FROM THE DIRECTOR This autumn we celebrate an historic moment. For the first time since our transformative gift from Ron and Ann Pizzuti, CMA will present an exhibition at both venues of our great museum. Before I share the details of this exciting exhibition, I’m proud to note that the “Best of Columbus 2019” issue of Columbus Monthly named the Pizzuti Collection “Best Gift” and Columbus Museum of Art “Best Museum.” Driving Forces: Selections from the Ann and Ron Pizzuti Collection features work from some 50 artists from more than 20 countries that responds to and helps shape contemporary culture. Work by artists who influenced the direction of 20th century art, such as Frank Stella and Susan Rothenberg, is joined by others who are helping to define what art means in the 21st century, including Nick Cave, Deana Lawson, Zanele Muholi, and Zhang Huan, among many others. Driving Forces will not only be a stunning show, but it will also be a climatic celebration of a local and global legacy in contemporary art that is a perfect way to round out our first year as one museum, two venues. To see how you can join the festivities, see page 27.

LET ART SPEAK TO YOU
PAGE 4
In October, we also celebrate by connecting with art and our community at one of central Ohio’s premier events, Art Celebration. This year we honor Arlene and Michael Weiss and the power of learning and creativity. Join us to hear keynote speaker Kaywin Feldman, director of the National Gallery of Art and former director of the Minneapolis Institute of Art, talk about her experience and how museums shape communities by opening their doors to dialogue and by engaging with the defining social issues of our era. More details on page 30.
2019
After many, many years, we finished Reflections: The American Collection of the Columbus Museum of Art, a book featuring 125 artworks from the Museum’s American collection. It is a gorgeous book that includes intersections essays—essays with differing perspectives on the same work of art by different authors—most of which were not written by art historians but instead by creative people of all kinds. Perspectives on George Bellows were contributed by acclaimed writer Joyce Carol Oates and Laurie Bellows Booth, an objects conservator and the painter’s granddaughter. The book also includes contributions by such notable authors as Adam Gopnik and Alan Trachtenberg. Come see me Monday, October 7 at 7:00 pm at Gramercy Books to hear more about the art and essays included in this monumental accomplishment. See page 24 for details.

RODIN: MUSES, SIRENS, LOVERS SELECTIONS FROM THE IRIS AND B. GERALD CANTOR COLLECTIONS 7.12.19 – 12.8.19
In 1900, Auguste Rodin — at the time 60 years old — was the most famous sculptor in the world, second historically only to Michelangelo. He was celebrated for the passion expressed by his subjects and their poses. His finished works in marble and bronze were made by a large workshop of assistants who carried out his wishes. Rodin believed that art should above all tell the truth, and his truth was rooted in what he called nature and in the contemporary world he saw about him. In telling this truth, Rodin revolutionized sculpture and brought it out of its past of centuries-old conventions into what today we know as modern art. His interest was in exploring the expressive power of the human body. He was brilliant in his restless creativity; it enabled him to endlessly combine existing fragments of earlier pieces into new pieces which described human emotion, vitality, and sexuality. He was recognized for his achievement while he was alive.

This exhibition has been organized and made possible by the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Foundation. It brings together forty Rodin bronzes that are now in seven different collections, two of which still bear the Cantor name and five that are in museums that received these Rodins as gifts from Mr. and Mrs. Cantor and their Foundation. The exhibition also features two works by Camille Claudel including her masterwork The Waltz. THANK YOU TO OUR FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS OF THIS EXHIBITION. Ivy Atoms is the winner and featured artist of the 2019 Columbus Comics Residency. Her 2018 book Pinky & Pepper Forever, a dark comedy about two young artists whose relationship continues into the afterlife, earned her a nomination for Outstanding Artist at the 2018 Ignatz Awards. It was also named one of the best LGBTQ graphic novels of 2018 by The Advocate. Each year, a committee of local comic critics, curators, and creators seek graphic artists from outside Columbus who demonstrate an experimental approach to creating comics and graphic novels. The four-week residency is designed to provide the winner with an opportunity to develop a work-in-progress and to exhibit their work at CMA. Ivy Atoms’ residency includes collaborations with Cartoon Crossroads Columbus (CXC) and CCAD. Ivy Atoms will

