Pieces of Me, oil and texture on panel, 36” x 48”

Deborah Sisco “Pieces of Me” is a journey into the mind of an artist. What makes an artist ‘tick’, what they dream about at night and how those dreams end up on a canvas. It is about an emotional journey and how color impacts the journey. “Color gives meaning to the world we live in, it defines our emotion, our feelings, and our moods”. Leave all of your preconceived ideas about art at home and have a love affair with color that will arouse your senses.

www.deborahsiscoart.com

19 Abstract Expressionism is defined as pure painting, absorbed with possibility through experiments in color and form. After a fifty year journey, Sterling Edwards surrendered control of his talent and used his vast knowledge of color, design, and composition to leap into Abstract Expressionism. He sees this new work as intuitive and spontaneous; “They’re all about first impressions and providing the viewer with enough visual information to stimulate their interpretive mind.”

The CIA, the Cold War, and Abstract Expressionism by Susan K Jones When I Goggled Abstract Expressionism, I found many links to the CIA and the Cold War. My curiosity was aroused! I was a child during the Cold War; I remember the bomb shelters and Russia. The Cold War was so much more; it was an idea, an image and a propaganda war, a war of the heart and mind. Russia did not allow freedom of expression in any form thus its art, Socialist Realism, was stylized, rigid, and confined. The CIA saw Abstract Expressionism as the ideal opportunity to show the world our wealth of creativity, intellectual freedom, and cultural power; our superiority over Russia. Because most Americans did not like non-realistic art, the CIA’s project was Top Secret. Millionaires like Nelson Rockefeller (MOMA), William Paley (CBS & CIA), and Julius Fleischmann served as conduits for the CIA’s money; serving as the head of foundations set up by the CIA to promote US culture.

While the CIA’s promotion certainly didn’t hurt, critics strongly feel that Abstract Expressionism would have flourished on its own. Mr. Edwards’ exhibition, Watermedia Abstractions invites you the viewer to become a major player in his creative process and experience the freedom of Abstract Expressionism.

Ford Smith in Roswell For more than a dozen years, world-class and critically-acclaimed landscape artist, Ford Smith, continues to be both an innovator and institution for the Atlanta art scene. Represented by fine art galleries from New York to Beijing, this artist-owned namesake gallery in Ford’s hometown of Roswell, Georgia features new original paintings directly from his studio, alongside premier hand-painted editions. Ford lives and paints in his home studio located just a few miles away. The gallery is operated by Ford’s wife, Cristi, a veteran retail marketing professional who also writes for major art industry publications. Ford Smith is widely recognized for reinventing the modern landscape. His sense of nature is not a Romantic’s wild and angry universe. To the contrary, his paintings reflect a palpable optimism and vibrant confidence. The easy precision, subtlety and repose of his paintings are likely derived from an Asian aesthetic learned from an elderly Japanese master in Ford’s early years while his military family was stationed overseas. Fantastical trees, light and fractured reflections are classic Ford Smith, however his talent and

“This is our 4th Ford Smith Gallery. We love having this stage for Ford’s work, particularly in our hometown,” Cristi says, “With more than 1500 square feet of exhibit space, we can showcase the breadth of his talent, and Ford feels the freedom to explore artistically. He likes to try different techniques and discover new ways of interpreting nature.” Ford Smith Fine Art visitors receive a personal, in-depth experience of Ford’s artistic genius and feel the untethered nature of the art that comes with having this dedicated exhibit. 1. Workshop Dates: April 19-21, 9am-5pm Throughout the month of April, the Beaufort Art Market presents a combined exhibit featuring the photography of Cher and Terry Brown of St. Augustine, Florida, and works by students of The Tiller School in Beaufort. Cher and Terry combines both photographer’s perspectives into ones single vision, found in the body of their work. The couple focus their photoraphy on the natural environment and often capture their subjects from new and thought-provoking angles. Terry is an award-winning writer and photojournalist, a storyteller at heart. Cher began her study of photography at a young age and was immediately drawn to the outdoors, with a passion for capturing botannicals and Southeastern landscapes. The Tiller School is a small charter elementary school that is dedicated to fostering curiosity, creativity, confidence, and competence through an innovative academic and social curriculum. In addition to their rigorous academic curriculum, the school prioritizes students’ exposure to the arts. Students actively engage in music and visual arts studies, frequently sharing their work in the community. Tiller School art students are given opportunities to display their work in public settings and some have won awards and recognition for their contributions. Learn more about photographers Cher and Terry Brown at their website, www.terryandcherbrown.com, and about The Tiller School at tillerschool.org.

Natural Pigments, suppliers of hard-tofind, high quality natural art materials, have spent years developing a technical workshop to teach skills that are not taught in art school and universities; a thorough understanding of artist’s materials and tools, what they are designed to do, when to chose them and how to provide considerable longevity to your finished work. This workshop covers the most important aspects of painting that have proven to be the best practices over the centuries. The workshop consists of lectures accompanied entirely by projected digital images, questions and answers and art materials demonstrations. No materials are required. The limited class size allows each attendee to receive personal attention and have questions answered specific to their needs. Due to the popularity of this workshop and its limited class size, those interested are encouraged to register as soon as possible. Tuition for this three-day workshop is $450. Artists can learn more about this workshop at BeaufortArtMarket.com, or by calling Joy at 252-838-1896. Rana Rochat’s latest body of work furthers her pursuit of evocative, fluid mark-marking in the encaustic medium. Her paintings are not bound by material choice, however, as the artist continues to push her visual vocabulary with richly modeled surface textures in delightful contrast to sprawling arrays of drips and lyrical lines.

Matt McConnell is a sculptor and designer, born and raised in Charlotte, NC. He moved to Raleigh in 1990 to attend the NC State College of Design, graduating with degrees in Architecture and Industrial Design.

In the words of the artist: “The forms and marks are natural and seemingly familiar, yet they are nonspecific, not easy to label. I intend for them to be fluid, without fixed meanings. Within an environment of deep light and color, my goal is to create an experience that is pre-verbal, promoting pictorial awareness prior to any explicit formatting of perceptual experiences into narratives. I like to think of my paintings as visual poems.” Rochat’s work can be found in collections world-wide, including: Alston & Bird, Atlanta; the Dubai Consulate; Pacific Peninsula Group, San Francisco, CA; Saks Fifth Avenue, Miami, FL.

Fascinated with geometry and natural forms since childhood, the expression of these elements remains a consistent focus of his work. He works to capture and express the energy of time, motion, growth, and invisible forces such as wind and gravity. Exploration of this vision often includes transformation and repetition where the rhythm and flow intertwine to create three dimensional elements, often inspired by helix, wave, plant, and animal forms. This passion for form and layering, combined with a drive for exploring new materials and fabrication systems, has produced a diverse portfolio of projects created for both public and private spaces in a wide variety of materials, including metals, glass, fabric, plastics, wood, and concrete.
