FROM THE DIRECTOR Welcome to 2020! This year at CMA holds myriad experiences, programs, and exhibitions to foster your creativity and connect you with art and each other. Our first exhibition to span both museum locations, Driving Forces, has indeed been a force. The Columbus Dispatch called the show “unique in its sheer scale” and “impressively global in range,” and proclaimed “Driving Forces, at each of its locations, is not to be missed.” Visitors have embraced the exhibition and shared their love of it on social media. Recent tweets include “I’m in love with the @columbusmuseum exhibit Driving Forces” and “[t]he number of Black/African American art and artists included in the collection was a joy to see.” Pizzuti Collection of CMA will also be buzzing about a new program we are offering there, Creative Workshops. This series of hands-on, maker workshops are led by local artists and creatives who will show you how to experiment with different art materials.

Driving Forces is the largest exhibition of work ever shown from the private collection of Ann and Ron Pizzuti and features works that not only respond to, but also help shape, contemporary culture. Below is an excerpt from the Director’s Forward in the exhibition catalogue.
Combining a wide-ranging, global perspective on the art of the last fifty years, with deep dives into the work of particular artists, Ann and Ron Pizzuti’s collection of contemporary art is a tremendous cultural asset, and one that holds great promise for the community of Central Ohio. The Columbus Museum of Art is therefore pleased to present Driving Forces: Contemporary Art from the Collection of Ann and Ron Pizzuti. Besides featuring some truly spectacular examples of contemporary art, one of the defining features of this exhibition is its intergenerational and international character. There are over seventy-five artists representing twenty-four countries in the exhibition. Work by artists who influenced the direction of twentieth-century art, such as Frank Stella and Susan Rothenberg, hangs alongside work by those who are helping to define what art means in the twenty-first century, including Nick Cave, Deana Lawson, Zanele Muholi, and Zhang Huan, among many others.
As collectors and patrons, the Pizzutis have played an important role in supporting the arts both in Columbus and around the country for many years…In 2013, after acquiring and renovating an 18,000 square foot building on Park Street in Columbus’ Short North district, Ann and Ron opened the doors of the Pizzuti Collection, a non-profit arts institution dedicated to sharing their collection with the Columbus community. Coinciding with this, the aptly titled, The Inaugural Exhibition: Looking Back and Looking Forward, displayed a wide arc of the collection, and highlighted major works by prominent artists. Many of them feature in Driving Forces, and at least one, Karel Appel’s Regards Singulier (1971) hangs precisely in the same location in recognition of that first exhibition. Over the next several years, exhibitions at the Pizzuti Collection like Cuba Forever, Us is Them, Robert Beck/ Robert Buck: States of America, Visions from India, and When Attitudes Become Chairs, gave Columbus a taste of critical, adventurous contemporary art from all over the world. On the fifth anniversary of the Pizzuti Collection, Ann and Ron announced the gift of the building and over forty works of art, many of them by Robert Buck, to the Columbus Museum of Art. Along with this, they also promised access to their broader collection for the foreseeable future.
Coming on the first anniversary of this important gift, Driving Forces is a significant step in the realization of that promise. It is the fourth exhibition the Museum has staged on Park Street, and the first to be presented at both the Broad Street and Park Street locations.