PERMANENT INTERACTION—CENTRAL EUROPEAN PAINTINGS AND DESIGNS BY JAROSLAV MALINA OPENS 9.15.19
PAGE 11
SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER
2019
Widely considered one of the top scene designers in the world, Jaroslav Malina (1937 – 2016) was a Czech scenographer and painter. According to the artist “[t]here is a permanent interaction between my painting and my design.” This exhibition explores the relationships between Malina’s theatre work and his introspective paintings, drawings, designs and lithographs. Organized by the Columbus Museum of Art with Guest Curator Joe Brandesky and featuring 32 paintings, designs, and lithographs, Permanent Interaction clearly illustrates the interpenetration of Malina’s creative imagination and his place place in both theatre design and fine art, both at home and abroad. The exhibition also features Malina’s relationship to other artists, especially Central Europeans, modernism in general, and the South Bohemian countryside. From his childhood during WW II, through Czechoslovakia’s shift from democracy to communism in February 1948, continuing through the years of Stalinism, postJaroslav Malina, The Ways to Paradise, 1973. Columbus Museum of Art, Ohio: Museum purchase by exchange. Stalinism, the Prague Spring, the period of Normalization, through to the Velvet Revolution and the years of democracy and capitalism, Malina lived, experienced, and created. Permanent Interaction places Malina’s work in the context of his influences, his time and place, and his changing worldview. The exhibition coincides with the publication of a new book about Jaroslav Malina’s work: Jaroslav Malina in Scenography and Painting, Karolinum Press/University of Chicago Publications; edited by Joe Brandesky and available in the CMA Museum Store.

WONDER SCHOOL
Unique Laboratory Preschool for Young Children & Educators Reflects on Pilot Year & Prepares for a Second Year of Exploration, Creativity, and Deep Thinking This time of year, many are settling into the swing of a new school year. This is true at CMA, too, where September marks the kick-off of our second year of Wonder School. Wonder School is a preschool that fosters creativity, critical inquiry, and collaboration for young children and the next generation of early childhood educators. Young children and students in the Early Childhood Development & Education program at Columbus State Community College learn throughout the Museum in a nationally unique partnership. Wonder School models best practices in early childhood education, and is transformative for the Columbus State student teachers, who will go on to teach young children throughout our communities.

2019
As we gear up for another year of exploration, creativity, and deep thinking, we pause to reflect on some of the highlights from our pilot year. We learned how Chef Laura Richmond from Schokko Café uses magic (and cool machines) to transform potatoes into French fries. We got inspired by the Alison Saar sculpture, Nocturne Navigator, which led us on a study of Harriet Tubman and others who see injustice and act for change. We explored the seasons and the natural world in Patty’s Garden. We learned from and with 15 student teachers from Columbus State, a process which included joy, laughter, tears and deep reflection. We created a community that extended well beyond our classroom, to include Miss Lisa at the front desk and the “Tarantula Pentantula” (also known as Dale Chihuly’s End of Days).

Blacklight Magic Thru 9.8.19 Location: CMA
Imaginative, psychedelic, and wildly creative works make for a genuinely far-out experience in Blacklight Magic. View more than 20 vintage works of blacklight art from the collection of Daniel Donahue, author of Ultraviolet: 69 Blacklight Posters from the Aquarian Age and Beyond, the first catalogue to celebrate the art of blacklight posters. These works reveal the role that blacklight posters played in the American counterculture of the late 1960s and early 1970s, and address environmental awareness, antiwar activism, women’s reproductive rights and the Black Power movement.
Jim Hodges Thru 9.22.19 Location: Pizzuti Collection of CMA
This exhibition features more than 30 works by the artist from the collection of Ron and Ann Pizzuti. A highly regarded figure in contemporary art, Hodges finds complex beauty in the fragile and fleeting, the mundane, and the timeless.
Evan Gruzis Thru 9.22.19 Location: Pizzuti Collection of CMA
Evan Gruzis’ works recall slick commercial graphics of the late eighties. Laced with a range of art-historical and pop-commercial references — from 18th Century Dutch still life and 1970s abstraction, to Patrick Nagel and Kai’s Power Tools — the seductive illusionism of Gruzis’ work is matched by a beguiling sense of nostalgia.
In a New Light: Alice Schille and the American Watercolor Movement Thru 9.29.19 Location: CMA
One of the first inductees to the Ohio Artists Hall of Fame, founded by the CMA Women’s Board, Alice Schille was largely forgotten until recently. In a New Light reestablishes her as an important artist of her time, one whose contributions helped to shape the trajectory of 20th-century American art. Featuring 50 works, the exhibition expands our understanding of the development of watercolor, its relationship to the evolution of art in the U.S., and the overlooked role that women artists played in that history.

Betty Zimmer was eight when she made her first museum visit to the Detroit Institute of Art (DIA), which was exhibiting the Thorne miniature rooms, a set of some 100 miniature models of rooms created between 1932 and 1940. She fell in love. That first museum visit to DIA was the beginning of a lifetime love of art. This year, Betty celebrates 50 years of service as a docent at the Museum. As an American studies docent from 1974 – 1978, Betty made multiple visits to area high schools to co-teach the history of American art with classroom teachers. Betty was a team leader four times: Evening Tours Leader (1974 – 1978) and Evening Weekend Team (1983 – 1984, 2001 – 2002, 2018 – 2019). As she celebrates her golden anniversary with us, we are grateful to Betty for her dedication to learning, art and the Museum.
