LET ART SPEAK TO YOU

PAGE 3

During the holiday season, we take time to reflect on what makes us grateful. CMA is grateful for the tremendous support of our members, the generosity of our donors, and with the addition of the Pizzuti Collection of CMA, our expanded impact on our city. In 2019, your support enabled CMA to provide an arts-rich, child-centered, responsive learning ecosystem for young children and the next generation of early childhood educators in our Wonder School, a platform for teens to express their creativity, and a connection to our community through collaborations with local artists and creatives. With your support, CMA will continue to transform the city of Columbus through creative experiences, engaged learning, connectivity, and the best the art world has to offer.

2019

And there are even many more ways to embrace the wonder of the season here at CMA. Explore the best of contemporary art with Driving Forces: Contemporary Art from the Collection of Ann and Ron Pizzuti at both CMA locations. Don’t forget the charming A Mile and A Half of Lines: The Art of James Thurber exhibition and the hands-on HOME exhibition in the Big Idea Gallery in our Chase Center for Creativity. Get excited for our upcoming Art after Stonewall, 1969 – 1989 exhibition by checking out the work of Ivy Atoms, our 2019 Columbus Comics Residency winner and LGBTQ artist. Opening around Thanksgiving, don’t miss Jean Dubuffet: Anything but Boring, made possible by a generous loan from Jay and Jeanie Schottenstein. Before it closes December 8, make sure you see the Rodin exhibition that illustrates why the artist’s work is a crucial link between traditional and modern art.

DRIVING FORCES CONTEMPORARY ART FROM THE COLLECTION OF ANN AND RON PIZZUTI PARK STREET 10. 26.19 – 3.8.20 BROAD STREET 11.1.19 – 2.2.20

With more than 100 works, Driving Forces is the largest exhibition of work from the private collection of Ann and Ron Pizzuti ever offered for public view. Organized by Guest Curator Rebecca Ibel with Tyler Cann, CMA Pizzuti Family curator of contemporary art, it is also the first exhibition to span both Columbus Museum of Art locations – our downtown Broad Street location and our Short North Park Street location.

“Driving Forces is a celebration of the Pizzuti Collection building and programming joining the Columbus Museum of Art family,” said Nannette V. Maciejunes, executive director of CMA. “It is also a celebration of a local and global legacy in contemporary art and the pinnacle of our first year as one museum with two locations.”

As an artist-centric collection, the Pizzuti Collection is uniquely positioned to provide commentary on the role artists play in society. With work by more than 75 artists from more than 20 different countries, Driving Forces features a wide-range of work by artists who have influenced the direction of 20th-century art, such as Frank Stella and Susan Rothenberg, with others who are helping to define what art means in the 21st century, including Nick Cave, Deana Lawson, Zanele Muholi and Zhang Huan, among many others. With an contemporary artistic and cultural issues.

Ann and Ron Pizzuti acquired their first work of art, Circus People by Karel Appel, in 1972. This marked the start of their journey as collectors, and the beginning of a renowned collection of global contemporary art.

OBJECT/SET: GAURI GILL’S ACTS OF APPEARANCE 11.1.19 – 2.2.20

CMA is pleased to present a suite of photographs from Acts of Appearance, an ongoing series by the artist Gauri Gill (b. 1970, Chandigarh, India). Initially trained in painting and the applied arts at the Delhi College of Art (BFA 1992), Gill earned another BFA in Photography from the Parsons School of Design and an MFA in Photography from Stanford University. Gill’s work is held in the collections of various prominent institutions and has also been widely exhibited, most recently at the 58th Venice Biennale (2019). While traveling through Rajasthan and Maharashtra, Gill learned about the Bahora processions that occur annually within regional Adivasi villages. These processions feature performers enacting scenes from well-loved, recognizable mythical stories while wearing masks of archetypal gods and demons. Reflecting on our tendency to privilege extraordinary characters and events over everyday facts and experiences, Gill decided to celebrate day to day realities instead—to, as she states, “flatten this hierarchy of human experience.” In 2014, Gill began collaborating with the sons of renowned craftsman Dharma Kadu—Subhas and Bhagvan Dharma Kadu—along with their families, and more than 30 local artists and volunteers. This group worked together to create new masks that represented contemporary life within the collaborators’ community, an Adivasi village in Jawhar district, Maharashtra. The resulting masks revealed a widened range of humans, animals, and emotions (rasas). In 2015, Gill began her series Acts of Appearance, depicting a cast of volunteer actors wearing these new, non-idealized masks

scaled precisely to be shown at Documenta as a ‘demonstration set’ for the ongoing series. However, after viewing Acts of Appearance in Kassel, Columbus collector Neil Rector asked Gill to allow him to acquire the entire demonstration set just as it was shown at the fair, as a Documenta Set. In keeping with the collaborative spirit of the series, this intact archive demonstrates a mutual consideration, between collector and artist, for the specific lives and histories of photographic objects. Mozart to Matisse is a series featuring chamber music performed by Columbus Symphony Orchestra (CSO) musicians paired with discussions of art related in theme by CMA curators. Illustrated lectures weave together the relationship between CSO Masterworks programs and the visual arts. This program features James McNeill Whistler, who broke dramatically from existing currents in Victorian painting. Whether in the iconic portrait of his mother or a depiction of fireworks in the London sky, Whistler emphasized the abstract formal elements of his compositions, such as color and shape, rather than the subjects themselves. His formalism is reinforced by titles such as “nocturne,” “harmony”, or “arrangement”—all references to music, a medium that can convey moods without the use of images, a key facet of modern painting and sculpture in the 20th century. Cost of this program is $20 for nonmembers (includes general admission) and $5 for members. To buy tickets, please visit columbusmuseum.org, Events & Programs.

At the Cleveland Museum of Art, explore Michelangelo: Mind of the Master, an unprecedented opportunity to experience the brilliance of Michelangelo’s achievements on an intimate scale through more than two dozen original drawings. Most of the drawings are from the collection of Queen Christina of Sweden (1626–1689) and will be seen for the first time in the United States. Former CMA curator and current Cleveland Museum of Art Chair of Modern, Contemporary, and Decorative Arts and William P. and Amanda C. Madar Curator of American Painting and Sculpture Mark Cole, will give a very private tour of highlights of the American Collection.
