s I was sitting in the front row at the Monique Lhuillier show at New York Fashion Week, it hit me: High fashion is not for those seeking familiarity and comfort. Fashion is always a moving target. What was poor taste one season becomes the highest form of chic the next. Traditionally speaking, fashion refers to anything that is a current trend in look and dress of a person. There is an important distinction between trends and fads. A fad, sometimes called a meme or a craze, is driven by emotional excitement and peer pressure. A fad is said to “catch on” when the number of people adopting it begins to increase rapidly. A fad will normally fade quickly once the perception of novelty is gone. Though the terms trend and fad are used interchangeably, fads tend to be fleeting behaviors whereas trends are considered behaviors that evolve into relatively permanent changes. This issue of Artful Living is packed full of content to whet your fashion appetite and provide entertainment and information about real trends in glamour and style. Speaking of glam, we are excited to announce our media sponsorship for Macy’s Glamorama in August. Look for more coverage in our summer issue. Fashion also transcends to home. Check out the home section, where we cover the state-of-the-art for baths and bathrooms. As you might know, Artful Living is the official magazine of International Market Square. If you are looking to remodel or update your home, check out IMS and their open-to-the-public show rooms for the best in new ideas. Our destination takes us to Chicago for the best in restaurants, hotels, fashion, sightseeing, and local influencers. I hope you enjoy this issue of Artful Living. Evolve your own style instead of following the winds of fashion. Consider erring on the bold side and being your own fashionista. The best feeling comes from loving the clothes you’re in. Cheers,

Where Heritage Meets Style A Minnesota-born company takes on New York. | BY JACKIE MORGAN

W

ith more than 100 years of experience under its belt, Duluth Pack made its Barneys New York debut last fall with a line of men’s totes and backpacks. Hand stitched and sewn in Duluth, these carefully crafted bags are a must-have for men. Duluth Pack’s humble roots date back to 1882, when Camille Poirer, a Frenchman living in Duluth, put patent on a canvas sack that latched with a buckle flap and had other first-time features like an umbrella holder and adjustable straps. This classic sack, known as the original Duluth Pack, is still offered today. Fast forward to the early 1900s when Poirer opened up a shop at 1610 West Superior Street, where it can still be found today. Known then as Duluth Tent and Awning Company, the business was based on making awnings for local lumber barons, shipping magnates, railroad tycoons and even big shots in the iron-ore business. At that time, there were more millionaires per capita in Duluth than anywhere in the country. Present-day Duluth Pack has a legacy of creating long-lasting products for hard-working people. Backed by a lifetime warranty, each piece is hand stitched from start to finish by the same sewer, some of whom have been with the company for more than 20 years. Sewers take their work seriously, stitching their initials on the inside tag as a finishing touch. With the growing need for a bag that functions, lasts and looks fabulous, Barneys New York and Duluth Pack teamed up to bring the now-popular rugged look to city dwellers. Duluth Pack’s classic shape and superior function united with Barney’s exceptional materials and color palettes make these bags the complete package: style and heritage. Pictured above is the Wanderer Pack, $595, available at barneys.com.

Our patients have called us their top doctors for over 30 years. My 21 year old daughter had breast implants with Dr. Leigh. She and I are incredibly pleased with the attention she received and what an incredible job he did. I was so impressed, that I am having a tummy tuck, lipo and breast augmentation/lift done. During my consult with Dr. Leigh he sat and answered every one of the questions in my notebook for me. I am very excited and VERY confident in his work!” Dr. Philbin did my tummy tuck in January 2011. I had a “roll” on my stomach since the birth of my first child. I had gastric bypass surgery and the roll did not go away. Dr Philbin did my tummy. From my consultation to the operation and forward I have been treated extremely well! I could not ever have asked for more from anyone. The whole staff is caring and compassionate. I would suggest Edina Plastic Surgery to anyone!” Dr. Wilke, I received my before and after photos from you today and I had to send you this note and say “THANK YOU”!! Wow, what a difference, what a beautiful difference. I am more than pleased with the results of my breast augmentation. Since the surgery, every time I look in the mirror I smile, as I am truly overjoyed with what I see. You are a fabulous doctor! I could not have picked anyone better.” Free consults. Buttoned-Up Minneapolis Clothier John Meegan talks men’s fashion. |

BY ALYSSA FORD

I

t was the fashion shot heard round the city. In the summer of 2004, Target corporate employees got a surprise e-mail. The company’s long-standing casual dress code, the e-mail read, was henceforth history. Chinos, jeans, polos and sneakers of all types would be banished in favor of collared shirts, ties and polished dress shoes. “We like to say we heard the screams all the way from downtown,” says John Meegan, owner of Top Shelf in south Minneapolis, a custom men’s clothier. In the six years since “A new breed of gents are the infamous Target e-mail, Minneapolis’s new formal walking Twin Cities streets, persona has only grown in putting blood flow back into intensity. Like Target, more Twin Cities companies have styles that haven’t been hot buttoned-up their dress codes. in more than 40 years. The recession has played its part, too, with more workers competing to get (or keep) good jobs. But there’s something in the zeitgeist too, says Meegan: “It’s a little bit of pushback against the 1990s, the decade that almost destroyed fashion.” He adds that this is a true revival of men’s fashion, fueled by “Mad Men” and other pop-culture icons and bolstered mostly by 20 and 30-somethings. “It’s a tidal wave,” says Meegan. “Last year was one of our best in more than 30 years.” A new breed of gents are walking Twin Cities streets, putting blood flow back into styles that haven’t been hot in more than 40 years. From his tailoring perch in south Minneapolis, here’s what Meegan is seeing now.

NO. 1: SLIM SHIRTS A traditional tailor’s cut on a men’s dress shirt is 4 inches — as in 4 inches of fabric beyond the actual size of a man’s chest, waist and hips. But in the past few years, Meegan has cut custom shirts 2 inches or even just 1 inch beyond the body, creating a shirt so slim “it almost looks like it’s been painted on,” he says. The look is popular but not entirely practical. “If that guy gains just a little bit of weight, the buttons are going to spread and that custom shirt is no longer going to fit.” To find a happy medium, Meegan prompts his more fashionable patrons toward

a 2.5-inch fit. Plus, he’s adding back darts for the first time since the 1970s. That way, he says, a gentleman can have his fashionable slim-cut shirt and the possibility of getting it altered when he, ahem, grows out.

NO. 2: EVEN SLIMMER TIES The revolution started about five years ago, when men’s fashion designers began toying with plain-front (rather than pleated) pants. This look produced shorter coats, which begat shorter collars, which yielded narrower legs and then, finally, led to skinny ties, some as slim as 6 centimeters across. The trim, fitted look is so hot right now that Meegan is recommending alterations for men with a closet full of wide ties and long jackets. “The rule is, if the alteration is 20 percent or less of what it would cost to replace the item, then it’s a smart

looking sharp Men’s fashion is taking on a more tailored look, complete with slimmer shirts and skinny ties. 37 Artful Living

investment,” says Meegan. He has had more than a few gentlemen bring in a bag of silk neckties and ask to have them narrowed to fit the look of the times. “From a cost perspective, it really makes sense,” he says.

NO. 3: WOOL FOR ALL SEASONS It started when sheep producers figured out that Spanish merino sheep produce the softest, most luxurious wool when they’re raised in Australia and New Zealand’s sunny climate. Then, five years ago, a few high-end manufacturers in Italy perfected a technology that can make wool as airy as a pair of silk boxers. “It sounds unbelievable, but it’s true,” says Meegan. “The new wool is as light as summer cotton and seersucker.” Through a process called “super twisting”, the fine threads of wool are made extra-curly during the weaving process, which means the fibers spring back against pressure and shed wrinkles in about 5 minutes. What does this mean for men? Wool suits for summertime. Yes, really. NO. 4: 80/20 In the Midwest, Meegan says, men worry too much about matching, about making sure their tie is the same color as their shirt. “Some men in the Twin Cities, they’re like Garanimals perfect,” says Meegan. Thankfully, there’s a new, liberating code: 80/20. As in, make 80 percent of your look conservative, and 20 percent not. Like a custom, pinstripe suit with mob-inspired Fluevog shoes. Or an expensive sport jacket with ripped jeans. Or a pair of presidential Park Avenue shoes paired with tribal-patterned socks. To play, says Meegan, “is fashion at its finest.”

hat do you get when an award-winning beauty writer creates a skin-care line? Products that deliver what they promise, for starters. “I’ve tried practically everything on the market. I know what works, and the rest just smells nice,” says Elizabeth Dehn. A self-professed product junkie who grew up making facial masks for friends. She went on to work for Aveda and Kiehl’s and later cover the beauty beat for Minnesota Monthly, the Star Tribune, Twin Cities Live and, most recently, on her popular website, BeautyBets.com. This spring, Dehn debuts an eponymous skin-care collection that includes three of her must-have products: an antioxidant-rich facial serum for all skin types; a citrusy facial mist that hydrates skin and refreshes makeup; and a super-rich, soothing shea cream for face and body. The serum is a real standout. Gorgeously scented with organic rose absolute, this concentrated cocktail of 12 luxurious plant oils includes unrefined shea to fight fine lines and rebuild collagen, borage oil to relieve redness and irritation, rosehip seed oil to diminish sun damage and evening primrose to give skin a rosy glow. “It’s literally food for the skin,” says Dehn, who swears by face oil for a dewy complexion. Although the entire line is free of chemicals, questionable preservatives and synthetic ingredients, you’d never know by looking at it. That’s because Dehn believes that natural and luxurious need not be mutually exclusive. “I selfishly wanted pure, effective products that look pretty on my bathroom shelf,” she says. Too shea. obility always brought with it massive amounts of jewelry. But it was all bespoke jewelry, meaning it was totally custom. You could not walk into a jewelry store 150 years ago and buy high-quality jewelry. Then, as the middle class started becoming wealthier, they wanted to copy what the aristocrats were doing. Jewelers realized this and started creating suites of jewelry. Bespoke jewelry was still high-end jewelry, but it also exposed people who were coming up in wealth to another level of aspiration. It wasn’t just the beautiful homes, it wasn’t just sending the kids to Eton; it was also jewelry on your wives — or mistresses. During the 1850s, jewelers started carrying these wonderful en suite pieces. This one is demi-parure, because it’s three pieces or less. I’ve seen parures of up to eight or nine pieces. When you get them that large and they’re still intact after 150 years, you’re dealing with some phenomenal jewelry. I always tell people when you’re looking at pieces that are presented in their box, make sure that the jewelry always lived in that box. And I can tell by how these pieces fit into the box they’re the original pieces, by the wear and the imprint and how it fits exactly. They’ve been living in this box for 160 years. I also know this piece was made after the Gold Rush because there’s a lot of gold and it’s very substantial. Prior to the California Gold Rush, and probably the Australian rush, gold was lighter. It was repousséd, which allowed jewelers to push it and make it thin but still give it strength. There’s also a lot of use of color. In the 1850s, there weren’t a lot of electric lights. Jewelry worn at night tended to have more color and fewer diamonds, because in candlelight there’s no way to show off your diamonds; color shows better.

