A LET TER FROM TED TERP, GENER AL MANAGER JAGUAR L AND ROVER MINNEAPOLIS We at Jaguar Land Rover Minneapolis have always prided ourselves in taking great care of our employees and customers and we will continue that tradition, especially in the face of the growing concern regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19). Like so many of you, we have spent the last several days and weeks learning about COVID-19 and how it is impacting our world. For us, that means understanding how it affects our employees, customers, and communities, and how we can do our part to prevent the continued spread of the virus. Our driving force through all of this is to make sure our team members and guests are safe. We will remain open, but you can accomplish many of your necessary transactions by phone or digitally, including: • Shopping our inventory at jaguarlandroverminneapolis.com or contacting our sales team by email, phone or chat, and starting the buying process online • Scheduling a test drive remotely—we will bring our vehicles to you • Completing your sales transaction wherever you feel most comfortable—home, work, or at the dealership • A dedicated service drop off and pick up, allowing you to utilize service while minimizing your interactions at the dealership • Self-checkout for service, where you electronically view your invoice and make service payments online • Responding to any requests that help make our team members and guests feel more comfortable As with most businesses, we are closely following the Centers for Disease Control's guidelines and recommendations, and will continue to provide excellent service, while taking all precautions to keep our vehicles, facilities, and workspaces clean. Smiles are the new handshake here at Jaguar Land Rover Minneapolis. If you have any questions or concerns, please call 763-222-2200. Thank you,

FROM THE EDITORS Hayley Saunders: Last fall when we decided to make this issue our inaugural home issue, we had no idea our homes would be so incredibly important to us right now, taking on the additional roles of workplace, workout studio and sanctuary. As it turns out, now is the perfect time to celebrate all things abode — and the talented architects, builders, designers and other professionals behind the North’s most remarkable residences — all season long. Kate Nelson: When it comes to home, there’s no household name like Martha Stewart. We were able to snag an exclusive Q+A with the iconic tastemaker, in which she reveals how she does it all and the secret to the good life — not to mention sheds some light on that unlikely friendship with Snoop Dogg (we know you’re as curious as we are). (page 190) We also got to chat with famed Top Chef host — and our cover star — Padma Lakshmi for our feature story. The actress, author and activist got candid about everything from women’s rights to immigration reform to her new show that debuts on Hulu this summer. (page 96) HS: As if that’s not inspiring enough, this issue is packed with plenty of at-home inspo, including peeks inside a rustic yet refined family home by Rehkamp Larson Architects, Hagstrom Builder and Martin Patrick 3 (page 160); architect Andrea Swan’s Scandinavian chic cabin on Lake Mille Lacs (page 184); and a stunning Lake Minnetonka cottage crafted by Streeter that took its inspiration from a beloved coral necklace (page 166). Plus we’ve got expert advice for finding your garden style (page 203), a look at the hottest woo-woo home trends (page 39), and the ultimate way to make your home truly feel your own: with a monogram (page 44). KN: Like you, we’ve faced new challenges in recent months, including putting together this very magazine amidst the coronavirus outbreak. But through it all, we remain committed to our mission to entertain and inspire our readers with compelling original content. Now more than ever, we are so thankful you welcome Artful Living into your home to be a fixture on your coffee table, a new addition to the bookshelf or the latest read on your nightstand.

Happy reading,

Kate Nelson Editor-in-Chief

THE MAGAZINE On the Cover Gracing the cover of our inaugural home issue is Top Chef star Padma Lakshmi in the comfort of her one-time New York City apartment. The East Village abode perfectly embodied the international icon’s singular taste, a carefully curated space full of character, global influences, and hand-selected furnishings and collectibles gathered over time. It’s a rare glimpse into the Indian-born American actress, author and activist’s home (aside from her infamous Instagram posts), as she prefers to maintain her privacy. “To me, the idea of home is where you feel most comfortable, where you feel most at ease, where you feel happiest,” she tells Artful Living. “For me, that’s wherever my daughter is. The other thing that makes me feel at home are my books.”

the marshmallow sofa designed by Irving Harper in 1956. Place this midcentury seat in any room today, and you have a symbol of post-war optimism. Those rows of discs that seem to explode right off the metal frame were influenced by the atomic age. This playful and witty design became a prelude to the pop art movement of the 1960s. The sofa was a star lot in a recent high-profile sale at Wright auction house in Chicago. The auction highlighted important and influential designs of the 20th century, with some 320 pieces up for bidding. From benches to bureaus, desks to daybeds, the assortment included furniture by Le Corbusier, Paul Evans and Joaquim Tenreiro. All told, the sale brought in more than $1.4 million, with the marshmallow sofa fetching $10,000. Only 186 of the iconic sofas were produced by Herman Miller before the design was discontinued in 1961, with production resuming again in the 1980s. Wrapped in vintage Alexander Girard upholstery, the piece that sold at auction is one of the originals made between 1956 and 1961. “The marshmallow is an absolute classic and an icon of American midcentury design,” explains CEO Richard Wright. A seat with a more sober aesthetic, a 1956 office chair designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright attracted special interest with its industrial, space-age vibe. The piece was made for Price Tower in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, with Wright conceiving both the building and the furniture within to create harmony inside and out. “The Price Tower chair is from Wright’s only realized skyscraper,” notes Richard Wright (no relation). “The chair is one of Wright’s best designs from his late period.” The most unusual chair features sloping leather-clad arms and a broad base. Its variegated green-striped upholstery reflects the architect’s affinity for nature. Wright’s furniture is famously hardedged with strict, no-nonsense lines, leading him to admit in his 1954 book, The Natural House, “All my life, my legs have been banged up somewhere by the chairs I have designed.” The singular seat sold for $11,250. A pair of 1955 teak, cane and upholstered benches by Swiss architect Pierre Jeanneret sold for $31,200, more than twice the auction estimate. They were from the M.L.A. Flats building in Chandigarh, India, a collection of civic structures he helped conceive in the 1950s. With their simple V-shaped legs, the benches were crafted for durability. They perfectly embody Jeanneret’s minimalistic aesthetic, with an emphasis on simple forms. Finally, there was intense bidding for a very Zen-looking bed designed by George Nakashima. Made of Persian walnut, the 1974 Conoid headboard and platform bed feature an overhang with a natural edge, along with sliding doors to conceal storage. Nakashima believed the tree determined the form his furniture would take. He often highlighted the imperfections of wood, purposely choosing boards with knots and cracks, which he would stabilize with butterfly joints. The bed sold for $27,500 — more than double its auction estimate — making for sweet dreams indeed.

Simple. Sophisticated. Modern. Historical. They’re not contradictions, they’re a palette.

At TEA2, we’ve never designed the same house twice. There’s no cookie cutter in our drawer, no single style in our portfolio. What we’re truly best at? Blending different styles and schools of architecture into a home that looks and feels exactly right. A home that creatively solves your and your partner’s needs and wants, as disparate as they may be, in a breathtaking way. A home that continues to give you joy, decades after you move in. We partner with homeowners in many different ways—often, from concept to completion. Other times, we come in after a builder has already been selected. But the result is always beautiful: a home that embraces the landscape, the views, the light, and the people who live in it. Every day. Visit TEA2architects.com to learn more

WE’VE ALL BEEN SPENDING A LOT MORE TIME AT HOME

lately, which means there’s never been a better time to enhance the health of our abode — and in turn ourselves. Ready to try your hand at a little woo-woo? From the wellness benefits of color therapy and crystal healing to the moodboosting practices of feng shui and spiritual smudging, here’s the latest crop of home trends that aim to keep us happy and healthy within our four walls.

FENG SHUI

Grounded in common-sense practices that make your home — and its inhabitants — both healthier and more organized, the ancient Chinese practice of feng shui counts Oprah, Gwyneth Paltrow and Meghan Markle among its fans. One of the most important principles in the art of feng shui is the commanding position, which governs how you are positioned in life and sets you up to receive positive energy. At home, the commanding position in any room is the spot farthest from the door and not in direct line with it, but still with a clear sightline to it. A simple trick? Remember that the commanding position is where you want to spend most of your time when you are in that space and work backward from there.

COLOR THERAPY

While most of us are generally drawn to certain colors for aesthetic reasons, more and more homeowners and designers are turning to color to create a specific feeling — think calm, energetic, romantic or creative — within a space. Warm hues like red, orange and yellow tend to excite and stimulate, while cool tones like blue, green and white typically soothe and restore. Want to liven up your kitchen for family meals? Consider a spirited sunny yellow. Prefer to chill with some takeout instead? Try a serene and tranquil soft gray. Mix and match by finding shades that play well with others to ensure you’ll always feel right at home, no matter your mood.

CRYSTAL HEALING

From healing rituals to divination practices to spiritual attunement, gemstones have long been used to restore and enhance physical, mental, emotional and spiritual equilibrium. When translated to interior design, crystals bring the power of nature indoors, absorbing, emitting, transforming and grounding energy. Try placing crystals like rose quartz in your bedroom for love, citrine in your office for wealth, fuchsite in your bathroom for relaxation, amethyst and black tourmaline in your entryway for protection, and selenite in spots where energy tends to stagnate, like closets and under the sofa. In addition to the wellness benefits, a well-placed crystal does double duty as decor, adding a sculptural element to any space.

