FROM THE EDITORS Kate Nelson: In 2022, the kitchen remains one of the few sacred places where we can truly feel inspired. Nobody embodies that energy more than Athena Calderone, the multi-hyphenate whose world blends design, food and entertaining. You’re probably familiar with her popular online destination, EyeSwoon. It was a thrill to chat with her about her love of food, her personal style and her pandemic lessons in our exclusive interview. (page 118) Hayley Saunders: The inspiration doesn’t stop there. Everything’s coming up spring in Chris Plantan’s charming garden, where she shares the entertainer’s must-have wine essentials (page 60). DeMarco Williams takes us inside the Nashville Black-owned dining scene, highlighting five restaurants to try on your next stop to Music City (page 104). And beloved actor Stanley Tucci reflects on his Italian upbringing and shares some family recipes (page 199). KN: How and what we eat has certainly changed over the past two years. Anne Roderique-Jones examines the grand tradition of doing business while breaking bread and asks: Is the power lunch dead (page 64)? Plus we’re in the midst of a major mushroom boom, propelled by a foraging frenzy, a DIY renaissance and a plant-based eating movement. Brittany Chaffee explores this pandemic-driven phenomenon (page 206). Kitchen connoisseur Andrew Parks, meanwhile, takes us on a wild ride chasing down the world’s greatest copperware (page 190). HS: This issue also offers a few life lessons. First, stop and smell the roses, as Bonnie Culbertson suggests in her Provence scent guide (page 180). Next, enjoy the many riches around you, like resident outdoorswoman Laura Schara does with her favorite wild Minnesota foods (page 185). And finally, do good, like the trailblazers leading the upcycled beauty charge that’s helping combat American food waste (page 50).
Happy reading,
Kate Nelson Editor-in-Chief

HOW UPCYCLED BEAUTY IS HELPING COMBAT AMERICA’S FOOD WASTE PROBLEM. BY MARISA PETRARCA
50
Artful Living
PHOTOGRAPHY BY CARMEN PALMA
YOUR BREAKFAST ROUTINE AND YOUR SKINCARE
regimen have more in common than you might think. While upcycled beauty has been around for years, today it’s one of the buzziest sustainability trends. For the uninitiated, the concept centers around transforming otherwise unusable food ingredients into high-quality cosmetics and skincare products. And that spells a win-win for the environment and your complexion. Food once destined for the trash can — think used coffee grounds, discarded plum kernels, unsellable bananas and the like — is getting a snazzy new lease on life. That’s thanks to beauty industry innovators who saw an opportunity to introduce more eco-conscious brands into the marketplace while simultaneously helping address America’s food waste problem. It’s a worthwhile endeavor considering that about 40% of the nation’s food supply is thrown away each year, per the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Now, these ingredients are being repurposed into skincare products worthy of your top shelf. Coffee grounds become decadent exfoliants, plum kernels get coldpressed into luxurious oils, and antioxidant-rich banana actives fuel everything from lip balm to face cream. And as these lines arrive at top retailers, the movement is finally getting its well-deserved time in the spotlight. A slew of indie brands are leading the crusade, including UpCircle, LOLI, BYBI, Kadalys and Le Prunier. They work directly with community partners to upcycle ingredients from places like cafes, farms and even manufacturing facilities. The bottom line: They’re pioneering the future of sustainable beauty for big-name companies to follow suit — and proving that the sourcing process is all about fostering meaningful relationships. “A chance encounter with a barista in a local coffee shop led us to the idea of salvaging coffee grounds,” explains UpCircle cofounder Anna Brightman. When she and her brother learned that literally a billion pounds were being sent to landfills each year, they got to work. The sibling duo teamed up with artisan coffee shops to repurpose unused grounds for refreshing face and body exfoliators. UpCircle now offers a full lineup of products with nearly perfect five-star reviews across the board. For beauty industry veteran Tina Hedges, the idea to start LOLI came from a personal revelation. She recalls her turning point: “I realized I’d been part of this dirty business of beauty that is polluting with plastic, wasting water, and harming people with synthetics.” So she set out to impact the industry in the most extraordinary way possible: by launching her own sustainable beauty brand in 2018. Today, it’s clear that upcycled beauty isn’t just a passing fad but a growing movement backed by popular demand. To wit: In the past two years, both LOLI and UpCircle have hit shelves at mega retailer Ulta. And they’re not alone in their seemingly inevitable beauty-aisle takeover. Britishborn BYBI, which leverages discarded fruits from industrial juicing, joined Target’s clean beauty lineup in 2021. So what does the future of upcycled beauty look like? We know this much: Sustainability is the new normal, and it’s revolutionizing how we care for ourselves and our world. Sure, reinventing our self-care regimen with new lotions and potions won’t reverse the nation’s food waste crisis on its own — but it is definitely making us think twice about what we discard. After all, as Brightman explains, “it’s only waste once it’s wasted.”

ONE OF MY FAVORITE INVITATIONS TO BOTH
extend and receive is, Please stop by for a glass of wine and light conversation. It immediately evokes a pleasant, casual and delicious interval into the otherwise mundane every day. In keeping with the light invitation, I like to set a table or cart with several varietals to enjoy. You’ll need a few essentials to pull off the offering, which is part of the fun. These ready accessories make even the casual oenophile feel prepared. Decanters, chillers, stemware, bottle collars and coasters all serve a functional purpose while making your presentation interesting. I was surprised to learn that a large part of enjoying wine actually doesn’t have anything to do with taste, but rather, smell. This is where decanting and glass selection come into play. The good news? It doesn’t need to be complicated, and decanters are beautiful to have in full view. So which wines do you really need to decant? From young to old, red to white to rosé, most varietals benefit from decanting, even for a few seconds. Fundamentally, decanting serves two purposes: to separate a wine from any sediment that may have formed and to aerate it, allowing the flavors and aromas that were dormant while bottled to expand and breathe. Now that the vino is ready to enjoy, it’s time to select the right glass. Generally, red wine glasses have a wider, roomier bowl. This exposes more oxygen to the surface of the wine, allowing the full-bodied flavors to open up and show you what they’re made of. Conversely, white wines typically don’t require as much aeration to open up and therefore are fine being housed in a slimmer glass with a smaller rim. The right temperature is essential for all wines. Chillers keep your favorite vino properly cooled and are especially useful when entertaining alfresco. I prefer an all-purpose ice bucket, which offers flexibility for variations in bottle shape and style. I absolutely adore seeing the beautiful wine labels exposed while chilling in a less restrictive ice bucket. (I think we can all admit to occasionally buying some bottles just for the label!) Finally, a wine collar or ring ensures there won’t be unsightly drips or stains on your service surface or table linens. They absorb drips that run down the bottle and are available individually or as part of a set. You can monogram a simple silver one or mix and match more intricate materials and designs. You’ll be glad you have them on the occasion your guests opt to serve themselves. So extend the invitation, set the stage and enjoy the feeling that comes with entertaining with confidence and style.

POWER
IT’S NOON: WHERE ARE YOU?
If the answer is donning a perfectly tailored suit, perched in a red leather banquette and sipping a crisp white wine — all while discussing your next venture capital deal — then you’ve nailed the power lunch. But in today’s world, is anyone actually doing this anymore? ANNE RODERIQUE-JONES ASKS: Corporate expense accounts were IS THE POWER LUNCH DEAD? giving way to in-house cafeterias I L L U S T R AT I O N B Y K L AW E R Z E C Z Y and sad desk salads long before the pandemic relegated us to our home offices. These days, it seems we’re more likely to be discussing big ideas and closing big deals over Zoom rather than over three martinis. Which begs the question: Is the power lunch dead? It depends who you ask. The term “power lunch” was coined in 1979 by former Esquire Editor-in-Chief Lee Eisenberg. He penned the definitive guide to the phenomenon, setting the scene in the Four Seasons Grill Room along Park Avenue, at one time the hottest lunch reservation in New York City. As Eisenberg explains, “It was to midday in Manhattan what Studio 54 was to midnight in Manhattan.” Here, New York City elite like Nora Ephron, Henry Kissinger and Jackie Onassis sat at tables draped in cream linens — and set far enough apart that you couldn’t steal your neighbor’s big idea. Eisenberg’s opinion is decisive: “Yes, the power lunch is dead. In fact, it was already dead before the pandemic had us all eating last night’s leftovers alone in our kitchen standing at the counter in our sweatpants.” He notes that the decline began in the late nineties, when it wasn’t cool to spend hours languishing in a pricey restaurant. “People were now into grabbing a salad and taking it back to their desk,” he says. “So while COVID has radically changed where and how we work, it’s hard to blame it for the demise of the power lunch.” Not so fast, though. Bret Csencsitz, owner of illustrious New York City haunt Gotham, remains optimistic. “I believe in the power lunch,” he asserts. “For nearly four decades, Gotham has been known for its power lunch scene — primarily a mix of business lunches, publishing lunches and longtime clients who would lunch with us almost daily. We’re excited about the return of lunch service, allowing for meaningful conversations in a grand setting that’s both special and inspiring.” Another proponent is Ti Adelaide Martin, proprietor of Commander’s Palace in New Orleans, a stalwart for midday power players. She acknowledges, however, that the tradition has evolved over time. “People used to think of the power lunch as business men and three martinis,” she says. “Well at Commander’s, they may have three martinis, but it may just as likely be three ladies or three young entrepreneurs strategizing or celebrating.” The power lunch is dead! The power lunch is thriving! Which is it? Here’s an idea: Let’s make it socially acceptable to have a homemade meal in your athleisure one day and a three-course lunch in a three-piece suit the next. Cheers to both, with your crisp white or that third martini.

