little Dickensian houses.” Neiman said he felt as if he’d been “mugged” by a cabal of “uptight citizens who couldn’t justify matching me up with their Saintly City. It was the Playboy artist stigma again, but I was over it. That was the last time I let St. Paul put me on a roasting spit.” A peacemaking expedition to Manhattan by

Minnesota Gov. Arne Carlson and St. Paul Mayor Norm Coleman couldn’t convince the artist to change his mind. Neiman’s extravagant mustache was suggested by Salvador Dalí’s wife, Gala, whose advice could have applied to his art and marketing genius as well as his facial hair. “LeRoy,” she said, “never do anything in half measures. Either grow your mustache wider like Salvador and make it a character or cut it to mouth width like Omar Sharif.” He went long; he wasn’t a half-measure artist. Whether it was his mustache, his portraits of baseball players on Wheaties boxes, sketches of delicate Kirov dancers or an oversize painting on the fuselage of a Manhattan radio station’s traffic helicopter, Neiman splashed it out. “I’m a painter of imaginary people and places,” he wrote in his autobiography. “Don’t mean they weren’t there, it’s just they weren’t there quite the way I painted them. ... Painting is making invisible things visible.” For Neiman, painting was also his passport out of the tough streets and bars of St. Paul and into the pantheon of modern American painters alongside the likes of Andrew Wyeth and Peter Max. For him, revenge was a dish best served in bright colors.

Oh, Jesse, Where Art Thou? In 1999, former Washington correspondent for the St. Paul Dispatch/Pioneer Press Albert Eisele invited his friend LeRoy Neiman to attend a speech by then-governor Jesse Venture at DC’s National Press Club. While there, Neiman drew sketches of the wrestlerturned-politician that he turned into a 4-foot-by-5-foot impressionistic portrait. Neiman offered the painting to Ventura to use as his official portrait at the state capitol. Ventura declined, and to this day, Eisele wonders what became of the artwork. Reproductions of the painting of Ventura giving Winston Churchill’s classic “V for Victory” sign aren’t hard to find. As recently as late October, a “framed bookplate image” of the piece was offered for sale on eBay for $40, and the painting is searchable online. The final say? According to Tara Zabor, director of operations with the LeRoy Neiman Foundation in New York City, the painting is owned by the artist’s foundation.

Done Deal The Twin Cities’ top five residential transactions of 2013. | BY MAXWELL SHAPIRO

F

rom its scenic lakeshores to its secluded urban hideaways, the Land of 10,000 Lakes offers a variety of beautiful estates to call home. Although many associate the beauty of our great state with North Shore destinations and other northerly cabin retreats, Minnesota’s magnificence lies closer to home. 2013 gave buyers a chance at some of the most revered residential properties in the Twin Cities. And for a handful of those buyers, their investments in these luxurious homes landed them on our list of top residential transactions of the year.

Located in the heart of Kenwood, this property overlooks Lake of the Isles and offers a front-row seat to the sun’s morning rise. Built in 1930, the romantic European Tudor sits atop half an acre and charms with its luxurious Gatsby-esque feel inside and enchanting views of the scenery outdoors. The front door is just steps away from the 2.86-mile path that circles the water. Complete renovations have made the 8,460-square-foot interior sparkle, giving this old soul new life. 2424 W. Tucked away along the eastern shores of Lake Minnetonka, this estate exudes a royal spirit. Billowing trees shade the nearly four acres near the center of the main lake. This English-style home includes a two-bedroom guesthouse and a one-bedroom lakeside boathouse. An astonishing 350 feet of lakefront feature a boat-docking inlet and unobstructed views of open water.

Hidden near Wayzata’s scenic Ferndale Road drive, this reclusive property sits atop 2.87 acres on Lake Minnetonka’s prestigious Harrington Point. The French-country abode features five bedrooms with waterfront views and 371 feet of lakeshore. The seemingly never-ending backyard extends to the base of the lake, where it is met by a private dock and guesthouse. 549 Harrington Rd., Wayzata Original List Price: $5,200,000 Sale Price: $4,700,000

Very few things in life rival the gorgeous sunset experienced from the front lawn of this home. Built in 1988, it was designed by Harrison Fraker, the founding dean of the University of Minnesota’s College of Architecture. His style possesses an identity of its own, as the house radiates new-age energy from its modern design. Floor-to-ceiling windows throughout give this contemporary palace an open, spatial feel. The biggest gift is the estate’s unmatched views overlooking Brown’s Bay in the heart of Wayzata’s lakefront properties. 559 Harrington Rd., Wayzata Original List Price: $4,750,000 Sale Price: $4,400,000

Facing the shoreline of Lake Minnetonka, this manse boasts 8,124 square feet of elegant, resort-like living. The home was built in 2006 with some of the most luxurious amenities in mind — a heated stone entry, patio with a built-in grilling column, fire pit and the most astounding feature: a rare underground tunnel connecting the home to a two-story, 1,200-square-foot boathouse located just steps from the water. 6356 Smithtown Rd., Victoria Original List Price: $3,950,000 Sale Price: $3,600,000 Northstar MLS closed transactions as of November 1, 2013.

Another factor is that we’ve been in business for 35 years under the same license, always standing behind our projects, paying our crews and operating on an open-book policy. That type of longevity and stability is important.” Says one voting BATC member: “I have worked with this builder on a multitude of projects, from smaller renovations to magnificent large-scale homes. Their attention to detail, communication and respect for our company as a partner has always been superb. We are proud to be associated with such a wonderful builder and hope to be working with them for many years to come.”
“We couldn’t have been more pleased with the building of our home,” adds a client. “Literally, I can’t imagine how I could be happier. The way they worked with us to get everything the way we wanted, the management of time and budget, the finished product. I still wake up in the morning amazed at my luck to be living in the house I have.”

ig news in the builder community: John Kraemer & Sons, custom builder and remodeler of luxury residences, has become the only firm ever to win the prestigious Builder of the Year award three times. Bestowed by the Builders Association of the Twin Cities and voted on by subcontractors, clients and other BATC members, the accolade recognizes customer satisfaction, trust, communication, loyalty and ethics in business dealings. John Kraemer & Sons earned the award in 2013, 2009 and 1999, and was runner-up in 2008 and 1997. John Kraemer chalks up the head-turning triple win in part to the firm’s unique way of doing business: employing all its own job superintendents, project managers and finish carpenters, for example. “What that means is that clients get the A-team every time,” he explains. “And superintendents typically handle one job at

are works of art. They’re handmade. They’re artisan. An average 8-foot-by-10-foot rug takes four to six months to make, and each one is incredible. The weave, the colors, the textures and designs in these hand-knotted rugs — you just cannot achieve that with cheaper, imitation, machine-made rugs. The high-end client appreciates that. They can see it.” So what’s the best way to choose the perfect rug? According to Farahan, it’s a matter of knowing your budget, color palette and style, and the size of rug you’ll need. Then it’s all about having a good selection to choose from. Cyrus’s selection comes from Nepal, Pakistan, India and Morocco, and boasts some of the most highly regarded lines available. “Brands like Tamarian and Tissage are the most innovative rugs on the market,” Farahan asserts. “And they’re exclusive with us. We can provide rugs that nobody else can.” And even though finding the right pattern or palette can seem daunting, Farahan offers some reassurance: “You can mix it up. You can be eclectic,” he says. “There really are no rules.” Cyrus Artisan Rugs, 5115 American Blvd. W., Bloomginton, 952-922-6000, cyrusrugs.com

here’s nothing as versatile as an area rug. It can be the focal point of a room, it can add color or texture, and it can link together an array of decorating styles. No matter its function, an area rug is a principal player in a room’s style statement. “Rugs are the foundation of the room,” declares Alex Farahan, founder and president of Cyrus Artisan Rugs in Bloomington. “They’re perfect to bring in color, warmth and dimension.” And Farahan knows what he’s talking about. He’s been around the rug business his whole life. His father owned a rug company in Iran; eventually he brought it to New York. And almost 26 years ago, Farahan and his brother followed in their father’s footsteps, opening Cyrus Artisan Rugs in its first location in Edina’s Galleria. “We opened there in 1988,” Farahan recalls. “We were there for almost 19 years, but eventually we needed more space.” So in 2007, the business moved into its current 13,5000-square-foot stand-alone facility. There, Cyrus offers a staggering selection of high-end handmade rugs. “No one in the surrounding five states or Chicago has a selection like Cyrus,” Farahan declares. “Our rugs

Design From a Distance Using in-town talent for an out-of-town project perfects the process. | BY IVY GRACIE