LIGHT THERAPY

Designed to address the negative mind and body effects of artificial lighting — which impacts everything from sleep-wake cycles to hormone regulation — new lighting brands are using sciencebacked technological innovation to enrich everyday well-being. Take Brilli, which recently introduced a first-of-its-kind collection of bulbs and fixtures that promises to improve circadian health and reduce eye strain while still offering premium light quality and energy efficiency. Or consider the smart bulbs from Philips and Samsung that can help sharpen your attention in the office or cue winding down before bed with varying brightness. It’s time we see the light, so to speak.

SPIRITUAL SMUDGING

The practice of smudging, or burning fat, leafy bundles of dried sage, is one rooted in ancient Native American tradition and is thought to promote healing, wisdom and longevity. Some even say this cleansing ritual is the best — and easiest — way to rid your home of negativity. To start, experts advise, find a tranquil spot in your house and create an altar with personal, purposeful objects. Purify the air and bring positive energy to the space by lighting palo santo sticks or white sage bundles, then close your eyes, and consciously try to connect with the core of your being. By mindfully creating meditative, thoughtful moments, you can slow down, feel more grounded and reflect on the positive things in life.

EMBROIDERED MONOGRAMS ARE

a hallmark of good taste and personal style that date back hundreds of years. During the Middle Ages, they were widely used as a signature since most kings and emperors were not able to sign their names. In the 18th century, it became common to mark your linens in order to identify them as laundering was a collective, communal task. In the 19th century, the bourgeoisie was eager to show off its success and power, and monograms became a status symbol. Then in the 1950s, sewing machines brought them back in vogue as a handsome way to embellish your home. Today, monograms are re-emerging as a refreshing layer, adding elegance to any decor. While historically identified as a motif of two or more letters, today’s monograms are stretching the boundaries of traditional formats with clean lines and personal designs. A monogram should appear as a single, cohesive unit, even if the letters are not joined. Following old-school rules of traditional points of view exudes integrity, while using some color adds a touch of modernity. If you want something unique, play with size and placement. There are simple rules of etiquette for monogram designs. For three-letter monograms, a married couple’s should read: wife’s first initial, married last initial as the predominant letter, and husband’s first initial. A modern touch for married couples is a duogram featuring just first initials, wife then husband, of the same size. For a single male, the initials are ordered first, last and middle, all of the same size. For a single female, they should read first, last and middle, with the last initial larger. There are further etiquette guidelines suggesting that barware bear the gentleman’s monogram and table linens don the lady’s monogram. While this decorum may seem outdated, knowing when and where to properly use a monogram is a beautiful layer of polish. Pick a monogram that speaks to you; you cannot go wrong. Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, have broken with centuries of royal tradition by separating the letters in their duogram, as “WC” is the standard for water closet in many European countries. Have fun with it and add a personal touch to your home that only a monogram can bring.

SUMMER IS A TIME OF ESCAPE. WE WANT TO BREAK FREE FROM

obligations and head outside. Sartorially speaking, we want to look at ease as we open the next bottle of Chablis. We need to a strike a balance, however, because quite often we are asked to go to a wedding, an important meeting or any place where responsible adults are forced to adult against their will. All of a sudden, the madras shorts aren’t going to hack it. One of the questions I get asked most often is: What should I wear to a summer wedding? Well, let’s consider that. My feeling is that a wedding is the last place you want to be underdressed. In general, you should have stopped trying to get away with being casual by your 15th birthday. It’s a wedding, which means a coat and tie, possibly a suit. If you’re obsessive like I am, don a linen suit in a muted tone. Khaki, olive, tobacco, even chocolate brown — these flatter most men and look great with a pale blue or pink dress shirt (or any pastel, for that matter). It’s not always easy to find this kind of suit. You can have one made by the great New York City tailor J. Mueser, who made my favorite one. Or you can do a deep dive online at Mr Porter. A dark blue linen sports coat is a very wonderful thing. Wear it a few times and embrace the wrinkles, which convey a sense of relaxation (which are very different from unwanted creases). This blue coat can be worn with any light-colored trousers. Cream linen has a certain patrician elegance and is very flattering. What about other traditional summer options? I like an interesting seersucker; blue on blue is very smart, and cream and brown is also lovely. You can usually find one of these by Ralph Lauren. If there’s a classic blue and white that’s been sitting in your closet for years, break it out. If you want to wear it in a more casual way, throw it in the washer and dryer, and wear it every day for a week. Make it your uniform. It plays as well with a Lacoste shirt as it does with an oxford. Summer is a good time to unwind and abandon structure; the last thing anyone wants in the heat is buttoned-up, form-fitting clothing. Shirts with soft collars are perfect, as opposed to the stiff collars of the dressiest dress shirts. Sports coats should have natural shoulders (leave the pads behind) and drape easily. You want to convey that you have just been on the Amalfi Coast, not at a meeting at Parliament. The key for good summer dressing is a sense of freshness. That means a bold art deco–patterned tie with a blue and white striped shirt. I’m a longtime lover of white bucks; my favorite pair of Aldens is on the cover of my book, for goodness sake! White bucks belong on green lawns and patios. They communicate the welcome warmth of summer. But they’re not the only option. What about a great pair of Crockett & Jones cordovan loafers? Head to Martha’s Vineyard, no socks needed. Summer also means sun, which in turn means a good straw hat — and one with a real brim. I strongly advise against a fedora unless you want people to think you’re in a boy band on a reunion tour. Better to get a proper straw hat (ideally inherited from a grandfather) and wear it to the point that it gets beaten up. If it still looks too new, tossing it in the lake for a few hours should do the trick. Having grown up in Minneapolis, I was not an expert on warm weather, so I looked south for guidance from men who’ve mastered this art. It’s no surprise that the great men’s store Ben Silver on King Street in Charleston, South Carolina, has a wonderful array of linen sports coats, bucks, tortoiseshell sunglasses and everything else you could need for iced tea on the front porch. What about Naples, Italy, where men think nothing of wearing a mustard linen suit as they get on their Vespa? Legendary Italian tailor Rubinacci is the go-to for an unlined sports coat in a daring hue. In the end, men in these places see the weather as a chance to express themselves. Weather happens to us all; the secret of style is not to let the heat have the last word. START WITH ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL

islands in the West Indies, add a highly acclaimed worldclass spa and you wind up with the most compelling all-inclusive adults-only resort in the Caribbean. Situated on St. Lucia, BodyHoliday pioneered the concept of vacations centered around wellness, selfcare and tailor-made athletic programming. With year-round tropical temperatures and cooling trade winds, St. Lucia is the kind of tropical paradise dreams are made of. The island offers unique natural features like lush landscapes, pristine sandy beaches and picturesque volcanic mountain peaks. BodyHoliday recently debuted a new level of luxury with its Oasis Villas, five-star lodging with remarkable panoramic views and personal concierge services. Accommodations include Villa Aurora and Villa Calypso, two-story dwellings with a penthouse on the ground level and a junior suite on the upper level. Penthouses boast beautiful verandas with direct access to private infinity pools from the living and bedroom areas. The resort caters to every wellness whim with an everchanging calendar of programming. Daily massages are covered in the all-inclusive rate, letting guests choose from a variety of massages, body wraps, facials and other treatments offered in the massive temple-like spa reminiscent of the Alhambra in Granada, Spain. There’s a focus on Ayurvedic medicine, one of the world’s oldest comprehensive healing systems that employs therapeutic concepts from India to cleanse the body and restore balance. Additional holistic specialists offer Chinese and Bhutanese therapies like acupuncture. Guests are inspired to stay active with 40+ daily activities and group exercise classes, including yoga, Pilates, cycling, fencing, tennis, archery and watersports. BodyScience is an elective offering that provides a health consultation from a licensed physician based on biochemical and physiological information gathered from a guest. It employs state-of-the-art technology and noninvasive diagnostics to assess a variety of factors — from circulation to heart health to nutrient, hormone and stress levels — and make recommendations for living better. Six onsite restaurants boast cuisine made from locally sourced foods and ingredients fresh from the property’s organic garden. Standouts include main dining room Cariblue, informal Pavilion Grill at the Clubhouse, tasting-menu eatery Windows, and finedining sushi and Asian-Caribbean fusion restaurant Tao. Sommeliers guide the selection of fine wines from an exclusive cellar. BodyHoliday is popular with solo guests, and singles are welcome at hosted communal tables within each restaurant. Ital, meanwhile, is an organic farm-to-table dining experience that takes place nestled away behind the resort amongst a canopy of trees with panoramic water views. The concept is rooted in the principles of the celebrated Rastafari diet movement of Jamaica. Participants enjoy a guided tour of the garden, where they help harvest fresh produce, then subsequently assist chefs in the preparation of vegan feasts. BodyHoliday has been recognized as one of the world’s best destination spas by such authorities as Condé Nast Traveler and most certainly delivers on its signature promise: Give us your body for a week, and we’ll give you back your mind.