WITH HIS WHITE POWDERED PONYTAIL AND STARCHED COLLARS,
Karl Lagerfeld is having a global style moment — even three years after his death. From bespoke dinner jackets to sleek metal chairs, hundreds of the fashion designer’s personal possessions have caused an international buying frenzy during a series of three blockbuster Sotheby’s sales. It all started in Paris and Monaco with fall 2021 online and in-person auctions smashing records. Final totals quadrupled early estimates, bringing in €18.2 million. Hailing from 60 countries, some 1,500 bidders got in on the action, with a third of them being new to Sotheby’s — proof that the Lagerfeld mystique still lingers. The former Chanel creative director was known for his exacting eye, a talent that extended to his many homes. An obsessive collector, he created highly curated interiors throughout his lifetime. From art deco to French 18th century to the colorful Italian designs of the Memphis Group, Lagerfeld dove deeply into design periods then moved on. But perhaps the place that best exemplified his penchant for modernity was his futuristic atelier on the Quai Voltaire in Paris. Lagerfeld filled the airy flat with a tsunami of books along with 21st century furniture made of metal, glass and concrete. Pieces by Marc Newson and Gino Sarfatti fetched prices well above their estimates, while a 2007 Soleil Noir mirror by Martin Szekely achieved a world record for the artist at €375,500. Drawings by Lagerfeld himself attracted great interest. One of the most sought after
was the portrait of his companion, Jacques de Bascher; Retour de la Vallée des émeraudes sold for €163,800 against an estimate of just €600. “Collectors from around the world eagerly pursued Karl Lagerfeld’s objects and drawings, cementing his status as a fashion icon,” explains Sotheby’s France Vice President Pierre Mothes. “The ‘kaiser’ would surely have been touched by this tremendous public success.” Above all, Lagerfeld is remembered for his carefully crafted persona, complete with dark glasses and fingerless gloves. So it’s no surprise that his clothing and accessories attracted great attention. At the top of the list: a 2010 black embossed lambskin Chanel tote that the style icon carried daily, complete with his photo ID pass to the 2011 FIAC contemporary art show. In fierce global bidding, it sold for € 94,500, a record for a Chanel bag. Additional pieces from Lagerfeld’s wardrobe sparked bidding wars, such as a 2008 black wool Dior jacket (€ 35,280) and a set of 10 pairs of his iconic fingerless gloves (€ 20,160). The concluding auction held in March in Cologne, Germany, featured a selection of works and objects from Lagerfeld’s last residence in Louveciennes, just outside Paris. It focused on early 20th century German art with an assortment of significant advertising posters collected over the course of 30 years. And in a setting befitting this king of design, the objects were on view at the opulent Oppenheim Palace in Cologne, the new Sotheby’s German headquarters.

IF YOU’RE GOING OUT INTO THE WORLD TO EAT, THEN WHY NOT DRESS WELL —
and appropriately — for dinner? You can pay homage to the traditions of your cuisine with the nuances of your attire. The well-dressed man looks like himself anywhere he goes while also looking right at home. Here are some ways to offer sartorial tribute wherever you dine.
The French Gastronomic Temple You don’t need a dress code for an excuse to get a bit formal. When you sit down at a wonderful French restaurant where there are about five forks and the wine list weighs a ton, you’re ushered into a world of elegance where everything has been considered. In a setting like this, you should dress the part. I’ve advocated for a suit you can lay down in (like corduroy) and there are certainly times for that, like reading a Tolstoy novel by the fire on a weekend afternoon (or pretending to). This is different. You need a truly formal suit, something to meet the moment. I don’t want to frighten you, but it’s time for a double-breasted suit in a dark shade. This ensemble flatters most men by extending the vertical lines, making you appear taller, and, incidentally, slimmer. Ralph Lauren Purple Label always has some strong options. You’ll need a dress shirt (this isn’t an oxford cloth situation), and French stalwart Charvet is as good as any. Add in a dark silk knit tie (Charvet can help with that, too) or a tie with very few, very discreet white dots (I’m getting excited just thinking about this). If you have any handmade shoes, now is the time. Ditto for a luxurious overcoat. When you’re that well-dressed, you deserve a three-hour meal — and don’t forget the Bas-Armagnac.
The Sushi Bar The best Japanese food appears simple, but like the best minimalist art, the limited elements make everything matter even more. Sartorially speaking, a concise palette is not a default setting. On the contrary, because each shade has to be correct, the stakes are raised. My tailoring friends who obsess over clothes appreciate the many shades of gray. Specifically, a gray flannel suit, which is a good decision for your first tailor-made suit. A warmer, lighter gray (as opposed to a more severe dark gray) is a lovely choice. Add a cashmere turtleneck in cream or almond and some tobacco suede Alden loafers, and you’re a model of thoughtful restraint. You’re in a tonal zone that people can admire. If you’re craving some dynamism, a vivid pocket square offers the perfect counterpoint, like a touch of wasabi.
The Trattoria A good trattoria is welcoming, bright and straightforward. The Italians may take dressing seriously, but that doesn’t mean they can’t express themselves and have a good time doing it. Bring a little pattern into your life. A herringbone or houndstooth sports coat is the benchmark and should probably be Italian. Look up Milan-based Massimo Alba, who has a way with fabrics, color and pattern. Do you have a shirt with some texture — perhaps a fine corduroy shirt in burgundy or even rust? Give it a try. And moleskin pants are very overlooked; I don’t know why, as they’re the embodiment of comfort and ease, and in a winning color (say a deep gray or a rich green), they’ll quickly become favorites. If a silk scarf is good outside, it can be just as good inside (and if people mistake you for the artistic director of La Scala, so be it). Order an aged grappa and nod to your adoring public.
The Dive Bar Not everything needs to be classical music. Sometimes you want Tom Petty on the jukebox. Say I’m going to a saloon in Montana — I’ll wear a chore jacket, a chambray shirt and a pair of old chinos with a canvas military belt. The key here is that the clothes are worn-in and unfussy but that they still fit well. You can find this sort of thing for serious prices from Double RL or more reasonably at J.Crew. Or track down high-end versions from cult brands like Beams Plus and East Harbor Surplus. You can even scour eBay for the perfect field coat or, if you’re so lucky, wear one that once belonged to an uncle. Even when you’re dressing down, it’s good to have something specific that reflects your personality (or that just brings good luck). It could be an ancient canvas baseball cap, a bandana around the neck (which only works if you’ve done it a lot), an old Filson Mackinaw, a pair of jeans dating back to the Carter administration, or colored laces in your desert boots. A well-dressed man, like a dive bar, should have a few stylish idiosyncrasies. Salut! A Minnesotan turned New Yorker, David Coggins is the author of the New York Times bestseller Men and Style, and writes a style column for Artful Living.

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF LUXURY
travel addicts: those who have stayed at Jade Mountain and those who have not. Those fortunate enough to have experienced this exotic resort will tell you why it should be on your bucket list. The creation of architect/ owner Nick Troubetzkoy, this adults-only hideaway is one of the most romantic retreats in the world. Jade Mountain is located on St. Lucia, an off-the-beaten-path eastern Caribbean island nation that’s home to volcanic beaches, world-class scuba diving, quaint fishing villages, and a pair of stunning cone-shaped mountains known as the Pitons. Situated above the 600-acre sister resort of Anse Chastanet, Jade Mountain is the only hotel on the isle with a helipad, allowing guests to arrive via helicopter. The property features just 29 guest accommodations aptly dubbed sanctuaries. No two are alike, and unique glass colors identify each suite. Upon entering, guests walk across private bridges that feel like something out of a futuristic sci-fi movie. Sweeping openair spaces boast living areas, bedrooms and private infinity pools cantilevered over nature. Visitors are assigned a team of butlers known as “major domos,” who are available 24 hours a day and are summoned using provided cell phones. They cater to any request, including

unpacking luggage, delivering breakfast in bed and arranging island tours. The culinary offerings are centered around “Jade cuisine” — modern Caribbean fare featuring local fruits, vegetables, greens, nuts, spices and herbs sourced from the estate’s organic farm. An array of restaurant options are available, from Jade Mountain Club to the eateries of Anse Chastanet, including Treehouse, Trou au Diable, Jungle Beach Grill and Emerald’s, which serves exclusively vegetarian and vegan fare. Onsite amenities include the Kai en Ciel spa, free daily yoga, bike rentals, a library and a superb upscale boutique for shopping. One activity not to miss is the Emerald Estate chocolate tasting experience, featuring handcrafted sweets made from organic cocoa beans grown on the property. Anse Chastanet beach, just a short stroll down the hill, is a sugar-like sand beach with lounge chairs and tended waterfront service. The offshore waters are part of the marine reserve and are great for swimming and snorkeling. Kayaks, sailboats and paddleboards are all available at the watersports center. All told, Jade Mountain triumphs as an unmatched and intimate romantic resort with remarkable service. It is truly a slice of heaven on earth, making it a must-visit destination for discerning travelers.

IN GOOD TASTE NASHVILLE’S BLACK-OWNED DINING SCENE IS HEATING UP. BY DEMARCO WILLIAMS
JUST AS THE NASHVILLE SOUND IS CHANGING WITH EVERY NEW RELEASE
from Black country music acts like Mickey Guyton and Chapel Hart, so too is the city’s epicurean story being rewritten with each meal. Sure, hot chicken and Swett’s soul food have received plenty of praise over the years, but these recognition-worthy Black-owned eateries are singing a different tune, with inventive dishes like crawfish queso and creole salmon croquettes coming from their kitchens. Like the refreshing image of Guyton performing at the Super Bowl, the aromas wafting about Music City are new and exciting. Here are five Black-owned restaurants to try during your next Nashville visit.

Sinema Housed in the historic Melrose Theatre, Sinema is a fitting name for this gastronomic production. With a dining room decked out in velvety banquettes and whimsical light fixtures, the space feels like the set of a moody sixties drama. “Sinema reflects both the city’s rich history and the vibrant, exciting pulse of today,” says co-owner Q Taylor. During the week, you’ll find smartly dressed patrons sitting beneath black-and-white photos of Hollywood royalty while noshing on short ribs and pan-seared scallops. Come weekends, the eatery rolls out the red carpet for its beloved bottomless brunch, where dishes like Fruity Pebbles French toast and jalapeño cheese grits shine. And when it’s time to powder your nose, Sinema’s selfie mirror provides an Instagramworthy photo op.
The Southern V Husband-and-wife team Clifton and Tiffany Hancock opened this brickand-mortar spot in 2018 after years of cooking up their plant-based goodness at farmers’ markets and other various locales. And what a brilliant idea the expansion was. At this spacious Buchanan Street address, herbivores can spread out and enjoy the two-handed pepperand-onion-topped TSV Philly the way it was intended. Trust us: You’ll want your fellow diners at arm’s length as you devour the popular Hot Chick’n sandwich (fried seitan). You might be tempted to keep your vegan chocolate chip cookie all to yourself, too, but this delightful dessert is too good not to share.
EG & MC Friends and business partners Clint Gray, Mo Moore, Gemaal Pratt and E.J. Reed have two sides to their burgeoning epicurean empire. There’s Slim & Husky’s, the casual, hip hop–powered pizza joint slinging pies from Atlanta to Sacramento. Then there’s this buttoned-up 21+ lounge. “We provide an authentic craft cocktail experience accompanied by an appreciation for education, design and Southern flavor,” Gray explains. But just because evenings here are fueled by unbelievable soul music and Uncle Nearest whiskey cocktails, it doesn’t mean EG & MC can’t have a stellar culinary side. On the contrary — lamb meatballs, a divine yam-mac concoction and other Southern tapas show a unique kitchen nimbleness.