Fashionable Finds Alecia Stevens reviews this season’s must-see media.

The Sartorialist

This isn’t just a book. It’s a blog. If you love fashion, there is one copious source for an (almost) daily hit. I don’t go to sleep at night without checking on the latest Sartorialist offerings from the streets of Milan, Florence or New York. Blogger Scott Schuman began in 2005 with street smarts and a camera to create an online fashion diary. With an interest in all things fashion on the ascendancy, and print publishing on the wane, Schuman’s timing was spot on. He turned a personal passion for the style-savvy into a blog with more than 120,000 visitors a day, a book published in 2009 with a world tour, a column for GQ magazine and a show of his photography in Tokyo this year. Fast Company voted him one of the top 100 most creative people in business for 2010. And the guy’s nice, too. thesartorialist.com

Bill Cunningham New York, A Documentary Film

Every Sunday morning, the first section I pull out of the Times is the style section. I turn to page four, where the original “man on the street,” Bill Cunningham, the iconic chronicler of street fashion for “On the Street” and charity soirees for “Evening Hours” for the New York Times, has captured the past week in fashion. His keen eye latches onto a theme, and, with infectious enthusiasm, he brings New York street fashion to my living room. Now 80 years old, Cunningham is best known for navigating the streets of New York on his Schwinn bike with a camera bag across his chest. He’s trusted by the most famous in the fashion industry for his humanity, grace and good eye: even diva Anna Wintour (editor in chief of Vogue) admits to “dressing for Bill.” On March 11, a new film about his life and work entitled Bill Cunningham New York opened at the Film Forum in New York before opening around the country. It is already winning awards. zeitgeistfilms.com/billcunninghamnewyork

Seventh Heaven

Restauranteur David Koch offers insight about innovating the Twin Cities dining scene. | BY LORI STORM

D

avid Koch knows how to make a scene. In fact, he’s made a career out of bringing innovative dining and nightlife concepts to Minnesota. He’s the force behind such hot spots as South Beach, Escape Ultra Lounge and Bellanotte. Artful Living spoke with the entrepreneur about opening and overseeing Seven, the three-level downtown Minneapolis destination with a little something for everyone.

Why did you want to go into the restaurant business? I’ve always liked the social interaction with people. My goal was to come up with a business where I could incorporate everything that a person would want in going out to achieve an experience they wouldn’t forget.

What prompted you to open Seven in 2007? It was a very outgoing project for the time. What I wanted to do was create an event destination that was second to none. You could come in and you could have an upscale dining experience — then you could go upstairs and have drinks. You could also sit back in the Ultralounge and be in a stunning social environment where you could hear good music and hang out with your friends. There’s also a 6,000-square-foot Skybar.

You’ve hinted that some changes are in the works for Seven. You can look forward to an updated, forward-thinking Seven Skybar that will emerge in the early summer. You can look for some more interesting things to happen that will set some trends for downtown nightlife. They’ll be all kinds of different things that haven’t been done in the marketplace.

Suit Yourself A true couturier, Mira Couture in Chicago’s Gold Coast offers classic formalwear that doesn’t break the bank. | BY IVY GRACIE

W

e live in a prêt-à-porter world, buying off the rack and crossing our fingers as we cram our unique curves into cookie-cutter clothing. And each season we dutifully accept the fashion dicta du jour, no matter how ridiculous jump suits, boot sandals, stirrup pants or unflattering words splayed across backsides, muffin tops, anything orange. But what if our clothes were designed to fit our bodies — and ours alone? What if we could select the fabric from some of the most revered

What if our one-of-a-kind creations cost up to 45 percent less than virtually identical garments with designer labels? design houses in the world? And what if our one-of-a-kind creations cost up to 45 percent less than virtually identical garments with designer labels? Sound like a dream? It’s not. For more than 40 years, Mira Couture in Chicago’s Gold Coast has been turning high-fashion fantasies into cost-effective couture for women in the Windy City and around the country. In a sprawling corner suite on the mezzanine level of a high-rise just off State Street, the Mira Couture showroom’s golden-hued hardwood floors and Old World furniture evoke a gentler era when custom clothing was de rigueur. Displays of suits and dresses illustrate an array of design possibilities, while racks of billowing wedding gowns line up in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows, almost as if to muffle the noise wafting up from the street below. Beyond the décor, a luxuriant assortment of designer fabrics in chic colors, patterns and textures is enough to inspire gasps, sighs and moans of delight. “There are jobbers who go to the fashion houses,” explains Mira Horoszowski, designer and owner of Mira Couture. “They purchase whatever fabrics Chanel or Chloé or Prada are not using. And they come to me first because they know I will use them.” But don’t be misled by the luxury — one of

51 Artful Living

| Spring 2011

the biggest draws to Mira Couture is reasonable pricing. “A designer jacket can run as high as $4,000,” Horoszowski asserts. “I sell the whole suit for $2,200.” Unlike high-end retailers, Mira Couture handles design, production and sales all under one roof, eliminating the need for — and markup from — middlemen. And that results in palatable prices on creations that, oftentimes, differ from their designer counterparts only by the label inside. Buying custom clothing isn’t as timeconsuming as one might think — a long weekend in Chicago is time enough to create the makings of a new wardrobe. “If it’s your first time here, I try to schedule the first appointment early in the morning,” notes Horoszowski. “If it’s a suit, I can make a pair of pants, maybe a dress, maybe two jackets. We’ll find out what you had in mind. Then we do sketches so you understand exactly what we’re doing. After that, we measure you and send you on your way.” But don’t go too far — the first fitting happens that afternoon. “We’ll have made the pattern and cut the garments so you can see it and still make decisions, like if the color looks good, or if the sleeves should be modified or if there should be a cuff or not,” says Horoszowski. The following day brings the second, final fitting to approve the design and sizing. After that, Mira’s team shifts into production overdrive. And in about two weeks, the finished garments are shipped. Evening and cocktail attire are also part of Mira’s repertoire, with custom creations ranging from subtly chic to head-turning Hollywood. In addition, the couturier offers both custom bridal wear and a showroom full of gowns by Paloma Blanca, Stephen Yearick and other high-end designers. No matter the type of garment, Horoszowski cites classical styling, fine fabric and flawless fit as the cornerstones of her creations. “I’m always practical when I design,” she declares. “I think about the future of my gown or suit or dress. And I tell people to invest in quality pieces they’ll have for years. Then they can buy something that’s stylish right now and mix it with their classical stuff. You should be able to combine things — that’s what classic is.”

A Dapper Designer Artful Living sits down with up-and-coming fashion designer Wes Gordon, who is creating a fashion frenzy. | BY HAYLEY DULIN

Artful Living: Most people don’t know you lived in Edina and on Lake Minnetonka for a time. How was it growing up there? Wes Gordon: It was such a beautiful place, with probably the prettiest summers around, even though the twomonth duration is quick-lived. I lived in Minnesota until I was in fourth grade; I moved from Edina to Minnetonka Beach. I have great memories living on the lake — Woodhill/Minikahda swim meets and Camp Lincoln summer camp. AL: Did any of your influence come from that time? WG: I went to Breck, and they had a fantastic arts program. I was really able to advance my interests in the arts. AL: Growing up in Atlanta, Georgia, you likely have some Southern influences. Any trends in particular? WG: The South is so beautiful; there is a drama and romance about it. There are gorgeous homes and gardens that are truly romantic. I also look to places like Savannah, which has such rich history, and that definitely influences my designs. AL: What is the difference between designing in the London fashion world and designing in New York?

WG: London has amazing heritage in tailoring, and they are often avantgarde in what they are doing. For Americans, this doesn’t always translate well. Americans welcome clothes that they can throw on and look great in. London is about questioning trends, being experimental and sometimes being bizarre. AL: How was interning for renowned fashion designers Tom Ford and Oscar de la Renta? WG: Amazing. They are two of the most reputable guys in fashion. Tom is a menswear designer, and Oscar is primarily women’s wear. They are two amazing masters at what they do. AL: In your opinion, what is the biggest spring fashion trend? A lot of pleating in blouses and skirts. Fresh contrast, from chartreuse and whites to wide-leg pants. Girls ahead of the curve will be wearing wide-leg pants. Also there will be a push [for] cool separates with more options other than dresses. AL: Where do you draw inspiration from for your own line? WG: Everywhere! Films, books, art, travel. My biggest source of inspiration, however, is my friends. I’m always thinking what the cool and stylish women I know would like to wear next.