Owned by the family of the former Keeper of the Royal Privy Purse of the three kings of Greece since 1958, it has a certain celebrity appeal, counting the Beatles and Winston Churchill among its illustrious guests. HAMPTONS AN INSIDER’S GUIDE TO THE NEW YORK SUMMER DESTINATION’S MUST-VISIT SPOTS. BY W E N DY L U B OV I C H

Smell the Coppertone! If you’re looking for a 1970s surfer vibe, this is the spot. Hidden in a residential neighborhood, this beach boasts the most consistent waves with the longest break. Onlookers wear tie-dyed shirts, and beach umbrellas ripple in the breeze. You’ll see seasoned professionals here, but beginners are welcome, too. It’s like being dropped into your own vintage surfer movie.

Hamptons. It was some 20 years ago, during a weekend visit to Amagansett. By chance one morning, I drove down a leafy lane and there it was: a vintage cottage with gray shingles. The front door was painted a sunny yellow, and tumbling all around were tangles of puffy blue hydrangeas in full bloom. I was bewitched. There was something timeless about the setting — the dappled light, the sea air — and the sheer optimism of that yellow door. It seemed to contain the very essence of the Hamptons and the promise of a perfect summer day. Now years later, I have my own little abode in the Hamptons, where the charming villages, beautiful beaches and alluring attractions continue to inspire me. When friends visit, I like to show them the hidden Hamptons: intriguing places I’ve collected over the years. In fact, I have put them all together in a new book, 111 Places In The Hamptons That You Must Not Miss. Come along on a treasure hunt through the East End of Long Island and the Hamptons may just bewitch you, too.

Glasses clink in cheers. But be forewarned: These special nights sell out quickly, so claim your spot early.

CAMP HERO STATE PARK Montauk

This may be the most curious state park in all of America. You are perched high on a hill, taking in the heart-stopping views of the ocean. But this former military base is also ground zero for conspiracy theories like the Montauk Project, tales of government experiments dealing with mind control and time travel. In fact, the Netflix cult hit Stranger Things is said to have been inspired by this very park.

THE BIG DUCK Fla nd e r s

He’s big and quirky, and he lords over traffic in this tiny hamlet. You can visit the small store built into his belly or marvel at his eyes made from the taillights of a Ford Model T. Built in 1931, it was the brainchild of a local duck farmer who was inspired by a California diner in the shape of a coffee pot. Now every December, locals light the duck up and sing bird-themed carols.

SEVAN BIÇAKÇI

Turkish jeweler Sevan Biçakçi is known the world over as the king of rings. His last name means “blade smith,” and his intricate, fantastical designs are inspired by Byzantine and Ottoman styles with motifs like snakes, locks and daggers appearing regularly. Visit his atelier on a quiet side street just a few blocks from the Grand Bazaar for a glimpse of some of his masterpieces. Biçakçi is best known for his intaglio technique, a type of engraving that creates the effect of depth inside a stone, as if he’s trapped an entire animal within a gem. Each year, he makes only a couple dozen one-of-a-kind haute couture pieces, like the octopus bracelet Whoopi Goldberg wore to the 2016 Academy Awards. The tentacles seemed to undulate as she moved her fingers as though she had a live octopus on her hand. And she is in good company in Biçakçi’s celebrity fan club, along with Celine Dion, Halle Berry, Mariah Carey and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Dine as the Ottoman sultans did at majestic Çiragan Palace along the Bosporus. Begin with a colorful platter of mezze including delectable hummus, muhammara and various seasonal delicacies marinated in olive oil. Many of Executive Chef Sezai Erdogan’s dishes are based off historic recipes recorded in the archives of Topkapi Palace, including the traditional Anatolian method of slow cooking meat in sealed clay pots that are then shattered tableside with panache to reveal tender chunks of lamb. During the reign of Mehmed the Conqueror, pan-fried Black Sea turbot was a favorite, flavored with roasted Aegean herbs and saffron. Today, it’s an Istanbul delicacy and a standout dish here. Plus the produce for his ginger vegetable casserole, another menu highlight, was grown in the palace gardens. Ingredients like pomegranate, yogurt, sumac and Antep pistachios add vibrant accents to every bite. Dinner concludes with baklava, oven-baked mastic pudding and a selection of Turkish cheeses for a sweet and savory end to a grand feast.

Founder Florian Kaps saved Polaroid from going extinct, and at Supersense, he has the world’s largest instant camera available for guests to take poster-size photos. There are also 8-by-10-inch Polaroids plus the option to print an instant photo from your phone. Purchase a flipbook kit to create your own analog video or animation, or try a smell memory kit to activate your olfactory powers. Learn to make letterpress posters and business cards or carve a custom rubber stamp. Many of the more exclusive and interactive offerings require advanced booking. You can walk in and make a simple vinyl recording, for example, but plan ahead to rent the sound studio. The adjacent slow-food cafe is simple but sublime.

KONSTANTIN FILIPPOU

Ingredient-driven fine dining is the name of the game at Konstantin Filippou, where minimalist decor in the dimly lit dining room keeps your attention squarely on the artfully plated food. Friendly servers present intricate starters like celery and cockles arranged concentrically like an extraterrestrial flower. Many dishes appear simple at first glance, but dip into the foam around a piece of unagi eel or crack the thin chocolate shell atop ginger ice cream, cherry and green apple brunoise to reveal surprising layers of flavors, textures and temperatures that ingeniously intertwine. And be sure to sop up every last drop of buttery citrus sauce accompanying the Croatian langoustine with malty dark bread. Open for dinner service, the two-star Michelin restaurant offers six- and eight-course tasting menus. For the wine pairing, you can choose between beguiling Austrian varietals or an international selection. And just next door is sister eatery O Boufés, a more casual bistro and wine bar.

YOU THINK PADMA LAKSHMI’S

only place is in the kitchen, you clearly haven’t been paying attention. Sure, the 49-year-old Indian-born American actress, author and activist is best known for her role as host and judge on Bravo’s Top Chef, but she’s so much more than that. A little history: Her parents divorced when she was 2, and her mother immigrated to the United States to escape the stigma. Lakshmi lived with her maternal grandparents for two years before rejoining her mom in New York City. She spent much of her young life traveling between America and India, existing somewhere between two vastly different cultures. When she was 14, her family was in a horrific car accident; they survived but not without some scars, like the seven-inch-long one on Lakshmi’s right arm that has become her brand statement. While studying abroad in Spain in the nineties, she was spotted by a modeling scout, which led to a lucrative career working for the likes of Armani, Versace and Ralph Lauren and ultimately propelled her to become the first internationally successful Indian supermodel. Soon she branched out into acting, but that was all really just a precursor to her success as a cookbook author. Which in turn was the perfect precursor to her role on Top Chef, now in its 17th season. (Keeping up?) All the while, Lakshmi has proven she’s as brazen as she is beautiful, championing issues like women’s and immigrants’ rights. In recent years, her voice has become stronger on both fronts amid the current political climate and as she strives to set an example for her 10-year-old daughter,

98

Artful Living

Krishna. Today, she’s a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador as well as an ACLU spokesperson. After all, it seems she can’t move a muscle without the whole world watching, so why not use all that attention to effect some change? That’s a driving force behind her latest project, a television series called Taste the Nation that premieres on Hulu this summer. In it, Lakshmi visits indigenous and immigrant communities across the country to break bread with her fellow Americans and to reveal the relationship between our food, our humanity and our history. It’s a magnum opus of sorts for the international icon who’s spent a lifetime wrestling with ideas of identity and belonging. She spoke to us from her New York City home (where she’s pictured here), getting candid about everything from comedy to immigration reform to notions of beauty. And if you can’t stand the heat, you best get out of Padma Lakshmi’s kitchen. Kate Nelson: You’ve lived in New York City for a great deal of your life. What is it about the Big Apple that feels like home? Padma Lakshmi: New York City was my first introduction to America. It was a beautiful welcome because in the streets I saw people of all colors, wearing different outfits, clearly from different parts of the world. While I was still feeling like a foreigner, an immigrant, an outsider, there were so many people I could point to even as a young child who looked completely different, too. I didn’t feel as much like an outsider in New York City as I think I might have if I had landed somewhere else first. I love the diversity here; it makes for a much more interesting life, both culturally and gastronomically. It’s also a great place to raise kids. I don’t think I could live anywhere else. KN: What does the idea of home mean to you? And how have you created a home for yourself and your daughter? PL: To me, the idea of home is where you feel most comfortable, where you feel most at ease, where you feel most relaxed and happiest. For me, that’s wherever my daughter is. KN: What are some of the lessons you’ve learned after 17 seasons of Top Chef? PL: That’s a big question. [laughs] What makes the show really great is the chefs who are so passionate about what they do. They treat it like a calling, which it has to be because the hours are so long and you really have to love it to want to make a career out of food. No matter how many seasons of Top Chef I do, I always marvel at how hard these chefs work not just because they want to win, but because they want to challenge themselves. You don’t compete on Top Chef

