Floral Art - shape, color, form, beauty Colorful, delicate, strong, complex, simple - all descriptions that can be applied to a single flower. Our connection to flowers, the shapes, colors, smells, and emotions are awakened in our interactions with flowers and are the essence and nuance of Floral Art. The intricacies of a single flower can be immense and overlooked by many of us. Floral Artists use the colors and complexities that nature has given them to create a recognition and understanding of the complicated simplicity of flowers.
vas. The boldness of floral composition to reflect emotional responses is all part of the energy of floral appreciation. Peggy Vineyard likes to “exaggerate the flower shapes and change them in a non-traditional way, while capturing the beauty with the colors that I use”, while Paula Montgomery uses a brush or palette knife to boldly apply layers of paints or paper to create visual poems of flowers. Says Montgomery, “I am looking for dominate [sic] shapes to emerge and become the foundation of my poetic paintings.”
One of the most alluring attributes of flowers, and as a consequence Floral Art, is the seemingly never-ending shapes, sizes, and colors of the subject matter. The variety of discernible characteristics in floral subject matter enthralls viewers and ensures a continuous intrigue of florals on paper and can-
The poetic movements within Floral Art can be captured in the varying shapes and colors that flowers naturally bequeath upon artists. “I love working to capture the essence of something as ephemeral as the movement and emotion contained in a flower” says

Eileen Hendren. “The uniqueness of the shapes and how, in an arrangement, those shapes play off of and intensify one another intrigues me.” The manner in which shapes and forms play off one another flow throughout a floral structure, from top to bottom.
And with flowers there is ample opportunity to overlook the details and nuances. “A delicate flower... softness of a petal... how light shapes the blossom” are all subjects that draw Allison Chambers to paint flowers. The nuance of the flower is something that artists seeks to display on canvas. The use of lights and careful composition between the background and foreground creates, as Chambers states, a “bouquet of balance” as delicate as the flower itself.
While many viewers admire and appreciate petal structures one cannot forget the extrinsic features that occupy the all too important part of floral structures as a whole. As part of an arrangement, the stems, buds, thorns, and vases all accentuate the colorful endings of flowers. “I find the stems in water to me as interesting to paint as the flowers” says Deborah Hill. The interaction of floral structure and it’s surroundings enchant the viewer to appreciate and focus on details.
There is something intrinsically human about flowers - the delicate nature of its existence, the softness of its touch, all intertwined with the strength and sturdiness that allows it to withstand the winds of change and varying temperatures - to a certain degree, much like us. Our fascination with flowers are uniquely captured in the varied interpretations of Floral Art. The use of colors, composition, and light all evoke emotional responses that elevate our appreciation for the art form.
Focusing on details is a floral subject matter that creates mystery and intrigue. Details are elements intrinsically interwoven into the shapes and colors of flowers. Bayberry Lanning Shah enjoys getting up close “with macro photography” to capture the inner workings of a floral piece. “I will sometimes play with colors in order to highlight the form of a subject and further distract from what the viewer knows as a common flower”, says Shah. The focus on the internal structure of a flower is “worth of note and contemplation”, says Stephanie Neely who uses her work to portray a flower’s “internal geography”, as Neely states. Depictions of patterns create an ambiance of discovery, deepening the appreciation of the floral complexity we view on paper and canvas.

Interwoven intrinsic elements are part and parcel of many floral pieces. Tom Potocki, through his expressive works, is “interested in getting below the surface of what we see around us and expressing that mysterious energy.” This mysterious energy is what drives many viewers to appreciate florals from an emotional standpoint and can be created through a myriad of stylistic tendencies. Indeed, artists seek to “capture the hidden beauty, bring to light that which is overlooked”, says Donna Slade.

Atlanta Collects: Contemporary Art Treasures from Atlanta’s Private Collectors ATLANTA - The Breman Museum presents the second phase of its groundbreaking art shows from private collections with Atlanta Collects Contemporary Art: Treasures from Atlanta’s Private Collectors, March 13 running through Sunday, June 11, 2017.

The thread tying these works together is the Jewish collectors of Atlanta,” he praised their role in supporting emerging artists and for making a difference in the local art scene.
“The contemporary show highlights works for the 21st century that really is the art of our time, of this generation,” said exhibition curator Dr. William Eiland, Director of the Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia. “The idea was to investigate collectors and show the strength of collecting within the Jewish community in Atlanta.”
“This is a perfect chance to see the quality of what these collectors have brought together,” Dr. Eiland said. “It will be unlike anything else they’ll see. It’s an exhibition that really does bring together disparate works in an interesting way on the theme of collecting.” About The William Breman Jewish Heritage Museum
Rarely-seen works by Chuck Close, Thornton Dial, Lauren Lambrecht, Radcliffe Bailey and others form part of this brilliant exhibition, following on the heels of the first Atlanta Collects show which represented art movements of the 19th and 20th centuries. Aaron Berger, Executive Director of the Breman Museum, said, “What I like about this show is that it represents ‘the art of the now.’ The works displayed are by artists who may not necessarily be household names but are forging new ground in art worldwide.” Berger said the caliber of the art on display is “truly exceptional.”

