OUR EXPANSION

FROM THE DIRECTOR

Nannette Maciejunes and Christopher Rothko discuss a Mark Rothko painting at the Mark Rothko: The Decisive Decade, 1940 – 1950 media event.

Earlier this year I was thrilled to share with you the plans for the expansion of CMA that will begin to be a reality when we break ground on our new wing later this year! The Downtown Commission reviewed our plans and so can you. Visit our website, columbusmuseum.org/art-matters, to see renderings or come to the Museum and check out the 3-D model. As we move closer to starting construction, we will be sharing even more exciting details with you. I am still buzzing from our opening celebrations for Mark Rothko: The Decisive Decade, 1940 – 1950. Nearly 800 of you joined us for the Member Preview and, as our lyrical Curator Dominique H. Vasseur noted, “Rothko paintings have this wonderful life on the canvas. They dance." In addition to the stunning exhibition, the Member-Only celebration featured a conversation between Christopher Rothko, the artist’s son, and Douglas Baxter, the esteemed director of Pace Gallery, New York City. More than 500 Members were fortunate enough to hear them. But if you missed it, visit our YouTube channel, www.YouTube.com/columbusmuseum, to view the highlights. As Columbus CEO announced on Twitter “First @annieleibovitz at @wexarts, now #rothko at @columbusmuseum. It's a great time to be an art lover in Columbus!”

Another reason that it’s great to be an art lover in Columbus: Strings Attached: The Living Tradition of Czech Puppets opens on March 8. This unique exhibition explores the rich history of puppetry in what is now the Czech Republic and its influence throughout the world. We were honored to collaborate with esteemed Curator Nina Malíková, from the Arts and Theatre Institute, Prague, and with Guest Curator Joseph Brandesky, from the College of Arts and Sciences of The Ohio State University. Come and see the puppet tradition that helped to inspire the stop-action film magic of The Nightmare Before Christmas and Frankenweenie. I also want to welcome the newest members of our Museum family, Tyler Cann, our associate curator for contemporary art and Mike Shih, our director of information technology. We are fortunate to have you both on board.

MARK ROTHKO THE DECISIVE DECADE 1940-1950 THROUGH MAY 26

CMA celebrates one of the world's most influential and best-known artists of the twentieth-century with the exhibition Mark Rothko: The Decisive Decade 1940-1950. By focusing on works less often explored, Mark Rothko shows how the artist was influenced by Surrealism, the universal significance of myth, and the transformative power of color. Marcus Rothkowitz born in Russia in 1903. He arrived in Portland, Oregon, with his family in 1913, speaking only Yiddish and Russian. By the next year, he had—like so many young American boys of the time—a paper route. From this inauspicious beginning he went on to become one of the most influential artists in modern history. An outstanding student in high school, Rothko gained admittance to Yale University on scholarship. He often sketched during his brief time in college, and cofounded the weekly pamphlet, The Yale Saturday Evening Pest. Whether due to boredom or financial difficulties, he dropped out of Yale in 1923. From there, he moved to New York City to begin a career as an artist, which meant, at first, taking odd jobs in the Garment District. In New York Rothko met a wide variety of like-minded painters who would influence him on his journey toward abstraction. In turn, many of them would be influenced by Rothko. A selection of works by friends and art colleagues, including Milton Avery, Robert Motherwell, and Jackson Pollock, are in the exhibition’s last gallery.

Using comments from family members, friends, artists, art historians, collectors, and curators, the film draws an intimate portrait that provides insight into the man and his masterpieces. Through his large scale paintings, Rothko hoped to move viewers to feel something akin to religious awe and evoke emotional responses to such basic human experiences as tragedy, ecstasy, and doom. STRINGS ATTACHED THE LIVING TRADITION OF CZECH PUPPETS MEMBER PREVIEW MARCH 8

Strings Attached: The Living Tradition of Czech Puppets explores the rich history of puppetry in the Czech Republic and its influence throughout the world. For the Czech people, puppetry helped maintain ethnic and national identity during long years of authoritarian rule. Strings Attached illustrates this enduring legacy by using not only puppets but also related set designs, masks, and costumes, dating from the beginning of the nineteenth-century to the present. The earliest puppets in the exhibition are those used by itinerant puppeteers who performed for both adult and young audiences. The majority of puppets trace the evolution of modern Czech puppetry from these traditional roots. Strings Attached was made possible through collaboration with our international partner the Arts and Theatre Institute, Prague and our local partner the College of Arts and Sciences at The Ohio State University. This international collaboration enables CMA to present these rare objects from Prague to the people of Central Ohio. Puppets from the first part of the 20th century demonstrate the influence both of European expressionism and the Bauhaus movement in Germany. In 1948, the Theatre Act officially elevated puppet theater to the same legal, social, and artistic level as all other theater arts. Many new puppet theaters were created and puppets from this period reflect Soviet influence. Then, new, emerging puppet theaters began collaborating with Czech writers to create original Czech productions. This resulted in experimentation and new forms of puppetry such as black light theater based on

black theater techniques like those performed in ancient China. Contemporary Czech puppetry continues to flourish and to demonstrate the connections between Czech puppetry and international forms of drama, ballet, opera, and animated and stop-action film. This exhibition is organized by the Columbus Museum of Art, the College of Arts and Sciences at The Ohio State University, and the Arts and Theatre Institute, Prague. Nina Malíková, from the Arts and Theatre Institute, Prague, is the curator with guest curator Joseph Brandesky, OSU theater professor, and Carole Genshaft, CMA adjunct curator.

Two of these were gifts of Sara Jo Kobacker with the third a gift of Dr. Thomas J. Hawk. Morris, who has

Two amazing works by internationally recognized glass artist Jon Kuhn were donated by Donna and Rodney H. Wasserstrom. WHAT’S HAPPENING AT CMA

Connector Series

Columbus Museum of Art values new and different ways of thinking and doing. Through our exhibitions and programs, we provide opportunities for people to discover the value of creativity in their own lives. The Center for Creativity at the Columbus Museum of Art exists to champion, celebrate, and cultivate the creativity within everyone. These new Center for Creativity programs spark creativity by fostering imagination, encouraging collaboration, cultivating critical thinking or celebrating imagination.

For the Connector Series the CMA Center for Creativity partners with creative people in our community to present intriguing, memorable experiences for all visitors on the second Saturday of every month. Come for unexpected encounters with local artists and performers, creative exploration, and fun for groups of any age. • Connector 1, Saturday, March 9, 1:00 - 4:00 PM TradeMark Gunderson, an artist, musician, and pioneer of the mashup musical technique, demonstrates some of his experimental musical instruments including the Thimbletron and a turntable that plays objects rather than albums. • Connector 2, Saturday, April 13, 1:00 - 4:00 PM Artist and performer Latosha Matthews will help visitors develop characters and costumes for a Las Vegas-style variety show.

Big Idea Gallery Opens April 23, 2013 It’s all about COLOR this year in the Big Idea Gallery at the CMA Center for Creativity. Inspired by a variety of colorfilled works from the CMA’s collection including Op Art paintings, contemporary photography, and weavings, this dynamic exhibition explores ways artists play, create a mood, or affect our senses with color. In addition to great works of art, the installation includes an assortment of puzzles, games, art-making activities, and CMA’s own Colorblast Air Hockey Table. 16