OBJECT/SET: GAURI GILL’S ACTS OF APPEARANCE THRU 2.2.20
For the past two decades, photographer Gauri Gill (born 1970, Chandigarh, India) has explored the relationship between photography and identity through long-term photographic studies. Acts of Appearance, which Gill began in 2015, highlights the importance of collaboration in her work. While traveling through the Indian state of Maharashtra, Gill learned about Bahora festivals that take place within regional villages. These festivities include processions where community members wear handmade masks depicting Hindu and local tribal gods, and characters from beloved myths. Gill noted that the masks featured archetypes who had little in common with the everyday lives of the people, many of whom experience acute food and water shortages and high rates of infant mortality. She wondered how it would be to narrow the gulf between the lives that we tend to celebrate and the lives that we experience. Gill posed her question to the fabricators of these masks: Subhas and Bhagvan Dharma Kadu, sons of a renowned traditional mask maker. What began as a question turned into a multi-stage, collaborative project set in Jawhar district, Maharashtra. Helmed by Gill and the Dharma Kadu brothers, a team of over 30 local artists and volunteers developed a new cast of characters focused on ordinary people, animals, and familiar objects—for example, a farmer, a dog, a bottle of Bisleri brand mineral water, and a book whose Hindi title translates in English to Stories of Ghosts. In early 2015, Gill began to photograph actor-volunteers wearing these new masks while performing routine activities. In 2017, curators of the international art expo Documenta invited Gill to debut Acts of Appearance.
work, Rector corresponded with Gill to ask if she would allow him to acquire this constellation of photographs as one work. Gill agreed to the acquisition, and to its singular designation as a ‘Documenta set.’ The dialogue between Gauri and Neil extends the collaborative spirit at the heart of Acts of Appearance. This exhibition marks the debut of Gill’s work in Columbus.

Early Elegance: Quilts 1790 – 1850 From the Donna and Rodney Wasserstrom Collection Opens 1.18.20 Location: CMA
Quilts are recognized as one of the most endearingly familiar of America’s decorative arts. Early Elegance continues to showcase CMA’s rich quarry of American quilted bedcovers and concentrates on the elemental transformations of the quilting arts in the young American nation. Presented as a tribute to Donna Wasserstrom, the exhibition features fabrics, techniques, and quilting styles that gave rise to an era of extraordinary textile refinement, and traces the evolution of the traditions that ultimately defined quilt making as a uniquely American art form.
Folk Art Road Trip: Travels with Modernism’s Utility Infielder Opens 2.1.20 Location: CMA
Folk Art Road Trip presents a stellar mix of vanguard and vernacular artworks from CMA’s collection in a visual narrative that celebrates how mainstream modern artists from Elie Nadelman to Andy Warhol, “found” and “invented” political, aesthetic, and spiritual utility for the art of their folk and self-taught counterparts.
Oppositions: Art and Power in the Vietnam Era Thru 2.2.20 Location: CMA

Jean Dubuffet: Anything but Boring Thru 5.3.20 Location: CMA
On loan from the Columbus collection of Jay and Jeanie Schottenstein, this group of five paintings by Jean Dubuffet (1901 – 1985) reflects the artist’s rejection of notions of “high art.” Mixing paint with sand, gravel, putty, and cement, the earthy, layered surfaces of Dubuffet’s canvases reveal deep cracks and rough textures.
Permanent Interaction: Central European Paintings and Designs by Jaroslav Malina Thru 7.19.20 Location: CMA

Lino Tagliapietra: Masterworks in Glass Thru 7.26.20 Location: CMA
This exhibition showcases works by Lino Tagliapietra from CMA’s collection and from local collectors. Lino is a leading glass artist of international renown whose works are distinguished by their brilliant color, distinctive shapes, and varied textures. His synthesis of traditional Venetian glassmaking techniques with a contemporary sensibility makes his work unique, as it consistently probes the boundaries between representation and abstraction, aligning his art with modern sculpture.

NEW PARTNERSHIP
Columbus Museum of Art is proud to present James. R. Hopkins’ Market Day in the Mountains, 1915 – 16, on loan from The Ohio State University Faculty Club. This loan marks the start of an ongoing partnership and each year the Faculty Club will lend one of their paintings by Hopkins to the Museum. The Faculty Club paintings are a fitting legacy as the artist studied and served as chair of Ohio State’s art department from 1923 – 47. The loan program also highlights the close bond between the CMA and OSU. James R. Hopkins (1877 – 1969) was an Ohio painter best known for his penetrating images of the inhabitants of the Appalachian mountain region of southeastern Kentucky. The group of paintings called the Cumberland Suite represents a significant and largely overlooked contribution to the history of American art. Painted from 1915 – 17, they bear striking similarity to American Scene Painting, an art movement that would emerge between World War I and II. CMA recently featured Hopkins’ work in the exhibition James R. Hopkins: Faces of the Heartland, on view in 2017 – 18. Hopkins Hall, located on the OSU Oval, bears Hopkins’s name. When creating the Cumberland Suite, Hopkins stayed at the Brunson Inn. His more than 20 memorable pictures depict a broad range of native inhabitants, from children to the elderly. However, nearly half of his works are devoted to the image of a single inhabitant: Andrew Melton Vanover. “Andy”