Atlanta Collects Contemporary exhibitor Lisa Brill said the show “is so visually exciting, colorful, and multi-dimensional. There is glass, photography, a couple of large installation pieces. There is a Sandy Skoglund piece done with jelly beans that will spark the senses. We have a sculpture by Richard Jolley that represents the best of what he does. We also have a piece in there by British painter Fiona Rae. I just think this show is going to knock people’s socks off.” Berger said the exhibition is only on for 12 weeks “and then it’s gone forever.” He calls it “a rare opportunity to see contemporary

Ellison continued his education at Georgia State University, graduating with a master’s degree in visual arts. In 1985, he moved to teach at South Carolina State College (now South Carolina State University) and later started an artist-in-residence program and taught at Clafin College. His passion for printmaking flourished, and he developed a style that layered ink thickly enough to create texture as well as bright colors.
Prints by Atlantan Michael Ellison Athens, GA – The Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia will present the exhibition “Michael Ellison: Urban Impressions” from February 18 through May 21, 2017. Organized by Shawnya Harris, Larry D. and Brenda A. Thompson Curator of African American and African Diasporic Art, it will feature block prints and collage works on paper by the Atlanta based printmaker. This exhibition is part of the museum’s commitment to presenting single-artist shows by under-recognized African American artists.
In 1991 an electrical fire badly disfigured the artist. As he began to recover and re-learn how to make prints, he created works with striking colors focusing on scenes of isolation and community in urban landscapes. The Coca-Cola Corporation, the Federal Reserve, Georgia Pacific, and the High Museum of Art all collected Ellison’s work. He enjoyed success through the end of the decade, creating a mural in the Five Points district of Atlanta and producing solo exhibitions at the Hammonds House Galleries and Georgia Institute of Technology. Ellison passed away from heart complications at the age of 48 in 2001.
Ellison was born in New York City but grew up in Collier Heights, a middle-class African American neighborhood in southwest Atlanta. He studied art at Atlanta College of Art on the GI Bill, where he learned printmaking. The title of the exhibition comes from the way in which one of Ellison’s early printmaking instructors, Norman Wagner, described Ellison’s subject matter, referring to his prints as “urban landscapes and/or impressions.”

Zuckerman Museum of Art | Ruth V. Zuckerman Pavilion Thru July 30 Kennesaw, GA - In this exhibition, Atlanta-based artist Maria Artemis presents a selection of abstract sculptures by Ruth Zuckerman. These sculptures, created from a variety of materials, are juxtaposed with some of Zuckerman’s photographs to explore what may have informed her artistic choices and aesthetic. A visual conversation between Artemis and Zuckerman is conducted by the positioning of one of Artemis’ own sculptures alongside a set of Ruth Zuckerman’s stone working tools, acquired by Artemis from the Bureau of Cultural Affairs Materials for the Arts. UNC Chapel Hill Time Will Tell: Selected Works by the MFA Class of 2017 Ackland Art Museum April 28–June 4, 2017 Time Will Tell examines how the exhibition’s contributors, the 2017 Master of Fine Arts candidates at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, use their artworks to explore time as an indefinite period rather than as a measurement of specific durations. These seven artists - Luke Firle, Wayne Marcelli, Joy Meyer, Vanessa Murray, Emily J. Smith, Louis Watts, and Lamar Whidbee - slow, stop, fold, or remove aspects of the passage of time in order to contemplate and complicate the personal, the universal, and the art historical. They deploy the idea of time as an expansive drift that requires subtle, quiet consideration. Time Will Tell is curated by Jeff Bell, visual artist (MFA, UNC-Greensboro, 2008) and museum manager at 21c Museum Hotel, Durham.