To ensure the project went smoothly, Skogmo took her own advice and chose a Naples-based builder she had worked with in the past. Then she tapped into the builder’s local expertise. “Once you have your contractor on board, you ask them, ‘Who do you want me to work with?’ It’s really important to say, ‘I’m on your team, and I want to work with the people you want to work with.’” After the team was established, they used online conferences to keep the project on track and on time. “The Internet has opened up the opportunity to work from afar with ease,” Skogmo says. “So we would be talking, and the builder would say, ‘OK, Talla, you have the mouse now.’ And I could sit at my computer and discuss the project as if we were all in my conference room looking at the blueprints.” But it wasn’t all done from a distance. Skogmo traveled frequently to Florida to oversee the project: “We went there quite a bit because we were our client’s eyes.” Early in the project, she concentrated on understanding the parameters of the job. “There were certain things we were used to doing that you couldn’t do in Florida. We had to learn about

o your vacation home needs some updating. Or a complete face-lift. Maybe it needs to be torn down so you can start from scratch. How do you make that happen from a distance? Starting close to home could be the answer. Talla Skogmo, principal of Talla Skogmo Interior Design in Edina, says that a long-distance project isn’t much different from one right at home. It can be relatively stress-free when you work with someone you’ve worked with before — even if they’re not on-site. “The comfort of working with someone you trust far outweighs the distance,” she says. Skogmo, a veteran of out-of-town projects, spearheaded a vacation home teardown for a long-time client who relocated from Minneapolis to Manhattan. Even though the project was in Port Royal, Florida, a luxury community at the southern end of Naples, the distance didn’t hinder the process. “We worked with the client’s existing furniture, we sent her packages with furniture selections and swatches — it was very easy,” she says. “We took what we do for a project in Minneapolis and gave it legs.”

different materials — and hurricane codes. That’s why it’s good to work with someone who knows the city and its conditions and building codes.” Skogmo also worked with local vendors to select and secure bigger-ticket items, like the home’s marble, stone and tile. “We were ahead of the game before they started building,” she recalls. “Every stone, every tile, every slab was already selected, priced and purchased. It was a done deal.” “We always work hard to solidify the plan before we begin,” she continues. “So by the time the client walks in the door, they’re saying, ‘Yes, this is exactly what I thought it would be.’” Skogmo says working with someone you trust is the first key to ensuring a successful project. Then it’s just a matter of proactive planning, constant communication and regular trips to the job. “It’s really not that hard to do this from a distance,” she notes. “People shouldn’t be afraid of it.”

The Skyline’s the Limit The Skyline Renovations team specializes in high-quality downtown living. | BY MARGUERITE HAPPE

F

rom tiny retail stores to luxury home contractors to quarterly lifestyle magazines, every industry knows the strain of competition and the goal to be unique in a world with a constant push for innovation and creativity. For Darren Spencer and Matt Carlson of Minneapolis condominium-renovation company Skyline Renovations, their challenge lies in a different area. “There isn’t anyone else focused on what we do,” Spencer explains. “Contractors are afraid to tread in this environment. Some have, but no one else specializes in it.”

Skyline Renovations began in 2004, inspired by a lack of affordably priced and tastefully updated condominiums in the downtown Minneapolis area. As with many entrepreneurs, Carlson and Spencer noticed a gap in the market during their own personal searches for a home with an excellent location and updated, high-quality design. With Carlson’s condo-remodeling hobby and Spencer’s 16 years of commercial-development experience, the team was perfectly positioned for a waiting market. “We couldn’t find what we wanted downtown, so we started building it,” Carlson says. A multitude of organic word-of-mouth referrals and an expanded team of contractors

later, Skyline Renovations became a full-fledged contracting company and a standout in the residential remodeling market. “Matt and Darren are innovative and current, with a discriminating eye for detail. They will work for you to squeeze the most out of your investment,” says client Ben Murray. “We did a complete renovation, including a custom redesign to allow for more fluidity and movement — as well as a panoramic view of sunsets over the Basilica.” Murray is one of many satisfied clients who chose Skyline Renovations based on its reputation for working luxury details into spaces with a smaller square footage and occasionally a tighter budget. Spencer and Carlson’s cohesive relationship allows them to build on one another’s strengths and makes them a team that’s easy to work with — and frankly, one that is enjoyable to be around. The duo’s energy is contagious, and the company’s dedication to its work is evident in every project it undertakes. Though Spencer focuses more on the creative design management and Carlson on real estate and day-to-day operations, they agree on their passion for downtown living and uncompromising attention to detail. As Murray notes, “It’s their personal touch that makes all the difference.”

Design Gone Digital Muse Studio makes great design easy and accessible. | BY IVY GRACIE

S

o you’re considering a home-improvement project or a new home build. Where do you begin? How do you pull together your thoughts and ideas? Where do you find the right person for the job? And how do you make sure your project is on track, on time and on budget? A trip to Muse Studio (musestudio.com) is just the answer. One part Pinterest, one part Match.com and one part Office Suite, the site is a one-stop shop for inspiration, ideas and information. Users can find, organize and store images of products or designs they like, check out carefully vetted trade professionals to helm the work, and monitor and manage their project’s progress once they’ve gotten started. Muse Studio is the brainchild of Denver-based Roth Distributing. With showrooms in the Twin Cities, Kansas City, Salt Lake City and St. Louis, and a history that spans more than 50 years, Roth is a seasoned player in the home-improvement arena. But the company noticed a

trend in the market: Many consumers were stumped about how to get started with their projects, and professionals needed a way to connect and collaborate with potential and existing clients. The Roth team interviewed architects, designers and consumers who were in the throes of a remodel or had just completed one. The company then used those findings to create a platform where homeowners and professionals could find each other, work together and stay in touch throughout the process. Musestudio.com has been implemented in 14 markets, including Minnesota. Using the site couldn’t be simpler, says Strategic Marketing Manager Alysha Archer: “You set up an account, then you can create projects and start saving images. Everything you’re dreaming about — you can store it all in one place. From there, you can browse and contact trade professionals in your area and start sharing your collections with them. So rather than bringing a stack of dog-eared magazine pages to

a meeting, you have one central place to say, ‘This is the floor I love, this is my dream kitchen.’” All the trade professionals available at musestudio.com have earned the Roth stamp of approval. “There are bios that you can peruse so you can get a feel for the kind of work they do,” says Emily Kaiser, creative communication director. “Not any remodeler can get onto our network; we don’t promote people who we wouldn’t work with ourselves.” Once a homeowner starts a project with a trade pro, both parties have access to a set of tools that includes a budget tracker, to-do list, document storage and file sharing. “That helps the homeowner and the professional have a real-time look at everything that’s going on in their project,” says Kaiser. But not everything can — or should — be done online. “There are many times when you need to be face to face,” Kaiser notes. “This is not meant to replace those meetings.” But for those times when it would be nice to handle things with the touch of a button, Muse Studio fits the bill. “Rather than scheduling a meeting to go over a bid, you can log on and sign off on it right away,” she adds. “Muse Studio is just streamlining the process.”

Good Neighbors A four-unit development on Mount Curve gives teardown a good name.

152 Artful Living

| Winter 2014

T

he word “teardown” can cause fear and apprehension in any neighborhood where there is concern for maintaining a clear and treasured aesthetic. Sadly, these fears are often founded. Once in a while, however, someone has the know-how to get it exactly right — like David Erotas, principal of Excelsior-based Trias Development and owner of Erotas Building Corporation. When he and his partner got the rare chance to develop two adjacent teardowns on Mount Curve Avenue, they were sensitive to the emotion the rumor of a teardown could instill, particularly in an area where the homes date back as far as the 1800s. He and his team, which included architectural designer Peter MacDonald of Peter Stafford MacDonald and Company, set out to create a development that would complement — not compete with — one of the Twin Cities’ most prestigious and historically significant neighborhoods.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY SUSAN GILMORE