The Cupcake Collection What if you had a bake sale every single day? That’s the question Mignon Francois asked before opening the Cupcake Collection in 2008. From the looks of the lines outside her Nashville and New Orleans outposts these days, we have a clear answer. Faithful customers score strawberry, red velvet and sweet lemonade cupcakes straight out of the oven. Like any bake sale worth its weight in flour, Francois’s offerings also include vegan treats, gluten-free sweets and traditional birthday cakes. “We believe that good cake is connected to great memories,” she muses. “Our cupcakes take you back to a nostalgic time or place when you experienced something that was made with love.”

Annually voted one of the city’s best restaurants, Riddim N Spice is the Caribbean-flavored brainchild of brothers Rashean Conaway and Kamal Kalokoh (whose celebrity fan club includes Drake and Rihanna). Seems like it’s in their blood, seeing as how their mother, Ouida Bradshaw, has run the beloved farmers’ market establishment Jamaicaway for years. It naturally follows that when you visit this North Nashville eatery, you feel like family. While the dining hall is bright and colorful like an eclectic auntie’s living room, the kitchen reminds you more of Granny’s house — full of flavor and love. Favorites include oxtails, honey jerk chicken, and rice bowls topped with everything from curry beef to cabbage. Vegans, rest easy: Like a thoughtful mom, the menu is also considerate of those with dietary restrictions.

Understated elegance is the name of the game at Imari, the new authentic Japanese restaurant in Brentwood from restaurateur Philip Camino. The intimate dining room feels like walking into a friend’s home. Request one of six seats at the chef’s counter or choose from a handful of indoor and outdoor tables for more privacy. Begin with chilled fresh tofu that’s as creamy as burrata along with delicately fried maitake mushroom tempura for an umami punch. Seasonal seafood and wagyu beef are imported from Japan, and even the ostensibly straightforward chicken gyoza are impossibly juicy and flavorful, anchored by a crispy base. There are sophisticated sushi hand rolls, A5 wagyu strip loin served with fresh wasabi, and local ice cream and sorbet for dessert in partnership with Sweet Rose Creamery, all accompanied by Japanese beers and a thoughtful sake program. Pressed for time? Order a sushi bento box to go.

There are just two treatment rooms in this whitewashed beach cottage plus a private garden for relaxing in afterward, so book an appointment well in advance. Every facial includes customized masks mixed to order along with a unique combination of high-frequency LED light therapy, cranial touch massage, lymphatic drainage and gua sha depending on your skin’s needs. Don’t be embarrassed if you’re lulled to sleep by the soothing ocean soundtrack and your therapist’s soft hands — it happens to the best of us.

The menu boasts a collection of Spanish classics simply prepared with the finest ingredients (including custom-blend olive oil) and executed with impeccable technique. The 150-acre attraction boasts dozens of winding trails through the Japanese garden, California garden and oak forest. A bevy of geese and ducks is born each spring, too. The lakeside lookout is a prime location to observe fish and turtles, and birdwatchers will delight in spotting 100+ species, including flashy wild parrots. has been dubbed “the modern girl’s Martha Stewart” by The New York Times. And in this elite club of domestic goddesses is an apt place for Athena Calderone. The interior designer, culinary storyteller and entertaining extraordinaire has established herself as an arbiter of good taste with her cult-favorite digital destination EyeSwoon. Her influence, however, reaches far beyond Instagram (although she has certainly amassed followers aplenty there). Indeed, the multi-hyphenate’s accomplishments are impressive: two best-selling books, including a James Beard Award winner. Creative collabs with top brands like Zara Home, Beni Rugs and La Ligne. A popular podcast, More Than One Thing, where she interviews tastemakers and famous friends like interior designer Nate Berkus, fashion icon Jenna Lyons, chef/activist Sophia Roe and actress Naomi Watts. These are also the kinds of luminaries who show up for FOMO-inducing fetes at the enchanting Brooklyn brownstone she shares with her husband, DJ Victor Calderone, and their pooch, Tuco. Part of Athena’s appeal, no doubt, is that she’s the real deal. She doesn’t just curate a scintillating social-media feed to garner likes and clicks; she gives us a glimpse inside her perfectly imperfect life. That includes sharing moments of sadness, sorrow and stress. Because those, too, are part of a beautiful life — something Athena strongly believes we all deserve. Beauty, of course, is in the eye of the beholder, and Athena’s
definition of beauty defies expectations. It’s not impeccable or immaculate. It’s unexpected, opposing, inexact, offbeat, even at times odd (her words, not ours). Just like her, it’s more than meets the eye. And it’s this complex, complicated, contrasting nature that makes Athena, and in turn her creations, so swoonworthy. This spring, she chatted with us about her design inspirations, her love of food, her approach to entertaining, her daily rituals — and the beauty of it all.
How do the realms of design, food and entertaining intersect in your life? I am a multi-hyphenate at heart, which means I am equally all three: interior designer, chef, author and more! I’ve gotten advice over the years to pick a lane — food or design — but the truth is, it’s the combination of these two disciplines that led to my success. Just as I would layer flavors in the kitchen or mix design eras in a room, the essence of my creative approach was the same for both. I’m drawn to aesthetics and I love to create beauty, but I seek harmony in the tension and the juxtaposition of opposing flavors, textures and hues. I am constantly searching for that unexpected element to add cohesion and contrast across all realms. A happy accident in the kitchen might spark a new creative recipe in design and vice versa. Seasonality also intersects each of these facets — a basket of verdant veggies and fresh fruit after a visit to the farmers’ market will inspire the menu for an upcoming gathering, the color palette of the tablescape and even the decorations. There simply can’t be one without the other.
can pop and functional items, like the hood, can disappear. In doing so, the dark lower cabinets recede, bringing the layered decorative shelves into focus. Not only is natural light important in New York for our physical health, it’s also imperative to my work photographing vignettes and shooting video. Victor and I agreed early on that we would open up the parlor floor to bring in as much light as possible. We did this by taking down the weight-bearing wall that divided the stairway from the rest of the space and inserting a wall of bi-fold glass doors onto the terrace to create a truly special indoor/outdoor experience. Not only is the terrace

Your Brooklyn kitchen has sparked endless inspiration. Can you talk us through the process of designing this space? The kitchen is both my sanctuary and my workshop. I decided on darker cabinetry in Farrow & Ball Railings and Calacatta Paonazzo marble counters with Parisian-style open shelving. I purposefully kept the upper part of the kitchen light in both material and styling in order to contrast the dark cabinets. My island is an unconventional large square — perfect for photography! — set on legs so it feels more like a piece of furniture. After pining after the heavily veined marble I spied in Joseph Dirand’s Parisian kitchen, I decided on a similar free-floating shelf in ours (more details on that process can be found on EyeSwoon). In my research, I learned that bracket-free stone shelving has to be supported with brace walls, so we had to address that early on in the renovation process. I also chose to eliminate upper cabinets, instead focusing on open shelves to maintain a minimal sensibility. Knowing that open kitchen shelving can easily appear cluttered, I decided on pale textured plaster on the wall behind it to create a blank canvas on which decorative items

FEATURE a space where we grill, lounge, dine and play with our pup, Tuco, but it’s also an amazing feature when casually entertaining, too.
For you, food is about so much more than just nourishment. What meaning does food hold for you? Food is a source of inspiration, creativity and most of all, connection: connection to food, connection to beauty, connection to gratitude, connection to one another. It nourishes our soul, our eyes and our hearts just as much as it does our bodies. Being in the kitchen provided the creative outlet I was yearning for. It became my studio and my workshop. It’s where I took risks, where I failed and persevered. I learned so much about myself through food and cooking. For me, nothing is dreamier than those late hours at an intimate gathering: Red wine rings are on the tablecloth, laughter is abundant, maybe a fire is crackling and everyone is serving themselves family-style around the table. Those lingering moments are what I love most. We come to the table to gather, to let our guard down, to open our hearts and to connect with others — food has the power to do all those things and more.
My true passion is creating beauty. Aesthetics guide me in everything I do, whether I’m hunting for the most vibrant vegetables at the farmers’ market or setting a stunning table. I truly believe food just tastes better when it’s beautiful and made with love, hence the title of my book Cook Beautiful. It’s the reason that I strive to create a feast for the senses every time I cook. While taste and smell are obviously paramount to how we perceive a meal, visual cues are just as important. Before a single bite passes our lips, our brains are working out an answer to the question, Does this look good to me? Whether we’re at home or out at a restaurant, we all eat with our eyes. A beautiful plate of food has emotional power and wholly undeniable magic — and my goal is to help you capture that. Beautiful, by the way, does not necessarily mean complicated. My own style is rooted in simplicity; while aesthetic is obviously

paramount to me, so too is accessibility. Even a family dinner is an opportunity to create something special that connects you and uplifts you as you dine together. I cherish those moments. I love to bring a similar family-style approach to dinner parties, too. Creating a stunning meal is about so much more than what meets the eye — it’s about building community and making ordinary gatherings feel like celebrations. With a little thoughtful planning, you can execute simple ideas that appear to be far more sophisticated or difficult than they actually are.
What is it about the act of baking that you love so much?
PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHANIE STANLEY
My husband is a DJ who traveled a lot, so I didn’t have that much of a social life after the birth of our son, Jivan. Rather than getting a babysitter and going out, I would put Jivan to sleep, pump up the music, then start baking and rolling out pastry. I found I enjoyed the solitude and creativity, and that led to me experimenting more with food. I would find myself making these elaborate meals, setting a gorgeous table and
luring friends to my home — so it became a creative outlet then it became a social outlet for me at the same time. I would say I really found myself through food.
What does an inspired dinner party look like in 2022? It’s no secret that I love to entertain. The prep, the planning, the cooking, the chopping — I love everything about it. When I’m planning a dinner party, I think about every granular detail. For this, I always turn to Mother Nature for inspiration. A trip to the farmers’ market will influence the entire evening: the menu, the tablescape, the florals, the decorations, even the color palette. Everything should feel cohesive and tell a story. I like to curate experiences that engage all the senses, even if it’s just an intimate gathering, to transport my guests into another world for a brief moment in time — one that’s guided by sight, taste, smell, sound and touch! And who doesn’t want a sensorial escape like that?! I have always been a fan of using seasonal fruits and veggies as decor. There is nothing more beautiful than black Champagne grapes cascading from a pedestal bowl. Or petite pears with their leaves still clinging to them sprinkled down the table. Less is more. Inventive decor is more. And not being wasteful is most certainly more! Overall, a more thoughtful and casual approach to a table feels refreshing. I’m also a big fan of family-style and will often set up a stylish self-serve station with wine glasses, appetizer plates and flatware to make it easier for guests (and the host!) to enjoy the food and wine throughout the evening as they please. This is also a great place to showcase decor with a vase and some seasonal branches, moody candlelight, and of course a cornucopia of delicious appetizers to graze upon — charcuterie, cheeses, fruits, bread, olives, dips and more.
How do your homes reflect your personality and beliefs? And how can we achieve this for ourselves? My homes are the manifestations of years of dreaming, scheming, planning and yearning for that which my eye craves. It’s a culmination of the many things that make up who I am: my love