if you are afraid of a challenge and just want to get by. So just watching the chefs compete has taught me a lot. Another reason the show is a success is because everybody gets along so well. Who you work with really matters. I don’t know that I have any great pearls of wisdom, but one thing that’s clear is that nobody does it alone. After so many years doing Top Chef together, we have a shorthand between us. Everybody understands the role they play and appreciates the parts others play. Your team is very important, and you want to function like a well-oiled machine. KN: Your new series, Taste the Nation, debuts on Hulu this summer. What was the inspiration behind this show? PL: I’m an immigrant, and I’d never really thought much about the immigration story beyond my own. But then, after the 2016 presidential election when immigrants were singled out and discriminated against — whether it was a Muslim man or people at the border who were detained — it really made me upset. So I wanted a way to tackle that. The idea for the show actually started out as a cookbook. In doing research for that cookbook and writing the proposal, I just got deeper and deeper into it, then I shared it with my producing partner. We were supposed to do a different show about immigration, not about food. But that’s what I became interested in. And from a food standpoint, the most exciting developments are what’s happening in these little mom-and-pop restaurants. In food, things don’t trickle down; trends actually trickle up. So that made me wonder: Why are we vilifying these people when they built our country and we don’t mind eating their food? We somehow have a disconnect between the food we’re eating and the people who are making that food. So I wanted to look at that. And now of course, as if immigrants working and cooking in these small restaurants didn’t have enough hurdles to jump just to be able to live and work in America, so many of their livelihoods now hang in the balance because of the coronavirus. The restaurant industry has been one of the hardest hit in this pandemic; more than eight million people have lost their jobs. My hope is that on the other side of this, we will be able to rebuild from the ground up a more equitable industry that appreciates the labor of those working in restaurants as well as the need for high-quality produce. I hope that people will place even more value on the special experience of dining out rather than taking it for granted and always expecting it to be a cheap commodity. I’m very proud of this show. It’s something I’ve worked really hard on for more than two years. It was a real labor of love. And I’m really excited for people to see it. I’m very

thankful that Hulu saw fit to greenlight it, because it’s a very important issue that is not going to go away. Plus it’s very timely. KN: You were named a U.N. Goodwill Ambassador last year. What do you hope to accomplish in this role? PL: My role with the United Nations is specifically with the Development Programme. It’s looking at development through the lens of equality, which I don’t think we’ve done before, at least not in a profound way. We talk about microloans and about getting food or supplies or education to people in need. But often the reason these people are in need of those things is a cultural reason at the local level that discriminates against certain bodies of the population. In many third-world countries, this shows up as a product of misogyny, chauvinism and a lack of equal rights for women — property rights, hereditary rights, things like that. And so it’s really looking at very hard-nosed economic development through this lens of equality. KN: As an immigrant who was separated from your parents for two years, you often use your platforms to champion immigrants’ rights. What changes would you like to see on this front? PL: I think we have to start small before we can go big, and we have to look within the borders of our own country. History is written by the winners, and we don’t want to admit certain truths about the history of this country. One big truth is that immigrants built this nation, whether they were Scottish, Italian, German, Chinese. Throughout all the different generations and waves of this country’s history, you will see again and again that America needed people from different countries to come here, whether it was to domesticate the land or to build the railroads. In the seventies, there weren’t many medical professionals here, so a lot of doctors and nurses came over from India. Which is how my mom got here — she’s a nurse — as well as many of my uncles and aunts who were doctors. There’s always a historical reason why certain groups of people have come to this country en masse, and it’s high time we recognize how much we needed them at that time and how much they’re vital to the economy and the evolution of this nation. As time goes on, the world will become a much more migratory place, by choice or by need because of climate change, because of crop failure, because of war, because of disease as we’re seeing now. So on this issue, I think we just have to treat each other better, regardless of the god you pray to, the language you speak, the food you eat or the clothes you wear. At the end of the day, whether we’re Chinese or Russian or Guatemalan, we all

“We just have to treat each other better, regardless of the god you pray to, the language you speak, the food you eat or the clothes you wear.” want the same things. We all want to make sure our kids are safe. We want to make sure they are fed and have a good education. We want to provide for them. We want to have a home for them. We want to live peacefully and in harmony. We want to be able to take care of our parents in their old age. Those kinds of values are human values that transcend nationality, religion and political inclination. And if we look at those values, we realize there’s so much more that connects us than separates us. So we have to have that kind of attitude when we are creating policy. I’m not so crazy that I believe we should open all the borders and everyone should just come and go as they please. I do believe in immigration reform; I do believe in a process. But I believe in a humane policy that allows for every sector of the economic makeup of the world to be let into this country in certain numbers. We have to take a broader minded view about that given the history of this country. KN: You are also an outspoken advocate for women’s rights and protested for the first time in the 2017 Women’s March on Washington alongside your daughter. What

example do you want to set for future generations of women? PL: What’s important is the knowledge that your actions determine your future, which can seem like a futile philosophy. Honestly, four years ago, if you had told me I was going to be very outspoken like this, I wouldn’t have believed you. Sure, I donated to Obama’s campaign; I even campaigned a bit for him. But I wasn’t one of those people you would see on the protest lines at the drop of a hat. I had never demonstrated before. Things just got so bad that I felt I had to do something out of my responsibility as a parent, to say, This is not OK. Because I saw a lot of the things my mom fought for in her generation, when I was my daughter’s age, being threatened all over again: our right to choose, our right to reproductive health, our right to equal pay for equal work. Just by the very fact that my mother divorced my father — it was so taboo to have a divorce in India and you were ostracized — I saw her break barriers within her own life. She worked full time and raised me alone, mostly. She went to night school to get her master’s degree, and she couldn’t afford childcare, so I often went with her. I just sat quietly in the back of the classroom and colored. And so all her efforts to change her destiny in a very real, palpable way made a really big impression on me. She didn’t have the privilege of having extra time on her hands to go march on Washington, but her very existence was a fight for equality and equal opportunity for herself every day. There’s an expectation when a man starts a family that there’ll be childcare, and that childcare is usually borne by the person who’s already borne the child for nine months. That’s not the expectation if you’re a woman. If you’re a woman, you somehow have to make it all work. You have to have as much career ambition as your male counterpart, but you also have to be a great mother. Our notions of what a great mother is and what a great father is are really different. We sometimes applaud fathers — and we should — for doing what mothers have been doing forever. And so, if we don’t act like we have a voice in our own destiny, we really won’t. That’s what I want to show younger generations of women: that you can do something. You may start behind, you may not start on equal footing with your male counterparts, but that is all the more reason to fight for what you want and not sit idle. KN: In 2018, you chose to come forward about being raped as a teenager with an essay in The New York Times. Why was it important to speak up after so many years of silence? PL: Because I thought it was something that most rape victims don’t want to talk about. It all happened very quickly. It was

Summer 2020

101

FEATURE a Friday night during Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation hearings, and there was a tweet from the president asking why, if it was so bad, didn’t Christine Blasey Ford report it all those years ago. But if you look at what happens to survivors who do speak out, especially about a powerful man who is up for a Supreme Court nomination, none of it is good and you wind up being traumatized all over again. So any smart woman would think really long and hard before opening her mouth. Sometimes your own survival — mental, physical, economic — propels you more than doing what’s right. It doesn’t mean that what happened to you is any less devastating or traumatic or completely life-altering. I know for a fact that I would have been much less insecure, that I would have conducted my life in a different way had that not happened to me. I resented the president using the fact that she hadn’t come out before as evidence that it wasn’t actually true. Nobody actually knows. There are two, maybe three people in the world who know whether Brett Kavanaugh did what Dr. Ford says he did. But regardless, we should make it easier for women and men — it happens to men, too — who’ve been through this to come forward. And I just felt like, since I’m now in a position where I feel secure, where I make my own money, where I have a business, where I’m a mother, that I’m in a different position than that scared 16-yearold girl being raised by a single mom. I was just tired of people telling women that their lives aren’t as important as men’s lives. Because that’s really what it is. At that time, people were saying horrible things like, “You’re going to ruin a man’s life for something that happened when he was in high school?” But what about her life? There’s not one day that you don’t think about it. It never goes away. It’s like an iron shackle on your soul. We treat rape like it’s not something serious, but it is the most serious of crimes. It is literally the murder of your innocence. Because once you are violated physically, you are never the same. You are never totally relaxed. You are never totally free in the way a person who hasn’t had that happen to them is. There’s always this lingering fear in the back of your mind, even if it’s not conscious anymore, about every date you go on, about every person you’re interested in, that affects the way you move through the world at night, that affects the way you talk to your child about sexuality. KN: Afterward, you had people approaching you to commend you and to share their own story. What was that like? PL: At first, it was scary. I didn’t go out for three days after I wrote the article. Kavanaugh’s hearings were really triggering, which is what made me write the piece in the first place. But when I did go out, I walked literally half a block to my gym and