“Getting to know the people in the neighborhood was one of the most important aspects of the project’s planning stage,” says Erotas. “We talked with them and went to neighborhood meetings to convey our intent to fit into the area and enhance it, not disrupt it. We wanted to make sure we were giving the neighborhood what they wanted to see.” Having built homes in other time-honored neighborhoods like St. Paul’s Summit Avenue and the Edina Country Club District, Erotas understood that the neighbors would appreciate the chance to offer input on the development’s design. This sensitivity to those who already called Mount Curve Avenue home, along with the authenticity of design, resulted in four premium homes that blend seamlessly into their established environs. Consisting of two duplex homes, the development showcases a variety of styles, just as in the surrounding neighborhood. The Palladian gives a nod to the Italian Renaissance Revival and shares a short wall with the Tudor, a spacious, updated version of a favored classic. The other two homes, called The Villas, are distinctly neoclassical. Inside, the homes offer all the comforts, energy efficiency and technology of modernity. Ten-foot ceilings, gas fireplaces with natural-stone surrounds and wood mantles, and hardwood floors are standard. The large kitchens feature natural-stone countertops, Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances, and walk-in pantries. Each home is wired for sound and features a security system, along with an elevator that services all three floors. A professionally managed concierge association handles maintenance and upkeep, and offers personalized services for each owner. “All you have to take care of is what’s inside — everything outside is the responsibility of the association,” Erotas explains. “If you are traveling, there is also someone there checking to make sure things are working. And if you call ahead and say, ‘I’m coming home on this date,’ the association will have your home ready for your arrival.” While both the Villas have been sold, the Palladian and Tudor are available for purchase. At an average of more than 4,000 square feet with three-car garages, both homes provide ample footprints for gracious living. The Palladian is being finished out as the developer’s model home; the interior of the Tudor is preliminarily framed, but some room-size adjustments still can be made, along with customized detailing and finish selections. Honoring the architectural character of the neighborhood is what made this project so special. “You have the quality, technology and conveniences of a new home, yet they fit in like they are 80- or 100-year-old buildings,” Erotas says. “The beauty of Mount Curve is the vintage homes. That’s why we did what we did.”

Reverse Snowbirds Two Oklahomans fly home to Minnesota. | BY ALYSSA FORD

T

here’s something about snow and turning 65. When Minnesotans get their first long-awaited Social Security checks, they tend to spend them in Tucson, Tampa, Texarkana: somewhere far away from icy windshields and subzero temperatures. But not everyone. When Rob Chopp earned his 65 candles in 2011, he had one birthday wish: to go home. A native of Grand Rapids, Chopp had lived all over the United States for his job as a John Deere executive. Except for a brief stint in the 1990s, he hadn’t lived in Minnesota since the 1970s. Most recently, he and his wife, Donna, lived in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, where the average February high is a relatively balmy 51 degrees. “Rob needed to come home,” says Donna, a native New Yorker who spent the better part of her childhood in Minneapolis. “Minnesota is a beautiful state, and we feel we get the best of everything, with art and theater in the city and the nature views at our cabin up north.” In late 2011, the pair purchased a two-level condominium in the Mill City district of downtown Minneapolis and brought in Pat Manning-Hanson, a senior designer at Gabberts Design Studio in Edina, to make the place feel like home. Right away, Manning-Hanson

knew it was a challenging project. For one, the living/dining space maxed out at 465 square feet, and the Chopps hoped to entertain up to eight guests. For another, the couple had purchased the model unit, which meant that the Brazilian cherry floors were there to stay, as was the khaki textured wall finish around the fireplace. “I needed a color palette that would play with the cherry floors and khaki wall, and still give the space some visual ‘pop’,” says the designer. Right away, Manning-Hanson pulled one impressive rabbit out of her hat: a generous moon-shaped Thayer Coggin sectional, upholstered in a neutral khaki texture. Then she custom designed a Fabrica wool rug to fit the sectional and give the room some space-age verve. “The rug pattern is inspired by starburst shapes repeated in the pillow fabric on the sectional,” she says. The sectional and rug anchor the Chopps’ living area and set off an aesthetic motif of circles, ovals and all manner of curvy-shaped things. “The condo itself has many linear, rectangular and squared shapes, so all the curves soften the space and make it feel more restful and residential,” says Manning-Hanson. You’ll find her circular thinking at work in the Kelly Hoppen–designed room screen, made of wooden rings that can be turned in different directions, as well as the plump,

silver-finished table lamp. The curvesome tableau also includes a cabochon-shaped coffee table by Barbara Barry. The foyer is another study in geometry, but from an entirely different angle. Rather than break up the lines, Manning-Hanson plays with them, allowing the space to be emphatically art deco. The aesthetic heart of the foyer is a custom-sized Swaim console with pin-straight silver-finished legs and a Nero Marquina marble top. To match such a distinctive piece, Manning-Hanson custom designed a Fabrica wool rug that dances with the deco styling of the console and weaves in the dark espresso hue of the kitchen cabinetry, the various khaki neutrals and the Brazilian cherry floor color. The deco tradition continues in the dining area, just off the foyer, with a ziggurat-patterned Swaim dining bench that coordinates with the dark khaki tufted banquette, made by hand in the Gabberts workroom. The 60-inch walnut Bolier table can be extended to comfortably seat 10, come spring, summer or Minnesota winter. The Chopps specifically looked for a condo unit with a street entrance, the better for their Jack Russell terriers, Baxter and Sasha. “It’s been awhile since we lived through a real winter, so we’re already prepared with the little boots and coats for the dogs,” says Donna.

t 50, I have my dream job: floor staging and sales for Zachary Ltd. at International Market Square in Minneapolis. Our team — owner Jane Ingenhutt, Trina Eibon, Phyl Weber, Rick Ingenthron and myself — works as one to create an experience for all who enter the show room. Since Zachary Ltd.’s inception 17 years ago, Jane has offered unique and hard-to-find items. Her impeccable taste can be seen in everything we sell. Our floor stock is determined by what Jane finds appealing rather than by profit margins or fads. It has been a formula for success. I once overheard a designer tell her client that the show room was “magical.” We agree. Zachary Ltd. has a unique, signature look and feeling that are constantly changing. We offer a fusion of styles, provenance and period pieces. The trick is editing. Zachary Ltd. is the result of many

years of evolution and editing. Interior designers and residential architects rely on Jane’s sense of casual style and simple elegance. The show room is in a constant state of reinvention. We always have had a well-deserved reputation for unusual accessories. Zachary Ltd. recently acquired some new furniture lines, including Old Biscayne Designs, Curate, Anthology and Comfort Design. More and more, designers are relying on us for our custom capabilities in upholstered pieces and case goods. Good design is timeless. We offer good design, push it over the top for fun, and create the kind of excitement and inspiration that feel “magical.” Zachary Ltd., International Market Square, 275 Market St., Suite 461, Minneapolis, 612-305-1201, zacharyltd.com

Daring Spaces Architect Peter Eskuche turns dreams into dream homes. | BY MARGUERITE HAPPE

A

s architect Peter Eskuche sorts through boxes of faded childhood drawings, a smile slowly stretches across his face. “I’ve always loved dreaming up daring spaces,” he says as he flips through the colorful tree-house designs of his youth. “I was the kid in school who spent the whole class period drawing instead of listening.” This may come as a surprise to those who know him, as one of the distinct aspects of working with Eskuche is his genuine ability to listen to the dreams of his clients. His creativity and design chops are acute, but Eskuche’s truly remarkable characteristic is his empathetic, ego-free sensibility. This combination has resulted in designs featured in more than 27 publications and the title of 2013 Best Architect from Lake

Minnetonka Magazine, among national and international accolades. Seventeen years, twin daughters, three television features and a move to Minnesota later, Eskuche is still drawing exceptional homes. Though they’re no longer situated in trees, each one is a fearless testament to the power of good architecture. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Stout with a degree in interior design, he completed his licensure in architecture and moved to Minneapolis to work with a local design/build firm. These nuances are reflected in every aspect of the project.

of dreams and doodles From a young age, Peter Eskuche envisioned

a life of putting pen to paper to create beautiful things.

“His talent is unquestionable, but what impresses us more than anything else is how easily he develops relationships with his clients,” says Martha O’Hara, principal designer of Martha O’Hara Interiors. “Whether he is working with a homeowner or a colleague, Peter makes every project as fun as it is beautiful.” Notable work includes media favorite and Taunton’s home, the Mountain Modern. The Aspen-meets-Manhattan abode features sharp overhangs, massive stone walls and clever design elements drummed up to accommodate the restraints of a compact lot. From a Bahamas getaway accessible only by golf cart to equestrian estates and homes in the style of French Provence, the Eskuche portfolio is diverse in all ways but one: Each home is the owner’s dream turned reality.