AL: Can you tell me about your fall 2011 line you recently launched? WG: I just presented my third collection, fall 2011. It’s a celebration of all things luxe: rich panne velvets, embroideries, furs and cashmeres — creating a palate you want to touch. With an aesthetic inspired by iconic beauties like Charlotte Rampling, Catherine Deneuve and Anna Karina, we created fresh and feminine looks that are great additions to any wardrobe. AL: If you could have a recurring theme, what would your signature Wes Gordon look be? WG: Tailoring. We always have great coats and jackets. My signature look would be a chic smoking coat with a skinny pant. AL: Do you have any predictions for the field of design? WG: The recession taught people to value the special items. Women will be more willing to invest in quality pieces that are a work of art rather than items that you can only wear for a season. AL: What’s your favorite neighborhood in New York? WG: I Just moved to NoHo in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, down the street from the Bowery Hotel. Il Buco is a favorite spot in that neighborhood. I also love Gramercy Park.

he 11th floor of Macy’s in Chicago’s Loop is a labyrinth of narrow corridors winding past cramped, indistinguishable offices that haven’t changed much in size or style since the building opened as the flagship of the Marshall Field’s retail dynasty in 1915. But a few strategic turns lead to a room so voluminous it’s incongruous with the clustered spaces surrounding it. Ceilings tower over expansive ribbons of waisthigh work tables strewn with sewing supplies and fabric swatches. Racks of clothing samples line up expectantly along the room’s perimeter like actors at a casting call. This is the Chicago Fashion Incubator, where every year six up-and-coming designers are selected to spend one year learning the business of fashion, where design dreams are turned into rack-ready realities and where Chicago is fine-tuning its image as a leading fashion city. Fanciful as fashion might appear, it’s a business — big business. “Fashion has a really high consumer aspect,” explains Kiran Advani of the Chicago Office of Tourism. “Shopping is the number 1 tourist activity for people visiting Chicago.” But its cultural and economic impact isn’t limited to tourism; a thriving fashion industry means more manufacturing, retail and job opportunities for Chicagoans. Until recently, the city was hemorrhaging graduates from the six design education programs in Chicagoland; a lack of opportunities drove them elsewhere. In 2005, Mayor Richard M. Daley took notice and took action, establishing the Mayor’s Fashion Council to devise strategies for supporting fashion in Chicago. From there, CFI came into being. “We have to support emerging designers so they can grow and eventually hire,” says designer Lara Miller, executive director

Pablo Picasso of CFI. “Not to mention the manufacturing sector — we need to support that as well.” Under the umbrella of the Chicago Office of Tourism, CFI launched its first yearlong program in 2008. Since then, local designers have been lining up to apply for the six coveted designer-in-residence positions. Throughout the year, they participate in more than 80 workshops and roundtables hosted by industry professionals, addressing the areas of law, accounting and finance, design, manufacturing, production, branding, marketing and sales. And all the while they’re fine-tuning their lines to bring them to market. It doesn’t hurt that the program is housed in the second-largest department store in the world; at any given moment designersin-residence can drop downstairs into Macy’s to scope out new trends in design, display and merchandising. At the same time, they have immediate access to Macy’s buyers, salespeople and other retail experts in the corporate structure. This year’s grads are transitioning into the market with fresh perspectives on everything from lingerie to menswear. Christina Fan’s C/Fan line blends menswear-inspired details with feminine silhouettes; Killian Gui by Donaldo Smith is an elegant, contemporary business and casual menswear line. Alidade by Leah Fagan fuses style and performance with a women’s sportswear line designed for a commuting lifestyle, while Jonnie Rettele’s Nonnie Threads takes inspiration from the 1900s and infuses it into a 21st-century menswear line. Nature inspired Miriam Carlson’s Miriam Cecilia line of deconstructed women’s wear; Dottie’s Delights is Stephina Kuhr’s high-end homage to vintage lingerie. Like the designers before them, the grads can count on their rare designation as CFI alums to propel their careers. “All the designers who have left the program, if it made sense for their brand, are selling nationally — some internationally,” Miller asserts. “It’s understood that if you’ve gone through this program you’ll have everything in order.” CFI’s reputation is glowing as well, not only as a breeding ground for well-rounded designers, but as an example of a city embracing and supporting the fashion industry. “We’ve got an incubator; New York just opened one in the spring,” Advani declares. “We’ve got a Web site [ChicagoFashionResource.com]; New York started a website in the spring.” And Chicago is taking center stage as a flourishing design destination. “We’re still learning,” admits Advani, “but we’re growing and evolving — just like the fashion industry.”

Mod Mirrored Sconces

Why I love this trend: There have been mirrored sconces for as long as there have been electric lights, but the shapes this season are so mod and interesting. Currey & Company leads this pack with its romantic tarnish finishes. Get the look: Starburst two-light sconce by Currey & Company in Granello Silver Leaf

Chunky Silver Accessories

Why I love this trend: Silver accessories add shine and glam but can come off a little too precious at times. To keep things casual and lively, go for fat and chunky accents, like these art deco–inspired candleholders. Get the look: Deco Diamond candleholders by Global Views

Computer-Minded Case Pieces

Why I love this trend: We all need a comfy place to work on our laptops. So why not do it in style? I like this secretary desk in particular for its sultry shape, generous workspace and modern riff on the Greek key design. Get the look: French Key Secretary in Dark Oak by Global Views

Wing Chairs with Attitude

Why I love this trend: Wing chairs are wonderfully versatile. And they’re even more inspired when you dress them in fun upholstery. Get the look: Chilton Wing Chair by Jessica Charles in Cub Cocoa upholstery with nail-head trim

Paint-By-Number Rugs

Why I love this trend: Conventional wisdom says that you should design a room from the ground up because there are only so many rug designs, and custom rugs are astronomically expensive. But new technologies are allowing high-end rug vendors to offer custom coloring for insanely reasonable prices. It’s like playing Paint By Number, but on a gorgeous, tufted wool rug. Get the look: (ABOVE) Infinity New Zealand wood rug by Masland, style I-1009. Color-code with more than 160 shades.

Ottoman, with a Twist

Why I love this trend: I’m crazy for all the new furniture pieces that add a hint of exotic styling — a little taste of Algiers, a whisper of Rabat. It’s so lighthearted and fun. Get the look: Ivory leather Moroccan ottoman with nickel tacks by Global Views

Peekaboo Coffee Tables

Why I love this trend: This is really clever: a coffee table split down the middle to reveal a spot of surprising color. There’s an element of unexpected intrigue to it. And it actually makes your coffee table a lot more versatile and usable. Get the look: Secret round low table by JeanMichel Wilmotte for Holly Hunt

Laser-Cut Fabrics

Why I love this trend: I am all over this trend. At LiLu, my fellow designers and I have been using laser-cut fabric on window treatments with abandon lately. The look is so dimensional and fresh. You can use the panels alone or layer with another fabric for a different mode. Get the look: Microfiber polyester taffeta Sand Dollar laser-cut fabric by Bart Halpern

Fornasetti-Inspired Accents Why I love this trend: Bold graphics

are showing up everywhere as of late, but I think Christian LaCroix’s new collection is really fabulous. Case in point: these two-sided throw pillows. One side has a wild array of black and white stripes; on the other side is a Photoshopped street scene that straddles the line between dreamlike and downright surreal. I love the idea of this pillow on a bold-colored sofa. Get the look: Forum pillow by Christian LaCroix for Designer’s Guild

Fresh Plaids

Why I love this trend: Plaids are going way beyond school-girl chic these days. I’m using more plaids than ever before because there are so many fresh new color combos out there, with purples, charcoals, chartreuses and crisp white. The next gen of plaid has finally arrived. Get the look: Wexford plaid by Osborne & Little, in Chartreuse color way

Large-Scale Ikat Patterns

Why I love this trend: A few vendors are getting playful with traditionally woven ikat cloth and producing patterns that still have a global vibe, but are more watercolor-y and Marimekko-ish. Really lovely stuff. Get the look: 100-percent cotton Española Way fabric in Cobalt by Designer’s Guild

Feminine Lighting with an Attitude

Why I love this trend: I love lighting that is elegant, sophisticated and super-playful. The Perfect Hue Color trends are more than what meets the eye. | BY CHRIS WINDMILLER

W

hether you realize it, the decisions we make regarding the color of a T-shirt or the paint for a wall are usually based on how that color makes us feel. Color can have a powerful emotional effect, so we choose hues to stimulate different moods. For example, a vibrant red stirs the appetite, while a cool blue soothes the soul. As the foundation of nature, green gives us a feeling of retreat from materialistic, bustling everyday life. Much research goes into what colors are appropriate for upcoming color trends to be seen on the runway, in homes and for product lines. The Pantone name is known worldwide as the standard language for color communication, from designer to manufacturer to retailer to customer. Each year, Pantone announces the “color of the year.” The chosen color affects and directs designers everywhere. The chosen color is not just randomly plucked out of the 3,000-plus swatches in the Pantone book; there is a great amount of research that goes into the selection. The decision is influenced by social issues, the economy, technology, entertainment and most importantly, the needs, moods, fantasies and aspirations of consumers. This year’s Pantone color of choice is honeysuckle: a dynamic reddish pink that’s encouraging and uplifting. It instills the confidence, courage and spirit needed to meet the exhausting challenges that have become part of everyday life. A lively pink can act as a veritable cheerleader for the soul. “Honeysuckle is a captivating, stimulating color that gets the adrenaline going — perfect to ward off the blues,” explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “The intensity of this festive reddish pink allures and engages. In fact, this color — not the sweet fragrance of the flower blossoms for which it was named — is what attracts hummingbirds to nectar.”

ON THE RUNWAY

FRAZER HARRISON

STUART RAMSON

After several seasons of minimalist-inspired neutral palettes, it’s time for some excitement. Designer fashion is getting comfortable again with bright, saturated colors. Honeysuckle has been used in the incoming color-blocking trend. This color will be seen rendered in a vast variety of fabrics, from the more precious, like silk, to the more everyday, like jersey. Honeysuckle is a color that draws attention to itself, acting as a focal point in an ensemble. It’s a great way to brighten the tans and grays that have been dominating wardrobes for the past few years. It’s also fashionable to layer a bright hue like honeysuckle over or under other colors that have some intensity.