102

Artful Living

people were coming up to me, even coming into the gym. It was jarring, and I felt like crying because it made it real. Up until then, I hadn’t really left my home. I could look at it online, but I wasn’t going online. It was very difficult emotionally. When you rip off a 32-year-old Band-Aid, it is devastating. Then after a while, it got easier and easier. I don’t regret writing that piece. It was a very healing moment for me to be able to say out loud something that I had never even said to my own mother. KN: Your own painful experience with endometriosis prompted you to cofound the Endometriosis Foundation of America in 2009. What are some of your proudest achievements with this nonprofit? PL: I’m very proud of the partnership with MIT and Harvard Medical School. Very early in our evolution as an organization, we were able to help launch the MIT Center for Gynepathology Research, which has developed biological models to study the disease. Also, there are now a couple drugs on the market, and just the fact that they exist is quite an achievement — because when we first started, people couldn’t even say endometriosis, let alone know what it is. I’m also really proud of our education program. We go into Boys & Girls Clubs, middle schools, and high schools to teach about endometriosis in science classes. We don’t want to go into health classes even though it’s clearly a health issue because we don’t want to sexualize it. It’s a common occurrence in your body if you’re a girl or woman of childbearing age, but it’s a scientific ailment. So we wanted to attack it free from any stigma that exists with issues like that. I remember riding along on one of these seminars at a school on the Upper West Side, and after the presentation was over, a little boy raised his hand and asked, “If you think somebody has it, what should they do?” And I explained, “You can go on our website and look for a specialist in your area.” And he said, “Hearing what you’re describing, I think my mom has it and I want to get her help.” That was a beautiful moment for me, because that means that young boy hopefully will turn out to be a loving partner, a caring sibling, a helpful colleague, somebody who understands these issues and will know to look out for them. That’s why we wanted to talk to both boys and girls at the same time. Nobody wants to talk about their period — it’s a very icky subject, right? But it’s the very nature of human life. That is where we all come from. We all come from a woman’s womb, and we need to destigmatize it. KN: Early on in your modeling career, famed photographer Helmut Newton saw beauty in your now trademark scar on your right arm. How did that help you learn to love your body?

PL: We all see ourselves through the opinions of others, especially as women, because we are trained to do that. We get indications from all parts of the world, whether it’s our parents, our peers, magazines, books, television, film. And so it’s hard not to determine your self-worth by what you’re comparing yourself to. For the first time, this really respected, highly successful artist whose opinion carried weight saw beauty in my scar. He actually thought it was one of the most interesting things about me and that it set me apart. Then all of a sudden, everybody else started treating me differently. I was no different; my scar hadn’t changed appearance because this photographer shot it. But it changed my opinion of myself and it gave me an understanding of how arbitrary our notions of beauty are. I remember when I was a child going back and forth between America and India in the seventies and eighties that it was not desirable to be skinny in India. If you look at the Indian movie stars even from the nineties, they’re all very round and plump; they look like fertility goddesses. Then I would come here and see all these super thin girls. So I always straddled two different notions of beauty. And when that happened with Helmut, it made me realize that beauty is just what you think it is. It’s what you give value to. One person’s beauty is another person’s ugliness. KN: You’re a big comedy fan. Aside from Ali Wong — who cheekily referred to you as “stupid, beautiful, talented Padma Lakshmi” in her Netflix rom-com, Always Be My Maybe — who else makes you laugh? PL: My daughter makes me laugh. She’s very funny, and I’m very happy about that. If I had to choose between her being beautiful and being funny, I’d pick funny because beauty you can buy, but humor you can’t. [laughs] Who else do I think is funny? I’ve done some comedy shows where I featured a lot of young comics. I love Ali. Nikki Glaser is funny. Michelle Buteau is really funny. Amy Schumer, of course, is hilarious. Bowen Yang is hysterical; he has actually hosted our comedy shows along with Matt Rogers twice. I didn’t realize just how funny he is until I got to see even more of his work on Saturday Night Live. I also think Leslie Jones is fantastic. KN: And of course, we can’t not talk a little more intimately about food. Specifically, what would your last meal be? PL: Oh, that’s a hard one. That changes constantly. I love eggplant Parmesan. Or a really good grilled cheese, which is what I’m smelling right now. I love In-N-Out cheeseburgers. I love Spunto pizza. I love fried chicken. I love Bolognese. I love Indian food — probably just a simple bowl of yogurt rice with really good mango pickles.

Rebecca Remick’s

FAVORITE THINGS THIS ENTREPRENEUR AND BUILDER THINKS OUTSIDE THE BOX. BY CHRIS LEE

REBECCA REMICK HAS A RARE COMBINATION OF BUSINESS SAVVY

and people skills. As the owner of Edina custom builder City Homes, she keeps a sharp eye on the growing business, helps clients make wise decisions, and celebrates successes with her team. All the while, she keeps her family — including three active kids — a priority. Her path to builder has been circuitous but deliberate. After earning degrees from Notre Dame, she managed multiple clinics in Minneapolis healthcare systems. Even so, she says, “I have always been captivated by entrepreneurship and was always looking for an opportunity to start my own business. After having my third child and coming up for air, I decided to give it a go.” She found that opportunity far from healthcare. During the 2008 recession, lower land and labor costs encouraged her to build her first homes in Minneapolis’s Bryn Mawr neighborhood. City Homes launched in 2009 and now builds 12 to 15 luxury homes a year, all with the custom touches and smart, livable designs that have become the firm’s hallmarks. This master multi-tasker paused a moment to share her favorite things.

1 | Running the Business Remick loves the personal interaction and relationship building inherent in her business. She takes pride in developing her team’s ideas into solutions that delight homeowners — such as extending indoor living spaces with views to the outdoors, like in this “Minnesota room.”

2 | Making Dreams Come True “Nothing is more rewarding than seeing clients benefit from our work, giving them what they want and making them happy,” she says. City Homes’ cost-effective expertise delivered this maximum-impact entry, giving the client the foyer of her dreams.

3 | Outside-the-Box Thinking She specializes in exploring creative solutions to building challenges. To whit: a new build on a sliver of Lake Minnetonka land that includes three stories, efficient living spaces, a sport court, and a rooftop deck with peerless water views.

4 | Pushing Clients Just Enough

4

Remick started urging clients to use more color several years ago. Leaving neutrals behind is now a trend, but it wasn’t when she painted the cabinets in her own lake house kelly green.

5 | Searching Out Efficiencies She advocates building more simply and efficiently. Instead of expanding a foundation to accommodate additional space, for example, she encourages clients to think about how it could fit “within the box.” This ingenious bunkroom sleeps 12 — perfect for a passel of kids.

6 | Rightsizing Given the cost of land, materials and construction, Remick urges clients to build smarter: “Only build spaces that you’ll actually use. Don’t think of it as downsizing but rather rightsizing!” If you don’t need, say, a home office or a formal dining room, you don’t need to build one. It’s all about making the most of every square foot.

5

7 | Fitness and Wellness This longtime runner and exercise devotee likes to stick to a routine, typically working out at Orangetheory every morning. “I definitely need it or you’re not going to like me much by the end of the day,” she jokes.

7

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY ERICA LOEKS, SPACECRAFTING, TROY THEIS AND ORANGETHEORY

6

8 | Family Travel The Remicks travel often and plan an annual summer adventure. Each member of the family is assigned a highlight to research beforehand so they are prepared upon arrival at their destination, whether that’s Africa, Italy or the Galápagos Islands. (This summer was to be Poland, though it may now be shelved.) A master tip from mom: “We always do half-day tours with a guide; it’s way easier to get your kids to listen to someone else.”

STILL LIFE LECY BROS. HOMES & REMODELING CREATES A SANCTUARY FOR GRACEFUL AGING IN PLACE. BY MARGUERITE HAPPE

WHEN LECY BROS. HOMES & REMODELING WAS TAPPED

to build a custom home on a lush lakefront lot in Waconia, the clients had two primary objectives: “They dreamed of a house that would not only meld into the unique topography but that was specifically designed so they could live there for many years to come,” explains Andy Johnsrud of Lecy Bros. To achieve that, the design-build firm had to get creative. Even maximizing scenic vistas of the surrounding wetland required ingenuity: “The lake is behind the house on most waterfront properties, but this one lies to the front,” he notes. “This landscape complicated our goal to provide extensive water views while maintaining privacy and subtly incorporating a six-car garage.” Moreover, Lecy Bros. needed to create a home that would stand the test of time, both aesthetically and functionally. “In terms of layout, the empty-nester homeowners requested a one-level floor plan that would meet their desire for long-term accessibility,” Johnsrud says. His team created an open-floor concept with expansive windows and a level walkout to the lake. It’s ideal for both today and tomorrow, with wide, level spaces perfect for entertaining friends and family. “One of the challenges with this home was the six-car garage,” he explains. “In order to avoid the first impression of ‘Welcome to my garage,’ we incorporated a drive-through archway.” This feature made it possible for the garage to be discreetly placed toward the rear of the house to provide capacious car storage without impacting curb appeal. Tucked above the garage is what Johnsrud calls a bonus room, a space

156

connected to the main residence but separated by a hallway. “Depending on stage of life, this room can function as anything from a home office to an exercise room to an in-law suite,” he says. As a home office, this togetherbut-apart setup creates a distinct workspace that still offers the opportunity to step away from work for family dinner. “With aging in place in mind, this multi-use space can be transformed to meet the homeowners’ evolving needs,” he adds. The exterior proves that enduring high quality doesn’t need to be high-maintenance. “The homeowners envisioned a modern yet timeless farmhouse that could stand the test of time,” notes Johnsrud. To that end, the Lecy Bros. team curated every material, from the Andersen windows to the James Hardie siding to the composite decking, to create an abode that would not only look fantastic but would require only minimal care over the years. And unlike most design-build firms, the family-owned business employs its own skilled artisans and craftsmen rather than utilizing independent contractors. “Employing our team allows us to offer our clients an extremely good value,” he says. “Our craftsmen provide ultra high-quality work, and the customer never has to pay the surprise labor cost markups that happen when contractors are in demand.” The final product is a stunning lake property with the design and quality to last a lifetime — exactly what the homeowners wanted. “At Lecy Bros., we specialize in custom projects that fit a client’s specifications while remaining conscious of budget,” Johnsrud explains. “We help you plan not only for what you need today, but what you’ll need tomorrow.”