Travel Companion The Minneapolis Club is there for you around the globe. | BY PAUL GREGERSEN

ravel companies and agents constantly market exclusive travel opportunities, but how can you know for certain these trips are truly being offered to just a small group of people? The truth is, you can’t. Unless you are a member of the Minneapolis Club. During their business or personal travels, club members have the opportunity to experience the same exceptional accommodations and services they have grown to expect at the Minneapolis Club at more than 70 private clubs in more than 20 states and 10 countries. “The reciprocal clubs are a very popular option with our members,” says Minneapolis Club Concierge Manager Pat Brengman. “The relationships we have established with these clubs give members an exclusive opportunity to visit other well-respected clubs all over the world.” Brengman is an expert when it comes to reciprocal clubs and the variety of exclusive opportunities available worldwide. Not only is she the lead of the concierge team at the Minneapolis Club, she is also

president of the National Concierge Association. “Due to the Scandinavian background of many of our members, Norske Selskab, or the Norway Club, is a popular destination,” she says. Founded in 1772, the Norway Club is one of the world’s oldest private clubs. It is centrally located in Oslo with beautiful facilities characterized by culture and tradition. The clubhouse contains a grand dining room, five sitting rooms, a library, a billiard room and various lounges. The club also has a gourmet kitchen and a well-stocked wine cellar. Like the Minneapolis Club, emphasis is put on discreet, attentive service. Other popular worldwide reciprocal destinations include Hong Kong, France, Ireland, Japan and New Zealand. Domestic destinations include the prestigious Yale and Union Clubs in New York City, the University Club of Chicago, and the Harvard Club of Boston. “While traveling, our members love the idea of going to a club where they are treated as specially as they are at their own Minneapolis Club,” Brengman notes with a satisfied smile.

Having a Ball Arthur Murray Dance Studio gets Twin Cities toes tapping. | BY HAYLEY DULIN

any of us can remember the joy our parents had dancing. We watched with awe at their grace and dexterity as they glided across the dance floor at weddings and other events. And we secretly wished we could dance as well and enjoy the elegant intimacy they were experiencing. For Lynda Smith, professional ballroom dancer and owner of Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Edina, ballroom dancing offers the perfect combination of fitness and developing a deeper relationship with a dance partner. “We’re here to help people enjoy life at a deeper level,” says Smith. “Ballroom dancing offers so many benefits: It helps you feel more confident, especially in social situations. It’s an incredible, low-impact way to stay fit and build muscle strength and balance. And it allows you to share an intimate experience with your partner.” The Arthur Murray Dance Studio, which has a second location in St. Paul, offers private dance lessons, group classes and fun practice parties for singles or couples in waltz, foxtrot, swing, rumba, cha cha, hustle, Argentine tango, country Western, Latin and more. All of Arthur Murray’s professionals are certified instructors who stay up-to-date on the latest trends as well as the classics.

“Anyone of any age can learn how to dance elegantly,” notes Smith. “We work with our students to help them build their technique, styling and fitness. When you feel confident about your dancing, it lifts up your entire being — you feel sexy, fit and graceful. And it takes away the fear of having others watching you, which translates into many other parts of our day-to-day lives.” As a testament to her desire to make the metro a ballroom-dancing mecca, Smith has married her passion for dancing with her love for the Twin Cities. For the past four years, she has staged Dancing With the Twin Cities Celebrities, a charity ballroom-dancing competition based on the popular TV show. Typically held each February, the event attracts some 300 people and raises money to support the work of eight charitable organizations, including the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in memory of Smith’s late husband, Jesse, who died of Hodgkin’s disease in 2006. Also benefitting from last year’s event were Upstream Arts, Avenues for Homeless Youth, Tee It Up for the Troops, Smile Network International, Hammer and eQuality - Pathways to Potential. “Our annual event allows us to do great things for some very worthwhile nonprofits while sharing our passion for ballroom dancing with the community,” Lynda says. “To me, that’s living artfully.”

The Standalone Class The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a pioneering blend of utility, comfort and function. | BY MARGUERITE HAPPE

If driving an S-Class makes it hard to drive anything else, driving the 2014 S-Class will make it next to impossible,” claims Mercedes-Benz of its new premier luxury sedan. Have you ever ridden in a spa on wheels? Short of cucumber water and warm towels, the 2014 S-Class exemplifies the mission of Mercedes-Benz to relieve the stress of driving. Seating engineers consulted medical professionals and physiotherapists to ensure that the contours of each seat are optimally supportive and that all surfaces in the vehicle are soothing to the touch. The Warmth and Comfort Package is seemingly designed with Minnesota winters in mind: This technological advancement heats every single surface you might touch on a freezing winter morning, including the steering wheel, door panels, armrests and more. And when temperatures skyrocket, all seats are ventilated for the humid days of summer. Sit back, relax and let up to six massage options

(and a hot-stone massage feature) knead out your tensions. The olfactory department is satisfied with the Air-Balance Package: A sophisticated air-ionization system filters and purifies air while signature MercedesBenz-scented aromatherapy soothes. Technologically, the sedan is the most efficient and safest vehicle Mercedes-Benz has ever created. The 2014 S-Class is the world’s first car to feature only LED lights, and the Magic Body Control feature is the future of all automobile suspensions. A camera in the car monitors all 360 degrees around you, spots oncoming bumps and hills, and automatically reacts in real time to minimize impact. The internal camera can read a half-inch variation in the road from 45 feet away. Fewer emissions, vivid controls, and increased power and torque create a machine that is waiting and listening to your every move, ready to react. Describing the Mercedes-Benz 2014 S-Class as a “nice ride” is an understatement.

A Genuine Daymaker Martha Stewart’s exclusive hairstylist joins the team at Juut Salonspa in Edina. | BY MARGUERITE HAPPE

PHOTOGRAPHY BY ASHLEY BORNTRAGER

argherita Missoni needed a $500,000 crown worked into an intricate hairstyle for the Met Ball. Michael Kors, Victoria Beckham and Rachel Zoe needed their visions to appear on the runway at Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week. And Hillary Clinton just needed a blowout. Most notably, Martha Stewart needed her hair cut and styled for Martha Stewart Live segments and the covers of Martha Stewart Living. Enter stylist Anthony Sorensen, armed with scissors and the sharp, witty personality of a born-and-bred New Yorker. Technically trained at Frédéric Fekkai Salon in New York and a senior stylist at Frédéric Fekkai and Warren Tricomi, he not only met the needs of each of these powerful brands but exceeded them exponentially. As Stewart’s exclusive hairstylist from 2008 to 2013, Sorensen styled some of the most memorable Martha Stewart Living covers and appeared on her show a handful of times. “The first time I styled her hair, I was so nervous that I was shaking,” he remembers. “As soon as I finished her cut, I asked her if she liked it. She looked up at me and said, ‘Oh, you know you’re good!’” That was the beginning of a partnership and a friendship, resulting in Sorensen spending holidays at Stewart’s home and dispensing some life-changing advice: “I was the one who advised her to grow her hair out! She’s tall, so she can hold it.” A lifestyle change led Sorensen to his current position as daymaker and master stylist at Juut Salonspa in Edina. His move to Minnesota means Midwest women can enjoy the same treatment as the likes of Stewart and Clinton. “It’s incredible. I have never worked at a company so genuinely friendly and welcoming,” he says. “It really is something special over here.” To book an appointment with Anthony Sorensen at Juut Salonspa in Edina, call 952-925-4343 or visit juut.com.

Skin Deep Turning off the alarm clock is the best excuse to turn back the biological clock with today’s most extravagant skincare concoctions. | BY KAREN S. SCHNEIDER

T

he chandeliers scatter light through their crystal. The travertine floors are buffed to a muted perfection. The scent of sandalwood and myrrh fills the air. Where is this den of exquisite excess? Maybe you are at Barneys in New York. Or Fred Segal in Los Angeles. This much is sure: You are as far away from picking up toilet paper at Target while wondering if you can fit in a car wash before zipping to Whole Foods to get that organic pasta the kids love as you can possibly be when the beautiful woman with the dark-rimmed eyes holds out a tiny bottle in her artfully manicured hand and asks, “Would you like to try?” It doesn’t matter what she says next: The answer is yes. Twenty-four-karat-gold-infused neck cream? Yes. Youth messenger molecule with microalgae extract? Yes. Nightingale poop facial? Yes, yes, yes — wait. Nightingale what? The pursuit of beauty can make us a little nutty — especially once we step outside our zip code. That youth messenger molecule in Dr. Sebagh’s Signature Serum at Barneys? Yours for a mere $830 an ounce. A few feet away, RéVive’s Peau Magnifique Duo Youth Recruit potions promise to “mimic the performance of youthful skin” for $1,995. Can you? Should you? You bet. And here’s why. You work hard; you deserve it. You’re on vacation; you deserve it. At least that’s what your brain is telling you. At