Mozart to Matisse is a series featuring chamber music performed by Columbus Symphony Orchestra (CSO) musicians paired with discussions of art related in theme by CMA curators. This program features Napoleon’s legacy in painting and sculpture, from heroic idealizations dating back to the French emperor’s rise to power to somber paintings chronicling his ultimate defeat following the unsuccessful Russian campaign. The latter was commemorated in Tschaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, first performed in 1882, a celebration of Russia’s victory over the French imperial invasion. Depictions of Napoleon spanned a range of artistic movements and styles, from the neo-classical to Romantic masterpieces to later depictions in a more naturalistic style. Cost of this program is $20 for nonmembers (includes general admission) and $5 for members. To buy tickets, please visit columbusmuseum.org, Events & Programs.

Cost of the program is $5 for nonmembers, free for members. To register, please call 614.629.0359 or visit columbusmuseum.org, Events & Programs.
Mozart to Matisse is a series featuring chamber music performed by Columbus Symphony Orchestra (CSO) musicians paired with discussions of art related in theme by CMA curators. In conjunction with the CSO’s performance of the opera Bluebeard’s Castle by Béla Bartók, featuring new sculptures in glass by Dale Chihuly, this program will include a brief illustrated talk on the art of Chihuly. The artist’s striking glass sculptures, organic in form and brilliantly vibrant in color, are known the world over. Among his well-known series are Seaforms, inspired by shells, sea urchins, and acquatic creatures, and Chandeliers, consisting of exuberant hanging sculptures. CMA’s work by Chihuly, Isola di San Giacomo in Palude, on view in Derby Court since 1999, is a visitor favorite. Cost of this program is $20 for nonmembers (includes general admission) and $5 for members. To buy tickets, please visit columbusmuseum.org, Events & Programs.
Joseph Brandesky, Martha W. Farmer Endowed Professor of Theatre at The Ohio State University in Lima, discusses the exhibition Permanent Interaction: Central European Paintings and Designs by Jaroslav Malina. An acclaimed stage set designer and painter, Malina’s work spans the turbulent decades following World War II in Czechoslovakia (today the Czech Republic and Slovakia), the shift to communism, the Prague Spring, the Velvet Revolution, and the restoration of democracy. Includes a screening of Master of Dramatic Space, an award-winning documentary on the artist’s expressive set designs, paintings, and prints. This program is free, registration requested. To register, visit columbusmuseum.org, Events & Programs.
This program is part of Chihuly Festival, a collaboration between CMA, CSO and Franklin Park Conservatory.

Many thanks to the following who have generously pledged support to help keep Sundays free for the next five years.
2020
As part of its commitment to be a different kind of museum in the 21st century — open, accessible, and relevant to all, last year we embarked on a campaign to raise more than $1,000,000 to keep Sundays Free for the next five years. Free Sundays is our calling card to the community and now accounts for nearly 40% of our annual attendance. We are proud that Free Sundays reduces financial barriers for everyone — but at the same time, we must also be fiscally responsible. The Free for the Future Campaign lets us do both! Through the generous support of the Columbus community, the Museum is able to keep Sundays free for everyone for the next five years. Many thanks to campaign chairs Kathryne and Kevin Reeves, Sheila and Gene Smith, and Peggy and Bob Walter.