THE HOMEOWNERS SET THEIR SIGHTS

on this Twin Cities west metro property well before construction began on a residence that celebrates the worn-in welcome of a family home. Rehkamp Larson Architects, Hagstrom Builder, Martin Patrick 3 and Savanna Designs, meanwhile, set out to create a house that matched the warm, open nature of their clients and protected their desire for retreat. “It’s a family home, first and foremost,” says Martin Patrick 3 Senior Interior Designer Maria Matlin. “It’s set up to expand its doors to friends and keep family spaces sacred. There’s a consistent feeling of comfort.” The clients were intentional about public and private spaces from the beginning. Upon entry from the circular drive, guests enter the foyer that provides a beautiful entertaining area and serves as a link between the two wings of the house. A custom, channeled leather banquette is a unique room divider, with the family kitchen and four-season porch behind it. This versatile hangout space features a potbelly stove, eating area and porch swing, encased in triple bi-fold doors and double-hung Marvin windows that keep heat out in the summer and open for a crisp breeze in the fall. The porch’s proximity to the outdoor grill and pool area makes it even more of a familial haven. None of the spaces are too formal, Matlin notes, as evidenced by a living and dining area enveloped in the glassy walls of one of the wings and referred to as “the birdcage” for its open yet contained architecture. The floor-toceiling windows and steel framing show off the refined precision that Hagstrom Builder brings to large-scale projects; the heavy materials have a lightweight feel, providing an effortless look while remaining incredibly durable. Just above and onto the balcony resides the abode’s best kept secret. “We put the basement in the loft,” says Rehkamp Larson Architects partner and cofounder Mark Larson, AIA, explaining that the homeowners wanted to forego a basement but preserve a “rumpus room” for the kids. The loft does not disappoint, with its media space, general hangout area, kids’ rooms with bunk beds, and guest rooms. Sliding barn doors maintain privacy between the entertaining space below and the rooms above. The floor plan is narrow enough to feel

protected at every step, with wings on either side that let in plentiful natural light. For Larson, this echoes the theory of prospect and refuge: “You have an incredible view of your terrain, like from the mouth of a cave overlooking a valley. You have all the benefits of seeing into the distance, but you feel protected.” This complex and free-going house is balanced by its refined, limited palette. “The client was keen to make this a family home, so the materials throughout are rustic and durable to take the normal daily abuse of kids and dogs, and still look great,” notes Ryan Lawinger, AIA, of Rehkamp Larson Architects. The architectural materials boil down to stone, concrete, steel, glass and wood, repeated in different ways and at different scale. And the polished concrete, locally sourced stone, and reclaimed pine and white oak will look even better over time as they develop a patina that only comes from family life marks. “The native stone blends so well and integrates from the outside in,” says Pete Hagstrom, president of Hagstrom Builder. “It gives a solid base to the whole property.” The reclaimed wood inspired much of the warm finishes and furnishings: creamy-toned cabinetry and backsplash in the kitchen, classic honed marble in the main-floor master bath, and a whitewash finish on the pine to distinguish it from the barn wood. “The clean and strong background allowed us to get into colorful accents and youthful furniture,” explains Greg Walsh, Martin Patrick 3 proprietor and senior interior designer. “Everything from the rugs to the fabrics was selected with family in mind,” adds fellow MP3 designer Paris Ebersviller, noting they didn’t choose anything the kids couldn’t play on. The balancing act between rustic and refined extends to the outdoors, where a vaulted outbuilding provides some elbow room, be it for entertaining, workshopping or storage. A glass garage door adorns one side of the barn, contrasted by a bi-fold hangar door on the front, which serves as a canopy from sun or rain. “This was one of those spectacular collaborations,” shares Hagstrom. “The teams understood one another’s languages to beautifully translate the clients’ wishes into a one-of-a-kind family home.”

make you feel? What energies does it evoke? These were the thoughtprovoking questions interior designer Kate Regan posed to Tom and Elizabeth Nichols as they set about creating their dream lake home. Elizabeth immediately thought of a beautiful coral necklace she found on vacation in Italy. “That exact shade set a personal, inviting tone,” says Regan, owner of the Sitting Room — not only for the design of the home, but for the collaboration of crafting it, highlighting strong partnerships that built upon Streeter’s unique capability to go custom and classic with a modern cottage in the Deephaven neighborhood of Lake Minnetonka. “The Nichols are passionate entertainers, so the whole home is designed to cater to that passion,” notes Streeter Project Director Brent Pickett. The family had outgrown their previous house and wanted a space centered around entertaining, with design elements that spoke to their penchant for lake life. “A year-round connection to the outdoors was one of our top priorities,” Elizabeth explains. This 6,900-square-foot cottage may appear quintessential in its cedar shake roof and siding, painted shiplap, and a structural detail that’s reminiscent of a cupola — but there’s a party behind that white picket fence.

168

Artful Living

What feels like a cozy two-story from the front is actually a full threestory from the lake, with the entire lower level dedicated to entertaining. A 23-foot bi-folding Centor glass door opens completely, giving uninterrupted access to the lower level from the backyard, pool and hot tub deck. The accordion-like glass panels fold into themselves, creating a natural flow into the entertaining space, where guests are greeted by a large walnut bar with brass accents — an homage to the Nichols’ love of Chris-Craft wooden boats. And although clear sightlines and a seamless indoor/outdoor transition are master strokes of Streeter, this property is a testament to the builder’s ability to take on transitional, timeless design. “This home is custom to the nth degree,” Pickett notes. “It was an iterative process until the very last day of the project.” He adds that the collaboration between Streeter, Swan Architecture, the Sitting Room, and landscapers Keenan & Sveiven, along with the Nichols themselves, made it easy to bring forward new ideas at any point during the process. “Every partner has such an eye for design,” he emphasizes. “And with the Streeter offices just down the road from the cottage, we were able to meet onsite at a moment’s notice to share ideas.”

One of those ideas was salvaging a well-kept secret buried beneath the original house. A massive pocket door disguised as a bookshelf leads a few steps down into a cavernous space. Originally a gun room, the Nichols converted it into a sunken wine cellar and game room while retaining its unique character. “We feel blessed with the complement of designers who teamed up to create this exquisite space,” Elizabeth says. Above the cellar, the lower level hallway is illuminated by a warm pink glow — a Himalayan salt wall framed in LED lighting that is just as much a work of art as it is a therapeutic element of the sauna. Guests can also unwind in the steam shower, yoga studio or golf simulator room. The main level hosts the master suite and a more formal living room that harkens to a classic, transitional style focused around a François & Co. fireplace with custom wood treatments and plasterwork by Darril Otto. In the kitchen and dining room, the coral color palette seriously comes into play. The most dominant use is the leather dining chairs, which don a welcoming shade that invites guests to grab a seat and stay awhile. Coral accents are peppered throughout the abode, particularly in the mudroom, as well as the artwork. And upstairs on the

third story, three bedrooms and bathrooms provide plenty of space for the Nichols’ daughter and guests. “Coral evokes a sense of energy in this sophisticated, classic home,” Regan explains. “We wanted to work with a classic nautical palette featuring white and navy, plus a complementary color. There’s a nod to the nautical vibe without being overly thematic.” Her Excelsior-based design firm naturally lends itself to that classic lake style. Integrated smart technology brings this Streeter-crafted cottage into the 21st century. Voice control is featured throughout the house — “You can literally talk to the walls,” jokes Pickett — letting the Nichols control temperature, music and more by simply speaking. Plus television projectors are hidden in the recessed ceiling cavities. The team incorporated these cutting-edge elements into the abode without creating an overly modern aesthetic. “The Nichols’ personalities just shine,” concludes Andrea Swan, AIA, principal of Swan Architecture. “It was easy to reflect that in their home because of how collaborative they were. This home is a true reflection of their lifestyle and personal tastes.”

CAMPING IS A FAVORITE SUMMER PASTIME.