Berlin’s European School of Management and Technology, Associate Professor of Marketing Francine Espinoza Petersen has done research that corroborates what we all know in our gut: A good, solid justification makes us quicker to go crazy with the credit card. Says Petersen: “Being able to justify an indulgence can make us feel not only less guilty, but in fact prouder for splurging on ‘superfluous’ things.” Not that the geranyl propanol that delays cell senescence by reducing peroxidation and maintaining telomere length in Dr. Sebagh’s Signature Serum is superfluous. The point is this: Shifting from ho-hum to holy-moly is part of the thrill of getting away, whether you take an afternoon off to sample the high-end exclusives at Cos Bar in Edina, descend into the sublime decadence that is the subterranean beauty department of the Madison Avenue Barneys or sneak in a visit to celeb favorite Bella Skin Institute in Calabasas, California, where many of the resident stars (the city northwest of Los Angeles is home to Britney Spears, Kim Kardashian, Jessica Simpson and others) pop in for favorites, including, yes, a nightingale poop facial. “It’s an ancient geisha secret,” says the institute’s founder, dermatologist Anna Guanche, MD. “The enzyme guanine micro-exfoliates and brightens the skin. The monks used it, too, to polish their scalps!” Many of the ingredients in today’s most potent products have been around for millennia, but it has taken modern science to coax nature into giving up her ancient secrets. Consider: Orlane uses 21 amino acids from the

stem cell of the pale iris flower in its new anti-aging B21 Extraordinaire booster to help “reset your cells,” says rep Brigitte Nieloud. La Prairie, meanwhile, lures the anti-aging properties in its just-launched Skin Caviar Luxe Sleep Mask out of a Harry Potter–worthy blend of caviar and golden samphire extracts, an advanced lipopeptide and an herbal complex to deliver what spokesperson Megan Marsanico-Byrne calls “overnight magic.” But will the light of day — or the common sense that re-enters the body when you re-enter your own zip code — break the spell? Not likely. Each company backs up claims of magic with research, stats and graphs. What they cannot document is the shift in spirit that happens when the wand is waved — a long, expensive process that moves from the initial discovery of potent new ingredients to incorporation of said ingredients into a formulation to clinical testing and finally — abracadabra! — product launch. For Jean-Louis Sebagh, MD, who oversees the team of scientists who work in his lab in France, the last stage is “the most thrilling,” he says. “There is nothing anywhere near as gratifying as when a complete stranger comes up to me in a store and tells me how one of my products has changed her skin.” Magic or not, that change is skin-deep — and then some. “My clients feel a psychological response to a product that has succeeded in bringing a physical improvement,” says Guanche. “The physical improvement brings emotional improvement. It improves confidence. And confidence is the true elixir of beauty.”

It Costs How Much? Cult skincare creator Dr. Jean-Louis Sebagh talks straight about his $830 serum.

When you buy Dr. Sebagh’s new Signature Serum — and you can’t buy it just anywhere; it sells at just one retail outlet per country — you get, along with the potion, an embossed card with a private telephone number and password to arrange a “priority appointment” with the doc and his team at his London clinic. For those who can’t hop the pond, Sebagh explains what makes his new serum so special, so expensive — and so worth it. (Available at Barneys.com.)

What is your Signature Serum’s “Youth Messenger molecule”? I believe you are referring to geranyl

propanol, which delays cell senescence and maintains telomere length. The telomere is the part of your chromosome that controls aging. Every time your cells divide, your telomeres get shorter, and once your telomere runs out, cell division ceases. [The serum uses] technology based on the 2009 Nobel prize–winning discovery of the enzyme telomerase. When you activate telomerase, it helps rebuild the telomere, thus slowing the skin’s aging clock.

What makes Signature Serum so expensive?

Years of research and testing, and the ingredients I use. We often see mass-market

and premium skincare products claiming to carry the same or similar ingredients, but it is the percentage and potency of the ingredient that is key. For example, we know that hyaluronic acid is an excellent skin hydrator and plumper, but a product that contains 20 percent hyaluronic acid is going to have a wholly different impact than one that only has 5 percent or less. To keep it colloquial, you get what you pay for. I am not spending huge amounts of money on advertising and marketing. As an independent doctor skincare brand, I spend my money on research and the use of the best ingredients so any customer buying my Signature Serum or other products knows she is not having to pay for the recuperation of marketing costs but rather the product itself and what went into developing it.

What advice do you have for women who can’t afford your line? Buy the best you can afford

from a reputable brand and begin to follow a serious skincare regime — the sooner you start, the greater cumulative benefits will be for the future. Do not, however, rely only on skincare. Lifestyle is equally important: a well-balanced diet, moderate exercise, effective but not total protection from the sun and finally — be happy.

Planes, Trains — Or a Parking Spot on France Avenue

For a local getaway, escape into Cos Bar in Edina, the exclusive Minnesota home to many top-of-the-line products.

Orlane B21Extraordinaire, $250: Orlane says the 21 amino acids and Youth Reset Complex in this booster, used under serum or cream, reduce cell degradation, thus reducing wrinkles, lines, sagging and spots, and helping “set the cells’ clock back.”

La Prairie Skin Caviar Deluxe Sleep Mask, $300: “At night, skin is at its peak for repair and absorption,” says a rep. The mask’s brush-on, leave-on blend of potent extracts and peptides helps “rebuild skin and smooth wrinkles from the inside out.”

RéVive Peau Magnifique Duo Youth Recruit, $1,995: This limited-edition set targets the face and neck with an exclusive Bio-3 Cell Renewal Complex that mimics skin’s natural repair action for “dramatic results,” says RéVive, including firmer skin, fewer wrinkles and an immediate glow.

Market Street Dermatology, International Market Square marketstreetdermatology.com “When I go to national dermatology conferences, we ask each other, ‘What are you using?’” says Lynda Kauls, MD, who along with Elyse Scheuer, MD, launched Market Street Dermatology this fall in International Market Square. “The two products that are favorites are Neocutis Lumiere Riche and SkinCeuticals Phloretin Gel.” She often relies on anecdotal evidence when evaluating cosmeceuticals since, as she says, “studies conducted by manufacturers are often less than ideal, or there is absolutely no science behind a product line.” Kauls only carries specific products from lines she has personally tested and endorsed, like Lumiere Riche eye cream. She used it on one eye for two weeks and asked for feedback at the office, she says: “10 out of 10 people could tell which side I was using it on. That was good enough for me to keep using it!”

Neocutis Lumiere Riche, $95: “If we wouldn’t use it,” says Kauls of the products she carries (including SkinCeuticals Phloretin Gel, $160) “we don’t sell it.”

Morrie’s displays more than a century of the iconic cars. | BY KEN GROSS

T

his fall, to celebrate the luxury brand’s 110th year, Morrie’s Cadillac in Golden Valley presented historic Cadillacs alongside its newest models to the delight of visitors. The display included a 1904 Cadillac Model A, an elegant 1941 Series 60 Fleetwood Sedan, a pristine, 62,000-originalmile 1949 Model 61 Sedanette Club Coupe, a stunning 1958 Eldorado Biarritz convertible and more. Cadillac history is replete with firsts. After a modest beginning in 1903, the brand captured headlines five years later when it won Britain’s coveted Dewar Trophy. Engineers disassembled three identical new models, scrambled parts and then re-assembled the cars. Automobiles in that era were largely handmade, not precision-built. Cadillac’s feat resulted in the slogan, “The Standard of the World.” In 1912, Cadillac introduced electric starting, eliminating the deadly hand crank. In the classic era, sleek custom-bodied Cadillacs were some of America’s finest cars, as evidenced by the 1929 Sport Phaeton on display. Turret tops, safety glass, a 16-cylinder engine and the early offering of automatic transmissions are among Cadillac’s accomplishments. The 1949 high-compression overhead valve V8 was America’s first modern postwar auto engine. But it was the brand’s advanced styling, highlighted by bold grilles and aircraft-inspired tail fins, that made Cadillac synonymous with success, fame and luxury. The brand was the American standard to which all luxury cars were compared. But by the 1990s, facing intense competition from European and Japanese rivals, General Motors’ premier marque underwent a visual and engineering renaissance. Wayne Cherry, then GM’s design chief, was asked to take Cadillac’s iconic, fin-fantastic ’59 model and “fast-forward” it 40 years. Through sketches and proposals that excited GM’s strategy board, a fresh new design direction evolved. Iconic Cadillac styling elements led the way: vertical headlights and taillights; egg-crate grilles; rakish, angular panels and an attitude that commanded attention. The new vision for Cadillac was expressed as “Art and Science,” and that is evident in today’s razor-edged, boldly sculpted designs that incorporate the latest automotive technology. “We did not create [contemporary Cadillacs] as the result of sifting through reams of market data, nor is their shape trimmed to suit the input collected at a consumer clinic,” says Ed Welburn, GM’s vice president of global design. “It is emotion on four wheels and the very essence of what defines Cadillac today.” With the stunning new 2014 Cadillac CTS and its companions, the ATS, SRX, XTS and the dramatic ELR plug-in hybrid coupe, GM designers have created a range of distinctive, futuristic vehicles that appeal to a wide and appreciative audience. As visitors to Morrie’s witnessed, Cadillac has regained its visual impact and presence.