FEATURE of cooking, designing, curating and entertaining. It is my masterpiece. It’s also a visual representation of my eye, my curious nature and my evolving aesthetic. While it may look elevated and aspirational from the outside, believe me there is a fission of beauty and chaos that ensues behind the scenes. My main message for others who want to design their own beautiful spaces is to be open to mistakes (I have definitely endured plenty of them in designing both of my homes), take risks, follow your heart and keep it simple. And remember that beautiful does not necessarily mean complicated or expensive!
materials allowed me to see juxtaposition, symmetry and imperfection through a new lens. These artisanal rugs are of exceptional quality with a beautifully soft hand feel, but they are also tough and durable, able to withstand high traffic areas and look even more beautiful over time. Due to their handmade nature, they are imperfect in shape, the edges aren’t exact, there is always something slightly offbeat about them — but that’s what makes these rugs perfect. Neat edges and exact lines would be dull and flat. I’m always searching for the opposite of that. Mother Nature is perfect in her imperfection, so I’m always looking to mimic her in everything I do, from designing to cooking to entertaining.
What design trends and movements are grabbing your attention right now? I have seen a move toward organic materials like travertine, terra cotta and plaster to mimic the natural environment at home. And while I love and will always love neutrals, I think they’ll take a bit of a back seat this year as people start to experiment with color again. That said, the palette will stay very close to hues you’d find in nature. In our 2022 forecast on EyeSwoon, we predict paint rollers will be dipped in rosy, terra cotta tones swathing rooms from wall to ceiling for a complete monochromatic moment that envelops you in its coziness. That comfort factor can be dialed up with velvet furniture in the same tone to create a truly tranquil environment (aka the perfect spot to snuggle and snooze!). Who wouldn’t want to design a room that feels like a warm hug?
You celebrate the beauty of imperfection. Can you tell us more about that?

I am always trying to offset the expected. I love to create symmetry, then break it. I love repetition and order, but I also love to resist the obvious. Somehow there is common ground and a sense of balance in those very imperfections. Take my kitchen shelves, for example. Regular dinnerware and kitchen tools sit opposite a diminutive and quirky wrought-iron lamp with a mini vintage rattan lampshade. It’s unexpected and slightly odd, but it immediately draws the eye in, beckoning it to dance around the shelves. How I designed my Beni Rugs collection, Broken Symmetry, follows the same vernacular. Trawling the souk for rugs and appreciating their texture and patina through new textiles, sun-washed hues and rudimentary
constructed, timeless, classic and buildable, but above all, I gravitate toward pieces that make me feel both sophisticated and comfortable in my own skin. In my design work, I celebrate contrast, and this definitely carries over into how I style myself, too. In fact, I will often see elements from the clothes I’m attracted to mimicked in vignettes or moments around my home. I’m constantly drawn to opposing styles. The juxtaposition of something patinaed against something slick and new is what makes a room, an outfit more interesting and complex. For me, it’s all about creating that visual story to engage the eye, both in the outfits I wear and the rooms I design.
What are your must-do daily rituals and why are these so important?
PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY EQ3
Coffee, first thing with half-and-half always! Then I burn palo santo from my Beau Rush ceramic bowl and set my intentions for the day as I sip on coffee and slowly wake up. There is always a ton of beautiful light spilling in through the bi-fold doors of my kitchen, so I will often sit there and breathe in a few mindful moments before my inbox starts calling. Rituals are so powerful. They can open up portals to hidden spaces within us, helping us to expand, exhale and renew from the inside out. It’s also an opportunity to revel in some repetition. Those anticipatory moments bring us immense joy because we look forward to them each day — we savor that precious time we set aside just for us.
And finally, what lessons have you learned amid the pandemic?
How has your personal style evolved over time, especially in the past two years? Over the years, I have defined my core style and often go after the same silhouettes. Just like design, I gravitate toward garments that are well-
For me, the silver lining has been the time it’s offered so many of us for self-exploration as we all try to find meaning in this moment. I’m incredibly grateful for the many lessons this time has taught me and continues to teach me. One of those lessons is taking better care of my emotional, mental, physical and spiritual health by setting clear boundaries to protect them and new rituals to enhance and develop them. I am also taking more time to be with family and to prioritize rest — and yes, that means shutting down my computer and leaving my phone at home while I take Tuco for a walk. Being in nature is incredibly restorative for me, so I’ve been making concerted efforts to bask in Mother Nature whenever I can.

WHEN THE SITTING ROOM WAS TAPPED TO BRING ITS
personalized design approach to a custom home on Lake Minnetonka, the clients had a clear vision: an abode that could take the wear and tear of their young family (including a busy golden retriever) while balancing bold colors and modern design to yield a beautiful, livable home. Senior Interior Designer Megan Jackson Meder was particularly excited to dive in. The Sitting Room Studio had worked with the homeowners before, but a 7,061-square-foot new-construction house packed with color was a first. “Projects like this allow us to fully flex our collaborative and creative capabilities,” shares Meder, who worked in tandem with designer Hannah Winesburg as well as PKA Architecture and Vine Hill Partners on the project. The five-bedroom, five-bathroom home is a study in luxurious livability. The open floor plan lends itself to easy entertaining and, of course, full displays of Lake Minnetonka. Floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the main level frame the panoramic vistas. PKA Director of Design Chad Healy and team made the most of the narrow site and created a variety of spaces for enjoying the water, including a welcoming covered entry and a threeseason porch off the living room. Drop-down screens, a stunning limestone fireplace and hidden heaters make the porch a family favorite (at least three seasons out of the year). But that’s where color comes in. “Even in Minnesota winters, we’re surrounded by bright spots,” the owners gush. Their artwork collection largely inspired the palette. One piece painted by the client’s mother sits front and center in the foyer. “It’s an incredibly colorful and joyful piece that sets the tone for the home as you walk in,” explains Meder, who scattered deep jewel tones throughout the residence. Thoughtful twists on tone and pattern capture the livability the clients were craving. A pink rug, for example, would’ve felt too saturated for the living room, so Meder sourced an ombre option that softens the look. And Christian Lacroix and Romo fabrics create an adventurous palette that’s equally trend-forward and family-friendly.

Pops of color “talk to each other” throughout the open floor plan: Marigold, emerald and magenta are peppered in with pillows and are mirrored by a playful pattern on custom Palecek counter stools that cozy up to the navy kitchen island. Because the kitchen is so visible, it needed to feel more beautiful than utilitarian. Thoughtful bursts of color are offset by modern details, such as clean lines and natural materials like oak and steel. Everyday appliances are hidden — yet functional — behind cabinetry, while a walk-through pantry leads to the butler’s pantry. “The entire space stays beautiful easily,” Meder notes. “You have everything you need without seeing it.” One element that’s unquestionably meant to be seen is the three-level staircase. Modern lines and a mix of wood and steel make it as much a piece of art as an architectural necessity. Upstairs, an idyllic escape awaits. Built to capture the best water views, the owners’ suite sits down the hall from the kids’ rooms. It boasts a private rooftop deck and outdoor fireplace, a coffee bar, and a spacious closet and bathroom, where the clients embraced adventurous tile selections. “Tile became another source of color and style for the home,” says Meder, who used tile as art, including full-height wall applications. There’s still an homage to lakeside style here — you just need to look up. The team gave shiplap an unexpected twist by applying it to the ceiling, highlighting the modern architecture. And that’s not the only material reimagined. The clients chose a metallic wallpaper, evocative of oyster shells, to emphasize the interesting angles of the ceiling and reflect the evening moonlight. As the family settles into their lakeside abode, they’re confident they wouldn’t change a single thing. “The entire team encouraged us to choose what we loved,” they share. During the building process, they rented a house nearby and often walked over to see progress and work with the teams from The Sitting Room, PKA and Vine Hill Partners — all collaborating on design details to make their vision come to life. A very colorful life, that is.

David Heide, a sense of aesthetic balance is key. Blending period details with new practicality was the guiding tenet when David Heide Design Studio recently set out to remodel a Minneapolis condo, infusing it with an art deco elegance. “Early on, the client came up with the term ‘steamship moderne,’” he says, “and it all developed from there.” The client, John Ollmann, is a passionate collector of objets d’art from the 1920s and 1930s, a time when glamour, luxury and fine craftsmanship were de rigueur. With glorious views of the Mississippi River and the Stone Arch Bridge, the home needed plenty of storage with an effortless sense of vintage elegance. “I have always loved the golden age of ocean liners, with their sleek lines and rich materials,” Ollmann muses. Indeed, it was all about the materials in the primary bathroom, which feels like a sumptuous suite. Heide designed a nautical-inspired linen cabinet fashioned out of flame mahogany with nickel inlay. Accented with a circular mirror, the hutch mimics the look of a ship’s porthole. That same mahogany encases the bathtub, which takes pride of place in the center of the room. Just behind, a custom medicine cabinet features sliding mirrored doors that reveal an impressive collection of antique ship models. “Most of the ships depict the SS Normandie, which is considered the most beautiful ocean liner of all
time,” explains Ollmann. That same high style comes alive in the powder room, where the walls are lacquered in rich emerald green. Silver leaf adorns the ceiling, and a Taj Mahal quartzite sink adds a touch of refinement. “At night when the lights come on, the quartzite has a luminescence,” Heide notes. The kitchen, meanwhile, boasts an artful mix of polish and practicality. Playing up Ollmann’s favorite color, Essex Green cabinetry sets the stage and features a pass-through bar lined with shimmering white glass. Styled with vintage 1930s barware, the open space brings light into the home’s dining room and foyer. For a more utilitarian vibe, the lower cabinetry is clad in simple yet durable stainless steel, inspired by the kitchens on vintage ocean liners. “I wanted to embody the sense of being in a ship’s galley amidst the context of John’s amazing collection of decorative arts,” says Heide. But it’s the dining room where a discipline of design reigns. Because Ollmann has so many collectibles, the challenge was finding a way to showcase them in a curated, orderly fashion. So Heide designed a striking floor-to-ceiling vitrine to hold the coveted objects, from Tiffany desk accessories to 19th century ceramic Wally Birds. There’s truly a place for everything and everything in its place. “David knew how to tone it down so it doesn’t look like a movie set,” Ollmann summarizes. “It’s just the right mix of vintage and modern side by side.”

