FROM THE DIRECTOR Accolades galore are rolling in for the Museum. We were thrilled to be featured as Best Art Gallery in the Best of OSU March 29 issue of the OSU student newspaper The Lantern. Also in March, I was honored as an Ally by Equality Ohio at their annual Allies & Advocates Columbus event. Being a LGBTQ ally is a natural fit for art museums because so many of the creative people who are a vital part of the arts community – artists, curators, gallery owners – are also part of the LGBTQ community. I’m proud that CMA has organized Art after Stonewall, a groundbreaking survey coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots that features more than 200 works of art exploring the impact of the LGBTQ Civil-Rights movement on the art world. The exhibition opened at The Grey Art Gallery at New York University and Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art April 24. The March issue of ARTnews called the exhibition one of “the most promising museum shows and biennials around the world” and the April issue featured a roundtable that included Guest Curator Jonathan Weinberg. Art after Stonewall will open at CMA in 2020.

In June, we celebrate the opening of our special summer exhibitions starting with Jim Hodges, at Pizzuti Collection of the Columbus Museum of Art (Pizzuti Collection of CMA) featuring more than thirty works from the collection of Ron and Ann Pizzuti revealing how the artist finds complex beauty in the fragile and fleeting, the mundane, and the timeless. On June 13 we open both Greater Columbus, our partnership with the Greater Columbus Arts Council featuring Columbus-based artists, and In a New Light: Alice Schille and the American Watercolor Movement. Guest Curator Tara Keny presents new scholarship and insights into Alice Schille, who was a wonderfully talented and tenacious artist.

JIM HODGES

6.1.19 – 9.22.19 MEMBER DAY 6.1.19

This exhibition features more than thirty works by Jim Hodges from the collection of Ron and Ann Pizzuti. A highly regarded figure in contemporary art, Hodges often finds complex beauty in the fragile and fleeting, the mundane, and the timeless. His work is attuned to the power of a simple gesture. Hodges is among a generation of artists who came of age in the 1980s and 90s amidst a deepening AIDS epidemic and the continuing struggle for LGBTQ visibility and rights; love and loss are intertwined themes in his work. Whether using words and phrases, reflective materials, or photographs, Hodges’ work addresses the personal and collective experience of the body and the senses. With a highly poetic sensibility, he draws our attention to the meeting place of external objects and interior life. With work in a variety of media from 1992 to 2019 collected by Ron and Ann Pizzuti over a period of decades, this exhibition offers a unique view of the artist’s practice. It also reflects the strong relationship between the artist and Columbus’ most prominent collectors of contemporary art.

IN A NEW LIGHT: ALICE SCHILLE AND THE AMERICAN WATERCOLOR MOVEMENT 6.14.19 – 9.29.19 MEMBER PREVIEW PARTY 6.13.19

More than 50 works, many of which have not been seen for decades, comprise In a New Light. The exhibition honors Columbus native Alice Schille’s 150th birthday and her contribution to the American watercolor movement, offering new critical insights on this remarkable artist. This illuminating exhibition explores Schille’s travels, teaching and her steadfast advocacy for women’s suffrage. In a New Light is organized by CMA with Guest Curators James Keny and Tara Keny, the Modern Women’s Fund curatorial assistant in the Department of Drawings and Prints at The Museum of Modern Art. One of the most celebrated American watercolorists of the 20th century, Schille was largely forgotten after WWII until recent scholarship revealed her overlooked creative brilliance. She earned acclaim from critics and fellow artists across the United States and Europe at a time when becoming an acknowledged professional artist was a particularly challenging path for women. Her subjects were often beach and harbor scenes, landscapes and city marketplaces, painted in purewash watercolor with modern compositions and Fauve color she had observed firsthand in Paris. She was praised for her ability to infuse bold compositions with movement and light. The exhibition is accompanied by a 100-page catalogue, available in the Museum Store, authored by Tara Keny, James Keny and Kathleen A. Foster, a watercolor expert and senior curator of