IN THE HOME

Honeysuckle breathes life back into the interior environment after a long cold winter. According to Jeanne Murphy Curtis of Minneapolis based Bella! Design for Living, introducing a vase of Gerbera daisies in this fresh hue is a fantastic and inexpensive way to usher in spring and pay homage to Pantone’s Color of the year. She also recommends LEFT Badgley-Mischka for their spring 2011 collection, modeled introducing natural fibers such as linen in this saturated during New York Fashion Week. RIGHT Luca Luca Fall 2011 fashion tone to boost any color scheme. “Consider pairing some show, for New York Fashion Week. solid honeysuckle-colored pillows with ones featuring an over-scaled pink and white graphic print to add interest to a neutral sofa or bedding ensemble and bring your interior up to speed with the current trends.” She likes Schumacher’s Bryton Linen Herringbone in Azalea for $72/yd with Good Day Sunshine in Flamingo for $55/ yd. For a little whimsy, she loves the 14x18 Fuschia Rope Canvas Pillow by hableconstruction.com for $125. Jeanne Fuschia Rope encourages homeowners to mix it up, “Honeysuckle is an Canvas Pillow By extremely versatile color. You can pair it with other warm Hable Construction colors such as tangerine, chocolate, or buttercup for a bold look with incredible warmth. For a palette infused with fresh, youthful energy, juxtapose it with soft pastels. Or if cool tones are your preference, pair honeysuckle with pale blues, French grays and khakis to create a serene “Keep in mind that this is a powerful color. It palette reminiscent of a doesn’t need to be used in great quantity to sunrise on the beach.” final advice, “Keep have impact; instead, think about incorporating Her in mind, that this is it in small, poignant accents like a precious, a powerful color. Dolce & Gabbana Spring/Summer 2011 Collection I love the new collection from DG with all the white cotton dresses and lace detailing. It’s so fresh and delicate. Look 16 from Dolce & Gabbana, $1,895, select DG boutiques, dolcegabbana.it

Fendista Platform Pump from Fendi This is the classic black pump, but with an elevated, sexy twist. If these sultry shoes could talk, they would say “Come hither.” $730, Saks Fifth Avenue, saksfifthavenue.com

Cruel Intentions Perfume Killian Hennessy, the 38-year-old heir to the Hennessy Cognac fortune, has created a niche line of fragrances called By Killian. My favorite is Cruel Intentions, Tempt Me. It’s dark, smoky, leathery and spicy, with just a touch of sweet vanilla. It’s not unlike wearing a dash of really fine Cognac. $225 for 1.7 ounces, Bergdorf Goodman, bergdorfgoodman.com

Spanish Sweet Smoked Paprika This delicate spice is slow-smoked over oak fires and has vibrant, deep red color. I put it on virtually everything — steamed spinach, chicken, roasted veggies. It’s my little secret for adding great depth of flavor without extra salt or sugar.

Petite Petit By Michael David Winery This wine from Lodi, California, is just amazing; there’s no other word for it. Nopa in San Francisco One of my favorite restaurants of all time. I love the open-air kitchen, the “urban rustic” food, the wine, the casual ambiance. For me, it’s the perfect storm. Seared duck breast, white beans and roasted Bronx grapes, $26, Nopa, San Francisco, 415-864-8643, nopasf.com

Chili Passion Martini I’ve never had an exotic cocktail like this one. At the Setai hotel in Miami Beach, the bartender, O’Neil Hyman, makes his own fruit-infused vodkas and rums. Ponzi’s Pinot Noir Dick and Maria Ponzi are dear friends of ours, and they also happen to be master winemakers. We are seeing people want a lighter, brighter look to their home.” Marble continues to be extremely popular for countertops, flooring, backsplashes and shower surrounds. Another way to create a lighter look is by mixing glass and porcelain tiles. Also consider the optical illusions: not only do lighter colors make the bathroom look crisper and cleaner, they can also help the space appear roomier and more open.

Let It Soak

There’s no denying the pampering trend in bathrooms, especially the master bath, says Renée LeJeune Hallberg, principal of RLH Studio: “We are all so much busier, and so in the moments that we have first thing in the morning or just before we go to bed, we want a little bit more luxury. It’s just so appealing.” And Jacuzzi jets just aren’t enough. Cast-iron tubs have gone the way of the dinosaur, as have the cookie-cutter built-ins that were so prevalent in the ’90s. Homeowners are opting for freestanding soaking tubs made of lighter materials such as wood or limestone resin. Many of the soaking tubs hold a large volume of water and come with heated coils to enhance the spa experience.

home || bathroom trends Light the Way

When it comes to lighting, it’s finally the bathroom’s time to shine. Gone are the days of the single fixture protruding from the middle of the ceiling. While task lighting is still important, there’s also an emphasis on decorative fixtures such as elegant chandeliers and striking sconces. “We are seeing much more mood-type lighting versus function,” says Rauscher. “We are doing a lot of toe-kick lighting, soffit lighting, recessed lights and lighting within cabinetry.”

Shower Power

Designers are poring over the shower area. Think bigger and better. Not only are showers gaining in size, but many house steam options and come with multiple heads for the ultimate in relaxation. “Pretty much, people are doing two showerheads all the time. What used to be a luxury is almost becoming the norm,” says Rauscher. “We are also doing a lot more detail in the shower with shampoo niches and shelves that are built into the wall versus just soap dishes.”

Fabulous Furniture

One of the best ways to personalize the bathroom is to design custom furniture pieces in place of traditional cabinetry. Countless furniture manufacturers are creating unique vanities by giving them feet, offering endless options for color and finish and providing better hardware. “It’s really just prettier. It doesn’t look like any old cabinet. It has a much more refined, graceful look,” says Hallberg, who recently wowed clients by designing a charming vanity with an inlaid antique mirror and sparkly knobs. “It really gives the room personality.” FANTASIA SHOWROOMS: ARTISTIC TILE, MARMARA

Splitsville

Today’s bathrooms are becoming more compartmentalized. Double sinks just don’t cut it anymore. Designers are separating vanities and creating alcoves or individual rooms for tubs and showers. It’s not uncommon to have “his and hers” vanities that are on opposite sides of the master bath. Individual makeup vanities are also a hallmark of high-end bathrooms.

Tile Style

Three IMS show rooms help create custom looks. Designers have hit the wall — decorating entire spaces with unique tiles. In many bathrooms, tile has replaced wallpaper and paint, and the options are truly endless. “It looks more like a wall covering,” attests Pam Gilbert, USON Design Solutions Sales Manager. “The idea is rather than having a border or a deco, the pattern is on all of the walls and is more consistent. I just think it’s new and fresh. It becomes more about the whole wall than just an accent.” The standard 4-inch-by-4-inch tiles are still around, but homeowners can now opt for completely innovative shapes and sizes. “It used to be that there were rules: small room, small squares. That’s obsolete. Larger tiles in a small room make the room look even larger,” says Deanna Carlson, Show Room Manager of Ceramic Tileworks. There’s even a tile that can be ultra-thin or ultra-thick, known as Kalesinterflex. Measuring as little as 3 millimeters, the slim tile is available in gigantic sheets that can cover existing floor or wall materials. “It has the ability to flex so it can be used on curved walls,” explains USON Design Solutions Managing Partner Cem Onbasi. “The large sheets can be used to cover shower walls, which means minimal grout joints. The thicker tiles are ideal for furniture or countertop applications.” Modern-day mosaics can also be designed to personal taste. Homeowners are welcome to submit artwork or choose from distinct colors and patterns. According to Jesse Diamond, Marketing Manager of Fantasia, “Tiles are more design- and art-driven. They are based on textiles, fabric and even art movements. They’re just a lot cooler. You can express your own taste through tile a lot more than you used to.” If you like the look of stone or wood but not the price tag, you can take advantage of new, cutting-edge technology: instead of using rolling screens to create patterns, manufacturers are relying on advanced digital printing technology. The result is HD tile with more depth, beautiful shading and fewer repeats in pattern.

Practically Decadent Sensible interior designer Martha O’Hara reveals a bit of her wild side. |

BY ALYSSA FORD

“It’s actually quite sensible if you think about it. If you go from 3,000 finished square feet to 4,000 finished square feet of living space, it does wonders for your resale value.” — MARTHA O’HARA

M

artha O’Hara is one of those eminently practical women. She’s an interior designer but also an MBA, one of those rare souls who maybe loves a beautifully designed business even more than she loves a beautifully designed room. She’s a fashionista, to be sure — you’ll never catch the 5-foot-2inch interior designer without a full splay of gold jewelry and a pair of staggeringly high heels — but she’s the kind of fashionista who buys classic, time-honored labels at end-of-season sales. There’s not a garment in O’Hara’s closet with the tags still on (she wears and curates all her clothes), and her sharply cut Escada jackets are never, ever tossed on the floor. O’Hara is so practical and businesslike that it caught her friends by surprise last autumn when the designer ever-so-casually mentioned that she was going to convert her crammed, dusty attic into a starlet’s dressing room with a zebra-print rug and a carved tête-à-tête in cotton-candy pink. (Pink!) “We were like ‘Wow, go, Martha!’” says Jill Murphy, a friend and the director of sales at Martha’s firm, Martha O’Hara Interiors, in St. Louis Park. The new dressing room, fit for the most regal of prima donnas, is even more the surprise because it hides at the top of a very formal, very non-girly residence designed by architect Ernest Kennedy, who took his training at Sorbonne and lavished his homes with formal entryways and Colonialstyle moldings. The buttoned-up O’Hara home opens up with a grand, rotunda-shaped foyer with vaguely Moroccan detailing and then continues on room after room with tastefully selected — if very neutral — furniture. But at the top of the wooden stairs is Martha’s private enclave, and she’s run absolutely wild, from the fuchsia-cushioned window seat (for flipping

95 Artful Living

through the latest issue of Vogue, of course), to the ceiling-height dressing mirror framed in stamped aluminum. Along the walls are glazed and painted cabinets with narrow shelves for sexy heels and cabinets with seeded glass fronts for sweaters. The crown jewel is the richly carved and white-lacquered tête-à-tête robed in blushing velvet-blend and placed on a zebra-patterned, tufted wool rug. She may have a sublime dressing room, but don’t count on O’Hara squealing with diva-ish delight, the way other (mere mortal) women might, especially when being photographed for this story. She’s still a businesswoman. Just maybe a more complex businesswoman. “It’s actually quite sensible, if you think about,” says O’Hara, flocked by pampering photo stylists, with the cameras flashing. “If you go from 3,000 finished square feet to 4,000 finished square feet of living space, it does wonders for your resale value.”

A lodge-inspired Orono home, exemplifies chic yet comfortable lake living, | BY CAROLYN CROOKE

A

sk most people what they love most about their home, and they’ll point out a view or a treasured room. But for the owner of one Orono residence, it’s how passionately her large extended family has embraced the place: “It’s a wonderful multigenerational gathering space, and that has been so nice for us — and for our grown children, spouses and friends. Everybody loves to be here, and there’s a perfect space for each one of them, from little kids to older adults.” She’s certain she and her husband’s family and friends wouldn’t have had so much fun together — or even spent so much time together over the past few years — if it weren’t for the unusual allure of this elegant, majestic, lodge-inspired home on Lake Minnetonka.

home || real estate

“Jim McNeal is just a fabulous architect,” the homeowner attests. “He had so many ideas that we’re grateful for. We love everything about this place. We wouldn’t change a thing.”