Baldamar marks the turning point where we usher in the new standard for style, service and steak. It means the menu’s made with old-world craft at its core and modern day meat eaters in mind — with flavors forged in fire and folded into pure primal perfection. It’s where every steak is aged 40 days and 40 nights for a taste of biblical proportion, and where crazy-fresh seafood means it was caught during your morning commute. At the bar sits every spirit imaginable, and someone who isn’t afraid to use them. This is more than a new steakhouse. It’s a line in the sand. It’s not just where you celebrate special occasions. It’s where you create them.

FAVORITE THINGS AT GRACE HILL, EVERYTHING FEELS FRESH AND BRIGHT. BY CHRIS LEE
STEP INTO KRISTI PATTERSON’S WAYZATA SHOP, GRACE HILL, AND
soak in the crisp colors, bright patterns and fun accessories. The vibe here is fresh, welcoming and casually gracious — a reflection of her style and her interior design work. It’s no surprise that her shop and work communicate so clearly. Patterson began her career in the ad business, where she honed her skills in branding and marketing. After 15 years, she refocused on her own creative abilities, channeling them into decor — first in her own home and eventually in others’ as well. “People started asking me to help them when they were working with builders,”she explains. “And builders liked that I had that business background and could put together a process for all the selections that go into a home.” All of this inspired Grace Hill, which she and Store Manager/Buying Director Amy McKee opened 11 years ago. The design studio shares the Wayzata storefront, and the two enterprises have a synergistic relationship. “When we’re presenting fabrics and finishes to clients, we also pull in a ginger jar or a rattan box from the store,” says Patterson. “That way they can visualize the room down to the last detail. They’re not just making decisions about the furniture, but about how they want the whole room to feel.” Her favorite things reflect her love of the gracious, welcoming home.

She deems her style “updated traditional with a Southern influence.” She explains: “In the South, they love to entertain and really want their homes to be functional for that. That’s an influence that affects my work a lot.” She loves to work with a mix of colors and patterns that creates a personal connection for homeowners and also welcomes visitors. “Clients want a home that brings them joy and tells their story,” she adds, “not what they’ve already seen on Pinterest or Instagram.” Layering in accessories, artwork, family photos, wall coverings and window treatments makes a home feel comfortable and inviting.
2 | Destination Charleston, South Carolina. In keeping with her love for Southern hospitality, she relishes the historic homes, colorful exteriors and beautiful courtyards — not to mention the fantastic shopping and dining. A couple of her favorite haunts: Charleston Place hotel and Anson Restaurant.

3 | Colors Patterson considers blue and white a neutral palette: It’s timeless, plays well with others and doesn’t lock you into a specific accent color. She specializes in crisp, bright colors: pink, orange, red, yellow and green. “Rooms with color are more approachable; it just welcomes you in,” she shares. White is also an important player in her designs and adds a sense of airiness and energy.

4 | Space to Design The living room, where everyone gathers for multiple functions. It requires a lot of ingenuity, including a great floor plan with flow and flexibility, as well as ultra comfortable family-friendly furniture and fabrics. The room’s window treatments, rugs, pillows, ottomans and benches also draw on her talent for selecting striking patterns and textiles. Then comes lighting: “I layer in overhead lights, sconces and lamps to create a cozy ambiance,” she notes.

5 | Project This casual dining area, looking out at the nearby lake, was originally meant for family meals. Then it became a work-from-home zone. The client wanted a sunny, inspiring work area with a pleasing Zoom backdrop. Patterson delivered with this personalitypacked space. The table, with its distressed finish, has a grounding effect. Upholstered chairs — covered in indoor/outdoor fabric and trimmed with a bold watermelon color — provide comfortable seating. No window treatments block the view, but she chose a grasscloth patterned with flowering branches to create interest (not to mention a delightful Zoom background).

Trays. “I use them in every single room,” she says. On the coffee table, she uses a tray to make a collection out of a stack of books, a plant and some candlesticks. On the island, to contain clutter. On a nightstand, to corral the remote, phone and eyeglasses. And, of course, trays are perfect for entertaining and serving.
7 | Motif Speaking of trays, there’s another fun flourish Patterson is loving lately: scallops. At her shop, she stocks trays and charcuterie boards embellished with scalloped edges in various sizes, colors and finishes. These entertaining accessories easily dress up a kitchen island.

Mark D. Sikes for his all-American flair and Meg Braff for her elegant yet approach aesthetic. “They both design such livable, traditional spaces that look comfortable, inviting and layered,” Patterson says. “A lot of their spaces are designed around entertaining, which I focus on when I’m designing for families. Hosting people in your home and making memories is a wonderful gift to your family and friends.”

IT WAS A SPARKLING NEW EDINA HOME, FRAMED BY GREAT
bones and full of gorgeous millwork. And a family was eager to move in and make it their own. But once they got settled, it felt like something was missing. Eventually, the owners realized the residence lacked soul, those hard-to-define aspects that make a house truly feel like a home. Enter Lisa Peck and Ally Partain of LiLu Interiors, two designers who live for making the intangible tangible — introducing those little details that ensure an abode is not only alluring but also reflective of its residents. “The owner has exquisite taste and the shell was there, but the home didn’t reflect their family values or their love of music, books and artistry — all the things that are important to them,” Peck notes. “Building the home was step one, then giving it a real soul was where we came in.” The family had a distinct point of view: traditional and refined yet open to whimsy and the unexpected. “We looked at ways their home could support them beyond just being beautiful — a place where they get to be themselves, where the needs of their soul are met,” explains Peck.
“Like when a visitor comes in, they understand you in a whole new way.” The interior design started with the sunroom, which ended up featuring a resin table with a bubble texture. “It’s unexpected and artful for a very traditional home to have that contemporary feel,” Peck says. Bingo: It showcases the owners’ love of surprise and bespoke details. The project took off from there. The formal living room needed to be lightened up — after all, two boys live here. The LiLu team shopped around for sofas but ultimately realized they’d need a custom-built frame to really match the scale of the space. They tapped Patricia Edwards for that job and opted to upholster it in a beige plaid fabric. “It was a little out of the comfort zone, but it creates a more casual feel,” notes Peck. “A plain beige sofa would have a different formality than one featuring a light, playful plaid.” So formal enough, but not too formal. There’s even a feet-up ottoman. “Those little things make a difference,” she adds.

A soothing color palette of sage green and chic blue are pulled through the 3,600-square-foot abode, creating a serene and grounded sanctuary. But they were still willing to take some risks, such as the bold teal animalprint game chairs or the floral Norwalk Furniture ottomans in the lower level family room. In other spaces, Galbraith & Paul wall coverings adorn the walls — the yellow entryway is a standout — and complement other scene-setting elements like a custom Dunes and Duchess drink table in the living room and Italian draperies with specialty linings throughout. Peck and Partain interviewed the tween twins to get their take on what their dream bedrooms would look like. Even at their tender ages, they had charming, articulate answers: One is an outdoorsman who loves Jackson Pollock, while the other wanted a space that felt like a “gentleman’s room.” The Pollock fan got splatter wallpaper on the ceiling, along with a large desk and oars decorating the walls. The gentleman got a plaid upholstered

club chair with a leather ottoman, a navy tweed headboard, and natty grayand-red fabric shades. Both rooms reflect their current loves but can grow with them, owing to the classic refinement of the design choices. “The rooms have a little touch of playful, a little unexpected, a little whimsical, but all in a very refined way,” says Peck. All of which perfectly reflects LiLu’s philosophy here: to create a gracious, welcoming home that mirrors the clients’ values and personalities. “Clients are usually trying to address a deeper need or concern with their interior project,” Peck concludes. “In this case, it was giving their home soul.” She thinks the blend of furnishings, colors and textures did just that. But that’s not just her post-design analysis — the client wholeheartedly agrees: “Everything in our home now has a story behind it and was designed just for us.” Log onto ArtfulLiving.com for a tour inside this Edina home.

wood. The smells we associate with our favorite travel memories can bring us right back to the time and place where we first experienced them, which is why it’s a brilliant idea to build our trips around the scents we hope to remember. One of the world’s quintessential fragrance-forward destinations? Provence. Whether you’re strolling local markets or driving past fields of flowers, the signature smells of France’s southern region teach us so much about its culture, history and way of life.
LAVENDER
In the age of Instagram, it’s a happy coincidence that the sweetest smelling site in Provence also happens to be one of its most pictureperfect. There are few places as dreamy as the 500-mile lavender route come June and July, when the flower is in full bloom. Views of vivid purple rows undulating across the countryside extend out in every direction, and a soothing aroma floats delicately on the summer breeze. This picturesque season culminates in the Corso of Lavender, an annual jubilee paying homage to the beloved perennial in Dignes-lesBains. The plant is also prized for its calming properties, which is why Digne is one of France’s top spa destinations. Wellness clubs benefit from both the ambrosial air and the healing waters of three mountain rivers that wind through town.