Winging It Greg Herrick has assembled one of the largest collections of flightworthy golden-age aircraft. | BY DAVID MAHONEY

I

f geography is destiny, then Greg Herrick was born to collect vintage airplanes. He grew up in Ottumwa, Iowa, home to the Antique Airplane Association. “I would see the old airplanes fly overhead when they had their annual event,” he recalls. When he graduated from high school, some of his classmates were given cars. Herrick’s graduation gift was a pilot’s license. Herrick started getting serious about collecting airplanes after he sold Zeos, his Minneapolis-based personal-computer company. While several of his fellow aviation buffs were collecting warbirds, he was intrigued by the planes made during the period between the two world wars — the time he refers to as “the golden age” of aviation. “A lot of advances took place in aviation then, both in the infrastructure to support aviation as well as in the aircraft themselves,” Herrick remarks. “There aren’t a lot of people who focus on that period who have the resources to have multiple airplanes.” What really gets Herrick’s collector juices flowing is finding a “basket case” example of a rare airplane — maybe in a barn, out in the desert or even at the bottom of a lake — and restoring it to its original flying condition. His preservationist zeal led him to pursue a lawsuit to obtain original engineering drawings for a plane all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States and then to have an amendment passed by Congress directing the Federal Aviation Administration to preserve all similar documents

aviation expert Greg Herrick’s best finds are the lost or forgotten airplanes waiting to be discovered.

Flying with the Stars Among the many rare and historic airplanes in Greg Herrick’s collection, one stands out as worthy of special mention. Not only is it the world’s oldest flying all-metal airliner as well as the oldest flying multi-engine airliner, but it has also been flown by some of the most celebrated pilots in the history of aviation. Built in 1927, the Ford Tri-Motor C-1077 had its first brush with fame just three months after it rolled off the assembly line. Charles Lindbergh, having recently completed his legendary solo flight across the Atlantic, was doing a long-distance victory lap around North and Central America in the Spirit of St. Louis before donating it to the Smithsonian. Bill Stout, head of Ford’s aviation division, had the idea of flying Lindbergh’s mother to Mexico City so she could spend Christmas with her illustrious son (and, not incidentally, provide some publicity for Ford planes). After C-1077 arrived in Mexico City — the largest airplane ever seen there — Lindbergh used it to give rides to dignitaries, including the family of the United States ambassador to Mexico. One of the ambassador’s daughters, Anne Morrow, was particularly smitten with the dashing young aviator, whom she described in glowing terms in her diary. She became Mrs. Charles Lindbergh a year and a half later. Just a few months after the Mexico City trip, C-1077 was deployed to rescue the pilots of the first east-to-west trans-Atlantic airplane flight, who had crash-landed the Bremen on a Canadian island. Flown to the island by Admiral Byrd’s polar expedition pilots, Bernt Balchen and Floyd Benett (who, sadly, contracted a fatal case of pneumonia on the trip), the C-1077 successfully returned to New York with the three European pilots, who all took turns at the stick. A year later, C-1077 was piloted by yet another aviation legend when Amelia Earhart flew the plane from Rochester, New York, to an air show in Buffalo. Earhart would appear again in the pilot’s seat of C-1077 80 years later — or, rather, Hilary Swank playing Earhart in Amelia, the biopic in which the historic plane has a star turn.

and make them available to the public. “These drawings are the very DNA of modern aircraft design,” Herrick insists. He now owns dozens of vintage aircraft, most of them fully restored. They’re parked in a hangar roughly the size of a football field at the Anoka County-Blaine Airport. Although he does frequently allow aviation enthusiasts and school groups to tour his collection, these planes aren’t just static museum pieces. For example, his 1927 Avro Avian, which came off the assembly line just three weeks before Amelia Earhart’s plane of the same make and model, was used to recreate Earhart’s record-setting solo flight across America and back. Herrick himself flies most of his planes, including a 1931 Stinson Tri-Motor that is the oldest surviving American Airlines airliner. He has the plane’s original logbooks, which show that it’s flown nearly one and a half million miles and carried more than 100,000 passengers. “People ask me, are you afraid to fly in these old airplanes?” Herrick says. “And I answer, how can you be afraid to fly something that’s flown around the world that many times and carried the population of a medium-sized city?”

Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous Or how to not raise a trustafarian. |

W

BY ALYSSA FORD

hen it comes to rich kids on the loose, there’s really no shortage of can-you-believe-it examples. Last January, the heiress to the Formula 1 fortune made news for racking up a nearly $48,000 tab at a London nightclub. Last summer, the former president of Facebook, Sean Parker, was fined millions by the California Coastal Commission for environmental damage. (He had a team of builders construct fake ruins and dredge a pond in a protected grove of ancient redwoods for his wedding.) Then there’s the original celebutante, Paris Hilton, who, when not serving jail time for drunk driving, is generally filling her role as the unofficial spokeswoman for stiffer estate taxes. It’s tough to raise a genuine, levelheaded kid, full of gratitude and humility and a sense of purpose. It can be even more difficult to raise a kid when there’s a trust fund afoot. “Parents have described it to me like looking up at Mount Everest and having no oxygen and no Sherpa,” says Nathan Dungan, a private wealth consultant in Minneapolis and founder of Share, Save, Spend. It’s not just about the ruination of a person. For many wealthy families, it’s also about the tarnishing of a brand, a family name — or in some cases, such as Hilton Hotels, both. Not to mention that it takes just a single generation to obliterate a family fortune. The Peel family of Britain holds the classic cautionary tale. Their story goes like this: By the turn of the 19th century, the Peels had amassed an incredible real-estate portfolio, some 10,000 acres in total. The family mansion, Drayton Manor, housed a stunning collection of furniture and art, including works by Rubens. Sir Robert Peel (the first) was a large-scale textile manufacturer. His son, Sir Robert (the second), was twice the prime minister of Great Britain and is still regarded as one of nation’s most gifted statesmen. Unfortunately, Sir Robert (the third) had a weakness for gambling and the champagne lifestyle. At one point, Robert, third Baronet, built himself a lavish horse and dog racetrack and made extensive renovations to Drayton Manor, adding, among other things, a massive aviary filled with exotic birds. But the high times didn’t

192 Artful Living

| Winter 2014

last. By 1871, all the paintings were sold off. By 1912, huge parcels of land were sold at bargain-basement prices. By 1926, the mansion was stripped of its marble columns as well as the lead flashing and water pipes. By the middle of the 1930s, the very shell of Drayton Manor was demolished and sold for rubble. Warren Buffett famously has said that the right amount to leave your heirs is “enough so they can do anything, but not enough so they can do nothing.” But that’s very tricky. What amount of money fulfills dreams? What amount curdles a person into a spoiled brat? It’s a quandary affecting hundreds of families in Minnesota, according to the West Central Initiative Foundation in Fergus Falls. A 2011 study from the nonprofit, authored by economist Andrea Lubov, showed that some $48 billion will shift from one generation to another between 2011 and 2030 in this state alone. So how does one raise a humble rich kid? It’s not easy, but it is possible.

Tip No. 1: Be very honest about the pitfalls. When Linda turned 18, she was summoned to the opulent client dining room of her father’s business. There, a small cluster of lawyers and company officials had assembled to explain her inheritance, including various stock options. The lawyers told her she needed to make up a will right away. “It was a quirk in New York law,” she says. “I didn’t technically inherit the money until 21, but if I died between 18 and 21, I needed to have a will. It was a strange feeling, as if the money was more important than my life.” Linda remembered that experience when raising her three sons in Minneapolis and developed a policy of openness, talking freely about the dangers, complexities and unusual responsibilities that come with money. “There weren’t any big formal talks, but I always tried to jump on opportunities as they came up,” she says. “For example, my middle son

always wanted to give money to every homeless person he saw in New York, so we had a long talk about effective giving.” Linda also got her sons heavily involved with Threshold Foundation, a California-based nonprofit that acts as a kind of open forum and support group for moneyed people.

