ART SPEAKS May/June 2013

FROM THE DIRECTOR

Wow! What a year 2013 has been so far. I am thrilled and proud to announce that the Museum has been named a winner of the National Medal for Museum and Library Service. The National Medal is the nation’s highest honor conferred on museums and libraries by the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS). It celebrates institutions that make a difference for individuals, families, and communities. Several years ago, we decided we wanted CMA to be a resource for our community and embraced the idea of becoming a visitor-centered Museum that fostered creativity and promised great experiences with great art for everyone. We’re incredibly honored to receive this prestigious award and excited that the work we’ve done is resonating with our community, our city, and our nation. On May 8, I travel to Washington D.C. to accept our National Medal at a special awards ceremony. Accompanying me will be Jeffrey Tucker, a former Art Lab student who is now a mentor for the program, and student at Columbus State. Jeffrey epitomizes the power of creativity and the deep, lifelong impact that arts programing can have on individual success and personal fulfillment. Previous winners of the National Medal include our own Columbus Metropolitan Library, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, and The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. We’re proud to be one of a handful of cities that can say we have both a National Medal winning library and museum.

I hope you have seen the extraordinary national attention we’ve received for our Mark Rothko: The Decisive Decade, 1940 – 1950 and Strings Attached: The Living Tradition of Czech Puppets exhibitions. Both The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times featured Mark Rothko. Strings Attached was featured in The Wall Street Journal “Icons” section of a Saturday edition that in print and online reached more than 5 million subscribers. Amazing recognition of the great art experiences we are creating every day at CMA. And last but not in any way least….drum roll please…..we’re a stamp! In celebration of the anniversary of the Armory Show, the United States Postal Service issued twelve “Modern Art in America” forever stamps. One of those stamps features John Marin’s Sunset, Maine Coast (1919), a masterwork that was a gift from Ferdinand Howald and has been part of our collection since 1931. Whoever said that thirteen is an unlucky number, has not visited the Columbus Museum of Art this year!

CMA HONORS AND AWARDS

COLUMBUS MUSEUM OF ART NAMED NATIONAL MEDAL WINNER! We are honored to share that the Columbus Museum of Art has been named a winner for the nineteenth annual National Medal for Museum and Library Service. The National Medal is the nation’s highest honor conferred on museums and libraries by the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS). IMLS is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s 123,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. Including 2012 winners, CMA is only one of 122 institutions to have received this honor.

“The Columbus Museum of Art is committed to championing new and different ways of thinking and doing. We strive to provide opportunities for people to cultivate and discover the value of creativity in their own Our Critical Works program provides rich art experiences for middle schools with no arts programming.

lives,” said Nannette V. Maciejunes, Executive Director, Columbus Museum of Art. “Embracing these ideas has allowed us to grow as a museum and to become, to my great pride, a National Medal winning institution.”

Selected from thirty-three finalists, CMA received our National Medal in recognition of service to the community and for making a difference in the lives of individuals, families, and communities. We have been specifically recognized for our programs such as Art of Analysis, Artful Adventures, Sparking Imaginations, and Art Lab that contribute positively to Central Ohio.

CMA HONORS AND AWARDS

“The Columbus Museum of Art is on the cutting edge of education. They have provided teachers of Columbus and teachers from across the state with innovative research and best practices, that not only excite me as a teacher, but my students respond to all that I bring back to them. I am learning how art, which captures our most human condition, can be used to grow our minds. These lessons I know, will make Columbus a stronger city! Stronger students create a stronger city. THANKS C.M.A.!!!” — Janis Farley, Educator

Executive Director Nannette Maciejunes and Jeffery Tucker will represent CMA at the National Medal at a ceremony held in Washington, D.C. on May 8, 2013. Jeffery Tucker is a former Art Lab student, now a mentor for the program, who is currently attending Columbus State Community College.

After the ceremony, CMA will also receive a visit from StoryCorps, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to recording, preserving, and sharing, the stories of Americans from all backgrounds and

MARK ROTHKO THE DECISIVE DECADE 1940-1950 CLOSING MAY 26 — DON’T MISS IT!

CMA celebrates one of the world's most influential and best-known artists of the twentieth-century with the exhibition Mark Rothko: The Decisive Decade 1940-1950. By focusing on works less often explored, Mark Rothko shows how the artist was influenced by Surrealism, the universal significance of myth, and the transformative power of color. Mark Rothko was part of a group of American abstract artists was known as The Irascibles. In addition to Rothko, other artists in The Irascibles included Willem de Kooning, Hedda Sterne, William Baziotes, Jackson Pollock, Clyfford Still, Robert Motherwell, and Theodoros Stamos, among others. The Irascibles wrote an open letter to the president of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, protesting the museum’s exhibition American Painting Today 1950. The exhibition included no examples of abstract expressionist painting, and the group believed that the show’s curators promoted only the most conservative kind of American painting and were “hostile to advanced art.” In 1951, fourteen of the artists assembled for a now-iconic photograph, published by Life magazine in an article called ”Irascible Group of Advanced Artists Lead Fight Against Show.” This photo, and other subsequent media coverage of the protest, gave the artists notoriety, and helped to popularize the term Abstract Expressionist.