TRUFFLES
Nowhere does the adage “Follow your nose” take on more meaning than in the truffle trade. Provence is home to one of the world’s most prized varieties, the French black diamond. These culinary treasures are harvested with the help of pigs, who heed the call of truffles’ heady pheromones. Hunting season kicks off with a November festival in Richerenches, and the creatures’ well-calibrated snouts guide collectors to secret woodland troves. Les Pastras, an organic farm in the Luberon, gets you in on the action with truffle-hunting tours. After a day of chasing pigs to sought-after hot spots, you can enjoy a picnic of fresh hors d’oeuvres featuring — you guessed it — truffles, along with crisp Champagne and Les Pastras’ famous locally farmed oils. If you come up empty-handed, the Friday morning market in Carpentras offers plenty of high-end treats to take home with you.
OLIVE OIL
Speaking of oils, you’d be remiss not to try a tasting of this prized Provençal export. The flavors and fragrances of olive oil, known around here as liquid gold, are just as varied and nuanced as any wine, with identifiable floral notes (thanks to the locale’s abundant bouquets of lavender, rose and other blossoms) rounded out by hints of lemon, grass, pepper and herbs. You can experience it for yourself in picturesque Mouriès, beloved for its charming tree-lined streets surrounded by hills, vineyards and, obviously, olive groves. This quaint country village is the largest producer of olive oil in France, courtesy of its 80,000+ trees, and hosts an annual festival honoring the tasty tree fruit every September.
ROSES
In 1783, French artist Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun painted a famous portrait of Marie Antoinette holding a pink centifolia rose, and the blossom has held an air of luxury ever since. It’s the scent of centifolias that helped earn Grasse its reputation as the birthplace of luxe perfumery. Travelers from around the world visit this town set in the hills above Cannes for a whiff of its intoxicating fragrance. In fact, Chanel has infused its signature No. 5 perfume with Grasse centifolias since the 1920s, and the buds continue to inspire today’s top perfumers. Here, flower picking has been raised to an art form, and each familyrun farm has its own method of preserving the petals’ delicate fragrance. Many expats come to learn from these experts or earn a pedigree from the Grasse Institute of Perfumery. Even if you’re just visiting for a week, don’t miss the opportunity to bottle up your own custom scent at one of the many workshops offered in town.
DAUBE
There’s nothing like cool, crisp mountain air to make you crave a hearty bowl of beef stew, and this Alpine destination’s take on the classic comfort food will have your mouth watering. Known as daube, the regional staple originated in the 19th century as a way for poorer populations in the French countryside to make use of tough cuts of meat. First, the beef marinates for at least a day before simmering in an aromatic bath of red wine, garlic and herbes de Provence. The result is an earthy, deeply satisfying meal centered around forkfuls of fall-apart meat that literally melts in your mouth. The dish’s rise in popularity can be attributed to carters (the truckers of 1800s France) who would savor daube at inns and eateries along their route. Today, you can enjoy it as they did — that is, letting someone else prepare it for you. La Fourchette in Avignon has some of the best daube in all of France.

FARE
GONE ARE THE DAYS OF LIVING ENTIRELY OFF THE LAND, BUT THERE IS A GROWING TREND
around foraging for your own food. Minnesota lakes, rivers, woodlands and forest floors offer many edible ingredients to complete a field-to-fork recipe. Delicious options range from wild game and fish to mushrooms, ramps and black raspberries to even some plants typically labeled pesky weeds. When was the last time you whipped up a dandelion salad, for instance? Spring is a great time to forage. There is a learning curve when it comes to hunting and gathering, but that shouldn’t stop you from giving it a try. When foraging, it’s critical to know how to identify edible plant species. Thankfully, there are many local experts who are more than willing to share their knowledge on where to go and how to be safe and successful. Here are four of my favorite wild Minnesota foods that you can harvest yourself (or find in your local grocery store). Happy hunting!
Walleye If you’re unfamiliar with the official state fish, you might not be a true Minnesotan! Considered a holiday here in the North, walleye season opener is eagerly awaited by roughly half a million anglers each year — which tells you just how delicious they are. If you’re new to the sport, the DNR can help you get started or find a fishing guide. The bragging rights for catching this trophy fish are not only because of its size but also for its flavor. The white and flaky fish is so mild and works well in a wide variety of dishes. Many people like the traditional shore lunch preparation, but I think walleye deserves a more gourmet touch.
Wild Rice Although it looks like rice, this native species is actually an aquatic grass seed. One of my favorite ways to use wild rice is grinding it into a flour. This is easily done by first dry roasting the rice in a sauté pan to bring out its flavor then grinding it down to a flour-like consistency in a coffee grinder. You can use it to coat walleye, pheasant or any other fish or poultry. Minnesota residents are allowed to harvest wild rice, but there are strict regulations (including a season, usually in late August and September), license requirements and restricted areas. Or you can support a Native American tribe by purchasing hand-harvested wild rice directly from them; Red Lake Nation Foods even lets you shop online.
Morels Did you know Minnesota has a state mushroom? Morels are considered a delicacy, thanks to their rich nutty flavor. If you haven’t tried them, you’re missing out. With their unique shape, hollow interior and spongy texture, they are somewhat easy to identify. But when it comes to mushrooms, you want to be 100% certain what you’re picking, which is where an identification guidebook comes in handy. There is a thrill to the hunt as finding morels in the woods is akin to spotting a leprechaun. This is why fungi fanatics rarely give up their go-to spots. Prime morel season here is April and May, when the soil is warm and moist. If you’re a mushroom lover, there are 50+ edible varieties found in Minnesota. You can learn how to safely identify and forage for fungi by taking a class with a local expert like Mike Kempenich, aka the Gentleman Forager.
Ramps Otherwise known as wild onions, ramps resemble a green onion with a flavor that’s equal parts garlic and green onion. You can taste the essence of both in a ramp, and the garlic scent is actually how you identify them in the wild. Abundant growth of ramps in woodland areas is indicative of a healthy ecosystem. They are one of the first native plants out of the ground and start popping up in April. As always, it’s important to know what you’re foraging as there are a few ramp look-alikes that are actually toxic. A cluster of coveted ramps will enlighten your senses when added to any springtime recipe. Laura Schara is a lifelong outdoor enthusiast and cohost of the television series Minnesota Bound. ADVENTURE E S S A Y
CONFESSION: I’VE BEEN PULLED ASIDE AT
an international airport due to the inherent danger of unidentified cookware not once, but twice. The first time I got flagged was in 2015. After deciding to take a year-long Asia trip, I was less concerned about what clothes would see me through the humid months than how I was going to make coffee every day. Gritty scoops of Nescafé Gold weren’t going to cut it, so I did what any selfappointed barista would do: stuffed a slim coffee grinder inside a portable AeroPress coffeemaker. In case you’re unfamiliar, an AeroPress functions like an inverted French press, only it’s much smaller and bears an unfortunate resemblance to a pipe bomb when passing through an x-ray machine. When an alarmed security official pointed this out, I proceeded to demonstrate how its hand pump works. He responded with a raised eyebrow and a quizzical look that said, You know you’re a total nerd, right? Indeed I am, especially when it comes to food. It’s why I’ve taken intensive three-day courses on fermentation. Lost hours (nay, years) of my life rooting out must-try restaurants around the world. And treated our dining room like a two-person bistro for decades, complete with daily cookbook selections and rotating specials. An obsession with cooking techniques and totally unnecessary tools also explains why I saw nothing wrong with buying an exquisite copper pot at Istanbul’s centuries-old Grand Bazaar and bearing its burdensome weight on not one but seven flights between Turkey, Georgia and the United States last fall. While most screeners ignored its land mine–like shape, it piqued the interest of one curious worker at the Tbilisi airport. After removing the sweatshirtwrapped rondeau — a wide and shallow wonder normally reserved for serious kitchens — I rattled off the reasons it wasn’t in my suitcase. Namely, that a hasty bag handler might lose or fling my luggage, clobbering its contents in the process. Upon examining the pot’s slick yet sturdy construction, he smiled and said, “I don’t think anyone could dent that thing if they tried.” He’s right. I snagged one of Soy Türkiye’s patented bronze pots because the Istanbul-based company hammers, cuts and polishes every piece by hand. They also line some cooking surfaces with silver, which is practically unheard of in the commercial kitchenware world. Stainless steel or tricked-out tin, sure, but silver? That’s something I’d expect to see in a palace or some Michelinstarred monstrosity. But this culinary prize actually isn’t the reason I visited Soy Türkiye’s closet-sized show room. The brand’s pro line of reasonably priced frying pans was, since they reportedly slay everything from seared meat to stir-fried vegetables. At first, I was gutted to hear that they were sold out the week of my Grand Bazaar visit (the downside of a delicate made-to-order mentality). But then my
192
Artful Living
eyes caught the gleaming frame of that rondeau. The ultimate pot/pan combo, it’s as if a Dutch oven scaled back in size and dressed to impress in the finest materials imaginable: solid copper three millimeters thick, sand-cast solid bronze handles and a proprietary alloy that promises five times the performance of cast iron. The only problem? The cost — a number so unsettling that the sales clerk punched its price into a calculator and slid it over the counter in silence. As much as I enjoy cooking, I rarely spend three figures on food gear beyond heavyweight workhorses like a KitchenAid mixer or a Vitamix blender. And this rondeau was a regal investment nearing a grand (including a matching lid, but still). It wasn’t simply a splurge; it was #treatyoself taken to an illogical extreme, a talking point in a divorce proceeding, the one thing you’d hope to get in a will. And yet, I couldn’t help but rationalize its role in my life with the formidable talking points of Soy Türkiye founder Emir Ali Enç. He went from studying international relations — the family business for seven generations — to becoming Turkey’s leading supporter of copper-based cookware. If you ask Enç why he dropped a diplomatic career for a six-month apprenticeship in Syria, he’ll explain that he’s on a mission to restore and reclaim the coppersmith traditions of countries that have long been overshadowed by Western Europe. Which is really a roundabout way of saying that, yes, I bought it. And no, my kid is not going to be able to attend college 20 years from now. (Sorry bud; the silver-lined pot that heated up homemade meals all week had to come first.) Looking to alleviate any lingering guilt, I decided to ask Serious Eats Culinary Director Daniel Gritzer what he thought about my biggest impulse buy in years. After all, he wrote an in-depth guide to the pros and cons of copper cookware. Surely he would understand. “Holy shit,” his reply began — an emphatic but ambiguous start. “Three-millimeter-thick copper that’s silver-lined? That’s just fucking nuts. Do you need it? No. Does it make everything you cook in it more satisfying and beautiful? Yes. Will it be a family heirloom? Yes. Just don’t, you know, drop a bomb on it.” Does a bag of frozen bulgogi count? Because I did that the other night and it stuck to the rondeau’s surface like Gorilla Glue. Luckily, I was able to remove it with a long soak and a scratch-free sponge, but it still made my heart sink for a second. Which brings me to my final point: If you ever choose to wipe out your savings for a pot, you should actually use it. Don’t be one of those people who puts it on display for all to see and never speaks of it again. Make it as much a part of your culinary life as a spoon or spatula. Or in my case, make that pat-down count.