Tip No. 2: Push him out of his comfort zone. Jim Lund spends a lot of time thinking about money as senior vice president at NorthRock, a wealth advisory practice in Minneapolis. He has very strong opinions about not wanting his own kids to grow up with a distorted sense of themselves. For him, the solution lay in church mission trips. With his two sons and daughter, Lund has dug wells in Honduras, built houses in the Dominican Republic and assembled food packets in Racine, Wisconsin. In February, he went with his 15-year-old son, Matt, to build a house for a family in Mexico. “Here we are, sleeping in the hot basement of this building in Mexico in sleeping bags, and Matt turns to me and says, ‘Dad, I think I’d take this trip over going to Hawaii,’” recalls Lund. “I thought it was really something for him to say that.” Robyn Schein, director at the Minneapolis Foundation, says that volunteering is perhaps the strongest antacid to me-me-me-ism. “Volunteering with your kids is the best way to expose them to thinking about the world beyond themselves,” she says. Through her role at the Minneapolis Foundation, she highly recommends that families make a tradition of doing active charity work together. “I recommend that people try to do something as a family unit at least once a year — preferably not at the holidays, because that time of year is already so intense,” she says. “Birthdays and anniversaries are terrific for this because they happen every year at the same time. One family we work with always does volunteer work together every year on the matriarch’s birthday, even though she passed away several years ago. I think it’s a fantastic tribute.”

Tip No. 3: Run money experiments. Dungan is a big proponent of running money experiments with children. “Money experiments send a positive money message, and they also have the net benefit of giving you lots of information about your potential inheritors,” he says. One idea? Offer matching grants to any kid or grandkid who wants to donate part of his or her allowance. Dungan also suggests that birthdays are ripe for money experiments. “Give little Hannah a wrapped birthday gift — don’t forget that — but also give her a check for $25 or $50, with the pay-to-the-order line left blank and ‘Hannah’s Birthday’ written in the memo line. Tell her the money is for whatever charity she wants and help her pick one out.”

Tip No. 4: Make giving a family enterprise. If greed is an acid, then philanthropy is a base. Giving money away not only has the potential to build relationships but also to impart a healthy money mind view — that is, if you take it seriously and make it a family project. “The most successful families in terms of multigenerational wealth are the ones that have a clear family identity and work really hard to bring the young ones fully into the fold,” says Schein. In many cases, this means a family foundation, multiple-day family retreats, even a family mission statement. One of the most impressive local examples is the Andrus family’s large-scale foundation, Surdna, complete with a full-color newsletter,

“It sounds really basic, but it’s really the most important thing parents can do. How you spend sends a message to your kids. Make sure you’re telling them something you want them to hear.” — NATHAN DUNGAN

Concinnity. The title means the harmonious arrangement of different parts of something. “I really push people to think about giving money away while they are still alive, and not doing a ‘money drop’ at death,” adds Schein. “It’s a bonding thing, to give money away as a family, and it gives your heirs a chance to practice while you’re alive.”

Tip No. 5: Think about how your money talks. If you don’t want to raise the next Paris Hilton, make sure you’re not grooming her for it. Don’t put up Cirque du Soleil in the backyard for her seventh birthday. Don’t buy yourself extravagant clothes or cars. Don’t put her up in an over-the-top house. “It sounds really basic, but it’s really the most important thing parents can do,” says Dungan. “How you spend sends a message to your kids. Make sure you’re telling them something you want them to hear.”

House of Leisure

The threads of the good life are all tied together at Ma(i)sonry in Napa Valley. | BY DAVID MAHONEY

A

t first glance, the stone building a block north of legendary restaurant The French Laundry on Yountville’s main street might appear to be just another charming edifice in a Napa Valley town chock-full of charm. But upon closer inspection, a colossal iron corkscrew leaning against the side of the building and a terra-cotta statue of Bart Simpson as a Chinese warrior just inside the front door send a clear signal that something out of the ordinary is happening here. Ma(i)sonry doesn’t fit neatly into preconceived categories. It’s a fine-art gallery, but also a furniture show room. It’s a sculpture garden, but also a wine-tasting salon. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places, but the art and furnishings filling the interior and outdoor spaces display a sophisticated contemporary aesthetic that deftly weaves in traditional elements. Just as resistant to pigeonholing is the path that led Ma(i)sonry’s founder to this unusual place. Michael Polenske, the Bermuda-born son of a hurricane hunter, had carved out a comfortable career in

investment banking, serving as a trusted financial advisor to the rich and famous. “I had more than a hundred billionaire families in my Rolodex,” he says, looking stylishly rumpled — and more than a tad Clooney-esque — as he relaxes with visitors in a comfortable garden seating area. In his spare time, Polenske also collected art and even started a side business as an antiques dealer. Then, about 10 years ago, he bought Blackbird Vineyards in Napa Valley. The first release of the Merlot-focused wines in 2005 was greeted with enthusiastic critical acclaim. What started out as hobbies became a way of life for Polenske when he made a bold decision to leave the investment business and redirect his energies into bringing all of his interests together under one roof. “If you pay attention, life shows you the way,” he says. (He adds with a grin: “Strangely, it’s usually at 4:30 in the morning.”) Polenske drew inspiration for Ma(i)sonry from Axel Vervoordt, the renowned Belgian designer and antiques dealer whose castle near Antwerp serves as an environmental gallery for his collections, though

he also wanted to showcase fine wines. Lacking a castle of his own, Polenske bought a sturdy stone structure in Yountville that was built by grape grower Charles Rovegno as his home more than a century earlier and had served more recently as a small inn. While the original stone walls remain, Ma(i)sonry is now home to a revolving collection of eclectic art and furnishings arrayed throughout the two-floor space and the surrounding garden. At elegantly rustic tables, guests can taste wines produced by a collective of more than 20 limited-production wineries from Napa and neighboring Sonoma County. And not only can they purchase the wine and take it with them — they can do the same with the table and chairs. The geographical outlier among the wineries represented at Ma(i)sonry is Recuerdo, an Argentinean label Polenske recently launched. Along with Ma(i)sonry and Blackbird Vineyards, it’s part of the Bespoke Collection, a portfolio of lifestyle brands assembled by Polenske. Rounding out the portfolio is I. Wolk, an art gallery Polenske acquired soon after opening Ma(i)sonry. In addition to its original location in St. Helena, the gallery came with sculpture gardens at

two high-end resorts in wine country, Auberge du Soleil in Napa and MacArthur Place in Sonoma. All of these projects play synergistic roles in Polenske’s steadfast pursuit of what he calls “the business of leisure.” Though they haven’t yet produced the financial rewards of his former profession, he is clearly not losing any sleep over it. “If I do what I love,” Polenske says, “the money follows.”

Bespoke Collection membership offers first access to a selection of limited-production wines from Blackbird Vineyards, Ma(i)sonry Napa Valley and Recuerdo Wines. Members also earn points at an accelerated rate in the Bespoke Benefits rewards program, which can be redeemed for unique experiences ranging from complimentary wine tastings at Ma(i)sonry to a complete wine country trip for two to Argentina. The Insider’s Guide to Getting In Artful Living’s inside track to the hottest tickets of 2014. |

BY ALYSSA FORD

S

old out is for suckers. If you want to get tickets to the top games, extravaganzas and parties of 2014, you might have to hustle a bit, but never count yourself out. Behold: Artful Living’s guide to schmoozing into the most-coveted seats of the season.

New York Fashion Week

WHEN: February 6 to 13 WHERE: Lincoln Center, New York City COST: Free to $700 per person Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is technically an invite-only event for industry insiders and fashion-loving editors (including our very own Hayley Dulin and Marguerite Happe). But every rule has an exception. Exhibit A: the parade of celebrities at fashion shows and other “media-only” events, such as the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Sponsors offer one potential fast track to the shows. Know anyone at Mercedes, DHL, Samsung, Beck’s Brewery, Tresemmé or Style Network? Does your

company advertise in The New York Times (another big sponsor)? Have an important account with Getty Images? Make some calls, do a little negotiating and you might just find yourself at Diane von Furstenberg’s show come February. Another option: Are you a platinum or gold American Express cardholder? Call and inquire about tickets to the Skybox, the Bill Sofield–designed lounge overlooking the runway at Lincoln Center for “preferred” AMEX cardholders. Two-show Skybox tickets start at $250 per person. Show tickets plus behind-the-scenes passes start at $700 per person. If worst comes to worst, you can always apply to be a Fashion Week volunteer, assembling gift bags and press kits and sitting at the information desk. Past volunteers report there’s not a ton to do, so there’s plenty of time to catch a runway show or 10.