CMA WELCOMES NEW CURATOR TYLER CANN After an extensive national search, the Columbus Museum of Art has announced the appointment of Tyler Cann as the Museum’s new Associate Curator of Contemporary Art. “Tyler brings a fresh eye to CMA’s permanent collection along with solid scholarship and a broad international outlook,” said Nannette Maciejunes. “He joins us at a particularly exciting moment in the Museum’s history. Our upcoming expansion promises the first permanent galleries devoted to our late-twentieth-century and contemporary collection in the Museum’s new wing.”

Associate Curator of Contemporary Art Tyler Cann.

“I’m thrilled to join CMA at such a critical moment for the institution.” Cann said. “The opportunity to help shape its collection and ambitious programming is fantastic. Columbus itself has such a vibrant, forward-looking culture as well, and I look forward to being part of that.” Born in Los Angeles, Cann completed his undergraduate studies in art history at the University of California, Berkeley and continued as a PhD candidate in the department of History of Art + Architecture at Harvard University.

As the Associate Curator of Contemporary Art, Cann will be responsible for the growth of CMA’s contemporary art program, including acquisitions, exhibitions, publications, and programs. He will also work closely with The Contemporaries, a membership group that supports the awareness, appreciation, and acquisition of contemporary art and photography in our community and annually purchases a work of art for CMA’s permanent collection.

Special Program: Color Fields: A Brief History from Rothko to Now Thursday, May 23, 7:00 PM

Cann most recently held the position of curator at Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, UK, where he worked with artists such as Bedwyr Williams, Boyd & Evans, Sarah Browne, Stuart Whipps and Gillian Wearing. Prior to Ikon, Cann was a curator at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery in New Zealand, where he developed numerous research-based exhibitions on the artist and experimental filmmaker Len Lye. These include Chronosome, The Cosmic Archive, All Souls Carnival, and, with Mercedes Vicente, Points of Contact: Jim Allen, Len Lye and Hélio Oiticica. At the Govett-Brewster, Cann also showed the work of artists Phil Dadson, Tessa Laird, Dane Mitchell, Andy Thomson and Daniel von Sturmer.

Come meet our new Associate Curator of Contemporary Art Tyler Cann and be part of his first public program here at CMA. What can a color mean? Highlighting select works from the Rothko exhibition, the CMA collection and beyond, this talk by Tyler Cann will follow some of the ways artists have invested color with aesthetic, philosophical and political significance in the last sixty years. No registration requested, free with admission.

MASTERPIECE POSTAGE CMA’S MARIN PAINTING FEATURED ON STAMP In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the groundbreaking Armory Show in New York City, the United States Postal Service issued Modern Art in America forever stamps with masterworks dating from 1912-1931. John Marin’s Sunset, Maine Coast (1919) from CMA’s collection, a gift from Ferdinand Howald, is among the twelve important artists and works chosen for the stamp pane. The International Exhibition of Modern Art, known as the Armory Show because it was held at the 69th Regiment Armory Building, opened in New York City on Feb. 17, 1913. The exhibition is considered one of the greatest watershed events in the country’s art world, as it introduced the experimental styles of the European vanguard to Americans, and, for many American artists specifically, it served as a catalyst for them to develop their art in new directions. Including more than a thousand works of European and American modernism, the exhibition was met as strongly with protest and ridicule as it was with enthusiasm and reverence. John Marin (1870 – 1953), long ranked with the greatest watercolorists of this country, was among the first wave of American abstract painters. Indeed, in the 1920s, he was the dominant force toward abstraction. A perfectionist, Marin proved that watercolors need not be sedate landscapes but could instead explode with vitality. In addition to seascapes, he also is known for his dramatic views of skyscrapers such as the New York Series (1927) acquired by CMA in 2010. The other artists featured on the Modern Art in America pane include Stuart Davis, Charles Demuth, Aaron Douglas, Arthur Dove, Marcel Duchamp, Marsden Hartley, Gerald Murphy, Georgia O’Keeffe, Man Ray, Charles Sheeler, and Joseph Stella.

Modern Art in America forever stamps are available at U.S. Post Offices and can be viewed on Facebook at facebook.com/USPSStamps, or on the website beyondtheperf.com/2013-preview.