I can honestly say that on the four-burner electric stove she used throughout my childhood and on the gas hob that replaced it many years later, she has never cooked a bad meal. Not once. The focus of her cooking is Italian, primarily recipes from her family or my father’s family. (However, she was never afraid to branch out into the cuisine of Northern Italy. Her risotto Milanese is still one of the best I have ever tasted.) Over the years, she also perfected a few dishes from other countries, which became staples of her repertoire. One year paella appeared, cooked and served in an elegant orange and white Dansk casserole dish. Brimming with clams, mussels, shrimp, chicken and lobster tails (at the time, lobster was somewhat affordable), it became a special treat for years to come. Crepes made their way onto our table at some point in the early 1970s, no doubt inspired by Julia Child. Light and airy, they were stuffed with chicken in a béchamel sauce and greedily devoured by us all. Rich, thick chili con carne appeared every now and again, speckled with green and red peppers, its meat made unctuous by rich red tomatoes and olive oil. This dish was often specifically made for some neighbor’s annual Super Bowl party. We never threw any such fete, as no one in the house was in any way a football fan. It should be obvious by now that when I was young, my mother spent most of her waking time in the kitchen, and she still does to this day. Cooking for her is at once a creative outlet and a way of feeding her family well. Her cooking, like that of any great cook or chef, is proof that culinary creativity may be the most perfect art form. It allows for free personal expression like painting, writing or musical composition and yet fulfills a most practical need: the need to eat. Edible art — what could be better? Because of my mother’s culinary prowess, eating at neighbors’ houses as a kid was always a bit of a struggle. The meals were bland or just plain not good. However, my friends were more than happy to spend time at our table. They knew the food at our house was something quite special. The ingredients had been carefully chosen or grown according to the season; each dish had a cultural history and was lovingly made. It was not only the food itself in which they delighted but the passion with which it was made and presented, as well as the joy our family took in its consumption. The moans of satisfaction that the meal elicited from us were enough to convince one to enjoy the meal even if one wasn’t already. Between moans, there was the usual discussion of how and why it was all so delicious. “The best you’ve ever made, Joan,” my father would say about one dish or another every night. My two sisters and I would agree as my mother would mutter something about there not being enough salt or something needing more cooking time, or saying, “It’s a little dry, don’t you think?” and so on.
This discourse was followed by stories of previous meals, imagined ones or desired preferences for those to come, and before one knew it, the meal had ended and little else had been discussed other than food. Politics, luckily, were quite low on the list. No matter what one ate, even if it was just cold cuts and olives from a delicatessen, it was elevated to a new level of flavor in my parents’ home. A college friend once said to me when eating prosciutto, bread and cheese in my first apartment in New York City, “Stan, how come even though I buy the same stuff from the same store, it tastes better when I’m at your house?” “You should visit my parents,” was my reply. In Italian families, nothing is discussed, ruminated on or joked about as much as food (except death, but I’ll save that subject for another time), and hence there are quite a few food-related expressions that have been passed down through my family over many generations that I continue to use to this day myself. My father is a voracious eater, and during dinner, while savoring his food (in truth he would be eating it very quickly, as savoring is something neither he nor I practice, although I suppose we are experts in the postprandial savor), my father would inevitably utter the rhetorical question, “My God, what does the rest of the world eat?!” To me, given the quality of the food, it was a more than fair question. When he was told that dinner was soon to be served, he would take a sip of his Scotch, slam the glass on the butcher-block counter and loudly pronounce, “Buono! Perche io ho une fame che parla con Dio!” This translates as, “Good! Because I have a hunger that speaks with God!” God has paid little attention, it seems, to truly sating him, as my father’s biblically proportioned hunger returns every evening. When he was young, my father would, as all children do, ask the question, “Mom, what’s for dinner?” His very sweet mother (sweet by all accounts, for I didn’t know her well as I was only seven when she died) would respond with “Cazzi e patate.” This translates directly as “Dicks and potatoes.” In other words, “Leave me alone” or “Bugger off,” as the Brits might say. In today’s PC climate, a social worker might be brought into a household to oversee parents who spoke to their children this way. One could only hope for a social worker with Italian roots. When we were young, whenever my sisters or I complained about a certain meal my mother had lovingly made, she would suggest rather tersely that we go see what the neighbors were cooking. And that, as they say, put an end to that. The reason being, as I said, having eaten at many of our neighbors’ homes, we had no desire to revisit their tables. In our home each day of the week, a delicious and well-balanced meal appeared from the kitchen, and no matter how much we might gripe about our personal aversions to broccoli, fish, salad or pork chops, we knew how lucky we were. Yet for all of her posturing about insisting we go skulking about the neighborhood to sniff out a better meal when we complained about hers, my mother was very well aware of our individual

likes and dislikes, and she did her best to make, if not a main dish, then a couple of side dishes every night that satisfied everyone. A typical meal might consist of a bowl of pasta with broccoli, breaded veal cutlets with sautéed zucchine on the side, and a green salad. Within that array of dishes there was something for all of us. My sister Christine loved meat, Gina preferred pasta and vegetables, and I ate basically everything that wasn’t nailed down. The next night’s fare might be chicken alla cacciatore with a side of rice, sautéed escarole and cabbage salad, and so on and so on. How my mother turned out these amazing, diverse, healthy meals night after night while having a full-time job is beyond me. By the time Friday rolled around, the household budget had been stretched to its limit, relegating end-of-the-week meals to simple, inexpensive fare. However, given the innate Italian facility to create something substantial out of practically nothing, we hardly suffered. Fridays were often also the only night when my father would cook, in order to give my mother a much-needed rest. She in turn became the sous-chef, facilitating as necessary. A usual Friday night dinner would be one of a handful of dishes that my father was most comfortable preparing. The simplest and most often prepared was pasta con aglio e olio (pasta with garlic and olive oil). My father’s second go-to Friday night dish was uova fra diavolo. For egg-obsessed people like my father and me, nothing could be as desirous as this rich, visually stunning meal. Imagine a deep frying pan of delicate red-orange marinara sauce (made with more onions than usual for extra sweetness), in which six to eight eggs are poached. The result, as its name implies, is positively sinful. This was accompanied by lightly toasted Italian bread and followed by a green salad. The third Friday favorite was fried meatballs. This was a meal my parents would make together, my mother preparing the meatball mixture and rolling them and my father frying them slowly in olive oil. Many meatballs were cooked on a Friday evening, as half were to be eaten that night and the other half were to be used for the Sunday ragù. Those eaten on Friday night were served nude, or in other words, without any sauce at all. They were accompanied by a fresh green salad and Italian bread. It was only when this meal was served that butter made a rare appearance on our table. When spread on Italian bread, it was a sweet and soft complement to the crusty meatballs. I remember those Friday night meals with great fondness, as there was a more relaxed feeling throughout the house. The work and school week had ended, and a weekend spent with friends and the inevitable Friday or Saturday night sleepover lay ahead for me and my sisters, while my parents looked forward to dinner parties at home or away. We knew that Sunday morning’s painfully portentous Catholic mass loomed, but we were well comforted by the thought that the remaining meatballs cooked on Friday evening would be given a new and delicious life in my mother’s ragù that afternoon.

IN AN ANIMATED 1950S WONDERLAND, A CATERPILLAR
sits atop a mushroom and watches on as Alice takes a bite of fungi and grows to the size of a house. Blue-hued Smurfs live in a suburbia of shroom homes. Decades later, popular video game stars Mario and Luigi unlock superpowers by scooping up spotted mushrooms. And in 2022, a shroom boom is alive and well, with fungi’s popularity doubling in size overnight. Mushrooms are the new black, and spores are everywhere. The pandemic’s DIY renaissance helped fuel both a foraging frenzy and an at-home growing craze. But that’s not all. In high fashion, vegan leathers made from fungi mycelium are inspiring top designers. In the wellness world, meanwhile, mushrooms are being bottled and capsuled with plentiful purported benefits. And in our homes, we’re decorating with nature motifs and one day could be insulating our houses with fungi-derived materials. Mushrooms are even being employed in bioremediation to clean up after disasters like wildfires and oil spills. So why now? We’re fascinated with fungi because they’re a symbol of a simpler past — and future. “We’re remembering the things we forgot long ago,” says mycological entrepreneur and influencer William Padilla-Brown. “Foraging isn’t a form of escapism from the pandemic — it’s a reconnection. We’re realizing the future is the same as the ancient past. All things new are things ancient Egyptians used to do.” Author and environmental anthropologist Gina Rae La Cerva agrees. “We want to reexperience a time when being human meant something different than it does today, with the benefit of being able to escape back into the comforts of domesticated civilization whenever we like,” she explains. Mushrooms are sprouting in the depths of our desires because they’re a symbol of vitality and creativity, reminding us what’s possible. As it turns out, the possibilities are pretty endless: The global mushroom market was valued at $58.8 billion last year and will reach an estimated $86.5 billion by 2027, according to market research firm IMARC. Plus fungi are popping up in places you might not expect. New Hope Farmacy in Minnesota is one of the largest indoor mushroom farms across the country. The brick warehouse is so discreet you wouldn’t know hundreds of plants are being expertly cultivated inside, including the rare cordyceps. Difficult to grow commercially, this hyped aphrodisiac carries a price tag north of
$9,000 a pound. New Hope Farmacy CEO Mohamed Sewidan is intent on developing the mushroom hub of the Midwest and one day changing the medicinal mushroom world. The plant-based eating movement is no doubt helping drive demand, spurred on by dual concerns for the environment and our personal health. This is where shrooms shine, with their nutritional value, savory umami flavor and hearty, meat-like texture. Herbivores can score everything from mushroom jerky to beefy patties and “meatballs.” And varieties like shiitake, portobello and king oyster have been popular meat substitutes for decades. Foraging for these earthly delights is not a novel concept, but its resurgence during the pandemic reflects our collective yearning for self-sufficiency and mobility. “We don’t have control over our food systems, so people forage to feel more in control of their food and to access flavors they can’t normally get,” says Rae La Cerva. “It’s grounding and creative during a time that seems restrictive. Humans evolved to be biophilic; we feel better when we’re out in nature. Our brains evolved to forage, find flow and survive.” Mirroring the cycles of nature itself, mushrooms’ popularity periodically blooms. During the height of the Renaissance, for instance, dietetic manuals asserted that the key to a happier existence was eating closer to the source. People rebelled against domestic cooking during the 1800s and went out into the woods to forage for the original prehistoric remedy. Indeed, mushrooms have been exalted as a superfood since the beginning of time, recognized by Greek physician Hippocrates and in Chinese medical texts for their healing properties. And our ancestors were onto something. The power of mushrooms is impressive, with benefits encompassing boosted immunity, increased energy, enhanced mood and more. Nowadays, wellness wares like lion’s mane capsules and shroom-based face serums are all the rage. Self-care fanatics lace their coffee with reishi-cacao mix and sprinkle adaptogenic mushroom protein powder into their smoothies. Plus mushroom compounds are proving effective in helping treat depression in clinical trials. It was only a matter of time before fungi rooted their way into fashion, with top designers like Stella McCartney leading the way. A vegan and prominent animal rights activist, she recently joined forces with Adidas, Lululemon and Gucci parent company

