19 Abstract Expressionism is defined as pure painting, absorbed with possibility through experiments in color and form. After a fifty year journey, Sterling Edwards surrendered control of his talent and used his vast knowledge of color, design, and composition to leap into Abstract Expressionism. He sees this new work as intuitive and spontaneous; “They’re all about first impressions and providing the viewer with enough visual information to stimulate their interpretive mind.”

The CIA, the Cold War, and Abstract Expressionism by Susan K Jones When I Goggled Abstract Expressionism, I found many links to the CIA and the Cold War. My curiosity was aroused! I was a child during the Cold War; I remember the bomb shelters and Russia. The Cold War was so much more; it was an idea, an image and a propaganda war, a war of the heart and mind. Russia did not allow freedom of expression in any form thus its art, Socialist Realism, was stylized, rigid, and confined. The CIA saw Abstract Expressionism as the ideal opportunity to show the world our wealth of creativity, intellectual freedom, and cultural power; our superiority over Russia. Because most Americans did not like non-realistic art, the CIA’s project was Top Secret. Millionaires like Nelson Rockefeller (MOMA), William Paley (CBS & CIA), and Julius Fleischmann served as conduits for the CIA’s money; serving as the head of foundations set up by the CIA to promote US culture.

While the CIA’s promotion certainly didn’t hurt, critics strongly feel that Abstract Expressionism would have flourished on its own. Her paintings are not bound by material choice, however, as the artist continues to push her visual vocabulary with richly modeled surface textures in delightful contrast to sprawling arrays of drips and lyrical lines.

Matt McConnell is a sculptor and designer, born and raised in Charlotte, NC. He moved to Raleigh in 1990 to attend the NC State College of Design, graduating with degrees in Architecture and Industrial Design.

In the words of the artist: “The forms and marks are natural and seemingly familiar, yet they are nonspecific, not easy to label. I intend for them to be fluid, without fixed meanings. Within an environment of deep light and color, my goal is to create an experience that is pre-verbal, promoting pictorial awareness prior to any explicit formatting of perceptual experiences into narratives. I like to think of my paintings as visual poems.” Rochat’s work can be found in collections world-wide, including: Alston & Bird, Atlanta; the Dubai Consulate; Pacific Peninsula Group, San Francisco, CA; Saks Fifth Avenue, Miami, FL.

Fascinated with geometry and natural forms since childhood, the expression of these elements remains a consistent focus of his work. He works to capture and express the energy of time, motion, growth, and invisible forces such as wind and gravity. Exploration of this vision often includes transformation and repetition where the rhythm and flow intertwine to create three dimensional elements, often inspired by helix, wave, plant, and animal forms. This passion for form and layering, combined with a drive for exploring new materials and fabrication systems, has produced a diverse portfolio of projects created for both public and private spaces in a wide variety of materials, including metals, glass, fabric, plastics, wood, and concrete.