UGA Students Push Boundaries Athens, GA – Since the 1940s, the Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia has shown the work of master of fine arts degree candidates at the Lamar Dodd School of Art. This year’s exit show takes place April 8 to May 14, with a free opening reception at the museum April 7 at 5:30 p.m. The exhibition will be up through UGA commencement, with a slightly longer run than usual. This year’s graduates present a wide variety of work, diverse in medium, theme, scale and style. She is passionate about the history of oil painting, the way it fills your senses, “the way it smells, the feel and the ingredients.” What inspires Eileen is the incredible richness of art history worldwide, its evolution over time, and the passion and sense of self that artists invest in their work. She’s also inspired by the knowledge that she will never reach the end of her artistic journey. Eileen loves to travel and has painted scenes from all over the world, or as she puts it, “all places and anywhere stories happen.”
May 4-27 311 Gallery StudioRED is the coming together of three artists; Rhonda Gardner, Eileen Hendren and Debbie Robbins, with a love of painting, learning, friendships with each other, and the need of a place to create (and store their ever growing collections of art supplies!). We all come from creative careers; Rhonda and Debbie have degrees in interior design, Eileen in architecture. Our spark for painting had been contained for years under a lot of straight lines and paint samples!
Debbie Robbins. Debbie has fallen in love with many varied mediums of artistic expression. She especially loves working in acrylics, the fast drying time of the paint allows for experimentation with layers and textures using a variety of gel mediums. She continues these experiments in her encaustic work, taking advantage of the wax’s transparency to create rich, layered pieces. In her studio, she also works in watercolor, alcohol ink, charcoal, and colored pencil. Debbie’s work ranges from intimate portraits of the scenes she encounters to large abstract paintings.
Rhonda Gardner. Rhonda enjoys painting figures and works primarily in oils, but regularly creates works in acrylic, graphite, pen, and watercolor. Her use of figures is not always the primary focus but rather a part of a larger narrative. A love of blending, layering, and the use of rich color can be witnessed in all of her work. Rhonda’s journey continues as she explores new challenges and learning opportunities. “Producing art for me is as much about the continuing journey of trying new things and developing new skills as it is about producing a successful finished piece.”

this May as part of the annual guest invitational exhibition. Each year the gallery chooses a small group of artists who have stood out to the Curatorial Committee. The 2017 Guest Invitational includes painters Kenia Brea, Chieko Murasugi, mixed media installation artist Bryant Holsenbeck, and sculptor Jason Smith, each chosen based on the quality of their work, and the range of new and exciting projects that they are creating. Each brings a very unique, contemporary voice to their work and to FRANK. Presented in the Michael and Laura Brader-Araje Community Outreach Gallery, Cultural Fabric explores youth identity through quilts and portraiture. Local artists, led by Project Director Hollie Taylor, alongside Ida Lavern-Couch and Barbara Tyroler, have paired up with local students to explore issues of identity, culture, and community through a series of art experiences, ranging from mentoring opportunities to workshops and field trips. The multifaceted project culminates in a final public exhibition, Cultural Fabric, at FRANK Gallery. The exhibition will feature quilt portraits the student participants captured by Tyroler, as well as personal portraits created by participants, accompanied by words describing the teens’ lives and identities. With special thanks to the Town of Chapel Hill Parks & Recreations Cultural Arts Division, Volunteers for Youth, and The Corner Teen Center.

Decades later, the prolific artist creates works of magnetic energy in purely abstract, non representational splashes of color, as well as expressionist abstract landscapes, and abstracted hearts, and florals. The refreshing energy of the season has inspired a new body of work revolving around abstracted florals. The new series incorporates techniques that have sprung up in his recent experimentations on jute and linen, using gradient backgrounds and ‘interference’ colors. Jonas paints the spirit of the flowers in a spontaneous gesture, which never fails to convey the feeling of nature, expressed through an element of trusting the process. This work is a celebration of the moment, the here and now, a shout out to the vitality in nature’s growth patterns. The thick, rich and juicy paint is applied boldly, showcasing the raw energy that Jonas pours onto the canvas. A rainbow of petals and buds are set against colorful gradient backgrounds. Three-dimensional collisions of paint sit on top of grainy jute canvas, creating richly textured surfaces for light and color to dance on. The interference paints, developed by Golden Artist Colors, allow elements in the art to shift hew and saturation as the angle of the viewer changes.

Jonas Gerard Floral Reflections As the winter hibernation makes room for the rejuvenation of Spring, the promise of something new always allows for optimistic attitudes to take root. Expressionist Jonas Gerard started his 50+ year career as a working artist with representational oil paintings in the 1960’s, developing a highly successful portrait business in the 1980’s. As his waiting list for portrait work grew, he slowly felt trapped by a success that no longer fed his soul. More and more Gerard was drawn into the exciting world of non-objective, abstract art, favoring acrylic paints on canvas.
Jonas Gerard Fine Art invites the public to visit Asheville during the River Arts District Studio Stroll, May 20-21.