My childhood memories are full of dewy tents, mosquito bites, campfire smoke, s’mores and smiles. Cooking over the campfire is part of the thrill of living amongst the trees. There are many ways to add adventure to your next meal, like foraging for your own wild berries to make a cobbler. Here in Minnesota, berry picking is allowed in state parks as well as state and national forests. July is prime berry picking time in central Minnesota, while it hits in August in the northern part of the state. But much like favorite fishing holes, wild berry patches are coveted, so you may need to do some scouting (or even bribing!) to find a good spot. One of my favorite places for wild berry picking is Afton State Park. If you’re in a state park, the ranger likely will happily point you in the right direction. All you need is a good pair of hiking boots, some thin hiking pants to avoid a brush with poison ivy, and a small bucket. Wild raspberries like a lot of sunshine, so you can often find them in open woodlands, along a stream bank, or at the edge of a campsite or hiking trail. Filling It’s important to make sure you 6 cups know exactly what you are picking and ½ cup eating. Wild red and black raspberries 3 Tbsp. resemble the grocery-store variety, but 2 Tbsp. it’s best to bring along a berry picking guide to ensure they’re safe to eat. And pinch because these berries are wild, you should check them for small insects Topping and give them a good gentle wash ¾ cup before you consume or cook. Picking ¾ cup wild berries is like a family scavenger ½ cup hunt for your dessert. Grab a bucket, ½ cup get the kids involved and enjoy the ½ tsp. fruits of your labor over the campfire. ¼ tsp. pinch 2 Tbsp.

For the topping: Combine brown sugar, flour, oats, nuts, lemon zest, cinnamon and salt in a separate bowl. 3. Over the white-hot coals of a campfire (or on the metal grate/cover), melt butter in a 9-inch cast iron skillet. Pour melted butter into topping mixture and stir until incorporated and clumpy. 4. Spread filling in an even layer in cast iron skillet then sprinkle over topping. Cover with a double layer of foil, crimping edge to seal. 5. Return skillet to campfire coals and cook 30 to 45 minutes, until berries are cooked and bubbling, and topping is golden brown. (TIP: If you prefer a crispier topping, add a couple white coals on top of foil.) 6. Serve immediately with ice cream, Greek yogurt or whipped cream.

ADVENTURE C A B I N

UPON THE SHORES OF MINNESOTA’S FAMED LAKE MILLE

Lacs sits an extraordinary structure. The Scandinavian chic abode stands distinctly apart from the other cabins on the fabled body of water, which was very much the point. After all, blending into the crowd has never much interested architect Andrea Swan, AIA, principal of Swan Architecture. “The idea of a traditional Minnesota cabin wouldn’t have worked for me,” she says. Traditional cabin it most certainly is not. Instead, it’s light, bright and white. She and her husband, Bret, erected the home, lovingly dubbed Swan Fish Camp, back in 2009. For years, they had been heading north to Mille Lacs from the Twin Cities for fishing trips, always keeping an eye on lakefront real estate but never finding quite the right fit. Then in April 2008, the couple scored a narrow 100-by-208-foot lot with million-dollar views, one of the lake’s few remaining unbuilt lots. The arrival of their first child, Emilia, prompted Andrea to get to work designing a familyoriented, sustainability-minded lake home on a budget. It was brought to life by Nor-Son Custom Builders of nearby Baxter in a record four months, with thoughtful details like a durable navy blue steel roof and high-efficiency windows that let in abundant natural light and blur the boundaries between indoor and out. Modest in the best way possible, the cabin has everything its owners need and nothing they don’t. After all, with views like these, what more could you want? “The best moment of any given day up here is sitting on the deck and watching the sun set,” Andrea notes. And for several years, the abode served as the ideal year-round getaway for the family of three. But when the couple welcomed their second daughter, Elizabeth, in 2013, the cabin’s 1,860 square feet started feeling cramped. So Andrea got to work again, with the goal of giving the space a thoughtful makeover to accommodate not only their larger family but also guests like her parents or the kids’ friends for a weekend up north. Once again, she turned to Nor-Son to help make it happen. Completed in 2019, the transformation left untouched what worked while addressing specific areas and upping the finished square footage to 1,998. On the main level, suspended loft-style bunks were added for the girls, creating ample space for the entire Swan family when hosting guests. The biggest face-lift came upstairs, though, where there previously weren’t any true sleeping quarters. (Guests slept on a pullout sofa, which Andrea admits was no longer cutting it.) Today, the sleeper sofa is still an option, but there are also two queen beds that reside in a previously walled-off knee wall space that’s been cleverly reclaimed. Other interior refreshes include new wool carpeting and window treatments, durable vinyl wall covering in high-traffic areas, a fresh coat of paint virtually everywhere, and an improved mechanical system, including better HEPA filtration since the family battles allergies. Outside, the focus on hospitality continues, with a new fire pit area centered around a scene-stealing 16-foot-tall board-formed concrete chimney designed by Andrea and built by stonemason Ryan Ostrowski of Craftsmen Concrete — with clear sightlines showcasing the lake, naturally. Water views also informed the revamped landscaping as completed by Adam Dewey of Yard Creations. Taken altogether, it’s a welcoming gathering place for guests to linger long into the evening. One of Andrea’s closest advisers on the project? Her mother, Katarina. “My parents are immigrants from Slovakia, and my mom has really good taste,” she explains. Her mom’s opinions were instrumental when it came to the cabin’s interior design in 2009 and again for the remodel a decade later. Together, the two selected many of the original furnishings that the Swans still love to this day, an effortless blend of Scandinavian, Americana and Native American influences. (There’s also the marlin that hangs above the sliding doors leading out to the deck, a replica of one Bret caught while on a business trip in Mexico, which Andrea at first opposed but ultimately decided fits in quite nicely.) Looking around the escape she’s created for her family — and now friends — Andrea describes the cabin in a single word: “Ethereal. It’s light and white and lofty, and when the sun is setting, you get a flicker off the mother-of-pearl glass mosaic on the kitchen backsplash. The movement on it truly is ethereal to me. I feel like I’m just one step closer to heaven when I’m here.”

introduction, but I’ll still give it a shot. Born and raised in New Jersey, the domestic doyenne began modeling in her teens, working for brands from Chanel to Unilever. (In fact, that’s how she paid her way through school at Barnard.) After college, she had a stint as a stockbroker on Wall Street before starting a catering business in the mid-seventies, which set her on the path to become the iconic tastemaker we’ve all come to know and love. Since then, she has built a veritable media empire, penned dozens of best-selling books, snagged countless awards, and even become America’s first female self-made billionaire. In recent years, Stewart has gotten playful with her image, striking up an unlikely friendship with Snoop Dogg, posting break-the-Internet glimpses into her life on Instagram, and even poking fun at herself with pitchperfect cameos and campaigns. Here, she chats about her latest projects, her proudest accomplishments and her advice for living the good life. What is a day in the life of Martha Stewart like? There’s never a typical day, but I do wake up quite early — I have no shades on my windows, so I usually wake up with the sunrise, around 5 a.m. — and I enjoy staying quite busy, whether in my office or on the farm. Those are the two consistent aspects of my days. Looking back on your decades-long career, what highlights stand out for you? The hard work that has been done and continues to be done at the Martha Stewart Center for Living in New York City stands out for me. Especially during these trying times, their work is more vital than ever, and I am so proud to be a part of such a charitable place working to change medicine.

I think my secret is that I’m always learning and trying to absorb more information. My curiosity has never stopped, and it keeps me going in my life and in my business. Earlier this year, you partnered with California Closets on a beautiful

192

Artful Living

I was turning one of my bedrooms into a closet and decided to work with California Closets. We installed the most beautiful closet, and it ended up being one of the most popular features in Martha Stewart Living. That was the inspiration behind the collection and the start of our partnership together, which resulted in the brand’s firstever modular closet system. You also just debuted a massive Wayfair brand shop, with products based on your four homes — Bedford, Lily Pond, Perry Street and Skylands — and the lifestyle each of them embodies. How would you describe the distinct personalities of these four properties? Each of my homes is very different. I love the wide expanses of land, all the different animals, and the whimsical charm that can be found on my farm in Bedford. I enjoy spending summers out East embracing the coastal lifestyle of Lily Pond. I love the urban hustle and the modern aesthetic that can be found in my home on Perry Street. And I like to escape the world in the late months of summer and go on hikes near my Skylands home in Maine, where my taste in interiors is perhaps its most traditional. You’ve struck up an unlikely friendship with Snoop Dogg, and the two of you host Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party together. What have you learned from him? Snoop has taught me so much about music and culture that I would never be privy to otherwise. He is extremely knowledgeable, laid-back, smart and a good businessman. We have a lot of fun together. Lastly, what advice do you have for those of us hoping to live the good life? Look for opportunities around you and start with your own expertise, whether it’s your vocation or avocation. If you’ve always loved art, channel that passion and knowledge into being a docent for a museum. Never before have so many people had so much knowledge and so much time to use it. Stick with it. Don’t give up. Defend your ideas, but be flexible. Success seldom comes in exactly the form you imagine it will.

WHEN TWIN CITIES TASTEMAKER NANCY BIGOS

set foot on the 1920 Lake Minnetonka estate once owned by the lumber baron Fullerton family, she instantly fell in love. “I knew it was the diamond in the rough,” she says of the original home and the accompanying 7.2-acre waterfront property. “It wrapped itself around me and said, ‘You have to buy me.’” So she did, then began the painstaking process of conserving the abode’s considerable history, renovating the existing 10,000-square-foot footprint and adding another 5,500 — all while weaving her signature style throughout. And today, the five-bedroom, eight-bathroom home situated at 3350 Fox Street in Orono is ready for a new owner.