“It’s incredible to be here with our favorite people, to celebrate holidays and birthdays. When it’s snowing outside, it’s just magical.” It’s magical in the summer, too, especially for boaters and swimmers. Situated on prestigious Crystal Bay, the home has a rare sandy beach, and thanks to the depth of the bay, it’s not weedy like other parts of the lake. And while the bay itself is quiet and peaceful, there’s easy access to the popular, high traffic areas of the lake. It was this rare frontage itself that sold the couple on the property. “We walked straight past the home that was here and headed right to the large, flat backyard with its sandy shore and fell in love with it.” After working on ideas for a massive remodel of the 1960s-era bungalow, they decided to tear it down and create what they truly wanted. Completed in 2007, the home has a timeless quality reminiscent of the posh Rocky Mountain lodges that inspired it. Architect Jim McNeal of De Novo worked closely with the homeowners to come up with the plans for a home that would feel spacious and cozy all at the same time, with a dramatic connection to the outdoors — virtually every room has a gorgeous lake view. Built by Pete Boyer Construction, the residence is a symphony of arches hewn of fir and natural stone. Rooms flow into each other, and alder cabinetry adds incredible warmth. “I wanted something that could stand on its own, without furniture,” the homeowner notes. The roughly 6,000-square-foot home has four bathrooms and three bedrooms, though the office is often used as a fourth bedroom, and the handsome, cozy theater room is a favorite sleepover area for nieces and nephews. Geothermal heating and cooling means ultra-comfortable energy bills and almost none of the dust associated with forced air. Smart touches abound, such as the roomy downstairs bathroom (perfect for kids coming in right from the lake). Upstairs, a screened-in porch overlooks the lagoon — complete with a fountain — that borders the north side of the property; it’s perfect for morning coffee with the sunrise. A master bedroom is separate enough from other spaces to create a sense of sanctuary. The unique north-woods flavor here is surprising, considering it’s only 20 minutes from downtown Minneapolis. “Jim McNeal is just a fabulous architect,” the homeowner attests. “He had so many ideas that we’re grateful for. We love everything about this place. We wouldn’t change a thing.”

The couple wanted a kitchen that “wouldn’t feel like a kitchen.” The design team achieved the effect with low, furniture-like cabinetry and by using soffits and arches to create a seamless connection to the other spaces, as well as to the lake outside.

A fresh fruit juice will give you just the burst of energy you need to sail through the rest of your day without giving a second thought to something that melts in your mouth and not in your hand! Luxury Accommodations Travel guru Rudy Maxa checks into The Peninsula Chicago.

W

hen I traveled with my parents as a boy, we rarely stayed in hotels; my father, the Colonel, was adept at finding Army colleagues all over the world with guest bedrooms. The few times we pulled into a Howard Johnson’s “motor lodge,” I couldn’t have been more thrilled if the Queen of England had invited me to overnight at Buckingham Palace. Maybe that’s why I grew up to love hotels. Denied them as a child, I became fascinated by a business that never closes its doors and is staffed by a retinue of polite men and women dedicated to bringing you cheeseburgers any time of the day or night. The memory of Mr. Johnson’s iconic orange roofs began to fade years ago when I started the search for the perfect hotel. That quest began in earnest in the 1980s when the editor of GQ asked me to write

a series of articles on the world’s great hotels. First assignment: The Peninsula in Hong Kong, where the storied, luxury hotel company is based. A landmark in the city with a lobby restaurant that’s long been a gathering spot for local power brokers, The Peninsula Hong Kong was (and still is) a majestic, colonial-style hotel with impeccable rooms and service. Staying there was a revelation. After clearing customs at Kai Tak airport, I was whisked into a car from the hotel’s fleet of emeraldgreen Rolls-Royces. When I stepped off the elevator on my floor, a staffer was already holding my guest-room door open. Moments later, a butler arrived to unpack my bags, serve tea and offer a choice of designer-label soaps from a big basket. I chose Hermès. With that memory, I approached a recent stay at The Peninsula Chicago with great expectations.

Artful Living | Spring 2011 128

Here’s how a great hotel should make you feel: safe, cosseted, appreciated and spoiled. A great hotel should take you out of your day-to-day life and make you feel more prosperous, more cultured and maybe even more glamorous than you really are. Stepping into Chicago’s Peninsula delivers on all those counts. A personable bellman appeared the moment I arrived (in my own car, which is not a RollsRoyce) at the hotel’s entrance, just around the corner from Michigan Avenue and Chicago’s Magnificent Mile. An elevator at the ground-floor foyer took me to a Versailles-like, fifth-floor lobby where acres of gold-hued marble floors gleamed with reflected light from huge, two-story windows that allow sunlight to flood a vast, carpeted, casual dining area to the right as one enters. It’s the Chicago equivalent of that gathering spot in The Peninsula Hong Kong. Straight ahead is a concierge desk, and reception is to the left. You may be excused if you expect Louis XIV and his court to sweep in at any moment. This is The Peninsula’s third outpost in America; hotels in Los Angeles and Manhattan preceded the 2001 opening of The Peninsula Chicago. The hotel is a modern, 20 story building that boasts 339 rooms, a well-equipped workout facility and ESPA spa, a not-to-be-missed Chinese restaurant (Shanghai Terrace), an unusually comfortable, formal dining room (Avenues) that was recently awarded two Michelin stars under chef Curtis Duffy and — tucked in the corner of the ground floor with a separate entrance — a combo bistro and patisserie (Pierrot Gourmet). One of the most striking amenities of the hotel is its pool, a gorgeous, 82foot, indoor, heated pool with lots of natural light and an outdoor sun deck overlooking Chicago. Even if you don’t intend to swim, the pool area has comfy chaise lounges where guests can relax. Hotel-room design is one of my small obsessions. Bathrooms with insufficient horizontal space make me crazy. Weak water pressure in the shower makes me cranky. A lack of hooks for pajamas makes me wonder whether anyone thought about how a bathroom is really used. Dim lights bedside frustrate me and, I presume, anyone else who likes to read in bed. Also infuriating: a single luggage rack for two people, clothes hangers with tricky tops meant to prevent guests from stealing them and air-conditioning/heating units that blow on your face when you sleep. I could go on. Happily, The Peninsula Chicago knows what it’s doing. Calm, soothing earth tones mark the décor of guest rooms and suites. Cabinetry is custom made. There’s a dedicated reading light at each side of the king bed. Toiletries are Molton Brown. An entire, carpeted bench provides space for opening two, fullsize suitcases without having to put either on the floor. Very nice. I once asked the legendary former Four Seasons general manager Stan Bromley what he looks for the moment he enters a hotel. Without hesitation, he answered, “Teeth and eyes.” Every housekeeper, doorman and desk clerk at The Peninsula Chicago smiled and greeted me eye-to-eye during my three-night visit. From housekeepers passed in the hallway to a concierge who pointed me to a small Italian restaurant I’d never heard of for lunch, this is a staff well trained in the art of hotel service. “A seamless experience,” said the hotel’s general manager since 2002, Maria Zec, when I asked her what she thinks makes a great hotel. “You want your stay to be comfortable and pleasant … without being hassled. I want to be able to

Other Fashionable Places to Stay Chicago is blessed with a number of top-flight luxury hotels. Among them: Chicago’s Trump International Hotel & Towers is a gleaming high-rise overlooking the Chicago River just off Michigan Avenue whose modest entrance leads to a sexy bar and restaurant. Its rooms are sophisticated, and a wrap-around health club provides world-beating views of the great architecture that lines the river. trumpchicagohotel.com Not far from the Chicago Water Tower, the Elysian’s courtyard resembles that of a European manor. Oversized guest rooms (at 890 square feet) with fireplaces deliver on the promise of tranquility that the marbled lobby suggests. With a lap pool attached to the spa, this is a lovely enclave with a unique feature: tipping is not permitted. elysianhotels.com The Park Hyatt Chicago has stood as a paragon of luxury on Michigan Avenue for years. There’s a comfortable lobby library, a restaurant that thrusts from the hotel’s façade to provide diners with avenue views and a three-lane lap pool with floorto-ceiling windows. hyatt.com Both the Four Seasons Hotel Chicago and the Ritz-Carlton Chicago are managed by Four Seasons, and there are some similarities: the lobbies for both are on the upper floors of modern high-rises, both have public areas lavishly finished with marble and statuary and both have multistory shopping just a few (indoor) steps away. You can’t go wrong checking into either. fourseasons.com/ chicagofs, fourseasons.com/chicagorc Traveling on a budget? I’ve enjoyed stays at Affinia Chicago, a short walk from Michigan Avenue but still in the center of the downtown action on East Superior Street. It features amenities you’d expect to find at pricier palaces. affinia.com

spotlight || travel kick back, relax and enjoy myself. If I’m there on business, I want to be able to get in, get out and get my work done with no hotel problems.” There are two kinds of hotel general managers: those who spend most of their day in an office reading spreadsheets and those who walk the hotel talking to staff and guests. I prefer the latter, and Zec is in that category. Every day, she, along with her director of engineering and housekeeping, inspects a handful of rooms. Once a week, they walk through the public areas of the hotel as well as the back of the house. Zec checks in and stays at the hotel three or four times a year. Each morning, she and her senior staff meet to discuss any problems from the day before and to review the needs of incoming VIPs and groups. And every week, she sits down for a roundtable, off-the-record discussion

with a dozen or so line employees to hear their issues and suggestions. That kind of attention to detail shows at The Peninsula, where good things follow when management and employees share a goal. “If the staff is happy, the guests are going to be happy,” says Zec, who is proud the hotel has never laid off an employee despite a downturn in business following Sept. 11, 2001, and the recent recession. She thinks creativity is another ingredient that makes a hotel special. The inventive cuisine that garnered Avenues two Michelin stars as well as an afternoon tea and a weekend chocolate bar in the lobby restaurant make the hotel a destination for locals as well as guests. In the 1950s, Howard Deering Johnson brought predictable lodging to Americans with his motor lodges. The industry evolved dramatically (the Howard Johnson brand is now owned by Wyndham), and in the past several decades, Asian hotels companies such as The Peninsula group have raised the bar for luxury hostelries worldwide. The Peninsula Chicago, with what one of its staffers calls its “Midwestern hospitality with Far Eastern graciousness,” saves us from having to cross an ocean to experience the happy result.

