he Charleston Artist Guild was formed in 1953 by seven artists. We painted together, took classes together, and tried to find a place to exhibit and sell our work. Eventually we incorporated, and became a not for profit Guild with a continuing mission to promote the practice, teaching, and appreciation of Fine Arts in the Greater Charleston area. The Guild holds monthly meetings with free programs and offers workshops and critiques for our members and the public. Our seven members have grown to almost six hundred. We also have a place to exhibit and sell our own art. The Guild owns and operates a gallery that not only serves over seventy guild artists, but the artists in turn serve the Guild’s mission by making donations to the Guild’s outreach programs. The gallery is in the heart of the famous French Quarter. Plan to drop by and view the creative works of our members.

One-hundred artists. Fifty exhibitions. Twenty-two members. Five years. Just one FRANK.
Over the past five years, FRANK has enriched the town of Chapel Hill through dynamic programming and vibrant exhibitions. Join us to celebrate those individuals who make it all happen. Our Fifth Annual Members’ Spotlight exhibition showcases the 22 member artists of the Franklin Street Arts Collective and what they do best – make art. For collectors and art lovers alike, each artist presents a body of work. This special exhibition includes photography, painting, ceramics, woodwork, mixed media, and jewelry, covering all that FRANK has to offer. In addition, FRANK’s Community Outreach Program collaborates on a range of events that create partnerships between a diverse population of artists and the community, with an emphasis on inclusivity. With the Orange County Autism Society, Frank Gallery and seven local organizations celebrate Autism Awareness. Please join us for two events at FRANK. Sunday, April 12, 4:00-7:00 pm, we host a reception of the NC Art Therapy Institute exhibition of children’s art work from the Orange County schools. Wednesday, April 15, 6:009:00 pm, we sponsor a creativity and diversity “Conversation,” a musical performance, and reception. Our participants include advocates, trainees, artists, musicians, and their mentors, from the Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities and UNC-CH, and InFocus, Inc., a non-profit advocacy organization. Jessie Benson
www.starfruitworks.com
Live as the Bird . . . This is the feeling portrayed in Jessie Benson’s nature-inspired beeswax and oil paintings. Carved into a bed of several layers of beeswax, delicate line work brings to life intricate birds and their beloved egg-filled nests. Trees Hummingbird also often find their way into Jessie’s pieces as do paths leading to unseen places. Jessie will also sometimes incorporate her original love haikus into her paintings. Jessie’s work allows the natural texture of the beeswax to come forward and offers the viewer visual and tactile interest. Many of her paintings are monochromatic with black oil atop pale yellow beeswax lending the piece a wide spectrum of tonality. Other pieces feature the addition of a second color such as the blue of an egg, the red of a flower, or the green of a fern. Shared among all of Jessie’s paintings is the theme of love, love for family and friends, love for one’s true self, love for nature, and love for life. Each painting is an expression of this love and gratitude for the beauty of life.

Simon Griffiths has been a professional photographer in Raleigh since 1981 when he was a sophomore at NC State University. He has photographed everything from sports to celebrities. Over time, Simon’s work has evolved, taking a more artistic approach to the medium‌even to the point of making the leap from camera and pixels to paint, brush, and canvas. Simon is greatly inspired by the natural ability of his 15 year old daughter, Gillian, who draws from memory and imagination. She brings her subjects to life with the maturity of someone far older than her years.
Gillian Griffiths
Gillian and Simon have found their niche in completely different genres and media. Their love of art has drawn them together and both have benefited from the others experiences and insights. Their work, hung together, is inspiring to all who see it. Conversations with Artists: with
Lori White
I feel most alive when I’m outside, walking, observing, and being in awe of this planet. For me, early mornings and late afternoons, called the “golden hours” are best. This is when the sun is low in the sky and its light is raking across Well Aged Lab the myriad objects that dot our world, creating wonderful long shadows. The light is softer because it travels through more atmosphere. Colors take on an enhanced chroma that is a challenge and a joy to try to capture in paint. As an extreme morning person, being near the ocean or a local lake as dawn is breaking is the absolute best way to start the day. Time is short before the rising sun burns off the mist. My fog series attempts to evoke those transient, magical mornings when heavy fog can transform the most mundane lake or stream into an otherworldly place and time. Late afternoons on a farm or vineyard come in a close second. The low sun back lights trees, grapevines, or basking animals and just begs to be painted. Then dusk comes and colors slowly fade. So I turn in early, anticipating the coming dawn, which, oddly, is my middle name.

art - i - facts After 1919, Piet Mondrian only painted using horizontal and vertical straight lines in the colors red, yellow, and blue. It was also at this time that he did not want his paintings to have visible brush strokes, thus began the creation of the Mondrian paintings that look as thought they were created by a machine.