“This is an unprecedented recreation of the original house,” explains listing agent Cindy Redmond of Coldwell Banker Realty. Her listing partner, George Stickney, agrees: “I’ve seen a lot of houses in my 34 years of real estate, but this is the nicest remodel of a home I’ve ever seen.” While Stickney notes it likely would have been easier (not to mention cheaper) to start from scratch, Bigos loved the home’s good energy and wanted to respect its heritage. And when she started digging into the materials history, it became a given that those special touches would stay. To wit: Bigos came to learn that the property’s front gates, which needed refurbishing, were fabricated by the same company that crafted the gates for the White House. She wanted to replace the marble in the front entry, but when she looked into it, she was warned not to touch it — it’s no longer available anywhere, to anyone. Worth more than a quarter million dollars, it’s found in such prominent places as New York City’s Lincoln Center. And so the marble stayed. Wrought-iron railings got a fresh polish, floors were refurbished and, in one instance of putting the past back into the abode, all the original wall sconces were reinstalled in their former locations. In some cases, it made sense to conserve details while updating, 3350 Fox Street, Orono as when Bigos • Price upon request indulged her inner • Built in 1920 gourmet with a • 15,858 square feet new pizza oven • 5 bedrooms — then faced it • 8 bathrooms with the brick • 7-car garage that once housed • 7.2 acres a furnace chute. • 700 feet of shoreline You’d never guess that a state-ofthe-art appliance lies behind the charming, period-appropriate material. And in other situations, spaces got a face-lift. Case in point: The original servants’ quarters, which included living areas for a butler, chauffeur and seamstress, were adapted and expanded into a master suite, a larger office, children’s bedrooms, and a bar area inspired by the Ralph Lauren restaurant bar in Chicago. The house is also outfitted with high-tech lighting, sound, security and the like. When it came to the exterior, quite similarly no expense was spared. Brick was re-fashioned in a vintage kiln to look like the original. Bigos even traveled to France to research the gardens at Versailles and had her own inspired take planted and maintained on the grounds, along with a pool and more. “You could spend your whole lifetime going from room to room depending on what mood you’re in,” she says. “The library, for instance, was completely imported from Paris [by the Fullertons]. The detail of the house! I’m still in awe of it all.” Redmond and Stickney agree, emphasizing that there’s simply no other home in the Twin Cities with this kind of wow factor. “This is really rare,” Redmond concludes. “It’s a fortress, and it will live on for another 100 years. It’s really a privilege to see something like this.”

WHAT DO MINNESOTA, ST. PAUL AND

real estate have in common? Mya Honeywell. Born and raised in greater Minnesota by an artist, builder and carpenter, this longtime St. Paul resident has seen countless building and remodeling projects come to fruition. She harnessed her passion for homes and community, and turned it into a thriving real-estate business built over nearly two decades. The Coldwell Banker Realty agent quickly became a trusted advisor, providing honesty, integrity and fairness to her clients during one of their most important life decisions: a home purchase. As families grew or life situations changed, her knowledge and understanding of the markets grew — as did her customer base. Over the past few years, Honeywell has become increasingly disheartened by growing evidence of her fellow Minnesotans experiencing poverty, especially when it comes to food and housing insecurity. She wanted to be a part of the solution, so she began revising her business to unite real estate and social responsibility. At the end of 2019, she established the donor-advised HIVE Fund through the Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation with the aim of making grants to local nonprofits with every home purchase or sale. And with the help of her team and clients, the fund was able to grant $5,000 to the Sanneh Foundation, Second Harvest Heartland and Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity earlier this year.

When the pandemic hit, Honeywell’s plans to distribute grants changed. “We initiated this fund to contribute on behalf of our clients, and there will always be need,” she notes. “But people are in need of support now more than ever. We’ll get through this together.” Honeywell says her work with the Sanneh Foundation has been particularly eye-opening; she has witnessed hundreds of families line up at the Conway Community Center to receive fresh, healthy produce. Watching a mother and her son attempt to balance their bags on their bicycles’ handlebars as they pedaled off, she thought, This isn’t going to get better unless we do more. To that end, she has worked with friends and community members to gain access to artisan breads, local goods and monetary donations exceeding $20,000 to support emergency food relief efforts. “For some people, it’s their first brush with food insecurity, and others have been battling poverty much longer,” she says. “But everyone deserves food and shelter.” “As realtors, we see our clients through incredibly human experiences,” Honeywell adds. “We have the privilege of interacting with people at their most authentic state, across different life paths. More than anything, we all aspire for a place to belong, a community, a home.” To learn more, visit socialresponsiblerealtors.com.

SMALL GARDENS ARE ENCHANTING. IT’S NO ACCIDENT THAT FRANCES

Hodgson Burnett’s captivating childhood classic The Secret Garden told a story of transformation against the backdrop of a little garden that could. With heart and hard work, children nurtured this neglected space until everyone and everything inside the enclosed walls became the best version of themselves. That’s the promise of a garden: a joyful place where we can use the power of the outdoors to refuel and reconnect with friends and family. With a little thought and planning, small spaces in particular can serve as the most lovely garden rooms that fulfill that promise of beauty, joy and connection. Your garden, like everything else in your life, should reflect your individual style. A strong point of view will help you make easier, faster decisions when you’re designing your garden, enabling you to create a cohesive look and a calming oasis. Consider your home’s architectural style and your personal decor preferences to seamlessly merge form and function. Think about who will enjoy your garden, how you want to live in your space, the mood you want to create, and the feeling that will call you outdoors over and over again.

BOLD ECLECTIC More is more! Go big or go home! You’re not afraid to make a statement, and every part of your life agrees. You’re often the life — and the host — of the party, and naturally, your home and garden should also be big and bold. Eclectic design means not having to choose: a little bit modern, a little bit vintage. It allows for shapes, patterns and textures to cohabitate in one space so you can layer in your favorite plants and textiles of the moment. It’s about living large in the small garden.

CLEAN MINIMALIST Cool, calm and in control. From crisp outfits to streamlined interiors, it’s all about good lines and flattering neutrals. Structure and style go hand-in-hand, and a clean minimalist garden should mimic those strong lines you love from the closet to the kitchen. Keep the outside equally free of clutter by using restraint and laser focus to select what goes where. When it comes to the number of plants and materials, less is more (but we probably didn’t need to tell you that) for that clean, refined minimalist look.

ORGANIC MODERN By day, you steal a moment in the breezy, woven hammock to take in the fresh air. By nightfall, it’s all about friends by the fire, with plenty of cozy blankets. But your modern sensibilities keep your organic style more naturally crisp than crunchy. Give your garden that same heartwarming touch that you bring to your dinner parties with earthy details designed in modern lines. Strike a careful balance of the right elements — fire, water, flora — with a healthy mix of lines and curves.

GLOBAL BOHO Call it the Eat, Pray, Love garden. Create your fantasy getaway with a garden room that satisfies your wanderlust without ever leaving home. Channel your carefree, bohemian spirit by layering greenery, textiles and travel souvenirs. Scout vintage shops for accessories, like this carved daybed that sends us spinning to the Far East. Toss in splashes of vivid color, found objects (maybe that Buddha statue you’ve been lugging around for years), comfy floor poufs and enough soft candlelight to start dreaming about that next trip.

URBAN HOMESTEAD You dream of wide open spaces and life like it used to be, but you live in the modern world without vast acreage. Don’t give up those homesteading dreams too quickly. Small city homes can still bring in hip heritage elements of growing, fermenting, beekeeping and farming. You might have to share the outdoor dining room with the chickens, but a mini farm adds charm and comes with built-in entertainment. Dress up your coop and transform it into a focal point. To keep the homestead from getting lost down a country road, fluff your nest with hip planters and trendy accessories. Copyright © 2020 by Isa Hendry Eaton and Jennifer Blaise Kramer. TO BE FRANK THE LIFE WE TOOK FOR GRANTED CONNECTING IN A NO-CONTACT AGE HAS BEEN

difficult. The pandemic has punctured our illusion of invulnerability, and we were caught off-guard with little time to prepare for isolation. It is difficult to come to terms with this capricious new reality when our regular existence is disrupted in unimaginable ways. I miss the variety of life, independence and the freedom of unlimited everyday choices. We have thrived on predictability and ordinary routines to help us feel in control. The usual things that marked our previous days have vanished, and time feels like it’s taken on a flat and seamless quality. It drives home the point that you don’t know what you have until it’s gone. The safety of our homes and personal spaces has been given more meaning and has become an unfortunate symbol of privilege. Most of our situations have been severely stressed and disrupted. This includes our families, our social connections, our work and our financial positions. Healthcare workers and others on the frontlines are the selfless heroes of the world. They have put their own safety and well-being on the line for all of us. It is essential to respect the new rules of conduct and accepted protocols. As we tiptoe back to our former lives, ordinary things that we long took for granted are now feeling wondrous and even a bit dangerous. I will never expect anything “as usual” ever again. Cheers to the safe resumption of life, to good health and to new possibilities.