Author, playwright, screenwriter, essayist and the host of National Public Radio’s Wait Wait...Don’t Tell Me! “I love Chicago for what it has, and what it lacks. Most people who live here or visit know what it has: all the amenities of a world-class city, such as our theater (Steppenwolf, the Goodman, the House Theatre, Lookingglass), our restaurants and chefs (Rick Bayless, Grant Achatz, Charlie Trotter, Paul Kahan, et al.), our museums, galleries, designers, architecture, universities and festivals. We also have a superb public radio station, aggressive and lively local media (still a two-newspaper town!) and two Major League baseball teams, one of which has won a World Series in the past century. But what we lack is status, and those who hunger for it. Here we are, in the middle of the country, watching the rich and famous and powerful fly hither and yon far above our heads, en route from one coast to the other. Our gossip columnists are the unhappiest people in the city as our celebrities are paltry and unimpressive — the fact that I count as one here is all the evidence you need — and even our billionaires know better than to put on airs. This is Chicago, always and still a workingclass city, where we actually make stuff and expect you to do something useful if you want to stick around. This means that with very few exceptions, all of the wonderful things mentioned above are accessible to everyone. You can get a reservation at the hottest restaurant in town or a ticket to the best show if you wait in line like a normal person. You will never in Chicago see a bunch of limos pulled up in front of a club, with paparazzi everywhere, as people far more attractive and rich than you are ushered inside. Well, maybe once or twice, but we’re laughing at them. This is Chicago, and there’s a much better place down the street with great tacos, 10 beers on tap and the game on. We’ll be down there.”

Taste and the City Take a bite out of some of Chicago’s hottest dining gems. |

Arami

Alinea

L

ast fall, Chicago became the fourth American city whose restaurants were awarded stars by the famed Michelin ratings guide. That was pretty nice. Then again, this is a city where, when our beloved Bears play the Packers in subzero temps on the blustery, snowy lakefront, some of us don’t even wear T-shirts. It’s safe to say we’re not a sensitive lot waiting for validation from European food critics. Still, the honor did confirm what happened over the past decade: once the steakhouse capital of America, Chicago transformed into a world-class dining destination. That evolution began with one man, Charlie Trotter, and his eponymous Lincoln Park restaurant (two Michelin stars). You’ve probably also heard about his heir apparent, Grant Achatz, and his modern, progressive Alinea (three stars) around the corner. But our revolution wasn’t built on the backs of only these two. Top Chef Masters champion Rick Bayless and his Frontera Grill restaurant are certainly not secrets, but his fast-casual torta shop Xoco (pronounced “show-ko”) is still pretty new. Cacao beans are roasted daily here to create a bright, fruity, slightly acidic cup of hot chocolate, likely the freshest and best example of the form you’ve ever had. Pair that with a sustainable, seven-hour wood-fired pork pibil sandwich and a freshly fried churro, and you’ve got a stellar lunch. In the shadow of Bayless’s fame, chef Danny Grant practically doesn’t even exist. But while most chefs are struggling to run one restaurant well, Grant oversees two of the city’s best: Ria and Balsan, both located in the swank Elysian hotel. These eateries share Chicago’s newest wine star, sommelier Daniel Pilkey, a guy who’s comfortable discussing vintage Bordeaux while surfing. While Ria trades in luxury (think lobster with chestnut sabayon, fennel and orange), Balsan is a

comfort-food palace, serving up crispy duck confit with mustard and ham-larded lentils. If you want to lighten it up, Arami, located on a gritty stretch of Chicago Avenue, is one of the best omakase sushi restaurants in the Midwest. Chef B.K. Park’s attention to detail is legendary: we’ve seen him walk away from his station and come back a few minutes later to notice someone touched his knife. If you’d like to save a few ducats and sample one of Chicago’s most unique Latin offerings, there’s no better spot than Cemitas Puebla for a quick taco arabe (roasted chipotle–sauced spit-roasted pork) and a Cemita Atomica — a fresh-baked sesame loaf studded with three kinds of pork and oozy artisan-made cheese imported from Mexico. The place is casual enough that it’ll never make the Michelin guide, but after a few bites, your stomach will definitely recommend a four-star award.

Private Passage A vintage mahogany yacht, the Lady Grebe offers exclusive tours on Chicago’s waterways. | BY IVY GRACIE

T

here’s nothing like seeing Chicago from the water. A meander along the multidirectional Chicago River gives fresh perspective to longstanding landmarks, like an unobstructed view from below of Willis Tower or a wide pan across the sprawling backside of the Merchandise Mart. And a leisurely cruise on Lake Michigan’s expanse is the best way to take in the city’s panoramic, glistening skyline. Public tour boats carry thousands of passengers along these routes daily, calling out

the city’s architectural treasures or opening up the throttle along the lakefront. But taking a public tour might not work for everyone. Or every occasion. Sometimes privacy is the priority. For those times, the Lady Grebe offers as much style as it does seclusion. Accommodating just six passengers, the 48foot Lady Grebe is designed for those who seek an intimate, private experience. It’s the smallest boat in a fleet of four owned by Chicago’s First Lady, a tour operator whose watercraft cruise Chicago’s waterways offering private parties,

weddings, corporate events and architectural tours led by docents from the Chicago Architecture Foundation. “For our fleet, to carry only six passengers is very small,” notes Holly Agra, president and owner of the company. “Next to that, our smallest boat carries 110 people.” But the addition of the Lady Grebe in 2005 gave the company the opportunity to serve a different kind of clientele. “It’s very small, unique, private and exclusive,” Agra says, adding that the yacht has hosted an impressive roster of A-list celebrities and high-level players in the private and public sectors. “We have celebrities who are so high visibility they can’t go on a tour with 100 other people.” And while Agra is tight-lipped about her Hollywood passengers, she will drop the King and Queen of Norway’s names as two of the many who have come aboard the vessel. “They were guests of local residents, here on an unofficial

visit,” she recounts. “It was a highlight of our career.” Such an elite clientele calls for extraordinary accoutrements, and the Lady Grebe delivers. Built in 1961, its craftsmanship is a study in understated elegance. “It’s all mahogany with art deco stainless-steel trim,” Agra says. “There’s an open-air back deck with wicker furniture, cocktail tables and a small bar. And you can step out onto the bow, which has a bench seat and is very private.” The boat also features an indoor salon, cabins, a galley and a head. And as for services, whatever can be dreamt up can most likely be arranged. Whether it’s a marriage proposal or a corporate planning session, Agra says the Lady Grebe is ready to accommodate. “Every request is customized, and we’re able to fulfill most of them, generally within 24 to 48 hours.” Basic service begins at $1,550 for a 2-hour cocktail cruise attended by a captain and first mate; an additional $350 will procure a docent from the Chicago Architecture Foundation for a private riverfront architectural tour. Picnic baskets or full-service catering can be arranged for an additional cost, or passengers may arrange for their own food service. Despite its price, a Lady Grebe experience is far from pretentious. According to Agra, it’s the privacy that’s the premium. “It’s not really meant for dressy affairs,” she clarifies. “You can wear tennis shoes and shorts. It’s casual, exclusively private touring.” And after a few hours of private passage around Chicago, guests come away with a different perspective, maybe on more than just the city. “Everyone’s really pleased when they get off the boat, “Agra says. “They love the experience.”

Some Face Time Two down-to-earth doctors rejuvenate the Twin Cities cosmetic skin-care scene. | BY ELIZABETH DEHN

T

hey started with five clients and a $400 marketing budget, but in just six years husband-and-wife duo Mark and Elizabeth Hagberg have grown Skin Rejuvenation Clinic into the darling of cosmetic care in the Twin Cities. “When our first laser was delivered, we didn’t even have an office yet,” says Elizabeth. “So we plugged it into the dryer socket and took turns practicing on each other.” The couple, both University of Minnesota– trained physicians, began their careers in family practice until Mark moved into emergency medicine and Elizabeth decided to stay home to tend to their three young children. Soon after, she received her first Botox injection — and an introduction to the cosmetic-enhancements industry. “I was hooked,” says Elizabeth. She formalized her fascination in 2005 when the Hagbergs opened Skin Rejuvenation Clinic at the Southdale Medical Center in Edina. They didn’t know how they were going to fill their schedule or their patient rooms, but strong ties to the community, rapid word-of-mouth referrals and a reputation for top-notch service and customer care quickly led to success. Unlike other cosmetic clinics, Skin

Rejuvenation doesn’t offer plastic surgery or treat skin disorders, which frees up the doctors to focus on their patients. You won’t wait two months for an appointment, and you won’t receive Botox from a nurse. In fact, the Hagbergs are dedicated to administering all injectibles and laser treatments themselves. Their hands-on approach and attention to detail is evident in patients’ flawless before and after photos, particularly with ProLipo. One of the clinic’s most cutting-edge treatments, this minimally invasive, laser-

assisted liposuction is done while patients are awake, allowing Mark to make adjustments along the way and optimize results. Today, Skin Rejuvenation Clinic is a multimillion-dollar business with thousands of youthfully glowing patients. The practice has literally outgrown its space, prompting the Hagbergs to start looking for a larger location. But they have no plans of leaving Edina or the community that’s helped them make looking good look so easy. For more information, visit skinrejuvenationclinic.net.