Winter Olympics

WHEN: February 7 to 23 WHERE: Sochi, Russia COST: $16 to $1,600 for a single ticket X Games legend Shaun White will be hunting for a third consecutive gold on the halfpipe. Minnesota native Lindsey Vonn will be looking to make history in downhill skiing, even after a terrible knee injury at the World Championships this February. And there’s the chance of a Russia–USA ice-hockey rematch on Russian ice, reminiscent of a certain 1980 miracle. Will you experience the magic in person? It’s all happening in the Black Sea resort town of Sochi, Russia. A full 8 percent of all tickets go straight to sponsors: McDonald’s, Coca-Cola, Dow, General Electric, Omega, Panasonic, Procter & Gamble, Samsung, and Visa. Now might be a good time to check your LinkedIn account for that choice connection. If connections to corporate sponsors are scarce, it’s best to simply buy tickets through official venues. In January, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a bill decreeing that ticket brokers can be fined up to a million rubles ($33,000) for selling Olympics tickets for more than face value. Considering that Russia is shelling out $51 billion for the games — the most expensive Olympic games ever — the state just might be looking to enforce this potentially profitable new law. In the United States, the official online seller is CoSport. The site offers individual events tickets that range from $16 for ice-hockey group games to $1,600 for seats at the opening ceremony. The site also offers a mix of travel packages that include hotel and transportation to the venues. A seven-day figure-skating itinerary for two with a booking at the Zhemchuzhina Hotel, for example, is $22,432 (not including airfare).

Academy Awards

WHEN: March 2 WHERE: Dolby Theatre, Los Angeles COST: Free, but expect serious networking Of all the hot tickets, a pass into Dolby Theatre on Oscar Sunday may be the most precious of all. Simply consider the math: There are roughly 6,000 members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, yet the auditorium seats but 3,332 people. Each nominee and presenter, whether an Academy member or not, receives two complimentary tickets to the ceremony. The rest are bought up by eager Academy members who want to attend the best night of networking all year.

202 Artful Living

| Winter 2014

Which is not to say that the unwashed masses have not sneaked their way into the high-wattage glare of movie stars. Consider Robert Opel, who streaked across the stage on Oscar night in 1974, coolly flashing a peace sign as he went. Or the couple in 2001 that paid $10,000 for a pair of balcony seats but was thrown out before the curtain went up. The AMPAS is hardcore about sleuthing out anyone who paid for scalped tickets, what with celebrity stalkers on the constant prowl. Academy members get their tickets the weekend before the show with a sternly worded warning that they should not be transferred or sold, under pain of that attendee being branded a trespasser and sternly escorted to the street. Thus, Artful Living cannot recommend buying tickets to the Academy Awards under any circumstances. We would, however, suggest becoming best friends with these former or current Minnesotans: directors/writers Joel and Ethan Coen (A Serious Man, True Grit); producer Bill Pohlad (Brokeback Mountain, Tree of Life); set decorator Jim Erickson (Lincoln, There Will Be Blood); producer Jim Burke (The Descendants); actor John Hawkes (Lincoln, The Sessions); sound mixer Drew Kunin (Life of Pi, Eat Pray Love) and director Pete Docter (Up, Wall-E). The best connection of all might be Carl Schuster, St. Louis Park native and head honcho of Wolfgang Puck Catering. Schuster and his team have catered the Academy Awards’ Governors Ball, the no-media, no-paparazzi party that happens right after the big show. Perhaps he needs an extra dishwasher or waiter? If your contacts list is short on Hollywood power players, you might register to be a seat filler and pop into Jennifer Lawrence’s chair for a few minutes when she needs to use the loo. Register at seatfiller.com and expect a full background check and an extended wait time.

Monaco Grand Prix

WHEN: May 22 to May 25 WHERE: Monte Carlo, Monaco COST: $6,500 per person and up Formula 1 great Nelson Piquet once quipped that the Grand Prix was like “riding a bike around your living room.” It’s an apt description. There’s no other race in the world where drivers must navigate the hairpin turns of real European streets at an excess of 170 miles per hour. It is virtually the same track that William Grover-Williams dominated in his British racing green Bugatti 35B back in 1929, the first year of the storied race. On racing Sunday, the 20,000 grandstand seats are long sold-out, and another 60,000 people watch from rock ledges, decks, balconies or a berth in the port. Royals, celebrities and high-dollar sponsors watch the race from moored yachts. To join the well-heeled party, charter a yacht capable of sleeping 10 to 12 people for a cool $80,000 to $115,000 for four days. Renting an apartment with a balcony view of the main straightaway costs about $80,000 for the week. Althaus Yachting is one firm that handles such arrangements. Another option is a seven-day cruise package that stops at Cannes, France, just in time for the film festival and culminates in Monte Carlo for the big race. The cruise includes airfare as well as top-tier grandstand seating for the Saturday time trials and Sunday race. The package costs $6,500 per person and up, depending on your room choice. See windstarcruises.com for details.

The Masters

WHEN: April 10 to 13 WHERE: Augusta National Golf Club, Augusta, Georgia COST: $250 to $7,000 for a single, four-day tourney badge, depending on your connections Is Georgia on your mind? You’re not the only one. Each year, tens of thousands of golf fans flock to Augusta National for the first major golf tournament of the year. The 300 or so members of Augusta National can purchase face-value “badges”— never tickets, how plebeian — but the club frowns on members who sell to the secondary market, and so everything must be done with the utmost discretion. Minnesota members include 87-year-old investor Whee Whitney, 97-year-old former Toro executive David Lilly, Toro heir Bruce Lilly, former Hormel exec Robert Waller and former pro player John Harris. If you’re lacking a connection to an actual green jacket, your next bet is to find someone who was savvy enough to get on the badge list way

back when. (Augusta National closed its list of “lifetime patrons” in 1978 and launched a waiting list. People only graduate from the waiting list when a ticket holder passes away, adding an additional level of grief to more than one funeral.) Your third orbit is an actual player in the tournament, but keep in mind they receive just eight badges, so they’d better owe you a giant favor. If all your savvy connections have added up to one big goose egg, then the pricey secondary market may be your last call of port. Prices fluctuate wildly; Tiger Woods headed into last year’s Masters on a hot streak, and thus some four-day badges were selling on the street for more than $7,000. Thus, Artful Living highly recommends planning and buying ahead. Consider a tour package through legal brokers such as SGH Golf or sportstravel.com. At the time of this writing, 2014 full-tourney packages, including hospitality, hotel rooms and badges, were being offered for about $5,000 per person. If you’re feeling lucky, you might also register for tournament tickets through Augusta National. The venerable club offers a scant handful of tickets each year to lottery winners. Throw in your hat at masters.com.

2014 World Cup

WHEN: June 12 to July 13 WHERE: Twelve host cities in Brazil, each with new or updated stadiums COST: $90 and up per seat On Aug. 20, 2013, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association opened up its random lottery for 2014 World Cup tickets. Within seven hours, the organization logged more than 1 million lottery

draw applications. Within 24 hours, FIFA received 2.3 million ticket applications, a new record for the 83-year-old tourney. Demand for tickets is always high, but many football fanatics expect 2014 to blow past World Cups out of the proverbial water. For one, beautiful and futbolístico Brazil is the host country for the first time since 1950, and the Americans have qualified (USA! USA!). According to FIFA, Americans were the third-largest nationality requesting spots in the 2014 lottery, bested only by Brazilians and Argentines. After the lottery phase is over, World Cup tickets will be sold first-come, first-served in two phases, starting February 26 and April 15, at fifa.com. Look for prices to range anywhere from $90 a seat for the earlier matches to $990 a seat for a great vantage at the July 13 final in Rio. FIFA expects the entire semifinal round to sell out, so set your alarm. Tickets are printed with buyers’ names and gate officials randomly check passport photos, so buying from a scalper is somewhat of a gamble. FIFA also offers hospitality packages that include preferential parking, private suites, dedicated servers and unlimited drinks. These start at $750 and go up quickly. See hospitality.fifa.com. About 5 percent of all the match tickets go straight to official sponsors. Know any higher-ups at Adidas, Coca-Cola, Hyundai, Sony, Visa, Budweiser, Johnson & Johnson, or McDonald’s? Now may be the time to cash in that favor. If you’re looking for the ultimate World Cup experience, Ker & Downey has put together several World Cup–themed luxury packages, including a four-bedroom beach home in Búzios with private helicopter transfers and tickets for your whole crew to the final round match on June 28, the semifinal on July 5 and the final on July 13. All yours, not including airfare, for $720,000.