Kering to help develop Mylo, a mushroom leather. McCartney worked alongside scientists to perfect the material’s texture and weight, and last year she revealed the first-ever Mylo garments, a jet-black bustier and utilitarian trousers (modeled by Paris Jackson, no less). McCartney isn’t the only designer under mushrooms’ spell. Spring 2021 couture was all about chanterelles: Rahul Mishra’s collection mimicked shrooms’ shelf-like patterns, while Iris van Herpen was inspired by fungi’s sensual shapes and sprawling underground networks. “During the pandemic, there has been a realization of our own fragility on this planet,” van Herpen told Harper’s Bazaar. “More and more, I started to see couture as a platform for new ideas.” Even leatherloving luxury fashion house Hermès is getting in on the action, unveiling a vegan version of its popular Victoria handbag made with mycelium. Never late to a trend, celebrities are wearing mushroom motifs on their sleeves — quite literally. Model Bella Hadid has been spotted sporting Frasier Sterling shroom earrings and carrying a vintage leather bag etched with fungi designs. Actor and red carpet scene stealer Timothée Chalamet made cottagecore look chic in a custom Stella McCartney mushroom suit for last fall’s debut of the film Dune. Of course, these shroom stylings are nothing new; they hark back to the sixties and seventies, when trippy mushroom motifs were everywhere. The allure? Spores have spunk, jam-packed with mystical symbolism and optimistic eco-friendly flair. In the home, fungi are the new flowers, showcased in furnishings, artwork and the like. Dreamy pastel mushroom lamps had a major viral moment across Instagram last year thanks to social media influencers like Scandinavia’s Pernille Rosenkilde and Simone Noa. And high-end purveyors like Highsnobiety and Mr Porter could hardly keep the Elder Statesman’s luxe cashmere mushroom pouf in stock. But the home shroom boom extends beyond simply decor. Companies like UK startup Biohm are creating biodegradable mushroom-based building materials, such as insulation made from mycelium. Although development is still in the early stages, these eco-friendly alternatives show great promise in helping address climate change challenges. So could mushrooms really be the world savior we’ve been
210
Artful Living
seeking? Maybe. Fittingly dubbed “trendy trash monsters” by The New York Times, fungi thrive on waste. Case in point: Oyster mushrooms soak up heavy metals and break down petroleum hydrocarbons, and they’ve been used to reduce toxic ash runoff from California wildfires. Fungi have also been fashioned into an eco-friendly membrane that could one day be instrumental in providing safer drinking water. Suddenly, magic mushrooms have a deeper meaning. All this helps explain why humans have been fascinated with fungi for centuries. Before beloved children’s book author and illustrator Beatrix Potter penned The Tale of Peter Rabbit, she honed her watercolor skills by creating botanical artwork. Her passion for mycology is reflected in the hundreds of mushroom images she painted. In England, shrooms entered the popular imagination during the 19th century, the first time in modern history that they were viewed as something other than a symbol of decay. And they continue to inspire today. “Mushrooms are very ripe in terms of pushing creative thinking,” notes Rae La Cerva. “The diversity of art and recipes you can make with mushrooms is so incredible. We’ve been looking at this black-andwhite world, but really it’s full of colors and shapes. We can’t capture the complex, stunning quality of the natural world, but we can express the deep unknowable beauty of being alive. Mushrooms are a way to find that inspiration.” In short, these seemingly insignificant organisms have a unifying quality that spans both time and space, their root-like structure a genesis story for human creativity — and perhaps even the earth itself. “Mushrooms are on the roots in all plants, doing a job that’s making everything work,” says Padilla-Brown. “Yeasts in algae go up into the sky and make clouds. Yeasts in our stomachs help us digest. Without fungi, life lacks complexity. We’d probably be on a twodimensional plane.” Our obsession with mushrooms, as it turns out, is only natural. They help us reconnect with the world around us in a purer, more innocent way. They blend a trippy, technicolor nostalgia for the past with an optimistic blueprint for the future. Most of all, they prove that hope blooms in dark places. Today’s shroom boom confirms that spores are here to stay.

“I’m hopeful the future is going to be brighter,” says Ann Ahmed. “I have two little humans, and I want to be a part of creating a brighter future for them. I believe in being a part of that instead of sitting back and waiting for things to happen.” The Twin Cities chef and restaurateur was sponsored to come stateside more than 30 years ago. She grew up in an intergenerational Minnesota household where the kitchen was helmed by her grandmother, who nurtured through food. Fast-forward to spring 2020. By this time, Ahmed already had two popular restaurants to her name, Lat14 Asian Eatery and Lemon Grass Thai Cuisine. But upon traveling to Laos prior to the lockdown, she started dreaming about opening another eatery. One that felt like the Laos she visited, surrounded by chefs and artisans sharing their cuisine and culture. Last fall, Khâluna was born — a community restaurant that Ahmed hopes transport customers to a different place the moment they walk through the doors. The menu is full of Laotian dishes and ingredients that hark back to her childhood full of nurturing food, like the mieng paa she used to wrap with her cousins while they gossiped. There’s also a shop stocked with fair-trade goods she imports from Laos, including a sticky rice basket crafted by an artisan topping 100 years of age. “Sticky rice is a staple in our household, like bread for Westerners,” she explains. “And if this artisan doesn’t pass down this tradition, it will no longer be made.” She realized she could at once help keep the craft alive and share her culture with customers. “If you’re eating my food already, then I can tell you more about my culture,” Ahmed says. “When you have chosen to come into my space, that’s a time for me to share. When we talk about it, we break down these barriers we have.”

Alexandra Spieldoch Bountifield International
Bountifield International CEO Alexandra Spieldoch has a vision, and she can see all the pieces dropping into place. The goal is not a small one: to contribute to Africa’s ability to “feed herself and the world.” Currently, sub-Saharan Africa relies on nearly $40 billion in food imports, a number projected to surpass $100 billion by 2025. “You can see the risk involved in that, in terms of the magnitude and the kinds of shocks we’re seeing in the global economy,” she explains. “A lot of the investment that goes into developing countries, including African ones, tends to be large-scale, multimillion-dollar initiatives — but they’re often not fit to purpose because they misunderstand the problem. Our solution gets between the cracks.” This solution is, essentially, making it easier for people to process, save and sell more food with the help of small-scale investments — $500 to $5,000 — in farming equipment. In other words, empowering farmers with access to tools and services they need after harvesting nutritious, drought-resistant crops like peanuts, sorghum and pearl millet. This not only saves time and energy, it also reduces food loss while increasing output. Ultimately, it helps establish a more resilient food system and sets up African nations such as Kenya, Malawi and Senegal for food independence and security. You don’t have to take Spieldoch’s word for it. According to a 2021 study, every dollar invested in Bountifield generates $6.42. But the return is not measured in dollars alone: Families and communities see improved well-being, increased nutrition, higher incomes and greater economic opportunity — especially among women, who do the majority of the work at a subsistence level, and youth, who need incentive to remain in rural areas currently experiencing an estimated 60% unemployment rate. Spieldoch puts not only her considerable international policy expertise into her work, but also her heart: “I’m 175% passionate about the role I can play in being transformative,” she declares. “I see this work as part of a movement. I’m invested in agency and it taking off for the people we’re trying to serve. Access is a justice issue here, and it’s a justice issue abroad. We’re all trying to stabilize and get to a better future. I want to get to that.”

Meaghan Moakley Azalea Acupuncture & Aesthetics
Meaghan Moakley can interpret the lines in people’s faces. As a licensed and board-certified acupuncturist and owner of the newly opened Azalea Acupuncture & Aesthetics in Edina, it’s part of her job. Face reading, as it’s called, is just one way she makes diagnoses and determines what treatments and food therapies will work best for her patients. “The fine lines next to eyes — what we call crow’s feet — tilt upward and signify laughing and happiness,” she explains. “The ones that go down signify grief and sadness. None of us are without sadness; you wouldn’t be living a full life without it. Lines on your face are not a tragedy.” But they can be indicative of underlying conditions or stagnated emotions that need support. And it’s also alright if you just want to improve the look of your skin with an alternative to Botox or fillers. “Whatever you’re coming in for, I’ll check on your whole-body health, because it affects your skin,” she notes. Back to grief, for example: If those emotions stagnate, it’s going to affect how you look and how you feel. Based on an in-depth intake assessment, Moakley develops an individualized plan that helps tighten skin and boost elasticity — all while addressing underlying causes — by placing needles that create micro trauma. This in turn induces blood flow and collagen production. For those who work the plan, she says, the results can be dramatic, including firmer skin and reduced lines. “We’re lucky to age, and every year is a gift, even if some years are harder than others,” she concludes. “I can help patients embrace their authenticity, their individuality and their diversity. We’re always working on the spirit, soul and mind-body connection and helping patients look and feel like the most authentic, beautiful versions of themselves.”

PUBLISHER’S TAKE SPRING IS THE SEASON I WAIT FOR ALL YEAR. AS
the ice thaws, the rain falls, making good on the promise of trees budding with fresh neon green leaves. Suddenly everything comes back to life. I live for those perfect spring days with sweet lilac- and crab apple blossom– scented air. Sure it’s fleeting, but spring brings so much hope. Somewhere around mid-February as winter really begins to drag, the thought of spring just around the corner is enough to kick the winter blues. It’s a brief burst of energy when everything wakes up and starts again. The first few days above 60 degrees feel like 80, and you can finally shed the layers winter has required, both physically and mentally. Here’s a look at what’s inspiring me this season. After not traveling for two years, it was an absolute treat to spend time at Esmé Miami Beach, a modern yet classic interpretation of Spanish-Mediterranean Revival brought to life by Jessica Schuster Design. Frederic Malle En Passant is one of my favorite perfumes of all time and the best take on lilac ever to be bottled. A blend of Sicily’s finest olive varieties, Baroncini Import & Co. Olive Oil is meant to be displayed in the kitchen and paired with farmers’ market vegetables. Gucci Rouge à Lèvres Voile Sheer Lipstick — it’s Gucci lipstick, need I say more? — gives me that sheer wash of color before a Zoom call, plus I love the floral pattern on my desk. Agua by Agua Bendita is a beautiful Colombian label founded by mom friends Catalina Alvarez and Mariana Hinestroza. Their artisan-crafted clothing blends beautiful floral patterns, stunning embroidery and an ongoing commitment to sustainability.
My very best,