Old Stone, New Tricks Earthscape Stoneworks relies on the past and the present to create natural wonders. | BY LORI STORM

S

hane Schaaf sees every project as a work of art. As the owner and lead designer of Earthscape Stoneworks + Design, he does everything from full landscape design and stone masonry to building unique grottos, archways and fireplaces. His motto is “nothing is impossible,” and he is always searching for ways to fuel his creativity. “I never want to replicate a project that I’ve already done. If someone insists on having me build something they have already seen before, I tell them, ‘Let’s give you something even better than that,’ ” Schaaf insists. Earthscape Stoneworks is known for including an element of surprise — from secret drawers to hidden details — in all of its exterior and interior designs. Imagine highlighting amethyst geodes or other semiprecious stones in a retaining wall or fireplace. These brilliant gems are available in a multitude of varieties, colors, shapes and sizes, making the options endless. And Schaaf makes these projects shine by incorporating lighting into the masonry. “It’s mysterious and unexpected to see an illuminated stone,” Schaaf says. “It’s something you see in the movies, but this can also be done in your own backyard.” Another way to personalize a piece is to display stones from your own collection, perhaps that crystal quartz, volcanic rock or agate you stumbled upon during your travels. Schaaf has even incorporated fossilized fish and other interesting objects into his masonry to create dynamic designs. “Semiprecious stones or whatever stone is precious to you — once you see it mixed with other materials, especially lighting, you will be captivated by the stone,” he says. Taking advantage of reclaimed materials is another popular trend in landscape design. Old World stone and clay brick pavers from roads are transformed into charming patios and paths. Schaaf also uses architectural stone, pieces that were originally hand cut or carved for a specific purpose such as a building or bridge. One of the best sources of reclaimed materials is your own backyard. Using stone from dilapidated landscape features can keep a project more affordable rather than starting from scratch.

Though the creative use of stone forms the foundation of his design philosophy, Schaaf is not afraid to play with elements of metal, glass and wood. “I like the idea of applying techniques commonly used in stonework to manipulate other materials for fresh designs,” says Schaaf. This includes stackable and modular planter designs and vertical garden panels. By using reclaimed “Semiprecious stones or whatever wood stacked in stone is precious to you — once you countless ways, see it mixed with other materials, he carefully brings gates and especially lighting, you will be fence panels to captivated by the stone.”— SHANE SCHAAF life. Schaaf also uses stained glass to create special areas of interest to break up walls of stonework. No matter what the material, Schaaf sees every job as an opportunity and doesn’t shy away from even the most basic projects. “Regardless of the size and budget, I never stray from good craftsmanship,” he says. From designing a rooftop garden five stories up to transforming a dreary basement, Schaaf’s work is individualized, and ideas are based on client input. Potential clients can share their ideas and desires during a free consultation with Earthscape Stoneworks + Design. Cabin Living Transformed The past meets the present at Trapper’s Landing Lodge. |

B

efore long, the words “up north” and “cabin” will creep back into everyday conversation. It’s only a matter of time before the summer ritual of heading to the lake becomes a reality. For many, it’s a return to the tired, outdated cabin that’s not exactly “home sweet home.” But what if you could experience the best of cabin living with luxury accommodations? You’ll find that getaway at Trapper’s Landing Lodge on Leech Lake, just a few hours northwest of the Twin Cities. The vacation destination opened in 2007 with the option to buy or rent homes year-round. Trapper’s Landing is one of four family resorts developed and managed by Odyssey Companies. “I don’t think people of our generation have any interest in going up to a 35- or 45-year-old cabin with linoleum floors, leaks and just one bathroom,” says Bob Ryan, owner of Odyssey Development and Managing Partner of Trapper’s Landing. “The key here is luxury accommodations, but you also get the older, northern Minnesota experience. That’s the bull’s-eye that people are looking for.”

BY LORI STORM

Old-Fashioned Fun

Remember the days of eating breakfast in your bathing suit? You couldn’t wait to get out the door and dive into the water. Those days are back. Lake living at Trapper’s Landing means a myriad of outdoor activities and an endless supply of s’mores. (Yes, free s’mores!) You can rent boats and Jet Skis or take advantage of guided fishing tours on Minnesota’s fourth largest lake. The 51-slip marina is the meeting place for complimentary tubing and water-skiing. Vacationers can also check out paddleboats, kayaks, canoes and bikes at no cost. There’s a sandy swimming beach and even a sauna for a quick warm-up. One of the most popular hangouts happens to be the pool, which features a snack bar. Pampering is also part of the package. Guests can sign up for a soothing massage or just lie idle by the shore. And get this: there’s a free, three-hour kids’ camp where little ones can enjoy face painting, arts and crafts and games. “Kids roam here. We want fun, and we want a lot of it,” says Shelly Jones, General Manager and Real Estate Sales Coordinator at Trapper’s

Landing. She points out that many kids make friends at the resort, and, as a result, many families start coordinating their vacations up north. Not in the mood to cook? The Beach Fire Bar and Grille serves up everything from venison pot stickers and walleye cakes to pasta and steak. The restaurant is housed in the historic log lodge and boasts beautiful views of the lake, complete with a bar and game room downstairs for additional entertainment.

The Great Outdoors Meets the Great Indoors

Stone fireplaces, exposed wood, screened porches — all of the units proudly celebrate cabin living and reflect the long tradition of hunting and fishing in northern Minnesota. But don’t be fooled by the canoe paddles resting against the wall and other rustic accents. The three-bedroom Lakeside Townhomes sleep nine and offer amazing amenities. The spacious units feature a gourmet kitchen and island, along with a dining area for eight. The focal point of the great room is a commanding stone fireplace. The room caters to every

147 Artful Living

| Spring 2011

entertainment need with a flat-screen TV, satellite service, a DVD player and a stereo. You can also stay connected with free Wi-Fi service throughout the cabin. The master bedroom and bath comes with a relaxing steam shower. The master suite, complete with a whirlpool tub, shares the second floor with a cozy guest room. “I think it’s the level of design and detail that go into these units that make the difference. The little things like the coffee sign or the steel bird — those are the things that make it very homey. They go beyond any other lodging facility I can think of,” says Barbara Swenson, Marketing Director at Trapper’s Landing.

Buy Your Dream

Trapper’s Landing offers affordable options for owning your luxury vacation home. Buyers can decide on whole ownership or opt for fractional ownership. With fractional ownership, you own the home for certain weeks out of the year. But unlike time-shares, buyers actually own a piece of property at Trapper’s Landing. It’s a realestate transaction.

“To buy a whole place up here is going to cost you $500,000 or more. A lot of people say, ‘Geez, I can get that same luxury for a fraction of the price and I don’t plan on using [the cabin] all the time.’ That’s the beauty of fractional: you’re tailoring your purchase to match your use,” Ryan explains. Not only are the units move-in ready, they are also maintenance free. That’s right — no weekend fix-it projects. You don’t have to worry about opening up when you arrive or closing down when you leave. Trapper’s Landing even cleans the unit from top to bottom after you hit the road. “From an ownership perspective, it’s a great thing,” Ryan insists. “You never have to worry about any maintenance or mowing the lawn. If something is wrong with the plumbing, we fix it. And of course, we clean when you leave.”

Trapper’s Landing offers an additional cost-effective benefit: it will rent out your home while you’re away. Cabins are rented in four ways: as an entire 3-bedroom unit; a 1-bedroom townhome with master bedroom and sofa sleeper; a master suite with king-size bed and bathroom; and a guest room with full bed and bunk and attached bathroom. Trapper’s Landing then divides the proceeds with the owner. Whether you rent or buy, Trapper’s Landing is all about making memories and getting back to nature. “Do you know how many people have never seen a falling star?” Ryan asks. “My kids and I have sat on the dock and seen a hundred in one night.” He goes on to say, “Growing up, I can tell you my fondest memories were going to the cabin. So what we’re trying to create here is a place where those same types of memories are possible for the next generation.”

land of 10,000 luxuries Guests at Trapper’s Landing Lodge can expect modern amenities plus plenty of activities for the entire family.

S

pring is just beginning to unthaw our state, but it’s already been a hot year for restaurateurs Kam and Keyvan Talebi of Kaskaid Hospitality. With new restaurant debuts in February and March, plus the fourth Twin Cities location of CRAVE due yet this spring, they’re on a bit of a restaurant-opening bender. First, in February, came Urban Eatery at Calhoun Beach Club, in the former View Restaurant space (also a Kaskaid property). The Talebis completely overhauled both space and menu to better appeal to Uptown neighborhood dwellers and leisure-seekers coming in off the lake. Reclaimed lumber, warm colors and glass wine barrels as light fixtures — not to mention that big, lake-facing patio — set a laidback mood. It’s nicely balanced by an affordable, family-friendly menu developed by Jim Kyndberg, chef/owner of the famed former Bayport Cookery. Kyndberg put a fresh, upscale twist on typical neighborhood café fare; think Asian pork sliders, smoked-duck nachos, brined chicken wings and more. Next, March welcomed Sopranos Italian Kitchen at the Shops

at West End in St. Louis Park. “I love that it’s serious food, but it’s casual,” says chef JP Samuelson, formerly of restaurants including Solera, D’Amico Cucina and his own jP American Bistro. Samuelson’s talking about eating out in Italy, a clear inspiration throughout the restaurant, from the energetic bar to the more intimate private dining space to the inviting kitchen. The menu represents the boot-shaped country from top to tip, attempting to please straightforward spaghetti-and-meatballs diners and foodies alike. Dishes often double as atmosphere; there’s a wood-fired grill churning out steaks and pizzas, a rotisserie slow-roasting porchetta and chicken, an antipasto bar, tablesidemade Caesars and handcrafted pastas. House wine comes in barrels tapped for single pours. “We want you to remember a lot of things about your meal, outside of fantastic food,” says Kam. Then there’s the metro area’s fourth CRAVE. It’s scheduled to open in downtown Minneapolis — complete with rooftop patio — before summer. “We’re fortunate to be in a position where we’re able to grow,” says Kam. “We’re getting pretty used to opening restaurants.”

Everything You Know About Fashion (Is Wrong) Five fashion myths debunked. |

BY ROBERT STEPHENS, FOUNDER OF GEEK SQUAD

Myth No. 1: People are born with fashion sense.

and have a point of view. So I guess in that sense, you could argue that fashion is selfHere’s the unvarnished truth about the indulgent. But the reality is, the more I know fashionable: they work at it. They read about fashion, about the way people express fashion magazines, they follow the themselves with clothes, the more external Sartorialist and the Urban Sartorialist. They I’ve become. I find myself noticing people spend their weekends in vintage shops. with new eyes: mundane office workers, Some of them even dip into YouTube to librarians, baristas. Noticing what they have learn how to put a perfect dimple in a tie. on, how they’ve arranged themselves. What When I finally I’ve discovered figured this out is that people “Fashion has made me more curious — by way of a spend a lot more and alert. And I think I’ve become a dear friend who time than you I had always would think. better listener.” — ROBERT STEPHENS thought was just There are little born with fashion touches that I sense, like attached earlobes — I was actually would have never noticed before. Fashion has overtaken with relief. Instead of raining down made me more curious and alert. And I think like manna from the heavens, his fashion I’ve become a better listener. sense came to him like any other skill worth having: practice, learning, dedication.