PAGANINI IN COLUMBUS SEE AND HEAR THE WORLD’S MOST FAMOUS VIOLIN LIMITED TIME! 5.11.19 – 5.19.19

Considered by many to be the most famous violin in the world, Niccolò Paganini’s “Il Cannone” violin travels to Columbus for the first time in its history this May. Greater Columbus Sister Cities International (GCSCI) with the generous support of Columbus City Council, the Harold C. Schott Foundation and the Greater Columbus Arts Council, host Paganini’s “Il Cannone” violin at CMA, with a public performance by the Columbus Symphony Orchestra (CSO) on Wednesday, May 15 at 8:00 pm at the historic Ohio Theater. Constructed in 1743 by Bartolomeo Giuseppe Guarneri, “Il Cannone” is most known for the rich and powerful sound it produces. This Italian national treasure is on permanent display at the Palazzo Doria-Tursi in Genoa, Italy. It rarely leaves its home in Genoa, making this visit to Columbus truly historic. Niccolò Paganini, often referred to as the Devil’s Violinist, was one of the most celebrated musicians of all time. It is said that “Il Cannone” was initially lent to him by a wealthy businessman, but upon listening to Paganini’s awe-inspiring performance, the businessman insisted that he keep it. Genoa and Columbus have been sister cities since 1955. This exchange will be the apex of a series of successful cultural exchanges between the two cities, including the 2018 award-winning Thousand People exchange. As an art student, Michael De Feo drew a simple bloom that became a familiar presence in New York after hundreds of versions of it appeared on the city’s building walls. Twentyfive years later, these flowers have been sighted in more than 60 international cities. De Feo’s street works took a new direction when a guerrilla art collective provided him access to the cases that protect bus-shelter ads, enabling him to launch a beautiful campaign of his blossoms on top of fashion ads. Come hear about De Feo’s newest colorful and lively book, which reproduces more than 200 of his flower-inspired images and features diverse commentary. Barbara Haeger, OSU Associate Professor of History of Art and noted scholar of 16th- and 17th-century Dutch and Flemish art, presents an in-depth look at paintings in Life in the Age of Rembrandt, with focus on their often-startling realism. Haeger’s talk explores the significance of the convincing illusions presented by many 17th-century Dutch paintings and the aims of the artists who produced them. Among the latter is the Rembrandt pupil and prominent Dordrecht artist, Samuel van Hoogstraten, who wrote: “A perfect painting is like a mirror of nature that makes that which does not exist appear to exist, and thus deceives in a permissible pleasurable and praiseworthy manner.” Cost of this program is $20 for nonmembers and $5 for members. Since the inception of the program, hundreds of artists have received awards in a variety of disciplines, including the visual arts, crafts, film and video, creative writing, music composition and choreography/ movement arts. CELEBRATE ART MUSEUM DAY 5.19.19

For the tenth year, Columbus Museum of Art will join the Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD) and hundreds of institutions across North America in celebrating Art Museum Day. This year, free general admission at CMA and Pizzuti Collection of CMA recognizes the arts and the important role that art museums play in their communities. Visit both our locations and share your Art Museum Day experiences via social media, with the hashtag #ArtMuseumDay. AAMD’s Art Museum Day is an opportunity to focus attention on the role of art museums. The initiative is an extension of the International Council of Museums’s (ICOM) International Museum Day, a global program embracing all different types of museums. Last year, CMA—along with more than 150 other AAMD member museums of varying sizes across the United States, Canada, and Mexico—participated in Art Museum Day. A comprehensive list of participating AAMD member art museums will be available on the AAMD website. While AAMD’s Art Museum Day and ICOM’s International Museum Day is held each year on May 18, CMA and Pizzuti Collection of CMA will be celebrating Art Museum Day on May 19. “It is so terrific that Columbus Museum of Art, and for the first time Pizzuti Collection of the Columbus Museum of Art, will join so many peer institutions to celebrate the 10th anniversary of this important initiative,” said Christine Anagnos, Executive Director of AAMD. “Art Museum Day brings institutions and communities together to experience great art. And every year, I enjoy just

as much the opportunity to follow along with visitor’s #ArtMuseumDay posts, reflecting the ways in which they engage with art and art museums, and appreciate the diversity of human creativity.”

IN MEMORIA DONNA WASSERSTROM Donna Wasserstrom, a stalwart friend and generous supporter of CMA, passed away on February 10, 2019. Both the creation and the collection of artworks was Donna’s life-long consuming passion. From her early days as an artistic designer of window displays for the F & R Lazarus Company to her establishment of Shibui, an enterprise for which she created unique, beaded pieces of wearable art, Donna successfully combined her acumen for business with her passion to create. She also achieved national recognition for her comprehensive knowledge of Bakelite jewelry, about which she co-wrote an enduringly important reference work. It was her love of collecting, however, that came to define Donna in later life. In 1995 she purchased her first quilt, and over the next two decades, her interest in American quilted bedcovers consumed her. That first purchase ultimately became a collection of five hundred. In 2015 Donna donated her collection to the Columbus Museum of Art and generously established The Donna and Rodney Wasserstrom Quilt Collection. This donation of American quilted bedcovers is one

enduring legacy of this gift, one that will be analyzed and studied by textile scholars and appreciated by museum visitors for untold generations to come.