Myth No. 4: Following fashion trends is an act of conformity.

Myth No. 2: Fashion is fast. From an industry view, fashion is fast and as fickle as a pair of jeggings: before the spring looks are out, fashion designers are plotting for fall. But the day-to-day reality of fashion is actually — marvelously — slow. For me, it’s like shopping for heirloom beets at a Saturday farmers’ market. For two whole minutes in the morning, I’m thinking of nothing else but color, pattern, shape, fabric. Throughout the day — for maybe the first time really in my life — I’m noticing the burnish on a beautiful pair of shoes, the edge of a really killer tie clip. The fashion biz may be blowing by, but the art itself has slowed me down.

Myth No. 3: Fashion is self-indulgent. To dress well, you have to know yourself

was “of the body”. But if you see the same guys today, many of them having begun changing how they eat, what clothes they wear. I asked one programmer what that was all about, and he said it was because he felt like he had unfinished business. Because the world isn’t just of the body, or just of the mind. It’s both. And fashion — which can be so challenging — is really at the nexus of the two.

One could make an argument — a very old argument — that the necktie is the ultimate symbol of conformity. And maybe that was true back in the ’40s, but there’s so much richness in the marketplace now that the argument is pretty obsolete. There’s so much wearable art out there that you can completely crash your identity and never venture outside of a suit and tie. Remember: the bow tie isn’t just for family docs, it’s also for punk rockers.

Myth No. 5: Fashion is anti-intellectual. This was an idea Silicon Valley geeks embraced in the ’90s, when they were programming all day in T-shirts and scarfing down Doritos and Mountain Dew. They were “of the mind”, but fashion was irrelevant as it

Nina’s Style Strategy

Fashion director of Marie Claire, star judge of “Project Runway” and all-around style maven Nina Garcia gives Artful Living an inside look at the fashionable life. | BY HAYLEY DULIN

Artful Living: You were born in Colombia and lived there until moving to the United States as a teenager. What fashion influences come from your time there? Nina Garcia: Bright, bold colors [and being] confident in what you wear. Confidence is one of the best styles to have! AL: How did you get your start in the fashion industry? NG: I was an intern in the public-relations department at Perry Ellis. My first job was at Mirabella magazine, and I ultimately found myself at Elle, working my way up the ranks until I became fashion director in 2000. Then in 2008, I moved to Marie Claire, and I have been the fashion director ever since. AL: What does fashion mean to you? NG: Fashion means knowing who you are and what you love. Be confident in your clothing selections, but more importantly, have confidence in yourself. AL: Can you tell us about your experience at Fall 2011 New York Fashion Week? NG: I was just coming back from maternity leave and couldn’t wait to get back in the game! The clothes were just gorgeous; I was not disappointed. Each show gave something different: a mix of elegance, modern, fun, classic, edgy… It was phenomenal! AL: Why are people so interested lately in the behind-the-scenes looks at the fashion industry? NG: For a long time, fashion — but also film,

art and music — was a very impenetrable industry where few people (the selected ones) [were] able to witness the process of making an outfit, a painting, a song or [even] worse — to attend the show or to visit the studio where the painter was presenting his creations. Things now have changed. I don’t like to think of the Internet as a challenge as a lot of people do. For me, the Internet is a great opportunity because, for the first time in history, creators can deliver the content directly to their audience without the need of intermediaries. In other words, how great is it that people from all over the world can have a front-row seat thanks to digital streaming? How amazing is it that a designer can explain the hard work that lies behind an outfit? AL: What trends do you think we’ll see this spring? NG: Spring is very bright this year: a lot of colors! Stripes! Floral! Very feminine! What’s not to love?! AL: If you had to pick only 5 items worth splurging on, what would they be and why? NG: Jackets: You can wear [them] with and to anything. I have a few Chanel jackets that I absolutely can’t part with as they go with everything! They are classic and timeless! Black pants: Pants in general are very difficult to buy, so if you find a pair that hits you in all the right places, buy them! Handbags: A simple handbag is [a] quintessential piece in every girl’s closet. I remember buying my first Chanel handbag; I never thought about it twice because I knew it would last me forever. Camera: A great photo is just priceless — memories you can have a lifetime. A hairdresser: Great hair makes any day better! The feeling after a really nice haircut, highlights or simply just a great blowout is just incredible! AL: In your opinion, who is the person

who best embodies style? NG: My mother. My mother was her own muse. She meticulously cared for every garment of clothing in her closet, she never left the house without perfect hair and makeup, she bought garments but always altered them to make them her own and above all, she wore confidence with each outfit. AL: Where do you find inspiration for your books? NG: From the people around me: my family, my friends, my staff, my fans [and] people in passing. AL: What is it like working on “Project Runway”? What do you look for when choosing a winner? NG: [When choosing] a winner, I look for creativity, a unique point of view, consistency as well as their ability to work well with others. AL: What has been your greatest professional accomplishment to date? NG: I will answer to your question using one of my favorites lines from Pedro Almodovar’s movie All About My Mother: “You are more authentic the more you resemble what you’ve dreamed of being.” So I hope my biggest accomplishment will be to resemble what [I] dreamed of being when I was a little kid in my hometown in Colombia, Barranquilla. AL: And finally, what can we expect from you next? NG: Well, I just had my second baby, so I’m going to concentrate on my family first, and the rest, I hope, will follow. I’m sure about one thing: I will continue focusing on fashion. As always, [I’m] trying to find new ways to distribute fashion-related content. The fashion world is living a very exciting moment: [the] Internet and the new platforms are democratizing fashion while reaching a new, younger and very creative audience. I want to be part of this movement.

Getting Your Groove Back

One woman loses — and finds — herself through fashion. |

I

n 1966, when I was 12, my family moved to a new town. What a nightmare! Should any prepubescent child have to live with the anguish of finding acceptance and respect in junior high? I was not at my best and needed to find a way to be seen. Fashion proved to be my muse. My parents knew the “not-at-my-best” part. One evening, I threw a preteen tantrum in front of K&D Bootery in Spencer, Iowa. I had to have white go-go boots. Dancers were wearing them on Shindig!, Steve McQueen’s wife had a pair, Twiggy wore them and I had to have them, too. My beleaguered parents stood there, immobilized by their tyrant of a daughter, gave in and bought me the boots. The following Saturday I began to sew a jumper I’d seen in a catalog. I adapted a pattern so it would look exactly like the catalog version and began to stitch the pieces together in the basement of our tiny ranch home. I begrudged having to surface for meals. On Sunday, while I was still laboring away, a thunderstorm ripped through the town, and we lost electricity. Oh, nature’s timing is so harsh! I lit a candle and patiently turned the wheel of the sewing machine by hand, stitch by stitch, applying the navyblue binding that decorated the deep U-shaped neckline of the white wool jumper. I wore this outfit on Monday with my new go-go boots and felt like I had modestly redefined who I was in seventh grade out here on the prairie, which gave my delicate confidence a boost. In my twenties, I worked as a costume designer for the theater. In this context, I realized the strength of fashion’s voice. The curtain is pulled and the costumes begin to communicate who the characters are, all without a word. Offstage, we introduce ourselves to the world through fashion, our costume. We hide behind it, and we seduce with it. It can be a kind of armor, protecting us. It reveals our status and our confidence. Often, it is a collective shout — remember the ’60s? My enthusiasm for fashion is, admittedly, a shallow quality, but also a lifelong passion. I have discovered more recently that my relationship with fashion fundamentally mimics my relationship with myself and, believe it or not, it can be a stand-in for a good therapist. When Lee, my husband, moved to Los Angeles almost seven years ago to go to graduate school and teach, I traveled there monthly to spend time with him. I was in my early fifties at the time and learned

in short order that I was not an L.A. kind of gal, and it almost undid me. I wasn’t blonde. I didn’t have my blowout every morning. I didn’t wear a rock the size of Gibraltar on my ring finger nor had I had any work done (if you know what I mean — wink wink). I didn’t wear aqua, coral and white, and I didn’t place the back of my thong strap just above the top of my skirt for all the people standing in line at Peet’s to see. At this time of life, my children had pirated my fashion budget in the form of school tuition. How many years did I wear Gap jeans, a black J. Crew perfect-fit tee and brown Frye boots (for dressing up) or Dansko clogs (for every day)? At one point, I owned eight black J. Crew long-sleeved T-shirts. The only cool thing in my wardrobe was a 5-year-old Prada bag, a gift from a client with taste. I actually had some kind of cosmic meltdown one afternoon, sobbing at how out of place I felt. I didn’t know how to dress in L.A. I tried the bleached jeans, the orange sandals, a choker necklace from the shop on Montana Avenue and looked like I was choking. I bought tie-dye on Main Street in Venice Beach. Who was I kidding? I never, ever learned to do L.A. I had to confront a gaping insecurity. My husband (who I impartially think is quite cute) was working with Jim Morrison’s “L.A. women,” some form of the sex kitten, and I couldn’t compete. Bottom line: it wasn’t my style. So, instead, and with much ado, I made L.A. wrong. Who’d want to live in that cultural desert, anyway? Two years ago, Lee took a job in New York. I thought, Oh, here we go again. But, I quickly learned that if you just wear black, no one will notice. Of course, in New York, no one will notice you much anyway. That’s the great thing, however: there is remarkable sartorial freedom — you get to write your script and design your own costume. There are so many remarkable people and styles in an international city like New York; you can be whoever you want to be. In New York, I wear things I would never wear anywhere else just because I can play with who I want to be next. Sometimes I return from a day in the city, pass the mirror in our apartment and wonder, What was I thinking wearing a miniskirt at 57 years old?! On another day, I try the John Lennon Beatles hat and the strappy shoes with an old pair of jeans, and it works! I feel, once again, like I did in my new jumper and go-go boots at 12 years old: a little more confident, a little more comfortable in my own skin. Like I got my mojo back. Take that, L.A.
